Review Viet Star - Hawthorn

Juan Carlos Elichirigoity
Visited VietStar years ago and immediately became a regular place to go anytime I crave for healthy yummy Asian food. Very good prices, good and fast and familiar service. My favourite: the satay chicken main ❤️
AJ
We came in for pho and their beef and chicken pho did not disappoint. Large generous portion and cheap prices. If anything there was too much meat and we couldnt finish it!
Devan Dhora
Quick service for takeaway. The combination fried rice was mediocre at best. Saying that, would like to go back and try other dishes in the restaurant, perhaps a better experience in store 🤞🏼

Very poor standard of food for our whole meal. Chicken sate were tough dry and unpleasant t.o the mouth. Sizzling Mongolian beef arrived with no sizzle on the plate. No serving spoons to use as we were sharing. Salt and pepper squid the squid was tender. Too many other food options I the area and will not be back.

Hi 👋 Just missing your lovely food, prawn spring rolls Yum 🤤 Grilled Chicken Vermicelli salad, Salt and pepper squid 🦑, to die for. And the Phò BEST Vietnamese in Australia See you in Melbourne soon 💗

Just got takeaway from them. Got the Mongolian beef and rice. After picking it up went to eat it at uni and was ok. About 15 minutes later felt very ill and had pain in my stomach and throat. Vomited up all the rice and now have food poisoning! From rice!! Not good.

Big portion of Vietnamese local dishes. Tried the Broken Rice of Pork Chop and shredded pork. Tasted quite okay, albeit not as tasty as the other places. The Spring roll vermicelli was not too bad either. Quite value for money for $12 each. Place is comfortable. Service was so so.

Poor customer service, ginger fish fillet, sizzling beef and eggnoodles with seafood all tasted v bland, duck meat in san Choi bao tasted a bit old or maybe reheated a few times, food weren’t as good as what we expected from dining exp from any other viet food restaurants tho the price range are quite comparable, Have a try here but I am quite sure you probs won’t come back even here again :(

Best prawn spring rolls!

I have been coming here for years. It's still my favourite Vietnamese in the inner east. Great service and great food. The Pho is my favourite. I also enjoy their Vietnamese ice coffees.

A green bug in the pho. Disgusting.

Excellent value authentic Vietnamese cuisine in Hawthorn. Recommended are the fried chicken ribs, calamari, vegetable and tofu hot pot, beef and broccoli rice noodles, fried rice, special spring rolls and dry fried beef noodles. 3 colors drinks consistently sweet way to end the meal. Service is prompt. Never disappoints - owner Pham is always friendly. Lunch menu represents good value.

We tried the following

Egg Noodle Soup With Stew Duck
Cost $14 (Expensive)
The duck is quite soft and falls off the bone quite easily, the soup has good flavour and taste, the noodles go well with the soup and duck, however, it is not authentic, they add too much unnecessary vegetables such as onions (we suspect to cut down on costs). It is ok, but not the best, the soup is also quite diluted and not as flavourful as other places we have been to in Melbourne. A few times (more than 3 times) they have given us the wrong noodle as well, i would say this falls more under the staff lacking some attention to detail, just double check your order to save you hassle

Vegetarian Spring Rolls (8)
Cost: $9.50 (Expensive)
The spring rolls are quite tasteless on their own, and the ingredients used are quite cheap, the fish sauce also lacks citrus and garlic, it is not an authentic vegetarian spring roll. We also bit on something hard (plastic) that chipped my partners mouth on one of the rolls. I would definitely not go back to this place, because they do not have enough standards and attention to detail. Just be careful when you come here.

We love Vietnamese food, however this will not be the place for us in future and we would not go back here after we gave this place many chances.

Ample seating, quick and efficient service. Wide variety of dishes during lunch hour, most options are $12 and it's not just the usual Vietnamese fare either - there's a chunk of generic Asian fare (Mongolian beef, Singapore noodles, black bean sauce) that will settle the undecided palates of diners who prefer safe options. (Only with rice, and excludes duck, seafood dishes.)

