Review Momoco Sushi - Heidelberg

Anthony Jreige
I was really excited about my Tofu Don rice Bowl but was unfortunately disappointed. It was nothing like the pictures online or on the menu. I ordered extra veggies and unfortunately only received green leaves. Not sure who would order more veggies and would like 7 green leaves??? The menu also says breaded crumbed tofu. I got a soggy mess After calling up they said they would send my order once again and deliver. I ordered miso soup and was expecting my tofu Don rice bowl and forgetting about whatever happpened. Would have gave them 5 stars if they did. Unfortunately I received miso soup that had leaked all over my tofu. Not even a rice bowl or my extra veggies. I called up again 4th time calling. Tried my best to explain the situation and sent him the photos. He did not care at all. Last picture is of the extra veggies! Al I wanted was what the picture looked like. Nothing else 😭😭 Ordered via Uber eats

Had katsudon from here for the first time. Taste was ok-perhaps I’d left the food a bit too long, hence it felt a bit dry. But serving size was big, and maybe would’ve tasted better if I dined at the restaurant. Staff are friendly. Will maybe try something else from the menu next time.

Ordered kani salad and I was very much looking forward to try. Unfortunately, not worth the wait time and money It was absolutely awful and I hated it. Soft shell crab was very small and sauce japanese BBQ sauce?) and mayo was on it so it wasn't crunchy at all. Plus furikake japanese seasoning on it....what the hell?! It came with crab salad with mayo, daikon pickle, ginger pickle and whole combination was very very wired... I regretted I ordered the dish. The restaurant itself is nice so I think it's OK but NOT the dish!!

went in to dine in, all staff were super friendly and went above and beyond our expectations. food was served quickly and was absolutely delicious! would definitely go back again and recommend this place 😃

It used to be a decent Japanese restaurant when previous owner was running it. Tried a few times after it changed management and was not impressed. It’s understandable that the food style has changed due to change of ownership, also understandable that restaurant is short of staff. But it was a real mess: wrong order was sent to the table, poor ingredients was used, so was the presentation, entree only came 30mins after we finished the mains
And the girl working at front counter doesn’t really care how busy the restaurant was, and doing things very slowly. I feel sorry for other staff who was rushing to get work done.

I’m really sad to leave this review, but I’ve never had such oily Renkon chips.. they’re literally swimming in oil and undercooked. 😭

Tried to order a salmon avo roll fresh as all the rolls on display looked like they had been sitting out most of the day, took me a good 10mins to explain what I wanted to the guy taking my order, then the chef refused to make it- don't advertise something you won't make. Fortunately there is another sushi place across the road with much better customer service and a better menu.
Irene Camp
Definitely a hidden gem of Japanese restaurant. It is really a traditional Japanese meal .miso salmon are cooked to perfection. I really love it. Staff are friendly. Will definitely come back to try other menu item.

Went for lunch with a work colleague, ordered 3 sushi rolls salmon avo, salmon avo with brown rice and chicken teriyaki. Also ordered the California rolls and beef tataki, sushi was amazing, nice flavorful and fresh, wasabi was spot on, beef tataki was melting in the mouth, overall delicious. Would recommend this place if you’re in Heidelberg for sure

3.5 I’m giving this place<br/>But on the higher side rather then the lower side<br/>Always consistently good Japanese here<br/>One thing that is always good here is the service is good<br/>It’s just a good little local jap place :)

Friendly family place. Fish used in Sashimi could be fresher. Good variety and the cooked menu is better than the raw food selection. Ample seating inside restaurant
Linda Zhang
The food was very average to be honest. I’ve ordered the sukiyaki don and I was a bit disappointed, as it didn’t really taste authentic. The customer service was alright. Overall it was pretty average.

