Went here twice over 2 days for dinner while visiting the area. We ordered a mixture of meals including the mussels, hahn burgers, snitzels and kids meals. All the meals were brilliant in terms of taste, presentation and size an the staff were extremely friendly. Ordered 2 different deserts on the last night and very pleased with both. While I would not rate the food as exceptional it certainly deserves it 5 stars in terms of value for money.
I hadn’t been here in years and I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised by my recent visit here. The place has had a face lift but still retains its classic feel. The menu is everything you’d expect, but so much more when you order. The staff and kitchen were amazing at catering for my allergies, this scotch fillet was melt in my mouth delicious with roast veggies and they had sweet potato fries!! So many places are still yet to embrace the sweet potato fries. Above and beyond service, great food once again!
Huge servings of traditional German dishes that never disappoint. I have visited the German Arms many times and I'm always impressed with the bold flavours and dishes that are always cooked and presented well. Warm, inviting, perfect for a cold winter's day.
A must do visit, on the high street, a little step back in time place that we usually take visiting friends to, although it’s not the type of place I would ordinarily visit. Great place for giant bratwurst and beer paddles, service can be sketchy, and not always Uber nice if they are busy and think you’re another tourist. Personally I can’t stand schnitzel so I’m not going to waste your time. Apparently for aficionados (hahahaha) they aren’t the best.
"When in Hahndorf 🤷🏻♀️" was our quote of the day and definitely applied when justifying the quantity of food we were going to order at the German Arms. Apart from the obvious giant hotdog, we also ordered the zigeunerschnitzel and the freshly baked pretzels, accompanied by half a litre of imported German beer each.
Oh boy. Each dish we ordered was so delicious. The combination of flavours of the hotdog, the perfect crumb and peeled tomato topping of the chicken schnitzel, the fresh, warm pretzels... and that mustard! How have I deprived myself of quality mustard my entire life?!
Fantastic staff and our food came out SO quickly, which was a bonus.
Needless to say, we didn't have any room to try dessert and struggled to move our over-eaten selves through the rest of our Hahndorf-exploration day, but... when in Hahndorf 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve been here multiple times and usually my parents and I have really enjoyed he food and had fantastic service. However the last two times we have been left waiting for our food for over an hour and seen poeople around us get served the same dishes we had ordered who had arrived later. The second to last time we honestly waiting over an hour and 35 minutes maybe more for food but the waitress was nice enough o give us a free drink I suppose when she realised what had happened. Yesterday it wasn’t as bad but still an hour and watching others receive same dishes before us was a little bit agitating.
Both of us really enjoy the meals, personal favourites are the steak and the huge Krasnoyarsk. Service staff are friendly enough and it’s nice to go somewhere with table service. It is a little bit pricy but the serving size is massive and overall taste of food is good. We will come here again because we know the food is good however I really hope they work on there speed of delivery especially when it isn’t busy like yesterday
With not many options around for an early dinner we decided to try Hahndorf's local pub. Service was friendly and we went for the schnitzel given we were in a German town. I got the chicken and my partner got the beef, both with mushroom sauce, coleslaw and chips. This was washed down with some beer. The venue is quite dated and has pokies and also tv screens with horse racing or other sports too. Sorry only the 1 pic as my phone died after being out on the road all day sight seeing.
Not a bad spread at the German arms hotel. Went for the feast for 2 which had a bit of everything. Meal was tasty and filling on a cold winters day. Worth a try.

Old wordly charm a place that reminds me of my childhood the hotdogs are still as long as my arm! The customer service is excellent although the pay after your meal was a bit awkward especially as this is often a busy place. I miss the potatoe skins they sadly are not on the new menu.
We have ordered ' German frest for two and beef steak ' it really nice and delicious. That day was father day, good weather and view was great either. Thank you 😊
I am writing this in retrospect as I had taste of the German Arms Hotel offerings back in September 2015 when I visited relatives in Adelaide SA. Enthusiastic for me to see more of the countryside, my cousins took me to what was supposed to be one of the earliest German settlements in Aus-- Hahndorf! Not a far drive from Adelaide main, the place speaks volume about a long ago era which most apparently has thrived and persisted. The place is an interesting destination and another cultural experience. And what can we all take from the enduring past is food and the culinary footprints. I had the best example of this when we dined at the German Arms Hotel. Placing our orders without any idea how enormous each one is, we had our open mouth surprises! I ordered the rack of beef ribs with its sides; my Kuya wanted to trio of sausage samples; my niece and nephew decided to share the German feast for two which really amounted to a feast for a family! Everything was done not in moderation so we ended up taking most of it home! We enjoyed our food with cider and beer. It's a good thing that we started our tour with eating so we were able to burn some of of the previous delights walking around the beautiful town. I don't think my pictures can do justice to what I was talking about but nonetheless I am posting it.