Food isn't anything to lose sleep over, is decently flavoured. I've had the broken rice before, and like the hue it's good enough, but not mindblowing. Good option if you're out with people who like Asian food but aren't experimental enough to try stronger flavours.

I’ve been here twice and it’s been hit and miss. Enjoyed the duck with plum sauce with steamed rice. Second time we tried fried crispy quail and it wasn’ t very tasty and portion size was small. The redeeming part is that every time I go there it’s quite a nice dining experience. Staff are friendly. Can always get a table. Not too noisy. We took along a four year old and they were happy to accomodate her fussy needs. Wheelchair friendly. Reasonable parking out the front. Takeaway available. If you have dietaries just let the staff know and they’ll endeavour to accommodate.

Another hot night so I didn't feel like cooking so my partner and I ordered some home delivery.

This time we ordered some Vietnamese and not eating to eat too much we only ordered one dish each.

We shared some vegetarian fried rice which was ok, but it tasted burnt and not that palatable to me.

But the serving size was big and the t/a container packed to the brim.

We also had some satay chicken w vegetables which was alright. The satay wasn't too thick, more of a watery sauce.

The flavour was ok and the container was packed to the brim.

The chicken was unusual in texture, almost rubbery.

Overall this was an average dinner.

VeganeatsM Vegetarian Food Lover Aman Saraf

Staff didn’t seem to care, on arrival- was left standing at the front of the restaurant whilst one staff member just looked at me and walked past. Ended up finding my own seat.

Meat in beef pho was really tough, the brisket also had stringy parts dangling off for some reason.

The only plus was good portions. Otherwise try something else on Glenferrie rd.

A place I always come back to when I’m craving some good Vietnamese food. Their pancakes, Pho and Bun bo hue great. One of the busier Asian restaurants on this strip. Service is friendly as well!
LC
This place when it’s busy can be super squishy so be sure to get there early or book. Food here is not too bad size of the meals are reasonable. Service here is good, staff are friendly and smile which we appreciate! Will be back

My family being Vietnamese, I am quite fussy and picky when it comes to Viet restaurants and food, this is quite a nice restaurant, one of the better ones outside of Richmond and Springvale! Would recommend for people looking for somewhat authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Clean restaurant and service is super fast. I have been back multiple times

Food is very delicious, tasty and fresh. It's suiable for every season and every time in day. Especially it's not costly and fast and good services ❤️
Sushi_Monster
I ordered combination fried rice and the grilled + shredded pork on broken rice dish for lunch. 5/5 for the grilled pork. It was so flavourful. The friedrice was good enough and the tables had chilli on the side which added to the flavour.
The place was nice, not too crowded at anout 3pm.
The pork spring rolls are the best in Melbourne. Have tried lots of things on the menu and have never been disappointed. Very quick service and great value for money. Well worth stopping in.
Regular customer to Viet star. Quality is also higly recommended. The staffs they are very friendly. They are normally helpful when you have a problem in choosing the menu.
Consistently tasty Vietnamese food. Quick service, great portions and importantly delicious.

nice and busy place in hawthorn for vietnamese/chinese food. of particular highlight was the fried rice which was tasty and smoky and the fried flounder which was very tasty. We also had the spring rolls and sauteed veges which were nice also. Restaurant is quite small so may be a little hard to come with a big party here.
Hân Trịnh
Love the Vietnamese broken rice with bbq pork here! So good and authentic! They have the best Vietnamese coffee with milk in Melb with only 4$. The service was friendly too. I wouldn't recommend their "hu tiu nam vang" (pork noodle soup), it tastes so weird and they used chinese red pork (char siu) instead of Vietnamese boiled pork. This noodle soup was disappointing. Anyway, I would come back for their broken rice and VN coffee.
Mini Mooi
Friendly staff and fast service. We had beef salad, fried chicken wings, chinese broccoli, prawn rice paper roll, beef stir fried and spring onion. All the meal was good but I prefer more flavour on rice paper roll sauce.
Sol_n_chai
I was delighted with the service and quality of food at this restaurant. We had the beef and black bean (tastes really quality) and the vegetable noodles. Very delicious! Thank you!

