Review Sabai Cafe - Glenelg

This place is a gem. The wait staff totally got us. We started with a beer ($5) and spring rolls browsing the menu. All dishes are nutritious and yummie. We chose the stir fry prawns with greens to share. Seriously, amazingly good. We then had another browse and ordered the pad thai. It’s was up there with the first dish. After sharing those two servings we were full but extremely high and happy. Definitely a place to visit in Glenelg. It’s just a 5 minutes walk from Jetty Road. After dinner it’s worth the romantic finish by walking along the beach side. XO

I called to book a dinner late on a Thursday for Friday night, and Sabai were very accomodating in fitting us in early as it was going to be very busy. We had a nice table in their beautiful back area. The staff were lovely and accessible. Highly recommend the food as it was delicious and a good portion when ordering an entree and main. We also had three vegans in the group and there was plenty of options which were all thoroughly enjoyed. We also liked the byo drinks option. Will definitely be returning soon for dine in or takeaway! Thank you Sabai!

I came to Sabai cafe for the reviews, and I don't regret. Everything was full of flavour. Beef massanan was tender and delicious and the red duck curry was very tasty.

New review July 2020: we finally came back here for dinner after such a long time, and we were certainly not disappointed! The food was really amazing 😍😍. . For entrees, we got some vegetarian curry puffs, crispy chicken wings, and fish cakes - all were super yummy, and we devoured everything immediately. . For the mains, our favourite dish must have been the tamarind prawns - it was so tasty! Lovely tamarind sauce with tender prawns; perfect combination. The Pad Thai with chicken was nicely done. The pork belly was amazing. And the Choo Chee tofu was really good too! Couldn't really fault anything. Highly recommended!

Exceptionally delicious food! I highly recommend the tom kah gai soup & panang meatballs - absolutely delicious. The staff are friendly, accommodating and service is excellent! I would recommend making a reservation though, as the restaurant was very busy when we attended (and we almost missed out - haha)!! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience!

This place serves great food, we had the tom kha gai, spring rolls, penang meat balls and seafood salad all of which were incredible. I highly recommend making a booking as the place can get busy. I highly suggest this cafe if you want to dine in a place with great ambiance. Will definitely come back.

I have eaten at Sabai more times than I can remember over the last 6 years. Absolutely love this place, amazing food, wonderful service, very reasonable prices. One of my favourite causal restaurants, I will keep going back many many times. Thank you!

My favourite breakfast place ever. Great vego options including the best menu item, the vego khow pad. Hungry just thinking about this place. ☕

A wonderful little local restaurant at night, cafe during the day. Thai food cooked from the heart.

Wasn't authentic Thai food. Service was good. Was very loud and a extremely small restaurant. I ordered pad Thai which is my fave and it came out with vermicelli noodles which definitely not Thai. I've been to Thailand many a time therefore am aware what is authentic. If looking for authentic Thai food and be able to hear your partner talk then don't go here. Sorry not for me
Quince
Only pro about the place is that the staff were quite accommodating and allowed us an early seat having no reservation beforehand. But the food was honestly so so expensive for such small quantity. Dinner was mediocre at best and definitely will not be returning or recommending to friends.

I am very much particular with time. This is my first time to come and dine on this place and been served on time for entree but have to wait long for the mains. Cost is quite high for food served nothing but ordinary. Overall, its a good night of meal experience.

I came here for dinner by myself and ordered an entree and main. I had crispy chicken wing and red curry duck. To be honest both food weren't great like other thai cuisine or maybe I expected too much as the review on zomato above four which is great. But again sometimes we can't trust others review and take a chance to have a try a restaurant with an average review. The taste of the food are not even better than a food court. I might be over judged but that's what I felt. The red duck curry just far from my expectation, lack of taste. Sorry..
Maggie
Absolutely disgusting "Thai" food. Choo chee tasted like a curry paste with no coconut cream - just paste over soggy battered chicken. It was actually inedible. Would never recommend or ever go back.

