Review The Crane Japanese Restaurant - Glenelg

Tess Clark
Second visit. The train has shut down at moment so you order what you want. Quality of food and presentation is lovely. Quiet at lunch when we've been but imagine in summer that would change. Can book which is great. Love it.

Stuff is very polite. Always wear smile make me very comfortable. But their voices is not loud, probably they are a little bit shy haha. The environment is Japanese style, quiet and with Japanese music. I order sushi. The presentation is amazing.

They have a big place to fit lots of customers but they don't have enough staff so service was quite slow. The price of food isn't cheap but the piece of fish sitting on the nigiri sushi is disappointingly small. We ordered the $10 for 6 pieces of takoyaki other than the around $3 for 3 pieces according to what the staff told us 'bigger pieces' but we didn't see they were big at all. Quite a disappointing experience

I've just arrived with my boyfriend in adelaide from Sydney and we had a dinner at the crane. Just one word: AMAZING! Staff was lovely, really quick service, good price and lots of variety sushi and sashimi. Highly recommend!

The restaurant has the one of the best sushis we've ever eaten. Japanese sake was great as well. Strongly recommended to everyone who enjoys great food in a lovely authentic restaurant like this.

Waited almost one hour for our food. No apologies made. No discount for the long wait given. Food average. There are lots of good Japanese restaurants. This is not one of them. Go elsewhere.

Beautifuuly cooked fresh meal! Duck was delicious and bugs were even better! Feel so sorry for Jetty Road businesses ATM with all the roadworks - go try The Crane!
Ken Lokky
It is not authentic, sloppy and dishonest. i wish there is a negative star. We ordered wagyu but it might be just a regular beef that charges us $43

Loved it so much!! A complete hidden gem! We walked in to book a table for 8pm at 5pm since we’re staying at the Stamford from Melbourne. I was craving some good sushi and wasn’t sure what to expect in Adelaide but WOW! The Crane has exceptional staff service, and the man who I’m assuming is the main chef/owner is so nice! The food was absolutely delicious and everything was so fresh and clear in flavour! They also had a beautiful selection of sake.

This is my 1st time come to this restaurant and the last time, we ordered the bento box. When the staff put the rice in the bento box, he taste the rice scoop after he finish every bento, that is very horrible and we same as tasting his drool, which is very nausea.
Food quality is horrible. all the meat is use the mince meat to make it, and deep fried and the scallop sashimi is not fresh.
This restaurant is very disappointed, I recommend need to improve the hygiene and food quality. This is the 1st time i had the worst japanese food in the world.

Food was ok not what I expected teriyaki table was Broken. The staff didn’t understand me when I ordered and they closed the kitchen so early.

I have been Japan 3 times before. All the sushi here are tasted good. The sashimi is fresh. I don’t know why people said the tuna tataki is raw as a negative comment . Come on, tuna tataki is raw!
Have to wait for the food but it deserved. All the sushi and roll are fresh made.
The teriyaki chicken bento is excellent!
We ordered the big platter, it looks normal but the taste is excellent.

We ate here tonight, I was craving Mexican but the majority ruled and we went for Japanese
, the vibe was right, the food was not amazing and the staff were less than happy we were there. We got the miso which was cold and not enjoyed by the bigger dude. It should be served hot to touch! We... also got the sushi banquet and the karaage chicken. Have to say for $78 the platter was not exciting and had very little variation for a Japanese restaurant on Saturday night down at the bay, warm, westernised sushi, mushy sashimi and we felt like we insulted Wasai by even being there. Hate to negatively review, but I was not satisfied. I understand the rating now. Now to order pizza because I'm hungry and just want some happy food after this bad experience.

I made the mistake of not looking at the review before going in there, but I regret it. Even though the place looks nice and the ambiance is quiet and clean, the food disappoints from the start.

We tried the tuna tataki as entree and it was totally raw, not seared as it's supposed to be and it tasted not fresh.

