Review Sir Henry Barkly Hotel - Heidelberg

Tony Bellis
Stumbled in for a quick bite, ended up with the "small bites" special, which was anything but small, with a side of kipflers. All this washed down with a blizzardly cold pale ale. A great place for a a very tasty and we'll prepared meal. Would recommend đź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

Great local pub. They have a sports bar, restaurant, outdoor area and pokies if you are into that. Plenty of beers on tap and food is on point. A good alternative to the Old E.
Thomas Lim
A nice local pub. Good selection of beers on tap. Fantastic chips, the crunch in the chips, Gahd dayum so good mayne. Would definitely order them again when I come back. Pretty good vibes as well, would be keen to try their actual food but the beers are great
Host
Scotch fillet was not bad, asked for medium rare but of coarse comes out medium.

Bistro review...Perfectly fine for a family lunch/ dinner. Could do with a kids play area out the back perhaps. The menu needs updating, it's been the same for years now, and could do with some seasonal inclusions at least. But it's reasonably priced and offers a decent selection. Nothing fancy but it doesn't need to be.

Had a great reasonably priced menu and thoroughly enjoyed the tapes. The bar staff and waitress staff were friendly and attentive. The ambience was terrific and the pub was far better than nearby pubs in the area.
Alan Jones
Great food, comfortable seating and the staff are the absolute BEST, friendly and knowledgeable and willing to go above and beyond the service, one of the most enjoyable part of our family evening was watching the young waiter balancing our birthday cake and walking so slowly to avoid any of the candles going out, we were all holding out breath. Thank you🤗

The bar area has a good vibe and setup for watching footy since the renovation and the bar parma was good value with a smokey flavour. To get to 5 stars they need to get some more adventurous beers on tap. Very mainstream selection - I understand it's a CUB pub, but I would have loved a hazy IPA of some kind and there's limited risk in buying a single keg of a Balter and/or Pirate Life limited release and throwing it on a tap...some punters like myself will enjoy the variety!

in absolute WOW with the food at Barkly’s hotel! i was so impressed with the food my friends and i received, it was so beautifully presented, tasty and generous portions! <br/><br/>i had the crispy salmon and boy it really was crispy! the salmon was cooked so beautifully paired with a beautiful nicoise salad (green beans, egg, olives, roasted capsicum, potatoes, pickled onions and balsamic aioli) <br/><br/>i also had a nutella cocktail and it was the most delicious drink EVER!<br/><br/>i would definitely come back, it isn’t your typical pub/hotel... it is really classy with amazing food, atmosphere and staff :)

Not your ordinary pub grub! You would think that they serve just your average pub food but you might be getting something different here.<br/><br/>Walked into a pub that has a nice decor and ambience with an amazing range on the menu. There is a nice outdoor area with a terrace. We were surprised by the amazing variety on the menu. We opted to try their tapas sharing plates as well as salads. <br/><br/>The staff were attentive and very friendly and they even accommodated when we wanted to change our chips for salads. Really enjoyed their salads and grilled salmon was really good. The salmon was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin on top. <br/><br/>There is an amazing range of beverages available and the nutella martini was good. Had their coffee and it was served with a cookie which was nice. <br/><br/>Definitely not your ordinary pub food here.

This place really suprised me! <br/>I couldn’t believe how fresh and delicious the food was!<br/><br/>I loved the grilled fish and chicken satay sticks. <br/>The sticky pork BAOS were also delicious and the bun was super soft! <br/><br/>They have nice terrace seating out the back.<br/><br/>The staff were very friendly and attentive.<br/><br/>I would definitely return!

If you know anything about food don’t eat here. Had Calamari- clearly frozen from a packet rubbery and awful and partner had chicken Parma- insulting to call or Napoli sauce, when in fact it’s tinned tomatoes and paste absolutely awful. Whole meal cost 60 bucks, wouldn’t have been worth 20. Never again.

