Review Tarin Thai - Heidelberg

Monica Harri
Deliciousness overloaded. Excellent food and wonderful ambience. Very friendly staff. The food was served very quick. Also,$40 for a 3 course meal for 2 people fine-dine is a bargain. Cannot recommend enough.Thank you team Tarin Thai for a wonderful dinner.

Our favourite Thai food around the area. Their duck curry and green curry are amazing, my partner loves their cashew stir-fry dish, all their stir-fry dishes are so fresh and yummy! Very reasonable price with generous amount of foods. Service is always good and friendly! Thank you !!!

This was a good find for local Thai food! All dishes ordered tasted quiet authentic and staff were friendly and polite too. Only downside was having to wait awhile for my order but it's because they get super busy especially on a Friday night! I've definitely found my fave Thai place in Heidelberg and look forward to coming back for more when in the area!

Conviently located but parking can be hard due to busy area. Staff are very friendly, welcoming and quick service. Food is resonably priced and very tasty. The restaurant isn't a big so make a booking would be recommend especially weekends. It is one of good thai restaurants.

Absolutely delicious food! The tom yum soup is soo good I crave it all the time. I'm sad I have to wait til 5pm some days to order haha. Pad graprao is so good too. Love it.

We love the food here! We stopped ordering from anywhere else. P.S My husband said he was disappointed there were no shirts to go with his thai. lol.

We had a great experience dining in. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was tasty. Entrees about $8 and mains $15-25. The thai beer Chang is recommended for $7. About $60 for two people (2 mains, 1 entree, 2 beers). Nice atmosphere and great views from the windows overlooking Burgundy St. Seems popular for takeaway. Whoever thought the chicken was dry, it's cut thinly and swimming in sauce so don't be put off it is great. Plus there's options for beef, pork, lamb or duck as well. The business seems to be family run, it's clean and conveniently across the road from the shopping centre. There doesn't seem to be any other thai restaurant in the area. They have eftpos. No wheelchair access. They make a point in the menu that they cater to all dietary requirements and can probably cater to vegans if you ask. The entrees are hand made, I can vouch because I saw them making them when I went to pay. The kitchen seems small and I forgot to mention that the food came out very quickly amd we were asked beforehand if we wanted the entrees first and then what order dishes next. Obviously the beers came out first.

I visited Tarin Thai many years ago & found the food very tasty. This time I was not impressed. The spring rolls lacked flavour & my mains had too many onions for my liking. The dish when I had finished was still swimming with the sauce. A sauce is to enhance flavour & not drown the ingredients. The service was attentive & only too happy to assist. I dont feel I will revisit this place.

delicious food! I have eaten there twice and loved it both times

My husband and I have just moved to Heidelberg and saw this place got great reviews, so decided to give it a go. We were both disappointed with our meals. My husband’s seafood dish was really watery and lacked flavour. My pad see ew, which is always a favourite at other restaurants, was pretty bland, too. Such a shame as is it’s great to have a cheap local Thai place nearby for takeaway.
Quicksmart
Above average Thai, delicious food fresh and tasty. Loved it, will be back!
Eatenbymae
Good food better service. We used b1g1f with zomato gold and got two meals for the price of one. Bargain! We got the pad Thai and pad see ew. The pad Thai was too salty for my liking but the flavours were pretty good. The pad see ew was the better dish and we really enjoyed the char as well as the flavours.
KLfoodfinds
Generous serving sizes and packed full of flavour.

We are very lucky to not have to travel too far for good thai noodles

Restaurant is quiet place for a weekday dinner

My go to thai restaurant, I order from this restaurant almost three times a month and I never get sick of it, my usual is the Chicken Pad Thai and the quality and the quantity they give me is more than enough. The staff there are so nice and welcoming!!
Maude Farrugia
This is a lovely little classic Thai joint that has been satisfying my pregnant green curry cravings for the last few months! I can only vouch for the curries, but they are fresh, simple and loaded with ingredients. The service is fantastic and the staff are particularly lovely when dining with children.