Then we order maybe 4 different rolls of Sushi and they were all very poor in flavour. They looked good, but they were tasting only like mayonnaise. We order one with tuna and one with Salmon, and two more with prawn that left us without any desire to go back.

This place has everything to be a great restaurant, the premises, location and environment are good, the service was friendly but not good enough to repeat that food.

They should get different chef(s), I think the food was expensive even expensive for the taste they provide.
Momo
Nice enough service and setting, but the food is strictly amateur. Neither deep enough in flavor nor skillfully prepared enough to qualify as Japanese restaurant. I have a hunch its Chinese run.

Nice Japanese atmosphere, fresh, clean, large restaurant. Friday night was reasonably busy (but not full) and as such it took a while for each dish to come out. Food was nicely presented and generally tasty. My lemon lime & bitters was quite watery. Would return at a quite time.

Returned a year later on a Monday night, much quieter and quicker service. Food was very nice. Enjoyed the beef tataki.

Ladies Lunch group 27th February. This year were are trying international cuisine Japanese was the first choice.

Finding venues on a Saturday was difficult but the Crane was open.
All discussions with booking the venue was via messenger and responses were in a timely manner so no complaints there.

I had a group of 10 people who wanted teppanyaki at one BBQ plate. ..no problems

I picked the set menu chicken & beef $59 pp also included was soup, fried rice, salad, and rice wine. Good value
I also asked about the BYO option ($10 corkage) as their wine list is very small .,..unknown names and pricey.......no problem.
example for me $9 champers + $10 =$19 cheaper than their bottles.

Well.......... what a great time we had!!!!! Food delicious and plenty of it! Fantastic fun watching it being cooked. Our wines were served as needed. When lunch was over we asked to be moved upstairs away from BBQ area for more drinks and chatting ...no problem

Josh who was looking after us was just great ....nothing was too hard and he was friendly and funny. He made the day for us. My 1st time at teppanyaki was great fun and all the ladies enjoyed themselves

Go if you want a new experience. ......

I found a dead, boiled fly in my cup of green tea, which ended up in between my lips at the last few sips. I was mortified. I ran straight to the toilet and my fiance followed me to see if i was okay. We returned to collect our goods only to find that they had cleared the table. Quite underhanded?

I had questioned the strange taste, smell and texture of the tea from the start, but assumed it was just Chinese tea.

The staff could not appreciate the seriousness of what had happened. I was distraught and ill for the rest of the day. All that the staff could say was they will make sure the cups are clean next time!

In the end they did us a favor and waived the green tea and so only made us pay for the meal, which we did not even get to finish. Super poor experience & serious hygiene concerns ! !!

It's a shame as the food was good, however we certainly will not be returning. The staff showed no care.

Gem of Glenelg. A must visit restaurant.
Superp high quality fresh foods & service. Moderate pricing. Good ambient for all occasions with different sitting. Sushi bar, A la carte and Teppanyaki.

We came in for a quick weeknight meal and were pleasantly surprised. Delicious teppanyaki - we had chicken and beef. Good service, meals came out quickly. Well priced and will certainly be back again.

What a top night. Having never experienced a Teppanyaki restaurant before I was unsure what was coming. We had the meat lovers banquet and I was delightfully surprised. The food was cooked and served with a flair I can only imagine is part of the experience but the staff were all super friendly and courteous. The food was cooked perfectly and was extremely tasty. The highlight for me was the wagyu steak and the chef trying to toss pieces of egg (wilfully) into our mouths from the hotplate. A tasty and entertaining place for a night out with friends. Highly recommended for a group night out.

Food was OK. Not the best. Service was crap and didn't really get everything that we ordered. No follow up on anything. Waiting staff to focused on talking and cleaning empty tables. More focus of customer experience would be better

I stopped go to this restaurant after the last teppanyaki chef quit. I went back the crane last weekend with my wife ~ the taste just not right as last time. Service is same like usual ~bad~

I was having a vacation with my boyfriend at Glenelg and I felt like having some Japanese food. When we walked in there, we were fascinated with the decoration of the restaurant. The food is very delicious, I love the sushi very much and the service is excellent. I would like to come back for dinner to try for the ala cart menu!