Thought I'd try this Vietnamese restaurant I hadn't been to this Monday. The average rating is 4.1 as of this review so I had pretty decent expectations. I got the usual staple thing I first try - rare beef egg noodle pho with more/extra vegetables and less noodles.

The broth was quite good because it seemed to have slightly less sodium than other pho broths I've had on average. As most know the biggest weakness of pho is the sodium, next would be the amount of carbs from regular noodles which is why I always ask for less noodles and may not eat all the noodles. Overall a relatively healthy dish. Although right now I'm feeling all the after effects of all the salt and msg.

The beef was a little bit of a let down as they were quite rough. All came out to $14. Would rate a little higher but the waiter was quite impatient and another who was to take the payment seemed quite grumpy and literally said nothing but the price even after I thanked them for the meal.

As we're a regular in Glenferrie, the next main town over from the house, we have a couple favourites though still like to try new places now and then. Today needing a good coffee we checked out 'Viet Star' the only Vietnamese place in town. A lovely day say us seated outside, especially on the rare occasion that there are no smokers - they've ruinned going outside.

Was craving some Pho and was lazy to drive all the way to Springvale, so went looking around for an alternative that's closer to Armadale and found this place. Love the ambience in the restaurant and the friendly service stuff is definitely a plus to the place.

Was surprised at the variety of dishes that they have in their menu and had a pretty difficult time choosing what I would like to try first to be honest. Upon reading some of the reviews here, I ended up getting their Beef in Vine Leaf, Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Sliced Pork and Pho with sliced beef and beef balls for myself and the missus.

10 minutes in, and all 3 dishes came at the same time and after our first mouth of the respective dishes, we're in food heaven. It was truly yummy and tasty. Love the balance of flavours in each dish. The meat in the dish was also moist, well cooked and nicely flavoured.

Overall, the missus and I agree that we were in food heaven and we will definitely be back for more.

My go to place for pho. Can’t say much about the other food because I always get beef pho and some prawn spring rolls every now and again, but it is always great. Staff are very friendly and service is very fast. Absolutely love it.
Marie
Food here is fantastic. I'm a regular at least once a week. Good quality and cheap eats. Garlic Beef, Spring roll noodle salad and prawn wonton noodle soup are the best!
Vivian
As good as any Vietnamese restaurant that is in Richmond Springvale Footscray etc . I really enjoyed the Bun Bo Hue here and also the Pho. The soups do not have any traditional offals that come with the soups which for me did make the meal less enjoyable but nevertheless the soups were flavour some
Carmel
Really like the food here. It is very fresh and tasty. But on this occasion I brought a friend here for the first time. After our meal was finished, the host practically pulled our seats out from under us and ushered us out in such a hurry. So incredibly rude that I still can’t fathom what just happened. Sadly, won’t be returning.
Lisa Giles
This place is always packed every night of the week. It’s super cheap, and very tasty. Their normal spring rolls are delicious, along with their special Hanoi spring rolls. Also really enjoyed the chicken satay skewers. The Bun is a classic, but my only criticism is that there was a lot of vermicelli and not much pork/salad compared to others I’ve had. Good value for what you pay for.

I and my friend just had dinner at Viet Star last night.
Ambiance-wise the restaurant feels like a place you can find in Vietnam - simple setting that maximizes the space, which leaves not so much privacy between tables. The place was crowded and that is always a good sign. Our waiter was polite, quick and knows his job.
We had rice paper roll with prawn and pork for entree, broken rice with spare ribs for me, Cambodian rice noodles soup (Hủ tiếu Nam Vang) for my friend, and beef in vine leaves for sharing. The rolls were served really quick with peanut sauce. A bit lacking in flavor, maybe should have pineapple for freshness and a little tanginess, just my own preference. My plate of broken rice was big and very filling. My friend who had eaten more plates of broken rice than her own age suggested that the nuoc mam needs improvement, but I’m not picky about broken rice and was very content. Her noodle soup was delicious - slightly chewy noodles in fragrant and flavorful broth (a bit salty to my taste). Some toppings are questionable but all in all the it’s pretty authentic and tastes exactly like something we can find in HCMC.
The star of the dinner, however, was the beef in vine leaves. You have to try it. It’s not a Vietnamese dish often recreated in restaurants overseas. I will go back for their rice vermicelli with beef in vine leaves for sure!
They serve water for free but you have to ask for it. And after your meal is finished staff will immediately approach and quickly clear the table which makes you feel pressured to leave. Which is why I gave the place a 4*, because the food didn’t fault me. My first experience with Vietnamese food in Melbourne was surprisingly very pleasant, and I will be back.

