Review Tandoor & Curry House - Hobart

Calvin Kodian
Oh are they delicious. I have to admit, this is probably one of the best Indian food I have ever tasted in Hobart. Tandoor n Curry house is on another level and their food quality and taste are commendable. Bombay beef is my favourite, it’s a mildly marinated perfectly cooked curry that really melts in your mouth. Well done Tandoor and Curry house.

By far the nicest indian food I've had in Australia. We got the banquet for 2 and it was amazing and was a huge portion. Great value for money at $64 for the two of us. BYO as well which was a bonus. Would highly recommend

I asked for a table for 1 at 6.15pm, I was told no. I asked for an explanation and was informed the restaurant was booked out. I counted over 40 vacant seats over at least a dozen tables, unless all bookings were coming within the next 45 minutes this was bad form. The manager was quite rude in her explanation.

This place serves the most delicious Indian food you in Australia. The Makkhan chicken was made with chicken marinated with tandoori spices cooked to perfection and then tossed in a mellow sweet spicy tomato base. The dal tadka was spectacular and reminded of my mother’s cooking. The garlic naan were the best we ever had, fluffy and crispy at the same time. This dishes are well priced and the staff is very humble. Compliments to the chef for such amazing flavours. We will definitely be returning.

My fiance and I are from NSW and were visiting a friend here in Tassie. We thought we'd give some indian a go and googled the best indian restaurant in Hobart - and based on the reviews, this place did not disappoint! Super delicious and authentic food and friendly staff! Would definitely recommend.

Delicious dinner. We ate Bombay beef and lamb Rogan Josh. Served with complimentary rice. Asked for a little more rice just to finish off the meal. Also ate some devine garlic naan! Was absolutely lovely.

Best Indian restaurant in Hobart. I have tasted in 3 Indian restaurant with "Authentic" in their name. However, this is only restaurant tasted Authentic Indian.

Absolutely amazing, always delicious and wonderful service! Best Indian cuisine in Tasmania!

It is somewhat tricky to find a place that serves Indian cuisine without compromising on the authenticity of the recipes. I understand how some places have to 'adjust' the taste of their dishes according to local palates, and I certainly don't blame them for ensuring a steady business. But that usually renders the curries too sweet and they taste nothing like the fare back home in India. Tandoor and Curry House surprises you pleasantly in this aspect. The flavors are original and traditional in every sense, no funny fusion going on here. Yet the locals seem to love it. They have marked the spice level (1 to 4) of all their dishes on the menu and I can see how this helps patrons who are not familiar with Indian cuisine. All in all, full marks to the food and service. Have eaten here couple of times and would keep returning.

Absolutely the best Indian food I have ever eaten. Don't let the exterior fool you. This place is a gem.

Amazing food and wonderful service for very good prices . has even converted my mum who 'doesn't do spice'! will certainly be back any time I'm in Hobart ! Can't recommend this restaurant highly enough

I NEEDED Malai Kofta tonight and this place still does the best in town. Great Service too.

Best place to have indian food at Hobart TAS. The rice is really awesome with awesome choice of curries.
Jennie Berliner
The best Indian meal we have had in years. Fresh & tasty, the rice was soft & fluffy. The little pudding was amazing!
Karen Baker
Always superb meal and service. Never eat Indian food anywhere else, that would make me feel unfaithful Besides that, no interest in eating Indian food elsewhere.

Superb naan and roti's. Curry's were fine, not too oily, but mellow rather than really flavoursome and exciting. I judge a restaurant by wondering if the chef would be happy to prepare these dishes for their mothers. In this case I think they probably would, but I think they would probably prefer to spend a bit more time and care and make the dishes special. So not bad, not great, but decent food and great breads.

Best Indian food in Hobart, exceptional service and always a pleasant experience. My favourite restaurant by far, went last night for my Birthday and it was busy (as it always has been the half dozen times I have eaten here) yet food is always brought out within 10-15 minutes. Love it.
Luciano Lucas
exceptional food. warm and hospitable service. always a sign of confidence when people from that region are dining in as well. two lovely indian ladies dressed in their traditional style was great to see. definitely an asset to hobarts restaurant scene.

Loved it only been twice once about 15 years ago and Monday night the food is just as good now as it was all those years ago,Live in North Queensland, don’t get down to Hobart very often.

Can't get enough of this place fantastic food , great service

The best chicken korma curry I've had, we went there twice and recommend everyone to go and try it.
Ian Mead
We loved every bite of everything that we ordered, it was an absolute treat & the staff were very gracious.

