I've been visiting The Diplomat for a while and can honestly say that it's my favourite venue for a coffee, a bite to eat and a place to meet friends and family! The coffee is outstanding and the venue has a great feel to it but it's the staff that make this place so special!
The front of house staff are so friendly, down-to-earth and welcoming that it makes my week just to visit. Eban and the crew have really made something amazing!
And the phenomenal work done by the Kitchen staff really comes through with their food. The menu is incredible and the specials are mind blowing each time they change. Alot of love and hard work has gone into each plate and it shows, amazing work!!
Absolutely an awesome place. Beautiful, friendly staff, delicious coffee and food. Can not find any fault with this place. Highly recommend!!
We have been searching all over for these guys and finally found them! Service is top notch, menu is reliably great and though there was a wait for a table it was made shorter by having a latte and a chat with staff in the meantime.
I'm part of the furniture! I'm there every week as a minimum. Whether it be I come in to get a take away coffee or go for breakfast or lunch with family or friends. This place sets the standard and is the best cafe going round. Service is perfect, coffee is amazing, food is delicious!!!!!!
Not only is the food fantastic but the staff are wonderful. Its a happy place and they were so lovely paying attention and spoiling our son. Very very impressed! Thank you all. We will be back!
Diplomat is our favourite little hang out when we are in Highett. My son loves the food and even though we order the same things over and over, we love the food and the all the staff. They are always so friendly and accommodating. I'm always telling my friends they should try the restaurant out one day. The food is out of this world and the service amazing!! Thanks Diplomat for always delivering outstanding food & service 😊
Fantastic place.. lovely food.. very yummy.. would go again and will recommend it to anyone !
The staff, the atmosphere and the sick 90s beats have always been the best thing about Diplomat. Have always been blown away by their warm hospitality. Thanks Diplomat! You are a new hang out that I never wanna leave!

Diplomat is an awesome local cafe. It's always packed so don't go expecting an instant table. That said their wait-list moves pretty quick and you can always visit the great butcher next door while waiting. Staff are incredible with kids always looking to engage them in a bit of banter. Fast service, good coffee and nice food.
Travelling over from Perth it was by chance we came across The Diplomat. What a find, thank you to Eban and his crew. Excellent coffee, breakfast (I would add the porridge is a Papa bear portion! ) and lunch. The attention to detail by the staff deserves a five star recommendation. Thank you, I shall see you all next year.
Great coffee, great food, great service. I highly recommend paying this cafe a visit. Eban is awesome & so welcoming to all customers.
There's no better coffee around the area. The staff are super friendly and the food is delicious, fresh and healthy!!! The prob is it's so busy at times you suffer depression bc u just can't get a seat or table so takeaway is the way to go so u still get your fix!!!!
Tom was happy with the coffee and the food was absolutely delicious. A wonderful relaxed vibe with friendly service.
Outstanding! Nailed it.
What a team...The best food I've eaten in a long time.
Coffee was sensational and every single person on the Diplomat smiles like it's their birthday.
Thanks for making mum's 80th just perfect.
Great experience. Delicious food; fabulous service. Not over priced. Probably become my favorite cafe in Highett!! ❤️
My husband and I came here for lunch for the first time today and The Diplomat did not disappoint!
Unfortunately they were unable to seat us inside due to restrictions however, they sat us outside with the outdoor heater on and were happy to bring us inside when a table became available.
I ordered the smashed avo and my husband ordered the mushrooms. Not only was the food arrived within a reasonable time frame, it was also presented beautifully and delicious! There was a nice balance of ingredients with the sweetness of the beetroot pureé being accompanied with the slighyly salty goats cheese.
2 meals and 2 coffees set us back $50 exactly which I felt is quite reasonable. We look forward to our future visits to The Diplomat
The Diplomat is an awesome café that serves delicious food and has great customer service!
It’s the first time I’d ever been to the suburb of Highett. It was a long journey to get there to catch up with a friend who lives out that way. Highett is suburb next to Moorabbin and is only 5 minutes away from Southland Shopping Centre.
For a Saturday, 11.30am arrival, the café was about 70% occupied and it got busier with the weekend lunch crowd.
🔆LOCATION🔆
The Diplomat café is situated on the corner of Railway Parade and Highett Road, opposite to Highett Train Station. This area has a great variety of shops and eateries and convenient access by car and public transport.
