Review Miyazaki Japanese Restaurant - Hawthorn

Great food and very reasonable prices, takeaway is quick and delicious

I was a bit worried at first as the waiter could not tell me about a dish, then sent back my order for a tasting dish because I didn't book it in advance, then they were out of the sake I ordered. Not a good start. But then the dishes started to arrive ... seaweed salad and some of the best pork gyoza we've had, followed by grilled eggplant and a wonderful take on unagi (eel), finished with strips of beef wrapped around enoki mushrooms. Each dish was excellent.

Astoundingly bad. So much quality food on Glenferrie rd, there is no reason to come here. The food was so bland, small servings and badly presented, featuring the worst sushi I have ever had in my life. Staff didn’t know what Bento was! had to point to it at on the menu.

On arrival atmosphere was warm and cozy with friendly staff. We ordered the 4ppl Dinner Special D. We ordered the ox tongue and was told they dont have any. We ordered the Soukai beer and that was also not available. The edamame came out first and we waited for an hr for 2 small salad to be served. Another hour wait (2hrs) and the Katus oysters arrived in a tiny plate. It looked like a croque, each was approx 3cm tiny. 30mins wait and the okinomiyaki was served. They were very delicious. Another 30mins wait and we were finally served our sashimi platters It came out once again in a tiny plate with 4 tiny salmon sashimi, 4 very fishy and old abalone slices, 4 mini sushi rolls and 2 tiny egg sushi. By this stage all of the other 3 tables who came in after us had already dined and left. Surely this cant be the portion you serve for adults. By this stage we were starving and hoping the mains would be a more decent portion. 4 decent size sushi soft shell crab was served. Then the fried rice and fried noodle came out in these small bowls. How do you share these amongs 4 adults? The male waiter then arrived at our table and advised they do not have icecream therefore will replace it with takoyaki balls. We questioned, do you think the portions you have served us is adequate for 4 adults? It felt like they have mistakened and served us a meal for 2. He answered that this is how the kitchen serves it. We didnt get the tempura prawn roll and upon his return from the kitchen he said 'the chef said it has been served, we have washed our dishes therefore cannot check the plates" We advised that our plates for the mains have not been cleared and is still on the table, if you look at the plates you can tell we are missing one dish. He couldnt giv us a response. We paid and left feeling extremely dissapointed and ripped off . Extremely frustrated and angry . We do not recommend this place. Left feeling extremyl ripped off!!

The service was rather disappointing, unlike what others rated and commented. Maybe my taste buds were wrong, noodles were not salted nearly enough and they actually substituted one of the key ingredients without notifying me. It was honestly overpriced for the quality.

Lovely restaurant. Both food and service was excellent! Our waiter was polite and softly spoken. The feel of the restaurant was warm and comforting. 5 stars and will be back!

Came here on a groupon deal. Food and services more than exceed expection. Delicious food and plenty for 4 people. Polite and attentive waiter and waitress.

We booked this restaurant 2 weeks ago .Kids gave us voucher as a present. Today 10 of February we came , driving from Bentleig 40 minutes and thiss place was closed .They did not even call us and say that they will not be open for some reason. Very disappointed.

The wait staff are very nice and friendly, but it's not gonna work when I came for the food. The portion are not bad but the flavours needs a lot of work to make this place work. We had the Groupon deal and it came with a set menu for two. Some was too salty (karaage chicken) or too sweet (sukiyaki) or (microwaved edamame) bland. Lamb cutlet was way too oily. And so was the fried rice which tasted like lamb. The same oil that was used to cook the cutlet was used to cook the fried rice. I'm very disappointed.

Ordinary food, totally uninspired and tasteless. Moderately priced but too expensive for what you are served. The dining area smelled off, like cat urine. Give it a miss.
Sylvia's POV
Surprisingly this place was basically empty at around 1pm. Two customers had finished their meal as I stepped in. I was the only one dining.
I tried a salmon Bento for $13. A lot of variety was included in the Bento; octopus balls, sashimi, salad, pan fried salmon, miso soup, and rice. I also ordered extra salmon sashimi.
The meal was average at best. Portions ran small.

Bought the voucher and came with my mum. Decent customer service and above average food. Was worried about the food quality before arrived but its much better than what I expected.

