Review Dumpling King - Hawthorn

Dave Curro
Bit of a mixed bag, some things are absolutely delicious, some a bit bland. Prawn wanton soup contained cold uncooked prawns, which were quickly replaced with piping hot delicious ones, but something odd has to be going on in the kitchen for that sort of inconsistency on a weekend dinner service. Prices are super low though, so I'm gonna work my way through the menu here and update my review later.

First time trying their food and I’m impress with the dumplings. Try it with their chilli as it goes well with it and the chilli is not spicy so it’s great for those who can’t take too spicy. Restaurant is not too crowded so it’s an overall nice ambience to dine in. Affordable pricing too and generous portion of food.

Noone goes here and I love it. 7pm Friday night my girlfriend and I are the only people here. The waitress wears her mask properly. A very covid safe place. Food is pretty good, price is great. I reccomend the fried pork dumplings and the Amazing Calimari. I do not reccomend the prawn dumplings.

I feel like a number of bad reviews here may be based on what to expect in a upper end restaurant. I'd like to take it back a step and rate it for the type of restaurant it is; cheap, quick, and clean. The service staff are dressed very casually, but is friendly and prompt. The food is tasty and comes out quickly. The prices are VERY modest. Five stars for the price point. 👍 Service = 🧑🏻‍💼👩🏻‍💼👨🏻‍💼👩🏻‍💼/5 Food = 🥟🥟🥟🥟🥟/5 Serving Size = 🥡🥡🥡🥡🥡/5 Price/Value = 💰💰💰💰💰/5 (cheap!)

Great noodles, had the Shanghai style noodles with pork. Good, large serving size and PLENTY of yummy honey glazed pork in there. Recommend for sure!
Courtney Anthonisz
Had a vegetarian noodle soup. The broth tasted like oily water. Would not recommend. The dumplings were okay though.
Isis Ignácio
Delicious fried rice there. Price is good and portion is large enough to share.

I ordered via uber eats and picked up my order. I had the prawn dumplings which were excellent, the fried pork dumplings i didn't like much as it had a very strong taste, bu were cooked nicely. Also had the veggie spring rolls but they were over cooked, they tasted nice. I had cutlery added in the bag, which i didn't really need/or asked for, so sad to put in recycling.

Poor service. I placed my order right after seating. Waited 20 mins and started noticing people who arrived later than me getting their orders. I raised this with the waiter and instead of looking to follow-up on my order, he kept saying "no" - those parties arrived after I did. It wasn't just one party either, most tables around me were empty when I arrived and they were now occupied and eating. Because of the poor attitude of the waiter, I raised this with the manager, who was equally as incapable to deal with the situation. She seemed like a deer in headlights and didn't know what to do. In the end I just ended up leaving as I wasn't convinced anyone really understood or cared.

📍Location:656 Glenferrie Rd,Hawthorn
🖼Ambience: Cozy and calm dine in place
👨🏻‍🍳👩🏻‍🍳Staff: Very humble and friendly staffs
🥟🍱Food: so if any of you want to try some authentic Chinese cuisine this is the place i liked so far, we ordered a Chicken Satay which was one of a kind, tasted sweet and those soft and coated chicken was just amazing with the sweet sauce and sauté vegetables.
Then we ordered pan fried beef dumplings and was not as expected since the beef just tasted like normal beef sausage but not complaining as it tasted good.
And we had ordered pork buns which was so soft with the outside and pork filing on the inside, it was steamed and tasted heaven.
✅Rating:3/5 since the dumpling dint meet my expectations but the Satay stole my heart and its a must try dish.

I had the pan fried pork dumplings. While the filling itself was fine, the dumpling was very oily. Yes, it is pan fried, however, the dumplings were very oily; too oily to simply attribute it to the fact that it was pan fried.

Had heard a lot about this place and wanted to try it since the longest times.. and I wasn't disappointed at all..
The pan fried dumplings were too die forrrrrr
Overall a super experience with good value for money..
However it was short staffed and too crowded for a weekday..

