Review Cafe Matto - Heidelberg

Came here with my mum and loved it. Lovely man with the glasses out front welcomed us in with a beaming smile and friendly nature. We ordered the antipasto for starters and I ordered the rib eye steak cooked medium for my main. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender. The mashed potato was smooth, creamy and well seasoned, the veggies were steamed but not overdone and still had a good bite to them, and the mushroom sauce was so tasty. I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve had since coming out of lockdown. Excellent food and service. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends and family.

Got a BLT for $13 and was expecting to get ripped off like most cafe’s but this place provided awesome value! (i ate the other half of the BLT) Lots of bacon, came with chips, and the gentlemen serving me was a champ. great guy

Rude owner. Coffee was very average and below Melbourne standards. It took them 25 minutes for their waitresses to come and take my order… then rude Owner wants me to leave table as they only allow 20 minutes… I understand how business works but they need to learn to be more polite with customers … you said next time 20 minutes only… NO, there will be no next time…. There’s no shortage of great cafes … perhaps There’s shortage of bad cafes like you …

Came in with my client who has special needs and requires some time to figure out what he wants (take away), I told the women at the front beforehand that I'm a support worker and my client will take some time to figure out what he wants, and once we decide I'll let her know. After a couple minutes she was visibly getting agitated and forgot about what I told her initially, and because we felt pressured, I ordered a coffee type my client didn't want which in turn frustrated my client and started to raise his voice because he was on edge- what does the women do? Tells us to hurry up and make up our minds because she has other people to serve, which is fair enough, but I told her that I'll let her know when we're ready, I didn't tell her to wait for us to decide and then serve the other people there. Anyway, then the male barista told us to "take it outside" because my client was obviously not happy, insinuating that we were about to get into a physical altercation, which was humiliating. Maybe have a big sign on your front window stating "those with mental health issues and Autism are not welcome", because that's exactly how you treated my client. Absolutely disgusting and discriminatory behaviour and lack of compassion and patience.

Fantastic food and service. Friends from Sydney loved it as well. The owners are fabulous and make everyone feel special. Just a great vibe. ❤

It’s OK inside though and has a surprisingly spacious outdoor seating area that was lovely to sit in today in the warm autumn sunshine. The cafe draws extra marks for providing ice with the table water. There’s barely been a cafe lately that’s not provided warm water, a pet irritation of mine. My long black here was just ok. Middling at best really. My Greek salad though was quite tasty. It looked basic but it tasted good. The good quality feta was particularly appreciated. Service was lovely throughout here from multiple busy and attentive young servers. Not a bad cafe at all. I’d happily return at any time.

my go to for cheap but still good cafe meals, especially for breakfast/brunch. not many places still offer all the classics at such a good price. lunch and dinner can be a little hit or miss but nothing to complain about. staff are also always friendly!

Very rude staff ...poor quality food ...when we left I saw the waiter with the bald head smoking out the front on the footpath and drop his cigarette butt...not want anyone wants to see .....

Tried Cafe Matto for breakfast recently. Reasonably priced. French toast was nice but could’ve used more berries. However I ordered bacon and eggs and the bacon was very over cooked and tough and the toast was very dry. Also “fresh squeezed OJ” was not fresh and very sour. Will try somewhere else next time.

Love this place, the seafood risotto is THE BEST and very generous on the seafood! Also I love the choc mint ripple cake, it’s delicious!<br/>Staff are always friendly<br/>Love the new decor, a huge improvement!

Been back a few times now for lunch. <br/>Great value in terms of the prices and sizes of meals! <br/>Friendly staff.<br/>Only improvement I could offer is the chips here are like McDonalds chips, would prefer something with a bit more substance. :)

Friendly staff greet you when you first walk in to this pleasant cafe.<br/>The coffees were really good and reasonably priced. I tried my first almond latte. It's not for me, so I had a regular straight after, much better for me.

The coffee here is always consistently good. <br/>We have found the staff and owners to be absolutely wonderful to speak to and the food is always excellent as well.

Cafe matto at Heidelberg. A nice small cafe serving good coffee. So smooth and biter taste. Personally I don’t like sour coffee. This cafe is definitely a must go place in Heidelberg area.

