Review Dosa Cafe - Hawthorn

One of the best Indian Restaurants. Very tasty food and good service.

Couldn’t get the order right, small portions, very expensive. We ordered six items for takeaway. They left one main out. Was it intentional? Maybe. It’d be an easy $20 for nothing. When we came back and told them one item was missing, they wasted another 20 mins of our time making it. No complementary item for wasting our time. Just gave and ‘off you go.’ Check the photo for the size of takeaway portions. The curries are about $20 each. Ridiculous. Honestly, the food was well made but same standard as 90% of Indian restaurants I’ve been to. The goat curry was basically all bones. I would honestly estimate 50g-100g meat. For $20. The place was empty, and we waited there a long time. That’s always a bad sign. To the owners: happy customers come back, angry ones don’t. We gave it a shot and are not coming back.

Delicious South Indian food, fresh and authentic

I decided to give Dosa Cafe a try today in my search for delicious Biryani. As a die-hard Biryani fan, seeing Goat Biryani on the menu always delights me. Having said that, I've had a variety of Biryanis from various parts of India and have a good sense of how they taste. My thoughts of the Biryani at the Dosa cafe. - The first impression was that the biryani was excessively wet and that it lacked flavor. The mutton was cooked well, however it felt like boiled meat added in chilly rice. The rice was overcooked and extremely sticky. Overall the Biryani had no taste or flavors. I wouldn't call it biryani in first place. I was quite disappointed with what appeared to be a nice place. If my order had been termed "Mutton rice" instead of "Goat dum biryani," I would have given a better review.

One of the best Indian restaurants around Hawthorn. Have visited them for more than 10 times. Slightly on the spicier side, the flavour are authentic esp. the dosa chutneys and sambhar. Their Indo Chinese is probably top notch amongst Indian restaurants around Melbourne. Parking can be a challenge. Chef Praveen deserves the full credit for this review.

We ate dosa here and it was so delicious..😋🤩💯

What a great find! We have been looking for a dosa place close to home and now we have found one! The food is fresh , tasty and served by helpful staff. We will certainly be back.

We went there along with the other family friends with no expectations but after having tried most of the varieties of food we all loved it amazingly. Place is neat with good ambience and the staff are overwhelming. Overall we all were happy to be there and it's a place to be revisited.

Best food in Melbourne, the dosa are pretty yummy feeling like having food in india. Loved it. Highly recommend.

I was ordered a couple of plated schezwan chicken noodles as I was observed that it was properly cooked and made to eat without any taste and the pieces of chicken are not even real and not even able to eat properly as it was even frozen and I was unhappy with the food they serve

Best place in Melbourne to get good traditional Indian food. Definitely recommend. Good customer & ambience.

Delicious food, excellent service. Not only is the dosai extremely delicious but the service is superb. Must have: dosai! Price wise is reasonable. Definitely worth going and trying.

Dosa is one of the best starter here !!! I had the chicken dosa which was amazing crispy and had the perfect masala !!!!!

Amazing Indian authentic food, especially Dum biryani both chicken and goat. I have tried all the Indian restaurants but this completely reached my expectations

This is the first time I ordered dosa from Dosa Cafe. The food came cold, the Masala Dosa Set was tasteless, did not taste like dosa. The masala was sandwiicded between two round pancake like dosa. I have never seen masala dosa served this way. The pancake dosa tasted like flour with no salt. The sambar was so watery more like coloured water with onion bits and one carrot piece. The onion dosa and cheese dosa was dry and burnt. Very disappointed with the quality. Waste of money, never again. Thana

I hate to leave a negative review but we made an order tonight with Dosa Cafe and it was one of the worst curries I have ever had. The flavours and textures were horrible. We ordered the Butter Chicken and the chicken tikka masala which are normally a super safe option, the sauce had a gritty texture and tasted absolutely nothing like curries we have had before ( We’re from England so we have had ALOT). Everyone has difference expectations and standards but I think my biggest problem was the cost. I feel for the quality this place is way over priced. I’m sorry but I can not recommend this restaurant.

Ordered a Dosai takeaway, came home and it was burnt. Disgusting! Waste of money
Thats My Food
I used to go here a lot when I was studying at Uni. I have eaten Idli my whole life, but I had chili idli for the first time here and it was love at first sight with it. They have a lot of amazing dishes but I think they are the best in preparing Indo-Chinese dishes that we all love and want more of.