I thought this place was unfortunately overrated, not sure why It scores so well,I didn’t think the food was great, sorry!
We ordered a simple chicken satay skewer for entree and it was pale, runny and tasteless they lost me after that!

Really great service, lovely family that runs this restaurant. The entrees were good but the mains were truly special. Highly recommend getting coconut rice. Classy understated decor and delicious food! 🤸

Went here for dinner on Friday night as we were in the area and the reviews were quite positive on Zomato.

The restaurant was relatively quiet, which was somewhat unusual for 7pm on a Friday evening; the wife and I were found a table promptly and ordered a roti entree, Pad Thai and Pad See Ew mains.

The service: Prompt and efficient, although we were a little concerned by what appeared to be a child running meals, clearing tables, cleaning the floor etc.....
The prices: Reasonable and not out of place for the cuisine or the area.
The food: Echoing what a previous reviewer has written - bland; the roti was tasty and fresh, as was the accompanying satay dipping sauce, but the mains were unremarkable; the beef in the Pad Thai was dry, almost stale (as if it had been reheated) and flavourless, while my wife could eventually not bring herself to finishing the Pad See Ew. As a final comment, the beer I ordered was not particularly cold (I ended up leaving it unfinished at the end of the meal).

Given there is another Thai restaurant up on Bell Street with much better offerings at similar prices, we will likely not return to Tarin in future.

Have been here a number of times and the food is always excellent, a good range of items on the menu at an affordable price. Would definitely recommend
Decided to try it it as takeaway and while the staff were friendly the food was very below par. All dishes were quite dry bland and a bit tasteless. The place was empty even though it was middle of dinner time so maybe that's an indication.
MelbfoodCritic
Nice modern Asian ambiance. Staff very friendly & attentive. However when it's comes to food it lacking of deep rich Thai flavours. Pad Thai was sweet but lacking distinct flavours or ingredients like dried shrimp or fresh lime flavours. We order red curry but it was taste more tick coconut milk but not much meat inside or the flavours blandish. Cashew stir fry was purely used sauces but not fresh lime, or other ingredients that gives distinctively rich Thai flavours. Measuring quality & taste of food, service, ambiance against price gives an overall score of 3.2*

Tarin Thai is nestled in the suburbs of Heidelberg and delivers deliciously tasty authentic Thai food! We know how much melbournians love Thai food and this is one place to add to your foodies must try list.

Featured here is the warm and tasteful red duck curry with lychees and is best served with coconut rice! And the must have traditional pad thai which was one of our favourites! Go get your Thai on Melbourne - it's seriously Thai-licious! 😋

Delicious Thai for a small local restaurant.
Friendly staff are always willing to personalise your order if any special requests are needed.
Roti bread and peanut sauce are a staple must have with any dish you decide to order!

Friendly staff, good services and sensational Thai foods.Roti with dipping satay sauce was really beautiful, green curry with chicken was perfect and coconut rice was omg absolutely gorgeous.

After a long wait, visited this place. Is a medium size restaurant on main street with nice ambience.
We ordered roti chicken roll, gang masamman with jasmine rice and my favourite chicken pad thai.
Starter came within time and was good. The only problem with it was that the roll was not holding properly and opening up. Taste wise was good and the satay sauce to die for. The pad thai was amazing and just perfect and so was the gang masamman.
Overall we had a really good time and were satisfied with the food. Will definitely go back.

Felt like having thai in the area and here seemed to be the highest rated...
Phone ordered the following

- Roti
- Red Curry
- Pad Kee Mao
- Pad See Ew
- Thai fried rice

The person that took the order spoke english well and friendly.

15mins later we drove to pick up the order and saw they were unwrapping the roti from a package..
price was reasonably cheap.

Red curry was ok, nothing special.
Roti was really dry and didn't enjoy it at all

The rest of the food was just average.
not something I would go back for.
Allieson
I found most of the dishes we ordered sweet. It's alright, but definitely not the best Thai food I've had. They also lack many authentic Thai dishes and that was a disappointment given its a Thai restaurant.

