Review Methodist Coffee - Hawthorn

Chris Priestley
Fantastic fit out and very minimalistic looking place which I feel suits their overall idea and vibe of the place. Coffee was fantastic and lots to choose from. Once again it's great to see a place that roasts their own can live up to the quality of their coffee. Food was great, portions where a little small based on price, however taste, appearance and over flavour was amazing. Also great service and knowledge of menu. Definitely worth trying!

This was absolutely the BEST breakfast/Brunch/Coffee spot I have ever been to!!! The owner Nicky and her son are above and beyond amazing not to mention the beautiful and super delicious food!!! This place is a 10 in my book!

Aaaaaaamazing new little cafe in hawthorn! Super trendy filled with natural light, wooden furnishings and lots of green plants. Upbeat music and a great vibe. Ample seating options; big communal table as well as booths and window tables and even a couple of outdoor tables. Speciality coffee spot on and staff really friendly. šŸ‘šŸ‘

This space is amazing! The coffee is on point, roasted IN HOUSE. So good. Have you tried the fried chicken kimchi waffles?!?!?!? You will not regret it. The food and coffee is one of the best.

Spacious cafe in Hawthorn across from Swinburne uni. The staff were warm and friendly when I arrived, set the tone for a pleasant brunch. The coffee was quite good and the reuben sandwich I had was excellent. There were many nice looking options on the menu and service was reasonably quick. Nice spot.

I have been coming to this cafe for 4 years now while I completed my degree at Swinburne. It is safe to say that this is the best coffee in Hawthorn hands down. The food is always a sensory experience, it always looks and tastes beyond amazing. I highly recommend this cafe as one to travel to or make it your local if you live close by! 11/10. ā˜•ļøšŸ™šŸ¼

A great new spot near Swinburne university. The staff is super friendly and knows a lot about coffee. Loved the brightness of the place, the many plants and the music. One downside is that they don't have any power sockets available, otherwise this would be the best studyplace! I would recommend them to get some power at the big table so people can work and study there :)

I came here about 6 months ago and got a great coffee. Nothing about it was bad. I went back today and was pretty disappointed with what I got. The coffee was burnt and the large wasn't really large. (As you can see from the pic) $4.70 for 3/4 of a coffee. Not great.

I selected the vegan option for "omega smashed avo" - and was told by an older lady that the only difference is they take out the poached egg and feta.

I asked if I could replace the two for mushrooms and was told no and that "I don't know how business works" ... lovely. She even suggested another item on the list that only had "parmesan shard" so I wouldn't be losing much.

I like this place, but the menu needs reworking. And telling customers that they don't know how business works, isn't going to give you business...

If offering a vegan menu, at least replace the items that you're taking out if you're going to keep the same price. I don't want to pay extra for nothing. Perhaps this lady actually doesn't know how business works. Thanks

Coffee was not bad, the the staffs there, were super unfriendly, there have lots of good CafĆ©s in Hawthorn, you donā€™t actually need to go there,

We were around Hawthorn area and my husband found this place. He was searching for good coffee and this popped out. We were greeted warmly on a cold Saturday morning. We were seated straightaway as the whole place was not that busy. We decided to have a large flat white and I had the pumpkin and corn Fritters while my husband had the mushroom dish. Coffee was already good. Anything with pumpkin is my favourite and this one did not disappoint. It was cooked perfectly! Not too oily and was just absolutely delicious! My husband loved his meal too. This place should be recognised more. I have to say thank you to the staff before we left just because we had an amazing meal. I will definitely be back and will recommend to everyone I know!

Great food and friendly staff. This place makes one of the best fresh brewed chai and it tastes amazing. The breakfast options and portion size is generous. Might be a bit crowded at peak times but their service has been exceptional.

Unfortunately since I last ate here, portion size has shrunk (one painfully thin slice of toast with my breakfast order) and there is no longer any table service. It's not a relaxing way to spend brunch, standing behind a bunch of people ordering takeaways so you can order your food and drinks. Quality of food was not great either, toast burnt all around edges (probably because it was so thin) and the feta I got was clearly the scrapings of the tub because it was just thin and oily and grainy, there wasn't actually any chunks of feta at all. Prices have stayed the same or gone up though, of course. A pretty disappointing devolution really.

