Review Pappa Rich - Joondalup

Robert Falloon
Pappas Rich is a great restaurant for Malaysian food. It's casual dining bit the food is full of great flavours and consistent so you can always rely on getting what you ordered. The Curry Laksa is exceptional, to my taste at least but there are lots of great dishes available. Lots of parking at Lakeside Joondalup. One of my favourite places for a quick inexpensive meal.

Went for late dinner . Place was nearly closing. Ordered satay sticks which was bit dry. The roti with chicken curry was tasty and so was beef randang. Not so great on service . But good food.

Again! They served a burned plate of chicken skin! Disappointment after another disappointment. This remind me of the reason why I don't go here. The food quality is poor. There is no care factor!

Quick service and yummy food. The staff was very friendly. We ordered the chicken skin dish but didn't like it as it felt old. The lady who took our order explained it's because of the pre-marination and refunded us back! Had a great lunch!

The beef randang was amazing. Although some of their menu items were out, they were very kind and professional when addressing me and the people I was with. All of the people I was with including myself very much enjoyed the meals we had chosen.

Not friendly service I request to sit the table I want they said NO even was not busy at all The food are average plus when Im ready to order the food I need to stand and to order at the front of door again is just not so convenient you need to leave the table the service not friendly at all

I went for lunch today and i was very disappointed. Staff wasn't friendly at all. They ask you to wait to be seated and when you choose your table they come and they put on the table one paper serviette (per person). They give you a menu, but to order you need to go at the cash register and pay your food in advance. Even to wait for few minutes untill is any waiter avaibable. Multiple forks and spons are in holders on the table with the handle down. You will never know if the part you use to eat have been touched by the previous clients. And also you can't wipe it as you have just one serviette. The fork was a cheap one that scratch your teeth when you touch it. Water cups were plastic like the kids ones. Food was average. It wasn't hot temperaturelike it wascoiked and waited a while to be picked up. The entre had 4 skewers with maybe 10 gr of cooked chicken. Looked like trimings to me. The side salad for the entre consisted in 3 squares of red onion with 1 layer each and 3 cubs of cucumbers. The peanuts sauce was tasty but flooded in a red oil. The main consisted of a chicken cury (skin on) with 3 pieces of chicken with lots of sinew. The side was a grey steamed rice, some salty peanuts dropped fron a bag nd bit of salty fish. All this average meal cost me $28. Conclusion: Restaurant prices for a cantina meal and service

First satay sticks were red. Had to return that as its for my toddler. 2nd satay sticks came pink and the waiter told us "some chicken thighs meat is pink". Refund was offered. Seafood laksa was below average, saving grace for the 2 star was the nasi lemak and crispy chicken skin.

When Papparich arrived in Australia, I was quite pleased to see somewhere serving Malaysian delights, and a good place to get a Nasi Lemak fix. In recent times I have also found some limited vegetarian options, and the vegetarian ‘mutton’ nasi lemak is definitely a good substitute. If you are vegan you have to ask them to omit the egg.

Not great but not terrible, portions are pretty small, food is pretty good though and you don't have to wait very long at all

I dined here a few years ago and wasn't impressed at all. Saw that it was in the entertainment book and thought I'd give it a second go. Really glad I did as the food was much better this time round. Roti was cooked well as was the beef curry. Fried chicken was also great. Our only let down was the chicken dumplings which came out freezing cold. Staff were able to give us a new plate within 10 minutes though. Really quick service as well if you're in a hurry.

Service is good. I tried curry fish fillet. It is nice and fish fillet is very fresh. Serving is very big too. Tou Fu Far is nice with Gula Melaka.

