Review Hanoi Old Quarter - Hawthorn

Very tasty pho broth! The north Vietnamese style is different to your typical pho in Melbourne! It is a welcomed change to what I'm used to!

The best Pho from North of Vietnam! Love the broth and good service. Chi is so kind and cares about all customers. Love her! :*

A hidden gem! My partner and I usually travel out to Springvale and Footscray for pho, but now we know we can have some delicious Hanoi-style pho, spring rolls, braised pork with rice, and iced coffee, at a homey, welcoming restaurant with great service that is a lot closer to home.

Bad... I'm from Hanoi. I ate the authentic Ly Quoc Su noodle so many times in my life. Pho in this restaurant is ways different. The noodle is supposed to be fresh but they used dried noodle. The soup isn't good either. It also took very long (for my friend) to get a chicken noodle even though there were only a few customers. Their toilet was horrible, too dirty. Staffs were friendly though.

Firstly, the young male staff member was exceptionally lovely. He went out of his way to help us, without needing to ask (sharing bowls, more water etc). The wow moment was understanding the difference between northern and southern style Vietnamese cuisine. The majority of Vietnamese restaurants around Melbourne are southern style. Old quarter is northern style. The chicken pho broth was amazing. So "chickeny". We are definitely going back

Very good food, fresh and homemade vietnamese cuisine, customer service is excellent as well, my parents try the drunken chicken hot pot. It's very special broth.they're using fermented sticky rice served with vermicelli and vegi on the side..we never try this one before. I try sizzling Hanoi turmeric fish It's very yummy. In here very good quatity and quality. Would definitely high recommend this place

Amazing Northern-style Vietnamese food that is rich and full of flavours. Their Hanoi Spring Rolls are a delicious side dish, and there are also vegetarian options as well. Highly recommend if you are looking for an affordable and authentic meal!

By far the best Vietnamese restaurant in Australia we have tried. The duck is a must, nem nuong Nha Trang is also special and great in value. Nice ambient for group meal or business meal.
Custardbun
Quiet Vietnamese restaurant near Glenferrie Station, where it was easy to snare a table on a school night! Highlight were the salt and pepper prawns, which were coated with what I could only describe as green corn flakes. Very generous serving.

Decent food served quickly. Nice staff and good service.
Wasn’t the greatest I’ve had but great for a quick lunch. Will probably be back to try something else

Ordered a takeaway- springroll very soggy and oily- vermicelli just a lot of beansprout and less noodle - wont order or come here to eat again

Five of us walked in with no booking on a Tuesday and were seated immediately in this charming little place which was still pretty busy. We ordered a lot of different dishes to share and all were nice. My favourite was the traditional pancake. The duck and rice we had was ok but a few pieces were just bones. Stir fried greens with garlic were very good. Overall nice but I won't rush back because there are a lot of other places to try in the area. Good range of Vietnamese beers.

Nice & appealing looking Vietnamese restaurant. Had the salt & pepper prawns which were old/dry or maybe overcooked and no hint of salt or pepper - really should have sent them back. Others had the soup which they said was quite good. But overall disappointing.

I came here for a quick lunch before heading home, I had been craving bun bo hue for a while and I saw that this place had it. Although it tasted a little different to other places it was still very enjoyable with a nicely flavoured broth, rice noodles and an assortment of meats I was definitely satisfied :)

Nice little authentic Vietnamese family owned restaurant. A bit different as Viet Star. More likely street food and Vietnam fusion. We had whole duck with 5 Ways, really nice and full.
Thats My Food
Hanoi old quarter in vietnam is one of my favourite places in the world to have amazing food. So i went to this restaurant in hawthorn with very high expectations but they were shattered pretty quickly as i tasted the broth of the chicken pho. Pho is one of my favourite dishes and i've had many different kinds.

I ordered a chicken pho and chargrilled chicken with rice.

Soup was bland, lacked flavour, lacked richness, chicken was not fresh, noodles felt undercooked. All in all it was a disappointment.

For me flavour of chargrilled chicken was the only good thing there. It was cooked nicely, combination of fish sauce and sugar gave the chicken that amazing flavour. It was a huge piece of chicken. But rice that came with it were not fresh. They didnot go with the chicken at all.

The interior was good and the service was quick as well but food was just short of average for me. It was 2.5 stars according to me.

Came here because this place has good reviews for Northern style Vietnamese food. As a test we ordered two signature Hanoian dishes and here is the verdict:
Bún chả: the grilled pork belly was okay. Grilled meatball was oily - and seasoning was not right because it tasted like my mum’s fried meatball, using frying pan instead of being properly grilled. Fish sauce tastes funny... kinda salty and off balance. There’s a bunch of raw bean sprout (???) and no lettuce. I’m sorry that this review may sound harsh but I lived in Hanoi for 20 years and bún chả was my soul food - they simply did not do it right.
Bún thang: this Hanoian delicacy is hard to replicate, but to say Hanoi Old Quarter’s version was “lacking” is an understatement. While they nailed the soup, toppings were harshly prepared without much care and missed some important ingredients. The fried egg should never be brown. Ham (giò) should have been thinly sliced. Strange bunch of herbs instead of simple green onion. Where are dried radish, dried shrimp, mushroom and the shrimp paste? And it was served with a basket of more herbs and raw bean sprout - like the places that serve Southern style phở and claim to the authentic Hanoi style.
I left with such sadness. These are the two dishes that I would always order from Vietnamese places to test their quality, and it’s safe to say I won’t come back to Hanoi Old Quarter.

