A truly hidden gem in Adelaide!
The place is tiny and hidden in the corner which you can easily drive past it. I have been here many times even for birthday occassions and this time I will write a review;
For appetisers, these are my top recommendations;
Yuca Frita (fried cassava with special dip), Pastelitos (guava paste and cheese pastry -super good), and Empanadas!
For mains; we had different sort of burgers, mainly with added jalapeños (pulled pork and beef burger were fantastic). Also, the bomb is La Bomba Arepas. It has all of the meat types they serve!! Man, it was super good. Arepa is a corn bread sort of wrap or bun and it tasted really soft.
Dessert would be taco and caramel pudim!
Best. Best. Best.
Lovely service, fabulous Latin street food. Very good empanadas, beautiful chimmichuri salsa to accompany. The bast arepas I’ve eaten in Australia, how lucky to have so close to home!
We actually got the Groupon voucher from this place and it was the right decision. If it is still on Groupon, get it! The ladies were very welcoming and friendly. It is such adorable quaint place. I noticed they also do uber so it is perfect to have your food delivered on a lazy night. We had the cassava chips, empanada, and the arepas. My favourite was the Tevor arepa among the other ones we had. The meat filling was so tasty! We also had some drinks but forgotten to take photos of it. I will come back here again even without the voucher.
On recommendation we visited for Friday lunch. Dos Equis for starters (a really nice Mexican beer) and platefuls of mixed Empanada. Probably should not have attempted the Pastelitos.
A fair bit of attention is put into the food and we positively over ate (hard not to!). Definitely be back for more.
Nice little quaint cafe that offers a very good vego and vegan ( gluten and wheat free) menu with delicious coffee to match. Had the vegy fiesta with avocado as an extra. Ablsolutley delicious and at a fantastic price. Beautiful selection of authentic coffee which was a nice compliment to a small but not under done meal, also at a great price. Recommend giving this place a go, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Here at Foodie Ling we love street food, it is so honest and comforting. Recently we found outselves some South American street food in the form of Candela on Goodwood Road. Situated near the tram line, do keep your eye out for it as it is a small shop. We were there by happenstance and left very happy.
Awesome wholesome and, I assume, traditional Latino food. We had the arepas- pulled pork and chicken and avocado (upon recommendation from the waitress) and they were both delicious. Churro's were also great. An easy, tasty lunch or dinner stop.
I was after some good Latino food and this place was recommended. I had the Arepazo plate which are 6 different flavoured fillings of mini arepas. The flavour ranged from pork, 2xbeef, chicken, bean and salad. They were awesome and quite filling. For a snack I had the yuca fritos which came with a Chipotle sauce. I had to order the burger named El Mechado which was pulled skirt steak, jalapeño, mayo, cheddar cheese and tomato. It was so good and I smashed it down. They have some interesting soft drinks took try also. The place only has 4 x tables so be quick if you want to sit down and enjoy some great food! Latino flavours will bring me back!
I had a pretty great experience here!
The venue is very confused - it feels more like a takeaway fish & chips shop with a super commercial logo. You can't fit many in, and sometimes the wait is long.
But we went the other night before a movie at the Capri & our experience was lovely. The server was really enthusiastic & helpful - explaining the menu to us in all of our glorious ignorance.
We ordered only a couple of things to share as we were pushing for time, and they were incredibly delicious. Pockets of meat in a corn flour casing & a fried plantain (special) with pork, sauces & a bit of a coleslaw.
It was a lovely little meal with wonderful service right before a movie & will be back - probably just for some takeaway!
Will definitely return for seconds. Loved this little gem. Great food, great service. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend the Pork Arepas
OMG. BEST BURGER EVER!!!!!!!!!! I ATE IT REALLY SLOWLY
Fantastic food but have the chips changed...?. We tried out this darling little 'food van in a shop' and found it to be just what they describe and the reviews here are pretty accurate, by and large. My only gripe is with the chips - the photos from previous reviews here don't match the 'run of the mill deep fried from frozen' look and flavour of the ones we got... We'll be back for everything else though for sure (and hopefully Candela read their urbanspoon reviews and go back to those sexy chips we saw in the earlier reviews).
Candela is a great little restaurant with loads of potential to be much better with a better set up and slight improvement on the menu. It is reasonably priced and this sets it apart from the rest. Upon entering the place we felt that although the music was great it lacked character and atmosphere. The food came out quickly and all at once, it was more than sufficient for us two. We ordered the fries (9/10), they were hot and crispy. The chicken (5/10) and pork (8/10) corn bread varied in texture and flavour, chicken was bland, pork packed full of flavour. The empanadas were mostly a let down as the ham and cheese (6/10) resembled a toasted sandwich as such and tuna (3/10) empanada felt as tuna out of a can, the dough however, was fresh and crispy. The SA apple cider on sale was delicious (9/10) once again let down by the red Tempranillo wine which tasted off (4/10), we were adviced the wine was a recent addition to the menu.
We will return again as this place has a huge potential for a Latin American restaurant and hopefully improves on it's menu slightly.