EDIT: (this is already a very long comment, but I just have to). We went back to Viet Star today for dinner. Even on a weekday the business is crowded! True to my words, I had beef in vine leaves with rice vermicelli, dried Cambodian rice noodles for my friend and rice paper rolls. We were famished after classes, and left too full to eat anything else. However today’s dishes were a bit off. The beef in vine leaves tasted as good as the first time, but quite oily and the exceeding oil soaked into noodles, which I didn’t like. There’s A LOT OF rice vermicelli, so it’s a bit off balance, still worth every penny for it’s massive portion. Dried rice noodles doesn’t taste like any bowl of hủ tiếu I have tried before. It’s like a totally new invented flavor, tasty nevertheless. Maybe next time I’ll go back for take away so we can share lol. Also want to give a shoutout to the waitress who collected the phone that I forgot there, and promptly returned it to me when I finally realized quite a while later. Thank you Viet Star, you will see me often ;)

It took a long time to be served, a table that came in after us was served before. Waiters were unsure of what food they were serving. Squid was over cooked and rubbery and lettuce offcuts were served on the plate. Will not be coming back.
Aly Brack
Amazing food once ordered. Had to request water :/ generally pretty attentive staff but once finished felt a little pressured to pack up and leave quickly.

My favourite thing to order when I'm having Vietnamese is the Beef in Vine leaves, and I've been to so many Vietnamese restaurants and for some reason they don't have that, but Viet Star does!!! They do it so well, it's perfect every time. The noodles and vegetables are fresh, and the warm succulent beef wrapped in charred vine leaves is just so great. Service was efficient, and my food took only 10 minutes after I ordered. Loved this place!

I visited Viet Star on a Thursday night with a friend. It was already busy but we were luckily seated straight away. There is so much variety in their menu and also plenty of vegetarian options. We ordered the Hanoi spring rolls to share (which you wrap in lettuce). It was fresh and crunchy, a great starter. For the main, I opted for the broken rice with shredded pork and grilled pork rib and fried egg. The grilled pork and shredded pork was simply delicious. It’s a decent serving size so bear in mind if you get big eyes when you’re ordering. I found Viet Star value for your money. Will definitely come back again!
Pho Sure
Good quality ingredients, good noodle texture. Nice tasting soup. Will go again when I’m in the area. I felt the coffee was a bit expensive though.
Jean
really good Vietnamese restaurant on par with the Box Hill institutions Indochine and Tien Dat. The make really good pho here and staff are friendly too.

We chose this place because it was so busy and we were right. The service was excellent. Food was fresh and served quickly. We had Mongolian beef which was delicious. Beef was good quality. Typical bustling Vietnamese style restaurant with good food and service.

Best place for a quick lunch for Swinburne students. The food come out with big portion, tasty with a cheap price. The broken rice is good with the hot grilled pork, amazing when serving with the fish sauce. Fried rice is good as well.
Ferry Gondo
Big portion of Vietnamese local dishes. Tried the Broken Rice of Pork Chop and shredded pork. Tasted quite okay, albeit not as tasty as the other places. The Spring roll vermicelli was not too bad either. Quite value for money for $12 each. Place is comfortable. Service was so so.
Miley
The food here is absolutely over the moon!!!! Especially the sizzling Mongolian beef and the beef in vine leaf. Yesterday was the first time I've been there and for sure I will come back. Much better than any Vietnamese restaurant at Richmond, Springvale and even St.Albans.
Jaydaysss
Love coming here to satisfy my cravings for pho. The food is decently priced and and portions are huge (as usual). The service is quick and it's not too hard to get a table for 2. But so far over the many times I've been the service has been hit and miss, staff have been quite curt at times but I guess that's because things get really busy. Can't wait to come again!

