Review Sapa Rose Vietnamese - Hobart

Stephen Lu
Had the rice vermicelli combination with lemongrass beef and spring rolls. A little more beef would have been better. Spring roll was ok but need more meat and prawn filling. Service was polite but a little slow. A little on the expensive side.
Declan Cael
Dishes were flavourful but tended to be overly sweet. Serving portions were generous. Service was friendly, but needed improvement - didn't provide a drinks menu, then required a reminder to receive our ordered drinks, as well as prompting for the mains, before ending the night being overcharged - which was rectified.

We had to wait 40 minutes for our order. When they arrived, the wonton soup was good, but the crab soup wasn't that great. The duck rice paper rolls were pretty good. Overall, the atmosphere was very nice, but the wait was way too long.

This meal disappointing. They advertise Vietnamese cuisine at a premium price and it’s nothing more than a typical Chinese restaurant in a cbd. The meal took 40 minutes and it was only us and One other table dining. The food was bland, salty and shiny and the presentation of the coconut beef was like a plate of brown sludge. Service friendly but we couldn’t believe how much we paid for a Chinese style meal. A big miss.

The food was not good. Food that was meant to crispy was not crispy, food that was meant to be spicy wasn’t spicy. Experience was bland, greasy and overpriced. Also they had 2 children working in there! Who on earth thinks that a little girl of maybe ten should be walking up and down stairs serving food? And a little boy of perhaps 12 standing at the cash register at the end of the night, asking how our meal was and taking payment, did not have the heart to provide honest feedback about the food at the time because I was speaking to a child!

Very good taste, very delicious!

Great night there. I had sizzling prawns and rice vermicelli, definitely worth it. The portion were generous. Definitely coming back with my family next time.

Atmosphere was really nice. Staff accommodating when I wanted to change my order 15 mins later. The squid was too bland. We ordered extra hot for the chicken and lemongrass and the chicken was mild. Sizzling pepper beef was nice. Wife enjoyed stealing beef from plate.

Service was excellent and we were given ample of time to ponder over the extensive menu. Once we had ordered the food came out very fast and it was delicious. The staff were very friendly. I'm going back again.

I enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food and prompt service. I would return. 😊

First time visiting Sapa Rose last night. Unfortunately it was very slow service. It took about 45 mins to be asked whether we wanted a drink & to order our food. In saying that, the restaurant was fairly busy. The food was pretty tasty and staff were friendly. I'll be back to give it another go

Had dinner here last night and it was amazing. We always enjoy our visits to Sapa Rose and tonight was no exception. We tried the omelette and it was amazing. Thank you we will be back soon.

Always excellent food and service. We will be returning customers.

Food was excellent and well priced! Would definitely return and recommend. Chicken Satay skewers are a must! =D

Probably the best and most authentic Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. That's my second visit, 5 stars all the way!! Try the Beef Papaya Salad.... You won't be sorry.

Best Vietnamese fine dining in town, taste of Vietnam

Despite being on the pricier side, the Vietnamese food here is overall very good quality and relatively authentic in its flavours. I would recommend the shaking beef and the garlic prawns. They were well done. The soups were a good starter as well. The overall service was friendly and helpful.

I had their lunch special pho. I love it! Generous amount of meat, the chasu (sliced pork belly) was especially YUM! The broth was savory and light.
My friend tried their bun cha and liked it as well.

4 of us walked in off the street looking for good Asian food & that's what we got onight!
Ordered Squid & Vegetables, chicken & chilli lemongrass, crispy noodles with 3 meats & 1 beef coconut meal. We were very satisfied!! Good service to.
While we're in Hobart we will return & try other dishes from this restaurant.

After some pho cravings while in Hobart, decided to come here after seeing the score on zomato. Upon sitting down and looking through the menu I realised two things, this place was not even nearly authentic Vietnamese and it was very expensive compared to any other Vietnamese I'd had before. Regardless I figured that it's always worth paying a little more for something tasty so I went ahead and ordered the pho.
Sadly the food wasn't worth the price point in my opinion. The soup itself tasted slightly watery and not particularly flavoursome. The noodles were a bit mushy and the meat not super tender either. It didn't taste particularly authentic, but it wasn't inedible either. The bill was probably the worst part. From memory it cost around $21 which is a hefty $10 more than I'd pay anywhere else for much better quality.
Overall, I would give this one a miss if you're in Hobart and go in search of something better quality for the same or cheaper price.