Wasnā€™t the greatest cafe experience. The sign on the door said they were open until 4pm so we were surprised to be told the kitchen was closed (the time was 14.05). We settled for coffee and carrot cake. Coffee was ok, the cake was dry. A drink that was served to our table by a waitress with her finger inside the glass made me screw my nose up but this drink was also with a metal straw. Inside the straw were dishwasher remains, visible from both ends - so decided not to use this. With approx 1.5 hours trade still remaining and 12 other diners whilst we were there, I was astounded when a staff member started sweeping, mopping and putting stools on top of the large central table which still had people sitting at. We left disappointed at the general lack of care and basic service standards. Wonā€™t be heading back.

We came back for food, and they were pretty delicious! The chicken in the burger was juicy a d tender. Will come back to try other dishes.

-------
We didn't eat here, so we can only say that their coffee was perfect to our taste. My hubby loved his flat white and I really enjoyed my long black. My long black had a great falvour, smells great and legend a warm after taste

I came to Methodist coffee to showcase some of Melbourneā€™s best coffee to family who were visiting from interstate. We had been to this place many times, including with extended family before and witnessed one of the staff being very rude to customers but still enjoyed their iced lattes more than surrounding cafes. We ordered three takeaway coffees and the lady that took our order got one of the coffees wrong. This is not usually a problem as I went to go and rectify the situation, she snapped back, stating ā€œwe didnā€™t order a takeaway iced latteā€, that we were ā€œconfusing with our orderingā€ and that she was not wrong when processing our orders. As a person that works in the service industry, I understand this response to a customer is not only incredibly rude, but despicable service. I WILL NOT be returning to this cafe as this behaviour simply isnā€™t good enough, especially when staff are much more friendly at other comparable locations. Disappointing experience once here, even when the rest of the staff have been lovely to us as regulars before this incident.

My heart skips a beat whenever I walk past Methodist. As you enter the light filled cafƩ, you are instantly enveloped in the enticing aroma of the magical elixir that is coffee. Their beans are roasted on site and only high grade, transparent origins are used, so you can enjoy each cup with a clear conscience. An array of tempting treats, such as flaky croissants, creamy pistachio cupcakes and raw vegan slices, are also on display at the counter to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Stumbled upon this place on our way to a different cafe, had no expectations and ordered my usual coffee (LB). LB was brewed perfectly, not steaming up and flavour and intensity on point. Then my partners cold brew arrived, oh lord it was delicious. I had coffee envy for sure but was still very happy with my LB.

Food:
Smashed avo with smoke salmon on the side. So much flavour, loved how they whipped the feta. This cafe took the avo to the next level by adding corn and onions. So much flavour, I ate the whole dish!
Partner ordered the granola with coconut milk. It was so delicious, and for someone who doesnā€™t have a sweet tooth or ever orders sweet dishes for breakfast, the whole blow was eaten up!

Ambience of the cafe is super airy, and the service was friendly and laidback. Oh, and the speed from ordering to getting your food, super speed!

Happy to come back every weekend for these coffees!

Usually I have reservations on pulled beef/pork burgers and thatā€™s because they tend to be dried out by time it serves to your table. This dainty coffee infused 16hr cooked beef burger was a winner. Meat was moist, saucy and rich. More importantly, it melts in my mouth. YUMS! The sidekicks: Sesame bun, potato crisp and slaw complemented well giving the hero aka Coffee Beef a credit which it deserves.
p/s: Their coffee was amazing too. Enough said.

Spacious and airy cafe with tasty menu and accommodating staff. Feeling like something light I went for the panacotta with granola, fresh fruit and coconut butterscotch sauce. The granola was delicious mix of flavours and textures but the coconut butterscotch sauce was the major highlight.

Average food, inattentive staff. The place wasnā€™t very busy and yet it took them more than half an hour to get the food to us. We had to follow up, probably forgot the orders.

Came here for a coffee for the second time today. Had a delicious filter which had one of the best cups Iā€™ve ever been served in. The coffee was delicious too. Sat outside with my dog. And they had a little bowl of water for him. The waiter who looked after our table was awesome, perfect combo of not over the top and super friendly. We shared the raspberry and banana toast which was delicious.
Lovely airy modern cafe with an interesting menu and twists on known classics.Ā

I had the mushroom croque and it was a very flavoursome filling and lovely dish. I missed a bit of more texture in it, but it was really good and an original mix of flavours and ingredients.

