Review Aloft - Hobart

Zhu Wayne
A really enjoyable fine dinning experience. The restaurant is located at the central of Hobart CBD. Service is attentive and friendly. Presentation is second to none. Quite Asian fused modern Australian cuisine. Overall the taste is a bit too salty for my personal taste. However, the highlight of the night is the desert. Mandarin is the key note of this dish. Laying is the key to its success. From the buttermilk foam outside, sugar glazed mandarin in the middle, and then the ice cream in the middle. Airy, tangy, creamy. Such a wonderful piece of art, not only a desert. Credit to the chef.

I’d be here all day if I wrote down everything good about this restaurant. An amazing experience and so happy we went. The service and the food was such a pleasant, genuine experience. It’s my number one recommendation for anyone I know visiting Hobart. They have an amazing diverse vegan menu also which is not something you see very often.

Beautiful and creative food! Flavours were amazing with some Asian influence, and the team used it appropriately to show off Tasmania produce. All dishes were perfectly cooked as well; never had a pork this tender before! It's a great value for money for the quality you get, and ambience is hip and classy. One minor suggestion is that it would be great if more Tassie wines could be ordered by glass :)

A very mediocre and disappointing fine dining experience. We got their vegan tasting menu and I had specifically asked for dietary requirements for my partner (who cannot eat garlic and raw onion). Although the waitress was friendly and said they could accommodate as per my booking, we were very surprised to find garlic in their sichuan tofu and raw onion in their oyster mushroom and zuchinni dish. We did not complain about the tofu dish at the time as we had trusted that this had no garlic as requested. (And assumed it must have been cooked onion) Unfortunately this was not the case and my partner was extremely sick for the rest of the night after dinner. In regards to the food, for a fine dining experience (comparing this to Sydney restaurants) I was hoping for more innovation and finesse in the dishes. The Asian dishes were very mediocre and something I could buy at a regular Chinese restaurant. On a positive note, the ambience was lovely and staff were friendly. It is a nice place to go to if you have little dietary requirements and are looking for something different in Tasmania. I'm not sure how their meat dishes are but as a vegan with dietary requirements I would not recommend this restaurant for the price you pay.

Last night's meal @aloftrestaurant_ was one of the best dining experiences I have had. From the minute I walked in the door, I felt welcome. The staff were amazing, the chefs were amazing, sitting at the kitchen bar was amazing and the food was amazing. I'll definitely be back!

Tasmania trip (last minute as usual due to ever changing covid restrictions 🤦🤣). Christmas Eve dinner at @aloftrestaurant_ - absolutely fantastic dining experience! The chef's menu (100$ pp) was perfectly executed, and had an Asian influence. Every course was yummy, and had something surprising and interesting. The drinks selection was excellent, and the service was amazing and friendly, even though they were fairly busy. Well done 🙂🙂. . Oyster, nasturtium flower mignonette: we aren't normally big fans of raw oysters, but these ones were really good! They were big and juicy, and the sauce was super tangy and delicious. . Sashimi, ponzu, cucumber, sesame: super fresh kingfish sashimi, which was complemented by multiple yummy ingredients 🤤. . Wallaby tartare, Sichuan pepper, tapioca: I've never had wallaby before, but I guess it tastes like kangaroo 😅. At first I didn't know if I'd like the Sichuan pepper flavour, but these were very yummy - if you eat the tartare with the cracker in one bite, the flavours are like a party in your mouth 😍😍. . Chinese Masterstock Crispy Pigs Ears (+12$): we opted to add this optional course because who can resist crispy stuff 😂😂? They were very savoury and crispy - absolutely delicious! We finished it in record time 😅😅. . Crispy eggplant, fermented chilli: this was so good! The inside is nice and soft, and the outside was lightly crisped, and coated with this sticky sweet sauce that had a hint of chilli. Nicely done! . Stanley Bay scallops, nasturtium nam jim jaew: tangy sauce on the scallops, which were super tender and done perfectly! . Market fish (blue eyed trevalla), fennel, zucchini, goats curd: this dish had a beautiful presentation, in particular with the foam. The fish itself had a firm texture, and the skin was crispy. The fish flesh also had lots of flavour in it 🤤🤤. . Pork, macadamia shavings, miso, charred broccolini: the pork is one of the most tender pork I've ever had! It was super super easy to cut and pull apart with your cutlery 😍😍. The flavours were amazing too! Loved the macadamia shavings, which added a nice additional layer of flavour to the dish. Excellent! . Meyer lemon, caramelised white chocolate, buttermilk foam, honeycomb sprinkle: this dessert definitely deserves its own post. It was very delicate, and had the perfect balance of tangy and sweet flavours. The different layers were so nicely done 🤤🤤😍😍. So good!!