Came for dinner on a Friday night at around 7pm. Failed to notice that they close at 8.30pm which is my fault. Promptly seated at a table for our group of 5 people. The tables are very close together which is awkward, feels like your at a busy Maccas. Ordered our food and it came out fairly quickly, no complaints with the food its pretty good. We tucked in and were still eating when a woman (manager?) barged up and said its last orders so do you want anything else? We were surprised because it was only 8pm but we ordered some desserts and didn't think much more about her abrupt attitude. We finished up around 8.30 and headed up to pay and there was one table of other diners still left. One of our party asked to pay for two people and the same woman as before said "no we don't do separate billing", she looked very unfriendly. I offered $100 cash and the other $35 was to go on card. Nope we don't do that either, no apology, no smile, just a hostile stare. Lucky I was carrying extra cash so I paid for whole table and they paid me back later, which I don't mind at all but it is embarrassing for my friends and the folks who don't carry cash which is pretty much everyone these days. The policy is ridiculous but her manner the entire night was even worse. We definitely won't be back, go to the Northbridge restaurant instead!

Everything is so salty, Sambal spinach is ridiculously salty, the signature papa chicken rice is salty, it tastes so much worse than before. Will not come back and will not recommend to anyone.
Lamb Pickles
Hainan chicken was dry - seems as though it was over cooked. Plus the soy sauce and the chilli sauce accompanying the dish, did not help. Portions are terrible and definitely is not value for money.

Had the same dish with one I had in Paparich Northbridge but this place food tasted and looked no where near it. Absolutely disappointed because the food was bland, tasteless and made me feel sick eating it so I had to leave it. Presentation was so bad it look like someone just threw everything on the plate without taking time to do it properly. It just looked so bad. Messy and disgusting. Northbridge one took time to present the plate nicely and I appreciated that they took effort to take all the bay leaves out of their curry before serving to me even though they were so busy. But not here, bay leaves are everywhere even when it was so quiet. Food come out so quick after we order that made me doubt if it’s fresh. But I was right, it was so bad. Nothing taste nice and fresh like one I had in Northbridge.
Never ever will go back to this place. Paparich Northbridge is the only place to go if you want good food.

Dropped in for a quick lunch, fairly standard meal for a reasonable price, didnt have to wait too long either. Dont have hi expectations and u won't go wrong

Disappointed. Microwave chicken. We went there for dinner at 19:30 and staff wasn’t really happy about us coming in and look at the clock. Roti canai was alright and satay also. Being to this restaurant a lot but this time really disappointed.

What a shame.... we have eaten at PappaRich in Sydney and at the Joondalup store with much enjoyment and consistency. It’s our version of a fast food fix - roti & Curry Chicken. Tonight they let us down but what was more disappointing was the justification for cold/luke warm uncoooked chicken curry “ we use chicken thighs so thats why they are pink colour”.... really? And being cold and at best luke warm?... that’s how it’s served! Yes it was but never has been before!!! You did take the Roti/Chicken off the bill... thank you... but now have lost a couple of regulars as you didn’t accept responsibility for your food shortcomings .

Drinks were delicious. But the food was shockingly terrible. The crispy egg noodles were submerged completely in the sauce and very salty. The filling in the steamed mantau with kaya was very runny, pooling the dish. The noodles in the Pappa Pan Mee Soup was clumpy. I had high expectations because the first time I ate here, everything was great. This time is a disappointment.
Eero
Had the curry kuey teow, nasi lemak and roti canai with chicken. Kuey teow was so plain and tasteless so I wouldn't order that again. Nasi lemak was okay but for some reason the northbridge one is way tastier. Roti canai with the chicken was the best part of the meal which tells a lot. Food comes out very fast, I guess that's one of the few good parts about the restaurant.
Expat Gourmand
It's no secret that I'm a fan of PappaRich. Obviously not the PappaRich restaurants in Malaysia itself, where the authentic food is so readily available on the streets for cheaper, but internationally. I think PappaRich is doing a great job introducing reliably tasty Malaysian dishes to many people outside of Malaysia. I've so far been to PappaRich restaurants in three different countries, and they were all sufficiently good representations of Malaysian cuisine. Of course, nothing compares to the real authentic experience of eating Malaysian food on the streets of Malaysia itself, but beggars can't be choosers! When we were in Perth a couple of months ago, we had the opportunity to try out PappaRich in Joondalup twice. It's located close by to my parents' and siblings' homes in the same suburb, which made it an easy and convenient choice of meeting point. The food was, as expected, delicious. Service was friendly and helpful, especially given that our family is really big with lots of kids and my elderly parents.

