Review The Foodstore Cafe - Hawthorn

I'magirl90
My husband and I chanced upon this place, it looked good so we gave it a go. The owners/staff are very friendly people, make you feel very welcome the moment they see you. We shared the Biscoff pancakes which was delicious and a bowl of fries seasoned with lemon pepper which made a nice change to standard fries. Enjoyed our soy lattes too. We sat outside with our dog. It is dog friendly with water bowls outside.They have lots of outdoor seating and large wide interior too. Easy parking at the front. We'll be back!

Loved everything about this cafe, nice and cozy with a fantastic menu! The coffee was also a standout, and exactly what we needed! Favourite dish would have to be the corn and pumpkin fritters, great flavour combo and the way it was all presented is incredible.

As soon as we arrived with a couple of friends, we were made so welcome and comfortable, nothing was a problem. Choice of inside or outside dining. Umbrellas outside. The Mushroom toast was absolutely scrumptious! The breakfast salad, also yum! Coffee a big tick ✅. Definitely recommend a visit … we definitely will return soon. Thank u Foodstore, keep up the great service and delicious menu!

Cosy local cafe with flavoursome brunch food and friendly staff. What I enjoyed: 🐑 Bush Lamb Sweet Potato Hash - punchy Smokey flavour pulled lamb with a bit of crunch from almonds and cashews, in between the diced carrots and cauliflower. he sweet potato hash was kind of overpowered by the strong flavours from the lamb. It could have been be a little bit more balanced, in my honest opinion. If you like strong flavours, this is the dish for you. T 🥗 Chicken & Halloumi Salad Lighter option, yummy and so healthy with all those greens! And the halloumi makes it perfect! I am loving their freshly squeezed juice too👌🏻 Can’t wait to be back to try their other dishes! Thank you for your hospitality!

We absolutely loved the smoothies, açai bowl and lamb hash too 😍 The flavours in the lamb hash were such a great combo. We had the following 💕Blueberry Pancakes 💕Lamb Hash 💕Lamb Tacos 💕Açai Bowl 💕Green Smoothie 💕Açai Smoothie Definitely check out @thefoodstorecafe great menu, so friendly and make such great coffee.
Hello. imnikki
A favourite with locals, you'll definitely find something for every taste buds on the menu. Think classics such as Eggs Benedict with slow cooked beef brisket, Reuben Sandwich, Chilli Scrambled or Mushrooms on Toast. For something lighter, you can't go pass the Chicken and Halloumi Salad. Great flavours, and faultless execution, The Foodstore undeniably serves up major brunch goals, and the coffee is absolutely top notch here.

We headed back to The Foodstore Cafe this morning and it’s always a pleasure to come to this sunny friendly Auburn street local. Coffees orders we then selected some healthier options from the menu as have been trying to make “better choices” as of late.

I picked the smashed avo which while KD had a Acai smoothie bowl from the specials menu. We also ordered the green smoothie.

My smashed avo was ultra delicious differentiating itself from your standard smash by having beetroot purée, quinoa and a generous amount of freshly sliced chilli. It was simply a delicious dish to go back to.

The Acai bowl, was huge and fresh, generous amount of healthy peanut butter, fresh fruit and wonderful homemade puffy granola, I think what made this dish was the inclusion of pistachios, perfect textural crunch and flavour.

Such a consistently good cafe, we haven’t found anything to criticise except for the fact that they aren’t currently open on a Sunday so we need to fit them into our Saturday routine.

Thanks to the team at The Foodstore Cafe for their hospitality.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previous Review
The Foodstore Cafe was full of natural light as we dined in for Saturday brunch. There was a modern feel about a place that had plenty lent from the past. An art deco door made its way into a bench and tiles on table tops were blended with cork light shades and modern pine. We drank delicious smooth creamy lattes while deciding on what next. I really enjoyed the Veneziano beans.
We chose two items from the regular breakfast menu and couldn’t say no to the scrambled egg bagel on the specials board.
The scrambled egg bagel came with smoked salmon and camembert and was a wonderful choice. It had a hit of chili and this dish was full of flavour and taste buds danced from the heat, delicious.
We also ordered the ancient grains porridge, which could only be described as next level. A most wonderful texture from the inclusion of quinoa and chia and the flavour from the topping of orange baked rhubarb and pistachio crumb would make Goldilocks proud.
We decided to share a brunch dessert and the Orange blossom hotcakes can only be described as an Insagramers dream. Topped with ice-cream and piled high with fairy floss these hotcakes perched very proudly on the plate with bright colors of red and pink. Pleasingly the look was backed up with flavour as the fluffy cakes had soaked up the delicious orange blossom syrup. I loved the crunch from the chocolate soil which paired perfectly with the orange flavours and slivered fresh strawberries, just yum.
A welcoming space and friendly staff made our visit all the better. Thanks so much for having us.
Isn’t it great when you have a cafe close to your work that serves consistently delicious coffee, great healthy food and service with a smile- always!