WOW! 5/5! What at fabulous experience. Visiting from Melbourne, this restaurant ticked all boxes and exceeded expectations. Starting with a fabulous view over the River Derwent, the food was incredible and although we were trying to recover our bellies from a full 6 course degustation menu at MONA, we HAD to finish each and every morsel on our plates. The food is unique, balanced and so flavoursome! My daughter is vegetarian and so fussy and just LOVED every dish. The desert was AMAZING (sorry no photos)! Our waitress Bronte was exceptional...attentive and knowledgeable. In fact all staff really demonstrated their knowledge of intricate flavours and showed passion with each course they delivered. This extended to the wine menu too. The music created a great ambience...there was a great energy and buzz. I thanked Head Chef and owner Christian who was soooo delightful! We wished we could go back the next night but it will have to be on our next visit to Hobart! Thanks for such a memorable & enjoyable night! x

Staff were lovely about fitting us in on a Tuesday. We were seated at the bar. They are set menu only at $100 a person. Overall I'd say the food was quite expensive for what was delivered. I regularly review food in my home city and I'd say that this was more expensive than Canberra food at a similar standard. The food was fine, but I didn't feel like it had enough depth or complexity to command that price point. That said, Tasmania is a smaller city, so perhaps this is normal? The wine list was also lacking for a restaurant pitching at this level. If you are going, I'd recommend asking for tables by the windows and ensuring you go during sunset. The water views might've made for a slightly different experience.

Amazing in every aspect! Wouldn't dream of usually eating this sort of food but Aloft has surpassed all expectations! We had the dégustation menu and the food is an experience like no other and the service is faultless. The ambiance was great too! I can't recommend this place enough! Wow wow wow!

I have never been so impressed by an overall experience at a restaurant. Aløft goes over and above! The food was incredible; I went in not knowing to expect and was forced into trying food I usually wouldn't choose. My taste buds are absolutely overjoyed with all the new flavours and foods The staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgable about their menu; providing us with the advice with what the eat. Service was fast, easy and efficient. Every time I looked up there was a new plate of food in front of me. I suggest that everyone should go to Aløft and give your palate the night of its life!

Such a wonderful vegan banquet. Staff extremely friendly especially those cooking who were happy to have a chat. Highly recommend the mushroom dumplings and garlic congee. Yum!

Had a most enjoyable experience with friends at this restaurant. Food was beautiful and staff very attentive, but with the number of staff they had you would expect that.. The wine was a bit on the expensive side with no bottle under the $60 mark. Perhaps this is what pays for the very large number of staff. Beautiful spot though and go there if you're after a little extravagance.

Lucky enough to dine here last Friday 15th while in Tassie for Targa Tasmania 2016 and loved it and thank you for our window seat, the view over the water was amazing! Would recommend ordering everything you can and sharing it, lots of small dishes on the menu or even the banquet. Will definitely be back!

Atmosphere and service was immaculate. We had the banquet. All dishes were amazing, however the yellow fish curry and the beef was outstanding. One of my best dinner experiences ever.

Wonderful service from the moment you enter, very attentive staff, food is exceptional, what an incredible experience, when in Hobart I highly recommend Aløft....!!!

We had an amazing time at Aloft! The food was sensational, the drinks were great and the staff were super friendly and professional. We had the pigs ears, the chargrilled quail, yellow fish curry, pork shoulder and the condensed milk ice cream with sable & coffee. We were very very impressed.