I like Malaysian food and it's a nice place to eat when you crave Laksa or Nasi Lemak. Lots of variety on the menu, food is usually very tasty. Service is fast. Prices are reasonable. What should be the star of the show, the satay , are actually average and they should be better, larger, tastier, more of the grilled and flame flavour. I will keep eating here though.

Not too bad at all if you want a relatively cheap feed (under $15 pp) in Joondalup
I have menu choice number N17 and it hasn't disappointed me so far.

Fast and friendly enough service. Their system with the buzzer and menu ordering is great. The food is yummy but the portion sizes are on the small size. They also have a great selection of drinks and vegetarian options. This is a better option than the food court in Lakeside as well as the Hogs Breath nearby.

You know exactly what you're going to get with Papa Rich. It's one of those places that I go to one I don't know where else to go. For a chain of restaurants it serves a variety of nice dishes. I particularly like the grill chicken.

Been to papparich for so many times!!! Actually went here almost everyday.
My fav restaurant in Perth, actually the best Malaysian/Indonesian/Asian restaurant in Perth. I've been tried some of Malaysian and Indonesian restaurant that served nasi goreng, but this is the only restaurant that can make your nasi goreng really spicy the same as you eat in jakarta or kl. I recommend you to order nasi goreng R03 and ask them to make it spicy, it will definitely spicy so be careful!

Beautiful restaurant. Good service.
Taste was delicious but order was late for 15 mins. They've lots of choices in food.
I liked the unique style of the Order taking. They are the best. ❤️🍴

Cheers guys 🍻

Formal review to follow

Pleasant enough. Food simple, salty although somewhat unidimensional on taste.

For quick, cheap Malaysian fare it's fine. Except it's neither cheap nor quick, particularly in the evenings.

There are some vegetarian options with spicy soy meat mutton. Noodles are a highlight. As are the laksa.

Download the iPhone app. Get points and promotions.

Keep coming back on a cold evening :)
Rob
Lunchtime visit. Clean premises and good service. No chicken dishes available on the menu, apparently a supply problem - that is a fail for an Asian restaurant. Dishes ok except rice noodles rather hard. Prices a little on the high side.

Not sure what people rave about. Food was bland, service was friendly but you basically place your own order and then hand the docket to the waiter. Won't be coming again.
Eating Out Perth
Been twice to Pappa Rich, once in Canberra and now Joondalup. Seem consistent, no obvious difference between the two.
My Nasi Lemak was tasty, beef randang with it was ok. Fellow diner had the biryani, big fail, most of that was left behind.
I'll go back, decent value. I avoid the drinks, not a fan of all the syrup.

Easily one of my favourite restaurants around. I had never tried real Malaysian cuisine and what a great place to have my first experience. I have tried a few things on the menu and each thing has been absolutely delicious. Staff are kind and friendly and the ordering system is great as there is no pressure on hurrying with your order. Meals are well priced and so tasty. Would absolutely recommend!

Warning!! I found " A LOTS "!!! of feathers on deep fried chicken skin ..... did complaint & they served me another plate real quick claimed it's a " new " serve. Grossly .... I found BIG CHUNK of feather on new serve too ... it's absolutely revolting ... doubt Papparich Joondalup hygiene now , should take a pic of it but I forgot. Told them i can't eat it, they took it away and didn't charge me. I have seen some tiny chicken feather on KFC fried chic and chicken dish from some other restaurant , but never seen this much " BIG CHUNK " ps ( not exaggerate ) of feathers. Hope they sort their chicken feather dish problem after seeing this comment..... I rated 1 because negative rate is not allowed here

I'm from Singapore and I've tasted Papparich in Malaysia & Singapore. The food here is legit... And dare I say even better than Singapore. (Maybe the chef here is better).

Portions are big, service is fast & good and the food is really delicious. I came back 3 times within a week. That proves how much I love the food here (and also miss food from home).

