Staff were super friendly & accommodating. both in an indoor/outdoor setting! The dishes we picked was delicious and well presented! I highly recommend getting their tacos 🌮 its full of flavour . Also they had the edible coffee take cup which is awesome! What we ordered: 🍄 Mushroom Medley 🍳 Eggs Benedict 🌮 Grilled Prawn Taco 🍓 Berry Bliss Smoothie 🍵 Matcha Latte ☕️ Cappucino in Good Edi cup

The staff were super friendly and helpful. Our meals came out quickly. Nice coffee and delicious food, had the seafood linguine which is great and tasty, highly recommended and will come back again! Friendly staff, nice street view. Relax environment. Deserve visit :)

The cosy cafe had a nice fit out which was comfortable and calming, the team that greeted and served us were welcoming and friendly and the menu was extensive! We popped in before work on this cold day so all we wanted was a beautiful bowl of porridge and this one did not disappoint, need to try the other delicious sounding dishes too! The coffee was also really nice, the beans had a nice nutty texture to them! All around a great way to start the day! We both had: 1. Porridge (rolled oats cooked with milk and served with home made granola, seasonal fresh fruits and honey) 2. Skim Latte <invite>

Long time no brunch ! This cute brunch place just meet my expectations. I ordered the middle eastern egg and the smashed avocado. The display and pastry were also good and delicious.

This place has a relaxed, casual vibe. And they have the best Benedict in Melbourne 💕Whenever you go to there it is clean and various decorations are always thoughtfully arranged in different places. Nonetheless, the service there is really excellent.

great food and great service! this place was bustling when i visited! it was jam packed inside but thankfully the weather was good and they offer plentiful seating outside too! they got a good range of brunch dishes with some cocktails to keep life interesting! i hiiighly recommend the baileys hot choc!!! but definitely get pouring asap before it cools down too much (especially in this winter weather hehe) i didnt have any issues with parking but do note that street parking has time limits on them! dont get caught! oh! and it is a dog friendly cafe! if you are here for a quick coffee pick up, they also provide a leash holding area outside for you to tie the leash to!

Cute cafe very close to Auburn train station serving both brunch staples and unique dishes. We tried 2 of the winter dishes: Shakshuka and Veggie Linguine with Prawns. Both were very hearty and tasty. Friendly staff and cosy interiors. Great outdoor seating in front of an eye catching mural!

Food here was brilliant! 💯 We loved every single dish that we ordered. These dishes were soo colourful and had tonnes of fruits and veggies. 🌽 I love the tangy and spice kick to the squid ink pasta, the creamy dish from the Benedict and the sauce combination of the tacos 😋 I HIGHLY RECOMMEND visiting @hellosailorcafehawthorn and don’t forget to use @memberbuy ‘MPAY’ newest feature to earn CREDITS from your meal ✨💰

I love this place! SO glad it is back in action. The people are so lovely, friendly and unpretentious. The menu is small but perfect, and the dishes are beautifully executed and presented.

I popped in for the first time this morning for a T/A coffee. Couldn't resist the savoury muffins so got one for lunch. Well, it's now 10.45am & I have no lunch left! A little taste turned in to many because the muffin was so delicious! Seriously the best savoury muffin I've ever had! Coffee was great too. I'll be back. Thank-you!
Darren Cronshaw
Our favourite closest to home cafe, 5 stars especially for the home-made muffins and artful/delicious coffee

Glad to see this cafe open and run off its feet again. The coffee and breakfast menu are both great, but I will say that they could be quicker in clearing dirty plates off tables. Hello Sailor, it's so nice to have you back where you belong!

Great friendly staff, dog friendly, wonderful menu

Awesome smashed avo with poached eggs! Excellent , friendly service.
Jenni Lock
Love the food, the teas, the decor and the service. A new favourite local brunch spot!
Maureen Burke
Very poor service. Having waited almost an hour to be served, ended up having to leave without eating.
Mary-Anne Stuart
So great to find somewhere the offers more than the usual fare. My boiled eggs with toast soldiers and hot green sauce were spot on!

Great coffee, great Food and great friendly service.

Went there on Friday - the atmosphere is nice and coffee is OK but the Fried Chicken Burger & Crisp was pretty bad.

The chicken schnitzel (what the cafe call "Fried Chicken") was almost burnt & very dry - with a slice of tomato and some soggy lettuce.

Crisps were nothing but a handful of Red Rock Deli chips.

$19.50 for that - I could have done a much better job at home!

Then my son ordered a chicken burger at Costco yesterday afternoon and it was the same burger, just moist and much tastier, also in a brioche bun with crunchy iceberg lettuce and fresh tomato but I paid only $7 for it.

