I get takeaway here almost every Tuesday due to work commitments, but they still ask every week if I'm eating in so I guess that speaks to the level of service. However, this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Melbourne, food wise, showcasing everything from home made Mongolian fare to Cantonese soups.
Anyone who has read my reviews will know I have tough criteria for good food, and this place has never disappointed. That being said, their best is in the foods most people and IGers don't order.
This is the place for those who appreciate the cultures where their food comes from, a whole lot of heart and a whole lot of flavour like the first few seasons of Masterchef before it got old. Try the road not trodden on this menu and you'll be rewarded
This is in top 10 Chinese restaurants in Glen Waverley. Ordered some of the chef specials. The mixed glass noodles with grated vegetables and sesame sauce was the best dish.
It’s nice place to have Dongbei Chinese meal there. Staff was very friendly and the meals were great. We’ll back again for my parents’ birthday dinner next month.
Food was nice. But expensive. Pork belly tower was so interesting but so rich! Best to share with many others. The lamb ribs were yum and the sesame rainbow salad as entree was the favourite!

Such an awesome place tucked away by the station, I'm surprised I haven't been here before! It's got an awesome interior both down stairs and upstairs, with the upper level having a private dining room tucked away in the back.
I had a range of dishes and can confidently say that all the dishes are SO delicious with such amazing asian flavours! I absolutely loved the Pork Belly tour, Salted egg yolk prawns and Dry braised crystal-fish! All 3 a must in my opinion, 100% I will be back! When I went I saw some tables with a giant stove / pot installed on it, where customers were cooking a noodle soup type dish? I don't think it was Hotpot but whatever it was I have to go back and try!!
Master Chef in Glen Waverley serves a few different dishes beyond your stock standard Chinese restaurant.
One of their signature dishes is the pork belly tower - almost every table ordered this item. And with good reason! It not only looked unique but it tasted beautiful. The sweet and sour fish was perfectly fried and drenched with a tasty sauce.
There were limited dessert options. The osmanthus glutinous rice balls tasted medicinal but it was a nice end to the meal.
Located near the train station in Glen Waverley, this restaurant certainly exudes an aura of class. The restaurant has two levels with different types of table settings including hotpot. My group went upstairs and we ordered a variety of delicious dishes including pork belly tower, scallops, smoked chicken, prawns and dumplings. We had a delightful time, served by professional staff. Highly recommended.
Another Asian restaurant just recently opened in Glen Waverley and definitely here to provide amazing Chinese foods. We were invited to the Chinese feast to sample their signature dishes. Located very close to Glen Waverley train station, right in front of the bus stops, too easy to get into this place.

Right near Glen Waverley train station, it's in such a central location and easy to get to! The restaurant has such a beautiful interior, with a lot of Chinese inspired art. You have the choice to sit at a table with a hot pot built into it. Or, if you're one of the lucky ones (like me), you'll be able to sit in the fancy private room. This room felt so grand and I honestly felt a bit like royalty with the massive round table, black walls and the abundance of decorations.
I was so lucky I got to try so many dishes here! However the stand out dishes for me were:
The pork belly tower, which was a massive stack of juicy pork belly. The sauce complimented the pork belly so well.
The salted egg corn, which had a crisp, salty exterior and sweet corn on the inside.
Both the ‘dry’ and ‘hot pot’ style noodles were so tasty. Both noodles had amazing accompanying sauces & condiments. I reckon the hot pot noodles would be perfect for winter.
The desserts, which are amazing! I’m not usually a fan of Chinese desserts, but I loved both of these. The mantou buns with condensed milk had a lovely, sweet, slightly crispy exterior & a soft bun on the inside. Dipping it in the condensed milk added the perfect level of sweetness. The little buns were incredible (without sauce). They had the most crispy texture on the outside and a gooey, sweet interior. Still dreaming about both of these desserts.
The service was so friendly & welcoming. The meal came out so quickly & piping hot which was awesome!
Away from the main strip in Glen Waverley, this hidden gem absolutely delivered the goods. The highlight of the night was definitely the pork belly tower. Loved their fish and mantou also. Would definitely recommend this place!
Masterchef is a Chinese restaurant located in Glen Waverley and is a hidden gem. We were seated in a private family room that could seat about ten people around a very spacious round table with a revolving centre. The menu is very extensive but the quality of food is indeed delicious. Special mentions would be the salted egg yolk prawns, pork belly tower, deep fried fish with sweet and sour sauce and pumpkin cakes! The food was absolutely tasty and the service was efficient. This restaurant is highly recommended to all Chinese food lovers.
Had a massive feast here the other night. The restaurant is opposite Glen Waverley train station and is two levels.
Starting with the main event the pork belly tower is a pyramid of pork belly deliciousness that melted in your mouth🤤. Other highlight dishes were the salted egg yolk prawns and corn and the sweet and sour fish 👌. Unfortunately lighting wasn't the best so I didnt get many pics.
Service was fast and the owner/manager was extremely humble and friendly.
What an absolute feast I had at Masterchef. I really thoroughly enjoyed everything but there were definitely a few stand outs for me. 🙌🏼My top 3 dishes below!
1. Deep fried fish with sweet and sour sauce: My favourite dish of the night. Fish cooked to perfection in a delicious 'keep-going-back-for-more' sauce. 😍
2. Salted Egg Yolk Prawns: Such great umami flavours on perfectly cooked prawns. 🍤
3. Pork Belly Tower: This is the first time I have ever seen such a dish! It delivered both in eye appeal and flavour. Loved it. 🤩
A special mention to the tofu also - they hand make it! #appreciate. ✊🏼

