Always been a big fan of Japanese food and the freshness of the sashimi and sushi is amazing with no drop in quality over the years that I have eaten at this Japanese family owned establishment.
Beyond their sashimi, their fried (tatsutage) chicken and home made dumplings are both extremely satisfying and a personal favourite.
Fantastic and accommodating service, and the food is prepared with passion and experience. You can really tell that both owners are incredibly passionate about the meals that they serve up.
Definitely Hampton's if not Melbourne's best authentic Japanese restaurant!
My favourite place for chirashi sushi. There are many different types of raw fish and seafood on top a bed of seasoned rice intertwined with seaweed and pickled mushrooms. Delicious. The gyu tan don was a generous serve and was flavourful and tender too. I haven’t had a bad dish from here and the staff are always friendly and polite.

The restaurant is very casual and cozy and the service was tentative (they left us to ourselves but came over at any indication we needed something) - really enjoyed the meal here. No fancy dishes here.. just your common Japanese dishes.
The sushi and sashimi was fresh.
Wasabi had a nice kick to it.
Gyoza was beautifully flavoured.
Beef tataki melted in your mouth (however the sauce was very standard).
Fried oysters were nice and cooked just right (although the batter a little thick).
Hubby and I had a nice date night and spent out time sitting at the bar. We had the pleasure of seeing the sushi chef deboning and filleting his whole fish.
This very casual, little Japanese restaurant serves authentic food. My wife lived in Japan for 3 years and found the food here excellent. The all Japanese staff are knowledgeable of the menu and the service is very good. The prices are very reasonable too. I would not hesitate to recommend this eatery.
One of my favourite go to place when I crave for Japanese sashimi, hobou (thinly cut sashimi - one kind of fish only) and nabe (hot pot).
Friendly service and fantastic food.
I recommend their sukiyaki - if you like beef, their yosenabe if you want a balance hot pot meal, and the shabu shabu if you want a relatively plainer hot pot.
The menu also caters for tendon, unagi don and other on rice basics. There is also a small variety of hand rolls and sushi at the counter is available.
Very cosy place to get many different Japanese delicacies the home cook way.
Authentic Japanese. The entrees we had we're spectacular but the mains were just ordinary. The gyoza & dipping sauce was amazing. Also loved the deep fried eggplant with miso sauce & chicken yakitori. However, the tempura udon was quite bland. We didn't try any sushi or sashimi but they sure looked good. Service was exceptional!
I have been coming here for years. It is really some of the best Japanese food you will find in the area. Staff are great and remember our favourite dishes and special dietary needs. The oysters are particularly good!
Went here for a quick lunch, and had one of their lunch special meals which came with a few different dishes, the main of which was a take on fish and chips that was excellent. Keen to go back for a dinner some time, but when trying on the off chance the lace is always already packed!
Found this little gem recently and had visited it twice in a week. Sushi were awesome with fresh raw fish and prawn. The tempura prawn and vegetables were well done and the dipping sauce wasn't too salty. The lemon chuhai has become our favourite drink.
One of the best sushi joints in the area! Sashimi very fresh! Melts in your mouth fresh! We had 2 drinks ordered the sushi sashimi boat ($44) which at first we thought was tight for the # of pieces. However the QUALITY of the sushi sashimi MORE than made up for it. Thinking about it makes me want to go back now!! We also ordered the Sama Fish. This was amazing. Grilled to perfection! Beware it can be a bit too fishy for the uninitiated. The surprise quality of the night was the the agedashi dofu! Best I've had in a long while. Decent amount of bonito flakes sprinkled on 4 cubes of perfectly cooked tofu .. lightly fried on the outside with soft centre tofu inside. This mixed in with a salty bonito broth!!!! OMG!
Jirochyi is a fantastic Japanese restaurant, serving very fresh sushi/sashimi and other traditional dishes. The service was prompt and friendly! I ate the mackerel sushi which was good but plain for a main dish (luckily I ordered a generous side of sautéed veggies!) and my girlfriend ate the salmon teriyaki which was phenomenal! Definitely recommend.
If I am ever craving raw fish and sashimi (which is often), Jirochyo is my to go restaurant. They serve one of the freshest sashimi that I have experienced in the Melbourne dining scene. If you go, I recommend ordering the sushi and sashimi boat! And order a large boat if you plan to share ;) Sometimes they receive special types of fresh fish for sashimi straight from Japan so I would definitely ask for their daily specials when heading in.
Owned and run by a delightful Japanese family, they certainly put their culture on the plate. If you want authentic Japanese fare, you must try Jirochyo. The sushi and sashimi platter was generous and the agedashi tofu took me back to my travels in Japan. Fantastic honest food
We've been here quite a few times and the food is very good. It is run by a Japanese couple who are very friendly and has fresh Japanese food. Sashimi was fresh and I like the Shabu Shabu. Great for a cold winter's night

This is such a lovely restaurant. The food is impeccable, and the staff are all very friendly, helpful, and honest.
I'm vegetarian, and I really had my heart set on having an entree for my main, so asked whether I should get two servings to make sure I'd enough to eat. I was told that I need not worry, as there would be more than enough. Just in case, and also because the sushi bar looked so amazing, I asked if I could get some customised sushi with avocado and cucumber. This wasn't a problem at all.
The vegetables I ordered were plentiful, and they were delicious. I really value their honesty, as other restaurants would probably try to make a larger sale by telling me to get two servings. The sushi was also amazing; if I had been sitting at the sushi bar, I wouldn't have even been able to go home. I'd highly recommend the green tea. I have never had such good tea; I think it had a touch of brown jasmine rice in it, and it was the perfect drink for a cold night after a long day.

