Review Auburn Hotel - Hawthorn

John Montesalvo
Had dinner here with my daughter and grandkids last Sunday . This is one of those beautiful old pubs that it’s a pleasure to be in. Had a little glitch with the cooking of the steak that was well and truly overdone . To their great credit there was no hesitation replacing it. As far as food is concerned unfortunately it’s just a pub meal at a restaurant price . Not sure that I need to go back, but I’m not saying don’t go. Try it for yourself .

Always thought of this place more as a bar than a restaurant. Used to have big Sunday sessions. Nice food, entrees and dessert was the stand out. Dad will enjoy the atmosphere, I certainly did. Could have a discussion without going deaf. The website had a gallery section for all the meals on the menu, excellent work.

I love the setting of the igloos, it’s pretty cool and works well for winter, we were warm eventhough it was cold and windy outside. Very glad staff always close the igloo when they go out. Staff are very friendly. Our entree was really nice, very accommodating for a friend who has dietary restriction. It was a generous entree amount, I was actually getting close to full just eating entree. There was a big time gap between entree and main dish, I don’t know whether staff were just short and we were forgotten. I guess being in the igloo, it’s kinda hard to call staff, except we get out of igloo. Main were rather disappointing to me. Steak was ok, I have had better although I like the sauce. Fish was ok. The side dishes of veggies like the wombok and carrot were very bland, it’s like no seasoning at all. I just feel overall the main isnt as good as entree. Dessert was ok, cake was burned on the side. It was a simple dessert which was ok but maybe could do something else to make it more wow. I wasnt a fan of the campari spritz I had, it was really strong and bitter. So my impression is that this place is great to hang out with friends, because it is kinda private insite igloo to chat, and a different experience great for winter. For the meal and drinks, $69 gave us a lot of foods but main and dessert were nothing special, which can be improved because you have lovely ingredients, just not the right seasoning. So I feel it is more about the experience, good for casual special occasion like hens day but food not good enough for romantic occasion or if you wanna have really good foods.

Apon reading some mixed reviews I really didn’t know what to expect, well all I can say is GO and check it out, because our food and drinks were spectacular! The Parma was amazing!!! Honestly one of the best in Melbourne for sure. Staff are very well equipped even on busy days. Thanks for making our night special

Booked a igloo and got surprised with the quality of food. When I booked it, igloo seating is a set menu option so I thought I probably just paying for the igloo as gimmick didn't have any expectation on food. Turns out it's totally delicious and worth the price! For $69 you get a 3 courses meal + special cocktail. On a rainy winter night, the igloo is surprisingly cozy. It has a heater and Bluetooth speaker inside. It feels very private too as no one else can hear you vice versa. Good experience!

We had a fantastic night dining at Auburn Hotel’s winter igloo experience as a group of 4. We were thoroughly impressed with the quality and volume of food on the 3-course shared menu and the staff went above and beyond to accomodate dietary requirements within our group. The service was very quick and attentive which made the igloo dining feel even more like an occasion. Thank you for such an enjoyable service, we can’t wait to return!

Only came here for a beer so can’t speak for the food, but there’s a decent selection of beers here. It was disappointing to only find 2 or so craft beers here with Balter and Stone & Wood being on offer but those are great choices. Got one of those and a Guinness and those never disappoint. The ambience of the pub is great with many tv screens available to watch some sport and it has a classic pub feel.

We had an extended family lunch there today. Good food and lovely staff but like many at the moment obviously understaffed as food and drinks took longer than ideal. In saying that the staff were lovely. I loved that there was an area for people to bring along their pups. Great to see. Thoroughly entertained watching the puppies through the window. Would definitely recommend.

My partner and I went last night for our monthly date night. We wanted a pub, so we chose here. I appreciated the technology and signage put up to meet covid requirements but some free wifi would have been appreciated to make check in quicker. My phone wouldn’t pick up the 4g and the waitress assured me everyone has trouble because of the buildings thick walls. So what should have been a 1 min process to sign in almost took me 10 mins! They then had a clever QR code reader at each table, where you scan it to bring up the menu and can order and pay from your table. Would recommend to reprint the table number signs to make the qr code higher- because the only way I could get it to scan was by picking it up, which makes “contactless” pointless. This system was fab and very Efficient. Only issue is there was no clear way to flag wait staff for: table water, or condiments like salt and pepper. <br/><br/>The venue interior was beautiful, appreciated some ambience but it seemed so dark that the lighting was putting us to sleep. <br/><br/>I ordered the porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce and switched out my salad for veggies. As I am pregnant I asked for my steak well done, it did come out quite pink in parts, but mostly was cooked well. I still ate it all as it was yummy. The veg were fresh, clearly hand picked and tasty. Simply steamed I think and appeared to have a buttery taste, which was fab. The chips were good, the seasoning was tasty. If anyone knows what the seasoning is on these chips let us know! It was driving my partner and I crazy guessing. It’s kind of tangy with pepper? I would give my dish a 4/5 as there was some room for improvement but all in all it was a solid dish. <br/><br/>My partner got the Parma which was tasty, but lacking a touch more sauce. <br/><br/>We shared a sticky date pudding which was light and fluffy, but needed more sauce and ice cream. <br/><br/>I may sound super negative above but honestly all in all it was pretty good. <br/>

I wonder if the chef and service team ever taste their meals... all 4 meals were dreadful last night.<br/>Galette was chewy and ordinary<br/>Chicken was tasteless and obviously had been microwaved and was served on a horrible peas base<br/>Calamari was oily, and served on what looked like tomato paste<br/>The barramundi was ok, but served with an inedible fennel side, and a chewy stale base... ugh!<br/><br/>This is my local that I have been eating at for years.. has the chef changed? <br/><br/>Suggest they order their own meals and see what I mean. <br/><br/>Too expensive at $114 for the meals with 1 glass of wine only

Went to the Auburn with a group of 11 people to celebrate two birthdays, unfortunately the lack of service and the spacing between bringing meals to our table killed our evening. We had about 50 minutes between bringing the first mains to our table and the last main arriving. The excuse was that they were busy, no question they were, but why take a booking if you can’t deliver the service. Not an experience I would choose again!
Good Food Good Mood
We headed to the Auburn hotel today for some drinks in the sunny courtyard and several bowls of chips. There are distinctions here; they offer regular, beer battered and wedges all of which we happily tried. The building has a really pretty interior and some of the menu items being ordered looked really yummy. Will definitely be back for lunch

Really good vibe here! We enjoyed some drinks and shared a couple of dishes together on a sunny winters day! It’s got a great court yard and it’s good for family entertaining or functions! Recommend!
Steven
We ordered the Wagyu steak and it was terrible. No other way to describe it.
Food For Thought
Fantastic to spend sometime with friends in one of the gorgeous igloos, which was warm and comfortable despite of the cold winter nights. The food platter (cheese/cold meats/olives/liver pate/bread/cheese/crackers/hummus/celery/grapes/honey) was so generous in serving size but extremely delicious. I loved the chocolate fondue with fresh bananas and strawberries...honeycomb, marshmallows, shortbread and brownie were definitely a hit too!