When looking for a great cafe for brunch, The food store cafe ticks all the right boxes. It’s on busy Auburn Road, however there is ample parking, and lots of seating inside and out. It’s busy with locals and people living the brunch life.
My usual order is a coffee & one of their salads which is made fresh to order. I highly recommend the calamari salad and the chicken and halloumi salad. The beef burger is good as well as their instaworthy hotcakes! They also have house made cakes and other treats like vegan slices & croissants.
The Foodstore Café in Hawthorn is a neighbourhood gem. Loved by locals, this café serves up interesting brunch options.
Whatever you do, make sure you try the Middle Eastern Lamb Salad. We loved the perfectly cooked morsels of harissa spiced lamb served with roasted baby carrots, cauliflower, fennel, green beans, mixed herbs and salad leaves topped with fresh pomegranate arils and adorned with creamy coriander yoghurt. Just yum!
For health fiends there are always amazing specials available as well as the ever popular superfood salad (which you can opt to have with chicken). A wonderful amalgamation of flavours and textures, we loved the tender and super flavoursome Portugese spiced chicken tossed with a nutrient dense mix of spiced broccoli, asparagus, beans, snow peas, organic quinoa, black rice, corn, zucchini noodles, carrots, Tuscan kale and spinach, finished with their house dressing and laced with Danish feta, chilli and pomegranate.
If you want something extra hearty do not go past the beef burger. This is an almighty burger featuring a beautifully chargrilled beef patty, fried egg, tomato, mixed salad leaves, gherkins, dill spicy mayo and chilli jam – all served with a generous side of lemon herb chips. Just. Yum!
On the drinks front, there is plenty to choose from. The coffee is truly excellent and poured by adept baristas and there is also a great selection of non-caffeinated options like freshly squeezed juices and gorgeous smoothies.
With an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, there are dishes to suit everyone's tastes including the little ones.
Some Bunee Loves Food
On a sunny Wednesday morning at 7am, we decided to have breakfast at this café – it was a nice, well-lit place which was pretty busy as well.
We started off with a coffee, matcha latte and a beetroot latte. I love how you can add honey into the drinks to sweeten it.
For the food, we ordered:
ORANGE BLOSSOM HOTCAKES – served with seasonal fruits, chocolate soil, berry coulis, vanilla ice cream, fairy floss and maple syrup. – The hotcakes were of a really nice red colour and they were really moist, thick and fluffy. The vanilla ice cream and fairyfloss is just really good together and along with the hotcakes, the combination is just too good!
SALMON OMELETTE – Smoked salmon, cherry tomato, herbs, capsicum, chilli, onion, feta on sourdough toast – This wasn’t even my dish but I ate half of the omelette already. It’s one of the best salmon omelette’s I’ve had as the smoked salmon wasn’t too salty, and the omelette had a really nice flavour (not plain like some can be) and you can taste the chilli kick in it! I love it!
Thank you The Food Store café.
I visited The Foodstore cafe on Auburn rd Hawthorn for the first time to catch up with a friend for lunch, and we were both very impressed. It was a lovely day so we decided to sit outside. However inside the cafe it looked very spacious and cosy.
My friend and I decided on sharing something savoury and something sweet.
The staff were super friendly and were happy to give us some extra plates to share our meals.
We started with the tasty Portuguese chicken platter and it tasted so fresh and flavoursome. Then we indulged in the delicious orange blossom hotcakes and two smoothies. One was Acai and the other green. We were both full and satisfied.
I can’t wait to revisit and try another great looking dish off the menu.
Marnie
My friend and I shared the portugese chicken platter and the pancakes. The chicken was so nicely seasoned with plenty of flavour, the spicy chicken and sweet dressing on the salad was just perfect and super fresh.
The pancakes were so good even after we spent ages taking photos they were still so fluffy. The orange blossom and fairy floss combo was spot on.
It was such a nice day we dined outside, perfect day for smoothies I had the acai, my bestie had the green smoothie it was very thirst quenching on a summer day.
We are both looking forward to coming again and trying something else on the menu.
I’m always on the lookout for something new and different. I was excited to try The FoodStore Cafe, in Hawthorn East. Specialising in salads, delicious burgers and amazing latte art, the aim here is to enjoy some great food and drinks, and have a relaxing time doing it. Staff are extremely welcoming. The restaurant is modern in decor and comfortable seating. I had the chicken and halloumi salad and my partner had the beef burger. I’ll definitely visit again soon - I want to try those pancakes!
Along the main road of Auburn, the Foodstore café discretely serves up hearty breakfasts, lunches and coffee. The typical local drives past without noticing the inconspicuous white and natural wood tables. If you do enter, the men at the counter will smile and oblige any fussy coffee request. A full menu, open space inside and out, friendly staff and a relaxed vibe, makes this neighbourhood café one of community.
Tucked away along Auburn Rd Hawthorn, The Foodstore is a well kept secret amongst locals, and for very good reason. Welcomed by the friendly team we sat at one of the cool tiled tables and soaked in the atmosphere. It's a large space with lots of natural light, and it's decorated in a homely but funky way. It helps to make the large space more cosy and encourages you to settle in and enjoy yourself.