Insane neat Fest!
We ordered a platter for two and three of us could not finish it. The cheese kransky was full of smoked flavour and the pork Knuckle so soft with perfect crackling on the edges.
The hand made pretzels were soft and had a snap to the outer crust, just perfect.
It's a great place if your looking more massive meals
We were certainly not doing that but felt like doing some traditional stuff while here. I'm watching some of the other meals come out and the hot dogs are the size of a football seriously.
Beer galore we opted for some wine which was an average selection and some of the wine we selected was not available, nevertheless great.
I question if the Schnitzel was yearling or not but maybe that's what the Germans serve not Veal?
The food was fast, filling and enjoyable
All staff were exteamly friendly -the man at the front entrance was amazing! Funny, friendly, helpful very enjoyable part of our day! :)
When the weather is cold we love to come here for Soup in a Roll, but make sure that if this is what you want that you ring on the day to see if it is available, as depending on which soup is on the menu will depend if it is served IN a Bread Roll. Today we were lucky as Pea and Ham Soup was on the menu as only thick soups are served this way. Today was a Friday and the place was extremely busy but we had pre-booked a table so we were quickly seated. Our soup was ordered and came out within a few minutes, fortunately for us but unfortunately for others we tucked into it before realising we hadn't taken a photo but trust me it looked and tasted so yummy. The staff were friendly and attentive and there were plenty of staff taking care of all the guests. I eagerly looked at all the other meals coming out and they all looked really yummy too and good sized serves, The choices on the Specials Menu and the Daily Menu where plentiful and varied. The desserts looked really good too. We will definitely come back again and try some other dishes. Hahndorf is a lovely German Town where you can easily spend an several hours or an entire day searching out all the shops and of course enjoying Lunch or Dinner here.
Say what you will about the German Arms but when it's a cold and rainy day in Hahndorf this is the place to be. Grab a spot by the fireplace, a giant hot dog, and a pint of your favourite beer and you might soon find yourself transported into a Bavarian fairytale (and not the brothers Grimm kind). Sadly, I must take off points for the bread bowl soup which is more often miss than hit.
Went for a drive to Hahndorf over the long weekend and couldn't go past this place. It was very busy and We had to wait about 40 mins for a table which was only my fault for not booking ahead. I couldn't complain as it gave us all an opportunity to taste test the best German brews had to offer. I ordered the beef ribs which were incredible, moist, tasty, succulent and fell off the bone. Unfortunately that's were the good news ended. Other meals on the table including the daily special were far from special. I'd go back again but I'd have to order to ribs again to avoid disappointment. They need to be consistent with there dishes otherwise others will turn to the Hahndorf inn just up the road.
Good German food. We tried the German feast platter which was great for $60 the only bad thing on there was the schnitzel it was dry, chewy and the crumbing was falling off. Part from that the selection of sausages were delish, pork hock had super tender pork meat, saurkraut and Potato sides were good aswell as the pretzels. Can't go wrong with a stein of lowenbrau on the side :-)
Hahndorf is in the Adelaide hills area a 30 odd minute drive east of Adelaide city. Traditionally a German village which was established when the area was first settled, it has now become a bustling weekend hotspot for locals and tourists alike. It has one main street which is choc full of specialty shops and eateries, mainly with a German theme.
I like this place..cozy, spacious, nice food. I came there on monday night and there was a promo of mussels for $14. I had the mussel while my partner had steak. Ohh man that was a generous portion of mussel. It's cooked with tomato, wine, onion and I forgot the rest. Served with toast bread. One word to describe 'mamamia'
One word: fan-bloddy-tasic! The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice with a great selection of beer and the food was absolutely fantastic! Very traditional and big portion for cheap costs!
We come here every 5 years or so and have been having Christmas Eve Dinner at the Arms every time. The food is great, the beer even better. The service is generally brilliant although I expected the waitstaff to be a little be more knowledgable with the beer and its availability.

Hearty german food. I recommend the beers and the kransky cheese sausage; I love how the melted cheese bursts in your mouth :) the snitzel was freshy cooked and the mushroom sauce was amazing!
