Review Elgin Inn - Hawthorn

Kayne Gray
Came down for long overdue meal since moving in locally. The parma was pretty lacklustre. Parma, pint and gravy sets you back about $43. I'd give the parma 6/10, could of been bigger. Gravy was 10/10. I guess it averages out as "just alright"?

Staff were quite rude and poorly trained, treated our 4yo daughter as if she was nothing. Not at all suited to be working in hospitalty. Ordinary pub grub but still managed to find ways to stuff it up. Steer clear. Hopefully a new licensee can rejuvenate this place; its location deserves better.

Love this place, staff are super friendly. We hosted my Step Sons 21st birthday party upstairs and great fun was had by all.
Jeffrie Trika
I heard the food is good now. Wednesday Trivia is fun. Good reds on their wine list. Must come back again.

Lamb back strap was nice, but a little small. The chutney they had with it was great. The pumpkin gnocchi was good however they used way way too much garlic which overpowered it and made it very difficult to eat. Not too bad, prices were a bit expensive and the portions were on the small side.

Great customer service and place was lively. Good for footy lovers as have so many TVs to watch it from. Good for families with kids and good kids meal option.

Food was delicious, came out quickly. Staff excellent. Vibe calm and relaxing. Would definitely visit again. Thank you!!

Lovely staff great food but We wont be back if we have to pay $25.20 for 2 pints of Carlton draft when we can go down the road to the Royal Oak Richmond for $7 pints all day Goodbye

I'm a local resident of Hawthorn living on Elgin Street for almost 4 years. I've been to the "Elgin in" numerous times and been pleased with the service. Today I was actually disgraced with the treatment and service I received today in particular by the older female waiter with white hair. I'm so appalled I'll mostly likely never go back and encourage everyone I know to never visit your venue. Turned up today to watch the Connor McGregor Vs Mayweather fight with my partner only to feel not welcome when your waiter aggressively argued with me after ordering my food in a take away pizza box despite the venue being jam packed and no seats available. She quote said "take away means take away next time take your food and leave". Don't know who the hell she thinks she is but next time I'll happily use the facilities and spend no money like most other people did today. Be happy I even spent money absolute joke if you ask me. I deserve an explanation at the very least...

One of the best corner hotels left in Melbourne ! The Publican is slightly different! But OK after a couple of waters!
Chris Hill
The food is great here, one of the best value steak nights in the area. Love the "hidden" rooftop as well, great place for a few drinks in the sun, with really friendly staff.
Hayden Coulson
My best pub. Bring back the $6 Furphy Schooners! Very friendly staff, Anna second to none!
Selina Anne Loveday
Worst food ever - would not go back? It’s time they did a major overhaul of the place. Very disappointed

Just ordered a margarita pizza, took the first one back coz it had no napoli sauce or basil.. 2nd one came. Still no napoli. I only ate it coz I was ravenous and I could not be bothered waiting for another. Not your best work chef's. Easiest pizza to make and you couldn't.
Chris Lesniak
The Elgin was great especially the kindness of one manager who organised an area so we could watch the Essendon Carlton game in comfort. It was no trouble for him.....a big thank you. Would highly recommend this hotel.
Paul O'Doherty
The service was good and TV screens to watch sport were in abundance but the food was terrible. Would not eat there again.

Grate pub. Enjoyed both the Maine bar & up stairs. City pub with a real country feel just like home👍🏻🍺

A big shout at to the people at the Elgin. Food was fantastic, staff very helpful and considerate. Anna was amazing and so very friendly. Thank you for a lovely night

Trivia was great on Wed night until your terrific trivia host got the answer to the raffle question WRONG! Lisa McCune 10 Logies! Rove 10 Logies! Give Lucy the money!!! Feel free to contact me to rectify it.

Great family friendly hotel with reasonable prices
Vic Nicholas
Always look after me. Good people and the parma's are simply sensational.

Had Risotto last time and Salmon this time. Was very happy both times. Great sports bar down stairs and awesome open air upstairs. Will definitely be back!

