Review Asian Chef - Hawthorn

Lester Mark
Good quality food in Camberwell. The restaurant has elaborate decor and the waitresses are in traditional Chinese outfits. Large menu selection. The live fish was the standout dish. Service was helpful.

Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was not busy and there was only one other group while we were there so the two servers were able to provide good service. As we were in a big group we were able to sample a large number of their dishes. The dishes were tasty although probably not the most authentic Chinese food I've eaten or perhaps it was because of the dishes we ordered. Dessert is limited to ice cream flavours, fried ice cream and banana fritters and ice cream.

Lunch menu is both good quality and quantity. Fro.. 10.80 to 15.80. Very good ambience. Friendly staff. However, I once found the waitress behaving rudely when we asked her If she could make the dish more spicy. That's why a star less.

I have been going there for 12 mths. Just recently changed management I think. But today was not impressed at all. My meal was the lunch black bean and fried rice. It came out within 2 minutes with cold plain rice and the outside of the meal was cold. I told the waiter who said I would get the coke, but at the register - all I got was 20% discount total price $14.17 and was previously paying $13.50. Then was given $5 of 50 cent pieces in the change so I requested a $5 note. What a shame cause last week the black bean was divine.

I haven’t been to this restaurant for 5 months! However it’s just close to my workplace. After they changed their management, I went to today, The customer service was extremely rude! Still strongly recommend not going ! I bought the lunch for $24.60 and they didn’t allow to pay credit card and I cannot remember my saving card pin! They didn’t allow me to pay credit card and they said if you happy to pay 25$, we can allow you to pay credit card! WTH? If you put in writing, I will take it. But why charge me extra money without a reason?! And I said just cancel it. And she didn’t want to cancel my order and she was rude! I think new manager really to think about how to improve the customer service. 5 months ago- service is pretty bad. i went there one day around 11.55am. And the staff said they didn’t open yet in a very unpleasant way! I was so unhappy about it. You can say it in a nice way or let me know. And they close the door straightaway! Very rude

I’ve been here a few times with family. The first few times was great, however, that one time we ordered takeaways from them, we were given sour tasting eggplants and off-tasting meat. Have not been back since.

Best Chinese food in Camberwell. I want to give this place one star so I can keep this place to myself... It looks like they do a mixture of semi budget lunch meals, but I have only been here for dinner. Sashimi lobster subsequently cooked with goose pate is not cheap but definitely good.

We walked in waited at the door for 3-5 minutes. Once we were finally seated we made our order and were told unless each individual spends $25 each they couldn't serve us. I'll never be going back to this restaurant. I would give a Zero rating if I could.

The seafood here was not only fresh but very decently priced as well. The interior of the restaurant was also designed very beautifully and I really enjoyed my dinner here. I wish the wagyu beef was a bit cheaper though 😀

Had a good and enjoyable dinner at Asian Chef with the family. Had passed this place many times and glad we did decide to give it a try.
Went on a weekday night so must say it's fairly quiet. Waitress(es) are attentive and friendly, to see a simple smile on service staff in a Chinese restaurant always makes a big difference and I'm glad this is the case here. Though I must say that it does feel a bit uncomfortable when the waitresses stand around watching us as they don't have much to do.
Food is good and different in comparison to the more typical Cantonese style of cooking you find around Camberwell. Family and myself thoroughly enjoy each dish - do try dishes from their Chef recommended menu. The free range chicken and combo stir fried dish is a highlight.
Overall, will be back again to try other things and also the hot pot!

I find myself keep wanting to go back to this place - really authentic food that separates itself from mainstream, service that's quick and polite, great decor ; but... It seems to let themselves down on consistency. There are items on the menu that simply makes you grunt in joy, but then a dish could miss the mark so much you could do better at noodle box. Perhaps there are 2 chefs in there, but definitely worth visiting

I found Asian Chef to be a rather well lit and spacious restaurant that allowed us to enjoy our meals in a pleasant and inviting atmosphere.
As we came on a weekday, it was predictably a lot more quieter in the restaurant, so we were able to ask to dine in their private dining open rooms- which provided for a much more intimate and cozy feel.
We couldn’t be more happier with the quantity of each dish, the price was definitely justified for those large portions. The Kong Po Chicken was very tasty and well marinated. However I did feel that it was lacking in colour, and vegetables. On the contrary, their tofu dish with scallops, prawns and snow peas was delightful! An overall warm and comforting dish that went very well with the rice.
Also note that Asian Chef has a weekly specials menu that offers certain dishes on specific days of the week. It’s worth having a look at, as they offer some fantastic dishes there too!

Got there with some friends last Wednesday, getting the hot pot for dinner. The price was ok according to the amount of their dishes. It was pretty enjoyable to had dinner there. The dining environment was quite comfortable. Gonna go there again

The environment is this restaurant is pleasant, like the way they decorated the store. Order the dish Chinese’s broccoli with oyster sauce it’s alright. Menu is pretty standard Chinese dish.

