Review Astor Grill - Hobart

Clayton Hobbs
My wife and I visited the Astor Grill last night for about the 3rd time and as usual our expectations were exceeded. The quality of the steak, the friendliness of the staff, and the over all dining experience was spectacular. Worth every cent and highly recommended if you value high-quality local produce and excellent customer service.

Beautiful food and genuine service. A must-do when you’re in Tassie. The steak tartare was phenomenal, I think any foodie would be ecstatic to receive it. The flavours were superbly balanced, but still delightfully explosive on the palate. I was a bit apprehensive at the prospect of eating raw meat AND raw egg yolk, but the chefs finesse this meal so well that you don’t even think about it whilst eating. I was left wanting more and cannot wait to be back to eat it. The ‘share plate for two; robbins island wagyu rum, marble 7+’ was nice and filling, and bang for your back at $116 as it came with two sides and was perfect for sharing. Definitely a unique take on steak which I was delighted to graze throughout the evening. Service was warm and genuine. Very happy.

Service was good (David was very friendly and helpful) and food was excellent. Only comment is that it may be good for the management to let the staff sample their food so that they can recommend to their patrons. Portions were a good size. We had The Steak, vegetables and pomme frites, finished with a choice of 2 types of cheese and a bottle of red wine. A great dinner that was quite reasonably priced. Recommended to try!

Booking was easy, seating was smooth, food was decent (I liked the wallaby), prices were acceptable, payment was easy. Decent experience.

Definitely one of Hobart's best fine dining restaurants specialising in prime steak menu. Recommend the share plate Robins Island Wagu

Never had a bad meal here! The food is exceptional, as is the service. Arguably the best steak in Hobart & the wallaby is fantastic too! Great for lunch as they are not usually too busy, if you're wanting dinner you'd better book ahead especially on weekends or during peak periods. Highly recommend!

Lovely food and service celebrating my Dad’s Birthday. We felt we must try this classic Hobart Restaurant! We were somewhat skeptical about bringing 2 young and fussy kids but they couldn’t have been better looked after. Extremely accommodating waiters, it didn’t matter who came around, all were pleasant and helpful. The various steaks and meats were all extremely well cooked and delicious and we finished off with some desserts which were also Yum! A wonderful evening, will be back!

The beautiful ambience of this place won me over immediately. The meals were cooked to perfection and the deserts were delicious. Achieved a great balance between chef techniques and a homely feel to their meals. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

The restaurant was good in accomodating a last minute booking. We the eye fillet and the risotto. The steak was good and cooked well. Risotto was nice.
Decor is a little old and the wine list was a little ordinary. But all in all, not bad.

This was a great little find on a recent overnight business trip to Hobart. It was cold and rainy, and I stumbled on the Astor just a short walk from my hotel. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and more than happy to accomodate. The menu was ample, providing a good selection of dishes, but not overcrowded, and there was obviously an emphasis on local ingredients and steak. Same goes for the wine list. I had an appetiser of grilled octopus, and my scotch fillet came out cooked perfectly. Throughout the meal, the staff were attentive, but not in-your-face-all-the-time, and were knowledgeable about the menu and drinks list. The restaurant itself was warm, quiet and cozy, perfect for a cool night, but would also be nice on a warm summer evening. There were a few couples and small groups, as well as a few other single diners (who appeared to be people on business like myself). I would definitely recommend the Astor for a relaxing dinner.

Open Monday - which in Hobart is good. Good escape from the heavy rain outside. Steak selection looks extensive (next time). A number of local fish dishes. Wine list appeared good but limited by the glass. Service improved over the evening. Had a well presented Atlantic salmon and surprisingly good olives. Worth a second try.

After a long day trip on a Saturday, we arrived back to our accommodation on Macquarie Street tired and just needed somewhere close to eat. We were glad that Astor Grill still had seats when we showed up without booking. This busy restaurant had a warm and welcoming vibe to it, with friendly and attentive staff.

As we didn’t feel like eating steaks on the night, we went for other proteins on the menu. We had two Entrée dishes, one Main dish and one Dessert to share.

First Entrée was Grilled Farm Quail with smoky roasted Tomatoes, Ligurian Olives, Mint and Buffalo Fetta. The hero of the dish, the quail, was tender and full of flavour. All the other elements of the dish complimented each other really well too. Our only issue was, we couldn’t get enough of the quail because it was so good. I could probably eat another 5 more. Price: AUD$21.50.

The second Entrée we had was Linguine with Garlic Prawns in Chilli Oil, Tomato Rocket, Lemon and shaved Grana. The garlic prawns tasted fresh and mildly spicy. The whole dish was very pleasant to eat and again, I wish there were more of the prawns on the plate because they were delicious. I probably would be happy to get double the size of this as a Main. Price: AUD$19.50.