This place was a good surprise. Was expecting average cafe food but it turned out really good. We ordered the Mexicana pizza and lamb cutlets with risotto. Absolutely loved the lamb; tender, juicy and cooked to perfection with a really delicious risotto. A decent drinks menu too.

Disgusting cheap sloppy food and extremely rude staff. The chicken parma I ordered was one of the worst I have ever eaten. The parma crumb was mushy and soft, the salad it came with was unwashed and many pieces of lettuce had visible bits of dirt on them. The ham on the parma was like spam...just gross. <br/><br/>Don't both even trying to talk to the manager (old man with the greying hair) as he is aggressive, arrogant and lacks any communication skills whatsoever - he will raise his voice and yell at you. <br/><br/>This "cafe" is also too cheap to invest in aircon, so be prepared to sweat. <br/><br/>I have been to just about every cafe on Burgundy street and this one is the worst by far. <br/><br/>Don't waste your money at this run-down corner-cutting cafe! <br/><br/>Much better off going to The Alleyway next door - service and food MUCH better!

Coffee is below average. My Margherita pizza was just melted cheese on base...Horrendous! Just who is cooking? MY advice buy DR OETKER frozen pizza from Coles or Woolies when they have on special. It will be a hit. Never again. Only positive was presentable and polite waitress.

Friendly staff, good customer service. <br/>We ordered the chicken Caesar salad and the vegetarian focaccia (gluten free bread instead). <br/>Food was average. Nothing to rave about nothing to complain about. <br/>The sandwich was missing flavour maybe adding a mayo or extra cheese; there was cheese but it was hardly found.

Fantastic place! Came here for dinner with family and all of us enjoyed our meals. I had the lamb cutlets and the lamb was cooked perfectly, the bed of risotto was also delicious. Decent sized meals and the staff were friendly and helpful. Will be back for sure :)

They used to poke fun at their name... it is easy to misread it as MAHO based on the signage. <br/>Matti has been a favourite of mine for years, even hosting a birthday dinner many moons ago. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all good here. It’s a bit dated, but I find the early 2000’s decor a calming reminder that sometimes things don’t need to change to stay awesome.

Pleasantly surprised! Attended a 21st bday dinner with the family. We were able to book for 12 and BYO wine/champagne/cake. The meals came out fast considering we had such a large group. I enjoyed my grilled fish, veggies and chips. My cousin got the main calamari which was quite small for a main.

Waited forever for breakfast and other people who came later than us got served before us<br/>Won’t go back again. Very disappointing!!<br/>Kept asking the waitresses only to be told it’s on it’s a way every time.

We certainly liked the coffee, which was strong and aromatic. <br/><br/>The place was very clean and well located.<br/><br/>For the main dishes, we didn't like both of them. The grilled lamb was chewy and dry, prawns were tasteless, and the salmon was flavourless.<br/><br/>We may catch them on the off day. We might visit them again one day.

Had a pleasant meal here with my family for dinner. I had the eye fillet steak which was cooked a little more than the medium-rare that I requested but it was still tasty with a nice charcoal flavour. My family enjoyed their meals also. The restaurant and toilets were very clean which is a big tick in my books!

This cafe is located opposite of Leo‘s supermarket at central area. Coffee was nice and strong, all staff were kind, pleasant customer service and variety of yummy cakes. Delicious Mint cake was not so sweet as looks. Lemon meringue tart was very rich and sweet which was good to share pieces with family for afternoon tea.

Have eaten a lot in Heidelberg and never been here before, was very surprised on how nice the food was and a good menu and the service was even better.

If you are looking for a basic cafe with descent coffee in this area you cant go wrong with matto.<br/>They have all the staples and everything is always of good quality.

Came into Cafe Matto on my lunch break from work at Mitre 10 around the corner and was able to get some fast, efficient and friendly service during my 30 minute gap.<br/><br/>I got a Mediterranean vegetable wrap in which they were easily able to substitute the aioli for hummus to conform to my vegan diet. They did this free of charge and the result was delicious. The wrap was hot, tasty and very large with a side of tasty french fries. It was perhaps mildly soggy with everything that was stuffed in there, but the wrap didn't leak or break apart at all. My father's chicken burger pleased him, and we both enjoyed our Coffees.<br/><br/>Cafe Matto is a friendly local place with strong service and a beautiful aesthetic. It has tasty vegan-friendly options, and everything comes at a very good price. Will definitely be going back there again soon.