This place is just in the neighborhood, so we decided to give it a go.. We ordered the large sushi and sashimi boat, it’s really worth the money, though the quality is just average. We will come back again when we feel like having Japanese in Heidelberg.
Quicksmart
The food has been excellent on each of my 5/6 visits, staff are really lovely, we are spoilt with 2 excellent Japanese restaurants in burgundy street!

Came here with friends ( 3 kids and 6 adults) good selection of food .. everything is yummy especially the sashimi and sushi!<br/>Love how the curry don comes with a small plate of salad ( need to have vege intake ✅)<br/>Okonomiyaki is a bit average but everything else is nice
Ann T
Very friendly staff! Good sushi and curry katsu don. Also liked that they added an extra container of salad which goes great with the same dish. Quick service and good serving size.
Kristy Harding
Been here a few times now and each time I have had to wait longer than expected for my take away whilst watch the staff talk behind the counter..

a delicious dinner that really hit the spot ! <br/><br/>my brother got so excited about the Yukiudon noodles being gluten free and i had to try some as they were to die for <br/><br/>I had the Teriyaki Don which consisted of gluten free teriyaki chicken on rice both amazing dishes i cannot fault <br/><br/>my brother and i shared the sushi and sushimi assortment served on a boat and omg how cute!!! i loved the presentation of the sushi and sushimi, plus tasted amazing <br/><br/>when i asked the waitress about gluten free options she knew straight away and had no issues around it! quick service and overall very happy

Excellent service! Food is always fresh and yummy. Service is really fast. One of my favourite japanese restaurants around the area! Highly recommend !

Really delicious food and good service. Very happy with the decent sized salad which came with my meal also Teriyaki and Rice. A great experience.
Shaun Lim
The food was pretty good, but the service was very slow and the waiting staff was very inefficient and inexperienced. We waited at least 40 minutes before we were served our mains.
Elle Ng
Food is not bad, pretty decent... really liked the sukiyaki don but what I was really annoyed about is inefficient service and our food took 40 mins to come...
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Japanese here is quite nice. Ours came via ubereats so needed reheating. Gyoza were nothing special and I wouldn't bother again but the Gyu Don was great tasting but probably needed a little more sauce to mix through the rice. A few people had the bento box which looked nice also.
Peline Tan
Service was amazing, although I question the authenticity as there was mixed frozen veggies in both our Curry Katsu don and Katsu don. My husband and I thought that the curry on the curry Katsu was not sufficient and flavour tasted like something from an instant mix pack. Although I have to say both pork pieces were crispy yet juicy, just cooked perfectly. Perhaps the sushi rolls are better?

Rated<br/>  This is my favourite restaurant Have been coming here since it opened- eat here 2-3 nights a week if not sit down we do takeway.  The best Californian rolls  (thank you "D") - I have my favorite meal each time and it never disappoints,  The staff are friendly and quick.  My kids love bento boxes (good value)  keep up the great work - "Jenni"

Quite fond of momoco, not the hugest fan of japanese food however momoco does it well, I love the ebi shrimp with chilli mayo and the noodle soup here is good, tried the sashimi with rice and was tasty, very fresh flavours.

Come here all the time, am never disappointed with the level of service and the quality of food. Some of the best sushi I've ever had. AMAZING!

Good sushi place to try on in the suburbs. Pocket friendly with good quantity. Good place to go for confused đŸ€·â€â™€ïž situations. Would recommend this to friends.

No! No no no no no. You have to really work hard to get something this wrong.<br/><br/>My food was overcooked, bland and felt stale. It was also drenched in teriyaki syrup that was both too sweet and too salty and had me draining my quite overpriced calpico drink to wash the taste out. Also, if you want to offer a dining area, don't open a prepacked takeaway container of salad from the chiller in front of me and serve it to me on a plate, it's not what 'dine in' means.<br/><br/>Also, if your staff wish to sleep across the seats in the rear section of the restaurant, possibly tell them to do so out of sight of the customers, and please have enough presence of mind to not force your customers to have to fetch their own cutlery and napkins at a table service restaurant, while you clump in a doorway on your Mobile phones.<br/><br/>Deep fried okonomiyaki. DEEP FRIED? My vegetarian was initially excited about the offerings on the menu, but this grew to horror when her dishes arrived.<br/><br/>No. HELL no.<br/>