Started off well. Nice spring rolls, not a bad atmosphere, friendly service. However, the main was terrible. We shared a prawn sizzling plate with steamed rice. The prawns were rubbery and tasted'fishy'. The rice was a little dry. Probably the worst Chinese food I've had since the 90s. Also the food was definitely not authentic Vietnamese. Incredibly overpriced. The meal should have cost maybe 25 overall but the bill was 60 including a glass of wine. Would recommend people go somewhere else.

Last meal we at there in March was delicious. We had quail and Beef Pho. Service was good and the staff were very polite and attentive. We will be taking our Sydney friends there tonight. Great view out of the little window upstairs in this old house. Loved the decor of pressed tin ceilings, brick and fireplace upstairs.

Nicely decorated Vietnamese restaurant with old VN scene on a easily parked spot in the CBD, good variety of food on menu, but the food is not as nice the restaurant.
We came in and waited about 5mins, there's no way to notify someone that we're there, and no one came out to serve, but then another guy came in, then the waitress came out and served him first (?!).
Had special beef noodle, which tasted above average, the bowl was a bit small so with lots of noodles inside, it didn't have enough soup in it.
Had Saigon pancake, which was also above average, however the lettuce was probably not washed properly, I can still see some soil/diets stuck on the leaves and some fell out on the plate.
Overall, not satisfied. With that price range, there are lots of room for improvements.

This was a light dinner to satisfy our cravings for Asian food in Hobart - and satisfy it did (mostly). The pho was well done with a clean, clear broth. Not the best pho ever, but that would be sheer folly to expect that kind of miraculous discovery in the suburbs of Hobart. The sweet tamarind soup was good but came with one very lonely looking little prawn...I understand we all work under budgetary constraints but when I order a soup featuring prawn, I'm thinking prawns rather than a single prawn.

I ordered Salmon and Chinese Broccolli. Paying 41 with no drink for a Vietnamese restaurant, you expect a good quality but unfortunately that's not the case. After a long wait I got the food to find the salmon didn't taste fresh at all, definitely frozen. A very tasteless food with very salty sauce that didn't even seem too different from a packet sauce on top.

After an afternoon out on the water, too later for lunch, not quite time for dinner I felt like a quick bowl of pho. The chicken pho broth was absolutely delicious-one of the best broths I have tasted (I live in Melbourne-been to Vietnam-eat pho at least once a week). The waitress was lovely, pho arrived with all the condiments, chilli was nice and hot. Only negative was the price... $18 for a bowl of pho-most expensive pho I have ever had.

For real this restaurant scored a whooping 3.6? I have been waiting for food to come or at least an apology due to any reason. A newbie in hospitality industry? I doubt very much on the good comments.

Visiting Hobart for work. Did a search on urbanspoon and found SapaRose had Pho on their menu. It was delicious. Full of flavour and with the fresh chillies added, nice and spicy. The service is very average but the food came out very quickly and hot
Amy_kuiters
Terrible experience. Started the evening by having the worst wine of my life, moved on to debating why anyone would deep fry betel leaf, everything else just left us unimpressed.

The service was rude and we felt ignored. Would never go back

Great Food with Perfect timings for us. Late dinners are always welcome. Me and my friends love this Vietnamese place.
TubbyGrub
Food not authentic. Our experience started off really well with efficient service and tasty soups for starters to warm us up (it was very cold outside). Having visited Vietnam recently, where we had loved the freshness of the food and the use of herbs/spices like chilli and coriander, we were looking forward to eating authentic Vietnamese food. We ordered one grilled pork dish and one beef dish we had really enjoyed on our travels. Cannot begin to explain how disappointed we were. Could hardly stomach the bland, rubbery pork (we ordered chilli sauce to add some flavour but this didnt help much). The beef was akin to boring westernised Chinese takeaway. Simply put, this place does not serve Vietnamese food. Would have let the waiter know our feelings but was very busy when we went up to pay our bill.

