Review Ohsho Japanese Restaurant - Hawthorn

Bartoq R
To be fair, nothing wrong with the food. It’s good but it doesn’t excite me. I can get this in every so-called Japanese restaurant. One notable thing is they have a decent portion. Will I come again? Maybe not, unless they have something different.

Excellent Japanese. Beautiful and tasty dishes. Good service too. Been twice in last 2 months !

Lovely sushi/sashimi platter, delicious pork tonkatsu and beef dishes. Our only complaint would be that we were not told we had to be out for another booking with the bill arriving straight after our mains, so no chance for dessert. Maybe next time?

One of our favourite local restaurants. Their sushi are made with quality ingredients and well made. Sashimi are always fresh. Other mains are delicious too. Nice customer service and atmosphere.

Food was great, good environment and ambience. Just that service is a little slow.

I was excited to take my family here for a night of Japanese food however I found myself eating Chinese food. Don’t get me wrong, there was nothing ‘wrong’ with the food, it didn’t taste bad but, it just was NOT Japanese food. If this restaurant had marketed themselves to be a Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant I wouldn’t be as disappointed, but they market themselves as authentic Japanese food so I was slightly infuriated when we ordered pork ribs as a main, and it came out with Chinese Five Spice sauce. Why???! Chinese Five spice sauce is a very pungent traditional Chinese sauce, never in history did Japanese cuisine use this kind of sauce in their cooking so why is it used here😡? Also why is hoisin sauce used in their dishes? The dishes we’ve ordered should be cooked in a sweet miso sauce. Why change it?? And why is every dish resting on a bed of carrots and broccoli like a Sunday roast?😳 For a family of 5, the bill totalled $350.00 which was extremely expensive for Chinese food. Once again, there is nothing terrible about this restaurant, it’s just not Japanese. If you want authentic Japanese, go elsewhere.

What a chaotic mess service was. The girls serving, whilst doing their best, were severely understaffed and lots of things missed. No cutlery, dishes not arriving until we asked 5 people for over an hour. In the end we got up and left because getting takeaway would be a much nicer experience than the chaos this restaurant is. Hire more staff!

Food and service is great to begin with, taco & scallop were the stand out, but not impressed when matching with the price tag. Portion are small for the price paid. Dessert did not impress. Didnt left feeling full for $100pp with drinks

Insta: melbfoodie_mark
YT: MelbFoodieMark
** Check them out for more food reviews in Melbourne!
-
Absolutely worth a try - a Japanese venue located right across from Rivoli Cinema! Such a pleasant visit and staff were friendly and attentive.
We tried $54 pp Ohsho Tasting Menu that came out with Entree Kaiseki, Assorted Nigiri & Sashimi, and Eye-fillet Steak and Salmon Saikyoyaki. I really enjoyed Scollop Cocktail and Assorted Nigiris but mains were just mediocre. They weren't bad but I felt like they were subpar compared to Entrees and Second. Regardless, the eye-fillet steak was tender and juicy and the homemade mayo-teri sauce that came with it was just remarkable.
Overall, it was good but I don't think tasting menu was worth the price. It's unfortunate because based on the quality of Sashimi and Nigiri I had, I knew it could've been much better. I felt like they could've put more emphasis on nigiri & sashimi which were highlights of the dinner instead of mains (maybe, replace them with their rolls?). Next time, I'd love to visit to try their esteemed Osho rolls and Deluxe Sushi Sashimi Platter instead (about ~$70 in total in comparison to ~$110).

The sushi and sashimi were nice however we waited for quite some time for them to come out on a not busy day.

The mains are disappointing don't bother. The pork ribs and the duck taste unfresh.

Lovely Japanese food here at Ohsho, we enjoyed the sukiyaki beef very much although I would have loved it to be a bit sweeter for my taste.
Service was good and value was great!

Went for dinner with a girlfriend, the sashimi platter was incredibly fresh and delicious. The seafood there had a sweet aftertaste.

Dined here for the first time this Friday night. Quick easy reservation through Zomato, polite staff. We shared everything we ordered:
-Aburi sushi (5pcs-a bit pricey but yumm),
- Ohsho rolls- very good choice, about ten pieces I think
- Pork gyoza (5-6pcs?) was lightly pan fried and still juicy inside almost as if eating xiao long bao!
- salmon miso marinated: perfectly cooked but I wouldn’t say the taste was extraordinarily expensive
- soft shell crab ‘taco’

Overall we love this restaurant as all our orders were delicious. Price point opinions may vary but we were happy to spend $100 for the above food ordered (includes one beer).

