Always get takeaway from this place all the way back since they were on William st. Nasi Campur and the spicy coconut fish fillet are the best.

Don't let the awful decor, uncomfortable chairs put you off. The food is amazing and authentic. We were greeted and served by the charming owner. The beef Rendang and the Satay were awesome! A real gem without the price-tag.

Sparrow's service kicks it up a notch as the loveable owner is eager to please and make customers laugh. The rendang is worthy of the raves, but the grilled chicken was the best pick. The fried chicken, my partner's pick was tasty, and the chicken mi goreng was just okay. Dishes are very cheap so its worth choosing a few or sharing with a crew to find the best dishes. There's little space to eat in so choose your time or order takeaway, allowing for a wait.
The atmosphere was comfy, it feels like home. The workers were friendly, and one of them was really nice and even gave us a discount cause it was our first time! We sang a happy birthday for this one customer's bday, it was so cute and lovely. The food was nice! Esp the rendang, it reminds me of the one I had in Indo, def recommended for Indonesians who misses food from back home

I love this cafe/restaurant and have been visiting for years. I still remember one birthday when the whole restaurant sang happy birthday to me! The new location is much smaller than the old, maybe that's why there's been limited singing since then. The food is still great though.

It may not look like much but holy moly, this place is fantastic! The owner is so over animated and friendly, you can't help but fall in love with him. The food is honest, packed full of flavour and so well priced you will consider McDonalds to be a ridiculously expensive option in comparison. It is cash only, but it isn't an issue if you know that in advance ;-)

Such a great little restaurant! This time we went they were insanely busy! Luckily we had booked (we've been a few times ) so we sat. The place was packed, there were a line of ppl wanting to order or pick up phone order and place orders and turned out they were 3 staff short. Some people started walking out but the owner ran after them and brought them back, cooking was stopped, kitchen staff were told to take orders and calm was restored. This is when you know the manager is the owner and cares about customer service! He even got the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday to a little girl! We got our orders pretty quickly after that. We ordered 4 starters (martabak, kroket, kropok & ikan bilis) all very delicious and 3 mains (mee goreng, rendang and fried chicken in coconut sauce) and rice. The rendang and the mee goreng were our favorite. The chicken not so much but it was a matter of taste rather than the dish which was generous, perfectly cooked and $8! W a drink total came to $56 (which is an awesome value esp given how generous the servings were and we were taking home leftovers!) But the owner very generously rounded it down to $50! Seriously cant recommend this place enough! Service was also awesome and is byo.

Have been wanting to try this place for months and finally got out there today for lunch. The restauranat6qas about half full, and we were greeted by the most bubbly friendly owner I've met in a long time.
The menu was extensive and the prices so reasonable. We opted for the beef rendang and chicken noodles. WOW is all i can say, the beef was so tender and flavoursome and so too were the noodles.
The restaurant itself is small and basic, but that only adds to the charm.
We will be back and definitely recommend this place to everyone.

Got takeaway from here - quick turnaround time! Lady on the phone was able to recommend dishes for me to try. Beef rendang came in a small round takeaway container but was ok portion for the price - really tasty smokey flavour. Fish in the spicy capsicum sauce was delicious. Didn't expect the fish to be fried but the sauce was really tasty, not too spicy. Gado gado came with a generous amount of peanut sauce. Really delicious all mixed with rice. The owner gave us $2 off our order as it was our first time but we also noticed he was extremely friendly and gave small discounts to many others. Food really tasted homemade, like your Aunty made it or something! Will be returning :)
Love this place! Went here for the first time last night with a mate. The owner greeted us (mocked us I should say- he is hilarious!) as we entered, it's such a small cosy restaurant, nothing flash, but somehow feels like you are eating in their home. The owner comes and chats to everyone and tells you about the dishes on offer. We had martabak to start (delicious) and I had the beef rendang for main. Generous portions and the beef was so succulent and tender. The best part about this place- it's so cheap! The owner even gave me 10% off for it being my first visit! Warning- cash only, however the mini mart next door gives cash back :) I'm definitely coming here again.....and again.....
To be honest I rarely go to Indonesian restaurant coz there are no good Indonesian in Brisbane and I do think I cook better Indonesian than most restaurant. So yeah was a bit doubtful when my friend ask me to have dinner here. But my first experience having an Indonesian food for dinner in perth was actually pleasant.
Their food are really nice and i can taste the authenticity. Love the grilled fish, reminds me of a place I use to go at Jakarta.