First time coming here & the bar is very spacious. I ordered the chicken Parma & we had saganaki & arancini balls to share. The food came out quite fast. My favourite was the saganaki. We got a decent amount of saganaki & it was really thick. The arancini balls were delicious as well. I really liked the bacon sauce they had with them. The chicken Parma was ok. It wasn’t the best I’ve had but I didn’t really like the chips. For me they were a little too oily. Overall it was really good. Food was good, service was good & the prices were really good. Could get 3 side dishes for $22.

Been there 3 times, mainly to grab some drinks after long working day, I like the ambiance and Friday night live band, very relaxing atmosphere. My favorite spot is by the window, you can see outside and hear the band playing. For the food, we had chicken tacos - average, spicy barbecue wings - cream cheese dip is good but shouldn’t pair with these wings, maybe with chips will do better, and calamari - loved it!

A great place to hang out for a relaxed meal anytime of the day. Bistro style food, hearty and delicious. Great drinks on tap and also perfect for parties and events.

Wines are a bit on the pricey side; the three diners having chicken kiev said they were ok, as did the steak diner. However the gummy shark was more rubbery than gummy and tasteless. The chips, salad and tartare sauce were quite nice. Not as good as the Barkly used to be.
Susan
Called in here with the family, all of us having varying degrees of hunger.  My son had the parma, which he said was as good as anywhere else, but the rest of us only had light snacks.  I had the crispy chicken spring rolls which were extremely tasty.  We sat "outside" which was fully enclosed and had heating, so it was comfortable, and had the added benefit that almost everyone else stayed "inside" so we had a lovely quiet area to ourselves.
Melanie
Have been here twice, food is ordinary. The menu has a great range and overall is a nice place to go for a drink and some small bites. The strawberry daiquiri is amazing! Three of us ordered steak ranging from medium to well and looked great when arriving at the table however all were verging on blue in the middle. None of us finished which was a shame. Potatoes slightly raw and hard, cold. Nice purée

I met up with a group of old friends for drinks and a meal. We had a really enjoyable evening. The atmosphere was great, service was excellent and my meal, the lamb ragout with pappadelle pasta, was delicious. Looking forward to our next catch up

Came here for dinner with family and friends for a birthday lunch. <br/>Friendly service and had a delicious chicken parma, the perfect pub meal!<br/>Drinks were reasonably priced and enjoyed the Aperol spritz. <br/>Would recommend.
Tom
My wife had the gnocchi with lamb ragu and I had the grilled salmon. The gnocchi was in what seemed to be tomato paste and the lamb ragu was chucks of tough fatty inedible lamb. “Wouldn’t feed this to a dog”<br/>The salmon had a pool of water under it.<br/>The place was freezing and hence we couldn’t wait for someone to tell them how bad it was. Probably the worst meal we have had in years.
Sherree Banh
Disappointing. <br/>The entrees were ok but the mains were not enjoyable at all. I ordered Atlantic salmon with mushroom risotto and my partner ordered pork sausages and mash. <br/>The salmon was extremely over-cooked and dry. The risotto was not even risotto - it was all mushed up and gluggy. <br/>Ambiance was good and so was the service. Shame about the food. <br/>We're locals so we really hope the food quality improves.

Had heard mixed reviews but decided to try Barclay's for Friday night dinner. Food was nice, staff very friendly but the evening was ruined by the noise level in the dining room. Conversation between our group of 8 was impossible. They even had a young guy playing the guitar and singing but no one could hear him.
Jess
I came to Barklys last night with some friends for the first time since the renovations, looking for a delicious meal that was still reasonably priced. And they definitely did not disappoint. The Garlic and Rosemary Lamb Rump was absolutely delicious and the White Chocolate and Passionfruit Martini was to die for! The staff were super friendly and the bistro area and bar is beautiful. I got talking with the staff and they mentioned they hold trivia on a Wednesday night at 7:30pm and I can't wait to get the girls together to have crack at it!
Love_food101
Absolute beautiful venue.<br/>Spent the evening there on a Friday night, it was such a lovely environment to be in with the live music and the delicious food! Staff was always friendly and made extra effort to make sure my friends and i enjoyed our visit. Was my first time back in a while and the renovations look awesome!<br/>Will definitely be going back there very soon.
Mathew Lincoln
My partner and I visit this venue very often but it also doubles up as a nice spot for my mates and I to head for a drink, it's the perfect local hotel with great staff and service which makes us feel right at home. Food is always delicious and well.. photo of these espresso martinis speak for themselves. Highly recommend 5/5 tomatoes 🍅

