Review Nu Orleans - Ipswich

Kelly B
Just had a delicious fix of New Orleans foodie heaven... The Gumbo is amazing I've had it about 10 times now via uber eats and finally got into the restaurant it self to take pics to share the yummy food.. definitely worth the drive. Can't wait to come back here again. Staff are friendly and the Chef is great too.

Lovely balcony overlooking Ipswich. Decorated awesome! New Orleans style food. Great music. Pretty lights on the balcony. Staff are super helpful and real. Great romantic night out. Highly recommend.

We had a very nice time . The food was good and live music (Jazz) was great . The atmosphere was good

Lovely environment, food came out fast. Not the best meal I’ve had at that price point. The steak was well over cooked. The schnitzel was dry and hard. The blue’s rolls were very dry (pulled pork). The mushroom gravy and oysters were amazing. I hope it was just a bad night for the chef.

A great place for dinner, I attended a small catered event here with my partners work colleagues. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was delicious. The despite looking smallish from the outside there's a lot of stuff they manage to fit in. There is plenty of tables upstairs and the place is artfully decorated. Pricing is fair, atmosphere is great, service is wonderful. This is certainly a great example of what Ipswich can offer.

I went here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Damn the food really hit the spot. The coffee could probably do with being made with a smoother bean for those that don't like a strong bean, but they made the coffee clean tasting though which was good. The meals were fair priced and were filling, the staff were very welcoming and acted like most staff wont in Australia.. out the front of the restaurant greeting passers by in a professional, friendly and informative way without seeming desperate. The man I believed was the owner had great body language and was very welcoming and seemed to be quite engaged with his level of care. It was a good experience coming here

Overall, a very poor experience. No live music, despite the advertising. The meals we had were not nicely presented at all, they just looked as if they'd been slopped on the plate with no regard. The 'Street Chicken' meal was bland and the sauce covered everything on the plate, so there was no way of sampling different flavours throughout the dish. The decor was tacky and the waiting staff, whilst attentive, were scruffy and unkempt. Would not visit again.

We ate at Nu Orleans about a year ago and thought it was fantastic, the Po Boy came with a generous serving of chips and onion rings and was full of flavour, and the burgers were delicious. This time the service wasn't as friendly, and the standard of food has definitely dropped. We ordered the Po Boy again, the presentation wasn't great and it definitely lacked flavour. We won't be in a hurry to return.

So glad we gave this place a shot the other night - the food is tasty, and the cocktail I had was great too. Loved the decor. Staff were more than accomodating, and for a big group the food came out pretty promptly.

The waitress made a small error in our order but was so amazing in fixing it. That it turned into an amazing find with some of the best American style chickens wings we have found. Thus the reason I give it 5/5 great job

To start the food was great we loved loved loved the tempura oysters and the grilled chicken

The service wasn’t the greatest but it was okay and loved the funky layout

Hubby and I set out Sunday morning to Nu Orleans, Limestone Street Ipswich to enjoy a late Brekky. Arrived about 10.30, half an hour before the Brekky menu goes off. Hubby ordered the Big Brekky that included buttermilk pancake and maple syrup as well as the usual suspects of white toast, bacon, sausage, eggs any way you want, baked beans. I ordered The Greenie - Avo, baby spinach, white toast, 2 eggs. When we placed our order we asked for 'soft' poached eggs. Meals arrived promptly but the eggs on both dishes had firm yolks. No problem for the lovely gentleman/owner who whisked our plates away and a few minutes later appeared with lovely soft eggs. yes, it was lovely to get the friendly, fix everything service with a smile but it is hard to over come average. The meals were nice but there was nothing to get excited about. We always order coffees to follow our Brekkies and they arrived in a timely manner, unfortunately, it was the worst coffee we had in ages. There was confusion with the order, not the owners fault and we received two small flat whites. They tasted like grainy filter pot coffee with some hot milk added. We will probably try them again for lunch some time.

Been about 2 years since we had been, and things haven't changed. Slow service, give us our mains but forgot to bring cutlery, meanwhile food was going cold.... Entrée of Bruschetta and Wings were good, Fried Rice was weird with ingredients and the meatballs were cold in the middle and the last one that was eaten was raw in the middle. Told staff (and showed them) but all we got was 'oh I'll take that up with the kitchen when you leave, but that will be $XXX'. Last time we were here we specifically came for the prawn dish because it was nice and spicy the first time. Oh no, apparently even though it mentioned it on the menu you actually had to ask for it to be spicy!!! Really?? Then why have it on the menu stating spicy!! They didn't care then, and they didn't care last night. Only came here to give them a go again, but sadly nothing has changed. Won't be back, will support other Ipswich restaurants that care about what customers have to say.

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and thought it would be busier. Perhaps it's more of a nighttime venue though... I had a cheeseburger and my husband the pulled pork and po boy sandwich. Mine was ok. The meat was overcooked and I was disappointed to find it was served with regular tomato sauce. For a restaurant style burger, tomato sauce doesn't cut it. My husband on the other hand loved his, thought it was delicious. So a bit of a mixed review from me. Service was friendly and meals came out quick. Also great that it's on the Entertainment Card.