The Winter Igloos are sensational. We had an igloo for 2 people even though it can seat 8-10. It’s a great experience on a winters day/night. For $49 per person it’s great value getting a food platter and including a drink each...and the Igloo is yours to use for 2.5 hours. The Auburn Hotel is a great hotel with various rooms to use. Might have to come back with a group of friends.
Mistermister
Great place for parents and kids on a Sunday. I call it kid friendly Sunday sessions. Free face painting, balloons and petting zoo on Sundays. Outdoor heating available. Massive parmas (on the dry side) and impressive chicken burgers. Kids nuggets and chips were good, too. Definitely will come back.
The Next Rush
The Auburn Hotel is at it again.  Just when we thought they couldn’t top the botanical garden summer pop-up day beds, they’ve answered the call to Winter with a magical construct of igloos.   Teaming up with Wild Turkey, its the sweet edge of their American Honey bourbon that will flavour the complementing cocktail menu of the season!  Melbourne Rooftop Honey keeps the menu on theme with packages available also available for larger groups of up to 28 in the mega igloo!

Pretty standard pub food with a wide variety at prices that are again pretty standard. The quality is variable, the same dish can be very good one day and quite ordinary the next. It’s a busy pub and maybe sometimes the volume gets the better of them. <br/>

Love this place - great staff, massive venue and the outdoor area has been one of my favourite spots during Summer this year. Their steak night on Tuesdays is great value. I had a pre-Christmas lunch here with Dad and booking a table online was super easy. Their menu is a wee bit expensive, but the parma and steak goes down a treat. Loving their Hendrick's collaboration at the moment.

Fairly traditional pub with a decent beer garden. menu features your typical pub style meals as well as a few more refined dishes. I went for the barramundi fillet with cavalo nero, romesco, white bean purée and tomato salsa and chorizo crumb. A really enjoyable dish however I felt the purée was a little bit too creamy and sweet.

A great pub in Hawthorn. Its cosy with heaps of seating and screens with the cricket playing. Great happy hour deals and some damn good chicken wings.
Timinmelbourne
A grand old lady. This pub is big w lots of break out areas. <br/><br/>The beers are James Squire, Carlton, Hahn, some craft beers such as white rabbit and a Hawthorn IPA which I ordered. This was a tasty brew, as I'm not really a fan of<br/>IPA but I enjoyed this one, although I could easily have had another Hahaha ... <br/><br/>I was lucky enough to stumble upon happy hour so the pint was only $8. Great value. <br/><br/>Mmnn hard to hear inside here but it was happy hour :)

The high rating is for the innovative and fun concept of the Winter Igloo. Five transparent tents with white frames and fairy lights transformed the lawn into a fun and slightly magical place to spend an evening. Comfortable seats and blankets in each weather proof igloo created a cosy atmosphere. Attentive service ensured we always had food and drinks.<br/><br/>The Chef's Tasting Plate was generous and came with a beverage, selection of cold cuts and antipasto plus a chocolate fondue that you need a spoon (or a ladle?) for. The Goat Curry was generous and tasty but a little tough.<br/><br/>It was a great way to enjoy 3.5 hours at the pub. Definitely recommend early bookings to avoid disappointment.

One of my colleague at work booked this Igloo themed set up at Auburn hotel. We were all wondering how that would turn out and when we went there, it was amazing especially during the sunset. It was so cozy inside the Igloo and they provided heater and blankets. Their $40 menu set was just heaven with cheeses, chicken wings, pickles, turnip, olives and bread. It didn’t just end there but they served the menu with beer/wine of choice and chocolate fondue for the perfect ending to an endless laughter. <br/>

The Auburn Hotel is an outstanding pub. Food here is excellent and maybe a bit classier than the average standard pub grub. There are different types of steaks to choose from, pasta, salad, pie, curry, as well as the classics such as chicken parmigiana and burgers. Dining menu is very well versed. I found the rib eye is done to perfection (21 days dry aged, cooked medium rare in case you’re wondering) and it’s best to share it with someone unless you can finish 750g by yourself. Portion is generous and offers good value for money. I would definitely come back here again.
Madam E The Vegan
Nice venue. Typical and expensive pub food. Would be nice to see more vegetarian and vegan options because the menu is very meat heavy. On Wednesdays they do $20 schnittys but no eggplant version :( 👎

Only ever been here for a drink a few times so cannot comment on the food. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. They had a number of Christmas parties going on at once but we were still taken care of in a timely manner with good service.

Ratio Decidendi: Still working my way through the menu, but the Auburn Hotel is quickly becoming my favourite go-to for a long and lazy Sunday lunch with friends. While the yesteryear charm of its Victorian-esque interior is unmistakable, it’s the outdoor courtyard which has stolen my heart. A laid-back space with truly neighborhood vibes that’s shared by mates, families and couples alike.

The staff here provide good service but the food is lacking. The aglio olio was so bland (consistent between 5 of us who ordered that) that I had to add chilli flakes halfway through although it didn't help. Lamb confit was only slightly better. Prices are also not justified for the quality of food. It cost $60++ for the aglio olio, lamb confit and a cider. Would not return.

I have been to The Auburn Hotel a couple of times now. Service is always fairly quick. <br/>On my most recent trip my friends and I got a bowl of chilli beef chips and normal chips to share. The menu lists the chips as beer battered- however they are just normal chips which was a bit disappointing. <br/>The chilli beef chips with cheese were great and a very generous serving size. <br/>In the past I have had a burger there which was also quite nice. <br/>The atmosphere in the beer garden is good on a warm afternoon/evening.

What a grand old lady this pub is. Magnificent building, high roofs and period features galore, but at the same time not out of date. The outside beer garden looked lovely. We ate in the dining room, at a marble table and with plush carpet. It was so lovely to be at a dining venue where the sound wasn’t bouncing around everywhere. Our wait staff were extremely knowledgeable and efficient. Thank you. And the chicken Parma on special was the largest I think I have ever seen. Very tasty. Good venue to remember for dinner with friends.

The updated food and bar menu is great! All your pub favourites with a modern touch. The service on Sunday was horrendous! None of the bar staff knew the menu or what's going on in general. Our finished plates were left on the table (out in the hot sun) for more than an hour. There was even a dog roaming around (off leash), which was fine in the beer garden, but it went into the dining room too. I understand that the staff may be inexperienced and young (cheaper to have young kids working on Sundays) but train them first! Or have one experienced waitstaff on!

What happened here? From kid-friendly to smoker-friendly and kid-unfriendly. This place used to be great, if a little pricey. But now, they're doing it so bad i won't go back, even though I live within 200m of the place 😢 I went with my little boy for a 5.30 dinner on a Wednesday, intending to chill with a wine and dinner while my little boy ate/played in the sand-pit. They've changed the outdoor seating arrangement so the outdoor undercover area is competely for smokers (why bother having a sandpit if it's in the smoking area) and we were asked to move to the covered seating with the loud footy TV and associated loud boozing footy viewers. Also, the kid's chicken burger had spicy chutney - no kid eats that, total waste of $12 and had to deal with an unhappy and hungry 4yo while I picked bones and scales out if my fish pie. This experience makes me so sad. Management has really dropped the ball here. I recommend going elsewhere

My very first Online review!! We hadn't booked last Friday evening, but were welcomed in as 'Walk ins' and seated by friendly staff. We live locally but haven't been to the Auburn for a meal in a very long time. The dining room was comfortable and inviting with roomy tables and open fire place. We ordered wine while we perused the menu. Everything sounded good (as it does on many menus) - but this exceeded all expectations! I chose the Barramundi with leeks and mushroom custard. I have to say it was outstanding - all cooked to perfection and thoughtfully constructed. My partner had his all time pub favourite, Chicken Parma which was thoroughly enjoyed and very generously sized! We will definitely return and I think I will have to order that Barramundi again .... so very good! So Auburn Hotel .... Look after your chef and keep him/her happy!!! Wait staff were charming and helpful also. For us it was an excellent experience - great value.

