Review Charcoal Grill On The Hill - Kew

This is my second time here, thought I would try again as the last time I went I was pretty underwhelmed. Confirmed now that this is a very average steak restaurant. Not worth the $$$. We ordered a scotch fillet which was quite nice, but the eye fillet was too rare and chewy. Service was also really off for a place that is clearly trying to replicate a European fine dining experience. Unfortunately this missed the mark on many levels.

The steak was cooked well, but my steak had a lot of sinew. Everyone else's were fine though. I went with a group and when we got home and split the costs, it turns out we were charged for a $150 wagyu we didn't order.
Wandy Adventures
Went out for dinner here last night. It was the best steak we've ever had. Pricey but so worth the money. If you love your meat, you definitely should come for a visit. The meat is cook to perfection. So juicy and tender. No sauce needed really. Comes with a side salad and chips but didn't bother to take a photo. The meat is definitely the star. The service was excellent too. Thanks for having us.

I cannot fault my steak, it was cooked to perfection and like the waitress why do you need sauce? She was absolutely right. Is it me or was the waiter with glasses seem bored to be there. I know one of the younger waiters yawned but i was like him so tired yesterday. My dad's steak was not cooked medium well done as it was still pink but he loved the taste of it. Big tip if you dine here is to NOT EAT THE BREAD ROLLS, save your appetite for the tasty steak menu.
Nabila Aljunied
Really good steak. Like really good - one of the best I've had. Doesn't need any sauce. However I've taken a star off because 1. It's so expensive. 2. The salad they serve with the steak was unremarkable.
Bob Nordlinger
Best steak I have ever had ... high quality meat cooked to perfection. Expensive? Yes, so I definitely won't go there every night but it is definitely now my go-to place for a top steak. Well worth the price.
Nunzio Bagnato
Quality cut meats, moist grilled steaks, Tuscan vegetables and an elite wine list. Vibe is a buzzing venue with good energy. Service was brilliant too, a good laugh.
Vin Sadhai
One of the best steak houses in Melbourne
Andrew Coghlan
It's my go to restaurant - best steak in Melbourne, and a fantastic wine list.
Paul Feher
We have been here 6 times over the past 5 months and this is hands down the beast steak in Melbourne. Service is always fantastic very attentive best place!
Peter Assel
Good but my steak was raw not medium. But the best chevap in the world redeemed the situation. Still better out there in Melbourne...
Mara Potočnjak-Šola
Took my partner there for my Birthday. Seating is very cramped at the back of the restaurant. We were not offered any mustards by the waiting staff. I also forgot they don’t serve sauces either. My partner ordered a 400grm porterhouse which arrived butterflied. He was not impressed and thinks we’ve had better.
Siros Disthabanchong
The best steak in Town ! Love the service and quality of the meat.Superb 👍🏻👍🏻

First time here and will definitely come back for more. Everything was perfect.. best red wine I've had, meat was cooked to perfection and good quality meat as well. Service was great too.

Fantastic, great steak, amazing wine and top level service - will be back and recommend
Ahmed Abdulwahed
Best steaks ever they just melt in your mouth. I highly recommend this restaurant
Rohit Tipnis
One of the finest steak had so far , keep up the high quality standard
Frank Leo
Magnificent piece of meat cooked medium minus a 500g porterhouse that looked a million bucks on the plate and tasted just unbelievable. Cannot wait to go back.
Andrew Liddicoat
I have been coming here for some time now, why? When we arrive the greeting is warm and familiar, Fabian on the grill never fails to recommend the best choice and cooks it perfectly. The wine list is as extensive as it is diverse, a must. A particular note to the selection of burgundy on site, most budgets and palates can be satisfied.
Gerry Glover
Service first rate , steaks are the best
Dale Brittain
The best steak in Melbourne and a wine list to match
Tony Perkin
Always superb. One of the best wine lists in Melbourne, if not Australia.
Andy Kalleske
Hands down the best steak I've had since visiting Argentina! Thanks team Charcoal for the awesome service!
Agron Tairi
Best steaks in Victoria Staff are amazing and the atmosphere inviting