They have a coffee menu, so I guess coffee is their speciality. However, my coffee was OK. I always have mine without sugar, so I notice the flavour, intensity and milkiness of it. This one I got was too milky and too mild to be my cup of tea.

Friendly service and staff.

Quiet crowd.

I enjoyed my visit.

**4.5 stars** I find myself coming back here time and time again. What can I say? I love it here. I always choose the same dish - Avo Smash - but I make sure to try some of the others when my friends order them. The ambience inside really lifts up your spirit. Not to mention, the wonderful service. **NOTE: 2% surcharge on card.

This place is so self consciously hipster it may well be a parody of Melbourne cafe culture.
The coffee was weak, the espresso butter serving didn't even cover one piece of my two pieces of toast and there were globules of rancid butter in the mixture.
Why was I eating espresso butter? Because there was no vegemite only misomite.

Went to try their new autumn menu. I have to say I havenā€™t had this kind of good burger for long long long time. I am not a fan of pull meat but this pull beef burger tastes juice, smoky, melting in your mouth and you can taste their coffee flavour inside the meat as well. Always love the cold brew there. The downside is the cracker/flatbread is not crunchy in soft shell crab dish, a bit chewy. I donā€™t know if it supposes like that.

After recently moving to Melbourne and starting studying at Swinburne, Methodist is now my second home :)
Amazingly presented and tasty food, with great service and outstanding coffee. What more could you want!
Fair Newly opened cafe/brunch spot for good coffee. It was located inside a big white wall building near university in Hawthorn.
Methodist Coffee is not only a cafe but also a roaster. Customer can wander through into the roastery.
The coffee there was not bad, from classic white coffee to cold drip/or single origin coffee, there were lots of choices.
There were some interesting items on the food menu
#16hr cold drip coffee beef burger#-the burger was massive, with so much beef meat inside, also served with candied bacon, aged cheddar and air-dried tomato. However, the beef was little bit dry and chewy, not as good as we expected. It was just an average burger for me.
#kimchi chicken waffle#-kimchi flavour waffle topped with fried chicken pieces in sweet/chilli sauce, served with kimchi and syrup. I do like the ideas using kimchi, make the dish more interesting. The waffle was nice &the chicken was tender, but the crunchy coating was little hard. Also the syrup didnā€™t go very well with the waffle.
#pork belly bun#-served with wasabi avocado, dried seaweed, crushed peanuts. The bun itself was not fluffy enough, and the pork was taste little bit hard, just not tender enough. To be honest, I was disappointed. Iā€™ve had much better bun in Melbourne. NOT recommend.

Food, coffee, and service all great. Even simple things on the menu are done well, and their gluten free bread is GF Precinct's, which is delicious. Well worth the trip if you're a coeliac craving some decent bread! The only minor criticism I have is that their menu is not labelled with dietaries. I think if GF, Vegan, Veg, etc were indicted on the menu it would be a little more appealing for those who look it up online beforehand to have an idea of their options, and also for when you are present so you don't have to ask a lot of questions before ordering.

Been here several times since they opened. Consitently good coffee and food. Very friendly and insightful staff, and i always leave with a smile!

The coffee is world class, as good as any in this city and the coffee choices on offer are comprehensive. As for the food, well we had the benedict which was both tasty and an interesting interpretation , using sausage and greens. The service is top notch and it is a beautiful space. A little more diversity on the menu would round things out nicely but this is an excellent new addition to the glorious variety of cafes in Hawthorn.

Welcome Methodist!! Iā€™ve been here a few times for a take away coffee and when I dined in, ordered the pumpkin bread, smashed avocado and whipped feta....Delicious!! It was a fresh, well portioned dish and had good textures working together. Coffee is delicious; however, have experienced some (minor) inconsistencies between baristas. Try to cold drip coffee on a hot day, beautifully presented and so refreshing!! Welcome to the neighbourhood and keep up the great work!!