First time to the Auburn, great old pub wonderful feeling, from the small sports bar to the formal dinning and wine bar. Spent the arvo in the beer garden. We ate from the bar menu, good small selection really tasty. Definitely coming back.

Visited last Friday with the family and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the meals and some comments from staff members.  My wife and I ordered the shared plate of Rib Eye.  At $65 dollars I would expect a meal that would suit 2 people but instead received what in reality was a meal for one person disguised as being two.  Grossly inadequate and we both left the hotel looking or a McDonalds burger.  The shared rib eye was effectively price doubled but not quantity doubled.  The next issue was my daughter requesting grilled fish rather than fried. the response was no they could not cook grilled fish and would have to make do with fried or select something else.  Seriously!!  They cant put a piece of fish on a hot plate!!  Chips that then came with another meal were old an dried and shrivelled.  Now to the staff, apart from being unaccommodating, I was told some 40 mins after ordering that the potatoes that were to arrive with the Rib Eye were not available as they has run out of potatoes.  Yes this is no joke they actually ran out of potatoes!  Looking at the other reviews below it seems the food standards have not improved at all despite the management responses that they are always looking for ways to improve. Clearly they are not!!!  Suggestion:  Sack your cooks and hire a good chef!!!!

Dropped in for lunch on Sunday. It's a lovely old hotel built in 1888 but rather dark and cold. Service was quick and friendly but it's a bit too expensive for what you get. The burger was ok, the "beef pie" was really a cottage pie which was quite bland and the salad had no dressing! The crispy duck tasted nice at first but after much chewing it was dry and not further enhanced by the salad it was sitting on. The Asian greens were ok. Would not return.

The layout and space of this pub is nice, but unfortunately that's about all it has going for it. Waitstaff all seem super grumpy and are very slow to take orders, food is pretty ordinary (chips lack salt and crunch, $20 plate of nachos with guacamole apparently means corn chips, some cheese and a tiny bit of diced avocado...) Plus, the beer selection is very stock standard.

My review is solely based on the service of the Irish bearded fellow who treated me with absolute respect and great service tonight in the front dining room Thank you. I'm sure the owners will know who I mean, he is a gem. I eat out a lot and he went above and beyond x

Came here with a group of friends for lunch today. Extremely long waiting times to get our food when it wasn't even busy. After a long wait the food was way below average. Food is overpriced for what you get. <br/><br/>Amongst the complaints the meat was very chewy unpleasant to eat, (small T bone steak).<br/>The lamb targine was nice however didn't expect the meat to have bones. <br/>The seared fillet of Salmon was nice.<br/>Won't be returning.

Soo good to have our local pub put on a decent happy hour! $8 drinks from 4-6, beer garden is so nice and is the perfect way to end the day. Food is pricy but the bar menu is good for a snack

Had Angus Charolais Tri Tip a month ago, it was tough and chewy. Last night had Beetroot Salad entree, very plain, no dressing, main was Porterhouse, again very tough, chewy and undercooked. After one or two mouthfuls I could not chew the meat, I had to spit it out. For a cost of $50.00 I expect better quality. Overall very disappointing dining experience.

Overpriced and underdelivering. Great venue, good beverage variety and great service. Meals are good, don't get me wrong - they are just too expensive.

Very disappointed. Leaving a review because I wish The Auburn Hotel Pub displays a better customer service skill in the future. I have been visiting the Auburn Hotel Pub for more than 2 years. Perhaps not all staffs recognise me since I am visiting in random times, some do, some do not. Still I would introduce myself a returning customer. <br/>The hotel serves the Guinness perhaps the best in the area and when it is not prime, the staffs acknowledge it and react appropriately. I appreciate their great customer service very much, and I feel lucky to live around.<br/>Since a few weeks ago, The hotel has been stopped serving Guinness for an issue that has to do with the gas according to the staffs. They would say 'Sorry, we're working on it.' and every time I get back, I could not get it, however, I have been returning every now and then, wish to get a nice pint of Guinness on my way back home, ended up with holding other drink with a bit of disappointment. But, that is not the point of my complaint. <br/>I have heard an excuse that I would never expected to hear from the hotel, saying 'It needs certain type of gas...... and it is not our fault."<br/>Who would you blame it to then? Certainly blaming others is not a business strategy for building a rapport with customers I suppose. I hope the Hotel acknowledge the issue, and provide the customer service with maturity and responsible manners.

I strongly suggest that you check out the new menu at the Auburn. This place is a wonderful local venue that provides excellent share plates and quality food. <br/>I had the crispy duck salad, which I would highly recommend. Very fresh and tasty. Our party shared nachos and a cheese board which are really good value for money. <br/>The service here is fantastic and you feel as though the staff genuinely care about you.

Great place, and friendly service. We shared the Wagyu rump and although it was a very simple meal, it was most importantly delicious. We also enjoyed the cheese board and the Eton mess. <br/>They didn't have a cocktail menu, but were able to make up something for my friend.<br/>I would recommend them and return. <br/>

Designated driver please?<br/>Your typical pub food with an extraordinary wine list, a high end Cellar.<br/><br/>Food is average for what they are charging, not value for money, however we are impressed with their wines.<br/><br/>I would go back just for a drink or two, designated driver?
Dinner Out
Good dog friendly pub but the food is average pub food that is over priced.<br/>

Been to the pub since I was 17 (30  yrs ago) known as the "Geebung" which was totally different as a venue compared to the hotel today.  We've been to the fine dining part of the hotel for dinner a few times each year with family and the menu changed seasonally but the grill steaks of different cuts have been a stable.  Just a quick summary: Don't expect high quality food here but consistently reasonable is why we go back knowing exactly what we will get.  The steaks have been done exactly the way we requested (Medium rare comes out as  medium rare, not median well).  The hand cut chips were a little soggy. We've never left the place hungry after a two-course meal.  The ambience of the place depends on where you're situated in the hotel - it has options for outdoors, quick drink after work, or full dinning experience.