Delicious flavours, good quality fresh food. Yum yum

Wonderful!. Arrived in the right frame of mind to have a good time with friends and we were treated to a great night. Every dish was a winner, soft shelled crab, xo scallops, whole flounder and squid.. Yum!! It was a bitterly cold night and yes we kept our coats on- (but so many restaurants in Hobart/Tassie refuse to appreciate good heating/fail to understand that it's hot in the kitchen but freezing out front) All up it was a grand feast, friendly staff, and we are all looking forward to trying out more flavours on a very extensive menu.

A little way to go yet.. First of all I want to say that the food was delicious. I like to have a different flavour experience when I dine at I did at Sapa Rose. Prices are fair. The beef allows were absolutely delicious and next time I will order double. Service was fine despite those other reviewers who would say otherwise. The only drawback was the draftiness of the place. Being a cold night outside, the non-fully closing front door made it uncomfortable for most of the night and at certain stages I almost got up myself to close the door when half the wait staff walked right by it. Even with the door closed it was still cold. Will definitely dine here again but just not in Winter.

Diners from Hobart/ Jo Alissa Suzanne. Had dinner at sapa rose on 30/4/2012. Food was delicious, service was very good.
Happy with price for our banquet. First time having Vietnamese food, will definitely return.

My boyfriend and i really enjoyed this restaurant. The Waiter always had a smile, very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing and we'll definitely come back!
If i could find one negative point, some dishes on the menu were not available any more. If they change the menu, you got yourself and awesome restaurant :).

Food is amazing, service disappointing. We love going to Sapa Rose at least once a week if not more... despite the usually lazy/awkward customer service and often long waits. The food is so tasty i have to keep coming back!
Honey Barbara
Delicious. Had dinner & lunch here recently, both times walked out satisfied. Pho is really good & so is the lemongrass chilli chicken. Will certainly be returning regularly.

Another excellent meal. Great service and great food again. Lovely mix of fresh flavours which we keep coming back for.
Paul
Fresh looking food with a great blend of flavors. The service was friendly and efficient. Will be returning and recommending to others.

Fresh and lovely food. Very nice, highly recommended. Service is friendly and staff very helpful

Shocking service! Ordered entrees and asked to order mains soon after but were ignored for 45 minutes until the entrees came out and then the waitress tried to take our mains order!
Very poor service seeing as there were only two other small tables in the restaurant.
Very disappointing as the food was tasty when it actually arrived.
Jonathan Fullerton
Food was fantastic! Fresh and full of flavour. Only let down was the service. It was far too slow. Needed more staff on the floor

Lovely friendly service & the food was delicious. I'd go there again for sure!

No pho no go. I'm originally from Sydney living in Launceston and I miss being able to pop out to one of a dozen Vietnamese places and grabbing some tasty pho with mates. We have one place in Launie that I enjoy but they only do pho at lunch. So when I was in Hobart for a meeting I took the opportunity to grab some Vietnamese.

Firstly just like in Launceston pho is only a lunch thing, I wish I had known this before I sat down but I was starving. So there went that plan.

I had some fresh vegetarian rice paper rolls that were nice but nothing spectacular and a sizzling beef dish with spicy pepper and honey sauce. Again nice food but nothing to write home about.

Would I go back? Probably not. It was far too expensive for the serving size and the service really left something to be desired. I arrived at 6pm by myself for a quick bite and was the only one there and the waitress who wasn't particularly friendly still took forever. The second waitress who came out later was far nicer but I still had to ask for my drink as they forgot it.

For all the wonderful produce and food that Tasmania offers they're really behind when it comes to quality Asian cusine.

But for now I'll be happy to go back to my little place in Launceston for some pho until I can get back to Sydney.

Enjoyable. My husband and I went here last Sunday. We really enjoyed the food and the staff people were very nice. It was the first time we had dinner here and we will go back to try more dishes.