Staff were helpful. The whold decoration was very charming.

We had a tasting menu first. The appetizers platter was fine. Oyster was a bit salty but acceptable. But the sushi sashimi dish wasn't pleasant. Sashimi doesn't taste fresh. For the small main we chose the eye fillets steak. It really overwhelmed me. Because if you add two bread on it, it's going to taste exactly like the Big Mac.
We also tried Sukiyaki. The udon noodle was already over cooked when it's on our table. The beef were very chewy, soup was too salty.
And at last, dessert didn't comfort me neither. Panacotta was too watery inside, icecream were fine but how wrong could it go.
I could understand the price by its location and decoration. But i really suggestion they need work on the taste of the food instead of pretty presentational only.

Came here for a few quick dishes before the movies. Was reasonably priced, service was friendly and efficient, and flavours were fresh and delicious. Would definitely recommend!

A thoroughly enjoyable dinner. Attentive and friendly service. The food was delicious - standout dishes were:
Takoyaki - super crispy outside with smooth creamy filling
Osho roll - great mix of seafood with the variety of flavours complementing each other well
Tempura -generous serving of tempura vegies with 3 decent sized prawns. Very crispy and satisfying
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Tempura
+ Miso Black Cod
+ Ohsho roll

This popular Japanese eatery was pretty busy on a Saturday night dinner service. We were greeted by pretty friendly front of house staff. The food was generally good. I particularly liked the tempura (great batter, generous serving, served with a good sauce), the miso black cod (buttery, tender, and super tasty with the reduced miso paste) and the ohsho roll (textural, tasty and morish). We also shared an assortment of sushi and sashimi, the reckon chips (this could be fried a little longer to a crunchier crisp) and chicken yakitori (this could use a bit more charring time). Pricing was above average, and service was efficient and friendly.

Lovely atmosphere. I would recommend asking to sit away from the door as the breeze would be quite cold. Staff were lovely. Only moderation I would have is for the sushi to be cheaper, in comparison to other places the serving is small for the price.
Eggplant was beautiful!
Darius
I came here with my partner. We had the taster set menu. It was very good. The combination of flavors, presentation and service are top notch. Serving size is on the smaller side.
4.5/5

A below average dining experience. The seared sushi and takoyaki is delicious. Don't bother ordering from the main meal selection (we tried the supearibu and the duck) which were horrible, overcooked and did not fit the japanese cuisine. Why these main meals are on the menu or why there's two pages worth of them is mind boggling. The staff are also very inattentive and left empty drink glasses on the table even after bringing new drinks numerous times and don't offer to refill the clearly empty water glasses.

Great Japanese fusion, great to see a Japanese restaurant making a comeback in Camberwell. Friendly staff remembered my wife and we have only been here once before, impressive!!

Teriyaki Salmon, the chilli fresh California roll and the tofu dish are some of our recommendations.

Very pleasant visit to ohsho restaurant. Excellent customer service.the Japanese food were very nicely plated and delicious. It was fresh and made to order.

The restaurant was nice and clean and the staff was always smiling and super friendly.

Food was amazing. Especially the tuna sashimi (very fresh and melt in the mouth) and the nasu dengaku. Beautifully presented too. Would definitely go again 😁
SydVeFood
Food was reasonable, and the prices appropriate. Service was polite and friendly, but our drinks arrived when we had almost finished our meal.

Lovely atmosphere and decore. It was quiet for a Saturday night, we went at about 8pm and only half the restaurant was full.
Staff were attentive.
We ordered an entree of gyoza and sushi and then ordered our mains later after this.
We had the teriyaki chicken California roll which came out quickly and was delicious. Very fresh.
We waited and waited for the gyoza and they hadn’t come so we ordered our mains. Our mains came out shortly ordering and there was still no sign of the gyoza. We asked and they came out not long after asking where they were, this was still after our mains. For mains I had the chicken udon noodles which was good, but didn’t have a lot of flavour or vegetables. My partner had the eye fillet steak which he thorough enjoyed, cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. Pork gyoza were also good. We also ordered the sticky rice pudding for dessert, I’ve never had it before so have nothing to compare it too but it tasted okay. It wasn’t very sweet and the green tea ice cream was yum.