For Main, we had the Tasmanian Wallaby fillets with Spring Onion Mash, Beetroot, Red Wine and Native Pepperberry Sauce. The wallaby fillets were cooked to perfection as the meat was still pink in the middle and the texture was nice and not tough to chew at all. I like the taste. It’s a nice alternative to steak. And when you are in Tasmania, why not give it a go? The spring onion mash was smooth and together with the sauce were just the perfect combination with the wallaby fillets. Price $35.50.

We decided to try the dessert on their Special Menu, which is Cold Set Lime Soufflé with Apple Sorbet, Lime Zest and Biscuit Crumbs. This was a beautiful dish with an understated presentation and name. Both the soufflé and sorbet were really light, smooth and refreshing and the lime zest was a great touch. This dessert was a great way to finish our meal, after all the strong flavours and meat. I’d recommend order it again if I come here, as you don’t often see lime soufflé in restaurants. Price: AUD$13.50.

Overall, we enjoyed everything we ordered. Price is slightly on the expensive side for the serving size otherwise it would have been perfect. The restaurant does get a bit busy on weekend evenings so booking is recommended if you plan to visit. It seemed to be a popular venue for the locals as we saw the manager greeting some regular customers on the night.

Took the missus and friends to the Astor Grill for an Anniversary dinner last night
I have been a long time patron of the Astor Grill ( except for that period where they dropped the ball ) it appears that the crowds have returned as it was a busy Saturday night, so much so that we were seated in the secondary dining room, apart from that grating on my nerves, the evening was quite enjoyable. We men had the entree of grilled octopus and it was well received, the mains chosen were the
signature dish ( Steak Astor ) I would have liked more ! The missus had the Eye fillet scallopini that tasted terrific but also would have liked more, the dinner finished with shared deserts, also very nice. The pacing of the service was spot on with
the wait staff engaging without going overboard. The only criticism that I could level would be the cost of the drinks however it should be mentioned that the Astor does have an extensive drinks list that should cater for most tastes
All in all it was professional dining experience that only just missed top marks, will definitely return

Pretty Good. It's nice, but last time we were in Tassy we went to The Black Cow in Launceston and in comparison it does really come close to matching up. We did some research and found that most thought this to be Hobart ' s best steak.
It's good, but not great. Tough act to follow admittedly. There was nothing wrong, but nothing blew us away.

Great food, poor service. Upon arrival at the Astor Grill we were warmly welcomed. Our entree and main meals were ordered and received promptly. They were delicious! While we had not yet ordered any drinks we waited patiently while our water was continually topped up by other wait staff. Our plates were taken away and we anxiously awaited to deserts menu we had seen other tables enjoying. Unfortunately we had been forgotten about. We waited for 40 minutes, other tables were receiving great service, drinks, and deserts of course! The restaurant began to clear and due to the awkwardness 50 minutes after we finished our main meals we too decided to leave. At payment, the host cheekily pointed out a tip option on the eftpos machine. My response I think shocked him, I declined due to not receiving good service. His response was "we should have hailed down staff!" Im sorry but when you claim to be a high class restaurant, with table service and charge accordingly why should the patrons request service? $150 later, no drinks or deserts two unhappy patrons left the restaurant. Astor Grill, the food we received was amazing but your service leaves a lot to be desired. We will not be returning anytime soon!

This was very disappointing for what we paid. We expected a lot better as we were expecting a fine dining experience. Service was excellent however steak was appalling, it lacked in taste and the sauce was watery and tasteless, the vegetables which accompanied the steak were ok. We had oysters to start which were mediocre however our wine and Pannacotta were enjoyable. Overall a disappointing dinning experience on our holiday in Tasmania.

Enjoyable experience. Went to Astor Grill last night while holidaying in Hobart. Very pleased with our experience. Oysters were excellent, steaks were cooked as ordered, presented very well and good quality. The place is pleasant with efficient, courteous, friendly staff.

We really enjoyed our meal, although the restaurant was very busy. Our waitress was attentive and the service great. When our meal was delayed, the staff took the time to let us know and explained why. We had divine oysters with salmon gravlax. Definitely up there with 'best ever oysters'. The Cape Grim eye fillet was cooked to perfection and the Stilton sauce delicious. The Blue Eye trevalla was also a high standard dish. A perfect dining experience. Thank you.

We had the best meal and time. The food. The staff. The atmosphere. All faultless. One of the best dining experience of our lives. A most memorable anniversary dinner. Thank you to everyone at Astor Grill. You made our night.
