Review Rustica - Hawthorn

Edwar Kartio
Brunch place serving decent coffee and food. The portion is quite big which is always a bonus when you're paying so much for brunch food nowadays. Sauteed greens were cooked nicely although missed a bit of seasoning. The corn fritters were shaped like waffles and very light to eat. They sell bread and cakes too. Food - 7 Service - 7 Vibe - 7 Price - $$$

Such an amazing eggs benedict! FOOD: I ordered the Lobster Eggs Benedict and it was absolutely phenomenal! The flavour of the Lobster Eggs Benedict was EVERYTHING!! I loved how succulent and juicy the lobster was and the herb hollandaise was probably my favourite part. It was so flavourful and along with the lovely toasted bun, it made for one of the best savoury brunch dishes I’ve ever had! The only thing I would have wished for is definitely more lobster 😛 But all in all, this dish was absolute perfection and I can see why it’s such a cult favourite SERVICE: Service was lovely! Overall, Rustica definitely lived up to my expectations and they delivered amazing quality food with lovely service!

Rustica... What can I say. They have a branch in Fitzroy, Emporium and Hawthorn. Their coffee is always amazing and their croissants.....let me tell you, I've never had a matcha croissant in my life and this one was superb. The pineapple filling gave it a zing of freshness to balance the matcha cream. The textures of lightness and crispiness and smooth cream all in one bite. Yes please. I also had their breakfast - baba ganoush and eggs. It was very delicious. Only downside of this place - ALWAYS crowded on the weekends. You will need to wait maybe 10-15 mins for a table.

Nice Hawthorn cafe that has lots of food options. We dined outside as it was too busy inside and had the eggs on toast with avo! Good coffee, on the slightly expensive side, but that’s Hawthorn.

Food was delicious and service was helpful and attentive! I had the corn fritters with bacon... was a large meal, but had perfectly cooked eggs, waffle shaped fritters and great flavours with the sauce... I was more then happy to finish it all. Bacon wasn't necessary because of the size of the meal, but who doesn't love a side of bacon. Regular stream of people coming and going for a Sunday morning, but didn't feel loud and busy. Went home with an amazing fruit loaf as well! Happy!!

After the success in the CBD, Fitzroy and Richmond the Rustica crew has decided to open its door to Hawthorn for the pleasure of many locals😀. Out of the 4 venues, this one must be the most beautiful one, including funky and sleek furniture, great colour scheme and a vibrant deco that gives the right buzz to the place😍. I was pleased to see head barista Dan from Rustica in the city and Misha from the Richmond one, absolutely two legends who will lift the game up here in Hawthorn with their known quality and talent👌. I ordered their Breakfast Salad and sat to relax. A minute later I received an espresso which I hadn't ordered and I was very glad to see how Dan remembered my coffee😁. The salad arrived and in one word it was: yum! It was the perfect lunch that I wanted and with all those flavours and textures it made want to come back here for more and more😛. Rustica, you have baked it, pardon, done it again 😂 Another brilliant replica of their winning formula which it set the bar high up🙌. Rustica's verdict: MBH approved 👌 -MustBeHungry

Busy but nice atmosphere. Staff are friendly, and the coffee and food are great. Be prepared to wait for a table any time after 9:30am on the weekend. Make sure you take some of their delicious pastries home

We came in on a busy Saturday morning the place was packed! Managed to secure a seat quickly though. The service is prompt and friendly, coffee is not the best in the area but good 7/10. We ordered chilli scrambled eggs and breakfast roll. I didn’t expect much of my breakfast roll just wanted something not too heavy as we are heading out for lunch in a few hours. But it has definitely set my expectations up for all and any breakfast rolls I am having for the rest of my life lol SO this is how it should taste?! It’s so good I feel like I can have it everyday 😂 My friend’s chilli scrambled eggs tasted very good as well and he is usually very picky with her brunches. Took away some donuts and croissants on our way out, can’t resist!

An absolutely delightful brunch! A good portion size of greens, two slices of the best sourdough in Melbourne and a perfect poached egg. I have been to many rusticate and they never disappoint!

Enjoyed lunch with my family at a local cafe in hawthorn. Great selection of food and nicely presented. The lobster eggs benedict and mixed mushroom with eggs are a must try. My parents said the ice coffee and mocha was delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience.

Great coffee and vibe about the place. Interesting selection of donuts which I didn’t try. Will return.

A perfect place for a group of four girlfriends to catch up on latest gossip over a cup of finely brewed mocha. The Panna cotta is a pleasure for eyes as well as for the taste buds. It was indeed a refreshing brunch at Rustica on a sunny Saturday.
Can’t wait to get back to try their croissants. Overall a pleasant experience.

Friendly service staff. However, no mocha, why?

Good cafe is just around the corner. Tables are limited so we were sitting outside. Surprisingly saw a cat drawing on the wall brights me day.
Good food and good customer service.
Melbourne Madness
Ordered my first ever Chilli Scramble at this cafe - and now it's a new fave!Cute cafe and atmosphere with plenty of natural light, but most importantly the breakky food was really tasty and out of our table of 5, no one had a complaint about anything!

Good coffee too - am able to recommend a visit! :)

I’m not normally one to write reviews, but having been to the Rustica in Fitzroy and enjoyed the food and service, I have been wanting to try the Hawthorn version.
However, the service received was less than acceptable, in particular from the barista.
I ordered a strong almond milk latte (lactose intolerance). Upon receiving the latte and taking a few sips, I realised that the milk was not almond. I verified this by asking my partner to taste as her coffee was full strength normal milk. She confirmed that my coffee was not almond milk. I then asked the waitress who returned my coffee to the kitchen. About 5 minutes later, the barista returned with a new almond milk latte but proceeded to tell me that the first coffee was in fact almond milk and that they were too busy to be making extra coffees.
Fast forward to about 30 mins later and I began to feel the effects of lactose.
Message to the barista - don’t assume mate. Sure you’re busy and you’re making lots of coffees, but there is a chance you may have made a mistake, which you likely did on this occasion. But even so, it’s no way to talk to a customer and no way to be so ignorant of the intolerances that some of your customers have. Safe to say, I won’t be going back to Rustica @ Hawthorn.