Barklys hotel is a newly renovated pub in the heart of Heidelberg. The managment and staff are always very welcoming and encourage people to come down to this establishment. <br/>They now run fox sports in their 3 big screen TVs which draws a crowd over the weekend. Not to mention the amazing live singing Friday and Saturday nights! My favourite is the weekly drink specials selection!!<br/>The food is beautiful and value for money. <br/>I encourage all to go down and check this pub out! We have never had an issue there, An abolsute favourite id say.

The 3 of us went out to lunch and had a Fantastic Lunch I would recommend The Barkly's Hotel to every one friendly service nice cold beer and the line was clear and nice to drink not soapy or flat so get on down Thanks Guys fantastic Venue

Don't go here if value for money is what you're after because you won't find it here. Live music there was the nicest part of my visit. The food was average for the premium price it costs. Also, I HATE that when I walk past this place there is always a group of people smoking which gets right in my face. Have a beer garden out the back away from the street or something? Unless of course your aim is to deter people from entering, if this is the case you're right on target. Bnw

Pretty standard kind of pub meals. Except they charge an absolute premium. I've tried a few different meals, nothing stood out as amazing and the demographic that frequents the smokers area is a pretty big deterrent for me to visit again. Not keen on getting a whiff a smoke every time I walked in, out or past this place.

I ate here before the renovation was done and I vowed never to come back as the food was a disappointment to me. I re-visited a second time after the renovation because family had organised dinner here. I was sceptical as expected from my first visit. I was pleasantly surprised when my food came out. It too had a makeover. It looked fresh and modern just the renovation. I began to think a new chef was responsible and the old chef had left. Last night I dropped in for dinner and as it was labour day long weekend it was quiet. I ordered a steak sandwich and my partner got fish n chips. It came out super quick and the presentation and taste was better than expected. I was surprised and this confirmed it for me that it wasn't sheer luck that I had a good meal last time. I was thinking they've certainly upped their game. Prices were reasonable and keeping with the area. You can certainly go to better rated pubs such as the terminus in Clifton hill and pay slightly more but I think the food quality for pub food is on par with that establishment. Other higher priced meals I am yet to order. I would have given a 4 rating if it weren't for the bartender filling my partners drink to the brim and it spilled on the way to the table while I was trying to carry it. It's a small gripe but I think the new food it a testament to the new chef in the kitchen. This was confirmed by one of the wait staff. The old chef is still there but the new one has contributed to reviving the menu. My hat goes off to him or her. Until I go back for a more expensive meal I will hold back from giving a higher rating. Keep it up Barkly hotel I'm glad you can join the burgundy st strip of restaurants that are doing good food and making the area a food destination.

Great food tonight.. below average gaming room service tonight. People changed without relaying who needed to go what. I will act with my feet and go elsewhere. Im sure the staff want even give a rat anyhow.
Cinntonic
It's ok, better for small groups. Don't order the steak, it only comes well done. Salmon was great, mushroom risotto was tasty but undercooked, steak was ordered rare and came out medium well. Past experience many steaks have been sent back.