Been here 4 or 5 times. Food is decent but the last time I came there was plastic off the frying pan inside the masala. The waitress decided to be rude and argue with me about whether it was plastic or not. Whatever it was it was not edible. Not coming back.

As I write this review we have been waiting for our food for almost hour and 45 mins! No joke!!!!!

This is not the first time we have had a delayed service from this restaurant! Incompetent staff! Restaurant is always empty however wait time is beyond imagination- food is average hence can’t justify high price and wait time!

This is the last time we are eating from here!

Waste of time and money!

I am so angry right now it is beyond joke!

Dosa cafe! Big fail!

The prawn shezwan fried rice is really good. We had that along with Manchurian which was also good so I think overall their Indian Chinese menu is good. Staff is friendly too. Will go there again 😊

others arrived even later so that by 9pm, the tables were busy and the waitress. was rushing between each to have us all efficiently served. There are many vegetarian options. The dosas are authentic. with light crispy pancakes, and spicy fillings. The saag paneer curry – a usual favourite for me – never looks

Good portions and very friendly service. However the Briyani and vade lacked certain spice flavour (can't put my finger on it.. it's not tasteless but it lacks that flavor) the idly was average.

📍Location:332 Burwood Road , Hawthorn
🖼Ambience: I felt it could have been more lively place with some soft Indian music but overall calm ambience
👩🏻‍🍳👨🏻‍🍳Staff: Quiet Reserved
🍛🍲Food: So i happen to be craving to have some good spicy Indian Biriyani and guess what this was one of the best biriyanis i have had in Melbourne.
We had a Chicken Dum Biriyani which was spicy and was cooked to perfection with the right aroma and authentic Indian spices to uplift the taste which was accompanied with curd.I totally loved it and will buy again!
✅Overall :4/5 Must try their biriyani!
Trekking Food
We came across Dosa Cafe after walking out of D'Tandoor (down the road) for bad service, and so glad we did! As soon as we entered we were greeted with a smile. I love butter chicken so ordered it. My Sri Lankan friend suggested we also order paneer tikka and fish masala. All the dishes were delicious. I never had paneer tikka before, it was so soft and nicely flavoured with tandoori. The fish masala was the sofest fish curry I've ever had, it was melt in the mouth. We were really full but then my friend saw kulfi (ice cream) and described how delicious they are, so we ordered the mango and pistachio. Omg they were perfect - you can taste the mango and pistachio in both. Will definitely go back.

We had a huge samosa, and pretty good flavour. However the biryani was not great. Service was mixed, the one waitress was a little flustered at times and struggled a little.
Srishti Nagpal
Firstly, the food is pathetic. We ordered a samosa chaat. It says that it has 2 samosas but either they were too tiny or it was just one samosa in it because the serving was very small.
Also ordered a masala dosa. The filling was completely bland. Moreover, while I was eating, A STRAND OF HAIR WAS FOUND INSIDE THE MASALA. That’s disgusting. I left immediately.
Secondly, the service is pathetic. The staff is very rude. They have no courtesy to greet anyone entering the restaurant. No water bottles on the table.
Save yourself some money and time. A BIG NO TO THIS RESTAURANT.

They have awesome biryani. always our favourite for take away when we are hungry. We did have upset stomach with their south indian food twice so staying away from that.
Madam E The Vegan
Service was terrible. Was told we couldn’t get a particular dish because they apparently ran out of spinach but could do another spinach dish??? Whaaat??! It was a very confusing experience. I had higher expectations of the dosa since it’s called the “Dosa Cafe”... There are better Indian restaurants in Hawthorn.

Wanting to leave a review after trying the food there. My partner and I were craving curry, and walked past this place and turned back inside to give it a go. Immediately we were greeted with excellent service, the waitress Carita was extremely patient with us and very eager to help.
The food was great. We ordered our first dosa. These are HUGE, but very tasty. Also go some vegetarian Korma and samosas.

We walked back past Cafe Dosa to go to the cafe next door, and Carita ran after us to return our bag to us. One of the best waitresses I’ve had.