Delicious dumplings and friendly staff. Please note the menu photos on here seem outdated and we were surprised to see more affordable and different menu options in store. Beware the fried dumplings are more oily than we would have liked

Disappointment. Waitress delivered the wrong dish then refused to change it, and tried to blame me. Food was stodgy, gave me a tummy ache. Understandable why restaurant was almost empty.
Look elsewhere - there are much better options just down the street.

ok I would say 3.7 rating for this place. The setting is basic but the duck is awesome and dimsum were awesome. Just a wonderful Chinese fast food place!

I don’t usually eat dumplings but colleagues rave about this place .. lifting it up on a pedestal like it was a new discovery! Anyhoo have to agree they were pretty good. Need to control yourself otherwise may find that during chit chats that ur munching more than your belt size can handle! I have also tried their noodles as well.. pretty good.
Pip David
Reasonably priced and tasty dumplings. Better offerings if you can go into the city but overall it is well worth trying. Pan fried dumplings were the highlight, fried rice could use a bit more Flavour. Food came quickly and service was also very friendly.
Good Food Good Mood
We went to Dumpling King last night for dinner and were very disappointed. Having visited once before and been quite pleasantly surprised I had expected much better then this. We started by ordering a variety of dumplings, prawn, beef and chicken as well as two serves of spring rolls. The prawn dumplings were my choice and when they arrived, luckily I cut into them as they were steaming hot.

That’s when I realised they didn’t look like prawn and queried it with staff. I’m not sure how but they had misunderstood our order as pork. As a non pork eater I can’t tell you how much this frustrates me and how regularly it happens that I receive something with pork in it that’s either not in the description or in this case was pure error/misunderstanding.

The actual prawn dumplings themselves took an eon to arrive and when they did weren’t much chop. I even found a prawn tail inside. Surprising for a place professing to be the king of dumplings.
Main wise we ordered the Beijing shredded eggplant which was very oily and the honey chicken. This we couldn’t actually see on the menu but it duly arrived after it was ordered. I guess it’s a staple of westernised Chinese food.

The best dish was definitely the satay chicken albeit the pineapple within definitely tasted canned and the dish itself was quite small relative to the honey chicken. I enjoyed the vegetarian noodles too but overall we weren’t particularly impressed and would likely rule out returning

I am on a lifelong quest for perfect dumplings. On the pilgrim path, I came across Dumpling King in Hawthorn. We ordered the ordered their Sichuan wontons in hot spicy soup. The verdict? Hot. Spicy. I could not get past nibbling the edges of the wonton wrapper before my lips were on fire. So beyond the obvious adjectives in its name, I cannot describe their taste for you. However if you are a chilli fiend, then I guess this one is right up your alley.

Fast, cheap, friendly, tasty. Everything one would want in a dumpling restaurant. Came for early dinner. Tried a few different dumplings the pan fried pork were the best, the pan fried beef okay but avoid. Had the Langzhou beef noodles, very good, the broth rich and tasty but less salty (or MSG heavy) than typical which was good. Staff were very quick to take our order and anything extra we wanted to order. We liked it. Will be back

The food here is amazing and the cost of food is easy on the pocket. The service here is laid back but still friendly and very very attentive.
This place has a homely feel and the food tastes like what I would imagine authentic Chinese food to taste like.
Lizzie Hodgetts
Delicious dumplings and very generous serving sizes for main course dishes. Very friendly staff as well, always attending to customers needs with a happy attitude
Joshua Percival
Great, reasonably priced dumplings and sweet and sour pork. Wait for food is virtually non existent. Highly unlikely you'd need to spend more than $40 to feed two.
Followthefoodmelbourne
Good, cheap dumplings. The fried pork dumplings had a nice, juicy filling (hate it when they’re too dry inside) and the pork buns had a subtle sweetness to them. Good place to grab a cheap meal with a big group of friends. Service was efficient and the food came out very fast.
Joshua Tean
Pretty average food. Nothing really special from what we've ordered. Fried rice was bland, noodles were too oily. Only the dumplings were good, which I guess is the shop's specialty since its called dumpling king

My favourite place to have dumplings!
Soups and duck fried rice is also nice.
Reasonable prices and fast service.
Great location for this place.
Will recommend this place.