Randomly came here before movies last Friday . It's beyond my expectation! high quality fresh meat with well presentation . Spicy edamame and Ohsho roll was my favourite , you won’t miss out . Recommend you guys come to try it . worth for the money

Absolutely worth a try. Friendly staff and nice decorations. Enthusiastic Japanese food, the presentation are perfect. The taste are fabulous and well seasoning, will come back for it again!

Unfortunately I will add this to my list of fake Japanese restaurants that we find here in Melbourne. As a discerning foodie, food was of a lower quality than my expectation and not prepared and presented in an authentic Japanese way which requires an appreciation of Japanese culture.

Dined here with my wife, the service was, good and very friendly the food was amazing sweet and succulent starters, We had the eel and Maryland duck leg. Both dishes where cooked to perfection.
Definitely will be back here again.

Delicious!!! The sushi, grilled barramundi and especially salmon saikyoyaki was great were all fantastic and staff is also too nice! Can’t wait to come back here, and i am really glad it’s too close to my home and the food was so delicious
MissGenWhy
Incredible food, the best that Japanese cuisine has to offer, IMHO. Would have given 5* except it was incredibly difficult to get the wait staff’s attention and they seemed inconvenienced and mildly frustrated at times. And the Nasu Dengaku was a letdown.

Whoops!

A very very busy Valentine's night, first staff couldn't find our booking refusing us a table then lost our food order 35-40 minutes in, servers not attentive, food served with very heavy hands, unfriendly with very poor communication skills.
Angry and pregnant wife was not impressed with all this.

BUT!
Food is excellent here, the Nigiri was excellent, Miso Cod was very very good. Gyoza is heaven. Once we reordered that is.... The food came quickly otherwise.
Price is very reasonable for the quality of food here. We're very impressed so we forgive you.

Good ambience, Delicious food, kinda drunk, not expensive. Yay!
Don't worry, we will be back!

Overall. Very good restaurant only to be let down by the inexperienced staff we encountered.

The Fo0die
Note that thefo0die.com rating is a 4.5 but in Zomato's rating system, it is closer to a 5.

Fo0die dined as a guest of Ohsho and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.

Despite the address reading Hawthorn East, the venue is on the border of Hawthorn East and Camberwell. The venue itself is located just opposite Rivoli Cinemas, along a strip of shops on Camberwell Road which is not too far from Camberwell train station and is close to (or even possibly a part of) the Camberwell Shopping Precinct.
Kualaupa
I have been here two times and it was quite good experience except main dishes. Floor staff members are friendly and kind but a little bit hard to communicate with them. Also main dishes were horrible, main dishes were really tasteless and just salty (I also had fried pork cutlet it was so tough to chew it and no source which was definitely from some Japanese market not homemade) however, if you guys try just sushi or side dishes, you wont regret about it.

Not a bad Japanese restaurant, same time, not that amazing. For price it’s ok. But definitely aestheticly pleasing. Wasn’t too convinced with the amount of 5 star reviews. So had to see it for my self. In all honesty would rate this place a 3.5 but it’s not too over priced like most places.

The gyu tataki wasn’t what I thought it would be. it was quite different to the description on the menu, although they used store bought sesame sauce, I thought it was an amazing combo, well executed. Ohsho roll had lots of flavours, tiny bit spicy but still enjoyable. Not much to say about the salmon carpaccio and sushi sashimi platter.

WIR? Not much else on the menu I would try but maybe I’d come and surprise my taste buds

Contemporary Japanese at its finest! A lovely space simply styled with a hologram at the entrance. What a great menu with so much variety wnd choices! All the dishes so well prpeared with flavour and presentation. Although I wasn't a huge fan of main the whole meal all in all was great with the dessert being the perfect way to end the meal.

Cant fault this place. Had a lovely dinner here w my girlfriend on a friday night. Nice vibe. Place was full but not too noisy. Food was very tasty and reasonably priced considering. Loved the wonton soup and Ohsho sushi roll. Across the road from rivoli. Thumbs up

Came here due to the high ratings. Can I just point out the fact that I think it’s kind of sus that 99% of people who rated this place a 5 Star only have one review? Or haven’t reviewed a place since 3 years ago?? Anyways, pushing that aside, I decided to try this place out to see if it’s worth the 4.7 Zomato ratings.
First thing first, I really liked the interior. The place is nice and bright and there’s nice little Japanese inspired artwork hung around the restaurant. I liked the marble counter top where the register was and the style of lighting.