The café is very spacious and has lovely greenery overhanging the top with long wide high table.
Near the register is a cabinet with nice selection of cakes and pastries. There’s ample seating and kid/pram friendly.
🔆SERVICE🔆
All the staff here were very friendly and quite prompt with service. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of this café. Although busy, we didn’t feel rushed and our waitress gave us great advice on food options.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
My friend and I ordered:
Smoked Salmon Benedict, $22.00
(with potato & leek rosti, sautéed kale, two poached eggs, beetroot hollandaise & side of inhouse pickled vegetables)
Supersalad, $18.00
(served with quinoah, broccoli, adamame, cauliflower, goji berries, seed mix, shredded kale & beetroot hummus, tossed with inhouse vinaigrette)
Added halloumi $4.50
Latte, $3.80
Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, $6.50
🔆VERDICT🔆
The price for our meals were very reasonable and servings was generous as well. I really enjoyed my smoked salmon benedict. I opt to change poached eggs to semi-fried eggs which they were happy to cater for. I really enjoyed the beetroot hollaindaise, and the potato and leek rosti was very light, fluffy and tasty. Overall a great dish.
My friends supersalad was delicious – had great combination of vegetables and seed the beetroot hummus and vinaigrette was flavourful and worked well with the dish.
Even the drinks we ordered were very reasonably priced. Overall, we had a wonderful lunch at The Diplomat. The service, atmosphere and the food was fabulous.
My favourite local cafe visit weekly, good environment friendly staff, dog friendly, and good cafe food, nice coffee and selection of pastry’s!
So happy they changed their kids menu back to original pancakes so we could return here every weekend for breakfast as a family :) thank you! Always such friendly staff, a beautiful place to have brunch with the family and the food is always delicious. And after trying out all the others, it definitely has the best coffee on the block 👍
We came to this lovely cafe yesterday for a brunch. Coffe was really good even though we ordered the skinny milk. I almost ordered the second cup coz the cup was kinda small. Food was tasty. I would come bback in the future.
Service by the waiting staff could be better but otherwise the food was fabulous
I love this local gem in Highett! A consistently great & awesome cafe which I love to go to!
Cinnamon French Toast w. Mango + Honey + Creme Pat + Red Berry Coulis + Coconut Flakes & Pistachio Praline. This plate was not only aesthetically pleasing to look at, it delivered in flavour on a whole other level! Sweet + Bold + Rich + Textured + Hot & Cold - gave this dish it's outstanding flavour however the Coulis & Fresh mango were a fantastic palate cleanser! Very easy to devour 👍🏽
Broccoli + Pea & Spring Onion Fritters w. Smoked Salmon + Smashed Avo + Lime Aioli & a Poached Egg || 🍞🍳👌🏼
Such lovely attentive staff! Happy to accommodate for all needs & wants! This dish is a great savoury option with some bold & rich flavours!
Don't really make it to this side of town much but when I do, I make a point of trying the food! Chose The Diplomat to grab brekkie with the hubby. Parking was no trouble and we were seated immediately which was a sign of the really great service we received all round. I ordered a soy latte which was so creamy and delicious, that I ordered a second before brekkie was over. I got the chilli scrambled eggs that were ordered extra spicy and with a side of salmon. Partner ordered his usual eggs on toast with bacon and an iced coffee. Food arrived promptly and was delicious. Serving sizes are decent and quality of the food was above average. Cons: we had to ask for butter as it is obviously not served with toast, $7 for smoked salmon is a bit excessive and and I think in this day, plastic straws are a no no. Bill came to $53 including a surcharge for soy milk. Would recommend The Diplomat if you are in the Bayside looking for a meal.
Such a great vibe with beautiful artwork. The food was even better! I had the okonomiyaki which was cooked to perfection and so filling! They did a great job of putting a breakfast twist on a traditional Japanese dish 👏
I went here for breakfast this morning they were a bit under the pump staff still really friendly and not to mention I had ONE OF THE BEST MEALS IVE HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE !!!!! Salmon Benedict I could eat it everyday until I die !!!!
Nice place for brunch. Great look about it and friendly staff. Convenient location being right across from the station. Inside unfortunately however can be a bit loud at times but all in all a good place to go!