Really good little Japanese restaurant. Sushi is always freshly made. If you want to order takeaway they are super quick with getting your order ready. My favourite is the sushi and the sukiyakidon.
Mabelle Bo
This place served spoilt tuna sashimi and when I complained one waiter said initially it may be a little off and then later the cashier said it was fresh. It was definitely not fresh at all. Poor service and its disgusting that as a Japanese restaurant they think it's acceptable to sell expired produce! Avoid at all costs!
Sweet Chilli
I've been here a couple times now and it's great for a quick bite. We had the entree of ebi (small deep fried prawns) with a chilli mayo dipping sauce and the roasted eggplant. The eggplant was yum it's always yum when cooked well. The prawns were nice change. For mains we had the sakana seafood and vegetables miso soup with ramen noodles and the gyu don with beef and vegetables. Both did the trick for a late night starving couple. Good meals
Liza
Absolutely love this place! Food is authentic, service is excellent and also very affordable. My kids love the food there which is a plus. We eat here often!
Svm
Food here is usually nice but does not always seem fresh. Service is not very friendly and if you have kids even less so. The restaurant could be cleaner or maybe it just needs an update. I prefer the cleanliness, freshly cooked Japanese food across the road. However neither are truly 'authentic'.
Lilyeatscake
Though a little bit more expensive than the other Japanese restaurant nearby, this is quite a lot better in terms of quality and taste. My serving of curry noodles and tofu was so large I couldn't finish it! Very delicious.

Beth and I happened upon Momoco Sushi by chance. We had just finished watching a movie at the Hoyts Cinema at Northland and were a little peckish. As we exited the Shopping Centre we saw a whole bunch of people eating sushi and decided to give the restaurant a go. I'm glad we did, as we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Beth loves sushi and wasabi, whereas I love smoked salmon and California rolls. We both found the service to be great, particularly at such a busy time in the evening.

Great food, okay service. <br/>Everything I've tried from Momoco I've found delicious! The sushi is made fresh to order on Sunday, and a platter of 5 pieces comes with very large portions. The curry katsu don is delicious, and the curry sauce is mild in spice but full of flavour. The food here doesn't leave you feeling gross like some other greasy takeaway Asian food does.<br/>The service is not very friendly. The staff often look at you like you're not meant to be there. This place gets crazy busy at lunch time, but is pretty quiet for dinner which is nice.

DO NOT GO HERE!!<br/><br/>My partner and I went for a quiet, light dinner after a movie on New Years Eve.<br/><br/>My partner ordered the grilled tuna salad. Thank goodness I did not try his dish (I am also pregnant), as my partner has been vomiting all morning with severe food poisoning!! The bathroom smells like tuna!!! Not the New Years Day we were expecting.<br/><br/>I have allergies to onion and am a vegetarian. I ordered the agedashi tofu which stated tofu lightly fried with lemon soy sauce. I also ordered a green lettuce salad with avocado and mayo. <br/>The agedashi dish came out covered in what look liked flakey onion; however smelled like fish. When I asked, I was informed it was flake. Now reading reviews I see that it was fish scales. I tried to pick them off. The menu did not have the flakes listed as an ingredient. The salad I was served was 3/4s of a bowl of grated cabbage, a few lettuce leaves and 3 slices of avocado. Definitely not authentic Japanese food or cooking.<br/>If you don't want to get food poisoning, don't risk eating there!!

Second time we've been here. The service is very good here and the food is really reasonable for a la carte sushi place. We had the California roll - a giant inside out sushi roll which was fresh and well presented, a octopus salad, not what I expected and didn't like the flavour or texture - think I wanted it to taste more like baby octopus and it didny feel that fresh. The udonyaki stirfry was shiny and tasted great. So all in all, pleasant experience.