Positives:<br/>Selection of wines,<br/>Staff,<br/>ambiance,<br/>dog friendly,<br/><br/>Negatives:<br/>Prices,<br/>Chef, couldn't cook for nuts<br/>Chips soggy,<br/>Juniper fried Calamari with with squid-ink sauce, interesting but no taste what so ever, but lots of deep frying oil on the plate, it actually represented a little lake.<br/>Good way of loosing local customers

All I can say is awesome! <br/>Staff 👍👍Management 👍👍Food 👍👍<br/>I moved into Hawthorn from Sydney about 3 months ago, and every time I've been in here I've had an awesome time. <br/>It's always happening in there, and my flat mate agrees that it's a hidden gem in the burbs and it's getting busier all the time. Downside of being popular it's hard to get a table in the bar area (not problem as though as they have same awesome open fires to stay warm by, even outside ones too)<br/>Friday after work crowd is full of locals and regulars, the two Mangers Andy and Fergus (chirpy lads they are) are always greeting people by name and engaging with the punters which tells you why it is! Something rare where I come from (drank at my old local for 3 years and never got recognised) <br/><br/>Looking forward to hanging in your beer garden in the summer lads, keep up the good work

Me and my hubby have been geebung regulars for years - we decided to go for tea last week at the now rebranded Auburn Hotel - visually it's gorgeous. Beautiful atmosphere, especially for a pub. Unfortunately the menu while trying to match the surroundings fell waaay short. It's prices are ridiculous for the food we received. Jalapeño poppers drenched in oil with absolutely no taste, a sirloin steak which hadn't been rested so it was chewy and oozed blood all over the plate. I never ever complain about food but I felt compelled to tell the floor manager whose response was a defensive "well what kind of steak did you order," when I told him how chewy it was. It shouldn't matter!! You're paying $35 for a steak, you shouldn't have half of it undigestable. Bitterly disappointed not just at the poor quality of the food but the lack of concern or apology from management.

A visually nice venue set inside a beautiful old building! I came here with a large group, however everyone was able to find something they liked which was a plus. Food consisted of the typical pub fare, with extremely exorbitant prices. What pub charges over $50 for a steak is beyond me. Food was decent, although nothing to rave home about, especially for the price. I ordered the fish of the day, salmon, which was kind of bland, cooked with no flavour or spices and was luke-warm by the time It was served to me. The dish was saved by the cabbage and apple salad and some decent chips. Everyone else liked their meal, but nobody really raved about anything. Was all quite typical for a pub, which is normally great, however if I'm paying for expensive food I would like to taste it. The price of fine dining needs to come with something wow.

The auburn hotel is a good place to chill out in the sun and have a few. Unfortunely their food is lacking (menu horrible) and also prices are above average. <br/>The environment however is perfect and their newly renovated beer garden is a great place to catch up over a few wines. <br/>Sports coverage pretty average for a famous sports bar
GMayRC
Super nice atmosphere and the staff are ace! enjoy my chats while ordering the best chicken parma I've had in Melbourne...<br/>staff in the wine room have great knowledge about their range. Which is awesome for a wine room! we'll be back

Great beer garden and courtyard.  Perfect for a Sunday session.  There's even a small sandpit in the corner to entertain the kids.  Although the food is not outstanding, it is not bad either and is classic pub grub.

Set within a beautiful heritage-style building complete with ornate Victorian décor, The Auburn Hotel is an iconic pub, restaurant and function venue in Hawthorn. The venue features stylish bar and lounge facilities, a recently refurbished dining area, a huge outdoor courtyard with retractable roof, plus a number of private function rooms for hire.

Went here for some drinks and the girl bartender was disgustingly rude. Wouldn't usually write this about someone but we just asked her nicely what other drinks the hotel had available other then wine and beer and then she said 'just spirits' pretty much yelling at us and then she walked away when there wasn't even any one else to serve at the bar. We went there for a good night and she put me off being there completely. <br/><br/>Ate our food and left so we didn't run into her again....<br/><br/>Good food and good hotel but stay away from the brown headed girl staff member if you want to have a decent outing.

Venue that has been proudly standing for almost 130 years. Renamed to its original "Auburn Hotel" name and a new courtyard to boot. Going to be a huge summer venue!!
The World Loves Melbourne
The name might ring a bell for most as The Auburn Hotel has been around for more than a century. Although it has been known as The Geebung Polo Club for the last 18 years, this iconic venue has recently undergone new renovations adding another chapter to its long and rich history. The revamp bring a more modern, crisp feel to the venue but thankfully it didn’t lose its character in the process. The ornate Victorian décor is sprinkled throughout the space from the antique chandeliers to elegant wallpaper and it contrasts beautifully with the stylish bar and lounge, the slick newly designed wine room, and the sophisticated dining area that backs on to the large outdoor courtyard.

A nice evening out with the knitting group I'm in because of the company. The lighting was extremely dull and the music too loud that made the patrons even louder. Good was delish however. Gnocchi with pumpkin and cashews. They catered to plain butter due to an allergy.

Update: To the executive chef, charging $9 for a small bowl of iceberg lettuce is an absolute joke. How you can get away with a $30 steak served only with chips is silly enough, but the salad was a huge disappointment. <br/><br/>The only pub I will go to on a Tuesday night in Hawthorn! The steak special for $15 is an unbelievable deal. The best steak night I've had in Melbourne and I would pay full price for the amazing sauces and roasted potatoes any other day. Beer selection is awesome and reasonably priced. Happy hour prices are fantastic as well. Staff are friendly and happy to answer questions. Has a lovely dining area, cozy back corner and a lively front bar. Can't wait to see the new courtyard as well!

THIS IS A REAL PUB. not a pretend one like many others in Melbourne. Great variety of beers both on tap and bottled. Great atmosphere that evolves throughout he day. Food is exceptional and staff are a warm friendly bunch.

After reading some mixed reviews of this venue before a friday evening out with friends, I ventured into the 'Geebung' with mixed expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised!<br/><br/>The inside looks fantastic, they informed us that they had recently undertaken some painting and renovating, but the charm of this old building remains. the crackling fires were lovely to sit by and my partner loved the addition of screens to watch the footy.<br/><br/>The staff were fantastic, Keaton and Molly who served us in the dining room were amazing, always there when we needed anything and eager to please with big smiles for everyone!  <br/><br/>The big, bearded American bartender who served us was wonderful, accommodating and impeccably mannered. While they do not have a cocktail list, he went out of his way to make me an espresso martini which rivalled any I have had and my partner said they were among the best Guinness pints he has had in Melbourne. <br/><br/>The food was good, not great. We ordered the popcorn pork belly and chips, the lamb rump and a porterhouse steak. The pork belly was a little on the dry side and the choice of sweet and sour dipping sauce was not expected. The mains were delicious, although the lamb rump was quite small, fine dining sizes I suppose! The only major issue we had was the lemon aioli is dreadful, almost inedible and having the option for a regular aioli would have been appreciated. Small complaints though from a fantastic evening.<br/><br/>Fantastic service from wonderful staff, decent, reasonably priced food and a pleasant atmosphere.

Not Bad, Not Great!<br/>The 'fine dining' section was fairly empty, however we waited an hour for our main courses. Vietnamese Pork Roll is nothing special but do try if you like soggy pork and pate mixed with what tasted like a cheese sauce.<br/><br/>We were provided dessert free of charge due to the wait which is nice. Somewhere good for the footy and a beer, not sure what happened to their kitchen though?!

Always been impressed by the excellent food, great atmosphere and super service. But it is not until I held a 18th birthday party for my daughter that I am truly impressed. The organization was smooth and everything was done perfectly according to plan. There were another 3 functions held on the same night, but the quality of the food and the service were not at all compromised. All my guests were truly impressed. The room was set beautifully and the atmosphere was great. The waiters were excellent. They were never intrusive but they were always there when you needed something or simply just to refill your water glasses. They were so friendly and always smiling as well. I will recommend it to anyone for any functions.