I have visited Dosa cafe almost 3 times now... good food ... has improved in taste. We always like the chicken 65 and onion masala dosa !! Staffs are good and very gentle.
Kunal Goyal
Pathetic food. Absolutely shitty. The food was only tasting of uncooked Indian masala. There was no other taste apart from lots of , over added masala. There's a far better Indian place down the road, called Aaangan, rated the best in Melbourne for Indian food. Try it out. You will never go back to Dosa Cafe. Dosa cafe might be good for Dosa as per their claims, but they just don't know how to cook North Indian food.

After running out of options , I decided to give this a try simply because it was near my home and I was craving South Indian food . Everything is dull about this place - food , service , ambience .
My partner ordered kingfisher beer - it wasn’t served cold . Nothing worst then a not-cold beer on a warm evening . Urggghh!
Food - dosas were very bad accompanied by tasteless sambhar and bad chutney . The pickled given along side made it edible and I am pretty sure the it was a bottled pickle that one can buy from any Indian grocery store .
The Indo-Chinese noodles tasted alright but nothing great either . Too much ready- made sauces in there . But atleast it way better then dosas etc .
This place Is NOT recommended if you want to eat tasty food .
I

Definitely the best dosa I've had in Melbourne! Prices are sooo reasonable for the huge portions of the dosa. I've also tried their Indo-Chinese menu and that was excellent as well. Most Australians won't understand what on earth is Indo-Chinese cuisine but it's one of the world's best cuisines that only Indians will know about!

Service is always bad and vada and sambar are hard to break with spoon last time.
its dining restaurant but music plays so loud that people cant talk at all

Convenient location near swinburne uni with good deals for lunch($9-$11)! The portions are a little small but their pricing makes up for it I guess. Service definitely not up there but if you're just there for a quick lunch you'd hardly notice. I enjoyed the butter chicken - can't say anything about authenticity but definitely tasty :)

The entrees are a die for. But can really improve on the quality of the authentic dosa. The dosa we ordered were slightly under cooked. The curries served with them can improve on flavour too. But the samosa chaat was a 10/10 ! Absolute stunner. Sad the main let us down.

We have taken our little family here since the week it opened. I've converted my husband to Indo-Chinese and my kids to Dosa. Some of the lightest and crispiest Dosa on offer. The Irani Chai is heavenly. The staff are just darling. In our top picks.
Pruthviraj Mohite
Worst customer service. Not even eligible for 1 rating. tasteless food and dumb staff. Poor management. Owner trying to save labour cost, by giving worst service.
I ordered the lamb vindaloo for take away. Pretty happy with it- not too greasy. Prompt service. Will definitely go back to try out the dosa.

Excellent little place. The dosa was massive and delicious - totally forgot how much I'd been missing it. Cheap, healthy and perfect for a sit-down lunch or takeaway! Enjoyed it and will definitely be back.

Been wanting to try this place for a while. Service was very pleasant and food was delicious! Definitely worth trying one of the Dosas. We also had the plain Dosa, Lamb Rogan Josh, Paneer Tikka Masala, Naan and Saffron Rice! Really yummy and will be back. Loses 1/2 point for the lack of background music.

Good food, very inexpensive prices. Taste is very excellent every time I prefer to go to this restaurant. Highly recommend chicken korma loved.

Disappointed that a simple 2 items take away order which they said would take 15 mins has taken 50 mins! Very disappointing. The poor girl just kept saying 5 mins. Need to work on timings please

Fantastic meal tonight for five. Authentic food with great Pakora, Chicken Tika, Uttappam and Masala Dosa. Great value and very friendly staff.

Been ordering from Dosa Cafe fairly recently and this place has the best indo-chinese dishes that you may find in Melbourne. The curries have a south indian touch to it for example

curry leaves in chicken manchurian etc but that's how i love it.Have heard good reviews about their dosas from friends.
Nitin Kulkarni
The best dosa is here! I had plain dosa, set dosa and mysore masala dosa here. And all of them were simply superb. Unusually for a restaurant dosa, the dosas were not dripping oil. The chutney and sambar were very good to. We also tried the schezwan veg noodles which was by far the best Indian-Chinese dish we have had in Melbourne.
The ambience and service were very pleasant. They made us feel welcome and revisit. I would definitely recommend this place.