The menu is filled with an abundance of fresh options that are just waiting to tantalise your taste buds. We started with fantastic coffee and a yummy green smoothie, before devouring the fantastic Eggs Benny. Served on a sweet potato rosti, this sweetness is a perfect contrast to the creamy egg and hollondaise and tender, succulent meat. Such a fantastic start.
Now onto the Orange Blossom hotcakes. The most perfect stack of vibrant red pancakes topped with a huge cloud of Persian fairy floss, berry compote, ice cream and a pistachio crumb. The little jar of syrup on the side was the perfect touch so you could make the dish as sweet as you like. We loved the Middle Eastern flavours in this dish, and it was as tasty as it was visually stunning. Definitely worth the trip to the Foodstore for this dish alone.
We dined on a busy weekday morning, and the place was full the entire time. Word has definitely gotten around to the locals that this is a cafe worth visiting, and with such fabulous food, amazing service and the smiling faces welcoming you, why wouldn't you become a regular?
Gut The Crap
What a fantastic cafe!
I’ve been dying to get there to try their acai as I’ve heard so many good things about it...it didn’t disappoint! The smashed avo was just as delicious, the beetroot hummus goes perfectly with this dish.
Plenty of options for all dietary needs here, it’s well worth a visit!
The Foodstore Cafe ticks all the boxes when it comes to the quintessential neighbourhood cafe - friendly service, interesting and reasonably priced menu, and some outdoor tables to bring your furry friends when it's not raining. If you're ever wanting to try a cafe that's a little more hidden away, then The Foodstore Cafe is the place to be.
Had the chance to finally visit The Foodstore Cafe and the atmosphere of the cafe seems very cosy and family oriented. Love the open kitchen and that you can see what’s going on.
So we got:
- Thyme chicken & smoked halloumi salad
-Mushroom toast
- Salmon omelette
- Middle eastern lamb salad
- Big brekkie
The presentation of each dishes were just so beautiful and tasted delicious.
Highly recommended this cafe if you haven’t been!
Hello. Imnikki
The Foodstore Cafe just recently launched their new menu, and very graciously had me and a few other foodies over to try out the new menu before its launch. With a focus on using fresh seasonal ingredients to create hearty yet wholesome dishes, it was little surprise that the menu delivers, and much more!
We started off with coffees, and I can say that my skinny latte was impeccable. A strong and balanced brew, with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
When the meals arrived, we couldn't wait to dig in, not just with cutleries but also with our cameras. The orange blossom hotcakes were stunning, and the bright red colour had us fooled into thinking that they were red velvet. All it took was one bite to send our taste buds into flavour heaven. It was just the right amount of sweet, with a bright zesty taste, and the tartness of the berries and the crunchy chocolate soil perfectly round up this dish.
My own dish of the mushroom toast was fantastic too. The mushrooms were indeed the star of the meal. Roasted in thyme and garlic, it was full of flavour and so was the spiced cauliflower. With hummus on the side, and a mixture of chopped nuts and pomegranate seeds lent not just a textural element, but also additional element of flavours to create a multi-dimensional dish.
My partner's Big Breakfast was a classic brekky dish that was done very well. The use of fresh and seasonal ingredients allowed the natural clean flavours of each ingredients to shine, and while simple, it was undeniably tasty.
The trend of yumminess continued with the Middle Eastern Lamb Salad and the Chicken Haloumi Salad. The former was a beautifully spiced dish, with the most delicious roasted carrots, and the magical pairing of coriander yoghurt and tender chunks of lamb. The latter wowed us all with its house made haloumi - very smooth texture, springy, with a good balance between soft and firm.
Everyone else enjoyed their meal very much, as evident by the fact that all plates were spotless by the end of the meal. An afternoon well spent, with enjoyable food and great company. Thank you for having me!
Real rating 4.25 ⭐️
We had decided to try out The Foodstore Cafe and it was such a fun experience! Here’s what we had!
Waffles - served with fruits, Persian fairy floss, ice cream and maple syrup, this dish was simple but yet delicious! The waffles were crispy and fresh and each bite kept me wanting to go back for more!
Blueberry buttermilk pancakes - served with saffron mascarpone, smashed oreos, Persian fairy floss, fresh berries, sautéed banana and maple syrup, this was a winner for me! With the warmness, moistness and fluffiness of the pancakes melting in my mouth, it really made my day!
Baked shakshuka with eggs - spiced five beans with with tomato, capsicum, mixed veg stew, tahini yoghurt and two poached eggs, this was a very flavorful meal. The sauce was thick and it was easily absorbed into the multigrain toast which was very heart warming!