Disappointed. We have been frequent visitors to this pub over many years. The food has always been good quality pub food, not a great fine dining experience but good value, good variety and pretty good value. Tonight however we found that the meals are not the same as on earlier visits. When our meals arrived we could see that they were significantly smaller than in the past, the burger especially was around half the size that it used to be. The prices had not changed to reflect this.<br/>When we settled our bill we were told that there was a new menu, the only change seemed to be the size of the meals, the $23 burger was now served on a bun that could have been no bigger than 6cm in diameter and the serve of chips with this meal was also much smaller than for the other meals. I have no issue with the establishment wanting to cut costs or to upgrade its menu but the meal I thought I ordered and the one that arrived were significantly different. I would have preferred to pay a little more if necessary to a get a reasonably sized meal.<br/>I am sure we will find better value somewhere else in the area next time.<br/>It is with regret that I say I will not be back.

A fantastic venue with amazing staff!. We held our engagement party on level one and it was an absolutely fantastic night! The food was great and the staff were so helpful and obliging. We were looked after so well and all of the team at the Geebung made the evening stress free. I'd highly recommend having a function here!

60th birthday function. We recently had my husband's 60th birthday celebration at the Geebung Polo Club. The evening was a success, due to the fine organisation of both managers, Max and Andy. The room was set up as requested, the food was excellent and the staff most attentive. We would not hesitate in recommending the Geebung to anyone wanting to hold a special function.<br/>Merle and John

Great reunion venue and great service !!. The Geebung team were awesome in helping us organise our 25 year high school reunion. What a great venue ! we were allocated tables in the court yard although we pretty much took over the whole area. The staff were fantastic. They assured us that if the weather turned bad they would accomodate us inside. Fortunately the weather held out and we had a great time. Thanks Geebung staff and mangement. Can't recommend you guys highly enough.

Well Priced, Great Service, Awesome Menu. I'll start by saying I don't buy into the "foodwank" thing that heaps of pubs in the Hawthorn and inner Eastern Suburbs area seem to be (over)doing at the moment. I like pub food, but I also like interesting and different dishes. So, I'd read some negative reviews about the Geebung but had also been told good things verbally.<br/><br/>The Geebung menu is NOT pretentious at all. You have some really good pub staples on there, as well as a few non-staple meals that sound pretty delicious without being over-described, plus a few specials. We went on a Monday, and the dining room was fairly empty, but a word of warning for Monday diners is that trivia night is on in the back bar and you can expect close to 100 meals to be ordered around 7-730ish (so your meal might take a bit longer).<br/><br/>Our waitress was spot on - she was attentive and friendly, made suggestions without being pushy and knew her menu. We had the popcorn pork belly, scallops and tortellini for entrée. All of them were good, but the popcorn pork was REALLY good - the avocado sauce worked perfectly with it and had a nice but not overpowering kick to it.<br/><br/>Mains were a duck risotto (which was a special), pork belly, porterhouse and veal schnitzel, and we were all really happy with them. The risotto was on the lukewarm side, but this could have been due to the clash with the trivia orders. Taste-wise, everything was brilliant - my porterhouse especially was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and you could tell that it was a very good cut of meat. All meals were a good size.<br/><br/>We had a trio of sorbets and pannacotta for dessert - the sorbets were recommended by our waitress and all three flavours were delish (the lemon especially). Price-wise, the Geebung has kept things very reasonable, especially taking into account the quality of the food. You could expect to pay a hell of a lot more for a worse meal at any one of the self-proclaimed "gastro-pubs" in the area.<br/><br/>Pretty happy I went and checked this place out. Happy with the service, happy with the menu (plenty to go back for), happy with the pricing and really happy with the taste. Give it a shot.

We had a recent function for our sons 21st at the Geebung and we couldn't be more delighted. The staff were AMAZING, nothing was too much trouble. The food was great, the venue was perfect. We would recommend this venue to anyone for any function.

Slow delivery of food well over a hour... Staff were apologetic and got a free beer but food was uninspiring when it arrived
Lisa Holmen
Get your mates together for a few beers and enjoy the $14 special menu with pub classics like fish and chips and salt and pepper squid. Even if you’re not a trivia buff, you will be guaranteed a good laugh.

Located opposite the Auburn train station in Auburn Village, the 19th century Geebung Polo Club pitches itself as one of the better local pubs with lovingly restored interiors and an extensive dining area.

It's not that hard!. Terrible Chicken Parma... twice! At $22 a plate, there's no excuse for making a terrible Parma! I won't be back.

Amazing disappointment. I was delighted when I heard that my office Christmas function was to be held at the Geebung... An old haunt from my undergraduate days . Sad to say my nostalgic joy was short lived. Despite the fact that my meal was pre-ordered, it took over 90minutes to arrive. And I was a lucky one... Some took over two hours. In one sad scene, one of my colleagues was provided with the wrong meal after two hours of waiting... He took it... As he didn't know if the right one would ever be forthcoming.<br/><br/>The whole exercise was a debacle. It wasn't due to lack of staff from what I saw, they just didn't seem to be properly organised. A lot of the time, our function (involving nearly 40 people) seemed to be ignored.<br/><br/>When my meal arrived, I'd have to say it was a colossal disappointment - probably the worst calimari I have been served in over two decades.<br/><br/>I felt very sorry for my colleague who organised this debacle, in good faith. Clearly, the poor old Geebung has dropped precipitously since the time I frequented it in the 90s.

Great Joint. Surprised to read about bad service as I've been to the Geebung at least 10 times and have never experienced bad service, quite the opposite really. The food is great too.. I've had many good meals there and there are specials on so often so can also be good for those with a budget. It has a great atmosphere and I thoroughly enjoy going for a good meal or just drinks. Glad to have a great local like the Geebung
Andrew
Patronising party. Friday evening (10/10/14) I attended a private function at the Geebung Hotel. The venue was exceptional, the food was delicious but sadly the service was below par. I have never been treated with such arrogance, and disdain by an employee of the hospitality industry, clearly unaligned with managerial objectives. I empathise that a single employee does not represent the standards of the rest of the hotel, however the patronising treatment soured the reputation inherently.
James
Terrible service - ruined a great night.. On Friday night (10/10) I attended a private function at the Geebung Hotel. I've never been treated with such discontent and belittlement. The way I was treated with service truly soured my night and as a result I would never recommend anyone to hold a private function at the Geebung. As a hospitality worker myself I understand the difficulty of service of alcohol at a crowed event, however, the behaviour of the employee who worked the bar that evening cannot be condoned.
Sarah
Absolutely appalling service. Had to ask for a drinks menu that never came and then an hour later asked someone else and got it. <br/>Staff where submissive to anyone trying to get attention and just clearly didn't want to be at work. <br/>Had to find someone to ask for a desert menu after over half an hour of waiting. Then to see waitresses just sitting around doing nothing. <br/><br/>Lucky that the food was worth it
Gep67
Great pub food. Fantastic restaurant to take teenage boys- they love the food! Caters for all the family though with generous kids meals. The service was good too. All round a success
Sue
Magnificent service. The Geebung is one of our favourite places to go~ food is consistantly delicious.<br/>We suggested and then booked it as a place for a significant family celebration<br/>On an extremely busy sunday I explained to Manager Max how important this gathering was for our family and he and his staff went out of their way to enhance our dining experience.<br/>Our family will never forget their professionalism and their kindness.<br/>The food was as expected delicious!!!!<br/>THANK YOU <br/>The Longstaff and Mays Family

