Review Omah's Malaysian Cuisine - Hawthorn

Jason Lee
The food was amazing! The butter prawns, bonus fish and roast duck - superb. The service though was much less than desired. Minus 2 stars. Took very long to get our order, we had to call out for them a few times and they messed up our order. Could improve on customer service. That being said, food is top notched.

Used to go here often because the crab dishes were excellent and was the only place in Melbourne. To my dismay this time, I made reservation for 2 crabs for 4 people only to be told in the day on arriving that we would only get one because they didn't order enough. I was not informed beforehand and staff clueless as to what to do after making a complaint. Common courtesy to inform patrons that they can not deliver what they promise prior to turning up. Will not return here ever again, not the place it used to be!

We were looking forward to the enticing menu, however all the food was a let down. Nasi goreng tasted the same as the special fried rice and the satay chicken was dry. Service was very poor, with a number of errors made to our order and to tables near us. We waited over 30 minutes for the rest of our order but it never arrived and decided to leave when we realised that they hadn't even put the rest of the food order through.

12/11/2016 Ordered pork hock. Was so bad don't think the dog would eat it. Was offered a replacement meal which was sweet n sour pork, that too was very average. Chicken satay skewers dry and dessert not enjoyable. Won't be going there again. Very disappointing. Lucky to be given 1 star.

Visited Omah’s for a rare evening out without the kids. The interior of the restaurant is really nice but we were left a bit disappointed with the menu. We were on a set menu and the waiting staff seemed unwilling to compromise the menu to provide a dish suitable for my wife who is vegetarian. The food was really tasty when it arrived but combined with slow service and unhelpful staff, I’m not sure we’d go back.

What a beautiful dish! I ordered many lovely dishes with my friends. amazing time! We really enjoy these delicious foods. I will come here again to try another wonderful dishes!

Great food, clean restaurant and good service. Just remember crabs are seasonal and so pricing can change dramatically, always confirm prices before you order. A very pleasant manager in Zoe!

Noodles ok but not the Hokkien noodles which is atrocious. Forget about service! The girls are more interested in keeping the kitchen staff entertained than to keep an eye on the customers in the restaurant.

Turned up and the place is closed indefinitely for 'renovations'. Was very disappointed.... don't make the same mistake I did. Need to find another place that does salted egg crab now.
Timothy Thian
Ordered the salted egg calamari, soft shell crab, and nyonya fish. The fish was a little bit fishy and the softshell crab was lacking in flavour. But the calamari was decent. Could be way better
Helena
Food was lacking of flavour, ordered the salted egg calamari, nyonya fish and soft shell crab, the salted egg calamari could be better for the price they're charging, fish and soft shell crab tasted bland, service was really nice though, but am not coming back here again.

Chili crab was yummy. You can choose different sizes of the crabs. 700g, 800g,1500g😋. Coconut <br/>Prawns also very good. Crabs can choose different flavours too, but $96/kg is a bit too expensive.

The best chilli crabs out there. Salted egg crabs...could use more sauce. <br/><br/>2nd time here, this time for my girlfriend's birthday dinner. Chilli crabs were probably better than most I've had in Singapore, but salted egg needs more sauce. <br/><br/>Plus they need fried buns to dip into the sauce. Would rate higher once these are fixed ;-) <br/><br/>Will be waiting team!

When you have a banquet with 25 dinners you need to actually bring enough food out. I don't care how "authentic " the Malaysian cuisine is, if the dinners are arguing over the duck because you get a piece each then it is not good enough.

This place changed so much food and service got worse. Meals are small quality degrades. Service are slow. Will never come back<br/><br/>When there with my whole family. Over a years ago food was good as it's so close to our house and we love Malaysian food. <br/><br/>Got so disappointed with there foods and not cheap at all

Heard that this restaurant is famous for crabs.  Went the first time for other dishes but not impressed.  But the crab from the next table looks very good. Went back 2 weeks later for the crab but was very disappointing.  We booked the $49 crab (700g) special for Monday only.  When arrived, we were  told the 700gm crab was not available and so we ordered the 1 kg crab instead for $73.  The crab meat omelette was only 60mm (2") diameter x 10mm thick for two people.  When the crab came out, it was impressive with the 2 big claws.  However, there was not much meat in the body (sort of shrunk from the shell).  It was more shocking when I cracked the claws, it was hollowed and only about 1/3 has meat (see photo).  We complained to the manager but was told that they have no control over the quality of the crab. It was cooked and served and there's not much they could do.  At the end, he offered to cut the crab to $60, but we were still very hungry and my appetite has gone after the argument.  We didn't even eat the dessert and left with anger and hungry stomachs.  The restaurant were very noisy in both visits.  The first time has a big table of 10 University students yelling and scared the sleeping baby on next table to cry.  The 2nd visit has a little girl from next table running and yelling throughout the dinner.  No waiter or waitress can be seen in the dinning area at all times and only appeared in the bar area.  Definitely will not go back.