Came along in a group of seven, with a prior booking, but we were seated near the entry and against the bar, a little uncomfortable as it appeared that they squeezed us in, but we were still looking forward to a good meal. It's been a couple years since our last visit and still nothing had been done to modernize he interior as it really does look dated. Our server appeared to be very uninterested in her work and did not make us feel welcomed. In actual fact we could clearly hear her and the guy on the grill bickering all night... this is my area and you're always on the phone... not very professional at all. We had oysters that were great as was the duck sausage. The Chevapchichi were OK, nothing special. We had six serves of beef and one pork and unfortunately not one of us thought that we had a great piece of meat. All of us with beef thought that our meat was slightly under done though tender, yet most did not finish their meal. I was disappointed in my Waygu as it was chewy and at room temperature at best and was not one of the better meals I've had. Desserts were all good and were the usual old favorites, my strawberry crepes were excellent. Nothing has changed here in such a long time that I'm finding it difficult to justify a return visit without the injection of some modernization to the restaurant and its menu. Oh and they charge a fee if you use AMEX here, come on so many other places absorb this charge.

A group of us came here for dinner on a Saturday. The place was packed but luckily, we made a booking in advance and were seated upstairs. For starters, we ordered sausage platters to share. The duck sausage was my favourite but everything else was mediocre at best. I ordered a medium rare Wagyu 6+ scotch fillet and when it arrived to the table, it was room temperature which was a let down. At least the steak was well rested? I found the steak to be a little too rare for my liking and for that price, I've had better steaks elsewhere. The sides however, were nice. The fries were crispy and the lettuce was well dressed. The sticky date pudding for dessert was the saving grace for the dinner. To sum up, this place is highly overrated and the steaks weren't great.

Still my favourite steak place in Melbourne. Steak and a wine list that puts most other restaurants to shame. Only bad thing is it can get pricey if you order too much wine but that’s probably my own fault. Flame grilled goodness.
Steven Gu
Charcoal grill on the hill in Kew. One of my favourite steak houses in Melbourne. It is all about the quality of the steak and simple grilled with salt and pepper. Good place to dine in and open for many years now.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Porterhouse

The key difference between this place and other steak houses is the flame grilled, smokiness of the steaks. We ordered a porterhouse and a wagyu rump, and strangely I preferred the porterhouse being more juicy and tender. They were both cooked medium in this case. I also had a chicken fillet, and whilst this was good, we felt that it was way over priced for what you get. The chips were better the last time I came here also and some not completely cooked through. A good meal, but not great one.
Nick
Probably one of the worst places
Never experienced such rudeness and poor service before
At the end of the night the waiter decided to put through his own tip
Didn’t bother asking nicely if we would like to pay a tip just decided to tip himself
Height of rudeness and arrogance
A little respect would go a long way and some basic customer service
Do yourself a favour and pick any other place in Melbourne except this !!!
Hungry Big Potato Bear
If you are after just a piece of simple good steak, this is the place to go. They specialise in just serving the best, juicy and tender steak. The prices are a little high but worth it. Restaurant is very cozy.
Daniel
If a 700gm steak is what you’re looking for then you’ve come to the right place. This is without a doubt the worst vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Kew. For an intimate dinner or a raucous meal, head to the Hill.
Ben B
Beautiful example of the best quality meats, when you order a giant steak but your mouth keeps watering for every single piece & not wanting it to end you know they are doing something right! Only reason I haven't given this place a 5 star is because it is just slightly on the costly side if you get things like entrees etc as well.

Will definitely come back.
Blefdot
SO happy my friend took me here. Best steak I've had in Melbourne since Vlado's passing (R.I.P) thank so much for keeping the formula simple guys - quality 10/10! Ill be back

Charcoal grill on the hill is eye candy for meat lovers. Upon entry you are presented with a Carnivores delight. A showcase of the great quality cuts of meat on offer ready for you to choose and devour. The menu is not huge but what is on offer is sure to please. The steaks we had were tender and cooked to perfection. Great little place to try. Two thumbs up.
Eat This Eat That
Best steak I have eaten in a long time. Enthusiastic service by servers. Delicious 300gram Scotch Fillet cooked medium rare, tender and melts in your mouth. Paired with a glass of fragrant Shiraz from Atzee’s Corner. It was a great experience, will be back for sure.
Sweet.connoisseur
Favourite steak place in Melbourne. If you’re after perfectly cooked steak, this is the place you must visit because they never disappoint.

Love the perfect pairing of a simple salad & freshly cooked chips!

Food: 5/5
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 4/5

Would I recommend this restaurant to family and friends? Yes, absolutely!
Would I be visiting again? Yes, without a doubt!