Incredibly friendly and genuine waiting staff, including the man I presume to be manager. Food is delicious and portions are fantastic- the price for the meal always astonishes me as it is very fair. Refreshing as many other restaurants charge ridiculous prices. I would recommend the classic 250gm steak or chicken parmigiana! Pasta and pizza range is really varied and tasty too. Have been going there regularly for a year now and recommend it to all my friends. Staff are friendly and make an effort to remember you it seems. It is certainly a dated decor but with how busy Matto always is and quickly service and food is always provided, who cares!

Come here every weekend. Staff are amazing as well as the managers. Always smiling and interacting with customers. Food is amazing have not been disappointed yet. Great prices on everything cheap and affordable

We had the carbonara fettuccine and the seafood pizza, I love they used a big prawn on pizza instead of the small one . Lovely fettuccine. Very friendly service, good food . I was going to order the desert but end up too full . Love it :)

Enjoy the food. The cafe can be a little loud when its busy, however this is due to the smaller size, nowhere for the sound to travel. Food arrives promptly no matter how busy it is. Parking can be a nightmare but htat's Heidelberg for you - if you know the area you know where to go. Friendly staff. Decent cafe for a nice meal. The house special pasta is my favourite. The burger is also delicious! My husband loves veggie burgers and he says that this one is one of the best he has had!

There's nothing fancy about this place, just simple, well made food, friendly service and reasonable prices. We'll definitely be back again soon.

Pleasant and excellent fare<br/>After reading the Zomato reviews with diametrically opposing opinions of this suburban Italian cafe, my family approach our first dinner here with some trepidation. However, we found the place clean and cosy, the waiting staff friendly and helpful. We had an Entertaiment Book voucher which they happily honored. The Chargrilled 300G Fillet steak was expertly grilled and melt in the mouth, side veggies were fresh and tasty. The Children's menu was at a high standard. Most surprisingly, the white-haired owner? was on his best behavior and politely said thank you and good night as we left. Yes, we will be back! Keep up the standard!

The lady in front of me paying for her coffee happened to mention (quite nicely I thought) that her coffee hadnt arrived. Rather than apologising  the owner made her wait then belittled her in the most uncalled for way. Looking at the reviews below it looks like the owner is is a common theme. Food and serving staff are pretty good, just dont let the owner get involved.

Nothing special, spotted 3 dirty tables waiting to be cleaned when we arrived. Place needs a makeover as the interior is tired and worn. Staff were nice and friendly but the food was average. Had the Matto platter - lamb was dry, calamari was doughy, partner had steak which was nothing special

Went in for lunch with my daughter. The food was not very appealing. It seemed the nachos were just tgrown together. The food was bland, and not worth the money we paid. 😕

If you are looking for a great value dining experience, come here. The porterhouse and the chicken Santorini, were full of flavour.<br/>BYO as well plus very friendly and efficient staff!<br/>The room decor is adequate and toilets well cleaned.<br/>A pleasant venue for a quick meal.

Very basic and inconsistent. Service needs to be improved. Pizzas are ok but some of the other food served can be very inconsistent. Been there a few times for a quick snack but most times we have been disappointed

Local café that I will only come to if it's after about 5 o'clock because the other nearby places are closed. The coffee is average and the food is okay. Generally not bad but nothing to write home about. I have found on numerous occasions that one of the main guys/owner/manager (not sure) can be quite rude. Once i walked in alone at a quiet time and ordered at the counter instead of waiting to order from the table. He took my order but then gave me a really stern "talking to" about ordering at the table. Bit uncalled for - i wasn't being rude or pushy, i just already knew what i wanted and genuinely thought it would be quicker for them. As i said, okay place but i will only go as a last resort.

