Review Aangan Express - Hawthorn

Riya Thakkar
Very pathetic experience recently . Firstly , this was just food colour and literally tasteless, literally no salt in the food. Inspite of specifying while ordering to make the food spicy it was just bland. The quality not at ll upto the mark . The waitress couldn’t really process what we were saying. Eating here was a dumb decision.

One of my best experience in aangan express. Food was amazing and service was quick. Staff was very friendly. Must try food.

I ordered my food on the phone and the lady said it will take 30 minutes. I arrived exactly 30 minutes later and 2 ladies were there and 1 lady said oh maybe another 20 minutes?! When i asked why it’s taking so long? She just showed me some receipts and said we’re busy!! There was not single customer eating in. I counted there were 5 receipts on the counter. Then the 2 ladies started blaming each other and looked like they were fighting in their language. Absolutely zero customer service. Then 1 lady asked me you want to pay now? i said well i would like to know first how much longer i have to wait please? She said not sure then she disappeared. I asked the other lady if i could cancel? She said yeah! These 2 girls had zero care about the shop. Aangan used to be a very good restaurant with excellent customer service. Unfortunately you can see the shop is a bit dirty and the terrible customer service is enough to make me go somewhere else.

We had great experience today’s dinner at Aagan hawthorn express. It was very delicious, especially the chicken curry, palak paneer I loved it. I ate way too much. I would really like to compliment the chef, The dinner was outstanding! We had a great time, thank you.

We have been there , one of the Indian restaurant at aangan hawthorn today. We loved the food and service by the front staff. Food was so yummy. I like the entrees veg Manchurian and chilli panner.Apart from that my parents loved the main as well so we do too.Love to go there again.I will recommend my friends as well as they are always exploring the good food.

Use to be one of our favourite restaurant in hawthorn, came here after a year had faced real disappointment, zero star for service and food has gone downhill bigtime , 3 main curry was too dry no gravy , NO FLAVOUR AT ALL ! Middle of dinner decided to order 2 more naan and dont know how it took 25 min for 2 naan with only our table in the restaurant, end up cancelling our naan and left food like that , No apologies at all from staff , really let us down and will never ever be going back to this place 🙏

Food taste and quality was good. Ambience may be best described as casual sophistication. Service was friendly but a bit inattentive, which perhaps will improve over time as staff gets more experienced. The menu itself is fairly stock standard which brings a sense of familiarity and assurance for some people. Prices are also quite reasonable. I might come back.

Place is in a great location. Though parking can be a bit difficult but that's Hawthorn for you. The place is more for a casual dining. The service is really good, waitress is friendly and attentive. The menu is not as extensive as the Footscray one but it has enough variety for vegetarians. We had the cold entree which is the lentil balls in yoghurt. The flavour was good. The sauce was quite addictive. Then for main we have the Punjabi butter chicken and Kaju curry. Both dishes were tasty, medium hot, delicious and hit the spot. Serving sizes are quite generous and we're not complaining. The price is moderate - around $17 for a main. Overall, would recommend!

Simply the best Indian food in Melbourne, there isn't anything like this elsewhere in Melbourne. If you live in Melbourne you must once try this restaurant. Absolutely authentic Indian cuisine and Owner and the staff were too generous and humble

I had a takeaway Chicken biryani from Aangan and let me tell you, and I kid you not it took me back to India. It was delicious and above all the owner Vijay was polite and courteous he was kind enough to explain to me how they do their biryani preparation and loves talking about food. I am definitely going to recommend this beautiful restaurant to all my friends and I can't wait to go back to try their butter chicken. Well done Aangan
Pratik Christian
I had goat curry and butter chicken. Goat curry wasnt that much tasty compare to butter chicken. Also goat wasn't cooked properly. One time go place and expensive for no reason.
Sumit Kalra

Waste of time worse food food was totally tasteless

The taste of food is good, however, the service could be improved. The food served to us was cold as ice.

Regular customer of Aangan express from last 1.5 years, first time faced that kind of worst behaviour from Aangan’s staff. Ordered something 10 at night and picked up where staff was rushing to close and stopped taking orders from 10:15, quality and quantity was not at all close to average mark, called back but they were closed. Called back next day and staff answered so rudely and said it’s like that only. I felt owner is not here and staff is not managing properly. Owner is so polite always.