Great coffee and very delicious Sabai breakfast; they have recently updated it. Also enjoyed the vegetarian gnocchi dish, although their interpretation of gnocchi is quite broad. Pity the Thai lunch is only available Wed-Sun.

Great breakfast! Nice staff, consistently good food... Highly recommended. Great breakfast! Nice staff, consistently good food... Highly recommended.

Ordered the Sabai breakfast, which was perfect! It came with some beautiful homemade baked beans, tomato relish, mushrooms, bacon, poached eggs and amazing hash browns. Service was friendly, and warm. Would recommend this spot for good food 👍🏻👍🏻

i was expecting a lot better, i came for Thai food it was just ok

Best breakfast place in Adelaide with awesome vego options. Great food and coffee 100% worth the mid range price. Have to get my favourite vego khow pad every time.

Amazing thai food! It is quite spicy so be prepared ;) the spring rolls are very large and delicious! A lot of the desserts at this café are raw and healthy.

We used to live on Weewanda Street, so given my passion for Thai food, you'd think this would have become my local. Unfortunately not. The service is great, but the food I tried here was nothing special. I haven't tried every single dish, so perhaps I've missed something. Anyway, the food doesn't make my mouth water thinking about it, even though I'm feeling peckish right now. Sabai has a nice atmosphere, but it's really noisy. I'm not a fan of noisy restaurants after a long, hard day at work. I don't think I'll be returning, just because I've had better Thai elsewhere, at a better price and in a quieter setting.

Grabbed some take away tonight from Sabai Cafe after having had it bookmarked for ages. I had a chicken stir fry with garlic, bok choi, carrot and rice. Definite feel good food. Boyfriend had the beef massaman curry. Lovely tender meat. A little salty but offset by the beautiful fresh red capsicum and the inclusion of the potato.

We went in to grab our order and the food other people were eating looked amazing. Someone eating a curry and another plate with crispy looking salt and pepper squid. Can't wait to come back to try a few more things and really explore the menu.

Food:
Great choice of different and interesting dishes with fantastic staples to please the more timid diner. Flavours that will keep you wanting more!

Staff:
Friendly and relaxed atmosphere, also great for takeaway.

Best Thai in Glenelg never an empty seat!
Laura
Delicious Indonesian menu alongside freshly made pastries and other bakery goods. Sounds like a strange mix but both are done wonderfully! Awesome basic goreng.

Sabai is my go to for great, wholesome Thai food. Curries were fragrant and stir fry great. Fresh fit out and good service. Also good as a mid-week stop.

Excellent genuine customer service every time I go here! The staff are down to earth and happy to have a quick chat snot anything. They all seem like very nice people which makes it very easy to want to come back. Plus the coffee is very good :)

Lunch. The food was fresh and clean tasting. Pleasant light environment. No offer of wine list. When requested was left with us - but no follow up service. I was after a bottle of pino Gris. Made it a cheap meal but I feel for the owner!

Disappointed. We love this place and for a fact it was there I took my partner for a nice dinner on our one of our first date and the other day on a Monday which is my day off and all they have for lunch was a very limited menu which didn't appeal to us we were not in search for ozzie food
We end up not staying after we saw what's on offer
Sorry but stick to your guns guys
Very disappointed

Wow...unbelievable food and service...so quick and so good will defiantly be going back and would highly recommend.

Brunch Time. This place is my favourite place for breakfast and they serve brekky til 3pm. I always have a hard time choosing between the Sourdough with goats curd and mushrooms and the smoked trout, pea and coriander fritters with avocado. Both are great with an added poached egg and hash browns. The Tom Yum Omelette is really good too, nice and light with a tasty thai twist. They have around 10-15 good choices and all of the extras you could want, the only hard thing is fitting them all on your plate.
Linda
Book it in! Amazing food, had the satay and curry puff for entree, so much flavour! massman curry was full of coconut flavour and the beefjust melts in your mouth.
Amy
Delicious meal (fish cakes, meatball curry and especially the choo chee prawns - amazing). Service was very friendly and prompt. A great dinner - highly recommended. (Cafe during the day is good too)

Had such a yummy lunch here today. I had the basil chicken but everyone said their meals were as delicious as mine was! Will definitely be coming back soon. (Great desserts and coffee also!)