Booked this restaurant one month in advance for an important birthday celebration involving friend from Sydney, babysitting for the event and a special teppanyaki reference to the past. The owner confirmed the booking at a teppanyaki table. Phoned to double confirm the booking the night before, only to find that we had been bumped off our booking to make way for a big party of 23. Was told "We are fully booked now, can you come earlier or sit somewhere else in the restaurant. " We were devastated. No phone call from them - no apology - and the owner was rude. This is not the way we do business in Australia. Avoid this restaurant.

If you don’t give a try!! You will never know the ambience and the authenticity of this restaurant. I have been to a lot of Japanese’s restaurants but none can be compared with this one. If you are on vacation and really want some good Japanese food then crane Japanese restaurant is the ideal spot for you. It is much closer to the beach compared to other restaurants in that locality and way more spacious. The décor is fascinating. The management has done a great job with timbers and black to give a modern feel rather than same old traditional Japanese taste. Moreover, it is a suitable spot to spend your Saturday night with friends and family.

The most important thing – staffs were really friendly and helpful. They might indulge you with too long a conversation which in my personal view is useless. All the staffs are cheerful and what I felt most that they pretty much love to be there.

Crane Japanese Restaurant offers shushis, Teppanyaki along with regular Japanese items. But these two are everyone’s favorite. This restaurant is made to be a one stop shop for these Japanese foods. They have the sushi train at the back; sit down dining area in the middle and Teppanyaki area at the front.

I had been to a lot of Japanese restaurants but eventually I thought of giving a try to this one. I was greeted with a charming staff who very politely asked me where I would like to sit. I choose the main dining are for deciding after they gave me the menu. I am a shushi fan, so thought of giving a try to see how it stands in comparison with its competitors. Result is as expected. It stands out really good and in my personal view it is the best one can offer in that price range.

Overall price was manageable, ambience was good, staffs were very cheerful and I would like to give this restaurant 4.5 out of 5 and I am looking forward to try other items as well.

The food in this restaurant is delicious. They offer a really good service and prices are affordable. They offer a good show while preparing the meals and the plates are well presented. The place is very pretty, it is good for family and friend reunions. My kids love the aquarium.

I have been to a couple of Japanese restaurants along Jetty Road but none can be compared to the Crane. judging by the way the waiters welcomed me and my pal into the place, I knew this was the perfect place to be. Not mentioning the sweet aroma that made us confused of what to choose for our dinner. With the suggestion of a kind waiter, we opted for teppanyaki, which was amazing. I could never have wanted any more than that at the moment. Though I did not witness it being cooked but I had to ask for the chef who did it.
Any day any time, I would recommend The Crane Japanese Restaurant. Nice food,,and kind waiters

My family and I were on vacation, and my sons were really wanting some good Japanese food. I had a recommendation from a friend who lives in the area, so we decided to check it out. We all really loved it! We tried quite a few of the different types of sushi, and they all tasted great, fresh, and delicious. The service was really good, really fast, and everyone was very friendly. We will definitely be coming back on our next trip into town!

We had such a bad experienced tonight, food wasn't fresh, bad service , staff didn't know how to deal with customers , won't come back and also do not recommend to anyone else!

my partner and I love this restaurant the food was great. the staff friendly and served you well even though there was the train to choose from they still ask what would you like. the inertia is beautiful. the prices reasonable and they have a separate menu for main menus.

If you don't try it, you never know!!. Before I started writing my review, I read some of the reviews about The Crane and to my astonishment, there's has been a few not so good reviews.

I went to eat there last night at The Crane with a friend, yes the restaurant was a little quiet (about 3 or 4 tables) and we had a mixture of hot food and sushi but we had a wonderful experience.