Monday 6th November 2017 at 7pm.
Simply Excellent.
This was a fabulous meal.
Everything was simple and Devine.
The meal was prepared without any pretentiousness and delivered to the very highest level.
We started with fresh oysters 👍🏻
For mains we had a rare porterhouse and a medium rare scotch fillet. These were so soft and delicious 😋
For desserts the sticky date Pudding was fluffy like none I’ve had before. The affogato was delivered without flaw 🍨
Good Food, Good Mood
Pictured is one of the most succulent steaks I’ve ever eaten 😍👌🏼 We had oysters (super fresh), and I ordered a 300g scotch fillet, medium rare. Ambience was homey. Service was pretentious. The steak was good enough to get me back in though.
MrMena
One of the best steaks in Melbourne, the charcoal taste was brilliant. Well marinated with spices, the pork sausages are also a must try. I'll be back soon
Dee Dee
I reckon this is the best steak I have had in Melbourne. The place was filled up quickly and all walked in has reservation. Their steak was cooked right where medium rare is still pink in the middle.

Waiters were friends and sticky date pudding was superb! We will definitely go back again!

This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in Melbourne. Not only was the place over-priced, the food was average and the service was cold, dismissive and deceiving. The steaks were oily, the sides unimaginative and the bread cheap and dry. But nothing compared to the service. Although the dining room was barely a third full (it was a Tuesday) we were made to feel uncomfortable about not indulging in glass of wine which started at the $16 mark. Perhaps because of this, we were charged without any warning, for still water at $7 a bottle which we assumed was going to be tap water. The staff would hurriedly pour this water into our glasses at every opportunity as to sell more bottles of it, all without asking us. After the bill was issued, I noticed that the waiter was pouring jugs of water at all other tables... was it because we failed to order wine that we were charged for water? They still managed to charge $135 dollars for a 2 pax on quiet Tuesday. I myself have worked part-time in the restaurant industry for years and have never been so appalled by a venue's service and poor value.

Come here for family dinners all the time. Steaks are always spot on, service is fantastic and wait staff are very good. The cheese board has a lovely selection and the wine guy (sorry can't remember his name) has very good taste and is very friendly. Always come here for special occasions and will continue to do so. :)

We had a group of 6 booked. We were placed up stairs which lacked the atmosphere of downstairs. Felt a bit like we were just shoved out of the way and the second cousins. Food was consistently good but don't think it was up to the price. Wine list very extensive but again, very pricey. Young girl that served us was very friendly but did not really have handle on the wine or menu. Had to reorder drinks sevetal times and chase things up. Overall, nice place, good food but the experience didn't really live up to the price.....

This is definitely the best steak restaurant in Melbourne. I've been coming to this restaurant for the past 14 years and have never had a bad meal.
Their steaks are cooked to perfection and their sticky date pudding is fantastic!
The staff are amazing and normally remember what we like order even though we only go a couple of times a year.
I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a great steak and a fantastic wine list.
It's a bit pricy, but it is worth it
AaronN
The steak here is admittedly delicious, and one of the best I've had in town. Truly good. Its a shame that the sides are so average, dragging the score down. IThe chips seem to be of the frozen variety unless I'm mistaken, which is a bit disappointing. Desserts were hit and miss, the sticky date pudding was a hit and the lemon lime tart was a miss.
Liv
The best place I've ever been for a steak. Great hidden gem in Kew. If you're serious about steaks this place is a must. Would recommend to anyone
Jonathan Ong
best steak in melbourne!
everything else (sides, service, desserts) is average at best. but the steak is really superb, the char on the meat is great.

Ate here a couple of weeks ago. Steak and wine were great and couldn't fault any of them. But frozen fries in a place like this. I can't really understand why is so hard to find places that cut their own f... potatoes when they want to charge 50$ for a steak. Aren't they better? And red wines by the glass starting at 15 $...
Abby
Mine - in fact my whole family's - favourite restaurant in Melbourne! Cannot fault anything here. In the countless amount of times going here we've probably experienced only one single poor quality steak. The simple but addictively tasty sides of 2 salads and fries couldn't accompany better!
If sommelier Dejan can't find you a wine exactly to your taste on the huge wine menu I'd be extremely surprised, he definitely knows his stuff!!
Josephine
Steak & wine - what more do you want!? Had the wagyu skinless sausage which was very flavoursome. The eye fillet steak was cooked beautifully, medium rare. The sides were great to help cut through all the meat. Staff were attentive. Downside was the 45 min wait for the food, but that's probably a given for a Saturday night.
Mark Halse
Had a special "Tomahawk" on the bone. Succulent and cooked to perfection with excellent wine and cheese to finish off. Service was great and whole experience was enjoyable
Slightly Pricey but the quality was worth it.
If you enjoy steak, this is a definite must

I dont know where the best steakhouse in Melbourne is...but Ive been eating at this Kew steakhouse for over 20years and I reckon it would come close...if not, definitely be in the top 3 or 4 in Melbourne.