Ordered chili crab 0.95kg, beef rendang and kangkung with belacan. The taste of the chili crab sauce was about 75% there, not bad for Melbourne. However the crab we had was watery, thin meat or "hollow" crab. As we only came for crab we were rather disappointed. Beef rendang was a little sweet for my taste, although the meat was really tender. The staffs were kind enough to offer a free omelette that came with the crab and a discount for the watery crab. Overall it was still an above average Malaysian meal. If the crab meat was firm, the experience would be worth raving about. Keep it up omah.

Our friend recommend us to try crabs in Omah's Malaysian restaurant. It was really delicious foods we had today! <br/><br/>We order 1 chilli crab, 1 salted egg crab, 1 coconut prawn, 1 belecan Kangkong & 1 Roti bread. I have to tell everyone, this is the best crabs we have in Melbourne. So tasty, very close what we have in Singapore chilli crab. The roti tastes so nice with chilli sauce. It is just wonderful. The staffs are nice and friendly, we all very happy with what they recommend the foods for us. We love Omah's. We will definitely come back again.<br/><br/>One small thing, when we left, the staff asked if we needed to take away the chilli sauce or not, we said why not. So sweet.

I have been to Omah's many times over the years and have always eaten well on previous visits. Sadly, things have changed and not for the better. <br/><br/>We ordered the $40 banquet which comprises 2 entrees and 3 mains plus rice and roti. After a long wait our first entree arrived - the duck san choi bow. It was was a measly serve; just barely a quarter of a limp lettuce leaf plus a couple of tablespoons of mince. Tasty enough but tiny. While we were eating the first entree, the main courses start arriving. We pointed out to the waitress that we still hasn't finished the entree nor received the second entree however this was ignored. The beef rendang was good but the roti that was meant to accompany it did not arrive until 45 mins later. As per other reviews, the roti tasted like it was store bought which is disappointing for a restaurant that has prided itself on serving authentic Malaysian cuisine. Omah's duck, which is one of the signature dishes, was inedible on this occasion. It was tough and tasteless. The missing entree arrived at the end of the meal and this was just as awful as the rest of the food. Even the drink that I ordered was disgusting. How a drink that contains orange juice and mineral water can taste salty is a mystery to me. Perhaps it was the unidentifiable green liquid floating on top that was allegedly the refreshing cucumber twist that might have been responsible, who knows? <br/><br/>Service was extremely poor. The restaurant was only half full and there seemed to be plenty of staff on the floor. Despite this, no dishes were cleared from our table for the duration of the meal. At least they were quick with getting the bill so we could get the hell out of there. <br/><br/>What a shocker. We won't be going back. <br/><br/>

This is my second time coming to this place this week because I purchased a groupon deal for four persons . We specially like their pork hock under the great groupon deal as well as their chilli crab and the unforgettable signature - SALTED EGG CRAB(highly recommended!) that I first tried at Omahs restaurant,so tasty and fulfilling!.<br/>Othet than that, the surrounding is cosy, clean and classy, it is a great place for you to chit chat and gathering with friends. Besides, the staffs made us feel welcome by providing us well timed service. Will definitely be dining here again!

This used to be my fave place for curry laksa. I would have it at least once a week. Alas, it is no more. The curry laksa is no longer authentic and tastes diluted and bland. Clearly the chef has left. <br/><br/>In a Malaysian restaurant, you need to have a Malaysian chef. The new chef doesn't know what curry laksa should taste like.. <br/><br/>The fit out and set up at Omah is great but I now have to drive to Monk and Me in Camberwell for laksa. That is now the best laksa in Boroondara.<br/>

It was my friend"s birthday so we went to Omah"s for mud crabs. We told them that we were having a birthday dinner so the staff even played several birthday songs for us . The restaurant"s interior design was cosy, clean and the service was as excellence as always . The girls were polite , friendly and attendant. The food was nice as well . We ordered crabs as in Melbourne as there are only a few restaurants which we could grab for fresh one and they are only Malaysian restaurant that offer different flavour of crabs so we ended up ordering salted egg crab and a chilli crab. The crab were fresh and enough for five of us to share. A good place to hang out for dinners. We will come back again .

Sigh...used to be one of me and my wife's favourite place to have Malaysian food. I especially love the duck curry noodle and some the Fried KT. The ambience is comfortable with a touch of authenticity. The services was and still is always good. I've been meaning to write a nice review but alas...all good things come to an end. The chef has left...and our last visit have simply made me regret not going there more often before this happen. <br/><br/>Dear new chef...the duck would be better roasted and not boiled in water then arranged in the curry. The texture and taste is terrible. The curry soup needs to have more sambal. Local Aussies love the authentic Malaysian taste which is bold and robust. They will appreciate the greater depth too. Bland and weak broth is not the Malaysian way. Fried KT is all about wok fire. A couple of pig lard would be awesome too. <br/><br/>Apology for sounding unappreciative and overly critical. But I love Omah...I like the ambience here, so comfy. and I like the waitress here that always smiles and she recognise me and my family every time we go there. But I can't go there now because my limited stomach space is not allowing me to waste it.