Not a consistent meal. We have been a bit of a regular here for over 12 months - my husband loves the steak and thinks it is one of the best he has had in a long time but I am vegetarian and the choices are not great. Had the salad last time and it was horrible - it was not fresh and the lettuce was brown and limp. Please put more choices on your menu - we will be waiting for a change in menu options before we return. My husband is sad but if the few options you have aren't fresh then we won't be wasting our money. Pity

We'll be back. Fantastic warm and cosy dining area in what was once the front bar and bottle shop. Tasteful fittings and furnishings and a good amount of space around the tables. There were a couple of prams in when we were in for dinner, but still plenty of space.<br/>Menu offers a wide variety of dishes. We tried some of the share plates - beef sliders, beef satay and cob loaf for around $33 which seemed pretty good value and can definitely recommend them all. Lovely apple pie for dessert as well.<br/> Service was good, and appreciated not having to order drinks from the bar, as is the case in other surrounding pubs. The Geebung could easily become our new local pub of choice.
Robert H
Period charm and reasonable food but service is sorely wanting. Lovely old Victorian era pub nestled in the heart of the inner eastern suburbs - exudes a grand gold rush vibe.<br/>Food on the night I visited was perfectly acceptable - it was Tuesday night 'Steak Specials' night and the steak I ordered was very satisfying, not great but what I expected from your average pub style menu.<br/>What really let the experience down was the monumentally slow service. The barman seemed completely flummoxed by the electronic till/register - I was told it was 'new' and that the staff were really confused as how to enter orders and tally them up<br/>This resulted in long long waits for meal and drinks orders and is a situation that needs resolving before opening for business on the day<br/>It was a quiet early weekday evening, what on earth happens when it's busy?<br/>A passing waitress, whom I requested some water from, pointed me to the barman, who was the sole deliverer of all drinks and meals orders - why couldn't she just nip behind the counter and get me a glass of water?<br/>Granted the staff were very friendly and amiable but more direction and training is required by management
Jason
Great meals and service at the Geebung.. A friend and I had a good feed which was complimented by great table side service at the Geebung Polo Club on a cold Sunday night. I had the braised steak on mash potato, which was a great winter meal. My friend had the angus beef burger and I was jealous as soon as they were served, as it looked great. Good venue if somewhat lacking in ambiance (it wasn't a busy night I assume).<br/>Highly recommended. Would be great a great venue for Sunday Lunch.
Amazon
Great old pub with cosy dining room and covered outdoor area. We loved the meals, great Chicken Parma and smaller share plates. Would highly recommend.

Worst battered fish in recent memory. When it arrived, the batter appeared dark and thick. Cut the fish and the flesh fell apart. The taste? YUCK! Don't know where they sourced it or how long it had been frozen but it was disgusting. Service was slow as well on a quiet day (table of 6, and we also paid for a meeting room for the morning too!). Other guys had chicken parm, which was okay. Really disappointed

Disappointing.... A previous visit some months ago had been very enjoyable and we were, therefore, keen to return. However, our recent visit was disappointing in all aspects - our meal took nearly an hour to appear and was only just ok. The entree price of $13 was a bit much for some of the offerings and no complimentary bread was offered (the only choice, if you wanted bread, was a mini cob loaf for $13). Service was poor (understaffing?). We wouldn't bother returning, I'm afraid.

Good steaks. Really good steak, Whole family had steak and all was cooked perfect.

Great food. Probably the best pub food in Hawthorn. They have great traditional pubfood- like a fairly sizable and delicious parma and awesome hand cut chips (wedges) also a top burger. They also have some fancier options. The dining room of the grand old building adds extra character to the meal. Staff were polite and offered good service without being exceptional.<br/><br/>All in all a really good experience.
David Egan
Great family lunch today in the dining room, kids menu was great. Sunday Roast great. Special mention to the friendly, efficient staff who made our lunch wonderful.
Briant0343
Very bad pub food. I have never given a bad restaurant review before this but her goes... Went here on A Thursday with some members of my extended family. The fish and chips were the worst I have ever had. Worse than last time. Inside the overdone batter was an oily white substance that might have been fish at some stage. My sister had a vege burger, which had a very thin slice of sweet potato in batter as the "burger" plus a slice of very thin supermarket pre-sliced cheese - she couldn't eat most of it. Unfortunately I did eat most of mine - I was starving by the time I got the food. My experience was made worse when I woke at 3 am feeling very very queasy. It's not good enough. You can buy edible fresh fish at reasonable price. There's no excuse for buying cheap packaged frozen rubbish. Then overcooking it.

AMAZING. My dude and I were originally going to The Counter for some brunch for the first time, though we were 5 minutes off the Kitchen closing, we were so hungry that we tried this place instead and I'm so glad we did! The staff were friendly, especially the dude with long hair, he was hilarious, and made our time here more relaxing because we felt like we were in a really fancy place. He even recommended our dessert which was A+! I forget what it was called but it was like a brownie with warm melted chocolate inside, with chocolate ice cream and fairy floss with hazelnut crumbs, it was amazing! I had the pork belly salad, and it would have to be the best pork belly I have ever had. My boyfriend got the specials burger which looked amazing, and he told me to try some of his chips which were excellent with the dipping sauce! We also had some amazing Coffees, as I am working as a Barista I am a Coffee snob, but they impressed me so much I bought 2! Would just like to thank the staff for being so polite, and the chefs for amazing meals. We have been living out of home for a couple of months and this is the best meal we have had since we left, my taste buds thank you too. Will deff be back!

Nice pasta! The food here is delicious. I ordered the pumpkin ravioli and it was one of the nicest pasta dishes I have had. The pumpkin puree went very well with the ravioli, pancetta and herbs. I would definitely come back again for this pasta dish. <br/><br/>Everyone else on my table also enjoyed their meals. They had the fish and chips, calamari, streak and parma and they all enjoyed their meals very much especially the chips which were very crunchy.<br/><br/>Updated June 10th 2016: <br/><br/>After over two years I finally returned to the Auburn Hotel! Unfortunately there was no ravioli on the menu which was what I had last time 😭 So this time I ended up trying the Mushroom Risotto. Usually I avoid risottos - haha it's always the death dish on MasterChef so I think it must be difficult to get a really nice risotto. I actually really liked it. I wasn't sure about the feta that came with the risotto. I wasn't sure if it was a good combination. My boyfriend's mum liked it though. I think have it in small doses - don't put too much on the fork like I did and overpower the risotto. Hahaha. <br/><br/>The highlight for me was definitely the dessert. I ordered a White Chocolate and Passionfruit Mousse. It was one of the best mousses I've ever had - and it was the first time I had a white chocolate mousse as well. I would recommend it! <br/><br/>Service was very friendly and professional. We really liked the waitress that served our table. She was new but very chatty and easy to get along with!

Great Food. Being a local I often find myself wandering down to the Geebung on a lazy Tuesday night for a steak.<br/><br/>I would almost say that their steak here is a hidden gem. How the Geebung is not counted among the best pub steaks in Melbourne I will never know.
Dlieberman
Liebo was there. Visiting from Sydney , have a roving palate 78yrs old and after helping someone to move in over the road , we all ,being tired and thirsty saw the pub over the road . I must say , what a wonderful surprise .<br/>The excellent pub fare was robust , tasty and certainly filled the bingy . A similar meal elsewhere would have been twice the amount . <br/>Service great , helpful and friendly .<br/>This pub will be revisited in the future .