Been coming here infrequently for a few years and it feels like there has been a recent change of owners/ chefs. The noodle soup dishes ordered were a bit hit and miss with some broths well seasoned while others were quite lacking. The duck fried rice was a major hit though. Would strongly recommend ! Service was very pleasant.
Cynthia Giang
In the past I've had issues with the food being quite oily. I recently returned and was extremely content with the duck fried rice - extremely flavorful, smelled delicious and the portion was filling. The dumplings were pretty good, although the chicken ones I had didn't taste super fresh. The pork ones however, were well seasoned and tasted better.

Nice atmosphere.
but table we were seated at was only half set, had to find our own bowl and chopsticks...

Recommend the rice cake dish 👍

xiao long bao had no juice in it and spring onion pancakes were very doughy.
Melb_food_trend
Always nice food but last week they really messed up. Ordered veg dumping, received meat dumplings, also we were given tea which we didn't order, so we though it might be complimentary. But they charged us later. Disappointing.
StepiiGM
Ordered three things: fried rice, xiao long bao and vegetable pan fried dumplings. Fried rice was a bit weird (sorry to say 😅) they made it a bit sweet that somehow doesn't work. I would prefer the regular chinese fried rice. However, vegetarian dumplings were great!! The xiao long bao too, if only they serve in a bigger bamboo steamer, otherwise they stick together and tear part the delicate skin. I was losing most of the soup inside 😂.

Dumpling king has a huge menu. But as the name suggests they specialise in dumplings. Always a solid place to go after work or a few drinks when you're in Hawthorn. Forgo all the fancy chinese dishes and just do dumplings for the best value for money.
Sylvia's POV
The first time I ate here was at the beginning of 2016. On that occasion, the dumplings all 4 people on our table had tasted unappetizing and smelt strange.
I vowed never to return after that.

However, today I returned and had some prawn wonton soup and it was delicious. The staff were kind and service was fast.

We come about once a month, and it's usually pretty good dumplings and main meals. The food can go up and down, particularly the duck fried rice. Loved it when they used to serve it was iceberg lettuce sauteed through, but maybe next time. Service is minimal but they haven't missed an order or a drink in all the times we've been there. There are a lot of tables so they are quick but don't mind if you linger. BYO for sure! Great for groups as the food comes out fast. Just a tip to specify that you want dishes staggered or to order in parts because they will bring out all the dishes at once otherwise. Not even enough room on the table! And I recommend bringing cash as well! They have a minimum for cards.

Being a student at Swinburne, my friends and I were looking for a quick bite. Close by was Dumpling king, glad we went there.

We ordered the "Pan-Fried Beijing Dumplings" pork and the "Chicken Ribs in Salt & Pepper on Rice".
Service was good as the waiters were friendly, and the food was great for the price. Quick to come out and a large portion too.

What I do notice is that the menu on Zomato has not been updated so beware of that when you do visit!

Overall would definitely recommend to anyone nearby looking for a cheap and fast eat nearby.
Flyingpotato
Some of the better dumplings in Melbourne! The Sichuan wonton noodle is spicy, although oily sometimes. The steamed prawn dumplings and the pork buns are great. Prices and service is pretty standard for dumpling restaurants, but the restaurant can get crowded- which can make it quite unpleasant if sat next to a loud group.

Overall, DK has quickly become our go to dumpling place!
Mo
Not great. Was not greeted by floor staff, despite virtually empty restaurant, after getting a table was ignored by staff and had trouble getting their attention to order. Vege dumplings (panfried) were well priced at 9.50 but were extremely oily. Ordered a vegetarian noodle dish which was also extremely oily. Still edible, still well priced, but there's definitely better options in the area.