The 2.5 rating on here is ridiculous! This place has good coffee and food and is easily one of the best options in the area. Pretty nice fit out as well.

I was very disappointed with hygiene at Methodist Coffee and the apathetic response that I got from their staff when I complained.

Whilst sipping on a coffee at Methodist Coffee this afternoon I felt a solid object in my mouth. When I spat it out, I found that it was a fly. I then informed the barista who replied that it happens. It was obvious that it does happen as there were lots of flies buzzing around the restaurant and probably laying their eggs on the food that they serve.

I have traveled around the world and visited many third world countries, but I have never seen such disregards for hygiene before.

Came in late morning on Sunday. Nice cosy place. Service was prompt. Good coffee. Ordered the blackened cauliflower and was very impressed with the food. Crispy on the outside, soft inside, and combined with the cheese, it was great. Will def come again.

Discovered this place just a few weeks ago and have been coming back several times. Simple yet lovely interior decoration. Coffee tastes a bit different and super nice. Food is fresh and yum. My favorite is omega smash avocado. Highly recommended!

GREAT COFFEE, and even better food!

The cafe looks great, and has a super great vibe. So many smiles, and natural light.

Will definitely be back, and this will possibly be my new favourite!

Great coffee. Great food. Diverse menu. Never have to wait long for service and the staff are really friendly. Iā€™ve been back 5 times already and plan many more trips because this place is a winner šŸ˜Š

Visited a newish coffee shop in the heart of new apartment & Swinburne University Territory.
A very large open space in a heritage corner building.
This cafe / roasters here will definitely be enjoyable for many.
The long black coffee was a delightful creation using beans that had wonderful fruity smooth and creamy feel in your mouth. ( a bit of education regarding the coffee served would further stake this places expertise in coffee roasting )
Could build their bean sales this way!
Marian and I did feel that the noise levels seemed extremely high.
Unfortunately this doesnā€™t create a comfortable cosy feel as everyone was trying to outdo the next table to be heard.
Great food which was served with generous helpings full of flavours and elegant plate-ups.
Welcoming people working hard with smiling faces that conveyed confidence & pride. Do visit as I think the focus will ensure improvements in the near future.
Being a local I've now tried Methodist quite a few times. The smashed avo is delicious. Usually the staff and young girl with short hair is great. Unfortunately today was the last time I'd visit this cafe. The older lady who was working today i had not met before. She saw us at the door and didn't greet us. She then didn't even say hello and said you can just sit there in a very rude tone. We had to complain about our coffees and the owner/barista didn't care. The mushrooms dish was extremely bland. When we went to pay the lady made us feel extremely uneasy with her rude and sarcastic attitude, even when just asking for the receipt she made us feel like we were a burden. Disappointing as I live only a few streets down.

Walking past, youā€™re like ā€œHello?!?! Whatā€™s this thing here then? A CafĆ©???? It is!ā€; Methodist is the new kid on the block, and itā€™s bloody amazing!

It was such a beautiful day, I sat down at one of the window tables, and ordered the fried chicken and kimchi waffles, and a long black. As I waited, I took it all in. That FRESH NEW CAFƉ SMELL.

The fit out is amazing. So spacious, white, bright, plants, and it just has a great vibe. The walls of windows really make it something special; and how about that communal table. Itā€™s baller.

The coffee arrived, and it was perfect. Crema: Check. You know a good coffee place by the way they make their long blacks. And this place is good. I spied a roaster in the backā€¦ They roast their own beans? Thatā€™s some next level ish.

The fried chicken arrived, and oh my god, it was amazing! There was some sort of maple-miso syrup that you can drizzle over, and it makes it so bloody good. #FriedChickenForBreakfast Seriously, Iā€™ll be coming here every week and eating this. I donā€™t care.

Actually, Iā€™ve been back a few times, and tried some other sweets and savouries on the menu. How good is the Mixed Business!?!?!?!? Dat smoked sausage tho *drool*

This really is my new favourite place. The food is great, the service is great, and best of all, the vibe is great. Itā€™s a nice place to just eat and chill. Oh, did I mention thatā€¦

YOU CAN SIT ON THE BLEACHERS AND WATCH THE KITCHEN, AND WATCH COFFEE BEING ROASTED.