Loved the lobster brioche Benedict - full on flavour and generous with the the lobster. Even my 1 year of devoured the lobster. Another winner was the Corn Fritters with poached eggs - variety of textures and was a complete flavour bomb.
Great coffee!

So many dishes to try on my wish list - going back for the chilli scrambled eggs and baba ganoush soon!

Rustica’s Hawthorn cafe is a great airy and roomy space, perfect for brunch dates and group catchups. I came for a quick visit over the Easter long weekend and staff were super warm and attentive even though it was quite busy and their Hot Cross Buns were literally flying out the door!

I had the Corn Fritters ($19.50) which were adorably served as waffles, with a lovely assortment of green themed toppings - smashed avo, kale, coriander & microgreen salad, chimichurri, life and poached eggs. A really filling but healthy feeling dish as well.
LifestyleByLily
On a warm Saturday morning, we met for a catch up brunch at Rustica. A great and prominent location for a cafe with lots of parking available. We quickly realised that there was no air-con in the venue so the sweats were real but I doubt this will be an issue over the future months. We browsed the menu and ordered the usual coffees.
Le Cat & Kate
The lobster brioche roll is divine! So soft and tasty and a really different take on a traditional eggs Benedict style meal. The service was friendly and the coffee was not bad, I’d return!
Fiona Chen
Lovely Café, nice food and excellent service, love the corn fritters in Waffle style, my friend and I had lunch there till 3pm and the staff gave us a box of their sweets for free, warm touch of the day

Great service and delicious food! Love that the matcha latte was made using almond milk and the best chilli scramble I had! Will definitely be back!

Great ambience, very friendly staff and convenient location. Beautiful breakfast, both presentation and taste wise. I ordered the sauteed greens and hubby ordered smashed avocados. Both looked appetising and were very tasty. I would rate it 4.5 if I could. The only small disappointment was the coffee was average. And the sofa was full of spill marks if I have to put on my OCD hat. Overall great experience, will definitely recommend to others and will come back.

Worth every star, an easy 5/5 on all fronts. The beautiful ambience and refreshing vibe could be felt as soon as you enter the front. You are then greeted by the most attractive pastries you have ever laid your eyes on. I'm pretty sure I saw a cheesecake croissant there, wow! Service was also very polite and efficient.

The 3 dishes we had were the corn fritters, lobster roll (subbed with cured salmon as lobster was sold out) and a lamb and grain salad. The dishes definitely look Insta worthy however it backs itself by packing some punches in the flavour department...every single element of the dish married together so well.

Coffee was also superb!
Sita Pramana
Went and tried the lobster hollandaise. It was really good! The sauce was tasty, the lobster was cooked well, did not taste fishy at all. The portion was good.

We live quite close to Rustica. Always busy during the weekends so have to come a bit early if you'd like a seat. Food, coffee, fit out and service are all ok and above average. Good choice for the cool local Hawthorn crowd.
Betsy
A top notch Melbourne cafe. Follows the brunch formula to a tee but somehow manages to take it up a notch. Everything on the plate adds to the flavour, not just there for looks. Strongly recommend!
Lily
A Great place for brunch and coffee - the baba ganoush w poached eggs and halloumi was sensational! Such care in balancing the eggplant with the spices in the baba ganoush!
Amy
Friendly service here but sadly disappointed by the lobster Benedict it was soggy and the lobster was mushy. Avocado on toast was fine nothing amazing but it was fresh and tasty.

The baked goods look great so I would go back to try those but won't be having and cooked food again.

Lauren Neuro-Noopsie
Really great friendly service. Great large menu with a good assortment of brunch and lunch options. Ordered the zucchini fritters and I probably wouldn’t order them again- were a bit floury and dry... my partner however had the babaganoush which was incredible! Would definitely go back

Rustica are back open today and as tempting as it was to grab some delectable treat I only took a coffee on this occasion. A good coffee for sure and quick friendly service.

In the past I have sat in and eaten highly rated their porridge (it was winter on my last visit.) I also loved the Tabasco laced hollandaise on the Egg Benedict choosing the gin cured salmon over the ham hock option.
Rustica is the perfect place for brunch. I loved their refreshing matcha panna cotta. The pear was delicious as well. It was a perfect dish for a very hot day in Melbourne. Service was good, but please note the kitchen can close quite early but that might have been because it was after Christmas.

We came for breakfast on New Years Eve with the family. Very tasty and well presented dishes. Coffee was decent and staff were lovely. Quite a small space, but lots of windows and light. We’d come again.

Coffee was great and the service was on par. Food was fresh, high quality and delicious. Overall nice experience and would definitely recommend.

4.5
Came for a brunch sesh with the girls and enjoyed it a lot. I got the lobster benedict which was really tasty and I enjoyed the brioche bun. The coffee was also quite good and service was quick and efficient. I’m a bigger fan of the Fitzroy branch though, although Hawthorn is closer to me! Thanks for having us Rustica.
Samantics
Great menu and nice service the place isn’t huge but is well laid out with nice decor. We had the fritters with bacon which were done like waffles. Also had the lamb roll and OMG so good. All the dishes on the menu sounded lovely so all I can say is we’ll be back. PS I got the almond croissant to go and it was freaking good. Worth checking out their pastries

Rustica Hawthorn has a lovely little interior, giving off a warm, welcoming vibe. My partner and I ordered the Slow Roasted Lamb Baguette and Lobster Benny. The lamb was immaculately cooked and paired with caramelised onion and crusty bread, it is a must have dish if you are visiting any of Melbourne's Rusticas. Paired with a small side salad, it was a very filling and satisfying meal, and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more!

The Lobster Benny smelled a bit off when it arrived and unfortunately, its scent took away from our enjoyment. The soft, sweet bread and delightful hollandaise sauce helped cover the lobster up to an extent. Unfortunately the yolks of the poached eggs were a little over cooked and not runny at all. Having visited other Rusticas many times, I found this dish to be an anomaly amongst some stellar meals. Not the best lobster benny I’ve tasted, although I did appreciate the quantity that was given.