My friend and I regularly visit here and are always greeted with friendly smiles and hellos from staff. Food is always very tasty and the fresh juice is worth checking out.
As soon as you walk into The Diplomat you are greeted by staff, no matter how busy they are or how many plates they are carrying they will be sure to say “hey, how are you”. l love coming here for a quick coffee, juice or sneaky snickers cupcake. I’ve come here for a few meals however the only meal that stands out for me and that I constantly think about was the gnocchi, it was on the menu a few years ago but unfortunately has been removed! Bring back the gnocchi - from a customer who seriously dreams about it
Very friendly staff, great chill vibes, perfect place to just chill or catch up with friends or have a meeting. The chocolate waffle was delicious, and looked so amazing!
Looking for a place with tasty food and outdoor seating (so that you can bring your doggy friend/s)? This is the place for you.
In the case that you'd rather enjoy your food indoors, the cafe itself has a pretty cool vibe too.
Great location, friendly staff, great service and yummy brunch!
I got the smoked salmon Benedict ... can’t fault it 10/10. Coffee hit the spot, desserts on display not as impressive.
Thank you for a wonderful meal! Will definitely be back
Although the cafe is busy, which is a good sign I believe, he service is not hampered by this. The staff are friendly, quick and efficient. Food selection is very good and the pricing is at normal breakfast prices. Coffee is good. Recommend for breakfast.
Great food, sweet cakes, slices, coffee, staff and atmosphere (music is always good) I could eat at this place everyday 😂 can’t fault this place on anything.
A great place for brekky. The food is all incredible (I especially love the Smoked Salmon Benedict) and the thickeshakes are actually to die for. Do yourself a favour and order the chocolate or Oreo special when they have it.
really good coffee, great food, nice buzzy atmosphere. the wait staff are really friendly and always keen to have a chat. seems to be a local community vibe with the same regulars meeting here every morning.
I like to drink coffee... this place is good ‘🤗the breakfast is awesome...the coffee shop always busy on the weekend.but I still have time to order !it is good !!!!
Really lovely place!! The service was lovely and the cafe was spacious. There were plenty of seats indoors and outdoors to sit. The food was a great size and super tasty. There was lots of original flavours and unique combinations that’s worked really well together.
Would I return? Happily whenever I am back in the area.
The Diplomat is a spacious cafe that is a fantastic venue for breakfast if you live locally near Highett. On a Sunday morning at 9am our group of 4 were served immediately as we walked in the door. Although the venue was full to the brim we got a table straight away which was nice considering Melbourne these days there's usually a wait. A nice surprise!!
It’s lovely inside, plenty of light coming in from the floor to ceiling windows, an abundance of indoor greenery, wooden furniture, edison bulbs, what’s not to like about this place! The seating is comfortable without trying too hard, a lot of other cafes could learn a thing or two. Sometimes they play RnB which can really boost your mood 😊 Another thing worth mentioning is that they are extremely kid friendly here. I was seeing colouring books and crayons flying out to the tables as fast as the food. It’s great to see that in an age full of technology, that they’re still trying to entertain the kids the old school way!
On the menu is a good range of breakfast options for adults and kids. There is also a lot of clean and healthy foods on the menu – that don’t appear to lack in flavour! The Diplomat has also reinvented some Breaky Classics. The Smashed Avocado has Quinoa throughout it which adds a nice crunch and I was very surprised to find that they had Eggs Benedict with Pastrami rather than Bacon or Ham. If your someone who doesn't eat pork this is a fantastic option and I can highly recommend! Also great if you are a Eggs benedict Fan and want to try it a different way. I had the Breakfast Burrito with added Pulled Pork. It was huge and very tasty, a good option if your wanting a dish without eggs that isn’t an acai bowl etc.
Service? With a smile
Wrap up: It's a must try if your ever in the area!
Pro tip: kids toys can be found on the front counter and lots of parking options on Railway Parade.
> Avocado Smash- Fully loaded with corn salsa, beetroot relish, crumbled fetta, 2 poached eggs and a quinoa crunch on sourdough | @thediplomatcafe <
After a long break away from Melbourne brunch food, I was craving a classic smashed avo. You really feel like you’re at home when you consume it because it is a staple breakfast feast in Melbourne culture. This one had a little twist as it has quinoa throughout the mix. This added a really healthy and energising element that worked extremely well with the overall concept.