Arrived just before midday today and were very glad we did, as within 20 minutes, the place was completely full! Lovely spring weather on a Sunday, in the tourist town of Hahndorf.I chose the Pork Schnitzel, with mushroom gravy and the "famous" rhine potatoes (cost $19.00).Not sure why they were famous, as they were just small 'baked in jacket potatoes', in a mustard dressing. Not sure if they were meant to be served cold but they were. Cold spud, with the hot schnitzel and gravy piled on top of them. Quite strange. The schnitzel was very nice and the gravy was lovely but the cold spud really didn't do it for me. I ordered a side salad at an extra cost of $3.50 - 4 bits of cos lettuce, 2 cubes cucumber and 1 cherry tomato. Bit of a rip off!My partner had the Pulled Pork Burger, with fries. ($18.00). He said it was very tasty and quite filling.Being a German Pub, there was a great choice of beers. I'm not normally a beer drinker but I did enjoy a schooner of "Franzishaner Hefe Weissbier Hell", which is a wheat beer with flavours of Banana and Vanilla. Not too bitter and quite smooth. The pub is well set out, atmosphere was good, the service was quite quick and the staff were very friendly. On the whole, the food was nice but cold spud under a hot schnitzel plus a $3.50 salad that hardly had anything in it, was disappointing.
Visited the German arms on a bucks party through the adelaide hills. The staff were kind and very welcoming. The food is exactly how you would expect a German pub... HUGE. The standard menu was great aswell. I cannot believe the size of the giant hotdogs.
The German Arms Hotel in Hahndorf is full of history and was first established back in 1839. It’s known for its large selection of local and German beers, as well as their pub style meals. Adelaide Food Central was invited to sample some of their dishes today. All food and drink were provided free of charge.
Had lunch in here after a day out in hahndorf :) Lunch was lovely although it took a lot of time getting our order in and having our food. However, the restaurant was super crowded so its fairly understandable i suppose. We had the pulled pork burger and the trio of wurst. Overall i believed the worst was overwhelming and it felt like there were a lot of things happening on the plate but thats just my personal opinion. It was a really cool how experience though :)
Was a very nice place. Food was lovely. Had the pretzels and pulled pork roll, Service was fantastic. Very German, nice beer. Highly recommend!!
Update 1st Jan 17:
Decided to go out for lunch and booked in at the German arms hotel, seated straight away with nice friendly service. I had no choice but to order a beer a 500mL size. Yum!! We ordered the pretzels as entree; they were nice but some salt baked in to the pretzel would have been good and maybe a bit warmer as well; however very nice the same! My partner ordered the pork hock which was very nice; crispy skin; however more sauce would have been lovely as it was such a tasty sauce! I ordered the trio of wursts served with seeded mustard. They all had unique flavours; but again needed more sauce; the sauce that came with the pork hock would have been a treat! Overall great service and great food; will return!
Awesome as always. It's been a while since we last visited but good to know the food is as delicious as our last visit.
Sizes are enormous!
Place is crazy busy but staff are still friendly, courteous and attentive. Hubby missed my wanting vegetables with my order, no problem, here it is and please keep the salad too. No crackling comes with kids roast, no problem, here it is.
Pepper sauce is very very hot so be wary if ordering for kids.
Still great place for Sunday lunch.
Nice place, good service, varied menu. Food was good. Drinks can be huge if desired. Worth a try
Great!. Took a while to get food on Easter weekend but could not fault any of the food. The mussels were just brilliant, ribs were large, tender and tasty, 3 types of wurst were excellent. Lastly, the Zigeuner schnitzel was also a hit!
I'll just say AMAZING. Definitely give it a go
Spot on, good cold beers....my dad's fav spot...
Great schnitzels!. Walk in customers on a weekend and were able to get a table out the front. Ordered at the bar, barman was slow and rude, did not serve customers in the order they arrived and no people skills. A cheery "be with you in a second" would have made all the difference. Ordered our dinner and drinks, headed out the front. Meals came quick enough, looked great, wait staff polite. I ordered the Zigeunerschnitzel, which was absolutely delicious, good sized chicken schnitzel and the sauce on top was absolutely beautiful, smoky with a little kick. My partner ordered the Kaseschnitzel which he enjoyed and couldn't finish. Great meal, service was okay, could pick up the game to really compete in Adelaide Hills pub experiences.
Great food. Just great food, love there 3 sausages
Very happy. My fiancé and I walked in without a booking on a weekday afternoon, we were attended to straight away and were given a lovely seat by the window. We had just the right amount of time to choose what we wanted and the waitress was back smile on her face and her order pad in her hand.
A burger and chips for me and a GIANT KRANSKIDOG and chips for my fiancé, it was MASSIVE! As was his German beer so guess who drove us home....
He has a big appetite but even he couldn't eat it all. We joked with the waitress when it arrived about the size of it. She laughed and commented that a lot of people cant finish it.
The noise of the renovations was a little off putting but nothing we couldn't handle and progress has its price.
We would go again.