Some of the items are very overpriced though.. Avoid the satay and toast bread. The main dishes are the highlight here. Bandung tasted more like milk (do not order), but the ice milo was really nice. I like the beancurd too! Though for the same price I could have eaten 6 bowls back home. Haha!

Restaurant was a nice set up...service was ok...some food came out quick and others not so quick...my main meal was nice...flat bread not enough so had to order another one for $5.50 which I think is way to expensive...the portions for curries are too small...the seafood laksa was nice and generous...overall price abut on the high end...food taste good...came up to $60 for 2 of us including a fizzy drink and water

Disappointed with your customer service. We asked for a jug of water and it tooks over 3 time and 15 mins for it to arrive. Your staff should learn from papparich in northnrige.

14.01.2017 ---
Wow, NOT HAPPY. Terrible service this time. We're not usually ones to complain directly to the staff willy-nilly if it is something we can just deal with and suck it up.

This time, however, we found the drinks to be not drinkable. We all ordered the hot milk tea and found it to be too sweet. I love sweet things but even I found this to be sickly sweet.

So, we asked a staff member if they could somehow rectify it and dilute it. She said she needed to ask the supervisor. I don't know if who she asked was the supervisor or not but it was the first person she came across. If that person was the supervisor then she was hopeless. She looked at us like she didn't know how to rectify the problem. So, we suggested to have more tea to dilute the drink. She said ok and left.

We waited about 10 minutes and nothing, in the midst of her walking around doing everything else. We ended up waving down another staff member to follow up. Eventually, about another 8-10 minutes later, by which that time the food even came out, a man brought over one cup of milk tea without sugar... between the 3 of us, to pour and dilute ourselves, which was very messy (see pics).

The worst part, which annoyed us the most, the man said "... if you want anymore we will have to charge". Excuse me? We wanted more not for the sake of it. We wanted more to try rectify their terrible milk tea. If it was made well then we would not have requested for more to begin with. If they took away the originals to re-make then that would have been fine too. But to be told we would be charged to fix their problem? Appalling.

Rating just went down....

Management, I hope you read this so you can improve.

-------------------------

31.10.2016 ---
Had a nice and light afternoon snack again. Good food and good service.

--------------------------

They have a big selection of food, drinks and desserts here. This time we just went for dessert. I ordered the Sago Pudding. It was nice but it was a fairly small serving.

The service is efficient and the staff seemed pretty friendly.

Needs improvement.

Kids meal out last despite request.

Rendang on plate lukewarm, biryani dry, sambal prawns also lukewarm.

Satay as good as I have had overseas.

I have visited this restaurant multiple times. Roti Canai with curry chicken is delicious Roti is buttery and has multiple layers. Curry chicken is full of spices. I have also eaten Roti Telur Bawang ( Roti with eggs and onion stuffings) but I prefer Roti Canai. Nasi Lemak reminds you of Malaysia while chicken satay is also delicious. I also like laksa - chicken as well as sea food one - they are served in big size and soup is spicy. Dumplings are not of my taste though . For dessert, Roti Bom is good : buttery and sweet. But condense milk makes it too sweet for me. And finally Teh Tarik is a must try.

Worst food in Joondalup so far. We went here with a group of 4 and all ended up with the runs. There's a dish called deep fried chicken skin which still has some feathers on it. Absolute rip off and disgusting
Arale-chan
Great lunch option that serves really quickly and generous portion. Been here a few times. Laksa was delicious. Nasi lemak with fried chicken is my fave. Roti canai and roti telur are very good. Steamed chicken is lacking flavour. Coconut paradise and cham (coffee+tea) are delicious too

I have had coffee at papparich many times to know what it takes like and today I was very disappointed to be given coffee that was not "real coffee". I gave me instant coffee! I would rather them tell me that they ran out than give me something I didn't want. Wasted $4.50 on instant coffee where I could of gotten my coffee fix somewhere else. Not Happy papparich!!

Fantastic experience today for lunch. No que to get in and prompt, friendly service. Food and drinks were certainly tastier and more flavoursome than the Northbridge and Carousel counterparts. Will be back!