Told no nasi lemak when ordering.. Why not just tell me beforehand when giving the menu? Service really lacking.<br/><br/>And the hainanese chicken rice is just BLAND. Oily and tasteless chicken rice. The chicken itself is also tasteless, hard and felt defrosted. Only thing giving it taste was the chilli sauce.. Probably bought from a supermarket...<br/><br/>Should have just stayed home and eat my mom's chicken rice instead...

Came here for pork knuckle, satay, lobak and a few lunch special. Pork knuckle was delicious and crunchy, but the wat tan Hor and char kuey teow wasn't that authentic and wouldn't recommend. Apparently their crab is quite famous, might try other time.

Excellent Malaysian cuisine in Hawthorn - and probably one of the better joints serving Malaysian food in Melbourne. Do yourself a big favour and order at least one crab - they are finger licking good. Ambience is great - I love the seating near the window and the staff are friendly and fluent in both English and Mandarin (mostly). I also absolutely love the ikan bakar, which I am guessing by taste is a sort of assam/sambal belachan mix on fish with okra and tomatoes. Very, very delicious.

DO: The crabs. Any of them. Whether it be pepper, chilli or my favourite salted egg. <br/><br/>DON'T: Do anything else. Only come here for the crabs. Like KFC, why would you order anything else but the chicken haha. <br/><br/>TIP: Takes bookings so I highly recommend. Also, nice wide aisles so that it's pram friendly.
Wei-Chi Lee
Service was very lacking... waited over half an hour between each of the courses. The waiters were also quite disorganised and forgetful as well as being not very fluent in English. <br/><br/>The food is not worth the wait at all. Fried things are too oily. Stewed things are too dry. Roti feels and tastes like frozen store bought ones.
Artdkfka
Not bad, but not the best place either. I have visited a fair number of times. I normally visit here for lunch and choose something from their lunch menu. I personally found that food is generally salty here.

Five of us came to celebrate a family birthday. I had read reviews of poor service but usually do not worry as long as food is good, however on this occasion the poor service really spoiled the outing. The waitress was not very good from the beginning mixing up the cocktail order . Then the food arrived but not the rice. We had to ask for it twice even through the restaurant was not full and all the wait staff had to pass our table to place and collect orders. Surely they could see the food on our table and no one eating. Then we finished our food and were waiting the last dish - steamed fish. Finally we spoke to another waitress and she stated there was no record of our order. We asked how long it would take - 20 minutes. We asked would it not be cooked immediately, the response was it had to take its turn according to when it was ordered. We said it was ordered 1 hour ago, but this did not seem to make any sense to her or the fact that we had nothing left to eat and would just have to wait. So we ordered a dish that could be cooked faster but left to have dessert elsewhere. Once we complained  we were ignored other than for the delivery of the food.  The food itself was average, the duck egg prawns good but have had better at Ripples and Pacific Seafood BBQ House. The crab was fresh but at 700g smaller than the 1kg ordered and the sweet chilli sauce ordinary. This is not a cheap restaurant and service should be better particularly as it was not even full. Not surprised it is now on Groupon.

Tried this place after researching on Zomato. Nice ambience and good location, never had Malaysian food like this before but enjoyed something different. Would definitely recommend this to any Malaysian cuisine lovers to give it a try, worth it.

First time to Omah's with friends. Before we even started eating, we were disappointed. The purpose of reserving 2 mud crabs is so that we will get crabs to eat on the night. Unfortunately, when we got there, we were only offered one crab weighing 700grams...between 4 people. At the end, not only we didn't get our 2 crabs, the owner didn't make any effort in keeping offering us some discount or other food to make us stay. Just couldn't care less. Won't be going back.

Fantastic crustaceans enjoyed by 5 gals - eating with all 10 hands!<br/>Fragrant, fresh and delicious as we tried crab cooked several ways.<br/>Be sure to allow yourselves time to find car parking space if you want to get to your booking on time.

this is a family favourite of mine. especially since it is close to us, we regularly visit here. the chilli crab is to die for, so delicious. love all the noodles especially the mee goreng. butter chicken and red duck curry is also very yummy. i would like to see an increase in the portions of dishes though. prices might be little expensive but the restaurant is so clean and well designed and the employees are very patient and helpful. totally worth it :)

Came here for the Monday crab special.<br/>Quite happy with the chili crab and special, only downside is we asked if it was spicy stating that we couldn't eat spice at all and they said they could make it non spicy, however it was still spicy.<br/>Also they need mantao bread!!! Would come back.

