I love freshly baked hot cross buns at this time of year, so I can't drive or walk past a bakery to trial what they have on offer. When I saw the buns at Red Poppy Bakery I decided to go with a six pack as they were huge, and looked so good. The ladies serving in the shop were really friendly and with so many yummy treats, it was hard to resist. We also grabbed an award winning sausage roll and a lamington.
The sausage roll was fabulous and full of flavour. The pastry was so flaky, literally falling apart in my fingers. So delicious. The lamington had the softest sponge, and the cream and jam were a fabulous addition. This is the best lamington I've had in ages.
We chose to have the hot cross buns toasted at home with heaps of butter. They were amazing. Huge, and full of fruit and spice; they reiterated my theory that bakery buns are way better than the ones at the supermarket. I will be sure to return to Red Poppy to try more of their fabulous treats.
The new staff at Red poppy are so friendly and courteous. The cakes and food are high quality at a very reasonable price. The best of all is the Coffee... the lady (Mom) makes the best Coffee!!!, you won't be disappointed!!.
Very nice place. They make yummy pies and their chocolate croissants are amazing! So are their M&M cookies. It's an easy place to stop for a coffee and a cookie before carrying on to the station.
I love the freshly baked food from here. I have to wait in a long queue because the place is very popular but we are served efficiently and the wait is worth it. Heaps of healthy and gluten free options available. They are very allergy sensitive with a colour coded system to alert you to the presence of various allergens.
Pastie was so-so. I got a meat and veg pastie from here to kill time after just barely missing my train. It was OK; crust better than the filling, which was mainly mince and carrot. The rest of the stuff in this bakery looked attractive, though. Very dinky-di selection of slices, sausage rolls, bread loaves -- things you'd have found in the 1950s, but not all old-fashioned and daggy. This is in the Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse mould. Solid stuff, nothing cutting edge, decent prices.
I'll be visiting Red Poppy again because I've got a rort with the train system when I work at southern hospitals in Zone 2 towns such as Clayton and Dandenong. I have a Myki card that's paid up for Zone 1. Coming back to Melbourne, I get on the train at a station like Yarraman with no boom gates and fare-dodge for a few stops. Then I jump off at a Zone 1/2 fringe stop such as Hughesdale, swipe on and catch another train as a legitimate rider. Red Poppy is close enough to the station that I can get over there for a snack and be back before the next train arrives. I love it when I can combine cheating and eating that way...
Very traditional bakery with incredible value food. Amazing pies and pasties with lots of vegan and gluten free options. The cakes are incredible, and the coffee is very very good. This is an absolute gem! You can’t go wrong. Lovely people too!
Delicious vanilla slice! Very fresh!
We tried a vanilla slice, our first visit to Red Poppy, definitely not the last.
The pastry was fresh and crunchy, often I don't enjoy vanilla slices as the pastry is soggy, however these are absolutely delicious.
Great proportions of icing to custard.
Sadly only photo is of the crumbs we left behind.
Been a customer for over 30 years. It's coming up to Easter and and I must confess their Hot Cross Buns are yummy
Very good value, friendly staff and surprisingly good coffee. A nice little part of Hughesdale