Beautiful food. Dined there wednesday night, gyozas to die for, deliciously fresh and flavoursome. All food, sushimi so fresh, tatusa age was ok if a little oily. authentically japanese. service a little slow early but they got it together, but apart from that highly recommended

Fresh Sushi!. I love this sushi place! We got the sushi & sashimi platter which was presented in a long wooden boat that covered the whole table for 2 & it was amazing! It was fresh & fleshy which is what I like when eating sushi, We also ordered the Gyoza & the steak. Steak was not as great as I thought it would be but it was still nice. The seating is a bit cramped up but the food & service was amazing.

Sushi & sashimi boat great - super fresh Not a fan of the Teriyaki salmon. I prefer it more crispy rather than almost poached in the sauce & the mixed lettuce was overdressed with mayonnaise

Simple, but yum. We're pretty new to Japanese, so probably ordered the most Western dishes on the menu, but damn they were delicious! Friendly staff, great food, we shared a few dishes and they were all excellent. Great value too :-)

Reviewed again in June 18... still good quality and service has improved as it is not as regimented per staff member anymore. Tables are all cold SS which in winter is not inviting ( need to soften it with cloth or wood). I am happy to recommend!
Best sushi for this area.. The sushi taste much more better than Akiba.
Hidden Gem. My favorite little Japanese gem. Owned by the same family for many years serving consistent fare all the time. I did not come here for about 3 years as I moved to the West and when I returned the lady owner remembered my name and the Sushi Chef hubby remembered my order from all those years ago... Now thats service....
Tasty and Fancy. If I want a nice Japanese restaurant with good quality food, I come here. I am a repeat customer and find the flavours authentic and clean.
Great quality Japanese food! The food is always fresh and presented beautifully. The Sukiyaki here is 10 times better than any other I have tried, It comes in a big sharing pot with very generous servings! The staff are always lovely and cheerful. I would recommend booking a table if you are going on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night as they get very busy.

Best Japanese in Hampton. Consistently good food and always packed with diners. Make sure you book! Sushi/sashimi is great and you can watch it being prepared by the sushi chef. Hot dishes also delicious especially nasu dengaku, tempura (no soggy batter!) and sukiyaki. Service is good when the older lady is around otherwise it can be a bit hit and miss.
My favourite Japanese. Consistently great food, sushi on the spot, crisp non-greasy tempura and very friendly staff. The combo sushi/ sashimi for 2 in the 'boat' is a winner and I always share with my son who just loves it. Highly recommended.
Lovely staff. I recommend the beef tataki and gyoza and one of the sushi/ sashimi mains to share. Food is delicious, and the staff are absolutely lovely!
A reliable choice. We are regular diners at Jirochyo, this place is always very busy, which is a testament to its popularity in an area starved with diversity. The sashimi is always fresh - not the most amazing I have ever tasted, but far better quality than average. The menu is quite standard, however, they do have some less common choices such as sukiyaki cooked at the table. (Tip: Careful not to let the wait staff overcook the meat!) Ask to see the specials and sake menu, which they don't offer unless you ask. It includes extras such as edamame, and a good selection of quality cold sakes. The salads are delicious, and I recommend their Agedashi Dofu - they do a very nice version. While prices are higher than average, they do give you a free 'amuse bouche' of noodles, and a serve of fresh orange wedges to end your meal. Overall, recommended!

Uni wasn't the very best as there was a bitter taste to it.
Udon was superb, along with its tempura. The soup was a little salty though.
Tonkatsu was a little dry. The meat was dry and not tender. Very difficult to chew.
Gyoza was good though although the dipping sauce did not have any flavors to it therefore, that was a disappointment.
Nice cosy neighborhood Japanese Restaurant. Really fresh sushi and sashimi. Great service. Reasonably priced but portion maybe a bit small. Enjoyed the experience.

Good family run place, fresh seafood and sushi.y chicken and egg dish however lacked the umami favour but the pork and sushi bowls were good.

Great authentic Japanese food. Owned and run by a Japanese family. One of the best sushi platters served with a variety of fish vs the many Japanese resturant that serve only tuna and salmon. Great hot dishes if you don't like the raw food. Just try it.
Sad to hear the owners are retiring after many years in Hampton. We've really enjoyed their food.
We've been going for years and always love it. We have been keeping the Thursday night tradition going by ordering take away. And if you're going to do take away, this is the way to do it. Just beautiful honest food by folks who love what they do and are proud of it. If you haven't tried Jirochyo yet, do yourself a favour.