10/10

Hands down the best Pad Thai I have tasted since coming back from 6 weeks in South East Asia.....

Great friendly staff, small intimate cafe with a great atmosphere. The food is amazing, love the Cho Chi pawns!!

Just found our new family favourite within walking distance! Had a deliciousness red duck curry, kids enjoyed their various bits! Great wine n beer selections!! We will be back... Possibly every Friday night!!!!

We again had a beautiful evening at Sabai last night. Fresh made spring rolls were crisp with a great blend of texture and flavours. On to the mains and the pad Thai was creative honest and authentic. The green chicken curry was delicate with deep rich aftertaste and our prawn dish had all the flavours that one looks for in a flame grilled and marinated seafood dish with the right combination of sweet flavours and delicious smoky overtones.. 10/10 and all delivered with friendly smiles and a sence of being in a village community restaurant..

Had lunch there today whilst on holiday from Melbourne. Very nice. Atmosphere was good, very clean and friendly staff. Started with an ice cold singha beer which they served with an ice cold glass. Had the curry puffs, green curry and phad Thai. All were very flavoursome with fresh authentic Thai taste. Presentation was also immaculate on very clean plates. Highly recommend it.
Michelle
Average breakfast. Came here for breakfast and it was very average. Have yet to try their lunch/dinner menu.
Georgia Edgar
Amazing. Delicious green apple chicken entree and green curry! Gorgeous atmosphere.
Eating In Adelaide
Good food & friendly staff. I've been to Sabai a few times for brunch/ lunch recently. Sabai has an extensive menu which is reasonably priced. The thai food is great and really reasonably priced. Staff are always friendly. Nice sunny place to have a coffee and do some work/ homework- really recommend! One critcism- bring back the basil beef!
Rachel
Great coffee!!! Breakfast is fantastically delicious, same with Thai dinner.

Hidden Gem. Had a lovely dinner at Sabai on Wednesday night, the food was delicious and the staff were great. Really nice experience all round. Will definitely be back.
MishT
Went there today for breakfast hoping there would be some Thai elements in the food but was disappointed. Menu didn't look exciting at all and food was average. Coffee, on the other hand, was pretty good.
Tamara
Nice food, but very small portions and very expensive. Just bought take away chilli chicken was only half full in the container & the green curry had 6 small pieces of chicken. Ordered a few sides and it came to $60, doubt we'll be back.
Anna
The best Thai café in Adelaide basil chicken is to die for so yummy the staff are fantastic and very friendly.
MashinOz
Really enjoyed the veggie breakfast and the full breakfast for our first visit here, the baked beans are amazing. We will definitely be back to try more things on the menu.
Jeanne
The coffee is amazing! The food is also very good too! But I love going to sabai most for the coffee.
Lyndelle Barry
I went here after reading the reviews. Had the vego pad Thai. It wasn't bad, but compared with other places in Adelaide, it just didn't shine. I won't be going back.

Consistently great!. I highly recommend!! Great food, friendly staff and great coffee! Haven't had dinner here but breakfast and lunch are always great! Always hear great things about dinner as well! you won't be let down!
Tony
Good Thai food cooked by actual Thai cooks I believe (the service was not Thai but that doesn't matter). Need to book ahead. I liked the Barramundi Choo Chee a lot and recommend this wholeheartedly. I could only fault the size of the servings which I thought could be a little larger.
Tinas
After dining in for breakfast quite a few times we'd been meaning to try dinner for a while, well it certainly didn't disappoint! Chicken satay and Thai curry puffs for entree were a perfect start, although the curry puffs could've done with a bit more curry flavour. Then onto the roasted duck curry from the specials menu and a Penang curry beef for mains, superb! Service was efficient and friendly and the place was packed, make sure you book!