Standards were set after I had tried the Ruben benedict from @goodtimesmilkbar however, I believe The Diplomat met these standards and created a very similar and well made meal. This dish was incredibly filling and the flavours were really strong and worked well together.

> 12 Hour Smoked Beef Brisket served with a parsnip and potato rosti, chipotle mayo and a gherkin and apple slaw | @thediplomatcafe <
An absolutely beautiful lunch creation, a dish I would not normally try but what I learnt from ordering it was, you have to branch out and try things out of your comfort zone, otherwise you won’t know what you like and don’t like. I had so many people in my mind when I tried this dish because I knew they would love it too. The brisket was super soft and the sweetness from the apple slaw added a really refreshing element to the dish. The rosti added a drier texture and the mayo gave the meat a little bit of a spicy kick and tied all the flavours together.

Hands down the best in every category. Staff are brilliant, they are always super busy but you never feel rushed or like a burden. Coffee is brilliant regardless of who is on the machine. Food is always delicious, great mix of specials and regular menu. Would recommend this to anyone, it’s like Hammer and Tong but with good service
This place is always busy and always efficient. Excellent staff serving great food in a prime possie. It awesome to have a schmick cafe like this in Highett continuing to do so well. I hope more can lift the area with it
I ordered the Pumpkin & Polenta Slice and a dirty soy chai; and my friend ordered the Wild Mushroom Medley and a chai latte. We both really enjoyed our foods and drinks. Nothing stood out but it was still good overall. Would definitely return if I was in the area. The cafe itself was very chic and spacious, and the location was easy to get to with plenty of parking spaces around.
Excellent service & delicious food...
9.20 on a Sunday morning... totally buzzing... glad we were able to get s table.... 3 mins later... 4 couples waiting....
Kid friendly...nothing is a problem....coffee served the way you like it...hot and strong... this place has a terrific vibe.
Reccomend highly... ●¿●
It is very hard to fault The Diplomat. From the moment you arrive, you are welcomed with great service even if the venue is packed and buzzing. A good range of breakfast options for kids and adults.
Fantastic coffee and food range. The food is always fresh and comes out very quickly even when they’re busy. 9am on the weekends is their busy time so just be aware of that. Staff are 10/10. Always friendly and helpful
Not a fan of salad. Not a fan of veges. They're boring. Most of the time. This place nails balance, complexity of flavours, complexity of textures and oh yes, yumminess. Had a green salad and it was amazing. Espresso single origin - amazing. Coming back.
Delish breakfast and speedy service despite it being peak time on a Sunday morning! The orange juice was so fresh and I feel The Diplomat has reinvented some breakie classics so well. I’ll definitely be back!
The Diplomat was a cafe which Helen and I visited many years back, before we started blogging. One of the positives of food blogging is that it allows us to keep a record of all the places we’ve eaten, so they won’t be forgotten. The Diplomat was one of many places which fell off our radar, and you could say that it was by pure chance that I found these guys again! I went to Highett to buy some steaks for dinner, and just happened to be hungry (as usual). Walking along Highett Road, none of the places appealed to me. As I got closer to the train tracks, memories flooded back of this cafe which had really good food. Without a moment of hesitation, I got myself a seat at the communal table, and it wasn’t until I looked at the top of the menu that I actually remembered the name of this place!
Loved this place for a early morning brunch. Staff were so kind and friendly. Very child friendly and amazing baby chinos.
The food was delish and the coffee was 👍🏼 exactly how it should be strong and no burntness. Love the old school RnB playing. Really set the vibe. Can’t wait to return
The spotlight is all for the Diplomat in Highett area. It is open pretty early in the morning for you to grab a coffee and rush to the train station. The brunch menu is also inviting and appealing
Drop by for a coffee but decided to try their breakfast menu as I had time to kill. Venue was spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. Service was exceptional, the team were enthusiastic and just had a positive attitude giving an 'i want to be here and let me help you' vibe.
One waiter saw I was alone and even offered me the paper. I was waiting for my partner to finish work and i felt bad for taking a table for myself. Although they were busy, they let me take my time and i didn't feel i needed to rush out.