I prefer spicier Indonesian food than the ones from Sparrow, however, it is understandable that most Western palates enjoy the current spiciness level in Sparrow's food.

1. Ayam Bali - Chicken Fillet in Thick Balinese Curry Sauce, 3.5/5.0. Nice. Was expecting the curry to be spicier. I much prefer Ayam Bali in Batavia Corner, Vic Park.
2. Terong Balado - Egg Plant in Spicy Red Capsicum and Chilli Sauce, 3.0/5.0, OK. Don't like the sauce, was expecting it to be spicier.
3. Perkedel - Potatoes and Beef Cake, 3.5/5.0, Nice, was wishing that the beef inside the cake is chunkier.
4. Ikan Bilis and Peanut, 3.5/5.0. Nice, Prefer the one from Batavia Corner, more flavourful, spicier, sweeter.
The last time I visited this restaurant was 13 years ago when it was still at William street. The food was amazing and even better than before. It's a cozy environment and the owner makes the service even better. Thumbs up for anyone and please do give this place a go.
Love this place, you probably wouldn't go if you didn't know it or have a recommendation but I thoroughly recommend it. We had a Nasi Goreng and a beef rendang and they were both awesome.

The food is great and prices are unreal for a Highgate location. The owner is a friendly chap who remembers all the regulars. The rendang and Ayam Bali are excellent choices for first timers giving this place a go.

The food is soooo good and the owner is a lovely lovely man with a great sense of humor. We ordered a ton of food to the point where the owner said I'm not going to let you order this. It's too much food! And he was right and still came to something like $55 for the both of us together and we have lunch for next day! Recommend booking as place was packed. Even so they were very accommodating. Cant recommend this.place highly enough! Oh and make sure u ordere martabak. Soo good!

My family and I have been religiously coming here for the past 7 years (regulars since their old restaurant in Northbridge). Shows how much we love their food! This restaurant is one of the reasons that convinced my family and I to go travel in Indonesia. Very authentic and delicious to the max. Beef rendang and Ikan Bakar are highly recommended! The boss is basically our friend now :) A very very friendly and funny guy.

This place must be a favourite of a lot of other people as well as there are always large crowds dining in and buying take-away every day and night they are open!
Small in size, but big in heart. Great for lunch or a takeaway, as you'll be pressed to get a seat there ...its so popular. Beef Rendang is the best.
Sparrow offers extremely affordable and mostly very well flavoured dishes. The owner is friendly and accommodating and the experience was a bit like going to a friend's place to eat. Each dish ($7-9) is a small portion (I can easily eat two dishes alone), that allows for a good variety to be sampled. They make one the best beef rendangs I've had in Perth. Only downside is that they cater to a western palate, with some dishes being far too sweet (such as the satay) for my tastes, which is a great shame.

CHEAP AND UTTERLY ENAK (DELICIOUS)
Safe to say this place is one of my favourites for scrumptious and cheap Indonesian food. If you are dining in, make sure you ring up well in advance due to its popularity and limited amount of tables (as the restaurant is extremely squishy), and if choosing take-away make sure you aren't extremely hungry because you'll be waiting around 30 to 40 minutes before you get your meals. Another tip is to check your order before you leave because they often forget a dish. If this is your first time and want to try dishes packed with good ol' fashioned Indonesian flavours, I would definitely recommend the Rendang, Nasi Kuning, Ayam Bali and the Sambal Tahu Telor.
Really friendly owner, and food is nice and very cheap for big portions.
My only criticism would be that the food is cooked more to western tastebuds, so not always 100% authentic taste like I got in Indonesia, so some things are more sweet and less spicy. But its really great value and cheap.

So so cheap! Their mee goreng is pretty good, I come here pretty often just for that. I'd heard that the beef rendang was good too, but when I finally tried it, it was super bland and gross. The beef was tough and unpleasant to eat. Will stick to mee goreng.