Consistently excellent ! A food experience... don't come here for steak and chips ! 😄 Don't come here if your comments are all about quantity over exquisite flavour and technique and innovation and local beautiful ingredients !! This is where you come to see what head chefs, Glenn Byrnes and Christian Ryan, have dreamed up to expand your taste and culinary boundaries. We love the ambiance views and charming staff ! Can't wait for our next visit.
Julie Claessens
Fab food- creative, fresh, zingy tastes and the degustation is the best, plus its good value. Staff attentive, friendly and professional. Can't wait until I come again!

Lovely place , helpful staffs, fantastic food. Enjoy the kitchen bar! It's really good dining experience. My banquet menu is definitely fantastic!

We were apprehensive when we booked but it was a special occasion and I wanted somewhere special for my wife ... it was special .... the service from the minute we walked in was beyond my expectations the food I had an entree of Lamb Breasts and a main of Pork Shoulder my wife had Quail entree and the main was Yellow Fish Curry ... we were very pleased with the amount the taste was just right surprising in fact and our plates were almost licked clean .... great job Aloft special meal/place for a special occasion.

My partner and I were lucky enough to receive a voucher to ALOFT. We aren't fancy in the slightest haha but the atmosphere , the service and most importantly the FOOD was flawless We felt so comfortable eating their , with a water view seat topped it off . We had the banquet and we left feeling very full and amazed that food like that could taste so amazing and we definitely challenged our taste buds. 100% recommend ALOFT

Just a very average experience, we waited one hour between the 1st and 2nd courses and we were served cold dumplings. Every dish was poor to average. We had an 8:00pm sitting and we ordered the banquet at $85 per person. It was 10pm before we were served something of any substance and by that stage I was suffering from heart burn from the lack of food and the level of acidity from drinking wine and only eating a few nautical oysters, a slice of Sashimi and a cold dumpling soaked in vinegar. We suffered through a few more very average dishes before settling the bill early and leaving. I love good food and I travel to go to good restaurants, but this was one of the worst restaurant experiences. .
Sandi Banks
Very disappointing as the food was terrible, particularly the vegetarian dishes. Incredibly touristy and not relying on repeat custom. Will not be going back. Also very over priced for the meal supplied. Very disappointing given a birthday celebration.

From the amazing food to the amazing views and outstanding service there is literally only one thing that i would suggest this place needs to improve on and that is the cocktails. Every single dish from start to finish was amazing. 110% I would recommend this place and go back in a heartbeat 😊 Excellent experience!!!

The ambience in this venue is amazing. Great location on the water. The food is really yummy especially the parfait! The waitress was super friendly. Always able to accommodate walk ins as well.

Every dish was beautifully balanced. I mostly loved that every menu item was interesting - the ingredients and flavours making a choice very difficult. this is the main reason that I have this venue 5 stars. Friendly and helpful staff.

Otherwise:
Well this place has one hat that's an Australian equivalent of a michelin star but it may not be the best place to go to if ur expecting to see the sunset or are a vegetarian.
The interiors were pretty nice. The side walls were slanted almost like a lazer cannon over looking the water. Take pictured before the sun sets. You can't see a thing once it gets dark.
Foodwise:
The congee was pretty decent. The tofu dish and the turnip cakes are definitely avoidable. The eggplant tempura dish is definitely what you need to order to see the serving bowls being utilized to the max :)
The funniest part was the wet wipes that were offered just before the tiny chicken wings were served (they may have been the wings of a chicklet :P)
That being said the mint ice cream packs quite a punch and you actually do get to munch on pieces of mint. So yea it may be worth trying out.