The food was good, I had the pipis, fried chicken ribs, lamb hotpot and porkribs in pumpkin. Atmosphere is nice but the gold painting on the chairs cheapened the look. The waiters were polite and there was good hygiene. Price was a tad steep for serving size. Overall not bad 👍 they just cancelled out fruit :( -1 in my books

not good experience with first dinning, after they send a wrong dish, and relised its thire mistake and promised it would not be charged, but they still charged (it was most expensive dish) us at end, because we eat some.

The experience started well being able to change some of the options to accomodate food allergies and they were very helpful with any questions we had about the menu. The food started coming out thick and fast but the servings didn't seem that great for 6 people. As the night carried on we started waiting longer and longer until our desserts. After being told that there weren't enough of the banquet dessert for everyone. Then we were told none were available then we were told only a couple were. The desserts were brought out almost individually and the surrounding tables were being served and catered to while we waited for the rest of the tables meals to arrive. We asked several times where the rest were and the staff kept tending to other tables. We were told that they were really busy when the restaurant only looked to be 2/3rds full. We then had to wait even longer for the bill. Then as we were leaving one of the staff made a joke about having more of the dessert available next time and then kept making a joke of the piss poor service. TL/DR AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST. SERVICE IS NON-EXISTENT!

Went for my dad's birthday, good place, a little bit on the pricey side. However the food is great, not the biggest portions through. Cutlery and glasses were clean and staff were good.

Surprised by this place. How. The name, decor and location suggests a lemon chicken, sweat and sour pork eaters heaven. Pitched at Camberwell and Hawthorn retirees in their Toorak tractors. Not so! The lunch menu is reasonably prices. Every time i have been there has been a mixed crowd and many Chinese; always a good sign. The food is good. Not sensational and not bad. A good variety of dishes. For example Bitter Melon Beef. Not something on every Chinese menu. While not to everyones taste. It's extremely bitter. It's something of an acquired taste and there are those who crave this.

Tried a quick takeaway lunch menu, and it was really good. I would definitely like to try this restaurant for a full course family dinner.
Definitely recommend to try out.

We book a table for banquet for 6, cost $488 + $18 for tea. Food quality is really bad, plating non existence.
For roughly about $85 a head, one expect better. We got half a dry tasteless chicken, half lobster on overly cooked noodle, dodgy cold dish, soggy rice, a steamed fish that smell like mud to share between us. 3 of us got food poisoning too. Places like this give Chinese food a bad name, this worse restaurant I have ever been in Melbourne. Does not even deserve a star.

Recommended place to have hotpot.
You can choose 2 types of soup and its super delicious.
Good service and ambience too.
No complain at all.

Lunch has a selection of popular rice and noodle dishes for approx. $15 each as well as yum cha. Chef can adapt most dishes to vego or special dietary requirements. The serving is huge with enough leftover for another meal. Ordered a char keuy teow and it was good without being oily.

Dinner is quite disappointing. The salt and pepper Japanese tofu is quite hard rather than soft and cripsy. The seasoning is also too subtle. Chinese broccoli is very fresh but really pricey $19 for just green veg!!

As a M7 + wagyu beef lover, Asian chef is much better than other restaurant. $158 wagyu beef banquet is most valuable price. Food is very fresh and clean, you get what you pay for. Good restaurant,

I was excited to try this place, but that excitement soon wore off. It was awkward and uncomfortable experience to say the least. Being told once we had ordered there was a minimum spend of 25 dollars...per head! From then on the night was ruined.

Old Chinese style with a modern twist, with the menu they have, the chef have a chance to play around with the dishes and become one of the best eateries in melbourne, unfortunately that's not the case here, right from the start, my dining experience was appalling, from rotting garnish to flavourless food, something needs to be done or a lot worse than this review may happen. The only satisfaction I had was leaving the place.

light and clean, but too expensive.

Seriously good, authentic Cantonese food. Close your eyes and it smells and feels like you're in HKG out Shenzen. Two menus. One for Caucasians which is intimately better than your regular and a Chinese one WITH ENGLISH! That's really to notch.

A lot of focus on hotpot in the advertising, etc., But first us the real star is there regular food. They have live fish for cooking, great tofu dishes, everything from the Cantonese standards like mapo tofu to innovative or more challenging (and delicious) stuff like offal, preserved vegetables and so on.

Can't believe it's in camberwell junction, home of insipid low risk menus.

Must try!

Had the 4 tiered hotpot (the $98 set). Food was good and surprisingly service was awesome as well. Personally I enjoyed the top tier most! Pumpkin with pork ribs is so yummy! Pumpkin was so tender and not tough at all. The only downside of this place is the price of the sauce. It's $3 and I'll suggest not to have any since you'll not take much anyways.
Food wise - awesome! Price wise - yaaaaa serious??? $3 for sauce???? That's way too much man! Food on the other hand was quite good and lived up to expectations. My friends and I ordered the 4 tower hotpot (sorry, not sure what the exact name is) and it was really filling. There was black bean pork ribs inside a pumpkin on the top level, steamed chicken with mushroom on the second, grilled fish on the third and the 4th layer was our soup for hot pot. All were really good and ingredients were fresh. Service was quite attentive.