A relative who works on Auburn Road Hawthorn then told me Hello Sailor is a joint that some kids set up - these kids have no idea what quality food is, yet charge the same prices as cafes with decent food.

Never going back, and if you really want to go, I encourage you to just have a coffee (served in take-away cups only) and pastry (because they did not bake those)

Cute little cafe on a main road. Coffee is good, as is the service. Toilet is outside, which makes it awkward when it rains.

Walked past this place almost every day and decided to give it try today. It was quiet on a Sunday afternoon and there was enough staff but the service was just ok.

My burger was a bit lacking, could do with a bit more sauce as the chicken has not much flavours. It was a piece of chicken parma was tender but not juicy.

Hubby's pork belly omelette was good with bits of crackling.

The ice latte we has was pretty drinkable.
Charlie Bean
Has good reviews so I was a little disappointed. I ordered the waffles which were pretty on the plate but a little light on compared to the photos I saw in other folks reviews. Found them too dry in the mouth for my liking. Flavours were good though, just needed some more of the cheese cakey part or a raspberry sorbet or something. Coffee was good and the place had a nice chilled vibe. Friendly staff and a ripper live green wall inside as well.
Thought For Food
Great little cafe on Auburn rd. Can't go wrong with complimentary sparkling water. They used to not charge for almond milk either, but I think that's changed since I've been there. Food is great (green bowl is my favourite) but a little on the pricier side considering some of the dishes don't come with poached eggs (i.e. smashed avocado). Decor is great, and staff are friendly.

This cafe has done nothing but disappoint throughout my visits here. The interior design of the place is great and it’s around the corner from my house so I’ve thought to pop in a couple of times, however I will never be returning. On my first visit I walked in with my dad and a friend and no one acknowledged us whatsoever or even looked up for a good 10 minutes, we proceeded to sit ourselves in the window and then it would’ve taken another 10 for a waiter to come over and give us water and menus. The food the first time was average at best but they advertise that their orange juice is fresh on the menu, when in actual fact it is just cheap bottled stuff which is extremely deceptive.

On my second visit the same thing happened when I walked in, no one acknowledged us and we sat ourselves by the window, not sure why these standard hospitality practices aren’t being followed to greet customers when they walk in. After that my boyfriend ordered the blueberry smoothie and I ordered a chocolate milkshake. The milkshake was fine but the smoothie was literally warm slightly flavoured milk it was disgusting. We then ordered the fruit toast with caramelised pear and cream and caramel. Our cutlery wasn’t set before our food came and then once our food arrived the order had been taken wrong and we were each given a piece of plain fruit toast. I complained that this was not what we ordered and the waitress barely apologised and took our food back to be replaced. The food came back and they’d given us the exact same pieces of fruit toast but dumped a freezing cold pear on the top straight out of the fridge and a bit of cream on the side, the worst presentation and tasting meal I’ve ever had.

In a place like Melbourne where cafes are all competing to have the same brilliant standard this place just doesn’t cut it at all. Won’t ever be going back.
Food Fiend Melbourne
Great venue with super friendly staff. The coffee is delicious, but a bit steep at $4.20 for a small. I have dined here once on the weekend, when it was not super busy, and the service was a bit slow. I drive past it every morning and it's also pumping, so it must not bother most people.
S
Could definitely improve on table service & the human who served us had the personality of a brick wall...
Smashed avocado was quite overpriced for what it was & the eggs were overcooked by at least a year...
My smoothie was warm, not cold! Would have asked for it to be remade but too scared it would of taken another century to come out. Coffee was pretty good & the weather was fantastic but that had nothing to do with the cafe.
Beachie111
Rare for me to give 5 stars but had no choice

Sparkling water complimentry I was shocked

Ordered the breakie special pesto heirloom tomatoes with this astounding creamy mozzarella cheese ball like a steamed bun
called burrata...wow
Must try.
And poached eggs for $18

And coffee perfect too.
Staff nice
Guys well done.

3.7. First impressions good. We attempted to stop here for lunch around 12pm but no tables were available sadly. We went to Loc’s cafe up the road instead and that was terrific. We returned to Hello Sailor later though for a cleansing coffee.

I must say we very much liked what we saw here. It’s a really lovely fit out. Bright and stylish. Wonderful greenery around. Good playlist on. A great feel overall was our strong impression. A lovely pkace.

They’re at best practice here with water with free sparkling water on tap. Exactly as it should be. Onto more important things. The coffee here is superb. Smooth, silky and substantive. It was expertly made and we loved our long black and flat white respectively. Add a salted caramel cookie and all was good with the world.