Ordered the tandoori chicken and roti, the roti was delicious and sweet, tandoori chicken tasted very authentic and condiments were flavorful. Partner ordered the spicy soup dish with extra chilli, no complaints and we had a side of prawn dumplings which were very nice. Service was great and ordering was a breeze great experience will return

The roti canai is great here! Loooove it. But I found the rendang a bit sweet and chewy, and the teh tarik didn't stand out, especially for the price. Ill be back for the roti though!

Been here twice ,once on my own and again with another couple who were keen on trying it for the first time. I was not impressed with the meals as I have had better. I ordered the fried noodles, and steamed chicken rice dishes. Both dishes were small for their sizes and no better than what we have had at other restaurants, infact the meals were far superior at our usual Asian restaurant and cheaper.. They say Malaysian cuisine yet no dishes on the menu state this. I was shocked to see that if you order a drink and don't want ice , it is an extra charge of $1.50 ?? Where did that come from. This is a franchise and it is not value for money as far as I'm concerned.. It cost us $30 for lunch, way too much , our usual Asian lunch set us back $19 ,, far better value and more satisfying and delicious. Good luck , but not value for money here.

Love the food. Their roti is the best, thick and bit crispy but soft on the inside. Good service too.
Tried the chicken satay as well, no complains.

Very disappointing. We went once and didn't enjoy it, then gave it a second go (to be fair) and the experience was still just as bad.

I ordered a soft drink and they gave me a glass with ice and a warm can. Yep, warm. The place had just opened, so I thought maybe they were still working out the kinks and forgot to chuck all the drinks in the fridge. But then we went a second time a month or so later and I ordered a Coke. Guess what? It's warm again.

I said to the waitress, "Last time I came the drink wasn't cold either, are all your drinks warm?" She replies YES, except the in-house specialty drinks (floats, etc). I have never been to a restaurant that serves room-temperature soft drink and now I'm two for two. I don't get it, they have to store the drinks *somewhere*...why not store them in a fridge?

I ordered some satay sticks and paid extra for the sauce -- only to find that the sticks come with sauce anyway (the menu was vague and seemed to imply that the sauce was an extra cost). No big deal. But the satay sticks were dry and tasted like they were reheated in an oven. Overall this made for a very unpleasant meal.

The second time we went, I ordered Nasi Goreng and it was horrible. It was watery, filled with shredded lettuce and tasted like last week's microwaved fried rice. It didn't have the traditional fried egg on top either. I normally eat as much as I can since I don't like to waste food (or offend), but I could only get through about half. It was that unpleasant.

A friend had a dish with chicken and the skin was so dry, it's like when you throw a bbq chicken in the oven and leave it in for way too long.

On a positive note:
I'm not a fan of wet dishes (noodle soup, laksa, etc), but others I've spoken to have all enjoyed those sorts of meals at Pappa Rich, so you could give those dishes a go. I have no complaints about the staff either.

Hugely disappointed, the staff were friendlu but half my food was bland and the other half was way too spicy (I usually like spicy), was not a very pleasant meal

Paparich take 2!
My wife loves the drinks they serve here, so if we went but I had my doubts, due to my Northbridge experience.
I ordered similar items that i did at there Northbridge outlet:
Briyani rice, fried chicken and sabal eggplant and prawn: alot different to the one in Northbridge as the fried chicken was so moist and tender with crispy skin. Sabal eggplant n prawn was tasty.
Roti: I thought this was crispy and yum but a bit sweet.
Pappa pan mee: the noodles was like pasta (cooked nicely), mince chicken, anchovies, sabal and a poached egg served with a broth. This wad something different and tasty which i enjoyed. Serving i think was small for this meal.
Satay sticks: chicken n beef. Both was nice. Little bit of a char but i think it is double cooked as both were abit dry (especially the beef).
Cendol: this is simple with various ingredients but great way to finish the meal.
Service was ok. Some servers forgot a few things which we had to remind them.
If i go back to Papparich, it'll be the Joondalup store.
Roo
i much prefer this papparich in comparison to the northbridge one! not only is it closer and even easier to get to for me with it being right in joondalup shops i find the overall experience much better. i've been here over 5 times since it's opened. the food is the same in quality even better sometimes but i will say it comes out even quicker. the area is more spacious and clean and the staff are professional and friendly. always great portions for the price and it's a nice alternative to other places in joondalup.