Fantastic restaurant that has a lot of tables inside. The staff are all quite friendly and try and seat you as quickly as they can.
The service is fantastic and you get your food quite quickly after ordering it.

The food tastes fresh and has some fantastic flavours.
The satay chicken is amazing and is always what I order when I go there.

The pricing is quite reasonable and most likely a lot cheaper than other places along Glenferrie road

Always a great service and quality of Vietnamese food!
It is my place to go in hawthorn if you are ever feeling peckish, or hungry and have cravings for Vietnamese food. Food is prepared fresh, and the ambiance is lively, customer service is good, and it's Always busy! So you know the place is good!! I always come back for more
Maddie Kingham
Came here for a quick dinner with a friend. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was good. We ordered the San Choi Bao, the Sizzling Mongolian Beef and some prawn crackers and rice. The San Choi Bao was tasty but very oily, we really enjoyed the Sizzling Mongolian Beef though. Price is definitely reasonable - although $4 for Prawn Crackers seemed a little steep.
Britt Jeffs
Delicious pho in a very casual and laid back setting. This is a great place for a convenient midweek bite between friends. The broth of the pho was perfect although the meat could have been of slightly better quality. The pork spring rolls and prawn rice paper rolls were satisfactory.
Sylvia's POV
The service is consistently good; always prompt.
The pricing is cheap with reasonable servings to pair with.
The food is merely slightly above average.
Dylan Crupi
Great quality food at a good price, and lots of it, has takeaway so if you can't finish it you can take it home for later. A broad range of dishes with daily specials.
Nick X Thomson
Great food and very hospitable and friendly service. Decent prices too. Short wait time on the meals despite the volume of people in the restaurant.
Peanut Butter Cup
Perfect place for cheap yet tasty asian eats. The service was very good and the place was nicely decorated and clean. The pork was SO delicious, really tender and flavoursome. Dumplings and vegetables on par with most other cheap asian places. Would definitely come back though!
Dirk
This place would trump nearly all Footscray & Richmond Vietnamese restaurants! Cheap and consistently good. Pho; broken rice and pork chop; one couldn't make dinner for what they charge. Also a usual haunt for Uni students.
Molipus
Always a safe place to get food, never let me down. I always go once a week and always get something different, quick service and good portions
Bagelhutzy
Quick, fresh Vietnamese cuisine! The place is always well staffed and the service has always been efficient and speedy not to mention smiley and pleasant! There's a really extensive range on the menu! The rice paper rolls are always a win and with 4 for $9 you can't go wrong! The restaurant itself is very basic and nothing special so I'd opt for take away! Will definitely be ordering from them again!

What a beautiful dish! I ordered many lovely dishes with my friends. amazing time! We really enjoy these delicious foods. I will come here again to try another wonderful dishes!
Happytalent.66
A very popular Vietnamese restaurant in the area. We came a Thursday night and it was luckily not fully booked. Everything is fairly priced with good size. We had soft shell crab with was fired nicely with chilli. The lemon grass pork is greatly flavoured. The only negative thing is , we ordered drink no ice but they still put ice in.
Rachel Jade
Coming here for a quick and cheap meal is a must do - the Vietnamese food is delicious, comes in generous servings and the service is efficient. The turnover time is hence also fast, so don't worry too much about the crowds!