Nice and clean restaurant, good service! The seafood, especially crab and prawn, of this restaurant are so fresh, and never let me down. The curry is not that strong like some india food, just the right amount to feel the taste of food itself.
Foodie
Good looking restaurant.  We decided to order the $35 set banquet.   The food was average and a little too oily for me.   My major criticism is the too fast service like being fast fed.  First of all we told two waiters that we didn't want all the dishes at once and needed a break in between but they just didn't understand.     We received the two entrees dishes but before we had even finished them we had the rice, roti and a chicken dish on the table, we had requested the calamari follow the entrees alone but it just wasn't understood.  On request the waiter then served us the calamari dish.    We had just finished the calamari and starting on the chicken when the next two dishes arrived, we had to ask them to take them away until we were ready.  Hence the time we got them again they were overcooked and the rice and balance of roti cold which was disappointing.  Okay if you are in a hurry.

Highly recommend this restaurant. The chili crab was amazing~~! Crab meat tasted so great, and I had noticed that the crab were alive and fresh at the back kitchen, furthermore, that one thing made it awesome was becuz its sauce,,,delicious! especially when you served with noodles.. I hadn't finished the sauce so I took it home. <br/>Lemon Chicken was also great, it tasted a little bit sweet but also mixed lemon flavor, which made me have strong appetite. It was a new dish. I hadn't found it on the menu, and the waitress recommended me that. <br/>Service was Ok, waitresses were beautiful and friendly, I think I will come back.😊
Maggiemeeee
Authentic Malaysian restaurant with a oriental ambience, <br/><br/>Coconut Prawn was unexpectedly good, creamy coconut cream with crispy deep fried prawns.<br/><br/>Sweet Chilli Crab was a MUST-ORDER, the sauce was just about the right spiciness and sweetness, the crab itself is fresh and meaty.<br/><br/>Peking Duck Wrap was alright, but the duck piece was a bit too thick for my liking and it was barbecue duck instead of roasted duck, which is a different from traditional peking duck.<br/><br/>However, the Laksa was disappointing, the broth tasted as if it was made from pre made laksa pack, noodles were overcooked as well.<br/> <br/>P.S. waitress were too busy chatting at the cashier, we have to walk to the cashier when we need their service 😂<br/><br/><br/>

We had dinner here on the weekend. Overall the restaurant was very new, nice and clean. The service was good, and restaurant atmosphere was nice. Most of the food was good. We ordered chilli mud crab and a few dishes, the chilli crab was very delicious! I really recommend this dish. However, a few dish was not very good! Such as the calamari salad was very salty, and the pandan sago with coconut milk was too hard to eat and too sweet and too creamy!! The ice lychee drink was very horrible, they need to learn how to make it before they served to customer, because it was too much water and tasteless. Anyhow, as for the Other dishes were good! Food price was expensive! However, if you'd like to try the fresh mud crab so I highly recommend this restaurant because the crab was very fresh!
Lizzy
The food was okay however the service was unacceptable. There was too much talking between the staff and they certainly were not tentative to their patrons. The restaurant is too bright, they need to dim the lights & up the service. Sadly I will not be returning in a hurry👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Gemma
Omar's is a fantastic restaurant. Their chilli mud crab is absolutely delicious, and it's lots of fun to get messy! Would definitely return.

Nice vegetarian curry lots of fresh veggies. The roti with peanut sauce was a bit expensive for $7 given the size. Still enjoyed the meal though.

Sept 2015<br/>Similar<br/><br/>March 2015<br/>It's pretty sh*t really!! had high expectations... one of the worse malaysians I've had. okok edible but pretty crap still. Ordered the Nasi lemak, the curry had no flavour and the rice was very wet and soggy. It was filling but not the usual standard that is expected from restaurants these days... IMHO YMMV
MyFoodBelly
K and I rarely have Malaysian cuisine, so when asked to pick a restaurant for a catch-up with a big group of friends, we decided to try out this local restaurant. Located just a few doors down from Axil Coffee Roasters, Omah’s boasts a big menu filled with a huge variety of traditional, and not-so-traditional, Malaysian food. It was hard to decide on just one dish (we were ordering individually) but the table ended up with a nice mix of different food.

Who knows how many times we've had this conversation - probably just as long as we've been pining for the damn things. From a young age, we've both learnt to appreciate this armoured crustacean. We were taught that the proper to enjoy crab was to use your hands and teeth - no crab cracking tools in our households. The joy of savagely cracking through shell with nothing but your teeth, to us, is one of the most satisfying feelings in the world.
Tiges
Omah's isn't your best Malaysian restaurant but it's pretty good and great for Hawthorn. In reality I only go here when they have their lunch menu as its good value and there is a decent range of dishes available. I wouldn't venture here for dinner when there are much better Malay options all over Melbourne.