Have walked past this cafe numerous times and noticed that it's generally quite busy. Consequently, on a sunny Friday, I popped in to grab some brunch. Inside the cafe is spacious, well lit and well designed. The decor and atmosphere are both pleasant. I've had coffee several times here and its is generally pretty. The breakfast menu is served for most of the day (a big tick in my books) and i found that it was priced more reasonably than other cafes along the street. I ordered the prosciutto eggs and really enjoyed it. I think the food could have benefited from being a touch warmer but that didn't alter my experience. Service was attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back. A friendly recommendation for management - add a smashed avocado dish to your breakfast menu.

Positive: Being a olmc student, Cafe Matto is where is the girls get there coffee from in the morning, the service is one of a kind and they always have time for a chat. I've been with friends for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner all which was amazing, the service from the waitresses was always polite and patient when ordering. The vibe within the cafe is friendly and warm which is always filled with customers no matter what time of day you walk past which is a sign of good quality food and service. You'd never wait more than 20 minute for a meal. Would recommend to all of the Heidelberg community as well as extended communities.

Horrifying Restaurant Experience - A Real NO GO!<br/><br/>I went to Cafe Matto yesterday with my disabled sister who has a brain injury and  breast cancer. We had been to Cafe Matto before. It was OK. We were seated near the open door and it was hot. I politely asked the waitress to close it to improve the air conditioning and she was happy to do so. <br/><br/>Out of nowhere the manager appeared and charged up to the door and flung it open pointedly. He flounced past us making sneering and sarcastic remarks. We had no idea what he was so upset about and his staff stood rooted to the spot aghast! <br/><br/>When I tried to speak to him about it he flew into a rage, abusing us loudly in front of all the customers. We decided to leave and I cancelled our order with the waitress and he continued his abuse as we left. <br/><br/>Worse was to come. As I was trying to help my sister across the road he ran out after us yelling abuse at two 60-ish women with walking sticks for the vicious "crime" of asking to have the door closed!!  By now he resorted to vile and derisive comments about my personal appearance. My sister was totally traumatised and shaken. <br/><br/>I have never seen a performance like this. You might well go there - but for heaven' sake don't ask for anything or make a complaint - it might send him right over the edge!! This business deserves to go under.

Good portion of food for what it's worth. Spaced out tables that create a calm atmosphere with friendly staff.<br/><br/>Lighting and subtle artwork was a good highlight.

Have been here a couple of times and it's turned into a little bit of a date spot for my girlfriend and I. Had the Flathead tails and chips which was perfect except the Fries were a little under seasoned. Raquell had the Atlantic Salmon which she enjoyed although the salmon was a little dry and the vegetables undercooked. Food came out quickly, as did the drinks, which resulted in a high quality dining experience. Will definitely be back soon.

Looove this creamy advocado fettuccine! The ingredients are so fresh especially the chicken breast is really yummlicious. Will come back again.

We both had the Matto mixed platter. Excellent. Four perfectly cooked meats (lamb, chicken, calamari, prawns) came with a generous serve of garden salad. A little pricy at $35 but nonetheless recommended.

Good espresso and tasty banana bread. Staples that any coffee should get right and this place does the job admirably. The setting is a bit sterile for my taste (give me bohemian and Scandinavian styling over 1990s chic any time) but the service was business like – what I'd expect in a busy cafe.

I just want to say every day I walk past café matto it over flowing  with     customers which is a really amazing thing to happen to a small business.I go there with my dad at least once a week always amazing, peter treats his customers like family and with respect.food is of super high quality and at a reasonable price and service is outstanding.I will recommend this café to anyone who is in the area.remember one thing people when it comes to reading reviews,a majority of people who have had an amazing experience  wont  write   a review but the minority who haven't like a salad dressing or where they have been seat when the place is full or something small like that will.your always going to see more negative responses then positive. so don't be misled!

Saw a very disturbing thing from the waiter who was leaving the cafe.<br/>Drives a motor bike that he parks out the front. He dropped his cigarette butt outside another shop which is disgusting <br/>When asked to please not do that he told the lady to f.... I have been here probably at least 10 times, the food is great and it at a reasonable price. I have got the wrong thing brought out to me twice though, which is annoying when you're with your boyfriend and he eats twice as fast as you. Im not sure if it was the kitchens fault or the waiter, but it would be great for the waiter to just quickly repeat your order just for clarification.