Food service was fast and food were beautiful! Service was ok, the waitress did not seem particularly knowledgeable on the food details, so would help if they explained the dishes better

We got the pork ears, duck, beef tartare and scallops for entrees. Definitely recommend the pork ears - they were crispy, juicy and tender and was the highlight of the night. I didn’t particular like the scallops, they were a tad over cooked. The duck was amazing and tender and balanced out with the pickled cucumber, and the tartare was refreshing

Mains I tried the Sichuan fish fillet and the steak, both were amazingly cooked!
TrueCustomer
Stunning food, inspired interesting and different combinations, perfect service. One note: a couple of the dishes were just too seasoned - a little less salt please.
Jen
The fish curry was the stand out ! Delicious ! Beef was nice but the mussels were awesome ! Pig ear and whitebait ok but I really I really enjoyed this place. Fish curry was worth going back for

Aloft Oh My...

If you had told me I would go to dinner and have an amazing meal consisting of Turnips, Brussels Sprouts, Pigs Ear with a Pinot from Flower Pot south of Hobart, I wouldn’t of believed you.

That’s what happened.

This restaurant quite simply changes your opinion of foods you previously disliked or shunned.

Well done all!

If your in town, go here simple as that!!

A getaway trip can’t be complete if there isn’t dinner plans at a hatted restaurant and of course, trusty Mr D had made a reservation at Aloft for our anniversary dinner and I’m glad he did because it did get quite busy. Stepping inside, it was beautiful. Set in a glassed restaurant that sits over the water, it was totes romantic. The staff gladly showed us to our table by the window and we chose to do the $80 set menu. The good thing about Aloft is there’s set menus for people that eat everything, vegetarian, vegans and pescatarian so there’s something for everyone.

One of my favourite from my trip in Hobart. The foods are excellent! Pig ears is my favourite, they are great and moorish. We were seated on the corner overlooking the harbour and what a great view! Service is also great and attentive.
Cocktails&Chocolate
I’m surprised this place doesn’t have a higher rating! Great location, great staff, great ambience and, most importantly, great food.

We went with the banquet option because we couldn’t decide what we wanted - too many options! A very succinct overview of the banquet is that it included pigs’ ears, oysters with kimchi, prawns, chicken wings, yellow fish curry, Koji beef, and condensed milk ice cream. Favourite dish was the yellow fish curry - so delicious I could have had another serve. Least favourite would have been the pigs ears but still found them tasty - just too salty. The only downside we had was it took a very long time for our drinks to come out - about three dishes in.

Highly recommend if you are going to Hobart.

Fantastic atmosphere tables not too close together, great view and very friendly staff. Sake 1999 wondrously delicious and almost sticky, red rice sake very moorish too. We let them arrange the banquet and were in very good hands $195

Incredible! We had the banquet menu and we left completely satisfied with just the right amount of fullness.

The standouts were the pork shoulder, the condensed milk ice cream, the prawn, the fish and OMG the pigs ear in masterstock was phenom! The oyster dish was our least fave however still very good.

I started with a Yuzushu Spritz and it would have to be the best little cocktail starter refreshment I have had.

Staff were friendly, explained the components of the dishes without attitude, and were attentive.

Definitely will be a restaurant we return to when next in Hobart.

I dined here tonight (June 10th 2017) with my partner and this place was incredible! Stand out dishes were the mushroom dumplings (like everyone says, they are not wrong-they were so good we ordered another round of them) and the steak with miso, wow! I don't even eat much red meat and the steak was amazing! My partner who is a butcher said it was some of the best steak he has ever had, the way it was cooked and seasoned....divine! Overall we had a fantastic time here, everything was perfect, couldn't fault the place! Next time we are in Hobart we will be back! WOW!

5 of us for dinner enjoyed the Banquet menu. For me the steamed oyster, kimchi & sesame was the winner, but really all courses were winners! Each course came at with an appropriate time interval in between. The wait staff explained all the courses & were friendly but not over the top. Highly recommend.
Out And About
Elegant, beautiful and just wow 🙌
We started with the locally made, fresh sourdough with house made butter (infused with Miso).
Then we had the qual with pickled vegetables and white pepper and lemon sauce 👌
Our absolute highlight was the dumplings - wood ear mushroom with shitake mushroom pockets of joy.
Lastly we had the beef with an amazing mustard and fried kale.
They had an excellent wine list and a somillier on-hand.
Thank you to the team at Aloft. The quality, service experience and passion made it a special highlight for us.