The summer loving juice was refreshing and cold, and just what we needed to go with our meaty rolls- a perfect summer drink, although slightly on the pricier side.
Flying Forward
Rustica are very consistent in their menu execution across all branches.
The Hawthorn branch has a simple design and is very clean, with lots of light coming through.
The Baba Ganoush is deliciously fresh, with crunchy toast on top a spread of eggplant spread.
I love the oven roasted tomatoes, they're very rich and sweet.
The halloumi is also grilled and has a nice texture and cheesey flavour without being overly salty.
FoodN
Friendly service which is always a great start. Coffee was nice and smooth. Poached eggs cooked perfectly on toast that wasn’t burnt - I am always amazed at how many cafes give you burnt toast! Smashed avo perfectly seasoned. An enjoyable breakfast
Sabby
Lovely selection of menu items which are displayed openly. A beautiful cafe with some really friendly and welcoming staff. Tried the strawberry cronut which was something intriguing and new! Really love how the cafe isn't too crowded as well, giving off a lovely vibe. The Baba Ganoush was heavenly, as was Sauteed Greens and Eggs Benedict which is a hard classic to execute well! Will definitely be coming again to try out their Organic oat porridge and other menu items!

Baba Ganoush. Fresh tomato, grilled halloumi taste wonderful. Plating is a little shame, not very colorful.
Take away sandwich is great!
Coffee is not my preference, not impressive.
Staff is polite.

Visited Rustica Hawthorn for the first time in a while.
We love Rustica (Brick lane) in CBD for the eggs benedict with pulled pork and but unfortunately that option was not available at the Hawthorn outlet.
It is nice though that each of the Rustica outlets have a slightly different menu that is unique to their store.

We proceeded to order a soy latte and a long black before our meals. The long black was just average but the soy latte had a good balance of coffee to soy milk flavor which is great because I hate it when my soy latte just tastes like warmed soy milk....

We ordered the egg benedict that is served in a brioche roll and opted for the smoked trout. The flavour of the hollandaise sauce was great and balanced well with the smoked trout and poached eggs. The brioche roll also added extra richness to the dish and was a good match, though my partner said he would have preferred brioche toast as he felt visually, it would have been more appealing.

We also order the green breakfast?! (sorry cant remember the exact name!!) which had some beans, kale, broccolini and edamame beans with poached eggs on a slice of toast. Oh! and kimchi... kinda of an interesting addition but the strong flavour of kimchi did help to flavour the otherwise simple (flavourwise) dish! It also had a tofu cream dotted on the plate which to be honest did not have much flavor. Overall the dish was quite nice but also quite simple. Prehaps a sauce with a bit more flavour to it would give it a little extra something to make it special.

We did overall enjoy our meal and service. Rustica is one of our go to places to get brunch on the days where you cant be bothered to research which new cafe we must go to. It is also a same option to go to as it won't disappoint
Eatjin
The lobster roll was SUCH a let down. lobster meat was devoid of unami most likely been frozen long ago. The hollandaise was a tragic addition as my taste buds utterly rejected the herby taste.

The long anticipated chilli scrambled eggs was good, but not as cheesy as I thought it would be.
Some Bunee Loves Food
The egg benedict with pulled pork is huge! Generous portions of meat! Their croissants are crunchy, fresh and tasty. I love their almond croissant and lychee rose!

The food was very nice, and rustica’s bakery doesn’t disappoint me at all. I like the small range of choices which allow better quality control which is evident through its wonderful food. Unfortunately the Lobster Benedict was sold out but it did not fail to impress my taste buds.

The lamb baguette was super delicious. The baguette had a perfect amount of crunch whilst still easy to chew. The caramelised onion beautifully compliments the slow cooked lamb.

The mushrooms on sourdough was much better than the ones I had from White Mojo. This one is a lot more balanced and the dish wasn’t overloaded with mushrooms. The bits of pecorino cheese 🧀 added a bit more complexity whilst having the umami under control.

Matcha yoghurt Panna cotta was the most interesting. The rhubarb and Yuzu poached pear made the simple breakfast dish much more fun to eat. However, I’m not a fan of the matcha yoghurt, I much prefer a simple matcha panna cotta, the sourness masks the delicate matcha flavour. I do recommend to experiment this dish by using black sesame instead, the stronger roasted aroma should taste quite well as a yoghurt panna cotta. The dish is called panna cotta though it feels more like a granola dish, and the focus is more on the pear, rhubarb and granola. The name is a bit misleading in a way.

The lamb chickpea salad was delicious as well. The mint leaves help lighten the meaty flavour from the lamb, making the dish taste more like a salad.
This is a great place for a working lunch if you are feeling a little flush. The Babaganoush eggs are my absolute fave and the coffee is pretty good. If you are lucky enough to snag yourself a booth you've got a pretty nice lunch break!

I've been here a couple of times, and I like the place.

The menu, to be fair, wasn't that innovative, but if you do well what you offer, then you win me over easily.

I had the Babaganush eggs and wow, I could not fault the dish. All the flavours worked beautifully together, a great mix of textures, the eggs were perfectly poached, and the whole ensemble was flawless. I felt tempted to lick the dish!

I love Rustica doughnuts, they are sweet but not overly so, and full of flavour.

Coffee is good.

Fast service.
My main complaints are the seating area itself, and the fact that the staff aren't especially friendly.
Chelsea
Fantastic service and great food to match it.

The manager and waitresses were wonderful. When I was dining there, a cleaner had to vacuum the seats so I was requested to change my seats which I didn’t mind at all. However the manager was so apologetic, went above and beyond and gave me a complimentary coffee and a loaf of bread due to the inconvenience / loud noise of the vaccum. Such lovely service, and really appreciate it!