I love the atmostphere and the unique decoration of the place. The service is also very friendly and fast. I had "bun Moc" - a Northern Vietnam noodle soup with meat balls which was really nice and authentic (I know because I'm a Vietnamese). Their spring rolls and rolled Pho were also very good although the portions were a bit small for the price. The sizzling turmeric fish was not authentic as I exptected, a bit disappointimg to be honest. Overall, the food here was pretty good, a bit above average, I will come back sometimes.

Authentic Vietnamese food, and wonderful that they are so close to Small Patch for a great BYO selection. The duck is a must. Price wise, they are reasonable.

Great Northern Vietnamese cuisine. A bit different from the plethora of Viet places on Vic St. The Obama bun cha is a must try, so is the turmeric fish.

Order the egg coffee drink for the full experience.

Service is a little slow is perhaps the only downside.

Rated 4 paws.

Had pho here for lunch and I have to say it's not as tasty as those in Springvale and that it is a smaller portion for $12.50. Buuuuut the sliced beef is very fresh! Still enjoyed it. It's better than the other nearby viet place

Absolutely amazing!!! I have eaten all over Vietnam and many Vietnamese restaurants in Australia, the flavours are out of this world .. recommend this place to anyone

Came here for the first time and had a great Pho for lunch. Haven't tried anything else on the menu yet but I'll definitely be back to try some other dishes. Can't say I understand the music selection though, bit too much boot scooting for my liking, but if you like Pho (or boot scooting), I'd recommend this place.

Aithentic, generous and cooked/served with love

Only 6 months old first time venture by H&W restauranteurs. Been twice since discovering 6 weeks ago and equally good and consistent. Serious food and knowledgeable & caring service. Prawn fritters (not your usual) outstanding and Vietnamese Duck (their local take on Peking Duck with whole duck over 3 courses) is sublime and a bargain @ $55!

FOH Troy and his chef wife deserve your patronage and you will be well rewarded by the experience of a visit. Full liquor licence pending with byo wine also to be allowed once issued.

Amazing and quick service, absolutely delicious food, lovely staff, new favourite Vietnamese restaurant. We had spring roll vermicelli salad, hanoi combo soup and rice paper rolls, all were amazing

regular costumer eat there close to twice a week, good service every time and never disappointed with food quality. personal favourite roast duck banquet

Went here looking to satisfy a late night pho craving and was not disappointed. The pho was as good as any I've ever had and the spring rolls were too. Serving sizes were good also. The food did take a little while to come but that doesn't really bother me, especially when it tastes that good. This restaurant deserves a higher rating.

I like the fit-out and it is a fresh new place to add to the ever growing array of choices on Glenferrie road but I found the service to be very lacking and disorganized which made my experience very disappointing. I don't expect Pho to take longer than 15min but 35-40min is ridiculous when there are no more than 4 customers in the restaurant. I also found the service rather rude and rushed. Seeing as there are many alternatives in the area, I hope they can improve their standards..

The food here is fantastic - this restaurant is probably the one and only to serve authentic Hanoian cuisine in town. The food is freshly prepared, freshly served. The must-try dishes are: Drunken chicken hotpot - guaranteed to be "wowed" and the Duck banquet - one duck to be served in three dishes. Sugarcane drink or their Jasmine tea is also first class. For what it's worth, a three-course meal will probably only cost around $30-$40 per person, if you come in a group of three or four. This is my favourite Vietnamese place of all local establishments, and I strongly recommend it to any Vietnamese food lover.

The food is very good and tasty . I highly recommend Bun Cha , Hanoi Fish , Pho . Actually Pho is the best one very yummy. The service is also good , friendly and fast. I feel the restaurant so warm and cozy. I will come back next time

There were not many customers at the restaurant, moreover, I was the first customer at 11am, then they took time to serve one pho for 30 minutes.....the cook apparently called the waiter many times, but he was making banhmi? bread for a customer, so ignored the bell.... every customer was waiting average 20-30 minutes to get their foods....everybody seems so confused. I hope the guy can improve his hospitality skills, that is easy, serve cutlery and water first when a customer has a seat, or etc. ...
About food, it was spicy because of veges which cut them roughly so I felt more spicier, not the best pho at all for me.....

Everything is good. The only room for improvement is consistency in Pho broth. Some days it tastes like heaven, other days just so so. What keeps me coming back is their chilli paste - yep, ask for it.

Great place, lovely pho. Don't need to go Richmond or springvale for a quality bowl of pho, just go here👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Very authentic taste. Highly recommend

The 4 of us had a terrific value dinner.
The rice paper rolls were incredibly fresh and the sauce which complemented them was a great match.
Crispy vegetable and noodles was a decent sized main.
The chicken pancake was light and refreshing and the pork meatballs were in a flavoursome broth.
The room is cozily decorated. The staff very accomodating.
A new restaurant well worth supporting!
BYO too!