Yeah. Where else in Melbourne can you do that? No where, thatā€™s where.
Georgina Leslie
Great service, food and coffee. A great addition to the neighbourhood. The roasted cauliflower dish is delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Really nice relaxing ambiance. The coffee and food came out really quickly and service was good. Definitely coming back to try the delicious looking iced teas!

Melbourne's religious war continues ...

Methodist sectarians are growing in numbers, the "uncompleted" venue is two months young and it was buzzing mid-morning.
Spacious, it has room to grow.

They are serious about their coffee beans and method of extractions, hence
the growing cult numbers. For non-caffeine lover, they make proper Chai latte too.

Corner block, natural light through those big glass windows, minimalist, white washed, booth, big communal timber table .... very comfortable and enjoyable place to be, we just have to wait for the Anglicans, Catholics and the rest to follow suit. JT-31/10/2017.

Beautiful space and beautiful decor. Good coffee and nice menu. Service from Milla has been exceptional - I no longer need to order as she remembers. Just what Hawthorn needed!

Dominated by hipster retro people that can not even be spoken to. I'd rate this place 0 if I could. Staff are not friendly, very bad food and coffee is not that great. Not worth your money. I'll never go back again.
Stephanie
This place is gorgeous and obviously still not complete as there was a large empty back section of the cafe, where we sat on tiered seating awaiting our table. I ordered the fried chicken and savory waffle with miso maple syrup, which was amazing but a bit heavy for a brunch. The portion size was ginormous compared to my friend who ordered a tiny piece of supermarket looking bread with what appeared to be a single scrambled egg and some tiny pieces of ordinary bacon (pictured in the background of my fried chicken). My other friend ordered fried eggs on toast with avocado which looked quite plain although she said it was tasty. The coffee was nice.

Went here as a group and none of us enjoyed our meals or coffees. The deli sandwich was ok, but not great with weird tasting mustard. My partner ordered poached eggs and they arrived absolutely cooked through. I can't imagine how they would let that leave the kitchen. Staff were nice and bought him a new set of eggs that were much better but still overall a disappointing experience.

With competition changing all around you - you've got to be transparent and versatile with your menu.

The coffee here is good - and the staff/service are exceptional. However, the balance in the dishes is confused - the pumpkin dish was bland and the flavours didn't really work together (my mate ordered this). I ordered the mixed business dish, which was marginally better. I was disappointed in the slab of pumpkin placed before us. It could've been better: but it does definitely need a mix up as there are flavour clashes present. The macadamia nuts do not go.

Keep at it, with such high quality cafes in the area it is a challenge in itself to stand out.
Melbrunchin
Not bad, still a lot to learn. Menu not very versatile. Did not enjoy my dish with the pumpkin at all, it just didn't work together and I couldn't finish it let alone start it. Was not worth $18. However coffee was nice!

Loved this place! The food was great - My partner had the burger and loved it - it was big and tender with lots of flavour. I had the 'omega' avo smash which was delicious - the whipped feta on it was amazing. The staff were really friendly too - and the coffee they roast themselves which is yummy. Will definitely be back soon.

Methodist Coffee has only been open under two weeks, but feels like a well oiled machine! Competent staff certainly assists the newby stage! The light filled cafe with lots of white and green is definitely a peaceful haven. A selection of seating, tables, booths and a super expansive communal table means there are plenty of options for any number of diners. The menu showcases a lot of usual cafe fare, but in some new and creative ways. There is a substantial coffee menu (fairly sure they roast or will roast their own beans) the cappuccino and chemex were very good.šŸ˜Š All the items we chose - Omega Avo smash, toastie and the 16-hour braised beef burger were delicious, and would not hesitate to recommend šŸ˜ Staff were all very friendly and attentive, a great lunch was had and we will definitely return.
Sophie
I went here for first time on Saturday, and for such a new place, everything was perfect! Warm, personable service, great menu selection and wonderful coffee. The pea fritters with smoked trout were a hangover godsend -enough to cure me for dessert! Definitely my new breakfast local.

Beautiful venue, delicious food and great service - I had a single origin Rwandan long black on recommendation by the barista, very happy with the choice - lots of flavour!
Will be back next time with my friends šŸ˜€