Momoco Sushi - Nonono Sushi. Was really looking forward to eating at this joint which looks really great from the outside<br/>Was handed an easy to use menu with lots of photos.....great start to the night<br/>Unfortunately it was all down hill from there<br/>The sashimi was super thick - less is more peoples!<br/>On top of that, there were fish scales on the salmon sashimi......in my 20 years of eating Japanese food in Melbourne, I have never ever had fish scales on sashimi<br/>I brought this to the attention of the waitress but she did not understand the word "fish scales"<br/>And finally the chicken teriyaki bento box had 4 pieces of thinly sliced chicken buried in a pile of rice<br/>Ahhh.....Momoco sushisan, I wanted to like you but alas it was not to be
Jess Carey
..The hands down winner has to be the meiji rolls: fresh mango, roast duck, avocado and mayo sushi hand rolls, wrapped in super thin omelette. This is absolutely incredible, and at $12.50 for 8 pieces, this would fill up one person pretty decently!

Loved it . Recommend

Good!. I always love to come here. Really cheap and great food and service :)

Amazing food, extremely cheap. Came here tonight for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. After reading reviews I was expecting horrible service however the front door was opened for us by staff and we were treated amazingly the whole time. Very friendly staff and very helpful when we asked questions about the dishes! Food was amazingly quick (out within 10 mins) and it was fantastic and fresh! We ordered way too much food and the staff offered to allow us to take home the left overs which we were very happy about but a bit embarrassed to ask! When it came to paying the bill, we were flabbergasted by how cheap it was! for so much food!! Glad I ignored the negative reviews because I will be adding this restaurant to my list of locals!

Wasn't impressed. On paper, it looks like the real deal, with good menus, easy to understand photos and descriptions.<br/><br/>In reality, however...<br/><br/>*what was that smell in the upstairs part next to the kitchen? The sewerage leaking? Was very offputting.<br/><br/>* Sashimi - should never be served over a centimetre thick. It was like someone had told a junior staff member who had never eaten japanese to just copy the photo, not realising how thick the sashimi meats should be cut.<br/><br/>* Gyoza - chicken was underdone inside the gyoza and the outside practically fell apart, which suggests to me that they steamed for too long. <br/><br/>* Other dishes tried were okay but not quite right. The sauces were correct, the way the dishes were served weren't quite right. Have encountered this before, where its been chinese staff for a japanese restaurant. In the end, everything gets cooked in a chinese style and its not good. <br/><br/>If we went back, it would be because we knew to expect decidedly below average japanese but were hungry. That situation won't be for a long time.

Nice Place. Their sushi is really nice, compared with these chain sushi stores like Sushi Sushi or Yoyogi. For the same price you get larger size and better quality and taste.
Justin
Great all round. Tasty food with good portions. Attentive service and well priced (even received a freebie!). Will definitely be returning soon.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!. I am both appalled and distressed at the quality and service of this restaurant. I strongly advise people to avoid eating here at all costs and we won't ever be returning to repeat this fiasco.<br/><br/>Reasons to avoid:<br/>* Bitchy staff who evidently were looking and talking about us<br/>* Poor quality food & over priced<br/>* Poor service (rude, snappy, incompetent, language barrier)<br/><br/>To start things off the food was unpleasant and quite average for the price. Their website clearly states "We only use top quality ingredients and organic goods that is imported from Japan and produced locally in Australia." and I can assure you that the quality of food from here was poor. My sister and I ordered a scallop and mango salad with the mango being served from a can and dressing that was from a bottle, both of which you'd buy at any supermarket evidently exposing the little truth behind their motto. We also ordered a seafood fried rice which had processed crab meat in it that my sister deemed inedible. Also, I ordered a bowl of rice which the waiter repeated back to me and also wrote down but then never brought out. When questioned about where the rice was she simply gave a blank stare and had no idea what we were referring to. She then went and brought someone out to confirm we had actually ordered it.<br/><br/>All other customers had their bills brought to their table except ours. Also, all other customers had the door opened for them as they exited except us. As we were leaving the man at the door simply watched us walk passed him and we just had to exit ourselves as he sat there doing nothing at all. All the staff proceeded to eat their dinner among us as we were still dining which we found unprofessional. While they were doing this we caught them turning around to look at us as they were obviously talking about us. As we went to pay the woman greased both myself and sister off as her boyfriend paid. She was snappy and incredibly impolite. <br/><br/>Overall the experience was quite disgraceful and upsetting. We really shouldn't have paid given the whole experience.