Was looking for something that wasn't subway or the usual fast food rubbish, something tasty, warm but not too heavy. Stumbled on this little place and haven't turned back. Only negative... This is my fourth time here this week!
Yummy. Loved this food!!! Good price for the portion size. Tasty!! ChimiChurri sauce was a great accompaniment (not hot ...bit runny but worked).
Not huge dishes but filling. Great fresh flavours.
Yuca (cassava...root vegetable) chips with chipotle mayo..yum...needed more mayo
Only feedback....the dulce de leche dipping sauce (caramel condensed milk syrup) was far too runny.
Menu could do with a couple more variety of dish styles.
The place only seats max 14 inside at a squeeze, 12 max outside...not licensed, cannot take BYO. (I think it's on the agenda).
For a quick casual bite, without fanfare and fuss....can't go wrong...a nice change from the multitude of hipster burger joints everywhere that offer this style of eating venue.
Delicious! My goodness this place is great. I've tried the arepas and cuban sandwich and highly recommend the arepas. The only feedback I have is that the arepa portion is a bit small for the cost. I think this is a great eatery that will be a huge success if they get their portions right.
Amaizin Venezuelan Foods!!!!. Hello everyone:
I would like to recommend CANDELA LATIN AMERICAN FOOD REST, the best!!!!! amazing arepas, everything, good location, wonderful, warm and sweet owners, Nella and Carlos, thanks for be here at Adelaide!!! It was delicious to eat the "Churros with chocolate", the ".Pabellon".Definitely is one of the best awesome Venezuelan restaurant, plus the music, cool Latin music so to everybody I recommend this place!!! go go go!!!!
From the moment we stepped in the door, we knew we had made the right choice. Tantalising aromas from the kitchen wafted through the room, and we were greeted by a Venezuelan princess. With the added dimension of the music, we felt as though we had stepped into Venezuela herself. On the matron's advice, we ordered two arepas, one chicken and one pork, and 'Venezuela's national dish'. We were not disappointed. The arepas were each a taste explosion, the chicken a perfectly balanced combination of chicken, avocado, garlic and mayonnaise, and the pork hearty and tangy. Just when we thought things couldn't get any better, we were delighted by the authentic churros with chocolate and dulce de leche. Golden and crunchy on the outside, impossibly soft and fluffy on the inside. With one last spoonful of salsa, we were on our way, safe in the knowledge that our next visit to Candela, the Australian heart of Venezuela, would not be far away.
Arepas are very yummy ... Crunchy corn cakes with tasty meats and sauce ... Well worth a try ... I also enjoyed the churros ... The woman who served us was excellent and very enthusiastic ... Another great addition to Goodwood Road
Addictive. I love this place and can't keep away from their pork Arepas.
The secret sauce is highly addictive!
It's got a great atmosphere too - love the music!
Somehow, despite travelling Goodwood Road often, I'd never noticed Candela Latin American. It's only a small place, sure, but it's not like it's hidden. Now that I have found it, I may just be a regular visitor. Mrs Plate and I took in an early evening movie and decided we wanted something small for dinner. Candela was just the ticket. Candela is available for dine in eating or take away, but be aware there are only 4 tables inside. Luckily for us, there was a free table, which we were only to happy to claim. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress who gave us a couple of menus and offered to help us with anything we were unsure of. After much deliberation, we decided on a Pelua Arepa and a Jamon Empanada. An Arepa is a grilled corn pocket that is crunchy on the outside and moist inside, filled with your choice of filling, which for us was the Pelua - slow cooked beef with a Latin American sofrito. We also ordered a home made lemonade, which was out first an
I’ve been meaning to try Candela Latin American but everytime C and I plan to go we realise they aren’t opened Saturday lunch. Finally on a Friday night we made it to this cute little Latin American joint down Goodwood – I really love finding these hole in the wall gems. Refreshing Latin American soda that tasted like Kirk’s snowdrop but a whole heap better! These piping hot giant cylinders of chips were soft and pillowy on the inside but still had a crispy crunchy outside. Dusted with flavour filled seasoning and dipped into the sauce of the day made for a very very good first impression. Papitas Frittas Crunchy corn pocket that was still soft in the inside yet was a bit crispy on the outside and stuffed with shredded beef that broke away so easily. I’m guessing the beef was cooked in some type of stock to make it so full of flavour. Slathered with sofrito which is a sauce made up of capsicum, onion, garlic and spices was the perfect hit for this. Quite a dense dish but oh so good. Pelua Arepas ($8.50) The pelua arepas was made up of pulled pork with a gravy of capers, red wine, cumin, opregano and orange juice. After eating my pelua arepas the pernil arepas seemed a bit more toned down in flavours but still good. Pernil Arepas ($8.50) We came here when they were offering some complimentary desserts during Valentine’s day period so we got to try the quesillo which is a South American creme caramel. It had a bit more form than I expected but the caramel sauce was not too sweet. Complimentary Creme Caramel We also tried the rice pudding which is something that I’m not used. It tasted alright and just like rice after a while but I prefer my rice savory.