Excellent. Walk in customers on a busy long weekend lunch. Were seated promptly and ordered the Bavarian plate to share with some sides. Meals arrived within 15 minutes and were excellent. All washed down with German beer on tap. Awesome and well recommended.
Pork Hock Triumph. The slow cooked pork hock is like a religious experience!
Slow service but excellent food. You must book if you want to be seated quick. We ordered a Chicken Krakau and a Jagerbrauten. Of course beer is a necessary accompaniment. The DAB beer was certainly a better choice.
The chicken was very tasty but a little dry. Still very enjoyable and very generous serving. However the Jagebrauten was amazing. It was cooked perfectly. The pork itself was crispy and delicious, while the filling inside is just yum! This is definitely a highlight of the menu. Do yourself a favour and order it!
Only 2 Vegetarian options on the menu. Best seats are at the front of hotel. Come here for a old world German experience. Great beer on tap options.
The German Feast for Two was great for sharing! Heaps to go around for the three of us and great for those who wishes to try bit of everything!
Food here is great but service is bad, after being seated we had to wait like 15 minutes before being asked what we would like, so we had to order drinks and meals at the same time otherwise we would have been waiting a long time, otherwise great food
Not here for good service, but food is good. Food is good but their service is a bit lacking. They're friendly but not attentive and seem to be too busy for customers. Still recommended for a good bite though.
Fantastic German Feast for 2. We had the German Platter today. It was great! The sausages were well done, the pork hock was tender and the schnitzel was succulent. Although, if I may add, it would be great if they had provided gravy for the schnitzel as it got dry quickly. The pretzels were toasted beautifully. There were three of us and we could hardly finish the feast - that showed how humongous the platter was. For drinks, we had the apricot wheat beer which was delicious. We will definitely return to try their other dishes.
Fine Feed. Good for a pub meal. Generous servings, tender beef schnitzel, although would have liked a salad with the meal. Had to ask for cutlery and was not given any water, but ok for a pub meal.
Breakfast of Champions. Sunday morning breakfast at the German Arms was FAB !, Service was absolutely amazing, prompt, friendly and efficient. Food was also great fresh, and tasty would highly reccomend.
Great food, good overall experience. Ate at the german arms for lunch on sunday with a few friends, me and another guy ordered the fest for 2, and wow was it filling, not to mention delicious. everything on the platter was very nice, pork hock was delish, schnitzel was juicy not dry, the sausages were varied and all very good, for $50 this is a great generous lunch for 2, and could easily fill 3 people.
service was fine, certainly nothing to complain about, and it was just very nice to sit out on the balcony on a nice sunday arvo with a stein of lager after a great meal.
ill definitely be back soon.
Good all round experience. Ive been to the German Arms a few times now and have always been happy with the experience. This time round I went for lunch with a group of friends. It was warm and cozy inside - the fireplace is really nice. The big windows are also great for letting all the winter sun shine through. Overall the service was friendly and attentive without been too "in your face". The meal sizes are huge at the German Arms and I think its fairly reasonably priced. On this occasion I just wasnt up for a huge meal as I was also heading out for dinner that night. I ended up sharing a tasting platter with a friend. Unfortunately there was nothing special about the tasting platter - some salami, metworst, bread etc.... nothing I couldnt have made up at home really. My friends meals looked quite nice - pumpkin soup, snitzel burger, snitzel etc. Overall everyone commented that they enjoyed their meals but felt maybe it wasnt worth the drive to Handorf just for a burger or snitzel. However, if you are going to spend the day in Hardorf then won't be dissapointed in the food. I dont drink beer but my friends who do really enjoyed the german beer!

Excellent dining experience. We ate there Saturday night and the place was pretty full when we arrived, so we didn't have high hopes of getting fed quickly.
WRONG !! We were promptly seated, had drinks and food orders taken within 5 minutes, and entree's at our table within 15 minutes.. The food was excellent quality and very generous serves. Both of us couldn't finish the desert.
Table service was first class, and both waitresses who attended to us were very helpful & polite. A pleasant change from most places these days. Will happily go there again.
Had an extremely good lunch experience at this fine hotel. When arrived we were quickly shown to a table (right next to the warm fireplace!) and given about five minutes to work out what we wanted. I ordered the slow roasted pork hock which came out in about 15 minutes. The pork hock was very tender and the accompaniments along with it (sauerkraut and kifler potatoes) were yummy!! Overall, great food, quality and quantity, and exceptionally good staff who seemed to know the ins and outs of every single dish!! Would recommend to anyone traveling through Hahndorf!
The steak was perfectly cooked. The orders were taken at the table - rather than the counter. The only drawback to an otherwise fantastic dining experience was there was no salad bar or complimentary bread.