So first time in the recently renovated "The Henry" thought it was pretty great and food was very good for a pub!<br/><br/>My Meal - Chefs Special - "Deconstructed, pork, bacon and mushroom pie with flakey puff pastry"<br/>Positives - Really tasty meal with heaps of different types of delicious mushrooms very fresh and tasty soft meat.<br/>Negatives - None really other than its a hearty meal more of a winter dish I guess but still delicious.<br/><br/>Sarah's Meal - Pub Classic - "Chicken Parma"<br/>Positives - Chips were very tasty, veggies were average. The Parmas actual chicken was really fresh and the ham too.<br/>Negatives - The napoli sauce was too rich and a little sickening.<br/><br/>Drinks - Amazing chocolate milkshakes!<br/><br/>Service - Staff really seem to care and are working very hard in my opinion but possibly understaffed (was a Public Holiday)

I have a drink here, never had a meal. First time in bistro/rest for dinner fri nite. Laid back relaxed bar/drinking area before having a meal. I'm sure they've done some Reno work, looks modern and spacious. Good menu with some old time favs and not complicated. Above average and service was a little under the pump. Possible re visit

Overpriced and underwhelming! Our family congregates there every few years and for such a special occasion, expect great food and value for money. Unfortunately our recent visit fell short of that mark. Steaks not cooked to order, roast beef rubbery, veggies ordinary, pizza burnt, chicken too spicy. For dishes in the $20-$30 range you'd reckon they could do better. One of us did have the Nachos, which as an entree (appetizer) for $12 was 3 times the size of the mains, and practically infallible, tastewise. The spirit of each others company was the saving grace, but with plenty of alternatives for our hard earned dollar, next time we'll gather somewhere else. The waitstaff were friendly and punctual.

Reasonable food with generous servings. Cheap pre made foods to choose from as well if you are on a budget. Bright airy pub but the only big fail is all the smokers in front as the smoke comes into the front part of the hotel and also whacks you in the face as you go through main entrance. Best to go through the Cape street entrance to avoid the smoke!

Have been here sooo many times for a quick meal. Food is a hit or miss. Sometimes you can walk away satisfied others its just ok. Lovely friendly staff. Layout is relaxing comfortable.  Great place to go for a family meal.

First time dining since an updated menu was put into place. I think this is a great solid suburban pub, which in my experience is prefer difficult to find these days. The atmosphere is laid back (exactly what you expect for what the place is). The food was pretty great actually - a higher standard than I was expecting. And a complimentary hot bread roll - yessss! Will happily make this place a regular, easy, after work low-key dinner venue if the quality remains the same.

I have been to the Barkly's Hotel several times. This is surprisingly a good location if you're after a hassle-free meal on any night of the week. Staff are friendly, the atmosphere is nice and the layout of the restaurant is refreshing. When seated at the table, you'll be provided with some bread whilst you have a read over the menu. They don't do table service, so expect to head to the bar to order your food and beverages. The drinks are fairly basic and are what you would expect to see at your typical bistro/pub. The menu is a little pricey, but you're given plenty of options. Wait times for food from past experience typically ranged between 25-30 minutes. On a busy night of the week ie Friday, Saturday, expect to wait a little longer. My partner and I have had the chicken breast, steak (on Wednesday, which is steak night), the calamari and the chicken parmy. The portion sizes are big. My primary complaint regarding the food is that the steak and chips arrived lukewarm and had obviously sat in the kitchen a little longer than it was supposed too. I'd recommend visiting if you're in the area, especially if you're a local. In saying that, there really isn't anything special about this pub and I wouldn't travel several suburbs to dine here.

Came here for birthday the other night for a birthday and my expectations were low to medium. Although as soon as I saw the menu, I was pleasantly surprised! So many choices, but I decided on the Cajun chicken and it was great! The portions were large, the hollandaise sauce and avocado were great additions to the meal. Fantastic value for money

Atmosphere was good, good selection behind the bar and friendly bar staff. It was very quiet but food came out overcooked (burnt) and flavourless. Could only eat 1/2 of it and went down the road to Maccas. Had to go home and brush teeth due to the charcoal taste in our mouthes before we could eat anything else. Not worth the $50 we spent, I do not recommend.