On top of that, fantastic coffee and beautiful brunch. I had the Smashed Avos and everything was cooked very well. One of the best brunches I had in Melbourne. I will definitely be back!
Hungry Gwendy
Right opposite to my workplace, so yes! been here a couple of times, either having hot chocolate or some donuts and banana bread. This place gets crowded quickly but the service is pretty quick to keep the line moving. I've literally tried almost every Donuts they serve and they are better than Krispy Kreme (don't hate for this) But try it for yourself, maybe I like when the cream oozes out more.
The perfect location, just at the intersection, you can barely miss it. A great place to have a small meeting or just a take away parcel. Their banana bread is a size of bread loaf. It's so filling!!
Anu Kailash
Great service and loved their coffee and Almond Croissant as it wasn’t too sweet. Had a really nice Chickpea salad with Asparagus and green with Yoghurt dressing with Dukah
Pandy
Definitely 5 out of 5. From the moment we stepped in, the coffee, the food, the service, were all top notch. I had latte and Eggs Benedict with cured salmon. The latte is nice, straightforward, and easy to drink. The poached egg is text book perfect, firm on the outside runny on the inside, the hollandaise sauce is rich but not overly rich. Served with salad, toast, and cured salmon, it’s a well-rounded meal. The service is friendly and efficient.
Vanessa
Making healthy food something you want to eat 🤤 Doesn’t that organic oat porridge and matcha yoghurt panna cotta look so good?! Well it sure tasted delicious. Generous portions (with affordable pricing)... all those ingredients balancing well together. The coffee is smooth and the matcha latte, on point. Lovely service as well and a relaxing atmosphere.
Leila
Wonderful spot for some coffee and pastries in the morning, I could eat their cronuts everyday. The waffles on the other hand were alright, not the best I’ve had, but the savory mains on the menu were pretty good.
Thi
We had the eggs benny and the mushroom egg dish. I hadn’t been to brunch for a long time, so my expectations were high and well met. I could smell the truffle a mile away and eggs were cooked perfectly. It’s a nice place with plenty of natural light, making it an ideal location to have a relaxing brunch.

Melbourne's weather has been rather pleasant over the last couple of days and after recovering from a crippling cold that left me bedridden for a couple of days, catching up with a friend over brunch was a much needed break from my indoor routine. A small, albeit comfortable cafe that has an appropriate amount of spacing between tables (unlike a few crammed establishments that I have been to), Rustica was the perfect location for exchanging small talk over a cup of warm coffee.
Avolette
The coffee is great here and the chilli scramble was absolutely delicious! I ordered a side of haloumi and it went perfectly with the wonderful hint of spice and the gooeyness of the scrambled egg.
Of course the sourdough bread had a wonderful chewy texture.

The staff here were really friendly as well!
Lss
Very modern interior and various options for vegetarians. We ordered the mixed mushrooms and cumin chicken salad. Both are above the average standard, but not surprising. The chestnut paste in the mixed mushroom tastes a little wired for me.
Amy Smith
Lovely cafe. I’ve been here lots for coffee but finally sat down and had a meal. Staff are super nice and the food was delicious. I do wish a side of ‘egg’ for $3 came with two eggs though. Seems expensive for one egg when you think about the fact that it costs $3 to buy a dozen eggs! But regardless, it was. Great meal!
Trekking Food
I was looking forward to coming here after seeing pics of the beautiful desserts & good reviews. The lamb baguette was delicious but the desserts were a bit of a let down. The cronut was quite sweet and the apple & pear tart had a funny burnt charcoal taste to it. Was it meant to be some kind of smoked cream? My friend requested scrambled eggs with her baba ganoush dish and it had tiny pieces of egg shells in it :-/ My baguette was placed on a damaged and dirty tray, like in a cafeteria.

Drive past this cafe everyday so thought it was time we should visit. The cafe is really nice and the staff are friendly. Was quite busy this particular Sunday morning but we got seated after a short 5 min wait.

Started off with a iced chocolate (yummm, highly recommend this) and latte. The menu has a wide variety of options and could have chosen a number of dishes but we settled on the baba ganoush and the breakfast salad with grilled haloumi. Both dishes looked great and tasted delicious.

Would recommend this cafe to others and will be back again to try something else off the menu. Overall, a pleasing experience had.

Another great spot for brunch in the Hawthorn area! We had a great brunch/lunch dining experience there. The staff was super friendly and the coffee was strong and smooth, well balanced.

I loved my #roasted pumpkin salad# with quinoa, charred corn, mixed greens, toasted pumpkin seeds and grilled cumin chicken. It was a lighter choice for brunch but tasted good with the nuts and goat cheese. The pickled guindilla peppers was sour and lightly spicy, which added some extra kick into the dish. Eating small pieces with the salad, and you gonna love it.

#corn fritters#It came in waffle shaped instead of traditional round balls. The fritters were nice and soft with lots of corn which made it lovely sweet. The avocado, black bean and chimichurri gave the dish hint of Mexican flair which was quite matching and enhanced the flavours. Recommend!

I just couldn’t resist the beautifully crafted pastry on the counter! So we ended up having one chocolate peanut butter croissant as a dessert after our brunch. It was a chocolate and almond croissant coated with chocolate peanut butter and roasted peanuts. It was as delicious as it sounds...
Amazing food, great atmosphere and kind staff. The place to grab a quick bite or a nice brunch meal, Let’s not forget how good the coffees are!

Lovely cafe with friendly staff and fast service. The menu has a large variety of food and pastries and a great ambience! Highly recommend to everyone in the neighbourhood.

The Corn Fritters were great! The zesty sauce went really well with the fritters (they were shaped like waffles!!) and the poached eggs were great as well. There was no wait, despite it being lunch hour on a Monday, and the service was great as well.

We walked past Rustica in Hawthorn several times on our way to the gym, until one day we couldn't take it anymore! The pastries were calling our name! The cafe itself is filled with natural light, and very inviting in terms of decor and set up. The staff promptly greeted us and allowed us to sit wherever we liked!

We ordered a flat white, which could have been a tad stronger, but still tasty! I strolled over to the pastry display and found myself in awe of the hazelnut chocolate caramel cronut. Of course, I got one and it was pure heavenly bliss. The flaky layers of the cronut with the caramel oozing out the sides when I cut into it was absolute perfection. You could definitely taste the chocolate hazelnut flavors, as it was very balanced! I literally could have eaten a couple of these bad boys. Phenomenal!

Next, we ordered the corn fritters with smashed avocado, black bean, kale, coriander & microgreen salad, chimichurri and poached eggs. We added a side of bacon for good measure! This dish was very flavorful and the chimichurri really brought it to life! The fritters could have been a touch fluffier, but with corn, you can kind of assume it to be a bit denser. Overall, a delicious dish!