I don't normally order smashed avo, but this sounded like it had some complex components that i was curious to taste how it married together and it did quite well. Well balanced and added crispy bacon which gave a salty sweet contrast in each bite.
Would recommend, although there are quite a few other cafes in the area, i am yet to try. I think these guys have set the bar quite high!
Bright and trendy brunch hang out. We went for breakfast and it was quite busy this Saturday morning. The place is nicely decorated with green leafage against a white background which gave a clean and refreshing feel. The tunes were a bit much for the early morning but helps you wake up to the day. Staff gave good service and food was quite pleasant and well done.
There is always fast and friendly service down at The Diplomat! I had the Nutella French Toast and it was divine!! The coffee was also great! :)
You can see why the hype around this unique cafe hasn't died down! It's a great place to meet friends and grab a coffee or wine. Or perhaps stop by for brunch with the family. The staff are amazing as soon as you walk through the door you are greeted with a smile.
The menu is vibrant and ever changing. So many great options - You can't go passed their smashed avo or the Dirty chook.
Love the music vibes with the r'n'b!
The kids menu is awesome - mini pancakes or soldiers with a egg. They provide a colouring menu and crayons to colour in whilst you enjoy a catch up with friends.
I'm a huge fan of their Chai latte too - Delicious. The coffee is beautiful. Love their ever changing milkshakes.
It's a must try if your ever in the area!
Nice cafe/brunch place in Highett that serves standard breakfast and lunch options with a bit more flair and variety. Love the okonomiyaki, one of our favorites. Place has decent coffee and nice decor, worth a breakfast visit if you are looking for somewhere new to try.
Delicious food and fantastic spot for a good smoothie!!! Love the way the cafe is decorated; clean, simple and fresh which their food also lived by! Very friendly staff!
Really stylish setting and an upbeat atmosphere, all the staff were friendly and efficient. Coffees were great, and the pork benedict was absolutely amazing. Will return soon.
Spacious cafe & friendly service. We tried their Japanese pancake, looked great & very tasty, on the salty side for my liking. The dirty chook was ok, chicken was on the dry side so the sauce was very much needed.
The food was amazing! Lovely ambiance, and the staff here make you feel welcomed right away. The Nutella French toast is definitely a must have!
What I love about this place: everything. Good coffee, good food, good vibe, good service. Ordered Reuben Egg Benedict and my hubby got the Japanese pan cake with pork. The pan cake was a star, pork belly was cooked so tender it melted in your mouth. The sauce was full of flavours, well balanced between sweet and salty. The place was spacious, with big table if u go with friends, plenty of outdoor seating with shade for u to enjoy the fresh air without worrying about getting sun burn. Next time we’ll bring our dog with us since the place is pet friendly. Definitely take our friends here sometimes.
Fantastic venue for breakfast if you live locally near Highett. Would definitely be my go to.
We were served immediately as we walked in the door. Although the venue was full to the brim we got a table straight away which was nice considering Melbourne these days there's usually a wait.
I was very surprised they had Eggs Benedict that had pastrami rather than bacon, so if your someone who doesn't eat pork this is a fantastic option and I can highly recommend!! Everybody uses ham or bacon so this was a nice for something different and it was bursting with flavour.
The decor is also very modern with wooden fixtures and a large share bench table in the middle which makes it a great focal point.
As I said if your in the area definitely drop in!!
Fantastic service...........fantastic layout.......fantastic food...fantastic coffee.. get in early as it gets packed... great for everyone!
Great Cool Vibe! Really Nice Menu Options....
Presented Well, Very Friendly & attentive Staff & Nice Coffee Bean's with lovely Crema on my Double Espresso & Great Latte art on our Almond Latte's.
Thanks Guys.
The overall experience is good, but not great. When my husband and I came for brunch on the weekend, the place was busy, but there is one or two empty tables. Perhaps they were slightly understaffed, we had to wait for about 5-10 min before getting a seat. Before seating, none of the waiters or waitress will smile at you, it was as if you were invisible.
After we got a seat, we got some friendly smiles. Service was relatively quick then. I ordered the kimchi pancake. It was served with pulled pork bulgogi, poached egg, Japanese seaweed and coleslaw. The flavours were interesting and well matched and I wouldn't mind ordering it again.