It is uni holidays and everyone has finished their exams.I'm however stuck at uni helping new International students who have just come this week and registered. BUTFriday was dead quiet. So off I went to Glenferrie. I was in search of a cheap meal so I went online to zomato.com and found Dumpling King in Glenferrie. It is right outside the train station. I found that they have a new menu and its limited. There are no business lunch specials rather there are chef specials. The old menu on zomato had their lunch prices on there so I was left wondering if I went to the wrong place. The service was so so. Not very friendly and attentive. They do employ uni students.I had the prawn wonton soup ($11.80). The broth was a bit meh- it was bland okay and I had to add in some vinegar. Since table service took a while I ordered at the front counter. And that's where I noticed the prawn dumplings. My meal came in five minutes.
Tony
Walked in to a near empty restaurant, sat down for 10 mins and didn't get served. The chef and the waiter looked at us but didn't respond. We had to walk to the front counter to order our food. We ordered the Sichuan style dumplings in hot and spicy soup, 6 fried beef dumplings and the spring onion pancakes. When the food quickly came out, the fried dumplings was raw, the meat was still very pink and mooshy. We were told that it was due to the carrot's juice that made it pink. It doesn't take a chef to obviously tell that it was in fact raw. They took it in and in a few moments gave us the same ones but refried, it was still raw. We decided to abandon the fried dumplings. When the Sichuan dumplings came, it was cooked well but the soup was just bland, lacked seasoning. The pancakes were also bland and the hoisin sauce did not go well with it. Barely touched it. Ultimately it was just a disappointing experience. Would definitely not return. Here is the picture of the raw dumpling, you be the judge.
Danni Ceravolo
Ordered hot and spicy soup with wontons and noodles. Menu described 12 pieces of wontons but only got 6. Staff apologised for this but price still the same. Felt cheated 😖. The wontons had prawns and were delicious, would have loved more! Soup was perfect for a cold winters day. Will try another dish next time.

Some weeks back a friend and I was at the
Dumpling king we have been there so many times before and this night when I was ordering a drink I seen the male staff member behind the counter pick his nose then did not wash his hands before getting my drink and opening it
This made me feel sick a female staff member brought it to me and I said to her to take it back due to the male picking his nose
As well the walls have food in them and need a good clean

Great local place to get a quick feed. Terrific pan fried pork dumplings! They were definitely the highlight for sure. The noodles with mince & the san choi bao was ok but I've had better. Would definitely return for the dumplings though!

Visited the Hawthorn restaurant on the weekend. Dumplings being one of my favourite styles of enjoying a Chinese meal. Alas this time it was a disappointment both for food & service.Ordered some food for the kids to get them rolling, with the waitress then attempting to remove / request all menus when the adults were yet to order. Perhaps was told 4 or 5 times "no" as we'd not ordered....quite bewildering how staff blindly follow set in-house orders, regardless of what the 'customer' is saying...Peking duck was say 6/10 (reasonable), while vegetable dumplings were bland, flavourless, gluggy. Most disappointing. S&P calamari was returned twice as did not smell or taste right. Was assured when asked it was fresh, but did not buy that and both servings were returned. Waiter was quite indifferent about the topic, let alone apologetic. Finally when paying, would not split the bill between 2 families. Capped off a sub-standard experience (service & food). No future return to this scene of the crime.
Hello. Imnikki
Calling themselves Dumpling King (with another shop in Box Hill), one would expect the dumplings here to be mind-blowing. Unfortunately they do not live up to their name. The saving grace here is the portion size - very generous for the price. The namesake dumplings here are big and meaty but the skin is too thick. A few dumplings will fill you up quickly. On the bright side, you definitively won't be leaving this place hungry. The quality of the noodles here are quite spastic; some days they are full of flavours, some days I am given the impression that there is a ration on seasonings. Same goes for the main dishes - you never know when you will hit the flavour jackpot. Service is pretty good, much friendlier than the service you get at the Box Hill branch.

Sonali Sahu
Love this place. Value for money, dishes that you can't go wrong with. Tastes for the newbie's tongue. Our go to place for soul food. Love the Sichuan dumpling soup.

