Review Colourful Yunnan - Hawthorn

Criss Mi
The service is bad and not friendly but i can understand why, due to staff shortage and busy. I give 3 star not because of waitress but because of the food.. quantity is so little and charge so costly. I hope the owners can see this review and hire more staffs and don’t so stingy with the food. But the taste is delicious which i like the most.

Tasty authentic Yunnan Cuisine. Make sure you book a table, they are super busy in peak hours. Love their mushroom/fungus dishes increasing the flavors

A good place to have nice Yunnan style foods. Food quality is brilliant and well designed environment.

Fantastic restaurant, consistent quality across the years (might have been even better in our most recent visit!) Dishes pack lots of flavour and have a good level of spice, the portion sizes are quite generous. My favourites were: 🍄 Stewed rice with mushrooms/铜锅牛肝菌闷饭 🍖 Lijiang ribs/丽江风味腊排骨 🍲 Baked bass with truffle/松露生焗鲈鱼 🥥 Paoluda drink/泡鲁达 - a unique and refreshing coconut flavoured drink Clean and spacious environment, friendly service, and bonus points for the decorative fish tank 🐟

Great good ! Delicious okra with garlic! 4 people and we all full ! The spicy level is awesome! Go for mild if you couldn’t handle the heat :)

It’s a hit and miss kinda restaurant. Great hygiene but definitely a very expensive restaurant.

Been to this place at least 5 times now, and it's really hit and miss.

Service - you could get a smiling waitress that's polite, or one that pretty much makes you feel you are wasting her time and throws cutlery at you. Food and drinks can come at any order, once literally a drink came end of the meal as we were about to pay. Waitress said sorry impatiently and walked away.

Food - some really good dishes, but recent branching out to really bad dumplings and overpriced drinks is a concern. Meat and seafood consistently good, but don't bother ordering veges of any kind. The noodles are amazing , but dessert is meh. As I said, hit and miss.

All this, of course, if you can be bothered queueing for a long time!

Much better and consistent places around, but doubt the management cares what I write here as their business is so good.

Really lovely food and lovely service! The staff were really friendly and helpful! I loved the food! It was really really spicy and I drank a days full of water but I just couldn’t stop eating it!

Came here for a big family dinner. We booked a private room which was really nice. The restaurant is beautifully laid out, very clean and modern. The service was fast too, and our waiter was very kind and hospitable. I love that there are pictures for every dish on the menu, but it also makes it so much harder to order as you’ll want to try everything. Overall, the food was very delicious and flavourful.

This place was very unique and all the food is presented amazing. My apologies for the half eaten food photos as it smelt so good before I remember to take photos. I recommend this place.

Great service. Great food. Must order the quail eggs which were yummy. The noodles and fried rice on the lunch menu were really good too. Will be returning!
Sunny Days Melbourne
The food here is probably the best out of all their other branches. Service is usually good and I appreciate the consistent quality of their offerings. Most of their dishes have a good spicy kick so be prepared for your tastebuds to go numb. A great alternative in Hawthorn!

Been here for quite a few times and I always have difficulties in choosing the dishes due to too many choices and pictures on the menu would make me wanting to order every item 😀 Though a bit pricey for certain dishes, they are indeed delicious. My goal is to try every single item in the menu.

Definitely recommend ordering the lamb ribs. Probably one of the best ribs I’ve tasted! The portions are pretty big. If there’s two of you you’re probably good with one side and one rice. Unless you’re keen for a lot leftovers to take home!

Colourful Yunnan is an old place actually, at least been on the map for a long time before it got more well known among the general public. Before that, it was pretty much a student lunch go-to place. I remember the story of it all started years ago on Flinders lane in this two-story space with narrow entry. Honestly, don’t think I would love going there now with a pram :). Their main focus has always been on “cross bridge rice noodle soup”. This noodle soup with its rich flavour and super hot temperature. It can cook your raw fish on the spot type of hot!

Heard great things about this new shop of Colourful Yunnan, we are huge fans of the carlton store. Now have been here a few times and always had great experiences!

Today we ordered the coconut drink which was my favourite. Quail eggs, another favourite. The signature fungi rice, beef potatoes, and a stew. Everything was lovely! Service was quick and friendly! Will be back!!

Food is tasty with good amount of spice without being too overpowering ( or with some other Chinese restaurant where they use lots of flavour to cover up the less fresher ingredients). The stewed rice is really nice and they ran out of the ‘colourful rice’ so will need to be back to try that.

Staff is friendly with smiles on their faces and actually says ‘thank you’ etc Any Chinese restaurant with that kind of service is highly rated in my books !

Place is roomy however too spacious that it can be hard to hear if you’re sitting on the bigger banquet table.

Overall, will be back :)

Great high class Yunnan restaurant with spicy dishes like the Chilli chicken, beef and lamb. The herbal soup was also a delight with interesting colorful fruit juices in test tubes. The quail eggs dish in nest is a must try. The crab dish with sticky rice was also good and the dessert sticky pan cake was delicious too.

Yes it was amazing dinner and almost half the menu was ordered .

Min cost for room was $380 which was far exceeded. The meals was simple amazing .

Fish was well prepared, lamb well deep fried. Soup was well prepared . Just amazing that a place could have set up.

Must come here with 10 plus friends so you get to try all their menu.

Will return soon.😁

Tasty food. Although the signature rice noodle(the one with a lot of small dishes) is more salty compared to other similar restaurants. but I love the shrimp(don’t remember the exact name) and lamb. The sticky rice small pancake with brown sugar syrup was the best. Could not stop eating that. It’s crusty on the surface. Sticky and chewy inside. With sugar syrup on the top together with some tasty powder. Very special and impressive.

Pretty tasty, smaller portions than the Burwood one, but more details to some dishes. Venue is clean and modern, has a coffee/brunch venue vibe to it

I tried different restaurant for colourful YUNNAN. Decoration is really like traditional Chinese style, food are really yummy. Service are professional, staffs are friendly. But this area is hard to parking. Highly recommend if you have family gathering or event. They’ve got private rooms.

delicious and authentic Yunnan food, very busy venue but food came out very fast and it did not feel crowned even though every table was taken, thanks to the clean and modern fit out, and very spacious layout. Price is very reasonable considering the big serves. If one thing could be improved, I would suggest some of the waitresses need to be more friendly. Will definitely come back again and make sure to book in advance.

This was my first time trying the food at one of these Colourful Yunnan restaurants. I must say that the food is actually really nice. I do believe the price is justifiable also. (If the price is high, then most likely, the portion is big too. P.S. You can ask for takeaway boxes here.
From the dishes we ordered, I found the flavours to be interesting and sometimes strong or spicy, but all things that I can handle.
The level of service from staff was great too, they all seem to be hardworking and attentive.

The best Yunan Chinese Resturant in Melbourne from my opinion. Spicy and crisp is how I’d describe majority of their dishes. If you like Sichuan, Hunan dishes you will love this place. Very reasonably priced considering the taste, quality and ambiance. Will definitely visit again!!