Nice place. We’ll make it for a meal here next time. The dishes other people were tucking into nearby looked good.
Bry
Very disappointing today. Avo smash with very brown avocado that should never be plated up. Coffee was good
Only additional annoying thing was as we left the cafe which was super quiet and staff very rigid about no split bills in the weekend. I totally get during busy times. However when the cafe is this quiet its just a bit annoying especially when splitting with one person
Probably won’t go back.. main reason being food and it’s not a cheap eat!!
Christina AP Xu
Personal favourite. Always lovely and cosy. Great coffee and vibes. The only thing which bugs me from time to time is that, my soft boiled egg would be slightly over cooked, but staffs are usually helpful in sorting that out. Keep up the good work

So happy to have Hello Sailor back ! Loved coming here for their Smashed Avo's was sad that they were closed for so long !

Friendly staff and nice corner spot with tasty coffee.
Monica Rose
LOVED Hello Sailor.
The decor is amazing, we sat outside and their are carabiners to put your dog leads in while you eat/go inside to order a takeaway coffee.
Coffees are faultless, staff are friendly and attentive.
Will definitely have to come back to try some more breakfast options. Would have been five star however my poached eggs were very over cooked, hasn’t turned me off because everything else was of such a high standard I feel as though it was a once off.
Bite The Looks By BHA
It was winter season around june in 2016, when i decided to have some hot breakfast because it was so cold outside!

I ordered Pork belly which is so good!the sauce was blend with the salad.the meat was very tender & perfecly season although the meat was very little compare to the fat. The Breakfast bun was good too! The meat was soft and tender, perfectly cooked and season.lots of flavours when you eat with the sauce. However, its quite dry. The chai latte & coffe was very nice too!

Overall, the place was small but it was comfy, airy and bright.. the staffs were very friendly and kindly explaining us about the breakfast menu. It was such a pleasant breakfast experience, i’ll make sure to comeback here again and try the other menu!

#BHAsFoodDiary

Whole package! Love love love this place. Fantastic coffee, great food, and an awesome vibe. The only negative is that I wish it was closer so I could make it my regular :(
Mike
I visited Hello Sailor for the first time last week and the food & coffee was exceptional. I chose the Smashed Avocado which was cooked to perfection. While there was a delay in our meals, the waiter apologised for the inconvenience and gave us complimentary coffee. Will definitely be coming back here again!
Allie
Poor customer service and bad coffee, we will not be returning again. It’s a shame because it is in a good location, has nice decor and has potential.

This review is strictly for the coffee only.

Coffee is terrible. Don’t waste your money.

Only reason I’m being so reasonable with this review is because hey had a fantastic marriage equality rainbow logo on the front window. 🌈
Good Food Good Mood
Sometimes I do find it in my heart to let someone else chose the breakfast destination and on this lucky day my partner got to pick. It was an awful place for him to bring me to when I was trying to make healthy choices as some of the menu options sounded insanely delicious. He opted for his standard smashed avocado and ignored the sweet delights that spoke directly to my heart and soul and went for something savoury on multigrain with poachies. Still a very tasty choice. In fact the whole menu was appealing. Maybe there's something in this whole don't be a food control freak and let others dictate the restaurant sometimes thing.

It's been over a year since we've visited here and we regret not coming in earlier!
Such a nice interior with so much natural light and greenery and friendly staff to seat you upon arriving
We came in early on a Thursday morning when the place was relatively quiet, we were offered coffee immediately, which was delicious but perhaps a tad weak (personal preference).
We ordered the breakfast roll and the smashed avo.
The breakfast roll was amongst the best I've ever had - so simple yet done to perfection; plenty of bacon with minimal fat/rind, egg cooked exactly how I asked, the cheese had completely melted and added to the 'ultimate comfort food' vibe and the brioche bun was light toasted, yet soft without being too heavy, teamed with the tomato relish leaving the flavours perfectly balanced. If anything I'd have loved some rocket/spinach to help cleanse the palette but not a game changer!
The smashed avo was simple, yet delish with the avo being well seasoned and eggs cooked perfectly
I didn't get a photo of either as we couldn't wait to start but we'll definitely be back and if my self control allows I'll update this review with a pic
There's also a delicious looking selection of cakes at the counter, which is also on my 'to-try' list!
This place is a must if you're around Auburn rd during these spring months!
Sonia
Ordered takeaway soy latte
Dunno why they didn't fill my small keepcup. It was hardly 2/3rds full. Seen this first time in Melbourne... Also pretty sure this milk isn't soy it's almond. Seems like they've messed up my order. They've done this before too.
Was running late for train to work, too late to argue.
This cafe is generally fine for dine in.
Harriet Palmer
This cafe has a really lovely feel when entering. There is lots of greenery, a window to peak at the treats and friendly staff. I have my morning coffee here quite often but am waiting for some vegan options to join the menu. If there were more food options for me I'd eat here regularly !
Sarah Williams
Cute little cafe with a cosy interior space. Didn't order any drinks but the sweet potato was cooked to perfection. Definitely worth checking out if you're around Hawthorn.
Ben Turner
The food was pretty good, and service generally good. But entering the venue, it was rather full, everyone was busy, and we stood around for a few minutes before anyone confirmed our arrival. We then got a seat at the bench, asked about moving to a table when one was free, and the next people in after us were given the next available table. Annoying.