Love it! The food is great, the atmosphere very nice and the waiting staff are friendly and efficient. I usually order the ribs as they are fantastic! Their prices are really good! Highly recommend.

Went here for lunch with some girls from work, I ordered a bowl of chips and gravy in lieu of aioli & tomato sauce, also ordered a coke. Instead I got all three sauces and the aioli was more like melted butter with garlic - aioli is meant to be mayonnaise with garlic. The people I was with also received some of the meals late, a salad, and one was even forgotten.

Went to pay and was charged $12.90 - $4.80 for coke and $3.20 for a tablespoon of lumpy gravy! Cannot believe I was charged $3.20 for gravy. If they reduced their prices and had some training in customer service they might actually serve clientele who will return because I won’t be.

It's interesting reading the past reviews as they don't seem to learn from the mistakes of other reviews or they don't read them.

Would never go again!

Over priced, under staffed, rude waitstaff and long wait.

They ran out of several items on their menu. We waited an hour for an entree which was 6 slices of stale and cold french bread. When we asked how long our mains would be the waitress was rude and indignant that we asked, and were then told that because we had an entree, it would be longer still. The mains took 70 minutes to arrive. Considering the prices versus the quality - 6 slices of cold french bread for the entree and my main was just a sliced chicken breast on semi-cold mashed potatoes - it's utterly not worth it in my opinion.

I have never had a worse dining experience than Nu Orleans.

This used to be called Fig Jam if I remember correctly? Used to come to this cafe many moons ago with my Mum when we lived at Fernvale. Cosy little spot with an upstairs dining area however we chose to sit outside. We were in a group & just needed coffee which was actually a bit of a let down. Being Di Bella I was expecting all the great flavor & overtones which one expects with that blend. Instead we all received rather watery cups with not a lot of crema (see pics) & the barista seemed rather preoccupied & sullen

I was a little disappointed from the start. Sitting next to a main road. Menu wasn't the greatest. My steak was overcooked. The worst thing was possibly when we had all finished our first set of drinks and they asked if we'd like more. However, they never came. Tried to Bill us for the drinks too.

My Nephew had his 18 Birthday party and mentioned when he was there last time the meals and service was great. I'm not sure what happened because tonight was terrible. We arrived at 6:30 went upstairs and was seated, ordered drinks and waited for more then 20 minutes. We were the only ones there and they had a small bar in the corner and managed by two staff. About 7:15 we ordered dinners altogether 16 meals. We ordered another round of drinks but what surprised me was my last wine glass was bigger but my next wine was in a smaller glass, less and same price. Not only my drink was smaller but my sisters glass shrunk as well, the waiting time was still about 15 minutes which was a bit confusing since we were the only table and there were staff standing around not serving or picking up empty drinks. Dinner came after complaints happened when it was 9 and still no food, they were cold, over cooked. Other people on smaller tables down stairs were Receiving meals eating and then leaving and we were still waiting. When they did come it was not eatable for some of the meals, steaks were to be medium but were tuff, out of the 6 steak meals only one had mushroom sauce and the rest were BBQ sauce. My meal was the bourbon street grilled chicken $21.90 grilled Cajun spiced chicken, grilled shrimp and mashed potatoes with bourbon sauce. What I received was totally different, yes mash potato but it was the powdered type, chicken and shrimp were not grilled, some weltered spinach I think and the sauce was flooding the chicken. But wait there was extra a half Moreton bay bug that looked like it was over done and the size was questionable if it was a legal catch. Out of all the meals 16 meals, I have never seen so much half eaten remaining food for a table if 16. Unfortunately my nephew had gone to speak to the owner who said he had staff that normally don't work for him and that is why the service and meals were bad. The cook is still the same person! We did not have to pay for meals but paid for drinks not a problem. The comment that was made "I'll get them next time when they are back" and not realising my partner was there. I certainly won't be back nor will I recommend this place.

For my overnight business trip I searched for something a little different, and absolutely found it at Nu Orleans.

It was a busy night, which was surprising for... Well... For Ipswich on a Thursday night. I ordered the Steak, Ribs and Shrimp combo and a Long Island Iced Tea.

The good was great:

- the Pork Ribs - OMG tender and.the tastiest rib sauce I've ever had. Sweet, Tangy and not at all cloying as they can sometimes be.
- the Onion Rings - I don't know what they did to them, but soooooo crunchy and flavourful, despite just being onion and batter.
- the Dianne Sauce - I travel a lot for work and I LOVE a good Dianne sauce, among others, so I asked my waiter, Alan, which sauce he recommended and he went all shopping network excited about the Dianne Sauce, so I gave it a go. It is hands down the BEST Dianne sauce I've ever tasted.
- the Long Island Iced Tea - holy crap!! It was like 5 strong drinks in 1 for alcohol content, but went down like a really delicious virgin cocktail. It put a big smile on my face from first sip to last gulp. It may account a little for the effusiveness of this review.
- the STAFF- I ended up meeting a few of the staff throughout my adventure to Nu Orleans. The absolutely fabulous Alan, a very friendly sista of African ancestry who may or may not have come via New Orleans, and a young, and friendly blond Anglo Australian co-lover of rarish meats with beautiful tattoos.