I love the Vietnamese pancake - so many interesting flavours and textures
Nean
You can't fault the service here, they were extremely efficient and obliging. And smiled! The rare beef salad is a definite winner. And it's not really an entree, it's huge. With rice it would be sufficient for one, if not 2. Hubby wants to recreate it for Xmas- that's how much we liked it. Also had pho, bun Bo hue, lemongrass chicken and grilled chicken with tomato rice. We took 2 containers of leftover home. There were 5 of us. Only downside is it can get quite noisy, as it was packed on Saturday night. Nice casual night out.
Vivi Wulansari
This place was my all time favourite when was living in the area! Visited again yesterday for a take away and the food is still as delicious as it was!! Very well priced too. Cambodian rice noodle is my fave!
Steph A
Great food and great price. We came here as a group and it was great, the staff were extremely efficient and tentative. The food was good and for the price even better.
Justine
The pork spring rolls are the best I've had at a Viet restaurant in Melbourne as they are a decent size and not all pastry, there's room inside for actual meat! Had pork, ginger, lemongrass with veg and the boyfriend picked sweet n sour chicken much to my foodie disgust (how Aussie), but both were tasty. I'd definitely go back. Not sure how much MSG they use, but is it coincidental that I rarely eat Chinese/Viet food and the very same night I eat it I get the craziest scary dreams and extreme moods the next day, I woke up crying and exhausted from the horrible dreams and in a foul mood all day! I've since read online about others experiencing crazy MSG nightmares. Interesting to see if it happens next time I go there!

First restaurant visit for me while in Melbourne ... Got address by my colleague. Yes it was Nice Place and really Authentic vietnami flavour. But being an indian need little Salt and Pepper.

I order Fried rice with Prawn and it really worth for the $ i paid.
Mostly Asian
Scatty, unhelpful staff. We were barely recognised and pho accompaniments and cutlery were tossed across our table at us.
The tofu and mushrooms I'm the stir fry were gelatinous, and soggy.
The tomato rice and "grilled" (fried) chicken was lacklustre and needed copious amounts of sauce for flavour.
My spicy beef pho was tepid, oily, not at all spicy and there was more fat on the beef strips than meat. The other meaty aspect seemed to be luncheon style something or other.
So all in all, rude and helpful staff combined with their cold and bland dishes leaves this restaurant on my Never Again list.
Unless of course you like bland
Jianierrrrrr
I always like trying Vietnamese food since its light, sweet, sour and with lots of herb flavors.
During a normal lunch time, we ended up at Viet Star for quick and easy lunch. The waiter was not very friendly and didn't smile at all. But the service was quick! I mean really quick, the food came out in seconds! And they were all delicious!
#boneless chicken wing-stuffed with traditional Vietnamese meat, vegetable and glass noodle. Crispy chicken skin with yummy stuffing and tender chicken meat+sweet chili sauce, just really enjoyable!
#special broken rice-nice plate of everything, includes one piece marinated pork chop, pickled carrot, one egg, vegetables, glass noodle and one piece of Vietnamese meatloaf. Everything was separated, but felt like together... I really love the glass noodle, tasty savory but flavorful. The pork chop was too thick and didn't marinated long enough to soak the flavor into the meat. The meatloaf was similar with the stuffing inside the chicken wing, lots of godness and so yummy! Have to say, simple is the best.
#combination beef pho-big bowl of noodle soup, typical dish that I loved to order in Vietnamese restaurant. The soup was really clear but full of herb and yummy flavors. The sliced beef meat was tender. Such a nice bowl of light but tasty noodle soup with lots of beef meats. After finished it, you won't felt thirsty at all, that means they didn't put extra stuff in the soup.
Overall, I had a nice, fullfilling lunch at Viet Star, also the price was great too! My money was well paid for the meal, will definitely go again.
CLABEL
Recommended by my friend to try this place. It turned out to be good actually. The restaurant was the most packed in the area when I was there. They have a wide range of menu selection that you can choose from. The portion size is big and it taste pretty good.

The pho broth was good, warm and a bit sweet. The rice vermicelli salad with grilled chicken was also tasty. They gave a great amount of vermicelli under the chicken and veggies. The rice dishes looks pretty good as well with a huge pile of rice on the side. Each dish is only $11 which is very affordable.
PW Lou
After last week's bad experience of food on Glenferrie road, I asked an ex work colleague for recommendation of good and a cheap restaurant. Boy - was she spot on!

I ordered the broken rice with pork chops, egg paste, egg and shredded pork. I have no idea how they charge only 11 bucks but it's pretty good value for money. I suspect this is true as there were a few students around which is always a good indicator.