The way to lose a repeat customer. We called in at Barkly's on Monday night (as we have done a number of times, found a table in the Bar area and ordered two meals, a Works Burger and a Parma from the Bar menu at the Bar, as we have done before and pointed out to the Waitress where we were sitting in the Bar. Unfortunately, I did not check my receipt until too late. We were served a Burger and a Parma supposedly from the Bistro Menu. The only difference was the price and Burger came with the Fries in a little basket and the Parma came with a very limp green salad.<br/>On pointing the discrepancies out to the wait staff we were told we should have been more specific with our orders despite there being no signage to separate the two types. There was no attempt to rectify the error and we advised them we would not be returning to this establishment. It did not seem to worry them in the slightest. There are too many good Hotels. Restaurants and Cafes in the Heidelberg area to even consider this hotel again.

Fantastic function. We are so impressed with the function staff , room and food. Our son celebrated his 21st there last night. We have had so many comments from relatives and friends who were impressed with the quality and amount of finger food, and the friendliness of the staff .<br/>We have also eaten in the bistro a number of times. The two Parma devotees in the family have given Barkly's a Parma rating of in the top 3 - ever! We always find polite and helpful wait staff and the environment is very family friendly.

Our favourite local pub!!. My family and I have been eating at barklys hotel for years now!<br/>The staff are fantastic! always will to help with anything.<br/>The food is always perfect size! (best parmas around! )<br/>The catch of the day is always exciting!<br/>management, keep up the wonderful work with your staff!
Tony
Good pub food. Good quality pub food in a nice modern environment. Prices not too bad and food quality and serve sizes are both what you would expect from a city pub meal.

Love this pub. Surprised to see any negative feedback at all on this Hotel.<br/>Friends and Family love the food.<br/>Staff are always more than helpful and look happy to be there<br/>We will be back.

Disappointing. Looking for a good meal with friends but found food service slow. Staff did not come us to ask how the meal was. One meal cold and all meals did not come out together. Would not go back or recommend establishment.<br/>Big M

