Review Pigeon Whole Bakery - Hobart

Lu Bi Huang
Popular bakery in the middle of the city. Lined up first thing in the morning for breakfast. Staff were friendly and got through orders pretty quickly. I got myself a double shot piccolo coffee, a ham bagel and an almond croissant. The coffee was alright, a little watery for my liking but had a strong taste to it. The ham bagel was a bit disappointing, the dough was a bit tough and chewy, the thing that saved it was the pickles. The almond croissant was the best thing I got, it was still warm when I had it and was really delicious. A little too sweet for my liking but not to take away how good it was. For anyone looking to get breakfast for cheap, this is not the place for you. The three items cost $19.50. please look at the price and not think with your stomach like me! Overall, a good breakfast. I love how they serve your coffee through a hole in the wall after ordering, staying true to their name.

One of the better croissants I've tried, would recommend. Moist and good consistency to the crust across the whole croissant. Enough structure to the crumb to maintain its shape as well. Great contrast overall. The flavour is prominent, some complexity and it makes you appreciate what you are eating. Its certainly on the sweet side for a croissant. Wouldn't return for the plain sourdough: Initially pleasant and a nice tang but its lacking complexity or depth reminds me a lot of bakers delight sourdough. Almost getting a bit dry too. Well utilized space, seems like it would be a nice place to work overlooking all the shop floor and street. Hard to tell with covid but seems to be lacking any space inside or outside to sit and enjoy your food. The shop front mostly has an industrial feeling with the busy street, sidewalk and driveway entrance right next door.

Prior to taking away, we walked past this place a couple of times because it’s near our hotel. And no matter what time it was, we always saw staff hard at work, baking at all hours. The variety of baked goods is amazing! Just wished we had more space in our tummies to try more.

Premium bakery in the middle of the city - lots of fresh bakery treats, mostly sweet, to choose from. Prices are on the high side, but the quality is worth the price. Make sure to ask what the current filled doughnut is, they change it regularly and often have brilliantly unusual options like lemon and thyme.

BEST CHOC CROISSANT! And I ate 4x choc croissants from 4x best rated bakeries in Hobart. This one was by far the best. Came back a second time in my short trip here

Such a beautiful spot with amazing coffee and even better pastries. Unfortunately they don‘t have any dine-in available (might also be because of COVID).

Great bakery and coffee place with a delicious selection of sweets and amazing bread. You can also see the work of the bakery trough the windows behind the counter where you can see how they create there fresh and yummy breads. Ps: they also sell Market Lane coffee in bags at the counter it is one of the best coffee rosters in Melbourne.

As a baker myself I was taken back by the simplicity of the shop and the breathtaking display of bread and fine products. The coffee was great and the staff were very inviting and informative!! Keep up the goods! Thank you

Great bread made by great people, I highly recommend both the ready to eat treats and the take home loaves!

Popped in for a light brekky and thoroughly enjoyed a bagel with some filter coffee. Hubby had quiche and went back for seconds! Then we shared a delightful lemon curd and bay leaf donut. Enjoyed it so much we came back again this morning!

I tried the organic linseed sourdough - it's amazing - I live in Launceston and unable to get it all the time - yum yum

Lovely baked goods but just had the worst service of my life here. One experience with service this bad and I will NEVER return.

Real Bread, best damned baguette I have had.

Sourdough bread is the best I have had. Very light not at all heavy like a lot of other bakeries. I'll be definitely buying more :)

Everything is first class at this fantastic little bakery cafe.
Sensational breads, croissants and pastries.
Very busy trade - always a good sign.

The staff who served me was extremely attentive and warm. Answered my questions very politely. Even offered to save some jam donuts for me because I went there before they were ready. She explained that they sold out really quickly. Food-wise I bought a cream cheese bagel with jalapeno and bacon. Although it was served cold, the bagel retained its outer crunch and inner softness, and overall it was a really good bagel! I went for the donuts the next day and managed to get a chocolate donut and a jam donut. Tasty!

A small bakery with so many oh so delicious looking treats in its cabinet. There is limited seating available so if you want to eat in, make sure you grab a seat as soon as you can.

They sell a range of pastries, cakes, breads, and sandwiches. All looked invitingly yummy and it wasn’t a difficult choice for me on what to pick for my sweet treat. I had read about the Morning Bun and definitely eyed that one off. It was a wonderful combination of pastry and caramelised honey. Boy was it so good! Friend got the Vanilla Slice. It was amazing layers of pastry and custard.