I think I just found my local Vietnamese restaurant!
Hello World!
Viet Star provides authentic Vietnamese food to Glenferrie Rd food street! We ordered stuffed chicken wing, broken rice with a lot and Pho. The pho soup was very delicious! The broken rice was filled with all sorts of Vietnamese snacks and pork chop. The chicken wing was very unique! It is one of the good Asian restaurants on the street!
Jimbo
We were in the area and thought we gave this place a try as the reviews were generally positive. It was 3/4 full during lunchtime on Saturday. Our food came out pretty quick and the servings were extremely generous. Beef diced cube rice was nice but a little chewy. Hainanese chicken rice was good but a little too dry. Broken rice with spareribs was very nice. Prawn spring rolls were yummy. Satisfactory in both quantity and quality. Pretty good overall and will be back again to try the Pho noodles.
Vinup
Had best spring rolls. Their fish with lemongrass and chilli is a must have. Prices are pretty reasonable for the quality they offer. Loved this place.
Muncher
I came here with high expectations given the restaurant's high rating. I was definitely disappointed. Ordered a noodle dish which was flavourless and bland. Szechuan beef was ok...
Aparna Attawar
Fantastic food at this joint, we got the rice vermicelli with spring rolls, sizzling seafood with ginger, and salt and pepper squid, all of which was delicious. Vietnamese food is supposed to be fresh and that's exactly what the quality of food was here. The service was prompt, the food came out really quickly even though it seemed really busy. Will definitely be back here for the scrumptious rice vermicelli bowl with the crispy spring rolls topped with peanuts, yum!
Clara
One of best Vietnamese restaurant I've tried. So in love with the food here. The service was really good and super fast. Got to come back for other dishes.
Tessa Peach
Reassuringly standard Vietnamese restaurant... Clean, well-presented, with a very extensive menu offering a wide selection of Vietnamese/Chinese based dishes. My mum and I had dinner here on a Wednesday night - started with sesame prawn toasts which is never had before but we're very yummy and crispy with soft inside (see photo). I had chili chicken for main and mum had ginger lemongrass beef. The chicken and mixed veggies were fresh and tasty, but the chili sauce was more sweet chilly and maybe too thick and gelatins. I tried some of the beef and preferred that - would prefer it for myself next time, I guess you live and learn. VERY cheap spirits, would recommend!! Wine list is pleasing, and service friendly but not over the top. Nice work :)
Jennifer Nguyen
Vietstar is really nothing special but it has good traditional Vietnamese food that never disappoints. The honey chicken and satay pork is delicious but that's all I really enjoyed. You will always leave this place satisfied with your meal.
Duong.vu.louis
Many different types of delicious foods. Especially the service is quick and nice.

The spring rolls are the best. In addition u may wanna try the duck stuffed prawns which is a very unique dish.
Kenny
So good!

This place is always busy and the service and food is always fantastic. They have a $11 special for lunch which is great value. We come here a lot and is by far my favourite Vietnamese restaurant . Definitely recommend Viet star.
Amy
Great flavour and the Buns are really good value for money. The San Choi Bao is the best I've ever had. Really fast service as well. Only negative is the pork is sometimes a bit fatty and not the best quality but it wouldn't deter me from eating there again.
Amit Tuteja
Very enjoyable meal. Tried the specials of Duck San chai buao, grilled beef, chilli pork and chicken fried rice.
Everything was yummy, but the grilled beef was the standout dish. Maybe they could add q too ch more chilli and a bit more pork to the chilli pork.
Clean toilets and acceptable service.

Had lunch on Saturday. I had a Vietnamese pancake. Ingredients were fresh, and I enjoyed it, however it became a bit oily in the end.

My husband ordered a beef pho. It was better than average. He prefer a hotter broth.

Service was quick.

Came here to find this place packed! Service was surprisingly quick and enjoyed the nicest fried wontons here I have ever had, with large portions of juicey meat inside. The Mongolian lamb and rice was the perfect amount of spice overall really enjoying our meal today. However space is cramped and noisy, come here for the food but don't be surprised if you get bumped or can't hear the person accross for you.