Secondary issue was the door, which didn't close on its own, so had to get up and shut the door 5-6 times throughout the meal. So hard to relax in that situation, unless you are happy to endure a constant draught.

Overall the meal and coffee WERE good, but the experience ended up less than amazing. It's enough to sour our first impression. Clearly enough people enjoy this busy cafe, but I'd recommend a table away from the door personally.
Split The Bill
I drive passed this place almost everyday, finally I had the chance to visit to grab a quick breakfast before work. I ordered crumpets with honey and butter and a Chai latte. Food and drinks came out quick. The service was fantastic, great to see people loving what they do. Worth a visit to try the delicious foods as well as to check out the deco. The outside looks like a ship where as inside looks so airy with pot plants hanging from the roof, love it.

Pure tranquility in one of the quieter streets of Hawthorn. After a recent fire, Hello Sailor reopened its doors not too long ago with a revamped interior. Lots of green mixed with bright wood colours and lots of natural light brighten up the space. A small menu impresses with the apparent high level of creativity that combines typical Melbourne brunch dishes with Asian flavours. We chose the pork bao as well as the sweet potato dishes and it was a delight. The pork was very moist and falling apart by the touch of the fork. It is a very simple dish with few ingredients but that's the best part of it as it brings out the full flavours of the pork. The sweet potato plate was fantastic. The sweetness of the sweet potato paired with the saltiness of the halumi and feta cheese as well as the umami of the poached eggs were amazing. Definitely one of the favourites brunch dishes so far in Melbourne. Finally, service and coffee are fantastic also. Check this one out when you are in Hawthorn. Rob & Seb

Was itching to try this place but it sadly burnt down last year. My goodness it was definitely worth the wait! I have been twice since the recent re-opening. The smashed avo is to die for , amazing portions (2 slices of bread , two poached eggs and a generous amount of avocado / feta and finger lime!!!!!!) under $20. 10/10 :)

We watched Hello Sailor opened in 2004 and had our first soy milk latte over there, we loved it!
After two years, we came again, hope to have the same amazing soy milk coffee. But I think they change the soy milk brand, the coffee we ordered were not as good as we expected. They didn't have the creaminess...
However, we still love to sit there and have our brunch there in this cozy, simple, lovely environment with lots of green plants and flowers. The cakes and pastries on the counter looked attempting as well...I will just save for next time.
#Farro salad (vegetarian option) with chorizo sausage-this salad packed so many good stuff, Farro+avocado+poached egg +feta cheese+cherry tomato+pistachio nuts...everything you need to make a healthy meal is in the plate! The smell of the chorizo sausage made me drool! Farro was cooked to perfect, not too hard, not too soft, it still has the chewy taste. I really enjoyed it~
#corn and avocado bruschetta-the bruschetta bread was crunch and chewy. The roasted capsicum mayo was really good, the whole thing felt very light and refreshing. Add some extra side dishes according to your preference to make it even better;)
Hello Sailor had quite extensive menu for brunch, during the weekend the restaurant was quite busy, so go at the right time.