The service was amazing though. The waiter was very polite and helpful.
Svm
Stir fries are always yum although a tad saucy. If you want it really hot you have to stress it a few times and ask for their fresh cut chilli. My regular take away spot that satisfies my Thai food cravings.

One thing that stands out at Tarin Thai in Bundoora is the wonderful ambience. The servers were friendly and the food was great. Try out the crispy prawn and Pad thai. One of the best I have had in the eastern suburbs. Place was bustling with people, now thats a good hint of a resturant with good food.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Quite good thai food. Accommodating for our group of 15, around $25 per person which is fair. Wide selection on the menu but not spicy enough, needing a little more chilli.
J
I will preface this with I'm not very versed in Thai cuisine. So I'm not sure of how authentic this place is...

However, I love the food here.

We always order the coconut rice which is nice. You can taste the coconut but it's not overwhelming.

We've had the Roti bread with sauce which is alright.
The spring rolls are little and could use a tad bit more flavor but the sauce it comes with is nice.

We've had a variety of beef, pork and chicken dishes. Each one has been nice.

Staff is friendly and we are usually seated quickly.

👍 Friendly Welcoming Staff
👌 Authenticity of food - lacking the true Thai flavours
🙂WOULD I GO BACK - YES

Dinner tonight 3 generations. Grandmar visiting from interstate, mother & myself. Needed a meeting in the middle location between houses which was Heidelberg. Quick Zomato search led me to Tarin Thai.

Ice cold water as soon as we arrived that was topped up drying dinner 👏. Ordered 3 dishes to share:

Green chicken curry. 7/10 fresh chicken, flavour was average, lacked authentic taste.

Pad Thai. 6.5/10. Again flavour was lacklustre and bit too saucy. Really fresh bean shoots on top which were big and crunchy.

Chicken Larb. 7/10. Tasty, probably best of the 3.

I love chilli and was grateful the kitchen could provide a side bowl for me to add BUT the chill is were not fresh. Probably frozen as they were soggy. They were just the standard small red chillies - Birdseye? When I have Thai I look forward to crunchy, fresh, hot, green Thai chilies.

Overall great suburban restaurant. Friendly staff and it was pretty busy for mid week dinner.
Sabrina Ip
Not very authentic Thai cuisine.
1) Curry chicken with rice.
Thin sauce with tasteless chicken breast pieces.
2) Pad Thai Noodles with prawns.

Noodles are too much... and it's the original noodles should be used.
Too much tomato sauce added. Just like eating spaghetti with tomato pasta sauce.
3) Thai omelette
This is the best among 3 dishes. Onions and lettuce are filled generously inside the omelette. And the omelette is well cooked to give some crispy layer outside.