My favourite is their 1kg porterhouse new york cut steak.
Mark
Amazing steaks, great wine selection and good consistent service every time. This is our local steak joint, we love the old school decor too. A must try!
CL
Great steaks and chips! Loved their scotch fillet every time and also need to recommend their sticky date pudding. Best I've ever had! I had a Pinot for wine which is the only one they have, it's perfect!

Ate here last Saturday for dinner for the second time, the first time was about 3 years ago. One criticism was that I found the steak poorly cooked as it was visibly burnt and every bite tasted very bitter. Not sure if it was because I was the last customer of the night and their grill was wearied. The salad and fries were just average but I didn't really care because the main focus was the steak which was disappointing. I won't return anytime soon as there are other steakhouses that I want to try out
Tony Kieu
They specialise in steaks and must say they cook a very fine steak. Their wine list is absolutely exceptional and the staff are very knowledgeable about the right parings between your steak/food and wine.

The wine list is far more comprehensive than the menu I'd say.

The Steak is of a reasonable size and excellent quality, cooked perfectly.

My only criticism is that the steak your order is not so inclusive of other things like a salad or chips that you'd see at many other restaurants that serve more on quantity.

To complete your meal definitely order some side dishes to complement your steak otherwise you're going to finish your beautiful steak way too quick to be able to savour the wonderful flavour.

Add in a fine red wine to match the heartiness of the steak like a Shiraz or a Cabernet Sauvignon to slow down you meal. This place is best enjoyed slowly.
Stu
Had a great meal here on Saturday night. We ordered oysters, salmon and duck sausage to start and they were all great. The steaks for our mains were cooked to perfection, came with amazing side salads and chips (no one went hungry). They also have a very impressive wine list. Also have to put in a special mention to the amazing staff, really friendly and helpful!
Patricia
One of the best steak we had in Melbourne! Love the Scotch fillet and it's a definitely a restaurant I would return when I'm craving for good steaks!
Alice C
Great steak place - have not been there for a few years, returned last night and decor looked the same. Service was quick and staff were friendly. My scotch fillet was cooked to perfection - well done with a bit of pinkness. Loved the golden fried crispy chips!

GOOD: always love coming here, though we are biased because the waiters know us and we got engaged at this restaurant... but well before that, their steaks are out of this world. Their signature charcoal burnt taste hits the spot every single time.

BAD: sometimes it gets busy and the service level drops slightly, but the main issue is that once you eat here no other steakhouse will be able to meet your lofty new standards.

TASTY: scotch fillet done rare-to-medium.
Andrew Hubbard
My go to steak restaurant in Melbourne. A little bit of a trek out to Kew is well worth it. You will find both fine diners and those finished from a day on site. Steaks need no sauces and are cooked to perfection every time. The staff are almost too friendly (especially making sure you have a few drinks) but are also great to tell you which cut and how it should be cooked. Get here
Tharik
A busy restaurant is always a good sign. Especially if it's on a weekday. So I was kind of excited to have my dinner here. The staff are extremely friendly giving suggestions on the drinks and steak. They don't shy to make small talks and make you feel comfortable.
The bread they serve is very fresh so is the coleslaw and lettuce they serve.
The fries are pretty good.
I had ordered for the eye fillet steak and asked them to get a medium cook on it. The steak is cooked in a charcoal grill (as the name suggests). So it has the taste and essence of a BBQ meat on a camping day. For those who don't like the chargrilled taste on the steak might not like it a lot. But for me, it was good. The meat was cooked and seasoned well.
Food Hunter
Busy local charcoal steak restaurant, with old school decor and atmosphere. Entree, we ordered the wagu sausages (soo good) and the smoked salmon was nice. Mains- I ordered the Scoth Fillet (recommended for those who enjoy well done steak- I asked for med-well). Don't start me about how steak should be eaten :P This is how I enjoy eating it. My steak had a really nice char taste to it and was still very tender. Our meals came with shared salad and chips. The salad was a let down, very basic and low budget and chips were nice and crunchy but nothing special. For dessert we ordered the sticky date pudding. This is our favourite dessert to share but unfortunately this is the only place I have to say was the worst sticky date I have eaten. When the dish came out i was like WOW there so much sauce *big smiles because most places are tight with it. But in this case, it was the sauce who let down the dish, it had a unique taste to it and not creamy at all. I feel for the price they charge (~$170 for two 2 entrees, 2 mains, 1 dessert, 1 glass of wine and 1 sparkling water) they need to improve on the presentation of the dishes and update their serving plates.