In spirit of the Lunar New Year, this week's blog posts will be all about those chopstick licking Chinese meals that usually gets consumed during this festive period. A last minute decision brought us to Omah's whereby a seafood loaded dinner is a good excuse to usher in prosperity and happiness. Depending on the number of patrons in the restaurant, be prepared to wait for a bit after placing your order. On the bright side, this fancy Malaysian restaurant does have a little bar located close to the entrance so if you are in need of treats in the form of Asian inspired beverages, you know to go.
Perky
Prepare to pay a few dollars more (as expected due to the location). Found the found just to be standard Malaysian. Seafood laksa didn't have much 'seafood' compared to other laksa's around town.
Snowflower
Kong Pao Chicken - pretty average. Gado Gado - the peanut sauce was good, but we felt there were not enough tofu. The Assam fish head curry was probably the best of the 3 dishes that we ordered. A little lacking in the assam but everything else was good.
Grace
So glad Omah's was open on New Year's Day. Service was friendly and quick. Food was good with some twists on traditional Malaysian cuisine.

Beautiful ambience , good service and authentic good value Malaysian cuisine ! Had the mee goreng and chicken curry laksa, both dishes were spot on :) will be back again !
Lee Pownall
Terrific Malaysian food. The selection is great and the flavours beautiful. Nice interior. The prices are a little on the high side however it is really nice food.
MT
Absolutely awful. I ordered the buttered fried chicken = mistake. While the chicken itself was fine the sauce was almost cheesy and made me feel nauseous. Highly disappointed as Malaysian is my favourite cuisine. Even the peanut sauce was ruined! How is that even possible?! Perhaps if I'd tried the crab I'd have been happier..
SK
Nonya fish was very tasty, as was the peanut sauce on the Gado Gado, but remainder of our food was rather average and service was very patchy. Ordered drinks did not show up
Brock P
Eaten in a number of times for their great chill crab but first time takeaway. Seafood lakes was top class as we're all the dishes. Good authentic Malaysian.
David Poon
went past the shop many time, did not go in.finally try it about two years ago and never look back. the spicy noodle soup is so good and tasty and been order it every time there after, sping roll is so good you think there must be meat in it, but i know is vegan, my wife love the bean curd with the dark sauce , steve is very friendly all times,we told our vegan friend and they try it, all love it.
PiggyCritiques
Chilli crab was tasty.. Sweet and spicy tomato based gravy! Yum! Other than that, everything else was mediocre. <br/><br/>Don't order the roti - it was rock hard solid.<br/>Don't drink the tap water - strong metallic ancient tap tasting :(<br/><br/>Some background music would have upped the ambience. Service was nothing to write home about. Dishes were fairly overpriced.
Brillat_Savarin
Solid Malaysian food. Laksa soup is exceptionally good, had the water spinach as well which was very well balanced flavor-wise. The service was very welcoming, friendly and honest which was extremely appreciated and gave us a better experience as certain dishes were hinted as better than others. Curious to try the crab dishes in the near future. Good jobs crew!
Hello. Imnikki
Love coming here for the crabs. Found it to be quite authentic - comparable to those you can get back in Malaysia. Agree with one of the previous reviewer that they should have mantou for dipping in the chili crab sauce. The rest of the menu is worth trying too especially the ginger flower duck. Service can be hit and miss depending on how busy they are.

Been to Omah's twice now upon recommendations of friends. Best value Monday night crab night with an entree, choice of crab done in 5 different sauces and a dessert. Love the crab - yummy! For crab lovers must try!
Nithya Nagarajan
Authentic Malaysian food. I love the trendsetting ways of Melbourne's food industry but sometimes you just crave the kinda fresh, hot, yummy food that could be mistaken for something outta your momma's kitchen. It is exactly at these times that you should place an order with Omah's. You are welcome :)
Julian B Ho
The Nyonya sub-genre of Malaysian cuisine epitomises the culinary blend of Malay and Chinese culture blended with Indian influence. Not many restaurants do Nyonya food but Omah is one of them. And the crabs are pretty damn good too. Nestled in the heart of Hawthorn, this establishment is a good place to entertain, showcase Malaysian cuisine and above all enjoy good food. Clean, family-friendly, friendly service and also able to accommodate large groups. <br/><br/>My only gripe is they should add buns (mun tao) to go with the yummyliceous chili crab sauce. Such a waste to not have anything to soak up the gravy.

Used to like this place. Went there again last night (4/9/2015), food does not taste the same as before. Portion is smaller. Rice is a bit hard. Belacang kangkong is salty, etc. may be they have a new Chef now. Not sure will visit again.

Love the house special's chilli crabs!! And the flavoured coconut prawns! The decorations were typical Malaysia's old tea house style! It's a family friendly place, my son super love the junior sets!