$50 for 2. A bit pricey comparing to CBD. But still a good choice along Burgundy St. during the weekend.
Coffee Cup
Lovely Thai and really well priced. $50 for two people. I had the Penang curry, sauce was thin but flavour fabulous! Service is prompt and friendly. Have been here before and always enjoyed.
Clairebear41
Best thai food ever!! Been going here for years. Fresh food and so delicious!! One of my fave restaurants. The Roti bread and peanut sauce is amazing. All dishes are delicious.
Bowlie83
Best Thai in the area! All the curries are absolutely perfect, the Pad See Ew I reccomend aswell. I have tried many other thai places within 15 mins and am yet to find one that is as good as here.
Ben Adams
Tarin thai. The food is apauling dont bother wasting your money here. The worst thai i have etver had.
Colipot85
Very disappointed in the meals. The Tom yum had hardly anything in it, and the panang curry was very milky very bland flavor. I wont be eating here again
Don't Get Out Much
Saturday night out with my wife.
3 kids. Don't get out a whole lot
Sorry I came back here. Service was like I was there but not paying
Food was very bland. Previously was a go to restaurant that I told everyone to try.
Luke
Gone down hill.. I've been going to this restaurant for year and have always loved it. Recently moved back to area and went back to be very disappointed in how bland the food has become to find out its under new management.
Laurawest223
Never Again. This has been our favourite restaurant for the past 10 years, but now that it's under new management, it has sadly gone down hill in the worse possible way. The food is now ordinary and the staff are so rude! Esp the new manager behind the counter. Never again will we go here.
Hide And Seek
The total glass frontage offers views of bustling Burgundy Street too. Traditional Thai artwork hangs on the walls, and the menu – made from light-coloured bark and embellished with metal decorations of Thai elephants – takes you back to Chiang Mai. Perfect for couples or intimate groups, Tarin offers all your classic Thai dishes and some variations on your favourite curries. It satisfies the fussiest diners and offers a large vegetarian menu, and you’ll even be sure to find something delicious for the kids.
FYI!! for those who asked the question "what went wrong" or "what changed". Here is the answer - Original authentic Tarin Thai is now Thai Station @ 75 Station St Fairfield VIC
Katherine Elise
The food is just ok. I had the red curry chicken. I'm sure they used red curry paste from a jar. I wouldn't go back.
Spino
What happened!!!. This was our favorite thai restaurant. now the food has gone down hill and the service is no longer the same! did they change chef or owners?
Tess_barclay
The best. Best thai I have had in Melbourne. love the food, love some of the staff. its quick its yum and reason prices.
the only thing is when its busy, the place gets really noisy!! sometimes I can't hear across the table. it can be off putting but I love the food too much not to go
Kim Tee
Just finished my take away meal... There were some highlights - the coconut rice & the spice in the green curry- and some low points.... Terrible entree made of soggy prawns, terrible chewy not at all fresh roti and peanut slush as a side and overall there are much better thai restaurants in the area. 6/10... But only just!
Sally
Rude rude rude!!!!!!! Do not waste your money at this place. Been going here over 10 years but NEVER again.
Melonsago
Consistently good. Great tasty Thai food and I'm always surprised at how quickly the food is ready after we order, so if you're hungry and don't want to wait 30 minutes for a bite, this is the place to go. The food is always hot and keeps its heat throughout the meal. This has become one of our regular haunts and the owner is always friendly and comes over to say hello.

Some of my favourite dishes would be the Green Chicken Curry, Red Duck Curry, the thick fried noodles with egg, and the Thai styled fried rice is fantastic too.
Bonnie
Changed for the worse. It used to be great with friendly staff. Now all the staff have changed and the attitude is nothing compared to before. Food was not served at once and there are a long wait between and the waitress tried to clear the table before we even finished. The Pak Kee Mao used to be my favourite and now it's too oily and the noodles is way too hard. I couldn't even finish. I will not be returning there again.
Harry
Service with a smile Love it been going there since it open never had a problem always a 10/10

Babe. Fantastic experience!! Better look but same quality, well done Tarin Thai.

What went wrong ?. Iam a regular to this fine restaurant , great service and great thai food however over the past 3 months on 4 visits its value has obviously diminished .... the food is less and the taste I have always gone back to has GONE ..
I cant seems to see why as the same owners appear to be there with the same front of house waiters ... what has happened ???
Natasha
Johannes
Cheap ingredients overpriced menu sub standard food. Heidelberg has far far better than this sorry excuse for thai. Never going back
Kavondj
It once was great. Tarin Thai used to be our one and only Thai restaurant. The thought of going to one of the many other local Thai places felt like cheating. While still very tasty, unfortunately the prices have gone up but the value has gone down. $45 most recently for takeaway which left us still hungry, including $15 for a red curry which was in reality a tub of sauce with 4 very small pieces of chicken will have us trying somewhere new. It was wonderful while it lasted....