Went here with a Groupon voucher and while I don't think it was as bad as other reviews say it was very very average. Service was adequate and staff were friendly but the food quality wasn't the best. I agree with others that there are better options for Japanese cuisine very close by. Thanks but probably won't be back

Worst dining experience ever! I write this as we are sitting here waiting since I need something to fill our time, if a long night away from the kids is what your looking for then look no further, you will have hours to sit and talk to your partner while you wait for your food to come out! Portions were small and flavours were average this was our first Japanese experience and I'm pretty sure if this place was in Japan it would of been closed down! We will be sticking to the local shopping centres for our sushi! We watched as 4 others who came in after us eat and leave and even contemplated leaving to get something to eat or resting our heads against the wall and having a nap. We watched as people walked past eating ice cream and thought I'm sure we could go get ice cream and be back way before the next course was served. Looks like a maccas run is on the cards on the way home! Booking was at 7 now leaving at 8:31 as we can no longer wait still have more dishes to be served but oh well give it to the next booking I'm sure they will be happy to get their meal quickly! Don't recommend eating here and will never come back! With every ping of the bell we hoped it was for us but sadly it wasn't lol!!!

The food is average and pales even more in comparison if you take into consideration the amazing food options situated alongside the same strip they are on. If you looking to get the job done, this will do but if you're looking for a pleasant experience, you'll find better options from any of their neighbours.

I came here with a friend for a birthday dinner. To start off the night, we thought we'd celebrate with sake and picked the second cheapest option (330ml), only to be told it was sold out, along with the cheapest option. We were then recommended the next one on the list that either came in a small (160ml) or big (720ml) option, with the larger option being $22 over what I was willing to spend. Cancel the celebratory sake, we had to opt for beer & green tea.

Hoping things would pick up, we ordered the "Dinner Special A", which comprised of the renkon chips, kakiage (tempura veg/seafood), mixed gyozas, sushi & sashimi platter, wagyu steak and Japanese fried rice for two people. We probably should have realised the downhill slope we were on after the sake, but naively decided to stay.

The renkon chips & gyozas came out within a reasonable time; the gyozas were decent enough, but the renkon chips weren't super crunchy. They all went down in about 4 minutes.... Then we waited.... and waited...and waited. And this was just for our drinks. We were seated outside since it was a nice night & our waiter kept saying that it was very busy (which was probably the justification for the late food). As we peaked inside, it didn't look overly busy, so unless they had 50 unexpected people upstairs, it was a manageable crowd for dinner service.

Finally our drinks and the sushi/sashimi platter came out. At this point, we were told the deep fryer had gone kaput and the kakiage was going to be replaced with a sloppy seaweed salad. Delicious replacement? I think not. Either way, after what felt like a 25 min wait, we gobbled that down. By this time, another table sat outside and ordered. Our plates got cleared & we waited for the wagyu steak & rice. What then felt like another 50 minutes, we watched the other table get their assortment of food as we sat patiently for ours. The wagyu steak turned up and was small & fatty. Still quite tasty, but usually things are when you're starving. The rice to accompany it turned up way after we had finished the meat. If I wanted to eat a bowl of rice on its lonesome, I'd do that at home.

If I'm going to point out one positive thing, one staff member was casual & friendly. That was it. Take away that waiter & this place is locked in as a no-go zone. The food was average and there are so many things going wrong here; I'd save your pennies and stay in.

purchased a 4ppl voucher at groupon for the followings, the dishes was present in 2 set, each set serve 2 ppl.
Edamame
= reasonable
Tomato salad
= 2 ppl eating a single bowl!!!!!!!
Chicken karaage
= taste good, but extremely small dish
Lamb cutlet
= tasteless and very tough
Tempura prawn
= a small prawn sushi roll cut into 4 pieces, this is a joke!!!!!!!! no where near the real tempura
Sushi and sashimi platter
= sashimi is ok, the rest are average
Sukiyaki
= salty!!!!!! only 5-6 piece of beef
Fried rice = pepper taste only, me and my wife feel very sick after ate 2 spoon, kids just dont want to eat at all!!!!

it takes 30mins to serve Edamame/salad/chicken/ sukuyaki and another 30mins to serve the rest.
2 adults and 4&6 years old, everyone is hungry after the dinner, and even feel sick!!!!!!

Groupon should put this restaurant into blacklist!!!!!!
Stay away from this restaurant ! seriously ! the worst dinner experience in my whole life!!!!!!

This restaurant has a great menu with a wide variety of food and the atmosphere is very relaxing and not too busy. I enjoyed a katsudon meal with lovely flavours and the gyozas are some of the best I've had. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

The food is average and coming out too slow. We waited for 1.5h and still can't get all the foods we ordered. This is so disappointing. We will definitely not be back.