Very nice indeed. Booked for 20 but only 16 turned up. Just loved the place. Very pleasant staff, GREAT food, comfortable surroundings and a nice clientele. Will certainly return.

Nice pub, good food, however a schooner of Asahi beer is $11.50. Wouldn't charge $11.50 for a pint of Asahi anywhere else.

If you want to wait forever for your order or not receive your order at all after waiting forever , then the geebung is the place for you. Given this place a few chances I don't know what has happened whether it's a new chef or what but each time lately has been a disaster!!!!

Great for families, staff are friendly. A favourite local spot.

Simple and tasty. Wandered in on a Tuesday night (which we were informed is "Steak Night")<br/><br/>I had the eye fillet wrapped in bacon (with chips), my friend had the chermoula spiced chicken with some mashed potatoes on the side.<br/><br/>The steak was cooked very medium (as requested) and I had it with the "smoked tomato butter" which came as a orange disk sitting atop the meat. Unfortunately I only found a very small chunk of bacon on the plate. The chips were thick and tasty, my only complaint being that there weren't enough of them.<br/><br/>The chicken nicely spiced (appropriately moroccan flavours) and cooked very well (not too dry), the roasted vegetables accompanying made for a very nice meal (and quite large).<br/>The mashed potato was indeed creamy and also salty (but not in a bad way).<br/><br/>For dessert (which I decided on before the main), I had the chocolate fondant and my friend had the "Trio".<br/><br/>The Trio - vanilla/vodka pannacotta, creme brulee and raspberry sorbet is excellent value at $13. The pannacotta (which I'm not usually a fan of) was a nice flavour and the raspberry sorbet had an excellent texture and a nice, understated flavour.<br/><br/>The chocolate fondant came with honeycomb icecream and crumbs. The icecream was not overly strong in flavour and worked well with the fondant. The fondant itself was wonderfully liquid inside and very tasty. If I was being critical, there was a hint of a burned taste to the outside of the cake, but it's barely worth mentioning.<br/><br/>Staff were attentive and friendly with a good knowledge of the gluten content of the meals. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the share plates section that is gluten free.<br/><br/>No significant criticisms. I'll almost definitely be back.<br/><br/>Update. Been back to the Geebung several times since the first visit. It hasn't been flawless but the staff handle problems pretty well. No complaints.

My family and I visited the geebung on a Monday night and were very pleased to find it was "$14 local's night". They had an extensive range of mains under this special including seafood, curries, gnocchi, and all of the classics. <br/>Quality or quantity was not sacrificed for the low price and the staff were very friendly and helpful when it came to making adjustments to a meal to avoid allergies. Overall a fantastic experience and we will be returning soon.

Birthday Lunch. For a relaxed atmosphere, lunch on Tuesday was just perfect. <br/>Service was faultless and the food was superior to any pub food we have had.<br/>I would have liked bigger oysters, but I have to agree with the chef : small and fresh is best! ( I never asked for his or her opinion ). I chose three platters, all seafood and my wife chose the calamari. Our personal requests(modifications) were duly noted and our meals arrived as ordered.<br/>Isn't it great when people want to oblige and get it right.<br/>Desert was prepared with the same love and care ( sticky date with ginger and macadamia ice cream on toasted brioche ), even my beer was great (served in a clean pilsener glass which held a head ! ) thank you.

Great parma's and Cajun chicken salad and an ideal place to watch the footy or knock back a few beers in the courtyard. Give the white rabbit dark ale or the Kosciusko pale ale a go.

Excellent pub grub. I had driven past this hotel a million times and had always wondered what it was like. I am disappointed to say, I wish we had visited earlier than we did last night! <br/><br/>We visited on a Saturday evening at 6:30pm with 4 adults and a toddler. Most tables had kids at them and I am guessing that most tables with kids had arrived at 6pm. <br/><br/>An extensive kids menu ($7.50 per head) was provided- which included ice-cream and topping and a soft drink or juice. The kids' lasagne was top notch and a large serve.<br/><br/>Between the adults we ordered a porterhouse, a bacon covered rib eye steak, salmon and a battered fish and chips. Well cooked and better than normal pub grub. Generous portions and well presented.<br/><br/>The waitresses were both lovely and friendly, and were receptive to the toddler. A football match was being played on the tvs in the bar, so the service was stretched. Both the dining room and tables in the bar were full. They perhaps could have put on a few more staff for such a busy night.<br/><br/>The Geebung Polo Club also features in the Entertainment book. We all commented that it was an extremely pleasant evening in a well chosen venue. The fact that the dining room was full, is an indication that they doing a great job.<br/><br/>We would definitely return.

What a wonderful experience! Booked for Father's Day, and had to add an extra seat at short notice. Was informed they were booked out but that it was not a problem. Arrived to a very spacious layout with ample room between tables (my experience on big days for trade like Mothers or Fathers Day at other venues is to 'pack them in', which makes it hard to hear and slows down service). Friendly hostess who had already set colouring paper and pencils for the kids (I was asked if there were any children when I made the booking, again, unusual and very attentive). Our table had the a mix of salmon, steaks and calamari. Very generous sizes, steaks were tender and cooked perfectly, and my father said the salmon was 'delicious'. Happy Father on Father's Day is always a good thing. The calamari is lightly battered and served with chips and salad. Doesn't reinvent the wheel, but tender and satisfying. Our table was well looked after by friendly but not overbearing staff, and our meals were all delivered at the same time around 25 mins after ordering. Extremely satisfied with my experience at Geebung from beginning to end and will be recommending.
Easygoing
Went for dinner last night, $14 specials as its Locals night, fires were roaring and the service friendly, the food was amazing, which was surprising as it was only $14 I had the turkey pie and it was a ripper, the chips were great too, definitely worth a visit, especially Monday nights

Went here on a Wednesday night without a booking and got a table without a hassel. Staff are friendly without being over baring. Rabbit ragu is a must. Good prices and food. Will return any day!!!

Myself and my family went to the Geebung on Good Friday, and was really impressed, they had a big range of seafood specials, service was attentive but not over the top, the battered oysters were a stand out for me, absolutely delicious! A really good local food option in Hawthorn, especially compared to some of the other pubs in the area., we'll be back ;)

Went in for a meal.. Rude staff.. Can't even make a drink right.. When complained we were given attitude .. We left with a bad taste.. Food is quite average!!
Mel
I came here for a friend's birthday and sat in the dining room. The food was delicious (the chips were especially crunchy) but the prices are too expensive for casual pub dining, though, they were fine for an 'event' outing. This is gastropub territory. Service was terrific and attentive; I was impressed that staff produced paper and pencils for kids to play with.
Louise
Had a great dinner here on saturday night, good service, great pub food, sat outside where they had an accoustic guy playing. Would definitely go back, and i highly recommend the chermoula chicken and eye fillet that me and my boyfriend had, both were delicous

Beautiful!!!. What a beautiful building, great staff and the best food in Hawthorn! They looked after us so well including my 87yr old Mother and our 3year old son. I will be telling all my firends about this beatiful piece of heritage.