Overall, we had a wonderful time and would love to visit again to try the rest of their menu! 😊
Always excited to find a cool new cafe in my local neighbourhood! We visited on one of Melbournes wet days and sat inside the welcoming and cosy interior. We loved that the kitchen was visible, it gives a sense of trust and honesty to show them cooking our food. We ordered the smashed avo, the special waffles and the salmon Benedict which were all delicious! My favourite was the salmon Benedict full of flavour. Didn’t like the balsamic vinegar around the edge, a personal dislike of mine but still a great dish! Highly recommend popping down one day for some good food!
Cute suburban cafe in Hawthorn nicely laid out so you don't feel like you're top of the next table. Greeting us when we walked in is a long counter with yummy looking pre-made wraps and sweet treats. There's a couple of booths for small groups plus some seating outside where you can sit in the shade and enjoy a coffee with your fury friends. We loved the great local vibe inside and you can tell that the owners and chefs have a real love for what they're creating here.
They're serving up an all day menu with middle Eastern influences and a touch of F45! (the chef follows the F45 menu). The menu is largely skewed towards brunch dishes and focuses on good quality, fresh ingredients and great coffee.
All your favourite brekkies are represented with options including organic açai protein bowl; toasted buckwheat Bircher; smashed avo with chilli pickle and crispy quinoa; Salmon Benny; and the big 'Foodstore Breakfast' with the lot.
They have a few options that are gluten and dairy free and they can make almost any dish vegan on request. This isn't mentioned on their current menu so I just wanted to call this out for our vegan friends :)
An awesome addition to the Hawthorn cafe seen with great food and coffee, a warm family welcoming from the staff and great coffee. We love that they're currently the only spot around opening at 6am servicing the early bird tradie crowd.
We caught a sneak peak at the exciting changes for the menu in the new year - it's getting a complete shake up with loads of vegan friendly dishes and we can't wait to come back to try these!!
We visited this cafe today, the cafe was pretty busy when we arrived which caused a bit waiting time for our food. We both loved everything we got from there, coffee was yummy and smooth, very easy to drink. In terms of food, I really want to say this cafe makes the best I’ve ever had before. They made everything taste so yummy and well-seasoned, even just simple food like tomatoes. The mushrooms were so juicy, bacons were so yummy. We really said “soo yummy“ at least 1000 times while we were eating. Good coffee! Friendly staffs! Amazing food! We were truly hooked and can’t wait to go back there to try more of their amazing food!
I found this cafe on the Zomato app through ‘The Best of Melbourne’ category and I can see why. Service is fantastic, staff are friendly, especially the young barista who took our orders and made us delicious coffees. We ordered the beef burger and my partner ordered the chicken halloumi salad. Everything was delicious, portions sizes were generous and we stayed til the lunch time rush was gone. We ended u ordering another coffee and shared the house made gluten free orange cake. It was great to see the staff having a laugh in the open kitchen, we couldn’t help but join in on the conversation as we walked passed to pay for our meals. We will definitely visit again, thank you Chef.
We recently visited this cafe on a Saturday and knew we’d picked a good spot as it was quite busy. The kids had milkshakes and we enjoyed some delicious dishes. The classic smashed avo was spot on with all the flavours you’d expect and a little more with the beetroot. The fritters were tasty although slightly spicier than I expected. The pancakes however tasted just as good as they looked! Would recommend for brunch or coffee and treat.
An absolutely amazing cafe!! Everything about it was incredible. Te food was delicious and very filling. The service was terrific and the flavour of the food was delicious. Everything was so well balanced and thought out. The little details of chilli in the avocado, your own syrup to pour on the pancakes and being able to add honey to your chai took this cafe to the next level. I throughly enjoyed everything.
Food Fiend Melbourne
We visited Foodstore Cafe in Hawthorn last weekend, with the lovely @melbourniancritic, @knowingmelbourne and @splitthebill for a cheeky Saturday morning brunch. I drive past this cafe on the way to work every morning, but had never stopped in, so it was lovely to actually have the time to pay them a visit. The owners, and staff, are absolutely lovely and very accomodating. There is also ample (free!) parking and a large number of tables both indoors and out.
We ordered the red velvet hotcakes, omelette, smashed avocado, shakshouka and veggie brekky special to share and photographed the absolute hell out of them before eating them. I also ordered the new mango smoothie to try.
Considering how long we took to photograph everything, each dish still tasted great, which is a testament to the great flavours. The hotcakes had melted the ice cream and were doused in syrup by the time we were done with them, but they were still light and fluffy. If I hadn't demolished the smashed avo first, I would have eaten way more of them. They were very tasty.
The smashed avocado was nice, but then again, it's hard to stuff up a smashed avo. I loved the addition of the herbs and cherry tomatoes, which made it taste extra healthy.
The mango smoothie was very sweet and came with a giant ball of Persian fairy floss on top. My only issue with it was the seeds on the top of the smoothie, that kept getting stuck in the straw. It made it a bit tricky to finish off.
The girls raved about their dishes, especially the rich flavour of the shakshouka and the cauliflower. Everything on the table was devoured and we all left very satisfied from generous serving sizes.