Two night sessions on Friday so you have to eat and leave if you book the early session. The service is quick so you have plenty of time to enjoy your meal and not rushed. More importantly, the food is seriously good.

Food: 4 Oysters = just that on a plate - absolutely nothing else. Chefs recommended rump steak. A thin slice of tough meat. Accompaniments - minimal. Price = unbelievably high for what was below average, minimal servings size food. Service: At least 1 if not 2 staff per customer. Overall: Overpriced, pretentious. Fortunately, attended as Clients choice based on experience from over 10 years ago otherwise would have been an incredibly embarrassing and expensive poor experience.
Robyn Harris Dimech
We had a lovely evening here. The staff were very friendly as well as helpful when ordering our meals as well as wines. Meals arrived within 15 min and were delicious. Only thing I would say was the dessert were fairly average and the tables were extremely close together.
Let’s Eat!
So, I was craving a steak for about 2 months! It had to be a good steak!
I've been passing Charcoal Grill on the Hill for a very long time, it's walking distance from home.
Finally, we decided to dine here tonight.

We walked in and were greeted by a pleasant young woman who was happy to accommodate us even though we didn't have a booking.
The place filled up quickly.
We had the duck sausage and a half a dozen oysters to start. We also had a bottle of Pinot, a steak each and a sticky date to share.
The team seemed enthusiastic enough, but things felt a little confused.

My $120.00, 300g wagu steak was melt in your mouth delicious!
Purists, serving just your steak on a plate, no fancy accompaniments to take away from the flavour of the meat.
I can certainly appreciate this!
I have only a couple of negatives.......
The chips that came with the steak. They came out and I luuuurve chips with my steak, but they smelt and tasted like something else. They had a sweet, not savoury taste and smell. It was like having doughnuts with my steak.
I asked the waiter and found out that they were frying the chips and their doughnuts in the same oil. He said "yes" and just walked off!
What a shame.....

Dessert came out. A Sticky date pudding with suggested matching sherry.
A staple dessert and also one of my faves!
The plate came out with a hair in the sauce. We politely called the waiter over and showed him. He didn't say anything and just took the plate away. It returned about 30 seconds later. I'm sure it wasn't a fresh serve.....

Now, I understand that sometimes things JUST happen, but no apology, comment or compensation for the chips or dessert.
A slight disappointment when we paid $350.00 for dinner, especially when you consider what's coming out of the food industry. The quality and expectations of food is going up and up!
Acknowledging something going wrong is better than ignoring it.
I really wanted to take my father here, but sadly not sure it's worth a return visit.

The steak was great, the chips not so great, the service also not so great.

Not worth $350.00. I can dine at a chef's hat restaurant......

My girlfriend had been wanting to try this place and we had finally gotten round to coming here for our Valentines Dinner. We had heard many good things about the place and were fairly excited.

Starters were fairly average and the presentation was very simple, they had a small mix up with our order but nothing major our waitress was more than helpful enough to get it fixed up for us. We had the oysters and the sausage for starters -nothing really special.

Our steaks came out and I was very excited; we had both gotten our steaks
medium rare but they came out very under cooked. We asked the waitress to have the kitchen re-do them a bit more for us and they were happy to but now our steaks were pretty black on the outside and not enjoyable. Chips were also way overcooked and salad was plain.

Maybe it was an off night for them being so busy on Valentines but definitely a big let down.
Beatrice
Their standard has dropped. Used to be one of my favorite steakhouse in melbourne. We had a bad one before and thought it was more a once off thing, but after tonight I doubt I'll be back. We ordered our standards, scotch fillet medium rare with a 375ml bottle of Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz. Like seriously, we order this everytime, it can't go wrong. Right? No, the steak was cooked well but you can tell the quality of meat is bad. It was not fresh, you can't taste the beef, and it looks and tastes at least a few days old. Just like the specials on the bottom shelf at Woolworths/Coles that is a day away from going bad. The waitress said it was probably cos the meat wasn't as marbled as before. C'mon now, who are you trying to fool? This used to be top notch! If you have changed supplier, this clearly isn't working for you. I wouldn't even bother uploading a photo cos smartphones nowadays enhance everything.