We had visited Master Chef Chinese Restaurant for dinner and it was a pretty stunning experience!
All the dishes served were pretty yummy and there were a few that stood out!
Pork belly tower - this was pretty much strips of pork belly combined into a pyramid like tower as can been seen from the photo! The pork belly was so tender and juicy and melted into your mouth! The sauce around the pork belly gave it extra flavoring!
Salted egg prawns - these prawns were coated really well and you could taste the salted egg which was dominant! Moreover, the prawns were super fresh and juicy!
Fried fish with sweet chili sauce - this was pretty tasty and fried to perfection! The fish meat was also fresh and went well with the sweet chili sauce!
Red bean in egg white - this was my fave dessert not only for its creativity but for also its taste as well! Who would have thought egg white could be used as a bun?! The bun was soft and fluffy and the filling was sweet just the way I like it!
Overall I had a great experience at Master Chef Chinese Restaurant and I would go again for the rest of their dishes!

Glen Waverley has a continual evolution in its culinary scene, the high rent the restaurants face they really have to be at the top of their game otherwise they are cycled out. Master Chef specialises in Dongbei cuisine as well as serving other regional cuisines, the "sneak peek" details on Zomato explain it best. We came here to celebrate Mother's day and were lead upstairs where there were large family styled tables fitted out with a Lazy Susan. They took beverage orders, we got some Jasmine tea which was frequently topped up and served at the table, some of the better service we got that night.
Their menu is extensive, I am a bit hesitant with large menus as it just means more room for error (the execution was immaculate as we soon discovered). All the dishes we ordered were designed for sharing. We got their kung pao chicken, a bit pedestrian but it's one of the few dishes the youngins can palate. It was fragrant with pieces of chicken and peanuts, the sauce clung onto the ingredients and was not watery.
We also got their lamb ribs which were coated in spices and cumin, the little garnishes made it quite herbaceous. Their prawns with salted egg yolk was stellar, the prawns retained its bouncy consistency and had a lovely crumbly coating of salted egg yolk. One of the best dishes I've sampled that highlights the salted egg yolk flavour profile.
We also got their braised sea cucumber with pork knuckle. They pride themselves in free-ranged pork and it was beautifully soft, the sea cucumber was on the firm and springy side. We are used to sea cucumber being more squishy but mum says it's meant to be of that texture, I can appreciate that. The sauce it was in was quite addictive with large slices of garlic. Their slow cooked duck in "brown sauce" was equally magical, it was so tender it was falling apart.
The pork belly tower was an impressive construction of pork belly strips smothered again in this mysterious "brown sauce". Although quite fatty, I didn't find it heavy at all and the fat just disappears in your mouth. It's great in small portions. It was the dish that was least touched as everyone was conscious of their health, I was even considering getting the rest in a doggy bag but I was met with contempt. Seriously, I could do with some extra weight.
The finale was the deep-fried barramundi in sweet and sour sauce, you pay a little more premium for the live fish (which we got). Surprisingly it was the star of the night, it still retained its delicate texture after being fried and the fish skin was amazingly crispy. The sauce was sweet and tangy and was meticulously prepared with all the bones taken out which made for convenient dining.
A minor criticism would have to be service, we had to wait for our steamed rice to arrive before we did any real digging in (after our 3rd or 4th dish). Other than that it picked up throughout the night and there was a steady flow of dishes. It's a good break from the Chinese dining options we usually opt for and had it's own personal flare, their iron-pot stews (not yet tried, a Dongbei specialty) makes for a unique dining experience. One of the strongest Chinese dining options out there in Melbourne.
Great service from start to end. Novel experience eating from a massive hotpot, amplified by tasty food. Would definitely recommend this place.
Am so elated to have found this gem of a restaurant in the glen waverley suburb! 😯 This unassuming establishment really does deserve all the praise! Wow most dishes looked very ordinary, every dish was cooked so well! 😍The flavours was extremely well balanced, nothing was too salty or too sweet, it was just the right amount of every flavour! 👍🏻Price wise, I would say the dishes on average are high 20s to $30ish dollar a dish. Some dishes can go up to 90ish if you are getting seafood! 🦞🦀If you are here, definitely order the pork belly tower, salted egg prawns and the braised pork vermicelli! 🤤 They also serve complimentary fruits after the meal which is always a plus!🍉 Only downside is the restaurant is very busy and packed with customers so the food does take a while to come 😥 A good venue for family dinners! Will definitey be back! ☺️
I saw lots of friend posted their pork tower on Instagram. Came here to try their pork tower. The setting was very pleased. Service was great as well. All of the food we ordered was very good. None of them disappoint me.