as always there is always hits and misses with the food at any papparich. i don't really like the beef satay sticks bit of a rip off or most of the noodle soups. i do recommend any of the roti canai, dry kway teow with steamed chicken which is my personal favorite, chicken skin and the tropical lime for drinks.

keep up the good work papparich joondalup! fantastic staff, service and food.
More Than Nourishment
I was so happy that we could easily get a table as I was expecting to wait based on my previous experiences of going to the Northbridge location. We got the fried noodle, beef randang with sambal eggplants and rice, and barley drink. The food was nice but nothing amazing. It is also a little more expensive than your average Malaysian place (average price between $14-$18 per main dish). Service was efficient and the place was really clean which is also a bonus!

Went to Papparich for the first time last week.I've never really eaten Malaysian cuisine before so I was intrigued. We were greeted at the door almost instantly, then we sat there for some time after we had decided what we wanted to eat because we had no idea how the ordering system worked. After we'd had a good chat and I was getting hungry I worked out that you had to order it yourself and then buzz for the waitress/waiter to come and get it. I thought this was a pretty cool idea but I think it would of been better if the person who sat us had let is know how it worked. Anyway the noodle dish I got was absolutely beautiful but the dumplings weren't very nice. The lychee soda was to die for. The food is a reasonable price and the serving sizes were plentiful. Overall it was a positive experience and I'll be back.

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to be invited to an exclusive tasting at the relatively new PappaRich in Joondalup. Leading up to the event, I visited this location three times on my own accord for lunch during my working week, as my day-job is currently based in Joondalup. I’ve tried the Canberra and Northbridge PappaRich stores previously and have to say, I find the Joondalup outlet to be the best I’ve visited – the staff are friendly and the food is really, really good.
PerthfectBreakfast
Had apprehensions about coming here but it is better than its Northbridge counterpart in leaps and bounds.

The nasi goreng with fried chicken is off the chaaaainnnn. Would-eat-again/10. Chicken was moist, skin was crispy and the veggie fried rice had heaps of flavour. Topped off with a fried egg and chilli sauce, so much yum in my mouth.

The roti canai with curry dip was soo sooo good. Crunchy, flakey and light. Honestly up there with some of the best I've had overseas. The roti telur with egg was decent.

Satays beef and chicken skewers were average and I wouldn't order again. Still working through their extensive list of drinks. Service was friendly and food started coming out within 5 mins of ordering
Lychi_love
We've been here a couple time since it opened and service had been consistently good. Prices are reasonable as the food servings are slightly bigger than average. A good alternative to other food outlets in the Joondalup shopping precinct

The pappa rich in joondalup is so much better than the one in Northbridge... The speed of service, quality of meal, ambience is beautiful... It's reasonably priced and staff are courteous... Would definitely recommend this to all!

Perthians north of the river jump for joy! The third PappaRich has recently opened inside Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre! No more long distance driving if you are craving for some hawker style food! One fine Saturday I ended up there, thrilled to be invited for lunch to celebrate its opening, I love the food at PappaRich!
Inexology
The Joondalup’s franchise has a close proximity between customers’ table to the roti station so I snooped around the open kitchen to look at how one of the staff created the delicious multi-layered roti.

With PappaRich, you pay more than what you would at a typical hawkers but the portion sizes makes up for it. Some people might have complained about how the price at PappaRich Malaysia was so much cheaper than the Australian franchise but they also need to remember that PappaRich Australia use local produce which made each dish really fresh and tasty.

I haven’t found any dish that I disliked except their Nasi Briyani but my taste buds were ruined by my school teacher in high school who created the best Nasi Briyani ever. So far none has topped up what he did.

The service that day was friendly, attentive and quite fast and most of us got our meals at the same time. Whether you call the meals in PappaRich authentic Malaysian dishes or think of them as an imposter, PappaRich has always delivered consistency to their meals and the food speaks for itself.