Some pubs hit the mark food wise & service wise but unfortunately this one didn’t quite make it. A pre-booked large group for a Sunday family lunch was obviously too much to cope with despite the restaurant not being overly busy. The menu looked pleasing with the usual elevated pub grub, including wood fired pizza. We began ordering meals a bit after 1pm and the final dish arrived at 3:15. After an 1hrs wait with nothing on the table, one of our group got up to investigate the food situation. They informed us they wanted to bring out everything together. There were 18 of us! How did they expect to get all those meals out together? It didn’t happen obviously. It was also revealed there were only two hands prepping in the kitchen. The meals started trickling out one or two at a time. I waited 1hr 20 minutes for the ‘special’ pork belly served with sweet potato mash & bok choy & a sickly sweet plum sauce. The pork arrived smothered in the stuff. I hoped the crackling was still crisp but I drove my knife right through flaccid fatty skin. The waitress observed & kindly offered to return it. I possibly could have stabbed her in the hand had she attempted to remove that plate away from me because I was just so hungry after such a long wait (just kidding). Way beyond ‘hangry...’. Instead I graciously declined and said I needed to eat now. The belly pork appeared to have been reheated in a microwave. The meat was extremely hot - not the sort of heat attained from a conventional oven or warming lamp. Hence the limp crackling... No seasoning to the meat or veggies but just the all pervading taste of the sweet plum sauce. Perhaps they need to remove the word “Special” from the menu. Around the table the complaints were a dry overcooked duck breast, dry & hard polenta, way overcooked barramundi fillet, dry pan fried gnocchi, an overly ‘wet’ paella ( wetter than risotto...) and a doughy base on a pizza. Obviously something was not right in the kitchen on this day or they were just not staffed sufficiently to deal with a large group as well as the other diners. Maybe the menu was too ambitious and required more preparation than they could manage and perhaps simpler traditional pub food would have been more manageable. Sorry, its a miss from me.

3.5/5
It was time for a pub meal so we ended up at the Elgin Inn Hotel on Burwood Road.

As it turns out they have specials on most nights and happy hour on all their beers yay!! So I tried a Brunswick Black Lager which was very drinkable and even more during happy hour lol

Inspired by the pubs specials we both ordered a chicken Parma based solely on the Zomato rating of 4/5!!! Yes I know I know... lol

The chicken parmas were alright, the salad fresh and dressed. My chips were primarily soft unfortunately. Overall a little above average for your standard parma and reasonable value too.

The barramundi was popular and it did look good.

The service was good, but don't expect table service, this is a pub. But the service was friendly enough.

Overall I'd be happy to go back.

Such a beautiful venue. Upstairs roof top is quite nice. Heaps of lighting and quite cosy. Sports running in the background. Great drinks and atmosphere.
Lisa Giles
Not only is it a good pub, I also really like the food. They do good quality pub meals, and if you get the specials it makes it very affordable as well! It’s one of my go to options for when we want to watch the footy at a decent pub while eating a tasty dinner; as there’s only a few places that offer both these qualities!
Espy Eats
The only advantage I can possibly see in having to work back and then missing my train by about a minute is I had over twenty minutes to fill in before the next train home. Just enough time for a walk up from Hawthorn station and into the Elgin for a very quick pint. I love this place but have only ever come for a drink here and there and the chips... I pledge to come back for a real meal sometime soon when I have a little more time on my hand
Swanette
Fantastic place to eat too many delicious choices to select😀. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Very relaxed place to be on a sunny afternoon. Will head upstairs next visit

The menu offers the whole bunch of great gourmet foods. Very popular restaurant for families with kids. It’s packed but still has the nice and comfortable feeling
Hungry Jeweller
A truly solid place to have a decent feed. You can't go wrong with their fish and chips, made with thin pieces of King George whiting. Their pasta is pretty good as well, I've enjoyed their pumpkin gnocchi.
Petal Loves Food
The Fettuccine with mushroom, rockets, and cream was fantastic. Service is prompt and efficient. Food also made within 15 minutes. Ambience an old pub feel. We sat on a table and was asked if we could move as the group of men have been sitting there for the past 30 years they said. Good on them, love the strong sense of neighbourhood feel.
Nomafoodic Chipineats
Been here a few times. The fish & chips and steak is pretty good here. Good ambience, friendly service. Wednesday nights are packed from Parma night.
Good Grub ... For the love of Monday Night $16.00 steak ...This corner block, old style, spacious, grand looking, one of the most comfortable pub to venture and hangout do served good grubs, sorry food.At $16.00 for a medium-rare Porterhouse, chips, salad and Pepper sauce (other sauces available too), cooked well, they did it well. Although the $9.00 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir was a disappointment.
Order at the counter and the kitchen is very efficient in making delivering your order. At that rate is a good grub. JT-16/04/2017.