Fantastic restaurant, good atmosphere, staff were friendly and food was great!! We all really enjoyed our meals and the servings were huge. Well worth the money. Will be back for sure
Apostolos4242
Best Thai. Great food, great price & friendly staff. Always busy on any night of the week. Highly recommend this place.
Debra Moroney
Yummy Thai. I love love love this restaurant !! the food is consistently of high quality and taste. Well done Tarin Thai
Robert-snacks-mchugh
Nice thai!!. Came in having read recent reviews and called ahead in anticipation of it being packed. Getting there at around seven Tarin was relatively empty. That said within 45 minutes it was full. Guess people were just coming in for the late dinner!

Tarin Thai is a lovely little place. The food was delicious; I definitely recommend the spring rolls for an entree, and even more pleasing was just how quickly the food came. Everything was "better-than-good" for asians restaurant; the food was out quickly, we experienced none of the occasional coldness or lack of attentiveness I seem to get from wait staff, not to mention the food was great.

Serving sizes are not huge for the price; One main per person will definitely need rice and entrees if you want to end up really filled up. But the price does reflect the quality and hell, you'd pay just as much for standard italian/pub fair, and I'd have this over a parma 6 days a week! Saturday is parma day.

Always good...yes, a little pricey..but you get what you pay for.. Hands down our favourite Thai restaurant for take away. We have eaten in a few times too, but usually really early so its not too crowded & noisy. Very friendly staff and always so welcoming - even if its for the take away!
Marc Ferron
Delish. Some of the nicest Thai food we have had. A bit on the expensive side...for Thai food... but who cares when the food and service is wonderful. Thanks Tarin Thai.
My Restaurant Rules
Another great Thai Restaurant. The service is good and the food is great. What more can I say ?? Certainlly pleased with the staff's attentiveness and the taste. It's only a small restarant but worth the visit.
Reenie
As always, food was fantastic. Green curry was great. Only one thing, I asked for extra hot and I think they took the mickey out of it and put sooooo much chilli in the curry, I had to put most of the chilli aside. All in all, a fantastic meal!
MyWisdomTeethHurt
9/10 - Best Thai Food. The food served at Tarin Thai is absolutely delicious!!! Tasted so good and well portioned. All meals ordered came out quickly and were very flavorsome. The service was great, even though the restaurant was packed and take-away orders were non-stop. The restaurant can get a bit loud and echo, but the food makes it all worth it. I highly recommend this restaurant for quality Thai food, worth the travel no matter where you live. This is now one of my favorite Thai restaurants!

Food: 10/10
Service: 10/10
Ambience: 8/10
Price: 8/10

Fantastic!. After lots of searching for a good Thai restaurant close to home, we finally stumbled across Tarin Thai and i'm so glad we did - it was terrific!

We got takeaway and had the coconut prawns, chicken satay skewers, chicken pad thai, beef masamun curry, pad talay, coconut rice and roti - everything was really well cooked, nice and light and fresh.

Totally delicious, will definitely be going back!

Yum. Great food, staff are friendly and always greeted with a smile. be sure to book a table as they are always busy

Food was excellent! Superb presentation, ingredients and taste. Food may have taken a little longer than usual but well worth the wait.

The food served at Tarin Thai is just delicious. Reallt enjoy their Thai currys. The staff are very friendly and provide excellent service. People from all parts of Melbourne specially come to dine at Tarin Thai.

A Heidelberg institution. Tarin Thai is simply delicious. I've been getting take out here for years (coconut rice, thai fish cakes, one curry depending on my mood, and one stir fry). I am a pretty fussy eater and I have yet to have a bad dish here. Everything is spot-on scrumptious.
Foodoo
A bit too squashy but it's worth it. I had the vegetable musman and it's the best I've ever had. Coconut rice is beautiful.

Love Tarin Thai. Family dinners, first dates, waltz in with trackies for take away - this place is like a home away from home. Love the snuggled up restaurant, super fast/friendly service and the divine food. Chicken curries with coconut rice every time. 10/10
Food Glorious Food
We ate here due to the good ratings. We had two dishes. Duck curry and pad Thai. Pad Thai was pretty good, good texture with nuts and bean sprouts, tangy flavor with lime and lemon and a hint of chilli. Duck was $26 but you get a lot of pieces, they were tender and thick sauce. Make sure you get rice.
Rebecca Pountney
Tasty Thai!. Highly recommend the food at Tarin Thai - it's always really fresh and super tasty! The restaurant can be a bit noisy and crowded at times so we often get takeaway, but it's difficult to fault the food - love it.
Melbourne Foodie
Back again and again... we love it!!. So much better than the recently opened Payom Thai in Ivanhoe. (Who we were hoping would prove stiff competition). We just cant go past the extremely authentic flavours.

