Review D'tandoor - Hawthorn

Mary Mitchell
Went in to order today for the first time And holy god do I feel robbed I ordered 2 curries and some rice and was charged 51 dollars for it. At this point I was thinking maybe it’s pricey but must be because the food is fresh or cooked to order ? Sike The chef literally comes out of the kitchen scoops some curry that has been sitting there all day so over 12 hours Warms it up in a pan and gives it to me. I know a lot of Indian places do this But they definitely don’t charge such prices for warmed up food that was cooked yesterday or 12 hours before and been just sitting in a cooler

Update on 15/07/2022: Visited after nearly 3 years. Great food, good hospitality. Will be back. -------- I am actually on the fence of it. We have had food here at least 4 times and the last time they completely messed up. The first 3 were amazing. The fourth time was a pick-up order and the guy who took it did not bother telling others. So, in order to complete my order quickly, the butter chicken resulted into a sweet, strangely tasting chicken dish. Having said that, if instructed well, they cook a really nice meal. Especially Lamb rogan josh or chicken curry. I love their samosa's too.

An outstanding local restaurant. The decor is basic but who cares because the food was beautiful - light, aromatic and flavoursome. Cooked fresh. One of the.beat Indian meals I've ever eaten. The fish tikka was excellent

I have no idea why this restaurant doesn't have a higher rating. I always get mixed veggie curry and it is delicious and so flavoursome! They also have the best bhel puri I've had in Melbourne. It's atypical but quirky.

You should try Chicken Sagg, it was great. Also their Nann is my favorite!! Very thick and soft (I'm not a big fun of thin crispy one). The price isn't cheap but ok. We're neighbor so we'll come back to support.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Do not place an order through uber eats. The restaurant deliveries their own food and will never arrive. Even after calling them 5+ times and waiting 2.5 hours

Had a worst experience in this so called restaurant where staff don’t know how to treat the customers and they might win a competition of a rudest behaviour in Melbourne. I would suggest to stay hungry rather than going in this restaurant.

It was Perfect. The lamb in the saag was sooo plump and tender. I've never had a better samosa. Wrapped perfectly, delivered by a charming, well dressed gentleman. Thankyou!

This is the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne , hands down. If you would like to eat authentic Indian food, try this place. The food is really tasty and spicy like it supposed to be. I hope this place will continue to keep up its food's quality and not towards pleasing local customers by making bland food like some Indian restaurants do. Keep up the good work.

Took an hour for the food to arrive and all the food came cold. Wasn't worth the money or the wait.

Best Indian resturant ever. I tried more luxurious and expensive restaurants, but this one was much better than anything I’ve tried. I love their Butter Chicken and Cheese naan
Kate Antosik
My fav Indian restaurant :) nothing else compares!

Simple little place easy to drive past and miss but awesome food you will return

Went there on a Friday at 12.30 because their brochures stated there is a $15 per person all you can eat deal between 12pm-3pm. We were informed after we arrived that the deal had finished, notwithstanding the fact that the restaurant was still advertising the deal on all of their brochures. Didn't bother arguing about the false advertising, just walked out. Absolutely pathetic.

I ordered Uber Eats from D’Tandoor before seeing their rating on Zomato’s. Quite a few people had recently given the place a 1 star which I normally reserve only for restaurants where I get ill or provide such dire service I don’t even hang around for dinner. I’m glad I wasn’t put off by those low ball ratings because I had an enjoyable lunch delivered today. I ordered the half butter chicken half rice and naan deal. For starters the naan was exceptionally soft and fresh. The butter chicken itself had plenty of chicken and that familiar butter chicken taste. It was a quite mild version of this mild curry and I would have preferred a little more spice heat. Not the perfect curry but definitely a tasty one.

Just ordered from here tonight, genuinely the worst indian food I've had in my life. I'm Sri Lankan and this was simply atrocious curry, their so called 'Dal Tarka' & 'Butter Chicken' their 'trending' food items were almost inedible. Dal Tarka was water, butter chicken was so runny it was dripping like water out of a facet. Their plain white rice was the best part of the large meal deal I ordered. Anyway if you feel like curry, order from somewhere anywhere, where everyone in the kitchen at least has some taste buds. Thank you.

Really bad experience <br/>Not worth the price.<br/>Bad taste order papri chat, panner butter masala and cheese naan.<br/>Leaving the naan all was lacking taste.<br/>Papri chat needs to be with lot yoghurt which was absent.<br/>Not at all hygienic staff don’t use gloves to prepare food.