The staff was so nice and friendly and the food was fantastic. The sushi was my favourite, especially the Salmon Sashimi..fresh as it should be.

Working in the food industry, this is as fresh as you can get.

My friend on the other hand prefers the hot food, not much of a sushi person...

We will definitely be back; going to try Teppanyaki next time round.

I'm really surprised that other people have written good reviews about The Crane. Our experience was well below average. Food wasn't fresh and when pointed out the Sashimi looked dry and like it was plated up earlier and then placed in the fridge. The staff argued with us that it was fresh this morning. Yes perhaps it was when you made up the plate and put it in the fridge for service in the morning but by the time the evening service came around it wasn't so fresh! The rice in the sushi had a sour taste and the servings were very small for the price. We ordered a bottle of wine and they took the bottle away with at least one glass still in the bottle. Overall, not impressed and won't dine here again.

Poor food poor service I u.... Poor food poor service
I used to work there before but I didn't want to my fd visited me
I can't recommend as a ex staff

Expensive food, bad service. Went there with a couple of friends last week, looked good from the outside. We only realized our mistake when we looked at the menu, good choices, but extremely expensive. Prices are at least 50% more than what you would expect for such a restaurant.
Also, I don't know what kind of people they have employed as waiters and wait staff, because none of them seem to understand basic instructions. Mixed up our drink orders and even had the nerve to charge us extra for it!
Never going back there again. Don't recommend it to anyone else either. Plenty of Japanese places in the city area which have much better service and better prices.

Love the Creamcheese sushi! Cheaper than sushi train!

Yummy sushi, good portion size and cheaper than other sushi trains.love their volcano sushi,it's even triangle shaped with a red lava sauce! Lovely decor and close to the beach and centre of Glenelg.i will come back again.

Overpriced food, sushi no fresh at all!!. Overpriced, bad service, food serve take so long, the sushi "rice" were too big and sour, and not fresh at all. Bad experience, will not visit again!
Brad
Frozen sashimi, frozen mass produced dumplings, average edamame. Give this place a miss.

Looks are decieving. My husband and I were there last night and I must say the resturaunt looks great! modern, elegant & especially that fish tank! So thumbs up for the design but unfortuantely the food did not live up to its expectation. We had sushi train, but hardly any sushi on the train, had to order off the menu, Which we didnt mind because it would be fresh this way. First thought, They dont have miso soup or udon noodles. (All japanese resturaunt do) I then ordered a couple of rolls which were quite westernised and didnt taste very fresh and served in a poorly triangle shape instead of round like the pictures. The crunchy prawn roll, nothing cruchy but soggy rice and soggy battered prawn. Shashimi? Well.. Your better off going to sushi train, again not fresh and the cut was horrible like trimmings of the end of a fish, didnt look appealing at all. I also ordered some hot food from the Sushi Train Menu which were about $4.80 a dish. When we got it, we thought Wow! for $4.80 they are quite generous. But when we got the bill they charged us for a main serve which was $12 each from the ala carte menu when i specifically ordered off the sushi train menu. Next minute our total bill was $100 for 2. So people! Pls double check your order size! In terms of service? Well the sushi chefs got our order wrong a few times, The waiter had limited english, which I couldnt understand why the australian waiter didnt serve as this may have avoided miscommunication or paying triple the price on some dishes! Overall, it was overpriced and although the hot food tasted good i didnt feel the overal experience was authentic or fresh. I would have preferred the good ol sushi train or better yet go to Wasai where they are reasonably priced with good quality fresh authentic japanese food.

A experience eating in the Crane. I and my friends went there few days ago. We are so surprising a new open Japanese restaurant in Glenelg and would to have a try. To be honest, I felt the taste of sushi train wasn't really like Japanese style, its more like western, in addition, the value of sushi is overpriced. When we walked in, there is no much food on the sushi train, what a funny condition. We ordered hot dishes like salt and pepper squids and main course, it was very fantastic, no doubt. The service wasn't good enough, most time their staff speak in their own language not in English. Seriously, I think the owner or supervisor really need to train their staffs and raise the quality of service. I wont come back again and never recommend my friends to go there.