Fantastic. I went to Sapa Rose for the first time last week, and it was lovely - great food (had soup, entree and main and all were beautiful), fantastic service and nice atmosphere. I was the only vegetarian in a group of around 8, and everyone else wanted a banquet - the waitress offered me my very own vegie banquet and allowed me to pick and choose what to include in it. Highly recommended!
Natalia
Went here for a birthday, drinks were meat to cost $14 like in the menu (cocktail) ended up neon sneakily put down as $16.00 on the bill. Ended up paying an extra $12.00 just on the drinks when we shouldn't have. The waiter kept hangin around to take our plates while we were still trying to enjoy ourselves, can't tell you how infuriating it was to have him reach across to take my partners plate without an "excuse me" while I was trying to eat. The waitress didn't know what an island ice tea was so decided they didn't have the drink, has to show her their own menu. Absolutely rude, we all commented on how rushed we felt to each other. I liked the meal, but I actually dont feel I would go back because of the service.

Really Enjoyable. I really enjoyed the food, first time eating Vietnamese.I was a bit worried about the service after reading other reviews but it was great! The wait people were very efficient in handling our indecisive ordering which often confuses people. The food arrived in good time and the wait people continually refreshed our water jug and cleared away empty plates throughout the meal. One lady in particular was lovely and welcoming.

A slight negative was that we only had 2 menus between 5 and they didn't have any more available when we asked for another one. Also we had to wait awhile for the bill. Overall though, very positive experience and I look forward to going back to try more dishes!

Trying hard. We were uncertain if to try this place after reading the reviews but decided to give it a go. There were some disappointments along with some pleasantries. The place was very full both downstairs and upstairs on the Friday night we went and there were a number of large groups. We overall found the service slow and disjointed. We asked for water when we sat down and it took a very long time to arrive while 3 different staff asked if we were ready to place out order. The entrees that we wanted were not available - "ran out" so had to choose something else. What we had was ok but nothing spectacular. We wanted whole fish with tamarind sauce for the main and opted for the snapper as a choice of 3 fish. The waitress returned to say the cook would not do snapper as a whole fish steamed "it's not the right sort of fish to do" so we asked for one of the other options and the waitress returned to advise that the cook would not do any of them. We could have the fried fish option which we did not want. So we were throughly disappointed especially because it did not seem that the reasons were honest. Perhaps we should have been told that they did not want to do it that night (even though offered on the menu) because they were busy. We ended up with alternate choices which we enjoyed but would have to say they were mild in comparison to other places we have eaten. Wouldn't rush back but hope they keep trying.

It's was a revolting food , bad service and certainly not quality vietnamese food - would not go back.

High hopes. I do agree that the service at Sapa Rose is rather atrocious. I asked for some soy sauce and fresh chili that still hadn't come out after we'd been eating for quite a while. So I asked a wait staff to bring me some again - but was given soy sauce and chili paste. But when I asked again for fresh chili it was given to me without fuss. Once we had finished our meals, our original server brought out soy sauce and fresh chili and seemed shocked that we had already been brought some.

As for the meals themselves - they were great quality. The flounder with tamarind sauce in particular had my tastebuds jumping with delight. The lemongrass chicken wasn't anything as good as (nor indeed did it even resemble) anything I've ever eaten in Vietnam, but it wasn't bad, either.

I think that with a bit more time to grow, Sapa Rose will become a fantastic business. It has a while to go yet, though.

Very Ordinary. Room was freezing and uncomfortable. Watch a family get up and leave after being seated because of the lack of heating.
Food was horrid, no other way to explain why food was served with sauces straight out of a bottle, and that is after they got the menu selections wrong.
Would certainly not return and not recommend this restaurant, there are many better places to eat in Hobart.

For dinner, W and I walked around the "CBD" and noticed that the Vietnamese place called Sapa Rose was packed for the night. We ordered steamed rice with beef morsels wrapped in betel leaves, crispy spiced silken tofu (must order!) and the lemongrass chili lamb. W and I had a really good chat about our lives, being single (and not to feel ashamed about it) and our plans for the future. Sorry, no pictures. We were too busy talking and eating, I forgot to do it.

I really enjoyed this meal - beautiful flavours and it was great value...The service was a bit patchy, and mains took quite a long time to come, but it was worth it.