The chill crab yummy! must try~ Love the food~ we have ordered the salt egg prawn, black pepper beef, and the tofu &vegi. Yummy. Will go there next time~

Omah's was once a regular lunch place because who can say no to $9.90 lunch specials? Every time I even think about eating out now, I second guess that decision because my nasi goreng was served to me cold and with a hand rolled cigarette in it. Yes a cigarette. It was soggy as well as it had been stirred right into the food. Disgusting and unacceptable. The waiter's apology went along the lines of "Umm... Sorry, the food was prepared too close to the cigarettes." How is that an acceptable apology? When something as disgusting as that happens, the chef or manager on duty should at least come out and not expect the wait staff to do their dirty work. Was the cigarette rolled right where the food was prepared? Did it fall out of a breast pocket? Was the rollie hanging out behind the cook's ear? Gross. Gross. Gross. Thanks for taking away the simple pleasure of grabbing lunch when I haven't brought food from home.
Snoopy
The chilli crab taste very authentic, enough spicy and sweetness. Also ordered other stir fried dishes. Like the fried kuey teow too. Also have lunch set menu.

The Salty Crab! I died and went to heaven. Laksa resurrected me. Unbelieveably good food! Please please please open an outlet in Auckland!!!

Have been here many times for their house special crabs for a while! First time for lunch, super like their Nasi Lemak especially the coconut rice!and the price is so cheap with such quality beef and coconut rice! <br/><br/><br/>Friends invited us to there for the so yummy crabs! Super love the slated egg crabs, chilli crab, and coconut prawns!!! Worthy to try! Will come back again!!

Love this place in my neighbourhood. The roast duck laksa is a must order dish and Omah's duck is so tender and juicy and full of flavour. Tried the mud crab lately. What a lovely dish. We tried the salty egg flavour, absolutely to die for. And the mix salad with peanut sauce, brought back my childhood food memory. I would strongly recommend anyone to give this a place a go and you won't regret.

Update July 2016: <br/>After loving this place for years, our last visit was not the best. The food lacked the big punch of flavor we used to love. The vegetable curry platter was very watery and bland. The mee goreng wasn't as rich either. Even the roti bread was lukewarm. We really hope that this place picks up it's game and goes back to it's old standard. We suspect a change of owners as the menu was reprinted as well...<br/><br/>June 8, 2015: <br/>Love love love. My friend and I come quite often to get our noodle fix. He claims it may be the best mee goreng outside of Malaysia (I know, big claim!) The crispy butter chicken is delicious but I ask for extra sauce since that's the best part. Curry platter great value as well. We haven't gone for the crab mondays, but we often see large families devouring the crabs. The prices are really reasonable to go with such a nice decor. We will keep coming back and recommend to people in the area looking for a nicer cheap eat.

Yuk <br/>Just not nice food <br/><br/>Quite like the set up and would love it if the food was good but it's just not <br/><br/>So many better options around hawthorn <br/><br/>Have tried take away and in house and both times didn't finish the meal<br/><br/>No thanks

Some of the best chilli crab in town here. Their beef is high quality, not the overtenderised MSG ridden slimy stuff traditional for many suburban asian restaurants. My only gripe is no pork dishes - replacing pork with chicken in lor bak is completely wrong and destroys the dish, and many other dishes aren't quite right if replaced with chicken. A very nice dining room and atmosphere lends well to work dinners and a great introduction for introducing guests to malaysian food in a relaxed setting not typical for many malaysian eateries. Well worth checking out.

Salted Egg Crab. Very flavoursome and crab was cooked very well, crispy!<br/><br/><br/>-----16 May, 2015-----<br/><br/>Chilli Crab. Some roti bread goes well with the sauce.

Waitress with no common sense.. Was dining with 3 other friends tonight at Omah. We were enjoying the famous chilli crabs with rice. As per the menu the rice is charged at $2.50 PER PERSON. When the bill came we were charged 6x$2.50 for rice. We queried the waitress and she explained that it's because we ordered an extra serving of rice. But the menu clearly stated $2.50 PER PERSON which is implying that the maximum charge for rice is $2.50 per person. If that is the case then the menu is very misleading. The most infuriating thing is when the waitress said it is common sense that the charge of $2.50 is per person per serve. This is not about money but the attitude of the waitress who implied that we do not have common sense. This incident has spoilt our night. Because of the bad service, I will definitely not be coming back and I will not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends.

Very disappointed meal. Very disappointed mud crab meal ever, overcook and put too much oil for cooking vegetables. Not worth for money.

Missing the old taste. I used to love going here for special lunch date to have the chilli crab. The other dishes are just ok. But the crabs are my fave! Anway went here last month and was so dissapointed. The chilli crab tasted far from the original....

Crab is the one to try here.. Chili crab is so delicious.

The fried kuay teow was average and didn't sit well in the stomach probably due to the quality of the oil used.