Bianca
Fantastic cafe in hawthorn. Always get a table and the service is friendly and helpful. Their toastie is perfect when hungover but everything on the menu is delicious.
CheerfulPessimist
The place gets very busy at the weekends. When we arrived there were no indoor tables so we sat outside, as soon as a table came available the staff came out to let us know. The staff are friendly and helpful. The coffee was a little weak for my taste but the brunch was delicious, will definitely go back.
Alldasass
Forks are too skinny, woman beside us didn't shut up. Good coffee, bad milkshake. Had corn and avo bruschetta, delicious. A little loud but they played some absolute tunas. Will be back if they get new forks.
Shell
Friendly staff and great coffee. I tasted the vanilla macadamia ball it was delicious! I would definitely like to try their breakfasts they looked really good.
Delightfullytasty
Hello Sailor is a cafe in Hawthorn close to Auburn Station on the Belgrave/Lilydale/Alamein line, close to another cafe I've recently blogged about, The Counter. I'd noticed the cafe a little while ago because of the huge 'Hello Sailor' logo painted on the wall of the cafe (it's located on the corner of a street), and the fact it seemed to be always very busy when I went past.
Expensive Delicious Habit.
I had a really hard time choosing what to eat as everything on the menu looked inviting. It's a good problem to have! I chose the Warm Lamb Shoulder Salad minus the lamb! So it was a lovely salad with greens, toasted sunflower seeds, persian feta, mint and pomegranate, and I added avocado to replace the lamb.
David Smith
I have visited numerous times and I have always been delighted with the quality and friendly service. The food options are varied and always delicious and the coffee is top class.
Food Comatose
A charming little cafe located near Auburn station. I indulged in a toasted ham and cheese croissant and a creamy caffĂŠ latte - the perfect start to my day! As it is a local favourite, there may be difficulty getting a seat at peak times.
Zoe
Good breaky stop! Coffee was perfect drinking temp and just the right strength (surprising how many people don't quite get there on those!) Poached eggs on toast with avo smash and dukkah. Very tasty! Thanks guys!!

Decent coffee in a cafe with lovely & kitsch interiors, however, and I do mean HOWEVER... the young waitress serving us at the register this afternoon was probably one of the most abrupt, rude and angry hospitality staff I've ever encountered. Don't be taking your apron off and trying to serve us and don't give us sharp one worded answers. Terrible customer service. The worst part was she stormed out of the cafe to finish her shift and gave us a big dirty look. For ordering coffee? For this reason we won't be going back even though the coffee was very tasty.
Green credentials/ community. Ecco coffee card app on your mobile. Loyalty program.
Bafflegab. Coffee seven seeds churned out of a beautiful White la Marzocca machine. There is a wide selection of Storm in a Cup tea's, ranging from Black, Green, Herbal and Premium White Teas like their Forest White., Victoria Market juices. Thank you Water, Fentimans soft drinks,( try Wild English Elderflower or the Cherry Tree Cola and great daily selection of Little Bertha cakes.
Workability. Lots of tables, Wifi-BYO. Parking in Auburn Rd and local side streets.

Something different. Almond milk lattes, Speciality coffee roast of the day.

Eats. The menu at Hello Sailor has some of the usual suspects like eggs, bacon and Smashed Avocado, but I love how they have lots of different stuff on their menu. they have gold old fashioned homemade Crumpets, the most delicious Banana Bread with chocolate, pistachios, fresh blueberries and drizzled with salted caramel and my favourite Brioche French Toast with chocolate mousse. How decadent can breakfast get. If your after a more healthy alternative try the spiced Granola or the Coconut Bircher. Lunch is covered by 8 choices ranging from a warm Lamb Shoulder Salad, House Made Beans and the Hello Sailor Burger.

The Feel. This place is always busy on the weekend when I'm driving down Auburn Road. It's attracting a wide range of customers coming into sample their fabulous menu and their great friendly service. The 'Hello Sailor' theme is used through out the café. Big chunky rope bollards are used to define the area of the outside seating. Posters of Sailors on the walls give an overall Sea theme.
Their staff all have snazzy denim aprons which goes with the beautiful fit out that extends all the way though to their patron bathrooms. No detail has been overlooked. There's comfy banquette seating along the wall, Danish style timber chairs and stools in beautiful pale timbers and a Communal table at the back of the inside dining area.
AskRuthie Rating. ✔️✔️✔️✔️

My favourite local spot! The Staff are always so lovely and so is the coffee. I've never had a bad meal here, my menu favourite is the lamb salad but you can't really go wrong no matter what you order!

Very inviting ....

Who would not be intrigued and stop and try this cafe with a name like that?
So we did, a few times now ....

So after a few visits;
A very small, quaint, rather unique establishment; not a fan of their outdoor on the footpath, but the front room next to the windows, even the outdoor on the side on the way to the toilet is very enticing, relax atmosphere with a great view of the Geebung hotel.

On the Coffee, above average but nothing to rave about.

On the food side, the Menu is a little short and quite pricey too for the portion/size.

