Review The Big Mexican Rancho - Gymea

Had dinner here the other night and it hit the spot. We got the chicken enchilada & beef taco and a large works nachos. The enchilada and taco combo comes with rice, sour cream and some beans. The enchilada was on the smaller side but, the rice and beans will definitely leave you full. The housemade chilli sauce is also very nice, a smokey flavour with a little heat behind it. Service was attentive. Recommended 👌

This place is tucked away right down Gymea Bay road you turn right into a clump of small shops kind of like a side street off the main road,you will see the Sombrero hanging off a cactus in the window. The place got packed we arrived at about 6 just before it had more arrivals .Its got a nice look to it inside.They honour seniors cards and give a 10% discount and you can also BYO bottle which I recommend a nice light red goes down very well with Mexican food.First up came the small chicken nacho, oh my delicious ...the wine quickly dissapeared needed another one really it was a friends birthday.I ordered a beef burrito with salad and sour cream, if you go to a Mexican resturant you need to diverge into other things but the Burrito is a good standard measure of how it is, and oh my ...this was good. Slow cooked done to perfection slightly too salty but not to the point of too much.Portions were large and prices were well positioned for the quality.Everybody around was having fun with the hats and enjoyoling the food.Really this place is a gem the locals probably all know about but the rest of sydney is mostly unaware which is kind of good . Id say you probably cant find anything better than this and because I like Mex food is hits as good as it gets ,five stars thumbs up with this they are doing a great job here .

This was a wonderful experience. We had the trio of dips (cheese is necessary), chimichangas, kids nachos, tacos and other Mexican delights. Our 3 kids were immediately accommodated with pencils to use on the tablecloth. The atmosphere was excellent. Great decor, such a warm Mexican feel. There was a tiny delay because the iPad menu wasn’t feeding directly to the kitchen. We were apologised to twice. We didn’t even notice. The kids meal includes a huge ice cream. I couldn’t fault the food. BYO is only $2 corkage.

Great family Mexican. Meals were very generous and super tasty. The whole family was happy thank-you. The hot Cheese dip and bean dip were a great start. The staff very friendly and quick to serve. The added bonus of BYO is great!

The food is very good. I'm so glad I found a Mexican restaurant that keeps it authentic. Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere.

Fast and nice service, delicious dips and tasty food. Small restaurant so when it gets busy it is rather loud and it can get warm.

If you want to try something a little bit different from mexican food, this the place. They serve very tasteful dishes.

Massive plates very yummy food I love the atmosphere and the staff very friendly and the food very tasty. We know for next time to not have a big starter, cause the mains and huge and I hate wasting food when it’s so yummy

I've been to this place a few times now. It's a fair distance from me, but I'll go in for a feed when I'm near. If I lived closer, I'd go more often. The food was amazing, the prices are good, and the staff is efficient and friendly. I've tried a bunch of different Chicken dishes there, and they were all amazing. Also my tolerance to chili has changed dramatically recently so I've had to cut right down. When I was into the hot stuff they had the goods. Nowadays I require a much milder meal, and the food was just spiced just right as per my request. Wonderful!

Best Mexican in Australia. Been going for many years. Acapulco Chicken is my favourite! So is the nachos and the chilli con queso..yum yum yum

Was just ok but will not rush back, might be ok with 2-4 people but with 13 service was average, food took for ever to come out was over 15min from the first main to come out and 15 minutes latter the last main come out, most of the table was finished before the last person ate, large plate serving but small on taste.

Nothing beats this place! Love love love the Rancho! ���

Great service for a busy early Saturday evening dinner. Ordered 3 dips, for mains a couple of prawn dishes and a combo chicken dish. Size was good, but all lacked authenticity. Nothing in my prawn and tomato dish screamed Mexican food. It could have been Greek or Italian if my eyes were covered. Bland comes to mind. Why is it so difficult to find a good Mexican restaurant in Sutherland Shire!?

We came here for dinner ordered the chilli dip with garlic bread. The garlic bread came out cold. Main meals were good i had the deluxe nachos my friends had the fijitas with rice and the other shrimp with rice for dessert we had the churros good night top off had a glass of sangria

Servings are Big Big Big.  Staff are lovely, the food is okay.  The meal was satisfying but nothing exceptional, was typical suburban tex mex.  My biggest disappointment of the meal was the salad that came with my meal. It is served on the piping hot plate the rest of the meal was on. This means after 5 minutes of being at the table, you have cooked salad, which really is inedible. Insiders tip, if having salad as part of the meal, ask for it on a side plate (problem solved).

Really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was authentic Mexican cuisine - some the best I have eaten anywhere in Sydney. The service was good and the staff friendly, helpful and efficient. Very lively and popular. Will definitely return.

My partner pre booked a table. We arrived to be ignored by two staff members, after 15 minutes I walked into the second section of the restaurant and flagged down a member of staff. It then took an additional 5 minutes to find our booking and an available table. <br/>Once we were seated we were quickly left and to wait 15 minutes for someone to approach us to take our drinks order however we then chose to leave. <br/>Very disappointing.

Great tasty food.<br/><br/>Had a lovely night out dining with my partner and friends at this out of the way gem which we heard about through word of mouth. Glad we discovered it as the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was fun. Overall a great experience, and we will definitely be back for more.