Worst place ever been. Too slow. Too bad staff. I kept waiting for my food and the person who took my order forgot about my order. After my 20 minutes waiting , they started preparing my food and when they served me , it was too cold and old. Nobody appologized and no compensation. :(

The worst biryani ever. Never going back. The restaurant didnt even respond properly when we complained. Horrible experience. The food was extremely bland

Never going back. We walked in and smiled at the man behind the counter who was looking at us. He didn't smile back or acknowledge us. We grabbed a table, I went to grab a menu. I only saw a take away menu & asked another guy if this was for eating in too. He said 'it's the same', with no expression. He continued to eat his food while the other guy talked on his phone. We felt unwelcomed so walked out. It's a shame cause we went last year & had friendly service from different workers, and the food was nice though small.

The quality and taste of any dish you order here is really good. We had combo meals of chicken+naan, veg thali, chana bhatura among other dishes. But the quantity of curry and size of partha and naan in the thali is less. But the taste and flavor of all the Indian curries be it dal, chana masala, chicken korma, mutton is with good flavor.
Zee
Nothing special here. The food is alright and for the quality the price you pay is too much. Butter chicken is probably the worst in town, never cooked properly and there Biryani is a joke. Go here only when this is the last option you are left with in Hawthorn.

The ambience of the place is quite relaxing and positive. Perhaps this is to do with the warm yet professional behavior of the staff and the awesome menu!

We went to the The D Tandoor restaurant a few months back and have been in love with the place. Since then, we have been going there several times. My pals and I like the food, the starters, the service, and pretty much everything.

I’d love to come back here again! The D Tandoor restaurant is an amazing place if you wish to enjoy authentic India food. I like to recommend others.
Mia Thompson
The food here is superb! My wife and I have a nice lunch here and were amazed at the quality of food, the professional service and the pocket friendly prices.

Freshly made nice suffed paranthas. Naan thali and daal curry was good. Value for money food. Decor and place looks ordinary but atleast the food is better than few fancy Indian restaurants around. Overall i would go again and again and recommend to anyone who crave for decent freshly made indian dishes for money value.
Emily JONES
Love this place. It has become our standard "I can't be bothered cooking" dinner. The food is great and very reasonably priced, our only problem is arguing over which dishes to order...I recommend the lamb madras :)

Excellent Points. I’ve tried these and have gained a good amount of traffic. I use mainly app and also found HootSuite another good tool for scheduling and social sharing.

I love going to D' Tandoor for takeaway, and regularly travel from Glen Iris for it. The food is amazing and very reasonably priced. Whilst the ambiance inside the restaurant is not great, the service is very good. You cannot beat D'Tandoor for Indian food in Melbourne.

Well presented restaurant - surprisingly good!. Pretty simple interior that looks 'takeaway' so dining-in was a bit of a test. Surprising to us, the meals were really well presented and they tasted really good! Came as a group of four, had BYO wine and it came to less than $20 pp for a delicious feed.

I gotta say, when you are absolutely begging to survive, begging, to live, and ordering Uber Eats is the only energy you have left, to get a spick of hope, a quee of potential, to maybe, perhaps pull through, D'Tandoor is possibly, if not thee best, one off the best delivery experiences I've ever, had. I'm alive. First time ordering tonight. Un-believable. Goat Curry. 10. Black Lentil Dal. 10. Rice. 10. And, peddled at the speed of light straight to my door, in 25 minutes! At 6pm. On a Saturday. Straight from the stove. <br/><br/>If I said I was delighted, I'd be lying. I'm bedazzled.

When it comes to cheap eats Indian is often the cuisine to go for, full of herbs and spices it's always a good deal - in a set. Especially for lunch! In the next town over on Fridays D'Tandoor does an All-You-Can-Eat Lunch for just $13.50! On the same block at Glenferrie Station and close to the student town of Swinburne. Where there are students, there are cheap eats.
All Mountain Pass
Cheap and delightful takeaway option. Wouldn't recommend eating in cause it can get super smoky inside and not much of an atmosphere. <br/>I ordered the Palak paneer which could have used a little more depth of flavour but overall satisfying, and the butter chicken which was perfect.

Yummmmyyyyyy yyyyuuuuummmmyyyyyy iiinnnn mmmmyyyyyy tuuummmmyyy. Tasty food, efficient delivery service, used to be my go to before moving!!