Overall, enjoyable small Cafe in Hawthorn, especially for those who loves to enjoy looking at a historical grand dame of a building.
Dion Kaliviotis
Come here every now again and it never disappoints. Prices are seriously reasonable and the portions of the dishes are generous. Great value for money is the Bircher or the smashed avo. They are tasty and will definitely fill you up! Would highly recommend.
Krystal
The smashed avocado from Hello Sailor was the best smashed avocado I have ever eaten!! The multigrain toast was full of seeds and very tasty! Cute little courtyard at the back and good service

Been visiting here almost every week since moving to the area and haven't been disappointed. love the crumpets and the hello sailor burger.
coffee is the best in the area. seriously live so locally and have tried everywhere. nothing beats hello sailor
Foodie In Chief
Awesome coffee, nicely decorated little cafe, I also liked their coffee cake. Haven't tried their brunch yet but will definitely go back for their perfect coffee!
Travelling Palate
Lovely cafe in Hawthorn's less popular street. Great selection on the menu for vegetarian and pregnant patrons. Thoroughly recommend the chia coconut pudding- absolutely delicious, though a little additional honey improved the dish immensely

Small place in auburn village. The best part were the salads. The smoked chicken is heavenly. The smoothies are rather tasteless. Breakfast is average.
Happy Traveller
Banana bread was amazing. Coffees were great, went back for seconds. Worth the drive from the other side of town. Would definitely go back!

Meet up with a friend here this morning , lovely place for coffee . The place isn't huge but feels very open inside the cafe . There is also outdoor sitting for a sunny day .

Just stopped in for a quick coffee
Staff were polite and coffee was good
We loved the decor! Well presented with the industrial greenery look

And of course, at any given time, why would you not love some brunch? This place is a great local pitch stop in my opinion, especially if you're looking for a quick but good feed and something to start your day with. My poached eggs were just cooked to the right consistency that I wanted which IS A BONUS as a lot of other brunch places are unable to do it well. Everything was fresh and presentation wise? Yasssss. Overall, gorgeous interior and lovely atmosphere. However, the staff could be a little more engaging even if it is 9am in the morning.
Biscuit Musca
One of my favourite cafes to go along auburn rd. Love the outdoor seating. Service always great, food is excellent. I have a terrible case of sweet tooth, so my favourite dish is the brioche French toast with chocolate mousses, mascarpone cream, strawberries and chocolate shards.
CJ
Hello sailor has delicious food. They are always consistent with the meals and the staff as super friendly. Really nice place to sit and relax. Great atmosphere.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Hello Sailor is a good local cafe with plenty of outdoor seating options along Auburn Road and the side street for those with prams and dogs. I went for more a breakfast offering of smashed avocado, poached eggs, chargrilled lime on toasted sourdough ($18).
Glenn
Went there for Saturday brunch..
Coffee was good although a bit slow. Tables could have been left cleaner and empty glasses removed..it was busy though.. The meatball sub was average with lack of substance or colour and certainly overpriced for what it was. Better value in a sub from subway.
Other food did look good, maybe I just ordered poorly
Annie Haak
Went for brunch with my girlfriends on Saturday, it was quite busy but they were realy helpful in giving me updates every few mins. They could probably look into investing some heaters outside as it was so cold waiting outside and not much room inside.

I ordered an hot chocolate - mork once I was seated but had to request again once my friends arrived. Eventually waited about 20 mins just for an hot chocolate. For people who enjoy bitter hot chocolates this is definitely the drink for you. I prefer it more sweeter (personal preference).

I ordered the toasted crumplets with side of bacon. My whole meal including drink was $23 which I thought was quite excessive when the dish was quite small. Don't mind the place but wouldnt rush back anytime soon.

Simon
Just go there and enjoy. I've been a few times now. Food lives up to and beyond expectations. Great people. I rate this one up there with the best I've had anywhere. Coffee smooth, poached eggs perfect. Great serving size.
Kira
The food is consistently great!! I love the French toast and the smashed avo and feta!! They have really good gluten free bread and if the weather is nice, sitting outside is a must!! The coffee could be better but overall it's a good little cafe!!
Lizzie
Amazing coffee and outstanding food. Lovely cute cafe always try something different on the menu and never disappoints. There Chai is beautiful and worth trying. Nice and friendly
Amazon
Great coffee and food. Menu had changed since my first visit which was good to see as it was originally too basic. Service is attentive but could be more friendly/welcoming.
Hospo
Nice food, lovely decor but service was appalling. I've never had so many staff actively try to avoid eye contact and ignore customers. Not one staff member smiled or made us feel welcome. More interested in flirting with each other than customer service. I'll give one more chance because the food was lovely. Reasonable prices and okay coffee.
Soulfoodie
I love the decor in this place, so light and inviting. There service was good and drinks were nice. The food was ok, nothing out of the ordinary though.

I just had a little look through my photos folder and it's definitely time to have a clear out before I start finding dead cats hidden under mouldy files. . I tend to enjoy eating anything that's edible, and sometimes unwittingly find that I have eaten things that are not (I swear I didn't know!). That said, if I find something questionable you know you need to avoid it like the bubonic plague. I digress. Let's start with a little positivity on this page, however, and I can't think of anything that evokes happy like this elegant set-up called 'Hello Sailor'.