Terrible food and even worse service. Was overlooked in line when waiting as owners friend was there, and hen owner swore at me because he was taking too long. Places like this shouldn't be in business. AVOID

I want to like this place as it's so convenient to everything, (thank god there are a few great cafes nearby) the food is ok and the coffee isn't bad but I find the staff arrogant. Guys, that's sooooo boring and 90's, do yourselves a favour, get some "happy to serve" Hipster types behind the counter and the coffee machine and all the Locals you've put off might just return and spend their cash, just saying.

Reserved. I went to Cafe Matto for Coffee and some lunch ..... After an hour they told us the table was reserved ...... Which was bullshiit as they should have told us at the beginning and i would have gone somewhere else ...... Sitting there having a leisurely Lunch and coffee on a sunday you dont expect to forced out of the Restaurant so I am passing the word around dont go there ........

I wasn’t able to finish the final layer of salad because there was too much – it was basically swimming in dressing. Despite this, the salad was still enjoyable because the lamb was nicely cooked and seasoned well. There were a few pieces that were slightly over-done, but thankfully they were still tender.

Great customer service and food. We received fantastic customer service when we had brunch there last Sat. The gentleman at the counter, and waitress gave us exceptional service from start to end. Even helped to watch over our bicycles parked outside. Recommend the seafood pizza highly. Generous seafood as toppings, will be going back for sure.

Been coming here for years. I live not too far away from Matto and it has been my 'go to' cafe for about 2 years now when I can't be bothered travelling into other suburbs nearer the city. This is both because of the fact that I like the food and coffee, but also because there are not any other places around Heidelberg that offer the same service or price (Most are a little more pricey/pretentious) The staff are usually quite friendly and welcoming, even during busy periods. I enjoy all the food (And I have tried the entire breakfast menu at this stage) I have had there, only nit picking points such as too much dressing on the lamb salad, or at times the lamb can be over cooked but overall the food is served quickly, they consist of very large portions and do leave you feeling satisfied 90% of the time. I can understand why some people are not always happy with the food / service, there are a few areas in which the staff could work on. However overall it is a nice local place to have coffee and brunch

Good food and really good service. We came here for lunch and were very happy with the food - good portions and the coffee is also nice. The service was really good and we used an entertainment voucher and it was honoured (it was lunch during the week).

Avoid. Disgraceful, rude service from owner.. Don't bother with this place when there are far better options on the same street, much more deserving of your business. Owner is a rude pig and is reluctant to honour coupons from the Entertainment book, and makes out that you are a cheapskate for trying to use it.<br/>As for his snide remarks as we left about going somewhere cheaper, the owner will be pleased to know we went elsewhere and spent more money than we would have at his cafe, and we didn't use any coupons.

I'm a regular at Matto and adore the food and service. Never disappointed by their focaccias and the generous serve of fries as well.<br/>Great vibe, love coming here!

LIKE IT. We dine at Cafe Matto up to three times a week and always have the best time there the food is great and the staff are friendly and wonderful the owners are great and the atmosphere is welcoming and always happy. Will continue to go there until I die !!!! Love it !!!

Good Night Out. Dined there last night and the service was very good and friendly, the food was very excellent and well presented. We used our Entertainment vouchers without any problems. The only comment was that with 4 people at the table it was a bit crowded. Would recommend it to other people.

Great!. A great consistent italian cafe/restaurant with great service. I love that you can see how clean the kitchen is as well. The staff do an awesome job! The fact that it's busy at any given time of day speaks for itself!

Very Average Pastas, Pizza's ok. Owner is not friendly. The salmon, avocado & capsicum wood fired pizza was tasty but the rest was below average, especially for the taste. My fettuccine marinara came in a watery grey liquid and a left over (used) wedge of lemon! There used to be an old man there whom used to work at a 5-star hotel and he made the best marinara. Unfortunately only the young asian chefs were in this evening. <br/><br/>The young wait staff are pleasant but I agree with the other reviews, the mature aged owner is arrogant. We will not be returning.