Foodstore Cafe is definitely becoming a brunch go-to and is a very popular spot on weekends for cyclists, so make sure you visit soon before you have to start queuing up for your meal! :)
Fritters were flavoursome and filling the beetroot, balsamic and tahini combo was sweet and tangy and the salsa gave it a nice freshness. The shakshuka was also nice and staff were friendly, will be back!
I was lucky enough to be invited to try The Food Store brunch menu on the weekend. A big menu with something for everybody. A good mix of specials, brunch faves and lunch items to keep everyone satisfied.
I tried the baked eggs which were rich and flavoursome and the eggs cooked to perfection!
The blueberry hotcakes were an absolute highlight. Light and fluffy and with a perfect mix of fresh fruit, syrup, crumb and icecream. Some of the best hotcakes ive had in a long time!
The mushroom toast special was also really tasty, with lots of spices to give it that flavour punch. Loved it.
The smashed avo was a good classic dish, very generous serving of avo which I always like.
Thanks so much for having us! I recommend!
I visit Hawthorn once a week for work so I go to The Food Store Cafe and order the same thing. A latte and beef burger. The burger here is the best, it's big, the patty is thick, tastes freshly made with a good amount of seasoning. It comes with chips and sauce. The chips are thinly cut and good to say they aren't oily or have a dirty oil taste. Please never take this burger off your menu, hats off to your chef.
We were lucky to be invited to check out this hidden gem in Hawthorn for brunch on Saturday. We visited in the morning before the afternoon rush of students came in.
We had their chefs special Beef Brisket Benedict, Crispy Chicken bagel and Blueberry Buttermilk pancakes. Not only was the serve large in comparison to other cafes the food was delicious. The beef brisket had been slow cooked resulting in a tasty tender brisket. With 2 slices of toast and 2 poached eggs this dish is definitely for the hungry. The crispy chicken bagel had 3 slices of tasty fried chicken and a side of French fries.
The blueberry pancakes were fluffy and with a side of maple syrup this makes the perfect brunch dessert.
For drinks we tried their açai smoothie and banana protein smoothie which were both refreshing and almost a meal in itself.
We were lucky enough to be invited to come here for brunch on Saturday, this place looks welcoming and relaxing. Their decoration makes me feel like home somehow. They have many big table both indoor and outdoor. We started with banana and acai smoothies, they were very refreshing and yum.
Then we ordered Brisket Benny (beef), Crispy Chicken Bagel, and Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes. All of them were very delicious and the portion is huge unlike some cafes. Our favourite dish is the beef brisket, the beef was so flavourful just perfectly cooked ! We recommend!
The staff was nice and friendly.
I came to Hawthorne to dine at Foodstore Cafe on a lovely warm Melbourne morning. I took the train from Melbourne CBD and the cafe is fairly close to the train station (15 min).
Ambiance: The cafe itself has a bright and light-filled ambiance, inviting and spacious. There is also patio seating which is fabulous for a warm day.
Food: The cafe has a large menu offering breakfast staples like an Acai bowl, breakfast juices and smoothies, as well as a varied savory lunch menu with dishes that had a Mediterranean twist.
I started my breakfast with a Flat White with Soy Milk. The coffee was strong and made me want a second cup!
I ordered the Warm Braised Lamb Salad which had been slowly cooked for over 9 hours. It had pulled lamb (oh so tender!), saffron roasted cauliflower, green Peas, corn, quinoa, lots of and kale topped off with lots of lime and tahini yogurt. The salad is served warm, the dressing is absolutely deliciously creamy and yet not overpowering. It's tanginess perfectly complements the crunchiness of the kale and softness of the quinoa. The plating was appetizing and professionally done.
I paired this salad with a Berry smoothie which was almost too large to finish!
My friends ordered other beautiful dishes including a unique take on Avocado Toast, Acai Bowl and the Big Breakfast and they appreciated their food as much as I did mine!
We shared the Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes! It included saffron mascarpone, smashed Oreos,Persian FAIRY FLOSS, Fresh berries, sauteed bananas, orange infused Maple Syrup. The pancakes were fluffly, not too sweet and definitely my highlight of the week! One of the best I've had in Melbourne.
Service: The cafe is full of cheerful and inviting staff, the chef was generous in explaining the elements of our dishes and the owner Mr. Ahmed was so happy to have us.Thank you for having us and I can't wait to be back!
We were recently invited to The Foodstore Cafe, located on a large corner block in Hawthorn. As many of you know, we frequent Hawthorn quite a bit when it comes to food! The cafe itself is large, bright and spacious with wooden tones and white tiles along the walls and tables. We were provided with an extensive menu and additional specials menu to peruse. We started off with a couple of lattes which were served at the right temperature. The coffee itself was great and had a decent strength to it. I do hate it when I am served coffees that are too weak and milky but this one was perfect.
Rating 4.5
There have been a few reviewers that have mentioned the fabulous service and l agree.
The staff at The Foodstore Cafe are fantastic and it really was service with a smile.