Too expensive average food.. Wouldn''t go here again.
The food was ok and for my breakfast I was served the ends of the bread loaf under as toast under brekky so barely any bread,
31.50 for 1 coffee and an bacon eggs and a few extras. Poor value.

Poor Value, long wait. Toasted cheese and ham sandwich.. So called "leg ham" looked like cheap compressed stuff you see sliced up in supermarkets, and only a couple of lousy slices..the amount of cheese was even more stingy. Rip-off! The bread, however was great
Also, no problem with the staff , they were good - sounds like they have been given a talking to , judging from other people's previous very negative comments

Over priced under stuffed bagguettes.. I expect that in flinders street station.. not from a "trendy" (wanky) cafe. Won't be going back.

Not the best. Poorly extracted coffee - it was like drinking hot milk. I had to throw it out and go to another coffee shop. Service by the female cashier - not so great. Interiors are very nice.

The burger is Aaaaamazing!! .... The burger is Aaaaamazing!!
The right balance of every flavour, and more importantly the right kind of pickles.
The staff are lovely and attentive with a genuine smile.
The coffee is delicious and the ambiance relaxing with some great music for a Sunday treat!
(The savoury muffin I'm told was just as yummy, with the mix all the way through, not just on the surface!☺️).
Quite easy to get lost in time here with all the yummy food & beverages at your fingertips.

Interesting fact: The owner is an ex navy. The nautical ropes outside enticed me to try this place.
I went with the corn and bacon on toasted brioche with vintage cheddar, two poached eggs, cilantro and jalapeĂąo relish. Although tasty, the dish is for those that want to over indulge and enjoy a rich breakfast. I'm interest to return and try a few other items on their breakfast menu.
Instagram: @twohungrybirds

Nice food, service was good. Rocked up with my girlfriend and the service was good.. the staff and owners really nice and cannot fault the place
1st time my friend and i have been there and we thought we try another local cafe and will return
Hot chocolate, fresh juice.. all nice
and the Smoked Chicken / Camebert roll was really good
not easy to eat when you have to talk... but that is what happens with all rolls , you have to take a bite so to be subtle to not make a mess, you take your time..
all good. will be back and try other food on the menu...

Don't bother.....coz they can't. Walked in about 1pm on a Saturday afternoon and we ignored and then given a sullen look of bother by one of the wait staff. Service was very average, food far too expensive for quality and quantity but coffee was OK. Two male staff somewhat made up for the terrible service and ultimately bland vibe that was given off by especially one of the girls working there. The small strip of Auburn Rd has other great, friendly places to go. Shame.

Waited 45 mins for food that was "another 10 minutes away". People on same communal table were the same. Never ever write reviews like this, but totally disappointed. Walked out in disgust.
No wonder it always looks busy, so people waiting for food.
Don't even bother!!!

We love this cafe and come here often for the coffee. The ricotta hot cakes are to die for (try them with the tandoori honey, very interesting flavour, as opposed to the caramel, which can be quite sweet). For an extra kick for those with a sweet tooth, try the white chocolate rocky road.....YUM!!!!

Just finished our second brunch in two days from here! Excellent service, friendly staff and great quality food. Our meal did take a little while to come out on the second visit due to how busy the cafe was, but we where promptly offered a free round of coffees. Definitely worth a visit!

Average coffee, average service. I've had breakfast and lunch and both times staff were indifferent and coffee was just warm milk.
Nice fit-out doesn't help if the coffee is crap.

I'll stick to being a land lubber. Lovely decor and staff, great location, tasty breakfast....the real issue with this place is the coffee. The various reviews are correct, if you prefer your coffee subtle, smooth and milky, this is the place for you. Having given the place a number of tries, and I guess the positive is that they are consistent, but when you order a cappuccino and you're unsure if you've accidentally been served a hot chocolate, it's not a good sign.

Decor was nice. Service was terrible. Ordered a chai latte, which was far too weak and milky, while waiting for our food (French toast, and bacon and eggs). Can't comment on the quality of the food, because when we enquired after 45 mins how much longer we would be waiting, we were told 'about another 10mins'! Seriously? 55 min wait for food at 1pm on a Saturday?! Surely, it can be predicted that Saturday lunchtime is one of the busier times of the week, and staffing organised appropriately. Furthermore, no communication that there was a delay, and no apology. When we had to leave, as we had an appointment, we were still charged for the chai latte. It would have been a nice gesture to waive the cost. End result: we missed out on lunch on Saturday while we sat for the best part of an hour in their cafe. Not going back.

