Review Cafe Tre Fontane - Ivanhoe

Jim Jim
A friend who lives nearby took me here for a coffee. She said that her son had recommended the place. It's a charming and unassuming little cafe. We both ordered flat whites. Probably the best coffee I have had in Melbourne. And I consider myself an aficionado. I bought a couple of donuts and they didn't disappoint either. Genuine review.

Charming and modest interior, no-nonsense food with good quality ingredients, and one of the best coffees I've ever had in Melbourne served scorching hot, as it should be! Walked in just to satisfy my craving for a salami sandwich, and probably found my new favourite brunch spot. They have a lot of homemade pastries that looks great. Definitely not my last visit!

A really nice small cafe that seems to know and love coffee. A reasonable selection of pastries- both commercially and locally baked. The fresh blueberry muffin was superb.

So many great options from coffee, donuts or cannoli to sausage rolls, paninis and pizza. During COVID great spot to get fresh produce as well. 👍

Feature excellent coffee, coffee making supplies and roasted coffee 'beans'. Quirky but very welcoming ambience. Very attentive and friendly proprietors. Try their home-made food. Sicilian donuts yummy!

Smooth long black with golden krema made by an experienced barista ~ excellent morning coffee ~ full of flavour. Great cafe for a quiet coffee and perfect place to read the paper. No fuss customer service. Definitely worth visiting.

Great coffee. BEST coffee in town we think! We are big coffee drinkers and my partner and I both think Tre Fontane make the best in Melb.

Highly recommended.

Have been coming to this little cafe since I was less than a metre tall. They have treated me and my family as if we were apart of they’re own. Wonderful service, always friendly. Make great coffees for a affordable price and are quick and efficient. Longest owners of a shop in ivanhoe strip. Keep it up boys. Xx

Come for the coffee, stay for the coffee. I have only ever had coffee here, but it is very good and worth the drive. Grab a drink, sit outside and soak up the sunshine.

The best hot chocolate I have ever had from one of my favourite little spots in Ivanhoe. Service is quick, their traditional panini's are full of flavour and the atmosphere makes you feel as though you're in Italy. Can't wait to get back.

Very cute cafe, once you walk in the door the smell of coffee and the fresh Italian doughnuts is absolutely amazing. They serve breakfast and lunch the coffee is very good and the service is friendly and attentive very reasonably priced but the doughnuts are to die for absolutely spectacular. Will go again. 👍😘☕️🍩 delicious.

Sorry I can't say this place worked out very well for me. I wanted to like it. Squishy interior, small fake marbled tables, retro style coffee machine, edgy Italian dude behind the counter. It all added up to the grunge I prefer. Unfortunately the long macchiato was not how I've known it. It was basically a long black with sad bit of froth on top. Pretty bitter even after three heaped sugars. Had two little sultana style donuts. Bit stodgy - just so boring.

My $7.80 bill was rounded up to $8. Ciao.

I can see why people would rave about this place - small, homely, food made onsite, excellent Italian coffee, and about 10 maps of Sicily dotting the walls. However, the customer service was unfortunately lacking on this day and they didn't have ingredients for most of the menu so we opted for a pizza from the case, which ended up being quite tough. Not terrible, not fantastic. Probably wouldn't go to again, but could be persuaded.

Buon doughnutti. Homemade Italian doughnuts! I was hungry for exotic doughnuts after reading a story by Matt Preston about Melbourne's best fried dough treats in the Herald-Sun food section. Normally I believe the opposite of anything the Hun says, except I respect Preston because he got his start writing for The Age, before he became a TV identity. Tre Fontane’s window sign spruiking “Sicilian doughnuts” caught my eye on a long bike ride along the Yarra. These were nice nuggets of fried dough, studded with sultanas, with a cavity concealed in the centre. The texture was more spongey/yeasty than cakey. The thin round doughnut I had -- I’ll eat any kind of pastry I haven’t tried before -- did not work as well. It was oil-saturated and soggy, nowhere near as crisp and tasty as similarly shaped Lebanese doughnuts I’ve sampled.

My flat white, of course, was wonderful. It’s the Melbourne area, and it was made by an Italian. What else could it be but good? It had fine microfoaming, robust flavour but pleasantly creamy. The bloke running the place was a bit dour, but served me efficiently -- even brought my coffee and doughnuts (which were warmed, thanyouverymuch) out to the footpath table where I was sitting. I’m more focused on the taste of the food than the ‘tude of the staff, so Tre Fontane earns a “buono” from me.

Why all the complaints?. Some people are so fussy. I've been here a few times and I find this place authentic and quaint. It is a traditional Italian setting. Melbourne is all about places like this. Give it a try.

Bad mannered owners and awful coffee. The owners are very bad mannered and have a frown on their faces when you walk in, so unwelcoming. The coffee is rubbish. Not worth visiting there are far better cafes in Ivanhoe that can make a better coffee. Its a coffee bar to steer clear from.

I'm not sure why everyone raves about this place...... Service is ok, but coffee is always bitter. It's also very cramped inside. I hit my head on a shelf above a table the first time I went there and got my pram stuck the next time!

Bad coffee, for a supposed espresso bar. Take away flat white, too hot, weak as, and heaps of foam. Won't be back.

I came back after a long absence and was served a decent coffee. Will return if I'm ever in the neighbourhood .