Ordered pork dumplings and wonton soup. Dumplings were okay. Wonton soup was average. Portion size are decent and didn't wait long for food to be served.
TINA JOHNSON
The food was good value for money. The portion sizes were big for the price. However, dont expect too much quality with these dishes. The fried rice didnt have too much going for it, however, the dumplings werent too bad. A good place in hawthorn if you are looking for a quick feed of dumplings.
Hungry Hippo
Good portions, good service, and good pricing. Their dumplings are ok. I wouldn't say they're king of dumplings. A big menu for a dumpling place - maybe too many choices because not all dishes are good. For example, the soup of their Taiwanese beef noodle soup is very weak. You can tell they haven't cooked it long enough.
A Black Sheep
We often come here for a quick meal after a long day. We love the pan fried dumplings here, crispy skin and juicy inside. I particularly like the special duck fried rice. The problem with this place is the quality of the food is not consistent. Sometimes they are really well cooked and delicious. But sometimes it can be way too oily and the bottom of the dumplings are burnt. But overall, good value.
Eat To Live
Was petty crappy food, no taste and looked like it had all been thrown together. Wonton soup was the best of a bad bunch. I never like the looks of pink chicken!! Service was ordinary to bad, considering there were only 3 other tables taken. If you don't eat here you are not missing much at all. Wouldn't go back.
Gina
Quick service. good food. Fried rice is praised. Lanzhou noodle soup 8 good. love the authentic dark vinegar to go with the dumplings! a bit pricy n some of the popular chinese dishes compare to other alternatives with similar level.

-----16 Jun, 2015-----

Lanzhou Noodles. Nice soup

Amazing food.. we ordered veggie dumplings with supreme soup. Simply Yum...Although the chicken dumplings in schewan soup were good they brought my hubby to tears( as it was spicy)!! and he kept on eating it..
Maddy
I wish I could give a negative number as a review.
Staff are rude and inattentive. Walked in and wasn't even greeted or shown a table. The waitress comes over and is ridiculously rude and impatient. In the end my meal was lost in the kitchen and never arrived. No sympathy or solution offered. Just left without paying for that meal. Ridiculous. Give this joint a miss

Average food, BELOW average dumplings. Not fresh. Wontons were clearly frozen and still stuck together. No customer service
Sonya Smith
Not my usual. My husband and I eat here regularly after work. I ordered my usual duck noodle as a takeout tonight because my husband was working late. Sorry guys it was nothing like it normally is. 2 pieces of duck, no flavour....hope this is a once off mistake!!

Beautiful. Food was fresh and delicious
Portions are huge
Prices are very reasonable and staff was very nice
Will come again definitely

Long wait for not much. Food OK
45 minute wait between courses ridiculous ..

Wouldn't return here

Great attitude, Great food, Great price. The staff there are so lovely, the food is amazing value and super yummy, big portions. The music they play there is the best! i think the staff must rotate their playlists because sometimes you'll get K-pop, other times Lil Jon, great little quirk about this place. LOVE IT
Nofidelity
Worst service ever.. On ordering, the waiter was that difficult we didn't even bother sticking round for dinner.
H.O.M.
I am currently eating the Sichuan style twice cooked pork. It's damn good food. The cabbage is crunchy and fresh, the pork is sticky and tender and the sauce is spot on. Side of rice is fluffy and hot and the service was friendly and swift.
Tzehungl
Sucks restaurant. The food is average and unwell prepared. The vegetarian dumplings is almost the same as the dumplings from those asian market (wondering is it all homemade or few only). The service is poor as well, worker not enough and ignore customers when they are busy. Overall, its low quality restaurant.
Unhappydumplingeater
Downhill Slide. Service average. Soup bland. Noodles cardboard. Dumplings OK.

Doncaster Shopping Town. Now at Doncaster but no listing. ??? Good quality, fresh and cheap. Chilli sauce very hot!!!

Delicious food, generous portions, prompt service and a clean establishment! We will definitely be back.