NEVER HAVE BREAKFAST HERE! Hello sailor is actually terrible! I had fried eggs on toast and the toast bread was moldy! So disappointed with the service as well! Coffee not great either.

Coffee was beautiful and creamy, and the food was delicious. Scrambled eggs were fluffy and sat perfectly on the buttered multigrain (soft bread with a perfect crunchy crust). The smashed avocado was incredible with the dukkah and Persian feta. Would highly recommend!

Weak. When I order a coffee I expect a coffee, not a warm cup of milk. Constantly happening with my take aways and when I request a strong coffee, which should be a normal coffee, I get charged an extra 50cents, so that's $4.30 for a regular takeaway! Robbery!

Good place for brunch. Interesting brunch menu. Had the French toast with rhubarb and mascarpone and it was delicious.

They keep me sane. Coffee is the first thing that officially starts my day & nothing worse then having a 'hit & miss' morning coffee.... That DOESN'T happen at Hello Sailor, I consistently start my day on a good note with their 'all rounder' team having not only a friendly face each & every day, no matter who is on the machine I am guaranteed a smooth, creamy perfect blended coffee! It's one of those really unhealthy relationships... If they closed for a day I would be baffled & frazzled ;)

Shockingly bad coffee.

Goodbye Sailor. We were attracted to the place as the restaurant looks great but unfortunately the staff were very grumpy last Sunday morning.( particularly the female) The music was blaring so you couldn't converse with anyone - we won't go back!

Awesome new outdoor dining area! Plenty of charm and character, an adventurous and creative menu, handsome staff, on the right side of the street. Get in early on the weekends!

Hello Sailor. I like the look of the Restaurant but not the food. Therefore, I would not go there to eat even
though I live 3 minutes away from it up Victoria Road. There are many Cafes and restaurants close
handy that offer a far better range of food and more to the liking of the the ordinary people. I
have lived in Hawthorn all my life and have seen many changes in Auburn Road. Business's
come and go.

What a gem of a find! Great coffee, service and beautiful menu. Get in early for brunch during the weekend or you'll have a small wait but it's worth it.

Yummy food, good coffee and friendliest staff! Recommended.

Crumpet Magic. Looking for a new cafe to eat at midday, I by chance ventured to a cafe called HELLO SAILOR CAFE. Unknown what to do chose, I went for crumpets with sliced strawberries and bananas with smooth cream. On top of that I ordered a cappuccino extra froth medium. Medium cappuccino yeh right. Huge cup and the coffee was not too strong. Just right and not scolding. Great overall performance especially the quick service. Keep up the great work. Will be back very shortly.

Ticks Nearly All The Boxes. I discovered this lovely cafe yesterday morning when I was in Hawthorn with my five year old daughter for a meeting. I was instantly impressed with the high level of service from all the staff members... all genuinely friendly and attentive and made us feel welcome for a quick coffee at the counter, and again after my meeting as we sat down to relax over morning tea (a generous serving of fruit toast lush with dried fruit!). The decor is fresh and it really is an inviting space... somewhere you can easily see yourself sitting for hours over brunch and then lunch.

None of this mattered in the end though, as the coffee was SUCH a disappointment. It was so far beyond weak that it may as well have just been a cup of foam. We use Seven Seeds at home (and Brother Baba Budan is one of our favourite cafes in the city) and it has never tasted like this. I have no idea why so many cafes in Melbourne seem to think that a standard coffee only needs a single shot. A standard coffee has always been a double shot, and so it always should be. Unfortunately there is a new wave of trendy cafes that deem a double shot as constituting a 'strong' coffee at an additional charge. Needless to say I ordered a peppermint tea when we returned for our fruit toast, and then came home to make myself an amazing coffee. There needs to be a rule where if you can make the coffee better yourself, it should be free!!

Came in on a busy Sunday... Place was pumping!! Great coffee! Great tucker and great FOH staff! The Kiwi Cola- cures a tight head! ;)
Keep it up!

Smart Little Cafe. Great Atmosphere, and attentive staff, but the coffee - very, very ordinary. Happy to support new and local cafes, but at $4.30 for insipid coffee, we won't be back.

Went in with high expectations, looks great from the front and the decor is nice. The staff are really nice as well, very friendly. However, the coffee was terrible. It was so weak, we had to send it back. Not really impressed by the coffee, if they are able to improve the coffee, I might be convinced to go back. Unfortunately to coffee turned me off this place.

Delicious brunch. Had a delicious breaky here on Monday, I had the bircher muesli and my boyfriend the brioche roll with sausage. Coffee and juice where also really good! Wished we lived in melbourne as this would deffinately become our regular. Thanks guys :)