I had lunch with some girlfriends- we ordered a meal each and shared the pancakes. I couldn’t go past the big breakfast, the eggs were cooked perfectly and presented well. I also had a few fork fulls of the ladies food. I absolutely loved the lamb salad, the smashed avo was lovely, the açai was stunning and the smoothies were great.
Thank you to The Foodstore Cafe! I’ll definitely come back for the lamb salad and the pancakes.
I've followed The Foodstore Café on Instagram for a few months now. So when I planned my trip to Melbourne I knew it was the first café I had to visit. I must say, its exactly what is portrayed on insta! We ordered the chicken burger which came with a generous serving of fries, acai bowl, the pancakes and scrambled eggs on toast. Everything was delicious. To top it off the coffee was the best and I love the coffee art. Thank you to the staff for making us feel so welcome.
Foodserra
Best “mushrooms on toast” I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a few! The eggs were cooked perfectly, vegetables were tender and seasoned well. To make it even better there were almonds and peanuts throughout the sautéed vegetables. So filling as well. Service was great. Would come back and would recommend.
4.6
We adored Foodstore Cafe. There’s so much to admire here. Beautiful food, great coffee, lovely friendly service and a nice aspect. It’s a great cafe.
We were greeted with lovely smiles on arrival. After being seated we were presented with the comprehensive and varied menu which offers plenty of flavoursome options. Two things are immediately obvious. First, the excellent specials. There are some wonderful dishes. Second, the abundance of healthy choices. Basically, it’s a cinch to eat well here.
We began with delicious rich smoothies. These are thick, tasty and very nicely composed. We tried the Acai smoothie and the breakfast smoothie with banana and berries. While they were both superb, the breakfast smoothie struck us particularly as top class. It’s fantastic.
The world’s most beautiful woman selected the Mushroom Toast from the specials for her meal. She beat me to it. We’d both read about this dish and were both keen to try it. It’s a fantastic dish. It’s composed of toasted garlic thyme mushroom with mixed nuts, spiced cauliflower, goat fetta, cherry tomato, hummus on toast with poached egg. Everything works in this dish. It looks really good, it has beautiful flavours and lovely textures as well. There is a delicate understated middle eastern taste to the dish which comes from a combination of herbs and spices we were advised later. It gives the dish impressive substance. Of all things too, we loved the finely chopped nuts in this dish. Overall this really is a lovely dish that is highly recommended.
I chose the Brisket Benny as my meal.
This is a real cracker too. It is slow cooked smoked pulled beef brisket on sourdough, poached eggs, crackling bacon and apple crisp. The presentation, flavours and textures in this dish are excellent. The brisket was tender, full of flavour and just perfectly cooked. The shredded smoked bacon on the rim was both pretty and delicious. The bread too was pure quality and, pleasingly, there were two slices not one as I’ve been given in other places lately and been left a little hungry as a result afterwards. The eggs were done superbly with a covering of lovely hollandaise. Again, this dish is a winner and easily recommended.
These dishes made for two excellent brunch dishes. They’re a very good size and for $18 only each they’re fantastic value compared with some other places we’ve eaten at lately. We both commented that they represent serious value for money given the size and quality of the fare.
Sadly, we were too full to consider dessert and it was down to coffees to finish. The coffee was an Ethiopian bean that had just arrived in store. These are formidable coffee beans. My long black and my partner’s flat white were outstanding and were very skillfully made. This is coffee and coffee making of an impressively high order. As good as any coffee I’ve had in this great city.
I forgot to mention the decor here. It’s very pleasant and the space is both stylish, pleasant and comfortable. It’s a lovely spot to be.
As I was researching for our visit here, I read through a few of the recent Zomato reviews for feedback and tips. I was struck by the number of really well written reviews that capture the essence of Foodstore Cafe including those by Split the Bill, Tim E, Tinmanstreats, Suzie Scribbles and others. They’re well worth a read if you get a chance.
We had a wonderful time here. I found myself wishing about three times during our visit that this was our local cafe that we could walk to whenever we wanted. It’s not though and that’s life. How fortunate are the locals here. This is definitely the sort of cafe that’s worth travelling to. All quality and a really rewarding experience. There’s easy parking just outside.
Thanks so much for the kind invitation to dine here. Our particular thanks to Ahmed and Carl and the other staff, including the knowledgeable and skillful chef who were lucky enough to talk to. Our thanks to the amazing Vela too for her amazing work to make this visit happen!
Highly recommended.
4.5 With an abundance of fresh healthy dishes, The Food Store is a great place to pop in for a break from the hectic Glenferrie Road brunch scene and have a more...
Chronicles Of Nardia
The Foodstore Cafe is located at the quiet end of Auburn Road in Hawthorn. I was invited to check it out so met some foodie friends there last weekend. It was very busy which is always a good sign but fortunately the service was still quick.
They have quite an extensive menu with plenty of variety and also a specials menu. We started with coffees & a couple of smoothies which we all enjoyed.
I opted for the Mediterranean Chicken salad from the specials menu. I was really impressed with this dish. It was light & fresh, the marinated chicken was full of flavour & I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My friends also chose from the specials menu & were very happy with their dishes too.