Overall, a fantastically good value meal using this voucher. The service was definitely lacking and very slow, but I didn’t mind too much as I was coming here mainly for the food and the company anyway. Unfortunately even though I walked out of this restaurant holding my stomach and almost writhing in pain from eating too much, none of the dishes on the Groupon menu actually stood out to me which is a little sad. However, if it wasn’t for this deal it probably wouldn’t have led us to experiencing their Chilli Crab, which is definitely something I’m looking forward to coming back for.

The mango pudding sago dessert was probably the best part of the meal for me; it was good quality, as was the vanilla ice-cream that sat atop it.

It’s great when you try a new restaurant and like it. And go back again. And again. And again.  For me, Omah’s has been one of those restaurants.  A friend initially recommended it having gone to the one in Port Melbourne but of course with there being an Omah’s in Hawthorn, I’ve only tried there. Recently we went on Monday as they have the Monday night crab special – $45 for an entree (crab omelette), a crab and a dessert.  This is quite a bargain – especially since recently they have changed their pricing structure to the crabs being priced per kg rather than per crab.  However, of course, the crab served on Monday nights is smaller than usual! The omelette has definitely shrunk since the last time I went! Before and after shots:     The crab can be served in seven different ways – the only one I haven’t tried is the butter one (is this new?) but oh well – my favourites are definitely the salted egg and the chilli crab.  It’s a shame seafood can be so finicky. The first time I tried

They specialise in mud crab and on Monday they have mud crab night where you can enjoy a three course crab feast for $45.00. They also have a junior menu of five dishes ($8.90) so you can bring the kids along as well.

So after having been to the Port Melbourne ex-sister restaurant (now known as Opah's as they have since cut ties), I thought I'd try the Hawthorn chain for my Birthday. My family and I were not disappointed as the food and quality was just as good (if not better).

I have blogged about Omah's before but I just had to post a revisit post about Monday Mud Crab Night which was basically half price crab night.

Note: this restaurant does not offer doggie bags, so if you’re going to order something like the crab, make sure you can finish it!

Located on Burwood road towards the Glenferrie road corner, this is a cute locate Malaysian place that offers chilli crab. Yes, Chilli crab! If you have ever been to Singapore and had chilli crab and came back to Australia craving the same thing but failed to find it... this is really good news. We had a coupon which offered us a 5 course and added an chilli crab on the side. As an entree we started with soft shell crab, duck sang choy bao and roti with peanut sauce. The soft shell crab was generous with seasoning, almost too generous in my opinion but every one else on the table didn't seem to mind. The curry powder on the chilli crab was new to me, I didn't mind it but I still think I prefer Japanese styled fried soft shell crab. The duck sang choy bao has an abundance of sauce in it. The duck was tender and cooked just right but I found it too salty and too much sauce to eat together. The roti with peanut sauce was nothing special, it wasn't fresh made roti. Mains we got buttered ch

...had the Crab Omelette ($8.50)! What is it about shredded crab and egg ... lovers destined to be together in a smoky hot wok. Surely it can't be because they both exist within shells that have to be cracked open to release the sweetness inside. If I could I would be whipping them up at least once a week.

Average overall, crab disappointing. Brought my parents here to try the crab because my mum loves crab and I'd read a lot of good reviews about Omah's. We had the chilli crab, the nyonya fish (barramundi) and the duck curry. Unfortunately chilli crab, which cost $89, was disappointing. The crab was not good quality, it was a scrawny "watery" crab with very little meat inside the shell. In a good quality crab, the meat should be firm and full. We will not be ordering crab here again, especially as there are other restaurants that do it much better. The nyonya fish however was quite good and tasted very fresh; this was the best dish. The duck curry was ok, nothing special, apparently pre-cooked roast duck slices with red curry sauce poured over, as the meat had not really absorbed the curry flavours. We'd booked online through Yumtable, meaning a free main up to $20 value, but this was not reflected on the bill when it arrived and we had to send the bill back to be amended.

Terrible service. Went for dinner today. Food was nice especially the crab but the service! Unbelievable! It was as though they simply did not care whether we ate or not. They plonked a bowl of crab curry on the table, no plates to eat and we waited for ten minutes at least for service. The whole evening it was the same story. We just could not believe the terrible service. Evening was spoilt in spite of the decent food. Never going there again.

Mmmmm Chilli Crab. Been wanting to try Omah's after discovering they specialise in Mud Crab - wow wish we hadn't waited so long. We shared the vegetarian curry puffs and lamb spring rolls which were both good, but the Chill Mud Crab was amazing. Had around 1.15 kilo crab and it was cooked to perfection, large claws were so sweet and juicy and the thick chilli sauce had just the right amount of kick - we moped up the sauce with soft flaky roti bread which finished a perfect meal. Now discovered it will be a regular when craving crab which is often!

Good gravy. Food here is rather expensive (compared to China town) and the serving size is small. But they really know how to make very delicious gravy for their dishes. For example I don't eat crab, but the chilli gravy that comes with it is yummy all by itself.<br/><br/>This is the kind of place to bring visitors to, especially if they like the house speciality, chilli crab.