Lunch deal is good at $12. Tried calamari salad, Shepard'a pie, fish and chips, pizza and enjoyed it. Pasta and eggplants was good too. The upper floor is pleasant but careful with those high chairs. Some are so rusty that it snaps. A friend was sitting on a high chair when it snapped and he fell off the high chair. We had a good laugh thinking back but thats just because he didn't hurt himself.
Kat
Arrived around 9 on a Sunday night. Quiet. Lovely staff. Cheap food and drink. Had 3 drinks each and 2 pizzas ended up around 50$. Will be returning

The service was fabulous and they were happy for us to taste test the beers before making a final decision. It is one of those pubs that make you feel very at home. Another highlight of the Elgin Inn is Copperhead Road which is a 1920’s inspired rooftop bar that serves prohibition style cocktails.
Theknifeandforktalk
Always love this place for a simple classic pub meal! Especially love their Monday night $15 porterhouse steaks! You have choices of multiple sauces and different sides and the steaks were just cooked perfectly. Always such friendly service! Wanting to come back for their pub classic night deal and many others as well. Food is quality and quantity!

Visited the Elgin last night at around 5.45pm on a quiet Tuesday night. Sat in the upstairs courtyard outside and ordered food at the upstairs Bar from an efficient waitress who was not friendly but not rude. A smile would have gone a long way.

They have the vibrating pager system when meals are ready which was given to us but meals were brought out by the waitress.

Calamari entree ($15) was generous in size, super tender with what seemed to be a home made tartare sauce which was tangy and yum.

My parma main was massive if just a little dry (I think it was left in the warmer too long) but overall very good with great chips and good salad. My son's chicken schnitzel with mash, coleslaw and gravy was good too.

The mains took a little longer to come out than expected (15 mins after entree was finished). Tuesday night is Pub Classics night where Parma, Fish and Chips, Burger etc...are $15.00. Great value. $6 for schooner of beer of the month "Melbourne Bitter".

Overall this is a solid pub with good food in a great location. Perfect for any occasion. The upstairs bar area looks particularly good for a private function. It is indoor/outdoor with the bar serving both.

Worth a go for sure. Tuesday nights are a bargain.

Whilst my hubby wanted to keep driving past, I assured him there had been some positive comments on Zomato. Feeling as though I was to be again proven wrong we dined in with our daughter in tow. The venue was a bit dark on the inside, but thankfully no poker machines etc (that I noticed). Based on the comments below, I went against my "Don't order a parma at a Pub" rule and went with the parma. My daughter wanted kids nuggets and pasta. She went with the pasta, and ate 1/3 of my chicken (it was that big). And when the parma arrived, you could tell immediately, it was a proper chicken breast fillet. It had been finished off in the pizza oven to melt the cheese, so it didn't arrive slightly cold from being just under a grill. And it was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside, tender in the middle. My daughter commented that her pasta sauce was the best she'd ever had, and I tasted my hubby's special spicy pizza, which was suitably spicy. All in all, a night when we finally leave a venue without thinking "wish we had've gone to ..... instead" - which unfortunately happens more often than not.

I thought it was just a typical pub dinner and the food turned out to be a surprise.

The lamb was beautiful. We had chicken parmigiana, lamb shank, and spring lamb cutlet.

Chicken parmigiana was above average, which was crispy outside and tender inside.

The lamb shank was excellent. The portion was generous with 2 small to medium sized lamb shanks with plenty of sauce and mash potatoes. They were so tender that really fall off the bone.

The highlight was the lamb cutlets, which were cooked to absolute perfection. The pumpkin puree was so smooth that my baby finished in a record time.

We will definitely return soon.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Another visit today, they had a Tuesday special for $15. We had a chicken Parma and lamb shank pie, they were huge and delicious. What a steal! The best lamb shank in town.
PW Lou
Stopped in for a quick pub dinner. The food did take quite a while to come out. I was told that the steak was okay. I had the lamb shanks which were okay. Might have ordered the wrong food for the pub reading the previous review. Most probably would not be rushing back in a hurry.

