Review Grain And Nori - Hawthorn

Best sushi around. Super fresh and tasty
Two Hungry Diners
We were invited to try out their dinner menu and we were impressed with their authentic Japanese cuisines. They're now serving dinner from Thursday - Saturday (only) 6.30 - 9.00 PM. Starting off, we tried out the Japanese Rice Ball (Onigiri) - they have several flavors. We love the unique packaging much like The Onigiris found in the convenience store in Japan. This packaging allows the separation of the seaweed and the rice so that the seaweed won't lose its crispy tates when eating it. Absolutely love it! We tried the classic flavors: tuna - but we'd love to try other flavors next time. They also sell it fresh on a vending machine nearby so you can grab it and go from the machine! How cool is that! For the main: we had The Kuro Curry Soft Shell Crab, The Pork Katsu, and the Japanese ice-creams for the dessert: Mont Blanc (Chestnut cream cake) and Matcha (Grean tea) Ice Cream. The Pork Katsu was superb - home-made style at its best. Wonderfully breaded, perfectly fried pork katsu - juicy and tender, amazing katsu sauce, and the portion was massive. Can't fault the katsu at all - good for sharing! The curry was amazing as well - the crab was crispy and soft, lovely texture! The curry was thick, quite intense and punchy! Really well-balanced, but perhaps we don't mind a bit of heat next time. And the dessert was also great - very smooth. We haven't tried chestnut flavored ice-cream flavor before and it was super nice, loving the nutty flavors on it. Overall, really liking this hidden gem. The price is right in our opinion. So...if you're after a great Japanese meal, then we highly recommend this restaurant. Top tips: Don't forget to try their onigiri!

The onigiri was my most favourite thing to eat after school or during my lunch break. It's delicious, filling, of a good price, and convenient. Now that I no longer go to school in that area, I'm mournful I can't eat there as often as I used to. But whenever I'm in the area I always make sure to stop by. It's a real hidden gem. One of the best onigiri in Melbourne!

The picnic platter was delish. All super fresh and tasty. Great service would highly recommend!

Delicious food, the go-to place for our whole family. We eat here at least once a week, and have never been disappointed.

Nice place, great staff and amazing sushi

Convenient and easy access. Perfect for quick bite

Some of the freshest, most delicious sushi in all of Melbourne. I've searched far and wide and while some come close, nothing outright beats the quality of Grain & Nori. And the best part? Not at all expensive! Highly recommended...

It’s an affordable sushi roll shop that’s affordable with great options. 10/10 for their spicy salmon and prawn rolls.
SmokinAussie
Always super fresh and cheaply priced Japanese fast food. Perfect for the Uni student cohort at Swinburne, I come here 2 to 3 times a week. Never disappointed.

This place is not only cute but the food is sensational! We enjoyed the tonkatasu, the black sesame edamame, the udon noodles and my fave the okayu don which is egg onion and chicken on rice ! Sooo good
The desserts are also a must , the miso ice cream was so unique and I could literally eat litres of it

Thanks for having us , I can’t wait to come back

Grain & Nori is a cute little Japanese joint located near the Hawthorn train station that has been focusing on amazing sushi for years. They have recently started doing dinners with a great menu of authentic Japanese favourites.

You can tell that a lot of love has been put into this restaurant and the food that they present. We tried the pork tonkatsu, kuro curry + soft shell crab, oyako don, renkon chips, and finished off with 2 unique desserts - matcha mont blanc and miso ice cream.

The tonkatsu was super juicy and crispy. The black curry was definitely something I'd never tried before but in a good way!! And the oyako don was the best I've tried in melbs. Never have I ever had an oyako don that I liked outside of Japan until now!

The desserts are a must-order. The mont blanc is a chestnut cream cake. They're a rare find in Melbourne and these guys do a great job with this! And the miso ice cream is like a Japanese style salted caramel ice cream. I'd never tasted anything like it. Everyone needs to try this for themselves 😍😍

If you're on the go, they also have a vending machine (which is very Japan) that offers a large range of yummy Japanese snacks, drinks and onigiri which are stocked fresh every day!

we were lucky enough to try their brand new dinner menu on one of their opening nights - the food was affordable (most dishes around the $10 mark!!) and absolutely authentic and delicious. definitely recommend trying their matcha latte (ask for it extra hot!) and the curry. they were accomodating enough to change my okayu don (usually made with chicken) to tofu instead! the wait was a bit long but i’m sure the service will improve with more experience.

Delicious tasty fresh sushi roll! One of my fave take away sushi place. Tea prawn is always my go to rolls and salmon onigiri is a must order as well.
The Brunch Specialist
Grain & Nori is a cute little sushi take away shop tucked away in Hawthorn.

My go to order is the onigiri. Although onigiri is everywhere in Japan (its sold all in all the convenience stores) it’s nowhere near as widely available here compared to sushi. On this visit we purchased the salmon and smoky tuna onigiri. Both were delicious and filling although I prefer the smoky tuna out of the two.

If you haven’t had onigiri before then I recommend that you give it try at Grain & Nori.

Not many varieties of sushi but it’s really convenient if you’re rushing because you can grab it to go and it doesn’t cause a mess when you eat it while doing something else! Price is alright and the service is good!