Good Experience!. Had a quick dinner at DK and had fantastic Beijing pan fried dumplings and great Peking Chicken ( no not duck) and was moist and really enjoyable.
Very good service and a great place to go when you just want a dinner after a movie or a family dinner so you can try quite a few of the dishes on the menu.
Emmylou Hocking
Absolutely love Dumpling King, beautiful food, clean restaurant, and wonderful service. Every-time I order a takeaway, a couple of the waitstaff always sit with me and have a chat. Highly recommend this place.
KC
Oil, oil and more oil. Ordered the pan-fried dumplings and it was more like it was deep fried because the dumpling was universally brown, not just the base. Had to actually use paper napkins to soak up the excess. Also ordered the Shanghai noodles and that too was slick with oil. Noticed a little pool of oil at the bottom of the plate when we moved the noodles around. Awful!
J
The service was a slow and inattentive, I had to actually leave the table to get some service at one point but the pan fried dumplings were worth it (and I was super hungry). The other dishes we tried like the steamed dumplings were average, and while I wouldn't rush back here again as overall it was fairly lukewarm dining experience, if I wanted a quick dumpling fix I'd definitely drop by.
Disco
Great Asian Fare. Went here last night for New years dinner at 5.30. Surprised with the negative reviews as we had a brilliant dinner. Ordered special fried rice, 12 pan fried pork dumplings, garlic prawns and Mongolian beef. The dumplings were great the filling was delicious and the dumpling case not too thick. The special fried rice was brilliant the addition of ice berg lettuce gave it something different. The Mongolian beef and Garlic prawns were delectable. Now we did get in early but the service we also received was second to none. Overall we had a great experience and would be back again.
Sue Zhang
Overrated. I cannot believe the positive reviews this place has received. Made an account so I can share my experience. This has got to be the most over priced crap asian restaurant I have ever been too. Food was bland. Dumpling skins were excessively thick. Xiaolongbao was the size of a tennis ball rather than the usual dainty balls of deliciousness with translucent skin. As a devotee of the box hill branch, i visited the hawthorn store three times and disappointed all three times. I'd recommend any other restaurants up or down Glenferrie Road. Living in the area, I often walk pass the venue, have never seen it having more than 1-2 tables of people. I don't think this place will last.
Bridie Murphy
Didn't know anyone could stuff up dumplings so bad!. Went here last night and it was really quite disappointing. Dumplings were average at best and had to send a steamed plate back as the were completely cold in the middle and didnt so much as get a 'sorry'. Noodles were terrible too. Service was equally as average as the dumplings. All three of my friends felt the same and none of us will be going back. Just isn't the same as the one in box hill, this one completely misses the mark. Don't bother.

I come here every week or two. Great place for lunch or dinner. The staff are good and the food is great! I usually get dumplings and the mongolian beef noodles. I come here with one other person so the meal comes out to under $15 per person including tea, entrée, main and dessert.
MYT
Worth a second visit. We ordered the fish and chives dumplings in superior soup. The dumplings were lacking flavour, the filling was texturally strange, and the soup was a too peppery. Mushroom and vegetable steamed buns were decent, good proportion of bun to filling for me. We also had the Shanghai red bean pancake, that wasn't too bad.

Service was ok, not terribly attentive, considering we were there before 6 pm and the restaurant wasn't busy.

May return to try the famed xiao loong bao.
AJ
So good to finally have a decent dumpling joint around Camberwell/Hawthorn!! Nothing special but tasty cheap food which ticks all the boxes! Dumplings (steamed and fried) are yum and decent shanghai fried noodles.
Xian
Great dumplings but get in early. We come here often for lunch as it is just around the corner from work and has really tasty dumplings. They also server a variety of other dishes which so far I have found to be very good, especially the twice cooked pork.

The only problem about this place is that they have no idea about service and if you come with more than 3 people, or when the restaurant is more than half full then there is a good chance that they will forget your order, or just leave you waiting to find a table or order when there are enough staff to handle it.

Regardless whether it is because the dumplings are so tasty or because this is about the only place to get lunch in Hawthorn under $10, we will be back.
Blash
Excellent food. Evelyn and I went here today for a quick lunch. We had 6 types of dumplings plus tea. The total cost was $39. For what we had, we were full and very satisfied. The pastry coverings were a bit thicker than what we are used to at Shark Fin but it was soft and moist. The yeast buns were really great. Soft fluffy buns with a fantastic egg custard filling, just lightly cooked with the egg still a bit runny. YUM! The other dumplings we shared were 6 boiled chicken, 5 steamed pork, 4 steamed prawn, 5 steamed vegetarian and 3 steamed mushroom and vegetable buns. Service was a bit stretched as the place became full within 5 minutes of us arriving at 12.25pm. The dumplings were all delicious and obviously fresh. This is a great addition to the many eating places in this part of Hawthorn. Very worth the visit and highly recommended.