The most clean indian restaurant I have seen in Melbourne till now.
Ambience here is pretty good, biriyani was presented in the bowl, looked like bimbimbap...
Parul Aggarwal
Food looks great but the taste is pretty average.

Been to this place last weekend because we like Indian food and keep trying places the curries here were just okay and we were shocked to see that under the name of their Naan/roti which is supposed to be cooked in clay pot come readymade from supermarkets. And you end up paying much more for so called “clay oven cooked” roti, I wouldn’t be surprised if they sold frozen Kulcha or curries bought from Indian stores !
Janhavi
I have been to Aangan Express sooooooo many times. It's one of the best places for Indo Chinese. The ambience is very Indian and it's extremely clean.
Lovely Swaitch
Aangan brings back to the original traditional food from Punjab.. absolutely loved the seekh kebab and the chicken 65. Not to miss is the chicken dum biryani.. they also have various flavours of lassi, tried the mango lassi which was so amazingly prepared! Would highly recommend trying the restaurant! Thumbs up!

the staff of this restaurant is very friendlu and polite. food is very tasty and recomond everyone try food. All the food which i had tried is very tasty

Awesome food, chicken tikka and biryani are a must try. Also the mango aam panna was so enjoyable.. Overall, loved the ambience, which was complimented by the great service!
Paras Bhansali
Ordered panner tikka, it was really good in taste and was properly marinated, and barbecued. so reordered the same but then the 2nd was in drastic condition, not even cooked properly messed up presentation. Burnt from sides overall tasteless.
Over priced place with okayish ambience.

Best biriyani everyday. I love that delicious foods in Angan. Chicken biriyani is Really tasty ❤️ customer service also great. Bcoz they had friendly staff with great service.

Having heard a lot about the Biryani they make, our expectations from Angan Express had us quite excited. Quite a cozy place it is to dine at.

Ordered a Dry Gobi Manchurian and Chicken Biryani.

Where we loved the Gobi Manchurian, Biryani was a letdown. All we could taste was chillies in the Biryani.....No spices no flavors just chillies. Though the chicken in the Biryani , was cooked perfectly.

Attendants are warm and very friendly...And quite attentive.

Menu is extensive and thus suits everyone including children, vegans, vegetarians and those who are on a glutenfree diet.

What I would certainly bring to the management's notice is the wash basin outside the toile in the open-air. It was filled with hair and dirt...Absolutely filthy.

Came here with my family, nice food. The naan tasted good and the fried rice was all right. The price was reasonable and the ambience was nice.
Hannah
I came there and ordered chicken and egg fried rice. It was good, not excellent but good enough for this type of fried rice. They added a bit of curry powder and it was not so annoying as I worried about. The rice was well-cooked with no broken rice. The egg and chicken components were nice too.
DT
The staff were nice and recommended a few dishes which were good. I think it’s a little over priced for the quantity of food (roti portion is too small). However the taste is good. I think the Indian dishes tasted better than the indo Chinese ones.
JaneDoeEats
One of my favourite places for Indian food. The menu is not as full fledged as the one in Footscray but they have the basics covered. The staff is friendly and polite and the taste of food is consistent. They have pickle, onion and lime slices on every table just like the restaurants back in India.
Curlsaugogo
This place does killer biryani and is great value for a cheap feed. Good lassi, Friendly service and prompt food. Will be back salivating in no time

Ordered this via uber eats. Butter chicken could have had more meat. The naan was really delicious and still warm despite the delivery. Unfort I didn’t enjoy the rice, tasted bland to me
Ashwin.halkhoree
Complete disappointment. No positives on the food. Quick service. Ordered a non veg Thali for $15....very bland. Meat overcooked n chewy. Chicken ok. Sauces watery....no flavours. 2 tiny pieces of meat/Chicken.....would not recommend. A lot of better options in the area for less $$.
Piumika
Decent variety of food. We ordered 6 different dishes including beverages and desserts and everything tasted above expectation. Really good place to indulge North Indian cuisine. we will be definitely going back.

I have been to the Footscray branch and was hoping to get the same standard and taste from this branch, but boy was i wrong. I ordered the Punjabi butter chicken, Balti Paneer, Chicken Noodles and Laccha Paratha. Apart from the Balti paneer, nothing even came close to the OG version from the other branch. The laccha paratha was really doughy and felt undercooked whereas the biggest disappointment was the noodles which were even worse that something that you might cook up at your place. The vegetables were cut really big and were too crunchy, they are supposed to be julienned finely so when they are cooked at high heat they still get cooked. Overall the quantity and quality of the food when combined with price that they are charging just does not measure up. They do accept Card payments and there is some parking near the place.