RECOMMENDED. Went on a Groupon voucher. This was my BEST Groupon food voucher experience. I'd become very wary after a few poor experiences. We booked for an early dinner for four. Staff were pleasant and efficient, and the restaurant clean and comfortable. The set menu was fresh, with good variety and quantities. The fried chicken was wonderfully tender. My favourites were the sushi/sashimi platter and the lamb cutlet (tender and great flavour). A hearty miso soup with meat, egg and vegetables, excellent edamame beans (something I'm not usually keen on), a simple salad and a rice dish rounded out a good dining experience. The green tea was refilled automatically, although it was a little weak. And free parking after 6pm in Glenferrie Rd an added bonus.

Poor food quality and way over priced. Service was alright, the waiter was running off his feet (a one man show). No need to try not worth your time.

The food is ok, but the speed bring out the food is too fast we haven't first dish, they already bright the third and fourth one, me and my guest could not chat, and try to finish the food on the table. Otherwise, the food will be cold, in restaurants we want to talk and enjoy the food, not like lunch, we have something quick. Hopefully, they'll improve on this.

Went on a Groupon, was utterly disappointed. "Degustation menu" forced two people to share off one plate for ALL 8 ITEMS including the soup and salad, and all 8 off us had to share off the one sushi platter. Sashimi was not fresh, and everything was either too sweet or salty. Really poor service, waitress was like "what?"...excuse me, do you know your manners!?! They didn't take away the previous dishes before serving the next, filling the table with dishes. Servings were ridiculously small, at most places we usually go on Groupon we are usually really stuffed, but this one, we were left hardly full. Not even worth the Groupon price of $45/2 people let alone the "original price of $96"...no chance we will be back, felt we lost face taking friends to such a bad restaurant.

We had a nice experience at this little Japanese restaurant, but overall the food was average. The staff were very friendly and efficient, and the restaurant was quite full on a Saturday night.

The standout dishes would be the fried chicken (chicken karaage), which was full of flavour, crispy and went really well with the sushi mayonnaise. Another very tasty dish was the sukiyaki, which was full of cabbage, mushroom and delicious broth.

Avoid the lamb cutlets, they were overly peppered and pretty average (not very unique or interesting in taste).

The sushi we had was okay - some of the rolls were under-sauced (a pet peeve of mine when you cannot taste/see mayonnaise or other accompanying sauce), and some of the rice was overcooked and some of nori soggy. The sashimi was fresh, and were generous cuts.

Another pet peeve was the very small teapot we had for our green tea - there were four of us, and the pot could probably only fill around three cups at a time - a little frustrating to be constantly demanding tea, and probably annoying for the staff too.

It was a nice night out, but we probably will not be back.

This is our favourite local family restaurant when we are after great Japanese food in casual dining surrounds. Good value and great tasting Japanese food. We love the delicious Japanese stirred fried noodles, comes in either beef and chicken and we have tried them both! My teenage boys love the bento boxes at $16 that comes with well portioned servings of meat (choice of beef, chicken or pork), steamed rice , Agedashi tofu, Edamane, Californian rolls complete with miso soup and their teriyaki beef udons are my other son's absolute favourite. If you are after good value (read- NOT dirt cheap) tasty Japanese food in a family friendly environment, then I thoroughly recommend checking this restaurant out.

By the way, they also have a great lunch menu on offer as well.
Drjames
Really good, welcoming and excellent food. Love it that they have brewed in Japan beer (as opposed to brewed here under licence). Entrees excellent and so were the mains - loved the octopus balls and the chicken something 😎
FOOD TRIP
Cute little Japanese restaurant. Food is decent, but nothing really stands out. Quite average. Great music though. Got to hear my favourite Japanese song of all time. Points. No flavour. Felt like we were just drinking hot water. Very average. Disappointed they only used regular salt. 5/10. Salmon Sashimi (4 pcs) ~ $12

Yuck!
Chinese cooking "Japanese" again- seriously does not work!

Totally tasted like chinese food, which I like, but NOT when i think I'm getting Japanese food.

For some, Anzac Day might be a day off work. And it clearly was for the staff at Miyazaki. We walked in after a long day at work ourselves, and for 40 minutes we waited, just for a glass of wine. The food came 10 minutes after that, with half the meals still missing. We saluted some comrades who had also given up on receiving any sort of reasonable food and departed ourselves. Off to KFC we go...the popcorn chicken was delicious.
Coffee And Food
Foods coming out not in time. Finished some dishes and the rest arrived slowly. Portion is just far too small. Flavours were ok and the staff need to be on their feet fast while dinner time. Now have to look for another dinner place to fill up my family stomach 😕

Went here for dinner last night. Very average. Gyoza had too much cabbage in it. Tempura wasn't as light as I am used to. I had a beef ramen which had corn in it which was kind of odd, not my cup of tea. The ramen did not have the rich flavours that you get from top notch places like Hakata Gensuke (that has an outlet down the road). Service was not very attentive, our plates sat at our table for quite a while before being cleared.