My husband in the other hand had the French toast. It was soaked with a bland custard. In the end, we both agreed it tasted more like a bread and butter pudding than French toast. Even for the pudding, it tasted less than average.
Went for lunch yesterday at The Diplomat and it did not disappoint. Absolutely delicious food. Lovely atmosphere and super friendly and attentive staff. Great coffee too. Highly recommend this place. It can get busy so get in early for lunch.
If you are here on a weekend be prepared to wait for a table. The brunch here is pretty good but have to say the serving size is small for the price you pay. Even my hot chocolate was tiny!
Excellent coffee and cakes and very spiffy service. Mains are fully priced and perhaps not quite generous enough. But for good reliable coffee this is the one you want.
The Diplomat is definitely a landmark in Height.
Perfect location and a very nice looking shop.
Coffee is definitely in my top 10 as they have the same 2 baristas making your coffee so it will be consistent every time.
Food is good and comes out from the kitchen reasonably quick.
Staff are friendly and well presented.
The Diplomat has been amazing since its opened. They deserve 5/5 for food, service and atmosphere. They are consistent and love that they add specials and variety to their menu. Its been a great addition to the Highett community.
A weekday afternoon catch up was in order with the future bride-to-be, who had recommended The Diplomat Cafe in Highett. I had never been before, or to any cafe in Highett for that matter, so was a eager to see what the area had to offer. I arrived shortly after 10:30am to a bustling cafe. ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
Busy atmosphere, beautiful food! I love the oriental twists they've added to standard brunch items. The kimchi pancake/pulled pork bulgogi was divine, especially if you like a little spice. My potato rösti with salmon had a beautiful wasabi mayo that elevated the dish to new heights. All the staff members were commendably friendly and welcoming. The only downside was that portions were quite small. Would come back :)
Going back to work soon and now I just wanna make the most of my own free time, with my little zonni. 11:14 am, late breakfast for myself @ the Diplomat in Highett. After the whole morning playing with an active little bubba without a toilet break, I think I deserve some quality time out and about. Having my latte at the front window and ordered a piece of Caramel slice, my morning can’t be sweeter.
An absolute gem of a place in a convenient outer-suburban location; The Diplomat is a favourite of ours to go to for brunch in the southern suburbs. The Diplomat boasts an abundant menu of classic brunch dishes taken up a few notches without coming across uptight.
The weekly specials never fail to disappoint (they have a rotating list of dishes, juice blends and an always incredible milkshake of the week, which is my weak point) so it's always a struggle to decide between having the tried and true coffee (sans latte art) and perfectly poached eggs or something that will only hang around for the next seven days.
The decor is decked in foliage and warm wood, always brightly lit, and the staff always welcoming. You may have to wait around a little for a table if you head in at a busy time, but we've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a table for two.
Take a train to Highett station or drive a car just off the Nepean Highway, you're in for a treat.

Came here for my post b'day breakfast and had a great brunch! Catered for 10-12 of us at their peak time. No wait on food. Awesome coffee :)
Got to say that this is now one of my fave brunch places. Came in a few Saturdays ago and we had a big group dining with three kids under three! I cannot stress enough how accommodating the staff were. They engaged with the kids every time they walked past, they played with them and gave them colouring pencils! There are so many places that claim they are kid friendly but I assure you, the diplomat is one of the most kid friendliest places you'll go to.
Now, the coffee and food - just as amazing as the service!
We got the eggs benedict, potato rosti, wild mushroom medley and the kim chi pancake. All were fantastic. The flavours just burst in your mouth leaving you wanting more! Really REALLY happy with our dining experience here! Looking forward to going back again soon!
Great coffee, staff are attentive, happy and vibrant and the food is fresh and tasty with a modern Asian flare. We all had the pork bao which were delicious and the serving size was very generous. Gets a bit loud inside but Will he back for sure.
Awesome people - excellent service and absolutely fabulous food. You know it's good when customers know the staff by name (and vice versa). We are eating my way through the entire menu (and for someone with food intolerances that's a big plus).
They always have specials - eating my way through those - keeps the menu refreshed. The chefs know their flavors.
Recommend the superfood salad, pork bao, kimchi pancake has wonderful flavors, breakfast eggs made perfect and the chicken sanga is filling and delish.