Dish 1: Gyu Tataki - sliced seared tender beef and tangy ponzu sauce. I really liked the flavours in this dish. Very different to your typical beef tataki. I like the creaminess of the sauce mixed with the lightly seared beef and the vegetables underneath. Very flavoursome and delicious.

Dish 2: dish two took a lot longer to come out. We ordered the tataki salmon. I like how fresh the salmon was. It was nicely dressed in a nice fresh sauce however, it wasn’t anything special that I haven’t had before. There was a kick of heat which I also didn’t mind.

Dish 3: Osho roll which include a variety of different sushi’s - tuna, salmon, ebi, avocado, scallop and eel. I really liked the way they plated the sushi, looked too pretty to eat. The fish is placed on the top and they wrapped it with rice and a lot of cucumber in the centre. If you know me, I actually can’t eat cucumber so I was sitting there picking them all out. LOL. It was actually really nice. I would have preferred it if it wasn’t so spicy. There is a bit of spice but it’s nothing to worry about.

Dish 4: this is the plate that caught my attention to come here! The sashimi and salmon platter. Loved the way this was plated. Very aesthetically pleasing. I liked how they were placed all around the board in rows and each sushi or sashimi had a drizzle of sauce on top. All the sashimi were really fresh. I liked the nigiri. The sushi was average, nothing special, very mediocre. The scallops were cooked beautifully. Very silky and melt in your mouth. I liked the battered prawn and the mayo sauce. However, the board is slightly over price for what you’re getting.

Overall, I wouldn’t give it a 5. It would be a 3.5-4 Star. It’s very similar to a lot of other Japanese places I’ve been to. I felt like they can improve in many ways. I liked the flavours and the plating of each dish. I would recommend this place for people who like a some good modern Japanese food.

Came in on a Saturday with a 6:30 reservation. Ordered the set menu, and as the night progressed there started to be a small wait in between dishes. Highlight of the night was definitely the sushi and sashimi, fresh and amazing flavours! Tempura was quite good, however most of the table was not a fan of the main, as they were paired with boiled vegetables. Overall quite a nice place, and the staff were friendly.

I would give Ohsho 4.5

Ohsho was located within the busy Camberwell shopping district and could find free car park spaces closeby.

This Japanese restaurant was decorated with beautiful paintings, warm lighting and neat/contemporary interior design.
On the Friday night, this place was really busy so table booking was recommended.

Ohsho offers good selection of traditional Japanese dishes from sushi, sashimi, nigiri to small appetisers, main dishes and desserts.

#spicy edamame#-this bowl of spicy warm edamame was really delicious you just couldn’t stop eating them. The spices they used were fragrant yet with mild spiciness, it was a great company for beer!
#spinach salad#-beautifully presented chopped spinach salad with Japanese sweet sesame salad dressing. If u like sweet, you will love the salad.
#beef tataki#-lightly seared beef fillet on a bed of salad leaves and drizzled with sweet sesame sauce. The beef sliced very thin and tasted tender but still keep some chewiness. Personally I prefer less dressing so the true flavour of the beef will shine~ But still, it is a great dishes to have for entree.
#sushi&sashimi for two#-I was shocked when first saw the sushi and sashimi platter, it had so many different sushi rolls and sashimi. Definitely worth the money! They used good quality of ingredients so the sashimi tasted really fresh, and had beautiful texture. The sushi rolls were nice too, especially the tempera prawns;)
Even though Ohsho just opened few month ago, it started to build up good reputation within the community. You can’t beat the good food and good price. The new testing menu will be out soon, I am looking forward to it. Since it’s closeby, it will definitely be my regular visit Japanese restaurant in the future.

What a great dining experience we had at Ohsho! Excellent customer service and the food was absolutely superb!
The gyu tataki was light and tangy and the cocktail scallops were cooked to perfection. The highlight of our dinner was the Nasu Dengaku and the Miso Black Cod as it reminded us of dining in Japan! The food was very generous in portion therefore, a great place to share with a group of people and also reasonable in price. We will come back soon. Thanks for the invite.

Ohsho Japanese is located on Camberwell Road right opposite the Rivoli Cinemas. A fairly new restaurant in the area they offer incredibly fresh Japanese food.