Master Chef is a local Glen Waverley favourite tucked away on quiet side of the station (near Dan Murphy’s). Their menu is an epic 37 pages long and it is packed full of things that look familiar but have a bit of a twist - that’s because they specialise in cuisine from the Dongbei province in far North China, something I hadn’t tried prior to this visit!
Firstly, I can honestly say that every single dish was super flavoursome and high quality. I will definitely be bringing my parents here when they visit Melb!
We were treated to a feast that included:
* Spare ribs with sweet and sour sauce
* Homemade signature Tofu
* Whole fried fish with sweet chilli sauce
* Salted egg prawns
* Clap cucumbers
* Fried Rice
* Stewed chicken with hazel mushroom
* Braised sliced pork belly with brown sauce
* Cumin lamb
* Steamed eggplant with garlic sauce
* Red bean in egg
* Pumpkin cake with red bean
The standout dish for me were the salted egg prawns — if you like salted egg at all (think the Din Tai Fung lava buns) then this is a MUST TRY, it will seriously change your life!!! I’m literally craving some right now.
The braised pork belly is so soft and tender, and amazingly presented as a king of pork pyramid/tower. Total crowd pleaser!!
Although far less flashy, I also loved the stewed chicken which was served in a kind of portable hot pot stand. There are also massive pots built into some of the tables if one of the soups is what you’re after.
The cumin lamb, steamed eggplant, handmade tofu and fresh cucumbers were also standouts that I would definitely order again. In fact the only dish I didn’t love was the red bean in egg white - just not for me.
In sum, if you’re after an authentic Chinese feast that’s a bit unique and high quality without breaking the bank, definitely give Master Chef a try!

Can’t believe it has taken me so long to discover Master Chef which isn’t too far from where I live! It’s honestly such a great spot to get your Chinese food fix and is somewhere that you would bring your family to.
All the food was amazing, but some of my faves were the whole fish with fried chilli, salted egg prawns and braised sliced pork belly. You MUST order these dishes.
I highly recommend that you try their desserts too! Their take on the usual desserts with a red bean filling were just too good to stop eating!
My new favourite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. I was surprised at the fact that there was even a Chinese restaurant right opposite the Glen Waverley train station. But now after I’ve eaten there, I will definitely be coming back. The food were authentic, flavourful and well presented, nothing too salty or spicy, just right.
We had the Braised slice pork belly with brown sauce (which was my ultimate favourite), Whole fried fish with sweet chilli sauce (that sauce were yum), Salted egg prawns, Cumin lamb and 2 desserts which were Pumpkin pie and Red bean in egg wrapped. I love love love the Pumpkin pie, the crusty and chewy pumpkin batter with the sweet red bean filling was great!
Overall, food and service was good and booking is recommended as it gets quite packed at dinner time.