This is the best sushi spot in Hawthorn without a doubt, and i've tried them all. Grain & Nori could be the best sushi spot in the city. Love your work guys

This place does takeaway sushi like a boss! Lots of delicious options and deals - and yummy vegan/vego options too! I'm so sick of takeaway sushi places serving skinny sushi rolls filled with plain white rice and a sliver of fillings. Doesn't satisfy or nutritionally serve you - but this place is not like them! The tofu and citrus mayo and the BEETROOT mushroom was amazing! My matcha latte was the best I'd had in ages!! Note the cupcakes in the picture were a greedy purchase from the cupcake central around the corner. Also good! Anyway, I digress. I'll be going here on my lunch break regularly. Worth the 10 min drive! Enjoy 😊

Their sushi are good, the name used to be momo sushi if im not wrong and they have beetroot rice, which is awesome coz people are more into healthy stuff lately, and so do i. Their display is quite interesting and their service is okay.
Spirited Stardust
Interesting selection of vegan sushi - the standout being the beetroot rice shiitake and green bean roll.
Hubby had the schnitzel sushi sandwich & enjoyed it.

The Roasted Tea Prawn sushi rocks!!! Consistently high quality sushi here, good service and nice to wash it all down with a Matcha Latte. Highly recommended!
Sylvia's POV
I visit daily and sometimes mulitple times a day. Best Sushi in Hawthorn. Matcha green tea lattes have significantly improved in quality also.
Only downside is if I come quite early in the morning, not a lot of options are available yet.
Other than that, the service is always quick and pleasant.

This is my go to sushi place in Hawthorn. The food is freshly made and tastes very good. My faves are salmon onigiri and panko prawn. The salmon onigiri's seaweed is crunchy and the rice is deliciously seasoned, it isn't just a plain white rice . Panko and spicy prawn are also crunchy despite the sauce/mayo inside. They also have different variety of sushi and reasonable price. Plus the staffs are really nice. I usually ask for the sushi to be put inside a paper bag so i can easily eat it while going to class and the staffs gladly do it.

Btw, Grain and Nori used to be MOMO, however everything(food, flavour and staffs) stays the same.

Soft shell crab roll, delicious.
All their rolls hit the mark.
Try their cold brew coffee, refreshing.

My favourite sushi in hawthorn. If you've been getting your sushi anywhere other than here I feel really bad for you. The ladies are very nice and although I hate stools I'll brave them for this sushi. They do specialty rolls, my favourite is Nutty Professor with peanuts and satay chicken. I come here like three times a week and I'm unashamed.

Sushi oh sushi where art thou? There isn't a suburb I know that doesn't have sushi or some form of Japanese fare, and gratefully I approve! Sushi is the healthy snack I reach out for when on the go, and when entertaining friends. In Glenferrie, Momo Sushi is one of my top choices...The sushi here is as fresh as the smiles and warm service. But I must say there are a few specialities that I'm fond of here, including the schnitzel sushi exclusive to Momo's. I've craved for this sushi many times, and have enjoyed coming back for more when in the neighbourhood. The sweet chilli chicken and Prawn sushi are also my favourites, and the salmon rolls are as fresh as ever. Price is another reason I keep coming back here, and at $2.70 on average, it's extremely competitive, especially when city sushi prices have escalated to over $3.50. plenty of room for a sit-down meal, and service is fast to boot. I've been in a hurry before, and the lovelly staff here are superb at getting me off to a good start for the day. Great food, fresh supplies and great service - 4.5/5 from me.

Some of the best sushi I've had. Always right, always tasty, and nicest service.

It's a bang for your buck and actually fresh!
I'm always there when I'm at uni to get my lunch/breakfast.

My favourites are the (new) beetroot mushroom: Very tasty rich mushrooms coupled with fresh beetroot on the outside, ICDC: Meaty, crunchy & vegan. and Avocado Cucumber: Smooth, creamy avocado coupled with fresh juicy cucumber.

:)

Best sushi I've had! Tastes so fresh and so cheap. The ladies who work here are so friendly too
My friend and I can't get enough of the Thai chicken
Little Foodie
Nice place, really noisy, the Thai Chicken is so good, but they have a big range of sushi and other food, you can sit or take away, and they are not to expensive

Excellent food and service at Momo. Ordered sushi platters and was served in a professional manner by Melissa who sorted out my order and had it made in time for a party I was hosting. No fuss, excellent value. The party guests loved it. Much recommended.

Outstanding Service. The california rolls and green tea latte were delicious. Extra points for the outstanding service.

Bumble-Tumble-Hungry-Bee
Bumble-tumble-hungry-bee. Definitely one of the best kept secrets in Hawthorn. Warm service with friendly staff, and the offerings - you get the authentic roles made with fresh produce and for the adventurous, other bold and exciting flavours . And bonus for the non-coffee drinkers, best-est soy green tea latte ever!

A cut above the rest. Delightful little shop in the arcade. Worth searching it out as the sushi is fresh and made with love. Sufficient varieties to satisfy the discerning person . The udon is also recommended, as is the coffee. The proprietor is the most charming person you can deal with.
Jun
I can eat them everyday if I lived nearby.

Robin believes that a hands-on approach is vital. In fact, he’s so involved in Momo Sushi that he is often spotted washing the dishes.

“I like washing dishes!” he says.

On a more serious note: “I think it’s important to be quite hands-on. I just enjoy what I do. My leadership style is to lead by example. Doing the washing, sweeping the floor, making the coffees. My staff see that everyone’s equal.”
Katherine Chiu
The lady that served me was very very friendly and this is an affordable Japanese sushi place. Often in these cheap places you'll find that most of the staff there are really nasty. But in this place they are lovely.