I went on the a Thursday Pizza night..loving the happy hour drink prices...$6 pints and $4 wine. Had a meat lovers pizza which hit the mark.
Foodlover12
Great night here! We had a group of 25, the food came out quick, it was tasty, reasonably priced. Pizza's were yum, The desserts were basic but good. Everyone loved the wines on offer, they were even good enough to let you try it before buying.
Thanks so much for catering us all.
Panda
I was expecting the typical pubby food and was surprised when it the salmon and penne seafood we ordered for main taste better than we thought.
Daniel Daley
Without a doubt the worst customer service ever! The guy in the pink shirt on Saturday night was the rudest person I have ever come across. Will never be back!
Thisisme
Stopped in for a meal on Sunday, I had the chefs pasta special which was a sort of carbonara with a garlic sauce that was more oily than creamy. It was delicious, big serve with lots of good quality bacon. Hubby had the risotto and said that it needed a bit of bacon through it, I passed over some of my bacon and he loved it. Very happy and we we'll be back. One of our favourite pubs in Melbourne.
Martyn
Came here with no expectations but left having had a very enjoyable pub meal, my wife had the Salmon and myself the Parma, both off which tasted very fresh and tasty, would happily come back again!
Daz
Headed there for lunch with a mate today. Parma was defrosted and soggy, grilled fish and chips was average. This was not a fresh pub meal we expected. Disappointing.
Gavin Southern
Had the Parma (Capricosa). Lucky we were here on a Wednesday night for Parma night.
Good size, home made style fillet. Great crispy chips and a colourful salad with NIL tomatoes. Hence, didn't eat the salad.

We also had the grilled fish and chips. The fish was nicely cooked and the chips were very crispy. We liked the presentation of our food. The salad looked like effort had been put into instead of just the boring lettuce, tomato and onion.

Love this local pub! Cosy downstairs area and upstairs is terrific with its unique outdoor drinks area. Food is better than your typical pub feed & the staff are friendly and welcoming. Always return here whether it's with family or friends.
Cheezles
Your average pub grub but nothing wrong with that when your after a steak and a beer. Wood fired pizza's looked the good as well. A bit on the pricey side but has a good family pub feel
Burtonpunch36
Nice area. Nice new rooftop area however the food tasted like bark. The cheese had not even been melted on the parmagania, might I add under cooked. To add the chips added were shoved into the plate from the freezer they were that cold and undercooked. Not impressed rookies
Jenny
Don't come here for the food...... Staff we not very friendly. Food was pretty crappy. I ordered the zucchini fritters, on a bed of mixed lettuce and coleslaw with a side of tzatziki. The fritters were shaped like... arancini balls and tasted bad. The 'mixed lettuce' was purely rocket leaves AND there was no coleslaw. Bad meal. The rooftop bar is nice... that's about it.
Yummy Bag
At the Elgin Inn today. Nothing short of appalling. Staff were under the pump, and busy but that is no excuse for being blatantly rude. Food was dreadful, all packaged food, banged in the oven and served by people who wanted to be anywhere except at work. NEVER returning to this local!
JiroMiki
The ladies toilet on the second floor has a rippled glass window that doesn't provide any privacy whatsoever when sitting at Gibson's Wine Bar opposite. Free entertainment at Gibson's!
Mike's Reviews
If you are going to this pub don't forget to take your appetite. They have a great menu with typical pub fare and many alternative choices. We were a table of 12 and I did not hear one complaint. As I said, take your appetite as they know how to fill the plate. A great Sunday lunch.
Getaround
Worst meal. Cold and limp. Bar staff seems to have changed and aged. Just TERRRIBLE. No redeeming qualities.
Special Delivery
Good food, particularly pizzas however there are some staff members that need hospitality training.
Anthony Norwood
Just had a Chicken Parma and is wasn't very nice, too many chips and not enough Parma, a substantial lack of sauce and the cheese was like plastic. The salad was very average as well
Michy M
Great place but terrible ribs!. Service and pub are great but the ribs are horrible for $25.50.. You get 2 ribs that look like they have been dried out in the freezer prior to cooking. Salad dressing not good either.. Chips were average but was ok with gravy. My advice is get anything other than this dish!!