The staff are friendly and polite. Quite a free Indian restaurants to pick and this looked the cleanest from the outside.

I had the goat briyani. It was nice.

My friend had the kaju curry. Was nice and not oily.

All in all, an okay dinner however it was expensive for an Indian dinner. It might be due to the fact that we are more accustomed to the cheaper prices and better value at the Footscray branch.

One very clean and quick service restaurant. No compromise on quality. Did a quick takeaway and the Indo Chinese was 5/5.
Definitely coming in to dine-in as well.
Sonia
This place is always fun, for takeaway or dining in, service is alright. Its the regular 'Indian food'. My favourite is the Punjabi butter chicken. It has lovely taste and texture. My rating is medium because there are little to no items on the menu offering proper nutritional value, i.e., there are either paneer dishes or chicken/meat dishes in gravy, with entrees mostly fried or stir fried ingredients. So you'd never be able to have a balanced diet. If they can incorporate some healthy food on the menus then I would increase my rating. E.g. a few nice salads or raw foods, a few vegetables like okra, chickpeas, greens and the likes and so forth.

Chicken tikka was stale. We decided to leave the restaurant as we did not trust the quality of food. We were given a refund, which does not excuse the poor quality of food.

I’ve tried so many Indian restaurants in Melbourne, none comes close to honest authentic flavours. This place does. Food was so good it reminded me of the flavours back in India. Dal makhani and paneer tikka are beautiful. Very happy and will def return.

Once of good places to eat indian food in hawthorn. The Punjabi chicken masala curry was worth eating. Have eaten here a couple of times now the service is good but takes time to get the food out.
Mandeep
Very yummy food each and every dish is superb chats ,biryani ,curries and indo Chinese Masala kulcha is must and more over very good customer service and one more thing that they have very good choice of vegan food keep it up Aangan express 👍👍👍

1 star for good service only. Loss of 4 stars because of 'no taste' food. After so much hearing about Aangan in Footscray, we went there driving 30-40 mins and only got disappointment when put the food in mouth. Tasteless food at such high costs. Signature curries had no taste. Go there if you want to fill your tummy with good service but not good food. Waste of time and money. Never going back again as I want to eat good tasteful food not only service.
Prachi Tyagi
An amazing Indian restaurant that has great service as well as delicious food. The staff was very nice to us and catered to our needs even though we were about eight people. Will surely visit again.
Shraddha Bhongle
Good food great taste and good quantity. Loved the veg manchurian. Friendly staff value for money. Can add more item in lunch if possible. Will try again during dinner time.

My favourite place for papri chaat, love the yogurt and flavours combined. One serving is not enough! Had their infamous butter chicken - quite good and palak paneer - different than the spinach norm you get outside but not so much my liking. One of the best naan bread i had soft and aromatic. Saffron rice cooked perfectly and well seasoned
FeedMeFood
Love this place! Recently visited again and have added Methi Adraki Aloo to our regular list of favourites we order ( diced pan fried potatoes with fenugreek, spices and ginger ). Lamb vindaloo, saffron rice, chicken biryani and butter chicken are our other favourites. Lamb and chicken are so tender and delicious.( Medium heat is hot enough for us ). Highly recommend the Achari paneer tikka ( cottage cheese cubes on skewers ) tasty mmmmmm. Always good to see an Indian restaurant full with Indian customers. Staff are friendly and attentive.
Streaky Eats
Chicken 65 is a must try, request to have it crispy as certain visits we found the batter to be slightly wet, personal preference.

Chicken manchurian is another dish i find had unique flavour. Tried both with gravy and semi gravy, preferred the dry version.

The naans here are very good. Tried the butter naan and found it to be very soft and pillowy with multiple layers in them. Give it a try if you ever wonder how it's like compared to the regular plain naan. Saying that, you could also get the plain naan and have it buttered which i find almost equally flavourful but without the pinch in your wallet.

One thing that makes Aangan really stand out, is their commitment to customer experience. During every visit they always ask for feedback and ensure the food is alright with no issues.