Definitely stop in, for no other reason than to try a delectable pastry! I will continue to dream about that cronut for the foreseeable future!

Great bakery cafe with good coffee and cakes. Their breakfasts are enjoyable and I often come in here midweek for a slow brunch and lappy time. Handy to Hawthorn station

Not in awe. Visited the place for lunch. Quite sub standard. Order the Panacotta, lamb shoulder and Baba Ganoush grilled haloumi. Coffee was okay. For the time of the day, service was slow. I wish I have more good things to talk about the place as I was meaning to visit them for a long time. May be I'll give them another go in the near future

I always thought of Rustica as mostly a bakery, but we ate off the menu when we visited this Hawthorn location. We were blown away by food plated up - the black bean and corn salsa with avocado and chimichurri on waffle (I think it was a daily special) was perfectly balanced in flavours and textures, and everything was really made/cooked. The beef brisket sandwich was also excellent - the meat was cooked incredibly well and really flavoursome and juicy. Of course the bread was amazing in both dishes, as was the dessert we snuck in too. We were so impressed and hope to revisit soon!

Been coming here since it opened! Great food, great coffee, great service! Portions are great. Any person I bring to Rustica for the first time always loves it! Highly recommend.

Amazing food and the cafe has a great vibe. Ordered the pulled pork benedict, my friends got the panacotta with muesli, wholemeal waffle and a lamb toastie. They were all equally good. My favourite was the pulled pork Cz it was so well balanced and delicious. Service was friendly. Looking forward to trying more.
Sir Brunch-A-Lot
Best place to grab brunch near Hawthorn station. Wait staff are always nice and very attentive. Food is always, always delicious! The eggs Benedict with pulled ham hock is my lastest favourite! Definitely grab a cronut or other sweet from the front after any meal too, far too good to miss. Highly recommend

Been wanting to go to this place & finally i got here! I ordered the eggs benedict hollandaise pork hock & waffle pretzel with a cup of chai latte & coffe. Love the food, love the ambience and love the place! The staff was treating us kindly and they were very helpfull toward us. Overall, satisfying experience for me🙌🏻 #BHAsFoodDiary

Polite and friendly as staff!
Presentation, taste and portion size is 👌🏼
What more could you ask for
Would definitely go back for brunch here

Rustica is one of those quintessential Melbourne cafes that just excels when it comes to the brunch game.
I’ve had both their chilli scramble and waffles but most recently, their baba ganoush. A-mazing. Two slices of their own sourdough bread topped with eggs, haloumi, veggies etc. Definitely one of my favourite ‘on toast’ brunch dishes in Melbourne.

If you find yourself in Hawthorn checking out Bunnings, Baby Bunting, Bed Bath N’ Table, Forty Winks and/or Snooze, you might like to reward yourself with a stroll down Burwood Road and a casual lunch at Rustica Canteen at 121 Power Street, Hawthorn. It will be worth it. The staff intuitively know that you’ve had a long morning. The service is excellent, particularly for a cafe – warm, friendly and accommodating.

Called into rustica at hawthorn For a quick post working week pint. it has the distinct advantage of being the only such spot where a quick pint is on the cards around here. They have fairly good happy hour drink prices (pints of tap beer between $6 & $9) plus they also discount some of their tapas dishes down to $10 with an included pot of beer. Perfect for a weekend wind down. They have an outside drinking/dining area which would be great on a balmy summer night. Tonight I did not eat in but have done in the past for breakfast and was satisfied.

🍺

I got the chilled scrambled eggs here.
Great in flavour, bacon is scattered throughout
A very generous serving
Felt a little too oily although when you ask for a scramble what do you expect.

As cafe food goes, fresh and a good variety. However, if I was a resident in one of the overhead apartments I doubt that it'd be worth dying for. The outside tables and planter boxes at the end of the shop front, are blocking the fire exit doors, with big signs on them saying FIRE EXIT - KEEP CLEAR. Not a good look.

Pumpkin sourdough bread was awesome!! Pecan croissant was also a great treat. You can’t go wrong with the bread or pastries here.
Almond matcha was too powdery & not well mixed in. The Fitzroy shop does a much better job.
Smashed avo with beetroot relish was ok.
Service was quite slow but very friendly.

Amazing food!!! We drove past this place yesterday afternoon and judging from the outside we thought we had to come in for a meal. So this morning we did! And it didn't disappoint! We had the smashed avo and breakfast salad! What a meal!! It was delicious and can't fault it! Coffees were great too. The only let down was the croissant I ordered last minute - quite flaky and a bit too buttery! All in all - a good experience.

Been on my list for a while but wasn’t overly impressed, just found it average. Not much variety in dishes, it’s basically just breads with different topping options. I get that it’s core is a bakery, but a bit more of a range of brunch offerings wouldn’t go astray.

I’ve been to Rustica in the city, it was good. Got a quick coffee on the go and some Banana bread to fill me up while waiting for the coffee. Great service, great taste on banana bread, overall, good experience

I love this place! The decor is so fresh and modern, the food and coffee is really good and the staff are just fabulous! Found a booth near the window and enjoyed brunching as the world wizzed by. Ordered a Soy Chai and the smashed avocado. Both were great! The avo came with a poached egg which I requested well done and it came just as ordered. Really good flavours and a great menu. Will be back!

Been wanting to try this place for a bit, finally managed to get to it today and wasn't disappointed. The menu has a good selection for both breakfast and lunch. I had a lamb shoulder salad. It was nice. The salad isn't drown with dressing so you can actually taste the greens. The lamb shoulder was lightly seasoned and soft. (My apologies but no photos, I forgot to take.. or I was really hungry. I going with the latter).
The coffee was excellent. It was strong and without the sour after taste. So you can do the maths on that on. Will be back for a 2nd visit. 😀

Friendly staff members who welcome you with warm smiles. We received our drinks and our food in a reasonable time.
The dishes that we ordered were delicious and full of flavour.
We ordered the chilli scrambled eggs, Baba Ganoush and the fried eggs with bacon .....

Can’t go wrong with rustica, delicious chocolate croissants and great coffee. Didn’t get a chance to try their menu but it’s a good excuse to go back again.