Sooooo disappointing this could be a wicked pub BUT the food is always "just" edible. The place lends itself to more, the staff are always fantastic and its clean if not a little sterile. Such a shame as the area is crying out for a decent Gastro pub! With the right menu this could be it!!! Note to the Manager, we eat here a lot as my daughter loves the kids packs etc... If ONLY you looked to local pubs in Clifton hill and Fitzroy for ideas on menu content we would be here every night with bells on! Please consider!!!!!
Paul
I have been here on a few occasions and found it to be nice and very generous helpings will b back again.
Debra Moroney
Great Local. My partner and I come here all the time. (Thats why I'm scratching my head at the negative reviews?)<br/>I/we have eaten here many times and without a word of a lie I have never had a bad meal here. The portions are generous and its one of the best parmas in town, beautiful smokey ham sets it off. We will be back
M. A.
Good service.. Ordered salmon and asked for veggies and was told I needed to order a side dish, most other places would replace items on the dish. Food was okay, thought it was just a bit expensive. Service was excellent and staff friendly.
Ross
Poor Pub Food. Very disappointed - started with entree's salt and pepper calamari (very bland, no salt and pepper), garlic prawns came served in 1/2 a centermitre of oil and where not fresh sea food, mains very average burgers very salty and manufacture ,risotto - bland and over cooked, salmon over cooked. Best thing of the menu bread rolls and chips.
Denny
Disappointing. Really disappointed. Have been going to Barklys for years and always found the food to be good but they have slimmed their menu down from 3 pages to 2. We were handed the old menus by mistake so when placing our order everything that we had chosen had been taken off the menu then we had to check the new menus. The prawn and chicken stacks have gone, no puddings, apparently they have gone Italian! Anyway settled on the salt and pepper calamari and didn't enjoy it. Won't be heading back in a hurry!
Phil Watkins
Very common god and service great if ya don't expect much. Chicken breast dry, mixed leaves wet and mulled up flavor, all staff are on thier was to other careers not a hospitality professional in sight, it's a pity people except this standard of food and service
Joemanovella
Birthday dinner for Mrs Pauline Manovella. We had the unfortunate experience last night of the worst meal we have ever <br/>eaten. Out of 9 meals only 4 were edible. The salt/pepper calamari was calamari that had coursely grated salt covering the plate and was inedible, and the chips meant to come with the meal were forgotten. The "Manager"<br/>took the meal away, and another was never offered. My daughter went home hungry.<br/>The Veal Saltimbocca came with 3 tiny pieces of veal and very second-rate prosciutto. The best thing on the plate was the broccolini. We were offered two desserts in place of the veal, but declined.<br/>We were given a voucher in the hope we would return, but this seems very unlikely. Would have preferred the amount to be credited to our credit card as we spent a substantial amount on these meals. <br/>The 'kids menu' items were of slightly better standard, but the chicken nuggets still extremely dry.<br/>Lasagne ordered by future daughter-in-law did not come with the salad specified, only two leaves of something resembling pea sprout leaves. The added extra was an olive pip which somehow found its way into the lasagne and almost broke her tooth.<br/>I would appreciate some feedback from the hotel regarding this incident as it was a very unhappy ending to a birthday which until then had been very nice.
Alex
Food is reasonable! Service was very friendly and always smiling!
Daniel Carison
Where is my meal???
Mary Karatzas
Never again. Employ service friendly and experienced staff and I may come back. Service is a joke and food is better at macdonalds.
BellaItalia
Good Local Pub. Good basic standard pub fare, reasonable prices, always busy and the kids enjoyed their meals. Good local pub with a huge dining room.
Christine B
Can recommend the toasted sandwiches and/or rolls for lunch from the front bar - good value and fresh. Free rolls upon being seated are very tasty. Definately worth a visit for dinner.
Jenjen
Thumbs up!. Great for after work drinks and catch ups. It's a shame some of the patrons are so intrusive and get served way passed the point of RSA
Gone_skiing
Local pub of choice. Our local pub of choice. The meals are always good & the service is quick. Love the complementary hot rolls upon arrival. Always attentive and ask us if we would like a highchair for our little one.
Michelle
Best local pub. We moved to the area 3 years ago. Since then we frequently visit Barkly's and each time we are so happy to recieve friendly service, clean, good food that is well priced! All our friends and family travel miles to visit our local pub because its the best. Barkly's is an all rounder and not able to be compared to its nearby competition. Absolutely outstanding, all rounder, thank you and keep it up!
Dons1977
Went there after bistro renos had been completed and had a disappointing meal. Menu had changed which was annoying as the fantastic bbq pork ribs had gone. Had a steak that was unevenly cooked and cold. It was served with frozen peas (wth?), two unappetizing flat mushrooms and dry deep fried roast potatoes. More effort required here for the sides - very lazy and unimaginative even for pub fare. Kids parmas were good size but were again served with what looked like partially dehydrated peas, corn and carrot mix. Kids meals used to come loaded with freshly cooked broccoli and other fresh veggies - so I'm not sure what's going on there? <br/>

Good Restaurant & Function Venue. Been here twice now, the first time was for my cousin's 21st and the second was for dinner. We found that they were very accommodating for my cousin's birthday, and the food was beautiful (which can be rare for cocktail parties). I went here with my parents for dinner a few months later, and found the service to be the same, wonderful. The food was fast to come out and was all reasonably priced. We had the trio of dips to start, which I found delicious. My Dad had the fisherman's plate, which he found some of the seafood to be wonderful and others just average. I went with steak, which was cooked perfectly, while my mother went for the chicken and pumpkin risotto, which she found surprisingly tasty and full of flavour. We were to full to stay for dessert, but I will defiantly return next time I am around that part of town. Would also recommend it highly as a function venue.

Best local Pub. Barkly's is a great place for a casual relaxed meal.<br/>food is always good, I have eaten here many times and have not had a bad meal. The service is friendly and its great value for money. Parking can be difficult but its worth it!
