Our go-to for lunch in kalamunda. Ordered the buttermilk fried chicken burger, slow roasted pork burger, chickpea & broccoli salad & squid. All fantastic dishes. The squid was exceptional value considering the generous serve. Couldn't fault the service. Will return
Good food , good service! Good drive out brekki place for the city dwellers!
Good drive and outing for the city dwellers. Will be back over weekends
Went here for coffee and muffins. Best almond milk latte I've had for a while! Banana muffins nice and fresh. Really cozy and fun atmosphere. Very friendly service. Will have to go back for lunch menu sounds amazing!
yum! such a nice cafe in the hills w outdoor seating and dog friendly. this was one of the best toast-egg combos I've ever had. really... adding just that extra corn salsa and layer of avocado was delicious. matcha latte was good as well, not too sweet as i like it. my friend enjoyed his meal too. would definitely come again. service was good and friendly.
Loved this place! The customer service was great and the food was even better! I forgot the exact name of what i ordered (pork with kale, sweet potato etc) but i absolutely loved it! I didnt leave anything on that plate, each element just complemented one another. Plus the decors are very homey which i absolutely adore. Will come back for sure and bring my family with me for brunch. 💕
Raining so I head for the hills. Great portion sizes and tasty food. Prices are great! Speciality coffee and tea to wash down my date waffles... loved the fresh mushrooms and the shredded chicken salad was a tasty treat.
Frequently go for coffee which is always good. I never sit inside as it's too noisy, but the outside seating is good. Today i finally tried the food - had the Vego On Toast and it was amazing - every bite was full of flavour.
A bit of a late review for Mason & Bird. Went here a while back with family and really enjoyed the food. Portions were also a good size. I have to mention the service. It was absolutely top notch! Some of the friendliest staff I have ever come across.. ever!!!
Really impressed with this place! Cheerful and helpful staff, lovely atmosphere and drinks set the tone. Then the food came out... the cauliflower gnocchi was perfection and the seemingly simple beet and kale salad was actually next level delicious with its fresh leaves, heirloom beetroot, tasty dressing and the nicest walnuts I’ve ever had!
Planning a return visit very soon :)
Small modern cafe in the perth hills. Good vibes although it can get very busy and noisy. I will return for the coffee it's delicious. I am yet to try the food.
such a great place. the service is amazing, the decor and location incredible, and the coffee is always top notch. hate to rant but apparently i have to so if your going for a coffee in the hills, you just have to go here. I've lived here for 10 years and this is the best place by far.
Excellent little cafe with top notch food. First noticeable thing is the friendly staff and pleasant vibe in this cafe, good seating area outside and no loud music blaring in your ears ...hallelujah , being able to chat without screaming over music is hard to find these days... great menu with vegetarian options, the gnocchi is to die for, the buttermilk chicken burger was crispy, tasty and freshly cooked, loved the herby fries ... coffee was excellent and my friends loved the juices..lucky to live nearby, if they keep this standard up we will be frequent visitors...
I was lucky enough to have a lunch date with a friend at Mason and Bird this afternoon. I was so surprised how lovely it was. I had the chicken burger with slaw and chipotle, which was so delicious! The chicken was so tasty and the chipotle was really delicious! My friend had the gnocchi and said it was the best gnocchi she's had! The only thing I can suggest is that they put a little more signage up out near the road so you can easily locate the venue. Lovely spot, would highly recommend and will return!
Wow what a great spot for brunch. The mushrooms breakfast is huge and really tasty with the thick cut bacon. This cafe has a beautiful interior with the hardwood share table.
Couldn't be happier with this cafe! We shared the winter salad which included fennel, crispy bacon, tons of hazelnuts and a yummy dressing. We also added a serve of avocado to the salad. Had a coffee afterwards which was beautiful. Highly recommend this place. I will be back......next week actually!
A bit biased as we know the owner. Love the pasta and burgers. I'm addicted to the apple pie vegan smoothie. Could drink it everyday. Really yummy toasties as well.
It's hard to find a place that does good gnocchi.. (it used to be Cantina 663 but it's changed.. definitely not the same as it used to be).. today I found a good one! the pan roasted gnocchi with cauliflower, almonds and white balsamic from Mason & Bird.. it was soft, slightly chewy, and had a slightly crispy exterior... the almonds added good texture and all the flavours went really well together... I give it a 9/10. My friend ordered the mushroom burger which looked nice but I didn't want to ruin my gnocchi taste by having a bite so I just asked him how it was... he said "good" 😄 My chocolate almond milk smoothie was pretty delicious, but my friend's apple pie smoothie (which I tasted) lacked apple flavour but was still nice. The atmosphere at this cafe was just ok... it was very small with lots of people jammed in therefore quite loud... lucky we were sitting outside, but the views were of the visitors centre, library, and public toilet (there is more outdoor seating around the other side which have views of the road and trees).. I'd definitely go back to this cafe..the food was just amazing.
Went for lunch yesterday. I had the lamb papardelle which was excellent and my friend had the gnocchi which was possibly even better. Excellent service. Thoroughly recommended. Hope they open for dinner too sometime and create an evening ambience!
The Breakfast Confidential
+4.5
The cafe scene in the hills has exploded in the last few months. There is something about the area that is attracting some serious hospo talent. This includes chef Brad Johnston (ex head chef Print Hall Bar), his partner Jaclyn Noel and friend Matt Nguyen (both ex managers of Rockpool) who opened Mason & Bird.
Ticks all the boxes.