Friendly service, i had Sushi-Sashimi combo lunch special, food is great, nicely presented, very simple decor inside but clean, definitely i will be back!!!

First of all, good and friendly service but understaffed.
We waited for 50mins for our food (2 people) and the food was below average. Will not be returning.

Absolutely Amazing Food! So flavoursome and fresh! The staff was lovely & the service was nicely timed! Tempura was yummy and the Waygu Steak was cooked perfectly! Can't wait to go back!

I loved the food here its nice. The waiter is so gentle and good going trying to explain me what food is good. The chicken kaarage is awesome, and the fried rice is good. The infrastructure of the restaurent is good.
Hungry Hippo
Their Japanese food is just ok. Not ground breaking but not bad either. Nothing excited me about the place (food, service, decor-wise). With the same amount of budget, I would probably try some place else.
Nathan Horgan
Very friendly service and great timing with the courses. Not in a huge rush to go back but I wouldn't have any issues. There was one issue that brought the experience down and that's how many tables they've crammed into the place.
Elletee
We loved the degustation meal there last night. Every course was yum. I can't remember when the four of us have enjoyed our meal so much. The octopus balls were great, the hot pot soup delicious. Wagyu steak & crumbed pork, tempura vegetables - the dishes were never-ending. Restaurant is somewhat cafe like. Comfortable large chairs and friendly efficient staff. Thank you!

Really liked this place.....good to get another Japanese place in the area after one of my favourites closed down. Loved the food here especially the teriyaki salmon. Sauce was amazing & a stand out. Sushi great here too. Have been back a few times & will continue to come back.

Food was good enough but not overly exciting. Service was efficient too. Liked the ambience of the restaurant - small yet cozy and makes you feel at ease. A good place to visit if you're in the neighbourhood.

Came here on a groupon voucher and loved it. Sooooo much food we ended up canceling the dessert that was included in the voucher because we were too full. All the food was delish especially the wagyu steak. Service was fantastic too. We will be back for sure!

Authentic Japanese. I love the food here. It's authentic Japanese, the cook speaks Japanese and the food tasted how Japanese food should taste. Unfortunately there are a few establishment around Melbourne claimed to be Japanese but is not. the food here is fresh and tasty. Sashimi, tampura (the crunchiest I had for a while), wafu beef & octupus ball were all excellent. The staff courteous and friendly. We tried the Kaseiki sampling menu and loved it we will come back for the full set Kaseiki for a special occasion.

Everything was outstanding! The staff, food and the yummy lycée cider was a must try drink. My friends and I were surprised at the reasonable prices for such yummy food, I Highly recommend trying out this Japanese restaurant :)

I'm a very strict vegetarian, and typically find I am only able to eat one tasteless side dish at restaurants. I have just eaten the most delicious, clean food at Miyazaki, who thoughtfully offer a huge range of vegetarian options. A must for all vegos!
Amanda Aitken
Delicious, healthy food and lovely service. We'll be back!

Much improvement!. Came here before when it first opened, wasn't impressed by the food and staff was bad.
But last Sunday we decided to give it another chance, and I was caught by surprise with the amount of improvement!
Staff was friendly and helpful with the menu. Daily specials were great, loved the renkon chips.
The special sashimi platter $18 for 12pieces was a really good deal.
Ordered the teriyaki chicken for main and some gyozas and tempuras.
The chicken was great, authentic Japanese taste. Overall food quality and service was just so much better than last time.
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Decided to try this place out given there was a queue at Suzuran and we couldn't be bothered waiting. Menu was extensive - feels like a combination of the menus from Hakata Gensuke, Izakaya Jiro and Suzuran (all nearby). The pricing of the menu was kinda strange..between the red and surf clams there was a dollar price difference. If you ordered as a sushi, one was more expensive yet if you ordered the sashimi, the other was more expensive. I was impressed they had the red clam/akagai as many places don't. It was very disappointing...the akagai was tasteless and watery as if it was just defrosted and washed..the other sashimi we ordered looked dry without that usual sheen you get when the fish is fresh. We had ordered a platter that was supposed to have abalone sashimi which we clearly did not get. There was an item on the menu we had asked the female waitress what it was. All she could mutter was that it was "fish". When asked what type of fish (eg. white or pink fish), she just said "seafood"...I hate to say it, but she was pretty hopeless as a waitress unless she thought we were the ones who were really dumb. Everyone else was a little more helpful and keen to please. Don't be fooled by the Japanese greeting as you enter - the restaurant is definitely not Japanese run. We walked out spending over $70 between the two of us unsatisfied, around $40 more than we had planned had we gone to Samurai for our usual dinner set plus some extras. Good luck surviving in Hawthorn, a suburb spoilt with a choice of good Japanese restaurants and takeaways!