A lovely cafe, fast & friendly service & a great range of dishes. I’ll definitely be back to try some more. Thanks so much for having us.
What a find! I’ve driven/walked past this cafe many times and finally made it inside.
A bustling cafe at the quiet end of Hawthorn, The Foodstore Cafe serves up delicious dishes that are not only beautiful but also full of flavour!
They hit the mark with every dish we ordered!
Definitely won’t be passing this one next time!! Can’t wait to come back and try our the other menu items. A special shout out to the lovely staff also 😊
This isn't your typical slap together meat between two buns loved the wagyu beef, with lettuce, tomato and spicy dill mayo. The chips were delicious as well. Service was fast, staff are friendly, I'll definitely comeback here again for my burger fix.
I was very fortunate to be invited here for brunch on the weekend. The service was great, very professional and personable.
My partner and I enjoyed some great coffees, with some clever coffee art and some awesome food.
For my brunch I had some vegetarian corn and zucchini fritters w some beetroot salsa and I got some crispy bacon on the side. The fritters were delicious and sooo tasty. The beetroot relish was really good the bacon was crispy. Perfect. The dish had some nice spice too.
My partner had a breakfast burrito which was delicious too. The portion sizes were big but unlike other places that I’ve eaten, I didn’t feel too full afterwards. It was just the right amount. And looking around there were empty plates from other happy diners so I guess just the right amount of food.
Parking was easy out the front of the cafe and I can recommend this place for some great food and coffee. Yummo
Wanted to catch up with a friend for a lunch catch up. Have driven past the Foodstore cafe so decided to check it out.
Was great to see there was ample street car parking so no rush.
Walking into a modern restaurant full of natural light was a great start. We had a latte and cappuccino to start off and decided to order lunch.
If you are looking for something different check out the warm braised lamb salad with the cauliflower, kale and lime this was a great balance of flavours. My friend had the mushroom which was also delicious.
The meals don't leave you feeling bloated...but if I had room I would have tried the cakes! Next time as they look so delicious...
I’ve been a frequent customer at food store cafe since I work next door. Apart from the coffee runs with the team every Friday, I’ve brought my friends over for brunch and coffees quite a few times and they have never disappointed us. Amazing food.. Amazing coffee.. Friendly staff.. 👌
Located on busy Auburn Road, the FoodStore Cafe is frequented by locals, university students, school Mums and people who work nearby. It looks like it does a decent trade and there’s a good atmosphere when you step inside.
I was invited to try their food. The menu is extensive and broad. A mix of traditional breakfast, brunch and lunch fare, with some dishes with a slight twist. The chef is using his platform to experiment and try new things, and I encourage anyone who goes here to try the specials. I enjoyed one of the specials which was the thyme mushroom toast with spiced cauliflower, roasted cherry tomato, goats cheese hummus, kale. The lamb and kale salad was particularly nice as well. The breakfast burrito was pretty good, and was saved by the salsa. Coffee was decent.
The interior is very light filled. Rustic, but not trying to be rustic. Shades of auburn, brown, brick, wood and tiles. Very friendly staff and baristas.
This café is catering to its audience. It’s almost a throwback to pre-instagram days where it was about customer service and churning out good food. Making a connection with your local community and servicing their needs. My only comment would be that presentation could use some minor tweaks. Less is more. Manu would not be asking “where’s the sauce” that’s for sure! Let the food sing. Less razzle dazzle.
In conclusion, a great local café. If you’re driving by, stop in for a coffee and meal, you might end up staying longer than you think you will.
The food store cafe, an unassuming cafe with excellent brunch options that had me salivating at sweet potato, corn and quinoa fritters!!
I have had my fair share of fritters for brunch, and I can honestly say that these are the best fritters I ever had😊 fritters came with fresh pickle tomato salsa mix with avo and house made beet root purée on bottom which give really different taste and look to fitters, drizzle with lime yoghurt! Each ingredients worked so well together and contributed to such a refreshing dish.
My partner had the Acai Protein Bowl its a completely paleo bowl for gym junkies gluten free granola is completely different from another cafes
The service is great , very friendly staff. The food store cafe is worth a visit regularly. I will certainly be back. Great sitting outside whilst the food presentation is gorgeous. The chef had naughty smile on her face with kids and always welcome customer with great smile on his face
I love this place. Excellent food and the best service. I love the various salads and the hot meals. Very friendly staff who get a coffee in front of your quickly and are always friendly and helpful.
Nice coffee which is a little acidic but has a nice lingering finish. Had the egg and bacon wrap which was alright but didn't particularly enjoy the sauce in it. Staff were friendly and prompt. Nice open space.
Just tried the beef burger, did not anticipate how delicious it would be! Perfectly cooked and prepared, and the friendly staff are just delightful. Will be back regularly
The older brother has no idea about customer service. Never looks you in the eye and is just rude. In the wrong industry and needs to change his attitude.