Really enjoyed brunch at Rustica in Hawthorn today. We didn't have to wait long for a table and the service was efficient and friendly. I ordered the sautéed spring greens with asparagus, zucchini, broccolini, hummus, halloumi and poached eggs on sourdough with a side of pulled pork. The dish was really light and fresh and had a great combo of flavours. I also loved the pulled pork which wasn't dry or fatty.

Been here few times during weekdays and weekend. Coffee improves a lot as they might change the bean. Pastries always must order items. Tried the waffle, some and balanced with fruits. Nice one. The downside is sometimes you have to wait quite long time for coffee as they are very busy.
Nicole
I was really happy with my visit to Rustica.
I ordered the roast pumpkin on sourdough which was served with spicy capsicum purée, yoghurt, poached eggs and pomegranate. It was really nice with the right amount of spice. Good value for money at $17.
My friend ordered the smashed avo and added the trout - she enjoyed her meal too.
Service was friendly and prompt.

Have been raving about this place since the morning I had this incredible breakfast.
I always choose the chilli scrambled eggs off any menu and I have to say Rustica's are by far the best.
The haloumi was cut thin And I much prefer it thick but it can easily be excised when the main meal was so great. My iced latte was also perfect.

Overall 10/10 the service was great also and I can't wait to go back.

Had a delicious cumin chicken green salad. Ingredients were super fresh and service was attentive. Will be back to try other dishes for sure

Happened to drive pass this cafe at the corner of burwood road and power st on my way to work. Decided to have lunch here, ordered the peppered beef brisket with mashed potatoes, it looks ordinary but tastes very yummy! The peppered beef brisket very tender and tasty, I think the meat has been brining then cured. If you like Dijon mustard, you will def like their mashed potatoes! Well, at least I love it, just too full to finish :)

Came here on grand final Saturday for lunch, pleasant atmosphere and parking wasn't too difficult.
Both food and coffee were worth it. I ordered the lamb shoulder salad. The meat was fork tender but needed a little more salt, no biggie.
Reasonably priced and generous servings. We'll definitely come back if we're in the area.Annie Lu

Came here for breakfast a few weeks back and it was delicious. I ordered the chilli scrambled eggs on pumpkin sourdough. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the sourdough was delicious. I just wished there was a little bit more spice/chilli in it, but other than that, would happily go back again.

We actually chose this place as I saw cronuts on their zomato pics! Sorry but this was so delicious we started eating and then realised we forgot to take pics! (Yes, we had one of those moments)

Overall great service, delicious food, clean fresh welcoming ambience. Love the all day brekky menu! The 4 of us + baby in a pram had a pulled pork salad, eggs benny with Smoked Trout, eggs benny with pulled pork and a self designed poached eggs with bacon and mushrooms meal. The tabasco hollandaise had a peppery/spicy kick that made it even more delicious! Wasn't too spicy as I'm not a huge fan + low tolerance towards spicy food. (Yes disappointing I know..)

I love Chai latte and it was a good one with no extra sugar needed. My friends enjoyed their coffees - iced mocha (look really awesome) and the cappuccino had this beautiful design of a lady! So cool!

Definitely did not disappoint!

Great food, professional and warm staff, fantastic in house baked breads and top notch coffee. Will certainly return here and would recommend.
Best new cafe in the inner-east. Visited this morning. Fantastic food, delicious coffee and friendly service. This could be my new favourite weekend cafe.
Visited Rustica on a Sunday at 10.15am.
There were a lot of people waiting in the entry way, a lot were for take away but we were told we had to wait for a table and popped our name down on a wait list.
A couple of things were noticed while waiting and whilst people were leaving was that customers were being told to move tables when they already had their meal! Very wrong and comes down to poor management. No one should ever be asked to move when they've already been served their food.
The second thing we noticed was that their were 2 available seats on the window which the waitress didn't know were there as their were people standing in front of them waiting for their take away.

We were seated on the large share table after waiting approx 10 minutes and having seen people being moved around to accomodate.

I ordered an almond milk hot chocolate which was $4.5 plus an extra $1 for almond milk which I find a bit much seeing the size and taste wasn't that appealing. My partner ordered a latte which was nice.

For food we ordered the waffle - these were nice and poached eggs on toast which was also nice.

The service really lets this place down. The food is good but nothing wow, I'd definitely say there's better in the area.

This cafe is located in the hub of Hawthorn, and deserves its prime location.
The interior is stunning and airy, with lots of light through its glass windows, and cute booths for diners to enjoy their meals.
The food itself is delicious and there are many healthier options on the menu which is a huge plus for me.
I personally enjoyed the Sauteed Greens, which came on sourdough with halloumi and poached eggs, all of which were cooked to perfection.

Was here the other week. Coffee and food both exceptional, as were the treats we took home. Service was a big let down. Chaotic, as though no one knew what they were meant to be doing, perhaps down to poor management?
Anna Singh
Great cafe located at intersection on Burwood rd and power st , Hawthorn. Straight away greeted with a friendly smile. My food was good. It was tasty and fresh with good side portions. My coffee was average and service was a little slow. I had to catch waitress eye to get attention. Overall the cafe has good atmosphere and vibes.
Connie
Absolutely loved the food!! Service was excellent as well 🙌🏼🙌🏼 I had the whole meal waffles and they tasted so delicious!! Would 100% recommend

Came here on a Sunday and it was super busy but the staff were still attentive and very lovely .The food itself was also delicious and arrived at a prompt speed . I could not be happier to have a
Rustica so close to me as I have been to every one of their other cafes and loved it here just as much
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

Rustica recently opened a new shop in Hawthorn and it has been a godsend for those living in the surrounding inner south east suburbs. A little away from the hustle and bustle of the Glenferrie shopping strip, Rustica is located on the corner of Burwood Road and Power Street and the position allows for a lot of natural light to filter through the floor to ceiling glass walls and light up the store and add a nice natural ambience to the cafe.

Great vibe in this place with the sun streaming in through the windows and great decor inside. The food is reasonably priced and super delicious, highly recommend any of their desserts or pastries, and the waffle with caramel mascarpone, banana and caramel sauce was fantastic. Great, friendly service which catered to all our requests and also great iced coffee. Yet another great addition to the Hawthorn cafe scene!
DamoForce Food
You can't really miss this venue. Right on the corner of the streets. We were greeted with friendly service straight away. Cold drip was good. The pulled pork on the benny really impressed us and the added smoked brisket was very tasty. Sweets were all well done too!