Great family feed. Visited on the day that The Age reviewed Dumpling King really well.

We went in just before 6pm and good job too - the review had brought out half of Hawthorn!

By the time we left, the queue was out the door and cheerfully waiting their turn.

Given the pressure, they held up really well. A couple of the floor staff were clearly drafted in, in anticipation of the Mongolian hordes that should (and did) visit on the night. Despite the lack of experience, they did an excellent job.

Dumpling King straddles fast food and restaurant, which is to say that despite a bit of a fast food feel, sufficient care and attention is afforded to the restaurant that you can relax and enjoy your meal.

The kids love 'em so we ordered a selection of dumplings, along with the Peking Duck. All were good - I'd stay away from lamb dumplings though. They looked different on the menu and so they proved to be. For me, dumplings revolve around pork, prawn and chicken. Red meats just don't seem to work.

That said, the duck was pretty good. Not great, but certainly good value with crisp skin and nicely julienned cucumber and spring onions.

They're BYO too, and amongst the dross of BWS I found an excellent Garnacha that fitted the bill perfectly.

Take your kids - they'll enjoy it as much as you do.

Excellent value, tasty food, nice ambience. LIKES IT. Was taken to Dumpling King Box Hill some time ago and enjoyed it...the new Glenferrie Road venue, opposite Lynch Street continues the benchmark..and what value..$30 for 3, though we had an alcohol-free day included tea and various platters of dumplings-more than enough and all delicious...highly recommend and if wine or beer is added we noted that prices are equally inexpensive. Will be back.
Mowie
Good cheap lunch. Not brilliant service but yum dumplings so who cares?? Best $20 lunch we had in ages!
John
Great local eatery. We have been here a number of times. It is always full, always has "locals" eating in big groups. Which is a good sign. Service prompt, courteous, and certainly a big step up from the usual . Food is always tasty, full of vegies, good sized serves and well priced. They have the formula here.
We'll be back

Clean, fresh and with a sense of humour. Last Saturday, my lady and I dined at the new Dumpling King in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, near Burwood Road, just south of the railway flyover.

The service was brisk, the menu excellent, the ambiance busy, the food excellent and the price VERY reasonable.

What topped it off was a Chinese desert that I had never had before. It was a crispy pastry cut into bite sized chunks, stuffed with a crushed red bean paste. Very Tasty.

With a liquor license to come, this new establishment will match, if not better it's parent in Box Hill, an already well established award winning restaurant.

I can thoroughly recommend the new Hawthorn Dumpling King.

No complaints. I had heard some bad reviews, but tried it anyway.

Went with a group of ten, and was really happy with the food & the service was great.
Not a 5 star restaurant, but thats not what you are paying for.

I will be going back there again

Very quick service! Very consistent, delicious dumpling!

Unexpectedly good. I know what has been said about the food and service here, but I went anyway. The food was unexpectedly good. We ordered the roasted duck, which was great with crispy skin and blasting flavor. The beef wrap was surprisingly filling and very delicious. The service was above average I reckon. Yes, we weren't offered water, and we did have to wait a while before we could place our order. But the waiter served us individual dumplings to our bowls after bring them to our table. Where else could you find this service with this price? We missed out on the Mongolian beef on sizzling plate. Another table ordered that and it smelled SOOO good we couldn't help asking what dish it was.
Gavin
Incompetent service and average quality food. Asked for Sichuan wonton noodles and was brought Beijing dumpling noodles TWICE. Asked for Beijing boiled dumplings and got fried ones instead. With so many better restaurants around, why anyone would put up with their poor service is a mystery.

Ooooohhhh I love dumplings!! Can’t get enough of ‘em! And there is nothing better than super simple, super cheap and super yum!! Steamed pork buns are delish!!