Best Indian food I've had in a long time. Great service, great prices. Not having coffee was a slight drawback, however that did not detract from a delightful dining experience.
Christian Willer
Very good service and food! Hats of for naan and butter chicken :)

Customer service minus - no welcome. No smile or sign of happiness by seeing customer. Very rude staff who don’t like to work and not seeing any sense of politeness when serving or talking to customers. After making all complaints no discount on final invoice or sign of apologies.

Look and feel - double minus
Very old and poor building, zero renovation or care towards handle and doorythat you touch. Chairs and tables are very old and poorly placed. Cut my finger while opening door handle from inside on time of exit. Owner Please spend some money that you are making by robbing your customers

Quality of food - Poor triple minus

Orde Dal tadka. They server watery black dal.
Ordered Kadahi Paneer. Very dull and blend taste. I am sure even Aussie will think this is not a taste of India. Very watery. Malai Kofta very blend and no taste in it. Where is that creamy and tasty gravy you look for in malai Kofta. Rice - old rice served and we can feel it by texture and chunk of rice we found in it. Please check photos. I told counter girl that please do not serve such a old rice to at least Indian who can easily judge it that it’s not fresh. Their medium and large dishes have only difference in price but in terms size they are same. Check photos.

Price - Too much expensive. I hv eaten in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and GoldCoast but this restaurant is one of the worst quality food with higher end price. If you have been to Indian restaurant think about price of Roti. Generally it’s $3-$3.50 but they are serving it for $5. Are you serious. What a good tactic to rob your customers by high price and lower amount of quantity. Their large dish size is big joke.

Overall Worst Experience. We been their due to high ratings and good review in Zomato and TripAdvisor but seriously if you are food lover and looking for good Indian food please by all means AVOID this restaurant.

Their $32 a head banquet gave good value for money and tasty Indian food. Delicious naan. My only criticism is that our table was next to the old fireplace (not in use) by the stairs, and every time a staff member bounced their way through quickly, our table shook. :-(

Popped in for dinner greeted by very friendly staff on arrival. Chose the special buffet and picked the following:- mixes entree, beef vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, matar paneer sabzi, daal tadka, garlic naan with ice cream to finish. The dishes are fabulous, full of flavor and throughly enjoyable and I can't fault the service at all. Recommended if you're ever visiting.
Avinash Rajah
Friendly staff. Food was served in record time. But thought the rice was a little dry. Although the food was flavoursome. The Kashmiri naan was not what I expected with a sweet coconut filling. However it was still cooked well. I would try the plain naan or garlic naan instead.

I visited the place , just so that I could have some Indian beer and then take a walk until my late night dinner...

Had 2 kingfisher beers, but then was told that I can't pay and leave just for having the Beer... I need to have Food as well... Damn a nice way to rip off the people with such bizzare policies... End of the Day ... Food tasted horrible and costed twice as much as Little India located about 50 meters from this place...

Beware of this place... And Stay Away ... They're gonna rip you off...

Being a self confessed Indian cuisine snob, I'm delighted to say that this place is awesome. Authentic Indian cuisine and charming Indian hospitality. Quite a basic, non-fuss fit out, but that's part of the charm I reckon.

Fantastic Indian. Our family has Indian wherever we go and this is right up there with the best that we have ever eaten.

Large fluffy Naans, beautiful curries and great service.

Don't let the exterior put you off - behind the doors is a 5 star Indian restaurant. We will be back before we leave Hobart.
Andrew
Authentic indian food and the restaurant is really cozy. Wait can be long because good food truly comes with patience (I believe this is because they take time to cook in the tandoor and on-demand). Try their Makhan chicken - fantastic!

Absolutely loved this place. Ordered the special
Banquet with my girlfriend and man do they give you a lot of food for 32 bucks p/person. It wasn't just the bang-for-buck-ness that is worth raving about but also the quality of the food! One of the best butter chickens and garlic naans I've had in Australia so far. Would definitely be back if ever in Hobart again

Original Indian food with awesome taste though service was slightly delayed. Loved their curries, complimentary saffron rice and Gulab jamun ice cream.

Some of the best Indian food I have ever eaten. The service was great and the atmosphere was warming. We ordered 2 curries and 2 naan breads. The food was served quality and was hot. The only complaint would be they didn't have the wine my wife ordered and the alternate wasn't as good. Serving sizes were massive and well priced!!!
Jumping Jack
I eat a lot of Indian food. This was up there with the worst. The 1.5 star is for service only (our young waiter was friendly and smiled a lot). The restaurant was loud and really warm, we were both sweating. Paneer was bland, "hot" was ordered but it was very mild, bread was terrible. This was the only time I have never finished a dish.