The crane But. The food here is amazing however the wait staff are much to be improved on!, that is what let's this restaurant down big time.
We have been there 3 times and the wait staff haven't lifted their game.
We had a little japanese girl serve us and it was only her second day but she was 150 x better than the staff there.
The staff need to lift their game and want to serve and I promote this place.
You leave thinking the staff doesn't care less about the service they give you apart from the young lady that served us.
Come on guys u have a great restaurant and your chefs are great.....Lift Your Game!!!!

Don't really agree with the low rating. Thought the food was reasonably priced and nice!

Great Sushi. We had a range of sushi which was all fresh and tasty. Service was ok but the food certainly made up for it.

Insulting to customers. I'm a local went to try this and when we walked in without asking us the guy took us straight to the teppinyaki table . I said no we would like to look at the other menu . Anyway food apart from sushi was good court standard. I watched him take several other people to the teppinyaki table I can only assume because that's where theyake the money , after we finished nobody cleared out table or when we paid they continued to talk in their language without even looking at us . Would not go back ' hp to the Japanese on marina it's amazing food and service . This place is expensive food court food !

Great food, great service. Been here a few times now and both the food and service are consistently good. Love the choice of sushi, teppanyaki or ala carte. Great restaurant!

Had dinner as a group of three and I must share my fantastic experience. The service was excllent with all staff being friendly and attentive. My wife has food allergies and all the staff accomodated this without any issues and that is not always easy with Asian cusiene. The food was delicious and very authentique. We could not believe how well priced the restaurant is for such a high standard of food. My new favourite down the bay.

Best sushi on train and teppanyaki. Best sushi I ever had, lots of new sushi dishes which i cant find it at other places. Friendly staff. Newly renovated. Huge outdoor area. Teppanyaki wagyu beef melted in the mouth. I will their seafood next time.

Best Japanese restaurant in adelaide. WOW. Brand new restaurant been newly open 4 weeks only andI went there 3 times already to try their different section. First walk in is a Bar and Teppanyaki(the chef cook in front of you) , Best experience i ever had - delicious and the atmosphere are good. Second section is Fine dinner area, i tried some tapas and few main course which is a WOW. Last section is Sushi train - yummy, fresh and doesnt have 100 people standing behind you to rush to leave like other place.
Nice food and best service, i definately will come again for the fourth time very soon.
3 meter wide marine tank - WOW
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Simone
We had a table of 7 people and had ordered starters and mains. 2 of our starters never arrived and one of our guests received all their food whilst the rest of us waited for an hour watching them eat. The rest of our table then received their food with the exception of myself. another 45 mins later my sashimi and sushi platter arrived. the food was good but extremely overpriced. It was New Year's Eve and we gave the benefit of the doubt as the waiters were really nice but I won't be back.

Great start. Pleased to see The Crane finally open. First meal today and the Sushi and Sashimi were excellent. Great decor as well. Don't forget you can just have a drink - excellent outside on a day less blowy than today. Good to see another quality restaurant and bar in Glenelg

Crane Japanese Restaurant is a one stop restaurant for Japanese food down at the bay, Glenelg. It has sushi train, sit down area and Teppanyaki tables. I liked the set out of the shop and think it’s quite a novelty especially for a place like Glenelg. We had a table dinner this time. We felt that the food is a little westernized and I didn’t enjoy the sushi as much as other Japanese Restaurants. Maybe we will be back to try out their Teppanyaki.
Adelaidefoodcentral
With 4 other Japanese eateries along Jetty Road, it was always going to be interesting to see what the Crane had to offer. This place covers all bases by offering an a la carte menu, teppanyaki and sushi train. With so many choices, making a decision on which section to dine in was a difficult one, but as I wasn’t feeling too hungry, I went for the cheaper sushi train option.