What a great night!

My sister and I sat at the chef's bar and got to watch the meals being meticulously assembled.

The banquet was amazing. The pigs ears were a highlight of the night.
5 Or 1
EXCEEDED expectations from the word go! Everything was perfect from the way the restaurant was appointed, to the impeccable service from the personable staff. The food experience was among the best i can think of. Each meal complemented the last with distinct sophisticated flavors. I cannot praise this restaurant highly enough!! You'd be foolish to miss out.

This was one of the best meals I've ever had. Every single thing exceeded our expectations from the food to the service to the decor. We ordered lamb, pork belly, dumplings, fish curry, beef koji, then the salted caramel dessert. It just got better and better with each dish that was served. You cannot miss this. How it only has 3.4 is beyond me. Usually I take photos of my food but I was so distracted and impressed that I forgot to! Absolutely amazing from start to finish.

Seriously amazing. Thanks for such a fun night. We had the degustation at the Chefs Table. I could not recommend it more. This has to be some of the best food I've ever had. Sweet, salty, sour and bitter - all working in perfect harmony. The chefs were hilarious, passionate and proud. Although the wine list did not include many local wines, it perfectly complimented the modern Asian fusion cuisine. We were there just over 2 hours and enjoyed every minute. Thanks again, we will be returning.

Loved it on every level. Amazing food location & staff. We sat at the bar and did the degustation menu, chatted to the chef and waitress both of whom were great. Can't recommend highly enough

Aloft was an incredible experience. The food and it's presentation is outstanding and delicious, with the service being relaxed and super friendly. You get a fantastic selection of endless courses in the set menu, and the price is extremely fair. They are also extremely catering to allergies and dietary requirements. Upon saying that I don't eat red meat the waitress gave me a specialized pescatarian menu and still allowed my dad to have the normal meat set menu! Cannot wait to go back

Aloft was definitely the culinary highlight of our trip to Tasmania.

The restaurant sits right at the end of Brooke Street Pier and despite the stunning views we would have enjoyed in the main part of the restaurant we opted to dine at the kitchen bar and take advantage of the 8 course banquet menu. We were not disappointed.

The space has a seemingly simple design, it’s clean and open, almost verging on clinical with the main feature being the glass wall at the end of the restaurant that boasts breathtaking views of the harbour. The soft lighting warms the venue but what is really smart is that all lights are hidden or covered so they don’t reflect in the glass and distract the eye from the view. At the opposite side sits the open kitchen and bar. There is nothing to hide. Everything is immaculate.

We were welcomed by the entire team – chefs included! As soon as we were seated the food service began. We started off with roulette peppers… one in ten was meant to be hot. There were four of us seated at the kitchen bar and three out of the four were hot! After our mouths had recovered, dishes after dishes kept coming out. They were perfectly portioned, not too big and not too small. The ingredients were fresh and local and the flavour combinations were spot on. The dishes were personally delivered by the Chefs which was refreshing. The pride and excitement each Chef had in presenting their dish gave you a greater appreciation of what you were eating. We loved watching the kitchen banter and seeing how the apprentice Chefs were trained. We were lucky enough to become guinea pigs and try two additional dishes that weren’t on the menu. I have to give special mention to one, as it really deserves a place on the main menu. It was made by one of the younger Chefs and it was black garlic ice cream. It’s something I would never think to order, but it was divine and I’ve been dreaming about it ever since!

Although they’ve only been open for six months it was evident that the team has evolved together. The service was seamless. Staff clearly love working there and that really took the customer experience to the next level. I am excited to see what is next for this young, talented team as they have totally nailed their first venture. Our experience was impeccable. Huge thanks to the entire team for giving us a fantastic night!

Incredible service from the moment you walk in the door and a beautiful setting that is quite open and airy but still feels cosy. The food is delicious, great tasty starters and good variety of flavours in the main dishes accompanied by an interesting wine list. Must try!

Amazing restaurant, food, wine, service, staff and atmosphere. Highly recommend the banquet to try a bit of everything they have to offer..