Boo! Hiss!. Okay. Well I KNOW MELBurnians pride themselves on their city - its coffee, its food. Its art, even. Why are things never as good as people make them out to be? Once again, I have managed to encounter a mediocre/bad eatery among the many mediocre/bad eateries that seem to operate in every corner of Melbourne.<br/><br/>What I ordered: Ma-po tofu don $10<br/>What i got: frozen vegetables (carrot cubes and peas), cubed tofu (straight from the package - not cooked or spiced in any way). About 4/5 - 3/4 steamed rice with topping 1/5-1/4. Bottled chilly sauce (I just burped, I recognise that 'bottled' flavour).<br/>Bad, very bad.
Melonsago
Borderline Inedible. Ordered a Tempura Udon and a serve of Soft Shell Crab sushi roll, and the only thing I could stomach from the meal without struggling was the udon noodles. <br/><br/>Let's talk about the tempura first. The texture of the prawn was a strange mashed up mess, almost foamy and tasted nothing like what a prawn ought to be. Not expecting anything classy at this price range, but even frozen prawns don't taste this bad. The mushroom was hard barely cooked, while the fish was overcooked to the point you could not bite through it, and was tough like bad squid.<br/><br/>The Soft Shell Crab sushi was equally mushy, icky and tasteless as the prawn. The rice was warm and sticky as though straight out of the rice cooker, and had no flavouring or vinegar to it what so ever as sushi should. Plus the pieces collapsed right in front of you as soon as you picked it up.<br/><br/>Not a great experience, especially when you can overhear people in the kitchen talking about so-and-so "picking up chics". Won't be returning, as I've had better Japanese food as shopping centre food courts.
Klaracole27
Not saucy enough. I went here expecting a good meal<br/>never have I been more wrong, I ordered a spicy tofu rice dish that had a far too big rice to sauce ratio that left me feeling cheated and victimised. To top it off, we were given tea as you would receive water and were told we had to pay for it. This restaurant is sneaky and will bamboozle you and your sauce.

Downgrade from grade A. Im regular customer there, recently their food was downgraded , its seems missing something on the food, specifically on my favorite teriyaki salmon and fried udon. The staff told me their previous main cheif was resigned. Opps, hopefully can have back the geade A food from there again.
Janerony75
Different taste. I been there with my family dinner once a week form past 6 months at heideberg. The new cheif cooked not as good as previous cheif. The teriyaki source taste not good as before. Its look eishy-washy now. My lovely main cheif not there anymore, miss his food and My lovely daugther miss her favorite fried rice.

Pretty bad experiences, the sashimi not even fresh. Won't visit again

Enjoyable enough with friendly staff. Worth a visit

Extremely polite and attentive staff provide a very reasonably priced cuisine. My family are regulars.

I returned for the second time after my first was brilliant take away. We further investigated the menu and found it to be just as brilliant. Sooooo fresh. Sooooo good. And really lovely staff
Nicole
Good, but not the best. Went at dinner, the food isn't fantastic, but it's decent. The price is good and the service was very good; fast and attentive.