Not good. Tried here a few times..the kitchen is in bad shape...everything I've ordered has been horrible. The pot set yoghurt used to be lovely now it's inedible...few little bird seeds thrown on top of split yoghurt and Ive never had a good coffee here- get some decent beans and chef or it's not looking good.
Tandoori Chicken Wrap. Special taste
WOW OH WOW OH WOW!!. New managers have done a superb job with the menu. Always great service, and the coffee is by far the best on this side of town. Food is always fresh and the chicken tandoori roti wrap is to die for. Will remain a regular for sure!!
Must visit!. Definitely worth the drive..Amazing food and great service! Keep it up
Don't bother. The staff are not engaged in the notion of service. They need to understand that if they have no customers, they will have no job!
Abhorrent. Worst lunch out we've ever had. Dried out felafel. Polenta corn fritter without flavour. Gross!
Seems to have gone downhill since new management have taken over. Staff wearing track suits, smoking out the front not a good look especially in this area.
Also with the addition of a tv just takes makes it a bit more tacky.
Such a shame
Seriously Never Again. Have walked past this place a number of times so me and the fiancee decided to give this one more try. Ordered 2 ham,cheese & tomato toasted sandwiches and a can of coke zero for $17.50. Where to start the service hasn't improved and we were rudely asked if we were eating in. Well for $17.50 you betcha we were eating in. The waiter came out with the toasties and just basically chucked them down on the table without saying a word. Even better was the fact our sandwiches were not even toasted. To top it all off was the guy who served us our food then came out the front and had a cigarette. I mean come on. I can't see this place surviving as there is way too much competition around. Even better is the service or should I say lack of. Wouldn't recommend this even to an enemy.
It's great again -under new management. I had been a few times when it first opened but was a bit nervous about booking for my Book Group after seeing the negative reviews. However it is close and has easy parking. It was a great experience, the service was extremely good and we were warmly welcomed. We all enjoyed our meals and the coffee. The Book Group were very happy with the choice. It was so good I am planning to take a friend this week for her birthday. A great spot.
Such a pity! Beautiful food, TERRIBLE service. Blonde woman needs to find a job in a factory AWAY FROM PEOPLE. All the staff were rude, slow, and utterly hopeless. Asking for a bit of milk for my tea (yes THEY forgot) was like asking for a kidney. Based on service-wouldn't go back if it was the last cafe on earth
I have been a few times now but cannot do it any more as the staff particularly do not seem to b able to produce what I would call customer service. This is very sad as I have heard this also from several people in the area...
What is their problem?. As a Hawthorn East local I have been meaning to get to The Foodstore for months. The look is sophisticated and although cafes are starting to sprout around the Camberwell/ Hawthorn area it still remains somewhat lacking compared to groovier more inner city areas. As the canine and I had to walk to the other side of Glenferrie Road on a car collection mission we stopped at The Foodstore for my staple morning diet of flat white and muffin ( self confessed muffin queen/ addict). Great venue but vibe stoney immediately....the place was virtually empty so the staff had no excuse of pressure. The blonde who served me couldn't crack a smile in fact I would call her snarly...I politely asked for my high maintenance coffee and muffin pointing out I would be outside with the canine. Well.....I went outside read the Progress Leader from cover to cover and still no coffee etc. Peering through the window I caught the eye of the blonde serving but apparently haste wasn't on her agenda..in fact I think she was having a really bad day... Finally the coffee etc was delivered by some young guy who promptly pulled the fags out of his back pocket and shot around the corner for a drag. Haven't really struck such rudeness from the blonde..or slackness from the boy for......as long as I can remember. I certainly won't be going back and am telling all my local friends to avoid at all costs. A huge shame. And by the way...pottery mugs might be retro but they're foul to drink out of. Apologies to the owners but as I've had a food business's myself I feel you need the truth.
Awesome. First time I have ever written a review but credit where credit is due...very hard to find a nice cafe to grab some take away lunch, as I am a rep on the road I buy my lunch most days. I have to say best toasted chicken Turkish bread I have ever had and sensational coffee! Give it a go....
BEST breakfast I've had out - EVER! Seriously, those baked Spanish eggs on beans & chorizo where the bomb!! Cool vibe too - I'm so glad I live close to this one!
GPS Joe
Looks the part - nice menus, attractive layout, fresh food, enviro-spin. Fail on burnt (black carcinogenic) toast, forgetting our coffee/drinks order for over 20 minutes, rude abrupt barista when he brought another table's order (the other waiter was charming), food okay but not fab (baked eggs with chorizo, bagel with salmon), woman at entrance was grumpy even when we walked in and asked for a table. Pity the whole experience wasn't better...
Sofia Levin
The Foodstore is essentially a café that showcases Raw Material’s products, from stocks and sauces to jams and relishes. If anything, it feels more like a providore with seating than a café. Everything inside is charming. On top of the pastel-yellow tiled tables are vintage Spanish food tins posing as cutlery holders. Seventies style cork lights hang from the elongated ceiling, shining a homely glow over the warm, wooden furniture.