Rustica is the most popular bakery x cafe to pop-up on the brunch scene and with multiple inner city locations they're here to stay. Recently, well perhaps just this May they've opened a canteen in Hawthorn, on the main street consisting of two blocks, and just three blocks away from the house too!

Absolutely loved this place! Brunch was delicious, coffee was good and pastries always so pretty that I can't ever leave without buying some. Pictured are the Nutella croissant and lemon meringue cronut, porridge, chili scrambled eggs and eggs benedict with bacon. Can't wait to go back!

Coffee, food & customer service was faultless the first time I came here!! Was absolutely in love with the eggs bennie w cured trout, very well balanced. Coffee was sublime. Returned and ordered the same meal and unfortunately the standard had dropped. Still a nice meal but hollandaise was so creamy it spoilt the meal. I would however return for round three and try another dish.

My meal was absolutely delicious! There was a wait for a table as they were busy and we went during peak time but the time they gave us for the wait was correct, and once in we were served quickly and efficiently without feeling rushed. Everything tasted delicious and moderately priced. Would recommend and come back!

At first I thought it was just a cafe underneath an office block so I didn't expect much. Then when I looked into it, there are a few Rustica things around. Seemed pretty popular. Got there at 10am on Sunday and couldn't get a table for three, inside so we sat outside.

Food was spectacular! We ordered the panacotta, porridge, and eggs with some sides. Everything was super delicious and really well priced. I actually assumed I would need a pastry for the road after my panacotta, but there was enough muesli to fill me up. My sister said her porridge was "the best porridge I've ever had". Definitely nothing close to the white goop with stewed fruits you'd probably prepare for.

The staff were lovely and professional. Parking in the area is good on a Sunday maybe a bit different during the week. None of us loved our coffee but in saying that, it wasn't enough to put us off. We will be back soon.

Have driven passed this cafe before & was excited to try it! It gets very busy especially on the weekend as you can't book a table. I definitely recommend getting there early or after the peak period.
I tried their matcha maiden latte which was great & everyone else enjoyed their coffees too!

I had the breakfast salad which was delicious & contained quinoa, kale, currents, almonds, sesame dressing & poached egg.
My mum had the wholemeal waffle which wasn't too sweet and were nicely complemented with pear, raspberries, mascarpone & caramel sauce!!
My friend had the smoked chicken sandwich which came with a small potato salad & her mum had the avocado toast which they both enjoyed!

Would love to return to this cafe & try more of their dishes!
Lsph
Love the sandwiches here! They might look small but are extremely filling, and come with an amazingly flavoursome potato salad. Very reasonably priced compared to other brunch joints, and friendly customer service. The only downside is that due to its popularity, there might be a short wait for a table during the busy lunch period.
MrMena
Service was great and the food was fresh and very tasty. I had the greens salad with the chicken as the choice of meat - a must try. Coffee was smooth, I'd be interested to see what blend they use next time I'm in.

Came here today with some work friends for lunch. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table but in the end- it was worth it! I had a skinny latte to start and for lunch I had the winter greens salad with cumin chicken. YUM! I was sold at the mention of hummus and they didn't disappoint with a lovely generous serving of hummus on top! The dressing on the salad was creamy but light and very tasty and the whole salad together was simply delicious.
My friends got the lamb salad and the eggs with bacon mushroom feta (and extra haloumi). They both really enjoyed their meals.
Service was really friendly and the cafe is stylish and modern.

This cafe opened up around the corner from us and I've wanted to try Rustica for a while, so it was perfect! Firstly, the service was amazing! The staff were so friendly and it just makes the whole dining experience that much better, definitely a stand out. I ordered the baba ganoush eggs and it was such a delicious dish, the tomatoes were dusted with herbs which added so much flavour, and the eggs were perfectly poached. Needless to say the addition of halloumi makes any dish better! I was also very impressed by the knife, it was serrated and just made eating and cutting the crispy toast a whole lot easier, sometimes it's the small things that make such a difference! The soy latte I ordered was also delicious, great standard of coffee. I would highly recommend eating here, such a wonderful dining experience and I'll definitely be returning myself.
Andylovestoeat
Probably one of the best smashed avocado's I've had in Melbourne 👌🏼 the only downside was the overwhelming smell of egg in the restaurant.
MomoFoodie
Ordered the egg bennedict with tabasco hollandise, fennel and white radish on pumpkin sourdough with pulled pork. Can't fault anything, it's delicious 👍🏻

This vibrant restaurant in the suburbs of Melbourne fills me with delight. It has a great vibeeee where i can just hang with either ma homies or my granny Gwenda. The almond croissant was simply divine and the filing was superb, it brought me back to my home country, France like nothing before. the almonds were crisp and complimented my tongue, what more could you want? I cannot begin to describe the absolutely perfect persian Ispahan croissant. The rose water lifted me into the heavens itself, the raspberry pleased my taste buds to the max! The creaminess filmed my belly with delight. in conclusion, Rustica is the place to be if your alone, with your whole fam, with your granny Gwenda or your mummy Alberta. The music in the restaurant lifts the vibe and makes we want to jump on the table and dance the night away! Be sure to come here because it's so good i could cry with happiness!! the orange juice i just had was exquisite and the sourdough i can't even begin to explain about! i wish i lived in this vivid restaurant!! #theplacetobePeter Wu

They definitely didn't skimp out on fruit in the granola which is a good plus in my books! The granola was crunchy and was really balanced with the panna cotta. I took some croissants to go and they were so delicious heated up. Would definitely recommend the almond croissant and the Nutella one too! The place is by the main road so lots of natural light and the seating area is also quite spacious.

It was my second time coming here, I was super excited since I enjoyed myself the first time when the staff had been attentive and friendly.
I came back today and now have to downgrade my rating, and i feel like a douche doing it too.... But i ordered a mocha and got a latte, after I pointed it out to the waitress they kinda looked at me and my coffee suspiciously as I might be making it up or mistaken about it actuallybeing amocha (which shouldn't matter because if it was a mocha, it was a terrible one). I was brought new coffee and first thing I thought was are they now messing with me on purpose?? My mocha clearly had about 2 or 3 times the normal amount of chocolate and was undrinkable.