Good pub not trying to be something else. Have been to the Elgin a few times over the past few months and really enjoy the atmospehere. It's a real pub pub and it's not trying to be anything else. It's got sports, beer, pub grub and loads of locals enjoying their time. Parma was huge, couldn't finish it. The fish n chips is also good. good eye candy around without the pretentious vibe....
Akm
Standard local. The food is fine, just your standard pub food at reasonable prices. Yeah it's not gourmet, go to a fancy pub if that's what you're after. Always friendly, great place to watch the footy as gets a good lively crowd. It has sports betting (yuck) but thankfully no pokies...please don't EVER get pokies! It will ruin a nice locals local.
Sirlunchalot
Lamb pizza yum. Been here with friends a few times for drinks and a bet. Good old school locals pub lively when the footy is on especially when the hawks are playing interstate. Had the Lamb pizza here recently and really enjoyed it (whats not to love about slow cooked lamb shoulder?) New terrece area upstairs is a great spot to have a drink and soak up the rays. If i lived closer i would be here alot more often. Parmas looked good plently of people eating while we were there and everybody seemed happy so not sure why there are so many poor reviews on here. I like it!

Love the local. You can't go wrong at The Elgin. Great pub grub, friendly attentive staff and fantastic rooftop to enjoy the Melbourne summer. Every time i come here i walk away feeling like a local and having really enjoyed my time there. Thanks to Jeff, Chris and Anna who always have smiles on their dials. Will be back again and again

Great Parma. I come here regularly just for the Chicken Parma. It's the best i've ever had (i've tried probably 30 other places). If you're a parma lover like myself, you really need to try this place. It's an above average size and the flavour / texture etc is perfect. Decent serving of chips and a very tasty salad. Although they change the salad a fair bit so i cant guarantee the salad quality. As far as the rest of the food goes, i really dislike their nachos. Then again, i think most places do terrible nachos, flavourless and a really plain cheese. Their steak is ok. Decent, but it wouldn't be hard to find better or worse elsewhere. My girlfriends a vegetarian and she doesnt like coming here as they don't offer much in the way of vegetarian food. She asked them if she could order just a salad by itself or to order a beef salad without the beef but they weren't very accommodating. So if you're a parma lover, DEFINITELY come here, otherwise, meh.
Missdelish
Passable. On a sunny afternoon, nice to sit up on the terrace with friends. Otherwise, you're inside with the sports betting and live coverage.

Wood fired pizza is passable. Moroccan chicken special not particularly flavoursome but not terrible either. Problem is the place pales in comparison to the wonderful little wine bar next door which was unexpectedly closed, landing us at the Elgin. Not recommended unless you're out for a boozy cricket/footy/rugby day with mates....

Good Pub Food. Have had dinner here a couple of times, always good consistant pub food. Last time i had the beef wellington which they had as a special and it was very nice. Service is ok, but its a pub so you cant expect too much. Rooftop area is a nice place to eat if you dont mind the cold. In some it would be delightfull.
AliP73
Very average pub meal. I Had lunch at the Elgin recently for my dad's birthday. I had not been there in a few years and the food was okay last time. The food was really average-probably why we were practically the only people there for lunch in the large dining area and it was a weekend. Generally its quantity not quality. I ordered medium steak and veg. The steak was huge, med to rare and ok, but not that tasty. The vegies were basic and terrible. Mostly undercooked. I really could have made better at home and saved my money! The other meals at the table were similarly average as was the coffee. I think in an area of many restaurants and cafes, this place needs to lift it's game.
Diner80
Love going for drinks, great location and food is ok. But the service can be terrible and so rude, particularly one woman who works there regularly. Exrtremely and unnecessarily rude.
Brando The Pig
$12 Parma nights on Wednesday. Decent feed but nothing special. Good catch up place mid week if u r a local

Very enjoyable gnocchi.great atmosphere!
Maccaboy
Possibly the best pub of inner-eastern Melbourne. Sensational atmosphere, combined with all essential pub elements. Friendly staff and patrons, classic and delicious pub meals - priced reasonably, with regular specials nights. Great beer\wine selection to enjoy a quiet drink on the deck or inside the cosy interior. Top class.
Ozmum
Regular haunt. Whenever I'm in Melbourne I go to the Elgin Inn as we stay around the corner.
Staff is friendly and attentive and the food is good pub food and served quickly with a minimum of fuss.
I appreciate their gluten free choices - the steak sandwich is GF without the bread and they are happy to serve it that way.
BH
Average. Had an okay chicken parma there, very oily aftertaste and bread crumbs, and a bit of salad. The outdoor area is nice, which is why I went there, but average and forgettable food.
My wifes wrap was no better. Steer clear of the deep fried stuff I reckon.
Blacklisted
I wish my local pub was better but the Elgin does sad and ordinary food - on par with 1980s Perth-standards. Why do loads of people still go there? I don't get it.