Food is average. Whatever you do, don't go on a Sunday night unless you want to watch drunk obnoxious kids from the burbs get arrested or argue about who should drive home drunk.

Went to the 'Bung' tonight for steak night. My friend had told me about it and to get a great sized Rump steak, big chips, salad and an awesome mushroom sauce on top for just $15 in Hawthorn was a welcome surprise. I'll be there weekly from now on. Next on the menu....the Porterhouse!

I was happily surprised at how classy yet comfortable it was at the Geebung, very warm and welcoming environment. Service was very good followed with a wonderful steak dinner

Great Meals. Had some of the best calamari of my life here the other day. Highly recommended

Schnitzel night is awesome- best choc fondant in Melbourne

Went to the Geebung on a Monday night to find out that they had a fantastic selection of $14 Main Meals. I was also surprised to see the meals had not been reduced due to the price change. The Pie of the Day and Parma (usually $23) was an absolute standout. Cannot wait to go back again, maybe even play a game a trivia which was on.
Urbanette
Not worth the time or effort.. Why does the security here have to be so rude???<br/><br/>We were planning a Sunday night out at the Geebung but my male friend was by himself in the queue and he couldn't get in. Does the Geebung block men from entering at a certain time or make them wait to get in for some reason?<br/><br/>Will not be back. Horrible experience and a waste of time.

Geebung Polo Club Hawthorn. First visit to the Geebung Polo Club Saturday 18th Aug for dinner in the dining room - relaxed atmosphere in a lovely room near the open fire. Excellent service throughout the meal & beautiful food at a reasonable price. The steak & kangaroo fillet mains were a standout, followed by delicious sweets - especially the chocolate fondant with honeycomb ice cream & honeycomb fairy floss !<br/>A really iconic venue both inside & out.

Great night at the Geebung. We had a great night at the Geebung on Sat evening the food was great the Kangaroo was amazing and desert was outstanding.

Lunch. Went to the geebung for lunch about a week ago, <br/>Food was great, and service was fantastic, very professional outfit in the dining room<br/>Would come back here without hesitation! <br/>Congrats to the dining/lunch staff for the quality.<br/><br/>A++

Great menu and food - could improve on tap beers. Went to the Geebung for lunch the other day and ate in the front bar. Great menu with lots of nice things and found it difficult to choose. Shared two entrees - the squid and some parcels with lamb and chickpeas that were yummie. Had the butter chicken pie that came fully encased in pastry for a change instead of just a top, and served with mash. Enjoyed both although perhaps a bit small for its price. Other half had the special pizza (lamb) which had a generous and tasty topping but he was disappointed about the base not being home made and that they used a tortilla instead. Not bad food overall and quality versus price not bad either compared to some other pubs. Staff was friendly too.<br/>Disappointed about beers on tap though. Years ago we used to come here to get speciality beers but it is all standard stuff now (James Squire beers aren't special anymore I'm afraid since loosing their independence although they still taste good). A few Victorian microbrewery beers on tap would be great here.

Overpriced and very average pub food. Crumbed lamb cutlets were almost inedible. Lovely grand old building and a great place for a drink or a big Sunday afternoon with the pretty young hawthorn set but avoid the food!
Destie
Tuesday night dinner, was cozy & lovely spot. Tried their specials menu - seafood risotto & lamb shanks. Risotto was good though portion size was questionable, lamb was tender the beans were perfectly cooked. Chocolate fondant hit the spot. Sponge cake however could have been better

Dont go there.... I know that The Gem in Collingwood has great fish and chips but the GeeBung is so close to home- almost next door to us. I thought we should give it a go after reading about the James Squire Golden Ale battered fish and hand cut chips with house made tartare and mushy peas, on their website. Sounds good! The two meals and a pot and a half of designer beer came to just over $60.00. Hmmmm.... I thought, this had better be REALLY good! When the meals arrived the first sign of trouble was the colour of the two measly portions of fish on my plate. They were very dark brown, almost overcooked, I would say. The pieces were also very small- quite narrow and short and as expected, the flesh was dry. The chips were not chips but wedges and there is a big difference. Chips are crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the centre. These (and there were not many) were soft and wrinkled and O.K if you were wanted wedges, but very ordinary if you were looking forward, as I was, to fluffy, crunchy , 'hand cut' chips. And to top it off, the 'house made' tartare was runny. Off I went to the bar to get some shop bought mayo instead and to comment on the chips. The manager was shocked, as he had never had complaints about the "chips" before. I was the first to ever complain. The amusing thing was he asked "how am I supposed to make 'handcut chips' different to what is on the plate." "Peel them, cut them in nice even batons and double fry them", I said. What's the deal! Did he seriously not know? Here is how:<br/>http://gourmettraveller.com.au/handcut_chips.htm<br/> If the menu had said wedges I would have understood. Anyway, I asked for french fries as a replacement and he kindly obliged. As I sat gazing out the window across to the fish and chip shop where the same meal -for two people costs $7.00 and at the GeeBung it was $46.00 I realised that the GeeBung certainly met my expectations. My gut feeling about the place, base on two previous visits (to use the eftpos machine) was spot on. . . and i agree with one of the other reviews, shabby, expensive, grotty. But at least now I can rest assured that The Gem is the best value and quality for fish and chips! Go there!

GOOD PUB FOOD. Went on a Sat night with family (incl 2 kids), made booking but hardly anyone there. Pretty good menu choices but the duck I ordered wasn't available. Had yabbie pasta instead, was delicious with good amount of chilli. 1 child had eye fillet cooked perfectly med-rare, hubby's scotch fillet wasn't so good, bit more than med-rare. Kid 2 had curry from specials board, pleasant but a bit boring-specials were all a bit nothing actually. Kids enjoyed 2 games of pool after without disturbing anyone. Enjoyable evening overall & will go back with friends soon

Loved the newly renovated dining room. The antique mismatched furniture along with the fireplaces create a fantastic atmosphere. Menu is well balanced between fine dining but still has the pub classics. I had the pork belly and my wife had the confit duck . Both exquisite!

Had the "country beef pie" my friend had oxtail pasta. The food was ok, I think they may have tried too hard to make the food a little fancy resulting in flavours becomming neutalised. Service was friendly, beers were good.

Fancy pub grub. Had a weekend lunch in the casual dining area at the back. Looked like they had a more formal dining area at the front of the pub. Service was fine but you had to order your food and drinks from the bar (no table service). Food was pretty good. However, felt it was a bit on the expensive side for pub food but was well done. Had a good selection of pub favourites (like steak, parma, burger, chicken) along with a few more fancy items too (like pork belly, pasta). The chicken parma was great and the Gorgonzola risotto was nice too (just needed more salt and a stronger flavour). The kids meals were expensive ($9) but it was real food, not just something from the deep fryer (had to ask for the kids menu options). Easy enough to move around with prams and there is room for young kids down the back.

Overpriced pub grub. Not sure why people would want to eat here. The food is very average and slightly overpriced.

Went couple of months ago and ordered chicken Parma. Was good but little expensive for "pub food"! Will be going back though. Nice to sit outside and older crowd.

Went a few times several years ago. Large pub meals; not that cheap considering locality to uni. Floor, chairs and table were sticky and dirty with drink spills. Not impressed and no desire to return. Having said that a few years might have seen an improvemcnt.