With an extensive range of sushi & sashimi available, it was suggested we order the deluxe sushi & sashimi platter to start. The presentation of this dish was spectacular, arriving on a huge marble board.

The miso scallops were amazing, rich & creamy baked in a miso sauce.

The miso eggplant was a standout dish for both of us & one of the best eggplant dishes we’d tried. The eggplant was beautifully cooked, creamy & we loved the dark miso glaze.

The salmon tataki really impressed me. I’m not usually a fan of raw fish but the freshness of this dish had me hooked. Served simply with a ponzu sauce & fresh ginger & chilli, the salmon belly was the star. I’ll be returning to have this dish again, I really enjoyed it.

We also tried the miso soup, gyoza & spicy calamari dishes which were also delicious.

Finishing up our feast we shared the black sesame ice cream, one of my favourites & a nice end to our meal.

Ohsho Japanese served us up fantastic quality & delicious food, so good that it actually changed my mind about sashimi. I’d highly recommend trying this place, I’ll be going back again as we thoroughly enjoyed our night. Thanks so much for having us.

We came into this new Japanese restaurant in Camberwell just opposite the Rivoli and we were blown away. The food was outstanding and I highly recommend the following items :

The miso eggplant- this was one of the best if not the best eggplant dish I have ever eaten in my whole life, you could cut it open with a spoon and it was pure heaven

The aburi salmon- one of my favourite ways to eat salmon, slightly seared and still raw underneath , the sauce that went with it was divine

The salmon tartare- fresh salmon belly pieces in an amazing soy sauce , my friend who does not like raw fish devoured it.

We also got the premium sushi and sashimi board , the gyoza, the salt and pepper calamari and the creamy miso scallops ! All executed beautifully

For dessert we were so full so only got a scoop of black sesame ice cream each , the black sesame is very strong and creamy , exactly how it should be

Thanks so much for having us, we will be back for sure !

Excellent service, feel welcomed from the moment you walk through the door. The food was of a high caliber comparably to any high end hat restaurant. Will definitely be back for seconds!!!

Ohsho Japanese is a modern styled Japanese restaurant serving up quality Japanese food with modern contemporary twist. Their deluxe sushi/sashimi platters are stunning and all their menu items present well with quality ingredients and great care on presentation. Located right opposite the Rivolli cinemas the space is straight line modern with low toned art and a blackened mirror panels and an impressively lit bar.

Tonight we enjoyed Japanese bottled beer and I sampled the fresh Ohsho tap beer which was a fragrant easy drinking beer.

We started our meal off with the Tuna Tataki with its centrally styled tuna flower and radiating tuna slice. The ponzu sauce was really quite delicious and a little heat came in the form of ginger and green chilli.

The King Fish Carpaccio was another tasty dish, with radiating cured king fish slices hiding a a central mound of avocado and coated in a miso mayo. Flavours on this dish were more subtle than the bold tataki we had before.

We had originally planned to order the basic sushi/ sashimi platter but were so glad we got talked into going for the deluxe platter instead. The platter itself only just fitted on our table for two and came with salmon, tuna and kingfish sashimi, sushi rolls, fresh and torched nigiri, tempura prawn nigiri and scallops. I enjoyed the variety and the tuna sashimi was incredible as was the torched salmon nigiri. This was the most visually stunning dish of the night.

Needing a pause after such a giant platter we took our time enjoying our Agedash Tofu entree which my dining buddy had mentioned was one of his favourites from time living in Japan. This version was a somewhat modernised but still had the essential elements being a crispy tempura coated silky tofu, smokey bonito flakes and a pour over sauce. I loved the contrast of the tempura layer with the soft tofu beneath and imagine if the tempura had been a little thicker that contrast would have been even more enjoyable. The soy based sauce was flavoursome and quite salty.

Our last savoury dish was the Unagi Kabayaki. I really enjoyed the quality of this grilled eel which came out on a long dish and just fell apart over a bed of steamed vegetables. I have generally eaten unagi over rice in Don form and I actually missed having a little rice in the mix on this dish. For completeness I’m told this dish would traditionally be served with generous sprinkles of Japanese pepper (green stuff).

We finished off our meal with a scoop of green tea and black sesame ice cream which was a creamy and delicious finale to our enjoyable meal.

We really enjoyed the food and friendly service at Ohsho and appreciate being invited in to try their exciting modern Japanese menu.