Awesome food, good price, great service!!. Great dining experience tonight! Love the food! Fresh sashimi, good price!! Lovely presentation of the food. Brought a take away food, come with miso soup with decent price!!!! Will come back again!!!

Good service, terrible terrible food. Went for dinner and was advised they had run out of rice and most of their fish for sashimi.

Was recommended their ramen but it turned out to be flavourless soup and noodles the consistency of Maggi instant stuff.

Found prices very high, would not return.

Delicious Food with Great Service. Had lunch at this restaurant today with a friend. The food was delicious and the service was great. Will recommend this restaurant to my friends and will come back again.

Terrible Service. What's wrong with the waitress there? i was standing in the restaurant for like 15 mins and no one come to me at all. I tried to get an eye contact with the waitress there, but she's just keep talking on the phone and ignore me.
Dvanheer90
A pleasant dining experience!. Thoroughly enjoyed my Friday night at Miyazaki's! Great service, very affordable and excellent quality food! Would definitely recommend dining here!
Jay L
Bad and overpriced. The soft shell crab cold udon we ordered stated that it would come with alfalfa, half an egg and seafood stick. It was only after we asked for each missing ingredient that they gave it to us. The beef tataki was rough and did not come out raw like it was suppose to. The broth was just salty and didn't have any distinct taste. Although the "Japanese style" tofu (assuming it was agedashi) was actually in a bastardised Chinese form, tasted ok.

For $15-20 it fell far short of the mark.
Sunhouri
Great food. Initially quite worry that food is not going to be as good as like what other reviewer said. But It was delicious food! Really enjoy the the teriyaki chicken dish! I really unappreciated the negative comments those people put there, almost missed my good food adventure! Thank you! Definitely will come back!
Foodiee
Overpriced, slow and very average taste. Used to come to this same place for ramen under the name Mr ramen san. I thought i will give this new name a go but......
Unagi don's rice was very dry with not much taste... eel was ok
Ramen and udon soup was only lukewarm - this is the killer blow for a business offering soup noodles... soup must be served HOT!
Ordered udon but was given ramen...
Grilled eggplant - not even half an eggplant was served.. rip off!
Missed my chicken skewer order altogether... lucky for me lol
Overall - failure... as the kitchen was too slow, staff was inexperienced, overpriced as serving size was small and the taste was average at best... cannot last long in hawthorn if they cannot improve
Shallwetok
Bad food and extremely over priced. Ordered the Oyakudon, soft shell crab cold udon and a serve of sashimi.

The oyakudon was watery, the chicken was very under cooked and at parts looked raw. The egg was mixed through poorly and just looked terrible to eat. Came with salad with no dressing which was disappointing for a $14 dish. When I asked the staff if this is meant to be like this, the staff nervously responded that it's the special sauce and it's meant to be like this.

The Fried Soft shell crab was better however, the Udon was simply mixed in with sesame salad dressing you can buy at any Asian grocery/Coles. Only one piece of soft shell crab came with the dish. The udon was cooked well but for $17 one would expect some skill and value in the dish.

The sashimi was thick and fresh, but almost too thick to the point where you don't actually enjoy the combination the soy and wasabi. For $14 for 5 pieces of sashimi, it's a complete rip off.

I would not recommend coming here at all. not worth the time and definitely not worth the money. Extremely overpriced for supermarket ingredients and no cook skill involved.
Chococat02
Worst food & service. Service - waited for 40 mins for sushi and was told to wait for longer because the chef is busy.
Food - the worst sushi you can ever ask for, tasteless gooey rice with fish from yesterday's market special.
Cwcwkc
Friendly staff fresh sashimi. Had takeaway on a weekday evening, greeted and served by the friendly staff immediately. Sashimi was fresh, takoyaki (octopus ball) and soft shell crabs were both hot and crispy, not too greasy either. The cold udon was the highlight of the meal, perfectly cooked noodles with lovely sesame dressing. Will surely return soon!
Angela Elizabeth Gill
Delicious and delightful!. Delightfully friendly and helpful young staff very willing to answer questions about the menu, which is quite lengthy. We enjoyed our meal, the highlight being Unagi Hakata - all very fresh. There were many more dishes that we'd be keen to try and plan to return again soon.
Umadiddi
Awesome!. Food is great here. I am glad I finally found a nice place for ramen in Hawthorn! The owner of this place & the staff are very friendly and nice. This restaurant will definitely gain popularity in short time.