Highly disappointed. The food was supposed to arrive at 12.00pm and it arrived almost 2 hours late. The food arrived around 1.50pm. I tried to call the restaurant several times to check on the unacceptable delay but they did not answer the phone. I suppose they knew it was me who was calling. Shocking! <br/><br/>I wanted to speak with the delivery person to express my disappointment for such a long delay but the food was delivered to me by an unaccompanied little child. The boy must have been around 10 years so I did not and could not have a discussion regarding the delay. I'm sure it was a planned delivery as they knew an adult will never confront a child. Shocking! <br/><br/>I have ordered from D'Tandoor numerous times and every single time my food arrived late and cold. I have waited for over an hour every single time. This is not the first time and it won't be the last. They never phone to tell that they are getting late or to apologize for the delay. It's always me, the customer that phones them to check on the delay. They always say the food is on the way but it takes more than 40 minutes from the time I speak to them for the food to arrive which means the food was not on the way when I spoke to them. They always lie. They should not be delivering food if they cannot deliver on time. <br/><br/>Awful service!!! Enough is enough! Never again am I ordering food from D'Tandoor and don't recommend this place to anyone.

Have been going here for years. It may look a little dodgy from the outside but I don't think there is a better butter chicken and naan bread in Melbourne. The lamb vindaloo is pretty awesome too as are the samosas. Service can be a bit hit and miss but the meal deals are fantastic value.
Yuiisama
Come for their all you can eat lunch special on a Friday (only available on Fridays) and fill yourself up on their declious butter chicken and naan. Totally worth it. They also provide salad and yoghurt on the side for the buffet.<br/><br/>The meal deals are decently priced if you're craving curry during the week.
VolcanoGirl
Consistently good Indian food. They do an excellent palak/saag paneer (spinach & cottage cheese) curry, and the malai kofta is very tasty too. Naan is very good, as with the lamb kebab.
Vivek Bala
The place is Small and decent to seat in. The buffet here is Okayish there weren't upto the mark, forr Biryani the spiciness & aroma weren't enough to call it biryani. Service was good.

Not impressed. We ordered 2 simple curries with a side of naan and rice to be delivered to our residence (located less than 10 minutes from the restaurant) and had to call the business after waiting over an hour to check on the status of our meals. We were then told it would be another 15 minutes. Overall, we waited longer than an hour and a half. We were also a little disheartened when the deliverer did not apologise for the wait on arrival. Starving, we tucked in, only to discover a large hair and several small bones in our butter chicken curry, as well as undercooked vegetables and minimal sauce in our vegetarian masala. Quite disappointing after the day we'd had, when all we wanted was a delicious, hearty curry.
Penguineats
Pretty much everything was ‘just fine’. Nothing was outstanding, good nor bad. Both curries were on the mild side. The saag could’ve had more flavour and seemed a bit watered down. The tenderness of the chicken however saved this dish. The goat curry overall was not bad. Fairly aromatic and had decent flavours of a rich red Indian curry. But this was let down by the toughness of the goat as it was not slow cooked in.

Easily one of the best INDIAN food available in of the town. I am a vegeterian and I love thier PANEER TIKKA. I love the taste of it.<br/><br/>Tried the GARLIC CHEESE NAN.... wasnt as good as the BUTTER OR GARLIC NAN. <br/><br/>I will recommend take away steongly as well.
Sohil Kakadia
Went with family, ordered Manchurian dry and we were not able to eat single piece due to bad taste. Veg Kadai was just prepared from mix Dal. It was first and last time
Rachelle.leaver56
Excellent food. Everything had a unique flavour and was well spiced. Highly recommend the chilli paneer and eggplant and potato curry. Definitely give it a try. Well worth it!!

Extremely disappointing! The food struggled to be even average. It was luke warm. We had lamb vindaloo and chicken curry. The best part of the meal was the naan. It was actually freshly cooked. The rest came out of the bain maree and had probably been there all day. I suppose the fact that no one else was in the place should have been a warning. Don't go there!!
Carmen Ho
Had butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka and naans. Taste was good but the sauce was watery. Would have preferred thicker sauce to eat with the naans.
Paige
We weren't happy. The restaurant was extremely dirty, customer service was poor, portion sizes were pathetic (with literally 2 pieces of meat in one of our curries) and the menu says $9 for 2 curries and a nan. We chose this option only to be told that it's a dollar extra for 2 curries. Not that we minded - it just doesn't make sense. <br/>Curries were flavourless and the meat was over cooked.<br/>Will definitely never be back.