4.6

This is a lovely restaurant that serves superior modern Japanese food. Everything works beautifully here. The restaurant space is lovely, only seriously good quality ingredients are used, the dishes are superb in every way, the wine list is great, the service is lovely. It all works superbly. We really enjoyed it.

We began with a superb rose from Pfeiffer of Rutherglen and continued with that wine throughout the dinner. This is a wine and a winery we know well from many past trips to the north east. The selection is indicative of the quality on the thoughtfully composed wine list. It’s not a long list, but it’s all good stuff.

Our first dish was the salmon tataki. This is a spectacular dish. The salmon is very high quality served with a sliver of chilli on top. The salmon melts in the mouth. We adored this dish and remarked that we’d come here just for this alone. It’s as good an entree as you could order. Next we had a delicately cooked scallop with caviar and ginger. It was small, two scallops only, but beautifully presented and very good.

Next dish was the deluxe sushi and sashimi. This was a stunning selection. Spectacular even. Beautifully presented. This kitchen knows their stuff. We loved every piece on this platter. Everything was good but the prawns were the stand out. We also had The Ohsho signature rolls. These too were amazing. They are beautiful rolls. They're are excellently assembled, delicate and enticingly presented. They pack a punch too with some lovely chilli flavour. This was unexpected but it adds wonderful length to the taste of the rolls.

I thought the tempura was good. The batter was beautifully light on the prawns but maybe didn’t work as well on the vegetables. The miso black cod was good to finish but was probably one dish too many. Nevertheless, I still had to try the black sesame ice cream which I love. The one here is a beauty.

We loved this restaurant. It’s just across from the Rivoli cinemas. How I wish I’d come here after a movie a few times rather than shuffle to the more prosaic restaurants directly across from the movie house.

A couple of other observations. It’s a lovely long warm long modern space here. We loved the predominant grey throughout which is very stylish. There’s nice decoration here as well. Overall the space is excellent and it felt contemporary, warm and inviting.

My compliments to whoever chose the playlist here too. I never thought I hear old blues standards in a sleek modern restaurant. You’d think Robert Johnson and Japanese food wouldn’t go together, but curiously they do. There were other great music selections on the night as well. The music choices were unexpectedly inspired.

Our servers were excellent here. Beautifully efficient and very gracious. They did a marvellous job with us and everyone.

We had a wonderful time. The restaurant succeeds in every way. We will definitely return.

Our sincere thanks to Ohsho for the invitation to dine here.

Father's Day dinner! Truly the best dining experience for Japanese cuisine! Their salmon and eye fillet steak are the highlights of the night!

Gonna come back for more dishes.

Food is pretty good and fulfilling , we just celebrate our winning of competition. The place is honestly my favourite Japanese place in the town. I have to order warm sake to try , tasty and perfect match for spicy calamari . Green tea ice cream taste great ! Crispy Gyoza also worth to try.
Good Food Good Mood
I had the extreme pleasure of being invited to Ohsho last night. Ohsho means king in Japanese and we certainly ate like one. Each course was exceptional in every way; fresh, high quality, flavourful ingredients stunningly presented- what could be better than that?

We started with salmon tataki which was beautiful with finely sliced ginger atop it. It arrived beautifully plated and really set the scene for the visual journey we were about to undertake. Next was the gyu tataki in ponzu. This gorgeously tender beef was lightly seared and had a vibrant pink colour which is just what I like to see.

We had the ohsho roll next which is somewhat their signature sushi dish. Bright and colourful this offered a selection of different things some with spicy sauces and others sweet. My favourite on here was the tuna but it’s a good dish to sample a bit of everything.

If you really want to sample a whole lot might I suggest the outstanding sushi and sashimi platter for two. This was pretty much my favourite sushi board of all time. It boasted two fabulous tempura prawn rolls and some crunchy salmon and avocado pieces. Note there is wasabi underneath the nigiri pieces which is traditional and something I’m not personally a fan of so if wasabi is no friend to you give the staff a heads up. We were so very impressed with this I would strongly recommend it as a must order.

After eating two appetisers and two sizeable sushi dishes we then had some entrees (entrees!), the chicken and veg gyoza and miso eggplant. Honestly this menu is so varied and is comprised of so many delectable items it was extremely difficult to chose what to order. The little dumplings were packed full of bold flavours and while the eggplant was more subtle it was probably one of the most innovative ways I’ve seen eggplant presented.