Absolutely awesome....
Nothing else can be said. Authentic. Great service. A must eat. Full recommend!!! Cool style, non pretentious... Home style

Wasn't as good as we expected after reading other reviews. Was a Thursday night so reasonably quiet, staff were pleasant and attentive. Atmosphere was cold as we were placed in an area on our own. Decor a bit dated and drab. Food was above reasonable but not the best we've had. Having said that the portion sizes were larger than usual and the food was flavoursome. 6.5/10

Divine!. Stayed around the corner from this place and every time we walked past we could smell the tandoor breads... Ate here on our last night, and damn! Would have eaten here every night if we could have.

Naan was fluffy, crispy, smokey and delicious. The dal was amazing. Makhani chicken was smokey and cooked in the tandoor before being finished in the sauce. Friendly service.

Would definitely come back next time we're in town!!

Wonderfull food! Great attention. Clean!

The food and service where absolutely fantastic! Ordered garlic naan, mixed entre, daal and samosas. Also taita and curry which where equally fantastic. The staff where all smiling and made you feel very welcome.

Best Indian I've had. My wife & I love Indian food

We have eaten Indian food across Europe and Australia and rate this as one of the best restaurants for fine dining of Indian cuisine. If you come to Hobart and love Indian food this is a must.
Alex Mason
Very poor, interior was very outdated with lime green walls, toilets very dirty, food was priced between $13-$24 per curry. We had 4 different Curries all were disapointing, what they called butter chicken tastes like tomato sauce with chilli, the lamb had a funny taste (we think it may have been goat) staff were okay but took a long time for food to come out, all in all Id recommend little India down the street, cheaper and tastier. Mainly focus on take outs but better quality
Alexandra Dong
Wow. Their mango ice cream is to die for...
Daryl Brett
Wow.... From the moment you walk in the door its authentic dining...

BEAUTIFUL :). Beautifully cooked curry , great nann ,nice condiments, good service , nice decor , worth it everytime

THE BEST Indian food I've ever had in my life. No exaggeration. Fast, friendly service and tasty meals. We had chicken korma, two types of naan and mango and vanilla lassies and it was all served ultra fast and with a smile. I will go back to Hobart again purely to eat here again.

Best naan I have ever had. My partner and I came in just from the smell outside, was not disappointed the samosas were exceptional and the service warm and friendly. Great wine list and affordable fare. The currys while not as spicy as I had thought were still full of flavour and we were satisfied by the end of the meal. Reccomended if in Hobart.
Ella
The best Indian I've ever had! Really good value for money, we got the banquet for two and couldn't finish it. We loved the chicken curries with the mango chutney and the samosas were amazing. Really good service although it was a quiet night. Definitely recommend!

First night in Hobart, found this nice little restaurant down from where we were staying, really lovely cosy setting, made to feel at home, the curries we chose were excellent, well cooked... Give it ago!!
Amie
Delicious and excellent value!! Wonderful service, too. Highly recommend. Try the samosas!
Eating Out
Perfect food everytime. We regularly eat at the Curry House, staff are so kind and friendly, Tandoor Chick and Lamb are my favourite entrees, all curries I have tried are perfect, nice and warm inside and BYO.
Jess
Yummy food (especially lamb korma) and great service!
Btf
We dined here in Feb and thought that the food, apart from the dhal, was really terrible. Service was good.
Speedy
The best naan bread you'll ever get! Curries are to die for
Reagan
On holiday and paid this place a visit because of the high number of likes and positive reviews on urbanspoon. What a disappointment. The curries were really runny , salty and bland. Naan breads were burnt and also salty. Service was fine.
Jessy Saville
Food was good but service was awful. Terribly understaffed. Get takeaway is my only suggestion!
Adam
Nice naan, shame about the curry. The reshami kebab was ok, the lamb rogan josh was tough and the sauce watery. Garlic naan was excellent

This place is open until 10pm on a weeknight - a rarity in Hobart! We ordered the chicken mince kebab entree as a main and I wasn't a big fan, but my boyfriend enjoyed. Also we had the beef masala, which was warm and yummy in this freezing Hobart weather. The rice was rice and the garlic naan was tasty. Overall not the best Indian food I've had, but it wasn't bad either and the staff were very friendly. Thankyou :-)
Kim Barry
Great food. We had the special banquet with chicken curry, Bombay beef and navaratan korma. Heaps of food, up there with the best Indian I've had.
Sedecrem
We ate there twice and it was delicious. I do recommend it.
Tigers_eye
Loved this place. The mango lassi drink is a MUST as is their house chicken curry (can't remember the name of it but it was their version of butter chicken). Do get a garlic naan to have with the curry too. It adds a whole new dimension compared to plain naan. Enjoy :)