Me and my friend had lunch at Hawthorn D'tandoor restaurant we encountered terrible customer service by poor cashier and staff member who almost took almost 45 min to serve our food as food was average quality but quantity was good enough for individual. however, ones we finished our lunch we went for payment where poor cashier more than 5min to finalizes the payment as he was finding items in register. Its seem lack of focus toward customer, terrible customer service.<br/>Food 7/10<br/>Value of money 8/10<br/>staff 1/10( no welcome msg, no thanks , no encouragement)<br/>waiting period 2/10
Epicurious
Ambience 5/10<br/>Food 6/10<br/>Staff 7/10<br/>Waiting 8/10<br/>Value for money 6.5/10<br/><br/>Hawthorn in itself is a paradise for Indian food cravers and competing with a number of similar cuisine restaurants D'tandoor seems to be doing not too bad for themselves. The safest bet if you're looking at value for your bucks would be the standard thali which comes with 2 curries and rice/bread. Butter chicken curry is somewhat acceptable although the chicken may be imperfectly cooked at times. The portions are petty and can be improved on. Garlic naan deserves a special mention though! They can also improve on the quality of salad which comes with the thali as its usually not as fresh. <br/>The music is fun though, takes you back in the bollywood and yo yo mode! :)<br/><br/>

Not Indian food. Watery curries with boiled chicken. Pathetic

Amazing food, consistency in providing the quality food.<br/>Best eats- chicken tikka masala, barra kabab, chilli chicken, chicken naan, papri chaat, biryani. I keep visiting the same place since 5 years now.

It's the worst one, cheating!!!..How did they call it Biriyani?. I have ordered a chicken biriyani with my friends who ordered some set menu with rice..what I've got is the same plane rice and the chicken curry that my friend ordered, they have just mixed the chicken curry and the rice with some peeper on it and served this as a biriyani...It's cheating on the open road..their price is even higher than any other restaurant on the same street..their other food quality is also low and they did serve food cooked earlier..who know may be one week earlier...don't sit there to be cheated..thanks
James
I love this place! Such a great Indian atmosphere and vibe. The food is great and people there are really nice. Service has always been quick and friendly for me. Recommend it!

Ironically, do yourself a favour and steer well clear of anything from their Tandoor. We tried a bit of everything and the meat was dry as a bone. Flavour was woefully average too. Couldn't eat a thing. Their butter chicken was OK though as was their onion bhaji. That said I'm not sure I'd be going back in a hurry.

Professional Service. Did a wonderful job in catering for an office function for 50 people. The variety of curries and condiments were all delicious. Everyone in the team loved the food and even went for seconds. They arrived on-time, which is very important when organising an office function.

Average food with some exceptions. D'tandoor is one of the better indian restaurants in Hawthorn. Their consistent service keeps me coming back but from experience I have learned to not trust everything on the menu. <br/>The naan's are exceptionally good whilst the curry often comes too spicy with questionable looking meat. <br/>I've only ever ordered take away but from what I've experienced whilst briefly being inside, the customer service could be improved. <br/>Overall, good food if you know what to order but don't expect too much.

Ordered food 40 minutes ago. Still waiting for food. Had to ask for water too. Not even busy here.

Got dinner from them through Menulog <br/>Excellent flavours. The Garlic Naan was yumm , the Paneer Butter Masala and Dal Makhani were creamy and right amount of spicy . Generous portion size. Will Deffinately be ordering from them again

Worst Indian food and service in Mellbourne. D'Tandoor serves the worst Indian food I have eaten in Melbourne. The naan was inedible - cold, rubbery and oily. It felt like I was chewing on leather from a sofa. They rubbed what appeared to be store-bought garlic paste in patches on the naan. The curry dish (korma) had almost no flavour.<br/>They even managed to ignore the only request I had submitted with the order - that there should be no yogurt in the samosa chat since I am allergic. <br/>Do not trust the ingredients that they write in the menu descriptions, they are far from accurate. They sent a replacement when I called, but were completely unapologetic.<br/>The last time that I had ordered from this place, they combined 2 different curry dishes in the same take-away box! By the time I opened the box the food was all mixed up and tasteless.
Mrgoodtaste
Paneer dishes are great- delicious and cheap.
Cat69
Worst Indian food I've had. The curry was mostly sauce and not much else. The dumplings were gluggy and bland. And the garlic naan tasted of raw garlic. I won't be going back.
Urbanette
Disappointing. Had curry from here. Not very happy as I received a curry with a lot of sauce with barely anything in it. The sauce also had a pretty bland taste.<br/><br/>Will not eat food from here again.
Jabba
Bought a takeaway butter chicken with rice and garlic naan .. service was good but food was average . butter chicken was to sweet and to watery . naan and rice were ok
Kat
Hangover cure delux. Friendly service, and as stated in the title, the perfect cure for those times you wake up on Saturday evening after a very long Friday night. Try the tandoori mushrooms.<br/><br/>Will eat again.
Flik Schemmer
Nice flavour.... Value - plenty of deep fried entrees and I wasn't too sure about the occasional gristle, but I guess I'm too fussy.
Melbourne Lifestyle Blog
The malai kofta was very creamy and spicy. The dumplings were moist and dense. The gravy was extremely flavoursome.