It is always nice to have a few go-to restaurants that you can rely on. The ones that at any time you feel like having a comfort food type of dining out, you don’t have to scratch your head trying to find one that is good. This restaurant has definitely made it to be one of my top list for that. My newest chinese go-to restaurant! All the dishes We tried here are of good standards. Well cooked, well balanced flavours (and I am generally very picky with this) and some dishes even have outstanding presentation. I’m really impressed.
The dishes we tried:
Spare ribs with sweet and sour sauce - nice tangy flavour without being overly done.
Homemade Tofu (with shrimps) - nice soft tofu with gentle flavours
Whole fried fish with sweet chilli sauce - nicely fried whole fish with light batter. Sweet and sour with very very subtle chilli presence.
Salted egg prawn - Golden fried, well coated with salted egg crumbs. Delicious.
Fried Rice - well executed humble dish.
Stew chicken with hazel mushroom - tasty broth and chicken pieces. Glass noodles was a good match for this dish. Be cautious with the bones though.
Braised sliced pork belly with brown sauce - Presentation is on point. Pyramid constructed dish. Tasty and tender slices of pork belly. Yumm.
Cumin lamb - slices of tender lamb pieces packed with flavours. If you love spicy food in Sichuan style, you will love it. I do.
Steamed eggplant with garlic sauce - seemingly underrated dish. Moist and soft eggplant slices packed with caramelised garlic flavour. Delicious.
The place was busy when we visited here. The space downstairs seems a bit limited, but there are more seatings upstairs.
Overall a great dining experience, will definitely go back here again. A truly hidden gem in a less crowded side of Glen Waverley eatery spot.
I was super eggcited to try the “Salted Egg Yolk Prawns” here and it was seriously amazing! The highlight of the night but everything else we had were delicious! the fish was on point, cumin lamb and soup were amazing too. Definitely a hidden gem in Glen Waverley Southeast Suburbs, so if you’re in the area - hit this place up!

Omg what a hidden surprise!!! This place was completely packed when I was there and I can see why with the quality of dishes served. Every dish was packed full of flavour and tasted so authentic. Some must orders were the braised pork belly tower and the salted egg crusted prawns!! I will definitely be back with the rest of the family next time. They would love it here 🙌

Stand out fave (in my opinion) from the night were those amazing Salted Egg Prawns. Fried to absolute perfection - crispy pops of salted egg goodness, so very morish!
The Braised Sliced Pork Belly was the one of the best presented dishes of the night! Formed into a pyramid, it was fun and amazingly flavourful and yum!
The Spare Ribs and the Whole Fried Fish has amazing sauce and were both tender and juicy. Cumin Lamb was spicy and delicious and the Garlic Eggplant and Homemade Tofu were out of this world!
The Stew Chicken with Hazel Mushroom went really well with the Fried Rice with its yummy broth.
All dishes were presented really nicely, staff were friendly and it was a really enjoyable night!!

We visited Masterchef which is situated in the less busier side of Glen Waverley- right next to the station
The meal we had was absolutely spectacular , we started our meal with fresh watermelon juice and sliced pork in garlic soy dip. The pork was very strong and was perfect with the garlic dip
For mains we ordered the salted egg prawns, home made tofu, stew or pork belly and vegetables, slow cooked duck in soy and some fried rice
The salted egg prawns was a favourite amongst the table, the perfect salted egg mixture and juicy tender prawns inside. Loved how crunchy and delicious this dish was -executed perfectly and seriously addictive
The home made tofu was also a unique dish that I loved, the tofu was very soft and reminded me of steam egg, loved the gravy covering the tofu and the bok choy which provided freshness
The slow cooked duck was something very familiar, the duck was tender and the soy flavour had been cooked into the duck - very nicely done and can totally see my whole family loving this dish
The stew of pork belly and vegetables was also a favourite among the table, we loved how garlicy the stew was, the sweet potato noodles was a nice touch and the soup was extremely concentrated - a very simple looking dish but this one will punch you with flavour
All in all, we loved our dining experience here, food was really delicious and traditional. Service was also extremely attentive - some language barriers but they try really hard to accomodate your needs