It's my 3rd visits to Omahs and had a lovely time again. Both my favorite dishes slated egg crab and coconut prawns were the highlights of the dinner. Must not pass the real coconut prawns made with real coconut water,so much enjoyable flavor! Belacan veggies also deserve a must try! And nice nice coconut rice! Definitely will be back regularly!

Good environment, good taste, sweet service. 4 of us came to Omah's last night, we ordered famous food in its restaurant, 1 chilli crab, 1 backpepper crab and coconut prawn, it is really wonderful. This was also a big birthday celebration party last night, even they were very busy, I have to say, the employees were very friendly and nice and their service were very good. And the environment is clean, a nice Malaysian restaurant. One more thing, the manager told us that they do care about quality foods and food safety. They try the best to provide good quality food for their customers, and they do clean the kitchen everyday after finishing the work to ensure food safety. Honestly, it was a great experience last night.

Great experience. I used a Groupon and regretted not getting a few more. Their beef rendang and chicken curry are both tender and full of homemade flavours. Even the finishing touch -mango pudding with ice cream- is done well.

Fabulous lunch. This place has a great lunch menu for $10 for Mon-Fri. We come nearly every week for our cheap fix of South East Asian food. Best $10!

Lunch Menu. Great for lunch sit down or takeaway. Reasonably priced and good food.

Ordered take away from here and it was actually not edible... We returned the food and got our money back and will never eat there again. Rending was dry and the calamari was soggy and chewy.

Customer Service?? I don't think so.. When tasting a Yarra Valley wine, everyone (6 of us) at the table commented on the fact it seemed like it was "on the turn". We spoke to the waiter, querying the quality. She brought another bottle which was opened for purchase 'by the glass' and we tasted a sample of this, finding it to be just as unpleasant. We requested that we have a bottle of another wine as a replacement and became involved in a discussion around nothing being wrong with the chosen wine and that they all tasted the same, even though we suggested that maybe the whole box was off. The waiter then said she would go and talk to someone about the issue, and another returned asking to take our order. When we explained what had happened, we were told that we would have to pay for this wine as we had chosen it! So, we paid for it and left - no apologies. <br/>Never a smile from anyone from the moment we entered the restaurant, either. Friendly? Customer service??

Meh. You would expect that when you are dining in and paying premium prices for food and have some left over, you would not be charged 50c each for a takeaway container, let alone have to put the food into the container yourself at the table... very odd business decision - we eat out a lot and have never experienced this. Hope it was worth the dollar they got for our two containers, because after that, after having to listen to Christmas songs as background music (?! In JUNE!) and having to return a dish that was served to us cold and floating in oil, there was absolutely no way we were leaving a tip.<br/>Very average dining experience.

Pretty good food. I've been once to their Port Melbourne sister restaurant but never went back even though the food was tasty. I found the menu overpriced at that time. I frequented Strais of Melacca on Chapel Street Prahran frequently and felt Omahs was of similar quality but at 50% more. On this occasion I bought through Groupon vouchers and this was really great value. It was 5 courses for $39 and while the appetisers were tiny, the mains and dessert to share made up for it. My only gripe is that the drink option was limited to draught beer, wine and tea which for my non alcohol drinking mates tasted terrible. I know right why am I friends with people who don't drink alcohol! None the less, I'll be happy to go back to Omah's if they providing better value than their regular menu. Ie mains should be under $15. Staff were friendly albeit a little show but food delivery was quick.

Groupon deal. Overall, our group on deal was a fair experience. What threw us off was how terribly bad the butter chicken was. For some reason, when we munched it, it felt like it has been reheated through the microwave. The interior of the chicken pieces were hard and chalky despite its exterior being flavoursome. After a few bites, my partner and i did not feel well and had to stop eating for a while. Albeit the desserts were good and the soft shell crab was to die for, i would think twice before dropping by again.

A great feed. Excellent crab

A Most Pleasant Meal. We had a meal here with a Groupon voucher. We made a reservation at rather short notice on Sunday and had a most pleasant and tasty meal. The voucher was excellent value and the service was friendly and efficient ant the food was very good indeed. It was a banquet of five courses with a choice in most parts of the meal. We will certainly come back here.

Food at Omah's Malaysian restaurant. We used a groupon coupon for the banquet and were very pleasantly surprised. Good tasty food, pleasant service with a smile and bustling resturant. Will definitely go back for more.

Enjoyable night out every time. We come here regularly after church, and it never disappoints. The staff are friendly and work really hard to make sure we all receive the right orders, food comes out roughly at the same time etc. It's not an easy feat when there's around 20 dining in our group! <br/><br/>I love the coconut rice here; other highlights are the coconut prawns, and the red duck curry with lychee. Can border on pricey, but the special crab nights and summer drinks menu are both worth checking out more closely.