Another notable mention is the aloo palak dish. Even meat lovers can appreciate this dish.

One of the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne! Absolutely love the food and the ambience is great too! Would give 10/10 for everything for sure! 👌🏻

We enjoyed our meal and very patient and helpful service but the evening was ruined by not 1 but two very loud screaming children. What sane person takes a 1 to 2 yo out for dinner at 8pm and then allows it to scream for half an hour. It’s just selfish and restauranteurs should get a backbone and deal with inconsiderate customers. I won’t be rushing back !
AC
Had dinner in January 2018. Restaurant was pleasant and nice. Service was very friendly. We had tandoori chicken, goat curry, vegetarian cottage cheese with peas, garlic naan and saffron rice. The food was delicious and we enjoyed it very much. Only comment was the naan was a little soft and made it hard to use as s scoop for delicious curry. Will definitely be back
MadaboutFood
I happened to visit this place by chance. Bit disappointed with the tastes of curry. Price suitable for students but quality needs improvement especially the curries. In cbd i have visited multiple places where in 10dollars you get unlimited roti, 3 curries, free tea, rice, curd so i guess the team needs to do a market research to improve and compete with others.
MzPiggy
Goat dum biryani & papri chaat were SO good - nothing close to this taste anywhere in Melbourne so far ! Naan was ok to good. Quick friendly service. Somewhat pricey but with that flavour , fair enough !

Food is very average!! I would recommend u skip the starters they are below average main course is better...my best pick is dal makhani and gulab jamun... Do not bother trying any other dessert nothing nice!!

Walked in with very very high hopes which we had from Aangan in footscray. Have to say a little disappointed. We ordered a Chicken 65 which was really good. The Chicken Manchurian could have been much better. We also ordered the Gilafi Seekh Kebab which was good but the quantity was a big disappointment. Overall a good place, but does not hold up to the Aangan in Footscray. That is some real good experience.

One of the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne.
A small but really nice ambience and absolutely delicious food..
Can always expect the best from AANGAN!

Came here several times for the papri chaat, which can be quite hard to find! It was delicious, and the ingredients were fresh. Nice balance of yogurt and chutneys with the chickpeas and papris.

The food is let down by the staff, who are simply rude. The man who I presume was the manager seems to pick and choose who he treats well - or not.

Your mileage my vary, so be wary if this matters to your dining experience.

Edit up to 4 stars: staff are now delightful. Rude man is gone. Biryani, thali and chaat is fantastic. Ingredients are fresh and food is delicious and fragrant. Highly recommended!

Came here after my Indian friend’s recommendation for lunch. It was quiet at lunch.
I ordered a lunch set of 2 curries with rice and roti bread.
The curry were delicious. Note to me, first time having indian curry, this is terrific. I also love the roti bread. Affordable price and big portion.
Will come back next time with my friend to try other dishes

Pretty good for an express take away..! Mains are absolutely delicious..! Tried the Balti paneer and must admit never had one like that before..! Divine and generous not like other places that give us 5 pieces of paneer full stop. Their tandoori chicken varieties were brilliant too..! Lunch deals - a bit over priced for uni students and every day customers who eat out..! Biriyani generous and tasty ..! Dal makhani little over hyped and not authentic like the Punjabi ones
Rashim Kamra
One of the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne, happy that it is now in Eastern suburbs - same taste as the original one. Maneesh Ji as the perfect host welcomes with a smile - extremely hospitable and accomodating! Surely add the cherry on the top.
Radi
Went there for lunch last week... ordered 1 veg,1 non veg thali...and that was not even touching 'OK' mark but the Chinese combo they serve is really good.
The prices are little high when compared to nearby eateries. I mean $15 for a pre plated meal with one bread and curries which are too less for the rice they serve is not a thumbs up deal. Talking about taste, it was just average and shocking thing was there was no paneer preparation for thali. Not too good experience.

Always best never disappoint you to have indian food in melbourne being from delhi .... finding nyc food is always happening ..... Can come here everytime i want to eat Indian food

Lovely food, bit pricey but don't mind paying for yummy food. Staff are new and young and service a bit fizzled at times but can be overlooked.

Went there many times for take away.. their indo chinese dish is really really good. Perfect manchurian and oerfecr chilli paneer. A tad more expensive than normal indian restaurants, but its worth it