Stuffed chicken wings as entre = amazing! (wish this place was back home in Melbourne )

Delicious! Went for a friends birthday and Great selections on the menu! had basil chicken and chicken and vege rice, can't wait to try some of the other dishes. All made fresh so the dishes can be altered. Cute interior.

New fave. After years of frequenting the Jetty Rd standards and getting bored with their offerings we tried Sabai, just take away initially. From the fact the food was ready when they said it would be, to the tasty offerings that we opened at home, I can't wait to dine in. My daughter even commented that it was the most enjoyable Thai since the Blue Elephant in Phuket Town. excellent beef salads, flavoursome choo chee sauce, crisp prawns, and pad Thai that did not turn into a solid lump in the take away container. My only question. Why had I taken so long to find this little gem.
Soulman
Nice Thai. Went with the family for my wife's birthday. This is a cafe not an intimate restaurant. Very noisy & small. Staff were pleasant & attentive. Meals consistently good. I had the Barra which was excellent but the birthday girl found the meat tough in her steak dish. Choo chee chicken was highly rated by those who had it. In general good quality all round.

Choo Chee Wow!!!. We had dinner at Sabai last night and were very impressed. The service, food and decor are fantastic. From the second we sat down we knew we were in the right place for a great meal. The waft of all the thai spices that filled the cafe was a true delight. Best Choo Chee Prawns ever! Cant wait to go back for breakfast...and lunch...and definately dinner again. Thanks for a wonderful experience:)
Noelene
Loves it!. Maybe one of the most honest, Thai restuarants in the state? Thai owners & chefs = THAI FOOD!

Loved It. We were welcomed in warmly by a man i presume is the owner, and were seated at one of the only unreserved tables in the cafe. I think it's best to book to make sure you can get in, as the cafe is not very big. The staff were all lovely, very personable and recommended a rose to go with our meal. We ordered the Fish Cakes and Curry Puffs for Entree - both were delicious. The curry puffs were lightly fried and very tasty. Fish cakes came with a traditional Thai dipping sauce of Chilli, cucumber and shallot. Entrees are between $6.90 and $12.50

Mains were a highlight though, Penang Curry Meatballs on a menu was something i have been wanting to see for a long time. The pork balls were light and delicious, in a mild red curry sauce. The other dish we ordered was the Green chicken curry. This was one of the best green curries i have had in a long time, the right amount of heat from the chilli, and the eggplant was beautiful in the dish. Mains range from around $15 - $20

Relaxed!. We didnt want to cook, so we wandered down to our local cafe for diner, well, what a surprise!! the best Thai food on our doorstep & we didnt even know it! This place is really modest & laid back, but the food speaks for its- self. We were so impressed that we didnt want to write a review, so we could keep this place a secret, but the owners deserve some recognition!! Thumbs up!!

Hidden Gem!!. I Love this place! It's not flashy, nor does it display much of a Thai influence, but the food is great!! & the place has atmosphere. A great little spot that i'm sure the locals want to keep a secret!

Dinner here was delightful! The food was really tasty and fresh and the staff were very welcoming. Best curry puffs ever, really different! BYO is a bonus too!

One of the more popular cafes in the Glenelg South area is Sabai, which seems to be full everytime I drive past. The menu is a combination of Thai fusion, vegetarian and vegan.

The lamb shank pie was amazing! The addition of coriander seed on top added another dimension in terms of aroma to the pie. The lamb shank was cooked perfectly and shredded to be added together with chickpea and mashed pumpkin as the pie filling. The pastry was made so good and flaky that I cannot resist to pick up the residual fallen pieces of pastry on the plate.
The Hungry Excavator
I really liked their take on it by using lots of fresh barra slices (with skin on), instead of one big fillet. Higher surface area of crunch and more enjoyable to eat. Also, the potatoes were AMAZING.

Mains range from around $15 – $20