Delicious fare.

Ordered a huge assortment of food here and was impressed by each and every dish. It's a restrained (in quantity) menu but adventurous in spirit, with fantastic options such as the pigs ears, sweetbreads, fennel and goats cheese sorbet, and even the German spätzle pasta. I love Asian food, and coupled with the Modern Australian/European twists, I was very impressed. Dishes were moorish, perfectly cooked, and varied in their influences from Thai to Chinese.

Highlights were the pigs ears, sweetbread, and lamb dishes. The latter two were complete and well rounded meals, with a great balance between all the elements. The hot, sweet, spicy, and umami flavours were a dance in the mouth.

Service was up to task for the venue, although nothing above what you'd expect for this type of establishment. Friendly and helpful the whole way though, without any pretentiousness, but just a little rough around the edges.

All in all, a beautiful meal and the views is top notch. Whilst not perfect, for where it is and what you're paying, it's a solid five stars from me.

Cloth and timber. Titanium and leather. Salt water and stone. Perched gracefully above the icy waters of historic Sullivans Cove, Aloft is the sensory oasis Hobart has been waiting for!

As they proclaim on their website, “Aloft isn’t just a restaurant – it’s an experience.”

Our meal was exciting, deliciously satisfying, and memorable for all the right reasons.
With a little more time and experience we can only imagine what recognition they’ll be receiving from their peers and the public alike!

Really cool intimate setting with modern decor and amazing views of the bay. Staff were friendly and helpful and the pricing was excellent considering the standard of the food....

We chose to have 2 X appetisers, 2 X starters, 1 main and a desert. All of which were absolutely delicious and presented to perfection. The big standouts were the 'Prawn, fig leaf + turmeric wafer', 'Crispy quail, lime + pepper berry' and 'fried blue eye, zucchini + yellow curry' which was one of the most flavoursome dishes I've ever tasted. Oh....the Apperol Spritzers are also pretty amazing.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant due to the value and the overall experience. It was a real pleasure to dine there.

Loved this take on Modern Australian. Tried flavors I would not normally have tried. View amazing and service the best I have experienced in fine dining.

Asian themed with fresh local produce. Do yourself a favour - take a friend and have the banquet - $70/head and worth every cent plus some. My picks - the oysters, the prawns, the dipping sauce with the quail, the pepito and fig cream sauce with the flathead (best satay I've ever tasted and not a peanut in sight), the beef and mushrooms. Another tip - sit up at the kitchen do you can watch. The whole show is calm and efficient. We had a top night.

Ah-maz-ing view. Worth it for just that alone, especially with a table by the window. Loved that they used Tasmanian produce but some of the Asian fusion notes didn't quite get there. Overall a really good restaurant.

WOW! A MUST for a special occasion - I was completely blown away with my experience at Aloft. The food, the view & service was perfect. We had a combined birthday dinner (6 ppl) & ordered the "feed me" option (approx $70pp). I am not usually fan of fusion food but Aloft did it perfectly.

I've never had pig ears or sweet bread but they were presented with temptation & i enjoyed both. Ok sweet bread was an experience but hey i gave it a go! I loved the koji beef & king flathead. Entre highlights - prawn on sweet potato taco & oysters (so fresh)

They only have 2 desserts, i preferred the pear cake & yoghurt (sounds plain but perfect to finish a night of taste sensation). The coffee condense milk ice cream didn't have enough coffee to make it on my highlight.

Amazing wine menu & very knowledgeable staff who know their wine.

We had an amazing night. The venue felt intimate yet open at the same time due to the view of beautiful Derwent River.
LivingLovingHobart
Arguably, Hobart’s most anticipated restaurant, Aloft has met the high expectations levelled at it and some. With the talented and experienced Glenn Byrnes by his side, Hobart’s Christian Ryan has transitioned from edgy-café to contemporary high-end restaurant chef. Together, they have crafted a contemporary menu, seasonal and Tasmanian, with Asian influences.

Simply stunning. The view of course, is sensational and you can't fault the service or the menu. We dined here during their soft opening week and were delighted.