Sparrow will not impress from the outside, neither will it with its drapey walls and squashed interior that probably needs a good scrub, but the food is authentic, the service is honest and probably the best you'll ever get in Perth from the owner himself. Perth needs to learn how to support local joints like this and keep them alive as these are the ones that support our everyday meals.

An old favourite in Perth, Sparrow Indonesian has been popular for their food and prices which are value for money. The restaurant may be small but it’s bursting with character from the bubbly and friendly owner. We had four dishes to share for the night. First up is the Ayam Bali ($7.70) with thick balinese sauce. I actually enjoyed this dish. The chicken was tender and cooked perfectly, complementing well with the flavoursome sauce full of spices. Next up is the Gulai Udang ($9) which comprises of prawns in spicy coconut sauce. Like the Ayam Bali, the spicy coconut sauce is delicious with a subtle hint of spice and freshness from the prawns.
Ikan Balado. The fish had sweet and tender flesh with crisp skin in a beautifully fresh sauce.
Hidden Gem. We have lived in the area for 35 years and have driven past this place on an almost daily basis. Seemed to be always busy-a good sign and kept saying, we have to try it sometime. Well, 'sometime' was tonight and l am so glad we stopped in for a meal. The owner greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home. He has a wicked sense of humour too. Helped us with our menu decisions with the patience of a saint. Being our first time, we were given a 10% discount...a bonus :) The food came out promptly and was absolutely delicious. Semur Daging (stewed beef with egg, potato and carrot)...beef was so tender...the Mie Goreng was very flavoursome, a fried chicken dish that l can't remember the name of now....so many dishes on the menu. We will be back to try them all l think...can see this becoming a regular favourite place to eat!! We walked out with very full tummies and our only regret....that we had not tried it sooner.
Homemade Indonesian to satisfy the cravings.... Went into this little cafe and instantly felt so welcomed and oddly at home. The service was more like being over at a family friends house for dinner. The price does not reflect the portions that were given, I was expecting a small portion but received a good sized portion! The peanut sauce was a little too creamy but still so delicious. I kept hearing Rendung for orders on the phone, definately will try that. Overall, you cant compete with the price and the service. This little gem brings customer service and reasonable prices into a city that barely has both. Well Done!

I've always thought that Sparrow's way of serving was very clever. Instead of the oversized $18 serves of curry, Sparrow gives small serves for less than half the price. This allows for a table full of dishes to be sampled, even a table of only two people can still order a few things and not waste. The entrées serve as excellent side dishes also.

Fantastic dining experience! Truly impeccable service that I cannot flaw. We ordered three dishes between two of us which tasted amazing and for a grand total of $27 (inc. drinks). The owner is so friendly and welcoming. If it's your first time you get a 10% discount on your meal. We also got given a free promotional dessert to take home and try. Just beware that they don't have eftpos so you will need to take out cash beforehand.

It's cosy, bubbly atmosphere won me over the minute I walked through the door, but that might be because the owner called me Tom Cruise as well. Our new favourite restaurant! I'm a mad lover of Indonesian food and was excited to try their gado gado. The satay sticks, gado gado and rissoles were amazing. We got one main each, two entrees and two drinks for under $30. Insane for Perth! Lovely owner. Lovely down to earth hospitality. Very loud inside bit in a nice homey atmosphere. Me and my partner take our hats off to these guys. Will see you again soon! Tip: book a table on a Friday night, we did, the place was full and all the walkins were turned away.

An Outstanding NIght :D. Dined in on 16/1/14 with my other half - Ordered the Beef Rendang, Ayam Chicken Balinese Curry Chicken and the Coconut Prawns Dishes. All dishes were of exceptional quality, excellent value, substantial serving sized meals. The Yellow Coconut Rice complemented all the dishes beautifully. The meal totalled $33, with no charge for corkage. (The Owner offers a wonderful 10 percent discount for first time patrons). The Owner (and family) were extraordinarily and exceptionally welcoming and friendly, and provided brilliant clientele service. We will definitely be returning very soon to try the other dishes on the menu. Thank you very, very much for an outstanding night out.

Soarrow Indonesia now only serve take away Indonesian food. Rendang is very good, dry fish balado with peanuts taste fantastic, feels like at home.