If you’re looking for a place for a great pastry, this is the place to visit.

Fabulous bakery - amazing curried egg baguette and almond tart.
I think I found my go-to in Hobart but today I left the bakery confused.
Small thing guys - step up on the customer service:

I was served today by two people. One guy - friendly and efficient 👍🏾 and the second a woman ‘cold as ice’ a grimace, a robot.

Customer service is what gets repeat customers.
I left this place with a perplexed look on my face, seriously?!?
I am Londoner living In Melbourne so maybe this is normal in Hobart? I hope not....

DONUTS! Get the donuts and enjoy them. They are super delicious. Everything else looks amazing too. The Eccles was perfect. Filter coffee available too.

Great spot for a sandwich (we had hommus, lettuce, olive, caramelised onion on sourdough- delicious) & coffee. Might have to jostle for a seat - only 5! Cold press coffee only (no espresso)

Located right across YHA Hobart. We had their cream cheese salami bagel and this cream puff (?). Loved everything about the bagel.. and the cream puff!!! Ultra-YUM!!! Crunchy almond, soft and delicious puff, and the cream cheese........ it has something like apple jam inside, I’m not sure what it was but it super YUM!

Friendly service as well :).

Recommended!

Quite small but a good selection of pastries, I tried the coffee custard donut which was yum! The hot chocolate was very rich and better than most. Would return to try more of the cakes...

Hands down best bakery in all of Tasmania. Very cute set up and always busy because it is so popular. I would return just for their ‘morning bun’, their version of a cinnamon bun, which was so perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Beautiful take away loaves too, particularly the fig and walnut loaf. The filtered coffee, which I’m not really used to, actually went down a treat. Highly recommend.

Great ambience! Pickles cream cheese bagel is a great combination for breakfast. The bagel was soggy tho from the picked. But The sour taste reduces the oily feeling down the throat. They also serve drip coffee which can improve with better temperature and dripping, the coffee residues left in the platelet needed to be washed off after drinking it.

Kicking off the first day in Hobart in this bakery. It is widely known around the area as it served freshly baked pastry everyday. The sitting area is quite small as I notice many people will rather have a takeaway rather than eat and seat there. morning bun - $5. It was a really simple bun. It was sweet and flakey. The outer part is kinda crispy but the inside is really soft.
Amon Amarth
Boutique Scandinavian-minimal-esque bakery serving delicious handmade treats, and flour goods. Really delicate pastry work, looks and tastes amazing. Stumbled across Pigeon Whole as we were saying in accomodation nearby, really great find. Definitely swing by and pick yourself up a snack.
Selling coffee beans from Melbourne's own Seven Seeds and Market Lane. Boom !! ☕️🥐

Famous for its heavenly sourdough breads, I didn't appreciate they also baked delicious pastries. We had an assortments of pastries, and the kids gave the lemon tart full marks, followed by the chocolate puff and surprisingly sourdough donut being the least favourite.

I will definitely go again to try more of their pastries!

Their stoneground sourdough is the best bread in Hobart and I am a fan of their almond croissants. Do yourself a favour and go there.
Shame about the coffee though, not sure why they'd not have a regular coffee machine?
Hungry Piksee
Delish! Tried the caraway seed bagel with cream cheese and pickled cucumber and it was A-MAZING. Loved the touch of salt grains on top of the bagel. Also had the Morning Bun - a wonderful croissanty delight with an earl grey (?) syrup which left this not usually sweet tooth wanting more.

Delicious. Suggest the Eccles cake and a savoury brioche.
Would be just perfect with a little coffee and to sit in the sun - the construction site this will be feasible soon.
Quite hidden from the main road, this see through bakery provides you with superb bread loaves as well as some pastries. Order is made through a small window where you can also see the menu board and price list there..
Be there early or you'll run out of everything. We went here on Sunday around 9.30am and the plain croissant already sold out! Lucky we scored the last piece of Almond Croissant. Croissant was so buttery and flaky, the filling wasn't too sweet and had nutty richness.
Chocolate custard donut was light and fluffy.. It's sugar coasted with velvety chocolate custard filling.
The savoury bun (thyme and parmesan) surprised me with its soooo-fluffy texture. Felt like eating spongy cloud cake with a distinct parmesan flavour.
Last but not least was their recommendation, Morning Bun! Flaky like a croissant, sweet and chewy like a cinnamon roll, and full of sugary goodness to satisfy your sweet tooth!