Great coffee, good food and super chilled out setting at the visitors centre. I Look forward to the opening hours to be extended to dinner
If you are willing to travel a bit further for food, this is worth the drive. I like the location, but like a pop up Cafe but permanent and is surrounded by the visitors centre. There's indoor and outdoor seating around the building. Started off with some vibrantly coloured lattes - beetroot and matcha. The matcha was thick and very green tea, but the beetroot took a bit of getting used to and contains ginger too - something different. Food wise we had the hand cut chips with house made ketchup - chips were well fried and seasoned with herbs, their ketchup was tasty! Then had the Roasted Sobrassada and Sebastian's Speck and Egg Burger. The burger was nice, good amount of meat and wasn't too oily or dry. But the best dish was the Sobrassada - bread stayed crispy, chorizo was delicious and cooked well, eggs were runny, tomatoes kept it fresh, all the flavours just worked well together! Quite satisfied with this place.
A really nice spot for an early Sunday lunch. The chicken salad with pear, honey roasted carrots, nuts and tahini was simply yummy. And I did cast longing looks at my husband's chicken burger because it looked decidedly wonderful. Wasn't able to sample any though because he engulfed it super quick. Coffee was nice and the staff were so friendly and efficient. Fantastic service is fleetingly rare in Perth so I really appreciated the fine service at Mason & Bird. Really recommend this cafe.
..This gnocchi dish was simply perfect. Fluffy, light, delicate pillows of pasta were cooked sensationally. The crust on from the pan frying worked wonders and the gnocchi was just so tasty on its own. The cauliflower, cheese and almonds were such a treat. I’m surprised that this whole dish was vegetarian really!
Nice homie place, was definitely keen to try the food here after a long hike. Coffee was nicely made, the service was very quick & friendly and the food was good. Definitely a nice relaxing place to go if your looking for somewhere peaceful.

Finally made it to the famous Mason & Bird! Well the must try is of course the beetroot latte. The waitress at Nic & Kolo told me they never brought it out cuz it was "disgusting". Needless to say that made me more curious of course! I think it's actually not that bad, nothing too special about it either.
We order vego on toast and braised pulled beef, they were delicious! Would totally go back to try the gnocchi and parpadelle!
High up in the hills, Mason & Bird are redefining small-town culinary standards.
Their Paleo Savoury Waffles were an easy choice, and not one that could possibly leave anyone disappointed: the poached eggs had firm whites and oozing yolks, exactly how they should be; the thinly-sliced mushrooms had been pan-fried to perfection, having minimal moisture left in them, giving a firm bite; the spiced nuts and seeds, while small in stature, provided a textural kick; and the romesco...well, I love my sauce, and there was plenty of romesco to go around!
The waffles themselves, the centrepiece of the dish, suffered from what all paleo bakers will know and understand: a lack of starch, causing them to be dry and brittle. Perhaps a little tapioca to bring some bounce? It really didn't detract from the dish, though, as all that romesco bound it altogether anyway!
In any case, the option of a paleo-inspired dish (don't start the "but cavemen wouldn't have eaten waffles!" argument) can only be a good thing, with even highly acclaimed chefs becoming more conscious of what they're offering on their menus from a health-perspective.
It was hard to choice of what else we wanted; we had two options, but were torn. So, we did the only logical thing we could do: we ordered both, obviously.
Out came the Freekeh and Cumin Burger with pickled carrot, iceberg lettuce, lemon yoghurt, and a side of thick hand cut chips. So simple, with so few ingredients, the burger was a testament to the greatness that can be achieved when you just stick to the basics. Even the lettuce - so many people opting for spinach in their burgers these days (yes, more nutrient-dense, I get it), but missing out on the unmistakeable crunch of iceberg.
The burger was followed by the unforgettable Triple Cheese Toastie, using two of the biggest slices of bread I've seen loaded with cheddar and red leicester on the inside, and grilled with kefalograviera on the outside. Without a doubt the most decadent toastie I've ever had, and one I'd more than happily head out to Kalamunda again for.
Special mention also needs to be made for the beetroot latte: it's still the first and only I've ever had, mainly because I haven't been able to find any other café offering a beetroot latte, but it was an interesting twist; I'll gladly have another when I head over for another toastie.
The menu offers all day brunch in the form of burgers, toasties, paleo waffles, housemade cocoa pops and some serious contenders in the pasta department. We were quick to decide on sharing two dishes – pan roasted gnocchi ($22.00) and braised lamb pappardelle ($24.00). I also added on a Simara organic matcha latte ($5.00) with almond milk ($0.60).
Have made a second trip to this lovely addition to our local eateries. Previously had burgers for lunch which were good with yummy handcut chips. This time, i had the roasted sobrassa which was very tasty and the tomatoes were so fresh. Fellow diner had the paleo waffles and this unusual dish tasted amazing. Very busy cafe with good service, can't wait for them to open for dinner.
Crowded little place on a wet August day. Inside was jammed and we took the last seat at a communal table - the rest were individual tables. I can imagine how nice it would be when the sun is shining and sitting outside is possible...
Anyway to the food - the pan roasted gnocchi with cauliflower purée and almonds ($22) was delicious and very moreish. The chicken & chipotle burger ($22) was tasty but essentially just a good burger, nothing too exciting here - not chicken breast but pieces of chicken for those interested. Both dishes were a nice lunch size. The handcut chips were great and flat white ($4) was well-made.
Cool decor but not really set up for kids/babies (if you're into that kind of thing) - no highchair offered, no kids menu unless you count the egg n toast for $8 and no milkshakes ahhhh - and the lady on the till could have smiled a bit more though forgiven as it was pretty hectic.
Kalamunda will love having this as its local - there are a few other things I'd like to try off the menu when I'm in the area. A solid 4 today but only because I had the gnocchi and not the burger.