I never write reviews but it was so bad I have to. Overall one of the worst dining experienced ever. My husband and I have frequented this restaurant over 30 years and we won't be going back again. Food was ok but the service was horrific. They had greedily over booked the restaurant and were arrogant to think they could run it the way they did and charge people for it. They even as much as demanded a tip! So disappointing, will be telling anyone in the shire and NEVER recommending them

Foods great, service slow. We last came through this place maybe a year back or so, and really loved the traditional mexican food and size portions, but we do agree with below reviews from prior times, they really just gotta improve serving times and taking orders..<br/><br/>Great restaurant and feel inside too, good little mexican restaurant otherwise.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. We recently went here for a birthday dinner and it was the most disappointing meal I can remember having - EVER. The service was atrocious. We were seated at 6:30 and we did not have our meals until 8:30. When we did receive our meals, they as others have pointed out, look like they are straight from a can, they look all pre-cooked and not even warmed sufficiently. My fajitas were not sizzling by any means, they were reheated strips of meat with some sort of cold tomato paste on the top of all the meat which completely ruined the dish. I could and do make better food on a nightly basis. I cannot believe people regularly rate this restaurant well - it is the worst restaurant in the Shire.

Best in the shire. This would have to be my favourtite food, and place to go for authentic mexcan!! I waitressed at El Chapparel mexican in heathcote think 28 years ago? that went fast. When they moved away the only other closest to that place is big mexican rancho ( think related too). I love and always will,,,,,is the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere,,,, maily the food ,, the shredded beef is amazing so tender and flavoursome.... id love to master that at home along with the chilli con queso dip, wow could eat a massive bowl of it... Just want to say to Nelci and Jimmy (sorry for spelling) THANKS KINDLY for all the times i walk in and welcomed with warm smile, great service and that I can get my hit of mexcian close to home.. hate mexican places to serve mince... love looooove the beef... I look forward to coming for many more years yet... Im typing this as im checking opening times to come get my hit today for take away... ALL THE BEST YOU GUYS KEEP SMILING!! KRISTY XO

Our old favourite looks great with the renovations just a shame they jacked the prices up to pay for it. $29 for a works nachos is ridiculous the beans weren't the same and the guac wasn't either can get better and cheaper from exquistos at miranda westfield

Nah. Really disappointing. I only order the take away jalapeno hot cheese poppers and pick up some beer on the way home.<br/><br/>Give this one a pass.

Pretty average. Not sure how this place got 80% likes - the food is very average and certainly not worth the cost. gave this place a go once but wont be going back again

Terrible service. Had a 7:30 booking, food was served at 9pm. I had the deluxe nachos (ha!) with beef. There was literally a teaspoon of beef with what looked like an emptied can of refried beans on top. Years ago I had a nice take away from here, but I won't take the chance again. Save your money and time and try any of the other many Mexican restaurants in the Shire, all of which are much better than this place.

RUDE STAFF! , went to get some nice food but was not soo good, a friends 18th, went back in after we left to grab something, and over heard a waitress say we were f*****g grubs, terrible people.

The worst mexican I have ever had! The bean dip tasted like they had opened a can of old El Paso beans and just melted some tasteless cheese through it. The enchiladas and the burritos looked the same - they both had cheese melted on top and were flat. <br/>We were so looking forward to this dinner and were disappointed. <br/>Don't waste your time or money going there. Next time we feel like mexican we will head to mad mex. At least they can get a burrito right.

I couldn't tell when the chef had finished talking.... When I was speaking to the chef he would finish a sentence but always looked like he was going to continue speaking. He would say something and then just stop and stare off into the distance and I had no idea when he was done talking or not...<br/><br/>I also concur with Genevieve Steiner that the food appeared to be a mixture of baby poo and dog food...<br/><br/>Two thumbs down...

Save yourself the indigestion, and get an old el Paso pack at Cole's. Not the best.

What a Shocker. This would have to be the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever frequented. The food and service were a disgrace - honestly they need to be brought into the 21st century and start serving meals using fresh ingredients not straight from the tin and warmed up in the microwave. Even that wasnt done properly either - crunchy hard rice and cold beans. Anyone reading this should take a trip to Narrabeen on the northern beaches and check out Mexicanos, fresh food, fantastic tastes and believe it or not they serve Margaritas..............can you believe it???

Really bad. Went there last week ordered at 7.15 and got meals at 8.30. Everyone was hungry and angry. They had no excuse for the late meal, just said to many take aways and sorry. If you hate someone, take them there for dinner. Never again.

Most disgusting service ever. A night out with friends and family at this poor exuse for a restaurant has to be one of the most disgusting dining experiences I have ever had.<br/>Started off by ordering Deluxe Nacho's for an entree. When they finally turned up they were just a plain order with ingredients missing. We then waited another hour and a half for our main course though we noticed other tables getting their food quicker, having arrived after us. We finally got the attention of a waitress who at first gave us the 'talk to the hand' gesture and questioned as to why our meals haven't arrived. They claimed that the order was misplaced and offered no apologies. All they could say was that it wasn't their fault. Nonetheless we paid for our drinks and left. This will be one place I will avoid until management changes hands and they learn a little customer service. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Average. Ok food, ok service, ok atmosphere, nothing amazing but not a disaster. Difficult to find great Mexican food in Sutherland area. Personally I like to cook and think my Mexican food is better!

Good Value Mexican. We're regulars and the food is always good. The service is variable though, but has improved lately. Not expensive and always a lively atmosphere inside.

Our meals were what appeared to be a concoction of baby poo and dog food, topped with a gelatinous sludge of melted cheese. Prior to eating at this so-called restaurant, I was unaware that chicken came from a can.

My favourite Mexican restaurant of all time...and believe me I've been to many. Have been a loyal and regular customer for 20 years. I crave it!!

Pleasant suburban Restaurant - staff were friendly and we had our meals within 5 minutes, so I can't agree with the previous review - however when we went the place was very quiet, so that may have helped. The Fajitas were very nice , even though we asked for chicken and got beef and chicken. If you feel like Mexican and are in the area, this is a good choice.