The food is goodd. Good Japanese restaurant.<br/>I believe it is luck for those who live around this restaurant.<br/>Price is OK and food is more.<br/>Now they open Sunday as well.<br/>Well, I believe the Boss is non- English speaker but he is nice and willing to listen his customers.<br/>If you not living too far, you should try.

Enjoyed my Bento A, endless cups of tea. Miso was good too.<br/>Great lunch time venue - good busy vibe too.
Bloodwork
Amazing food and great and super quick service whether it's takeaway or eat in. The Bento boxes are amazing value for the size and quality of food and the sushi and sashimi is always fresh. Heidelberg has been missing good sushi for a long time, new favourite!

Good value japanese restaurant:<br/>great food, generous servings, good value<br/>we go again, and again..always satisfied<br/>ideal for a fab family feed
Gentle Lady
Fresh ingredients, reasonable price, friendly staffs not really authentic japanese but still very good.
Iola Chan
Not v authentic - But you would expect that when the owner and staff spoke Cantonese. Went with a friend for lunch on a Friday ~ v busy trade with the local workers. Sushi rolls ~ massive when compared to "sushi sushi" and sold for similar price, but the fish rolled inside is like off cut slices and the roll falls apart when picked up. I ordered the oyakudon ( they described it as chicken cooked sukiyaki style on rice)... it was the most..erm.. Colourful oyakudon I've had in my life... Corn kernels, sliced snowpeas, broccoli etc adorned the chicken and egg. And the rice? It was swimming in a pond of stock(?)...another couple of spoonfuls more and it could be called rice in broth... Oh and they had the audacity to call fried rice 'yakirice'

Great little place. Fast/good service, tasty food and very reasonable prices.

As a first timer I wad quite impressed, excellent service and menu. Will be back!
Monkeybusiness
Well priced, great service, very friendly staff, amazing food! Got to try the duck, avo & mango sushi!! A very pleasant dining experience & will definitely return!

I found a silver fish in my udon soup takeaway. When I complained, they were not concerned. No refund. Not impressed.
Yumyumfoodyum
The sushi here is really good. Generous handrolls which won't disapoint. The hot food can be a bit hit and miss, but I keep coming back for their sushi. Yum!
Pinkpossum
Not very authentic. Ordered oyakodon. Its got frozen(but cooked)peas and carrot!!!!
Salt N Sugar
Service was really good but the food wasn't really authentic. I guess you get what you paid for. We ordered agedashi tofu for entree and it was very disappointing. Tofu was ok but could be crispier and less flour, and the sauce was not right. We also ordered katsu don which was just okay for the price we paid. Too much rice and the meat was a bit tough.
Bbec
Wonderful! So cheap, cheerful, beautiful food, huge servings, great service
Georgia
Enjoyable!. I love momoco's bento boxes. Also, their tofu curry is phenomenal! I'm very happy to have this place in Heidelberg!
Hungrymumma
Very polite staff. Tasty food, we ordered curry Katsu don and teriyaki don, both delicious. Very good price!! Highly recommend.
Ruby-Jean
Tasty, Quick and Well Priced Japanese!. Place is small, but cosy. The food varies on each visit (if you like consistency - ie tempura vegies, which fish features more prominently on sashimi tray) but I dont mind that - to me, it means they are choosing the freshest produce available. <br/><br/>Sashimi and gyoza are good. As is the tempura and terriyaki. Cover all your bases here and go with a Bento Box which gives you a great variety of what is on offer. <br/><br/>The service is quiet, but lovely and quick. Unlike some Japanese restaurants, this is not expensive - and you might find yourself slightly surprised when the final bill is rung up. <br/><br/>Fo

Full of flavour. Chose to have Bento C, which is a combo of tempura, salmon and sashimi. Very generous portions, had to share some with hubby. Serve came with 3 lightly fried gyozas - yummy! Hubby had noodles, rajisen I think it was called...mmmm...slight food envy there. Great service, would recommend.