Please bring back the waffles....
... and great coffee! And Prana chai. And pearl green tea.
I love the space this building reveals and the really social, inviting vibes spilling out of this cafe! Always busy, but I have never waited for a table because there's plenty of room inside and outside! The staff are very friendly even when I could see they were very busy with customers and the decor is very cool. The food was good; I ordered the smashed avo and the french toast to go halves with my friend. The french toast was very sweet and could do with some berries or other fruit to lighten it, but was lovely and comforting and would suit someone with a major sweets craving. The avo smash was nice, but felt like it was missing something (maybe I am too used to feta with my avo). I also ordered an iced soy latte (soy milk, ice, coffee) which was a bit disappointing. The soy mustn't have been shaken properly before being poured into the coffee (or is it the brand?) because there were clumps of solidified soy milk floating in it. It turned me off enough to drink half and stop when a skin of soy milk was revealed on the bottom. I know soy is difficult to manage sometimes, but, coming from a barista, this is avoidable!I ordered the juice to replace my coffee with and it was lovely! My only complaint was that it wan't very cold (pop some ice blocks in!) I am sure if I would have asked, they would have given me ice though, so no biggie.
I would like to see more vegetarian/vegan options on the menu. There wasn't much there. Vegetarian is pretty easy and is expected at cafes these days! The menu said "no changes to meals" so I assume you're not vegan friendly?Overall, the staff were definitely attentive and I will likely be back for more.
Came in for brunch without any preconceived ideas. The location is ideal with a huge window overlooking the station. Very relaxed modern environment, with hanging plants although fake don't look outdated. Children are welcome by the friendly staff, that are happy to engage with them providing pencils and paper to occupy their minds. Great coffee, the cake was splendid and service with a smile 🍩😄☕️
Had the special which was Mediterranean lamb sliders with sweet potato chips. So delicious loved my dish.
My friend had the eggs benny which was nice however eggs were overdone.
Would still go back to try more on their menu.

Comfortable bright open space, easy-going staff, colourful and well presented food. The menu here is unique in that every item (aside from the toast) has its own interesting and delicious twist. I must return soon to try their other dishes.
Surprising cafe that just gets it right. Plenty of options for everyone, but who can go past peanut butter and jelly waffles! A winner, indeed. Even having a gnocchi on the menu (also tasty!) seems to cater to all tastes, without feeling like its trying to be a jack of all trades. Coffee was good, not the best I've ever had, but these days, we are so coffee conscious! Service was friendly and warm. Will be back for more!
Great looking cafe! Great vibes! So vibrant! Staff and so lovely and inviting! Coffee was great! Menu had a great selection of unique foods! Food was so well presented! Food tasted as good as it looked!
Been here heaps of times it's one of my only regular brunch spots. Food is always on point and the service and coffee are awesome. Tip: the milkshake specials are always crazy gooodd!
Yummo! Love this joint in the bustling section of Highett. There's so many great options on the menu, you really do need to come again and again to make your way through the menu.
The vibe and decor is relaxing and the service friendly. If you're not sure if you should make the trek to check out The Diplomat, then take my advice and give it a shot. My favourite dish so far has to be the broccoli, pea and spring onion fritters
Great vibes at this bustling Highett hot spot! Light, bright and modern feel! Great selection of items on the menu including all the classic breakfasts with a twist! The food was healthy, fresh, full of flavour and presented exceptionally! Was so hard to choose after seeing all the dishes come out of the open kitchen, they all looked so 'mouth-wateringly' good! Will definitely have to return and try a few more!
You will find very friendly and accom dating staff at The Diplomat Cafe in Highett! They were very easy going and were able to find a big table for my friend and her pram. I had the fritters with bacon and a poached egg, it was good, and all my friends meals looked awesome too!!
Best customer service of any cafe Iv been to with an epic menu to boot. Wish there were more like it. The chicken superfood salad is a must, along with the delicious waffles and a perfectly brewed chai. Very family friendly with good size kids meals at a reasonable price.
One of so many cafes that are spreading the inner city vibe to the burbs, Diplomat Cafe has a lot going for it. With arguably the best coffee on board (from roasters Omar and the Marvellous Coffee Bird, in Gardenvale), there was only 3 questions that were on my mind when I visited:. Could they do those magnificent beans justice?