Its such a shame that the place is so small and the head Waitress (owner?) is so stressed that she constantly has a scowl across her face! Her staff are pretty rushed (although always pleasant) as they turn over tables quite quickly. So don't expect a leisurely stay.

If it wasn't for the lack of space and quick quick atmosphere I think we would eat there even more often than we do. In retrospect, we have eaten there over 40 times since moving to the area so they are doing quite well out of us!
Juniperjules
By far one of the best Thai food places in the Northern suburbs. Have been eating here for years now and is probably THE best of all the thai restaurants in the northern suburbs- perhaps in all of Melbourne infact.

thai food is one of my favourites, so ive eaten in plenty of different places and Tarin Thai still stands out as the best and my favourite. the food is ALWAYS fantastic.

im a fussy eater and one of the things that always stands out for me is that the meat they use is of a very high standard. the chicken in their dishes especially is always lovely white meat, not horrible stringy dark or fatty meat that you find is used in lots of places.

i think the prices are good- no complaints there. im always happy with the quality of the food so the price is worth it for me.

only thing to note is that the restaurant itself is fairly smallish- and on busy nights it can be excruciatingly noisy... must be all the windows or tiles or something, because its so loud that not only myself but other family members and friends have commented that it was so loud that they couldnt hear people on the other side of their table..for that reason i only ever eat in on a quieter week day night, and only buy takeaway on weekends.

staff at Tarin thai are lovely, good service and with a smile too. highly recommend this place.

Great food still going strong. Our typical Friday night takeaway!

9 years and still my 9 years and still my favorite. Tarin Thai was introduced me in 2002 by a friend who luckily enough lived around the corner from their Burgundy Street Restaurant.
The entrance and restaurant itself is very authentic Thai with red and gold place mats lining the tables and beautiful wait staff always offering to assist. Their dishes are served in beautiful ceramic pots with the most amazing rustic gold cutlery. If it was not for the view of Burgundy street you would feel as though you were in Thailand.

So in 2011, 9 years on I am still reviewing this restaurant as one of my all time favorite Thai restaurants in Melbourne, I have dragged many friends through the door who now also return on a regular basis.
You can catch me there on a Sunday night getting my fix of Mas-sa-Man Beef.

xx
Jenjen
Thumbs Up!. Thought the food and service was great but a bit pricey for what it is. I suppose i've been spoilt living near the best/cheapest Thai in Melbourne and expecting a main to only cost $12
Emga
Repeat visits to this restaurant. Takeaway service very efficient. Best thai we have had on this side of town. Friendly, patient staff.
Eb
Most beautiful curries and always lovely service, never had a bad meal here!
Gone_skiing
Great flavours & always busy. Great flavours and something on the menu for everyone. Love their soups and masaman curries. Always busy so need to book in advance. Because its always busy is it generally really noisy so not suitable for a quiet couples dinner out. Very small & tables are jammed pack in so no room for prams, highchairs etc. But the food outways the negitives by far.

Yum!. We LOVE IT, we eat here all the time... you're in and out in a split second (thanks to a friendly but strict lady maitre d) however, having eaten throughout Thailand it is authentic and true to all the flavours and colours of our travel experience. A must if you're in the area. Do it, you wont be disappointed!
PurringGirl
Lovely. I grew up in the area and used to love eating at Tarin Thai. Great service and delicious cheap food... very much recommended!

Consistently delicious and inexpensive. Green curry vegetable is my favourite $13 and pad thai excellent $13. Nice to eat in as long as you're not by the door. A good one for takeaway.