This place is a joke!. The food was ok but the manager/owner was arrogant and rude. This would have been a cafeI would have told people to visit, now I urge you not to visit unless you want to leave the place disappointed!<br/><br/>The service is terrible!

Would not recommend to my worst enemy!!!. Used to go there all the time and it was fine. The service is now horrible and so is their food!! They don't know how to cook a basic steak to your liking. The owner responds with "maybe you should eat your steak rare!" So apparently, I am unaware of how I enjoy my steak (because I asked for a medium porterhouse and it was cooked/burnt to a crisp). Then the owner decided to have an argument with me infront of everyone, while inspecting my half-eaten steak. Save your money and time and go elsewhere.

Everytime me and my partner come to this cafe there are 8-9 tables 'reserved' and we always end up sitting in a horrible nasty back corner. When we enter these tables are 'reserved' and when we leave 1 1/2 hours later they are still empty with a 'reserved' sign! what kind of terrible customer service is this! the first time we let it slide but now that its happened 3 time we won't be coming back to sit in back corner again! they need to learn how to properly organise table turnover. also some of the staff are very very rude!

Service been bad for a while. Just ordered egg bacon cheese sandwich, came without egg. They replaced it with an undercooked egg and yoke poured everywhere. Can only assume it was the incompetent chef taking the mick because I returned my order. Given them too many chances. Won't go there again.

It's good without being fantastic. Went on a quiet morning and had poached eggs and bacon with toast and coffee. Food was fine and about average for the area in terms of price. Coffee was above average. Service was good and friendly. Solid and worth it without being super fantastic.

Breakfast was fine the man at the register was very rude....used an entertainment docket which he was not happy about and he did not hide the fact...would not recommend

Great little cafe. Have been to lunch at this cafe many times, always good food and friendly staff and always busy. Love the chicken risotto, the burgers and leek & potatoe soup.

Good food and good coffee. I wouldn't say they serve something super special but if you feel like going out for good cafe food, go to this place.<br/>Nice staff too

Liked the food !. In looking for something half good for me, I have gone with the lamb salad (over burger variations or other fried foods). Its quite a generous serve and fairly tasty. <br/><br/>Within the Burgundy Street cluster, Mattos appear to have the best kitchen over Scintillas, Café Burgundy (yipes) and Rocket.<br/><br/>Coffee is OK, but for mine, its well behind Scintillas.

Pleasant atmosphere and felt cosy despite the polished concrete floor. Large serves, though my omelette was quite under seasoned. Staff were prompt with service and had that lovely bustling morning cafe feel.

The worst cafe on burgundy street. Went on Mother's Day to try my luck for a table and wasn't really expecting was told they were reserved and I said what about inside and the horrible waiter said that maybe if I spoke English I'd understand he insulted me in front of customers and also swore in front of my three year old and other children at the cafe! This isn't the first time I've had problems with that waiter he is the bald one. Terrible man, horrible service and down right disgusting to customers.

Service is always friendly, great value for money.

Refused to honour voucher. This restaurant lost us as regular customers when it refused to honour a legitiimate Entertainment Guide voucher. Even after the staff at EG contacted them, they refused to refund us. For the sake of the $12 meal we were entitled to for nothing, they have lost custom from us to the value of probably 20 times that amount. Very shortsighted......

DELICIOUS!. I love Cafe Matto, friendly staff, great coffee and delicious food.<br/>I had Santorini Chicken and it's always divine.. I keep coming back to have this main in particular. Great Job at being consistent.

Great value. Eaten here 7-8 times, breakfast, lunch and takeaway dinner. Always good, friendly service, always busy. Best to park at the rear of premises.

Below Par Service / Food Good. We visited Cafe Matto on Saturday, unfortunately their service really let them down. Was a real stuggle to get anyones attention and we probably would have ordered and spent more money given the opportunity.<br/><br/>On the flip side we were all very happy with our meals, great breakfast menu to choose from and the plates were piled high when they eventually arrived.<br/><br/>Would give the overall experience a 7/10 although sort out your service and that would jump to a 9.

Enjoyable. Lunch was very good, both the Atlantic Salmon and the Schnapper were generous serves. Service was very good, would recommend.