Great service, kids pancakes were fantastic (hubby stole some off the plate). Benedict was yum and the hollandaise was spot on however the "crackle" is more a crumb than a nice piece of crunchy crackle but none the less delicious. Sweet potato rosti was nice however lacked crunch as it was really thick so the texture was very mushy and the jalapeño hollandaise lacked any heat or jalapeño flavour. Will be back to try something else next time, still worth the visit.
Lovely atmosphere - loved the décor. I didn't rate it higher because I expected slightly more from the food.. I got the avo smash - felt it was lacking something compared to other times I have had avo meals out.. Otherwise happy
The service here is absolutely extraordinary. Everyone is so friendly and polite could not recommend here enough.
The food was delicious and very fast even though they were busy.
Beautiful cafe near the train station with super friendly staff and cool interior - much like a indoor greenhouse. Coffees well done, food delish. We had the broccoli n pea fritters with hollandaise and pork hock and a potato fritter and smoked trout, both meals with perfectly poached eggs.
It's a lovely cafe with excellent service
Staffs were thoughtful that I felt welcomed
The waffle was delicious but I can't have too much it's too fat
The wild mushroom was a bit oily still tasty. Well.. Coffee was under extracted in my own opinion as different people may have various preference about it
Wow, great food... Way to busy but top quality and fantastic service.. Brunch there anytime.... Had the chicken sandwich and fresh juice as well as a good coffee. All round very good
An up-market cafe serving good coffee. I had the orange and fennel fruit toast , which was spot on. Modern, spacious and bright decor, and attentive, friendly service.
Very popular cafe nearby. We came around 12 and been seated very quickly. Waitress are nice and easy going, food is so good! The special dish really made my day. We also tried French Toast which has very yummy source on top, probably the best traditional one that I have tried.
This place kickstarted the Highett transformation. Gorgeous interior and friendly staff. Breakfast and lunch items are quality and yum! Gorgeous rotating shake menu. I love everything about this place except the coffee. The baristas know their stuff but it's the bean they use that I just don't like the taste of. Such a shame!!!
Midday on a Saturday was very busy here, with tables full and half a dozen people waiting for one. I had picked a challenging time to put hanger to the test.
Tactful ushering of customers to tables, friendly staff, service times that were fantastic and food that was superb - you really are spoilt here.
Arriving quite hangry, I was searching for a meal that would satisfy the hunger of the morning, and keep that beast tamed into the afternoon.
The answer - pork belly bao.
The sweetness of hoi sin glaze, the sharp tang of red chilli and the melting pot of flavour within that juicy pork sat perfectly atop a thick, soft bao.
Four of these went down a treat. Coffee was great as well.
It's one of those places you walk out of with that smile that only the diplomat can out on your face.
Well done guys, I'll be back soon.
Okay, only been once so far, but very excited about the menu; I love it when you can't decide what you want because everything looks so good; and our orders (taken and served efficiently) didn't disappoint. Had the mushroom, chorizo, poached eggs on melt, and partner had the porridge; both excellent (mushroom dish probably the stand-out). My only negatives; a tad noisy; ok can deal with it, but a little louder than comfortable; and my coffee was a little bitter ..and hate to say.. tasted a little burned? Perhaps it was the blend or just me; but that was the only thing I could really fault. Still can't wait to go back and try out more of the menu. Couldn't help staring at tables nearby and thinking.. must try that next time..
We had the breakfast burritos, a milkshake and a tea and everything was amazing! The burritos were huge and full of flavour, the milkshake was delicious and the tea was perfect.
Thank you for having us, best breakfast we've had in Melbourne on our stay ☺️
A beautiful cafe is here.
The atmosphere is perfect, food and coffee are good as well!
Must visiting!
Wasn’t too bad, the staff were super friendly which was soo lovely. The hash browns weren’t cooked that well but the chorizo was the best I have had in a long time! Will be back for that
Diplomat is consistently good quality. Kimmy makes the best coffee in highett and Lee always remembers your order/says hello. They value their regular customers. Try the porridge or burrito.
Great food. A little wait for attention due to low waiter service and the floor manager could help a little more with customer service but for all that, the vibe was good and food great.