The bad was really ok:

- It was busy but my meal came out in a timely manner. When the waiter delivered it, she immediately checked if I'd ordered a drink. I had and it still took a while to come out, but as mentioned before, it was worth the wait.
- I was offered, and accepted table water at the same time, but it never came, which I wasn't totally fussed about considering the aforementioned delight in my cocktail.

The ugly was a small glitch:

- the Steak component of my meal was not, as I had ordered it, "the rare side of medium rare", but rather the rare side of extremely well done. Just after I had cut into it in disappointment, I managed to catch one of the incredibly busy waiter's eye's with my look of disappointment and she stopped, turned and came back very graciously. She asked if something was wrong, saw the slice of uneaten steak and looked concerned. I said, regretfully, that I could forgive most things but that I like my steak bleeding and not grey but it's ok because I could see they were swamped. She said, "nonsense, I like rare steak too and I feel your pain." (ok, perhaps the long Island Ice Tea I was 3 parts through might have translated that for me). In any case, she took it away on a side plate and had a perfectly cooked substitute back in about 2 minutes more than it would have taken to cook it.

All up, it was a delicious (and massive) meal, that really worked for me. Sirprisingly, I find myself longing for my next work trip to Ipswich, just so I can enjoy their hospitality again.

The general vibe is okay, I can see what they were going for, however, sagging renderings on the walls and an electro swing version of the Mos Eisley cafe song from Star Wars left me feeling a little illegitimate whilst eating my overpriced burger that could have easily been from a corner store cafe.

Had our first experience at Nu Orleans tonight. We will definitely be back. We had the wings as a starter and they are out of this world!! The wait staff are very attentive and upon leaving the manager came out and made sure we were happy. Would recommend this place 100% to anyone.

Service was fantastic. Waitress very attentive and friendly. Didn't have to long for our food. We had garlic bread, which came with some very yummy dips and cayjan chicken strips, also with yummy dips. For mains I had spicy shrimp with jasmine rice, lots of prawns and absolutely delicious. My son and his partner had steak, pork ribs and shrimp, they said theirs was delicious too. Would highly recommend Nu Orleans for future dinning experience. Thank you to all the staff for a memorable experience

Very disappointing meals for our second visit and won't be back after being dismissed by owner. First time I had the Shrimp Nu Orleans - very nice and very spicy, so decided to bring family back to try it. Last week it was absolutely tasteless with definitely no spice. Waitress said to let the cook/owner know and when we did we were fobbed off stating everyone complained about it being spicy so it no longer is presented as such. And oh, if you want it spicy next time, let them know and they'll do it that way. Well, sorry, if you advertise the food as spicy you should tell customers that it is no longer spicy so they can decide how they want it, not wait for someone to query it.... Husband had Bourbon Street Chicken first time and so daughter tried it this time - no where near the flavour there this time either.... At spending over $180 for the dinner I won't be coming back to see 'if' they can make it spicy next time. Then don't get me started on the absolutely slow/poor service. First time service was extremely slow on quiet night but I liked the meal but this time the service was worse on another quiet night. If they can't handle a half dozen tables at a time, then that is a concern. Even brought up jug of drink, waitress said she would get the glasses, waited 10 mins, saw us waiting and even had to get her attention to ask again for glasses. All this probably explains why it is so quiet when we had been by to eat. $180 for 5 people is not a cheap night out to have half the meals as tasteless.

Great lunch. Had vegetarian fried rice and sister had shrimp and rice. Well prawns actually but name of dish fits the cuisine. Both good sized serves, tasty and served in good time.

Large booking went to smoothly. We had a table booked for 18 people but then five more people turned up as well and the staff were so professional and accommodation. Food came out quickly and everyone was very happy with their meals. Prices were great too.

Pretty average. I was really excited about trying some American cuisine in Ipswich but unfortunately was disappointed overall. On the one hand, the atmosphere and music was excellent, and had a very energetic vibe. For our entrees, we had meatballs and the chicken strips. My fiancé enjoyed the chicken strips, but we both felt the meatballs were pretty average. We waited about 90 mins for our mains to come out, which was pretty annoying considering we only ordered burgers. We asked twice how much longer we'd be waiting, as we were seated outside (in the cold, as no heating was provided), to which the kitchen staff seemed quite annoyed at. The owner did apologise and told us they'd had a big table ordering upstairs...but we'd noticed another couple who'd arrived after us received their meals half an hour earlier. When the burgers eventually came out there was no apology and the staff didn't seem to care about the wait. We had planned to see a movie after dinner but had to abandon this due to the late meal. Unfortunately the burgers were not worth the wait either. Won't be returning any time soon.