Yum yum. Stumbled upon this when Samurai down the road was unexpectedly closed on a public holiday... Great food. Huge portions and a cheap price. Definitely a must go for students on a budget. Most dishes with rice or noodles is $11. The portions are so big that if you weren't really hungry you'd be taking the left overs for lunch the next day. Minis half a point because staff weren't as friendly as I'd like them to be and I was quite intimidated by the waitress.... Wouldn't hurt to smile more.

As good as Vietnamese can get. I had rice paper rolls before my pho which was a bad idea cos they filled me up pretty fast, but pho was still amazing. My friend got something else equally as huge and unable to finish. Definitely would return

We ate here many times and ALWAYS the food is amazing. Try fried dimsims.... heaven!!! Vietnamese dishes are served in very genuine way. Good service, polite but never smiling- the Vietnamese way. I don't mind

Consistently excellent food. This is my go to Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne. The food is always super fresh and the service is extremely quick. The Vietnamese coleslaw salad is a staple of my diet - fresh, light and just the right amount of chilli.

Went there with my friend twice, food was nice, it's BYO and the vegie fried rice actually comes with lots of vegies and tofu as well. However, the service was bad on both occasions. Since I'm Asian, and my friend's Caucasian, the head waiter gave us different cutlery! I had to ask for a fork later... And the waiting staff rarely have smiles on their faces.

The food here is excellent. I have been eating here for years and years and years and am always happy. I especially like the Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Chicken. They have the best spring rolls in Melbourne. They are always open and mainly busy at peak times. If you want quiet, go in for an early or late meal. The staff are very stern faced, but they get the job done expertly. I am just about to pop in there now and I'm drooling already.

Not the friendliest service but had the best chicken pho I've tried amazing flavour for a quick dinner one night, might come back to try more

Quick service, cheap, and yummy food with big portions. What can possibly go wrong with that? Well, sometimes you feel like you're being rushed.... That's about it.

It's not the greatest bun I've had it my life but it's a great in-between uni class snack. It's super affordable and does taste ok however, it could taste a lot better with additional flavour like chilli, extra greens and use of mint/coriander!

Excellent pho, very interesting setting. Friendly staff and good service adds to the experience. Rice dishes as a whole needs some work tho.

Decent Vietnamese restaurant in Hawthorn. We love - broken rice with pork, fried prawn spring rolls, vermicelli salad with pork, stir fry veges. Beef pho was alright but can be too salty, tasted better ones.

Food was good but terrible service. Two male waiters didn't even say "Thank you " to their customers. Forget about customer service. I was disappointed.

Amazing prices for lunch... Any dish with rice for $10 ... Quiet so can guarantee table... Obviously no one has realised how awesome it is. I had chicken lemongrass and chilli ... Was great! Will be coming back here weekly!

Had the staff leave the door open and start to sweep and mop under my chair while I was eating (had only just received my food). Less than impressed at the lack of hospitality and rude staff. They clearly didn't want customers there so I won't be back.

Never lets me down for my Viet fix. And I mean never. Great food, great service, great value, great ambience. The only Viet go to place in hawthorn period.

Always reliable! I've been here many times over many years and the food has always been of good quality. Although the phos may not taste as authentic as some other places, at their prices, they're certainly nothing to complain about. However, the Vietnamese spring rolls dry and the skin is often chewy like it's been refrigerated for a while. Not sure whether it was a one off but would not try them again.

Amaziiiiing food always! Reasonably priced, quick service . Mongolian beef is highly recommended. Only thing I would add is more professional service.
Is a local and always a happy returning customer

Our favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Hawthorn, I strongly recommend their Vietnamese Coleslaw, Beef Vine Leave and Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork. Their "Chinese" Vietnamese dishes are a bit bland. But if you order something more "Vietnamese" you will get satisfied!

Awful experience, we went out for a casual Wednesday night dinner. The restaurant was packed but we got a table upstairs which was nice. We ordered pho, satay chicken and Tomato rice with crispy chicken. The pho was nice not as flavourful as other restaurants in hawthorn and Richmond but nice that's until I found a long hair in my pho which put me off, the staff replaced my pho with a fresh one but I had lost my appetite. My sons tomato rice with crispy chicken was bland. The satay chicken was the best dish but lacked flavour overall a disappointing experience.