Then they suggested we try a main! We only ordered one and ended up having to pack it up to take home (they also do uber eats here) our excellent waiter recommended the spicy calamari though once again there were about another ten things that tempted. You are certainly spoilt for choice here. And with an ideal location directly opposite the cinema this is the perfect pre or post movie dinner spot.

I highly recommend this restaurant. Every dish is very exquisite and delicious, especially the sushi plate I have tonight. There are not only delicious sushi, but also fresh and delicious sashimi. This restaurant is reasonably priced, each dish will give you unexpected surprises, the environment is elegant and comfortable, and the service is very sweet.

Delicious. Great atmosphere with a modern interior. Staff were very kind and professional. I had the beef tataki, tempura, sashimi platter, black cod and an assorted matcha dessert platter. Everything stood out for me. The tataki was tender and flavoursome, the black cod was beautifully cooked, the tempura was light and crispy and I would definitely recommend the sashimi platter for groups!! The dessert platter was matcha heaven and the perfect finish to our dinner.

Overall, would recommend/10.

Visit there last night. The place itself was very spacious and light . I could say it’s a good place to have a great time. Attentive customer services , parking was easy to find at the back , I love their sushi platter , spicy edamame and wagyu steak. The vibe was chill and interior was dope. 100% recommend you to try this new place at Hawthorn .

A morden Japanese restaurant – the only one in Camverwell. Which probably has its distinct reason why it is rated high amongst the other restaurants by the pier. I noticed many reserved seating are for dine-in, lots of sake and alcohol to choose. Their food menu is simple but different with traditional Japanese food. I love the special wonton soup and beef tataki. I also will suggest the fried wagyu, it was soft. The surroundings of restaurant and customer service is also perfect.

visited ohsho again last night. Made a reservation on early dinner time , they were not busy on that time ,but getting busy when we left. We not really hungry , but we ordered one of their signature rolls which is dragon roll same as last time , because it was really amazing , the eel fish just be nicely torched and the chef selected creamcheese to be one of the ingredient inside the roll, that is so creative and attractive and definitely yum. Also the roll got tempura flake and thinly sliced red onion dressing with japanese mayo, some topping of tobiko. I am highly recommend this roll.

Had assorted sushi & sashimi plate. Ingredients were fresh and presentation nice. We had a large group so were able to order lots of different dishes to try. The Nasu Dengaku eggplant was delicious and well presented. The Yakitori chicken skewer, Takoyaki squid ball, Korokke potato croquettes and spice edamame or were very flavoursome. For mains we tried a Tempura and Udon noodles. Also good. One of the table guests knows the owner so you might think this review is tainted but I wouldn't be writing a review if I didn't like the food, so try it out and make your own judgement. Thanks

Interesting how all the 'reviewers' for Ohsho either have '1 review' or haven't made any reviews since 2016 etc or are these mates' reviews? Just an observation...

Food is good but not a 5 star rating for sure especially for this side of town. I did enjoy the chicken yakitori as the meat is tender and not overdone.

Got reasonable choice of wine/beer/jap sake on the list which is good. Ambience and decor is nice as it's a newly open joint.

It was a quiet night so it's expected that we get attentive service. Location is right across from Rivoli so good for a bite before/after the movies. Not in hurry to be back but as Camberwell has no other 'Japanese' restaurant, might pop in still.

I’d recommend soft shell crab hand rolls and the soy beans taste special in a good way, not sure what spice but yum. Also nice environment and staff

Had really nice dinner at Ohsho tonight. I loved the ambience of the store. The ring lights above the bar really accentuated the clean, modern design of the restaurant. Totally in love with how they designed the place, and also the small Japanese decorations and the art pieces in there. Food-wise I really recommend the sashimi! (Small tip: Entree size sashimi only has salmon and tuna, if you order it as a main you'll get kingfish as well.) Staffs were helpful and friendly, overall a pleasurable experience. Will visit again soon for more :3

We ordered Sashimi and Spicy Edamame for entree, Salmon Saikyoyaki and Black Cod for mains. Sashimi was very fresh and soft, really loved it. We do prefer the Salmon Saikyoyaki over the Black Cod because the cod had more of a sweet taste compared to the salmon, but it was a good experience nonetheless. Definitely coming back again to try the steak!