Interesting place that I never ever eat in Melbourne! Traditional Chinese food for east part of China, mixed few Sichuan dishes. I love the pancake and gulbaorou. You guys have to try.
One of the most amazing Chinese Restaurant in this area! The price is worth it! So many varieties of dishes that you can choose from. Lots of beverages that you can choose from whether it would be hot or cold. I absolutely like the food. the taste was so good. Must try it! Hope to get here back soonest!
We came here 2 weeks ago, love this place so much. We ordered fish barbecue which is very good spice yummy dish one and boiled shredded pork tripe with chili, spice and fantastic. Definitely will come again

Last time I passed this restaurant when I when I went to Alibaba KTV with my friends, I found that they got a beautiful decorated. Few days later we came here and we both think the food in this restaurant is really great, and they got some special hand draws on the plate of the cold dish. It’s really pity that I didn’t take it down. Most important thing is, I found a amazing VIP room on the second floor (I sneaked around for a while). BTW it’s a really nice place to meet up with friends.

The dishes are delicious and taste like hometown. The restaurant is also very clean and tidy. The waiter and the boss are very enthusiastic. I often go to this restaurant and it is recommended.
I don’t know how this place got a 4.9 in total score, but I would have to say it’s pretty good in food, higher quality food comparing to other traditional Chinese restaurants, however not surprisingly good. A place for casual dinners, yet considering the price is still higher than the other similar restaurants, I won’t say it’s cost performance is on track.
On another thought, I still wanna contest the 4.9 score, as it’s not a normal score you can find in Zomato, specially when you have a lot reviews. I believe the restaurant is hiring users to give the 5 stars rating. However, don’t get me wrong, I quite like this restaurant as it’s a good place for dinner.

Friends have suggested this place so we have tried it out during lunch and it’s pretty impressive that I went for dinner again on the same night. The dishes are mostly North East Chinese cuisine but also included some Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisines. Pretty authentic flavours and not too oily.
A bit of every cuisine from different areas of China! Surprisingly every cuisine tastes pretty good! Especially the 3.5KG lobster so fresh and delicious! Price is very reasonable and service is also fantastic! They have the VIP room upstairs which is great for big gathering! Definitely will come back again!
I don't usually have Chinese Northeast food, fortunately this restaurant also has some Sichuan and Guangzhou dishes to choose, that's good. Pan fried dumplings are beautiful!!! And my friends likes squirrel shaped fish very much~
Nice restaurant! The lunch dishes are cheap. It's hard to find 8.8 dollar-dish in Mel now. I think this could be a good choice for students. Dinner dishes are not expensive, everyday' s specials with rice should be enough and the price would be less than 20~~~

The best Dongbei (my hometown)cuisine in Melbourne! I have been there many times, all the dishes are delicious! And the service is good too.

Pork ear is a bit hard, wasabi duck feet is bone off and it comes with honey mustard sauce not wasabi, chicken mushroom in soup is really tasty even tho they use boiling chicken which cost $4 for a whole chicken, beef tendon is super tender, comes with leek not spring onion as the menu indicates. They charge cockage at $10 per bottle as I remember. For the bright sides I do like their tablewares a lot, they are not cheap and rough as many other Chinese restaurant. And some of these dishes remind me of what they really taste like in China, which is a compliment. They offer about 20 choices of $8.8 lunch deal with big portion of food and not bad taste, which is a bargain. Will go back for lunch again I guess.
It's a very nice Chinese restaurant and has nice environment. The service is very warm. The food is very good and delicious. In addition, the price is beautiful. It's a wisdom choice to choose this restaurant if someone like Chinese food.
Very nice and authentic ! Good portions & very nice staff ! Will be coming again and again . Shredded beef & fried rice were yum !

Ordered dumplings and spicy soft shell crab takeaway. The dumpling skin was a bit too thick, but otherwise was fine. Liked the soft shell crab- it was good we ordered rice as well as the crunchy bits from that dish could be mixed with the rice. Service was fine too, way above other Asian eateries in that area.
Update: bumped up rating because staff was considerate when I purchased takeaway of a fried dish and cut a corner off the takeaway box lid so that it wouldn't be steamed soggy during the commute home. Very thoughtful. If you want authentic non-fusion asian food in a nice environment, this is a great place