The photo is how my mocha looked when I left the cafe after my friend finished up, you can see how dark it is and that's with a lot of the chocolate having settled.... Even then the coffee was undrinkable and no one seemed fazed by a customer leaving a coffee untouched.

the cronuts were still amazing though.

First opened in 2012 on bustling Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, Rustica has expanded to include its CBD location and most recently Hawthorn, quickly becoming one of the most successful bakery-cafes in Melbourne. Delivering artisan breads, baked using traditional sourdough and time-honoured techniques, delicious house-roasted coffee, contemporary breakfast and lunch menus coupled with a rustic, industrial interior, Rustica’s success speaks for itself.

Came with a friend for Sunday brunch, the place is pretty small, even by normal cafe standards, but luckily it wasn't peak hour and the new cafe isn't that hype yet, so didn't have to wait for a long time. I liked their chilli scrambled eggs, but don't have anything to compare it to since that was my first time. Wasn't impressed enough to wanna order it again though. The breakfast salad was delicious though! Healthy and tasty, definitely tempted to go back for that. Service was soso, not the best but not terrible either. Asked the waitress for a takeaway box and she forgot, so had to ask someone else after waiting a fair bit. Ambience is nice and pretty chill. Will be back!

Came by for brunch on the Queens birthday weekend to check out what Rustica's newest addition had to offer. We walked in and awkwardly stood around for about 5 minutes waiting to catch someone's eye so that we could get a table. Eventually we were seated at a small table in the corner, where we got a nasty cold breeze whenever the door opened.
Foodwise, I had the bircher which was delicious & a very generous portion. It had a perfect balance of creamy, sweet and savory. I'm a sucker for poached fruit & this bircher had a saffron poached pear. It was a little hard for my liking which made it difficult to eat with just a spoon. My friend got the wholemeal waffle and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a bit of food envy! It looked beautiful, and by her account, it was. The coffee was rich and delicious, and was brought to our table promptly. The venue nonetheless was beautifully set up, with a cool vibe.

Food: 4/5
Service: 3/5
Environment: 3.5/5

It’s no secret that I love my little West Hawthorn village and all it has to offer. For the last few years, I’ve watched as the site on the corner of Power St and Burwood Rd has evolved from a late night jazz club, to a pop-up bar, to a busy construction site, and now, in the blink of an eye, it’s re-opened as a luxury apartment block, Maple. And then, in the last few weeks, we’ve witnessed the unveiling of cafe Rustica at the base of this complex.

If you think the name sounds familiar, you’re not wrong. In fact, this is the fourth Rustica establishment to hit our Melbourne streets. Following the initial Rustica Sourdough – a bakery in Fitzroy – Rustica Canteens have opened in the CBD, Richmond and now Hawthorn, and they all feature their very own breads, pastries and cakes. The menu offers an all-day breakfast, and lunch from 11am.

With a bakery at its core, it’s no surprise that sandwiches feature prominently on the lunch menu. But if you’re looking for something lighter and healthier, there’s also a salad selection. Its founders have strong links with some notable new-wave Melbourne cafes (Touchwood and Coin Laundry, to name a couple) and the menu at Rustica reflects this history.

My ‘breakfast salad’ was delicious: fresh, crunchy and full of flavour. With a list of superfood ingredients, it also packs in the nutrients: tri-coloured quinoa, wild rice, kale, rocket, baby spinach, smoked almonds, currants, and goats curd with a sesame dressing, served with a poached egg. A close runner-up on the breakfast menu was the Baba ganoush with grilled haloumi and roma tomatoes, accompanied by poached eggs, greens and sumac salt…and served with a quinoa, soy and linseed sourdough. If these options sound a little too complicated and contemporary for you, then stick to eggs ‘anyway you like’, with a choice of traditional sides – or, perhaps enjoy a pastry from their bakery. If you’re short of time, there’s a good range of takeaway breads, pastries and sandwiches.

Rumble Coffee Roasters supplies the coffee. Personally, I prefer a more traditional espresso, but if you like the flavour of the coffee at these contemporary Melbourne cafes, then this won't disappoint.

With friendly staff and attentive service, Rustica should do well with the locals. There was a great buzz to the place, and I'm looking forward to coming back and sampling some of their bakery items.

Welcome to the neighbourhood, Rustica.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
The Rustica Canteen family has expanded once again, this time taking up residence in the new Maple apartment complex in Hawthorn. Local office workers and residents now have somewhere closer where they can get their hands on Brenton Lang’s drool-worthy baked goods.

Rustica know what they’re doing when it comes to the cafe game in Melbourne. Their CBD and Fitzroy cafes are popular, and their fantastic sourdough is used in many other cafes across the city. The team’s newest cafe, Rustica Canteen Hawthorn, opened recently.

Loved this place and very accomodation, as went to the cafe the social glutton across the road the day before and coffee was rubbish and food terrible but found this new place rustica and as all reporter say it is worth a look , great food and the bread is amazing, good place all around
Must Be Hungry

Rustica's verdict: MBH approved 👌

Great food and atmosphere! An excellent experience. Very friendly and attentive staff during our whole meal. Chilli scrambled eggs was spot on. Most importantly the coffee was strong and full flavoured!

A commercial cafe chain w slick service.

I ordered 2 crossiants, one to eat in w my coffee in house and one for my friend.

My crossiant was quite dense, and quite heavy. Mmnn not what I was hoping for from Rustica Canteen. It tasted like they have used either a really cheap butter or margarine in their crossiants.

I was hoping to buy some bread but the choice was pretty limited by 10am. I guess I slept in haha

The coffee was strong, but milky and overall it tasted pretty average.

The 70's disco music was fun, but a bit early in the morn for a boogie ... at least in a cafe haha

The stools were like stilts. Once you sat down you couldn't move because if you did, they started shaking and you to fell off! It's a poor design and there's an OHS claim headed their way soon!

Overall the service was good, and friendly enough but next time I'm here I'll go across the road and try another cafe. There are heaps of cafes in Burwood Road.