From all accounts of Charcoal Grill on the Hill, it sounded like a fine institution. As far as institutions, this one is certainly very old-school. The shopfront and the doorway is tiny, the walls inside are dark crimson, and painting in gold frames adorn the walls. We were a large group of 12, and we were seated at a table up the carpeted stairs, in the even more formal looking dining room.

Was there last Friday! Terrible experience! Never been told there were 2 sessions at Friday night booking. The waitress keep pushing us to order the food and keep reminding us and other diners that we have to finish the steak within 1 hour! The worst Sommelier (or maybe should not called him Sommelier because he doesn't introduce the wine list or recommend the wine at all), he is arrogant and will not smile or talk to you if you order a bottle of cheap wine. Will not come back and will not recommend others.
CityWorker88
Been meaning to come here for a long time now and my wife booked it recently for my birthday.

Being a weekday, the place was half full and judging from some of the conversations and people, a lot were regulars and I can understand why.

I had the eye fillet medium rare and my wife had the scotch fillet medium (preggers) and they were both very very tasty. Side of chips and salad that comes with the meat comes in handy to fill you up.

Family run and the service was ok, can't fault them, but we generally don't ask for much anyway.
PC
Before I rave about how good the steak ( had the porterhouse med rare... Yum) was, let me just say....try the truffle infused cheddar! It is amazing! Make sure you leave room after your perfectly cooked steak and delicious bottle of Durif to sample the cheese and try the cheddar! A great night out!
Tales Of Rose
Love it here - first came 3 years ago, still just as good now :) great venue, easy for a mid-week steak or for an occasion. Service is excellent.
Tanner79
Been coming here for the last 10 years and not sure if the restaurant has changed hands or it's a new chef (maybe neither) but the steaks are not what the used to be. The last couple of times this year it's been very disappointing. It's a shame because it used to be great. Time to find a new steak restaurant.
BZC
Good steak, small place, very old fashioned, service is average. Sausage is overpriced, grilled vegetables are terrible, however it is a steakhouse, so if only to review its steak, it is a 4.5, but everything else is a 3.
Shane Lucas
This place has a reputation for some of the best steak in Melb and of the 10+ time I have been here I aged every time. Really well aged and creamy steaks. Service is casual by good. Go here
HH24
I would have to say the best steaks in town. There's no mucking around at this place it's just simple quality meat at its absolute fineness
HungryHayley
Have always loved coming here for an awesome steak! Consistently great food albeit wine list is a spurge but worth the $. Entrées and desserts not the forte but the steak is what makes you come back for more
Nithya Nagarajan
An old-school steakhouse that have mastered their craft over the course of their existence in Kew. The list of cuts is comprehensive but you have nothing to fear, the staff are incredibly approachable and are trained to run through the menu with you. The wine list, equally impressive in length, has a pairing for every palate. Stay miles away from this place if you are vegetarian though!
Fred Nerkensterker
Been here a heap of times, it's great food, solid service, in maybe 10years of going here, maybe had one average steak, always have the Scotch - I don't stray! It's awesome. I don't drink wine but if you do there is heaps of choice but ring lots of Tango ($$$) some over $1k !! Strawberry crepes are super and the chevaps, it's nearly always full so book. They bring a couple of bowls of salad-y looking stuff, but why?? Good job.
Robert Rompante
Overrated and over priced. Prefer squires hands down. Paid $17 for a sausage from Vic market, even thou it tasted good it was a sausage. Steaks are cooked well but for the price I would expect my own serve of fries.
Foodandwinefan
Not all it's cracked up to be really. Oysters were full of bits of shell, the sides served with the steak were a let down. Tho the steak quality was undeniable, the service was average. Bottled water was a wrought too!
Finding Resonance
This place is amongst the crème de la crème of Melbourne's steakhouses, right up there with Rockpool, La Luna and Steer(on a good day though!). The steaks are given the good ole charcoal treatment, and you can pick the size of your steak, which is a big plus for me. Granted, the sides are rather ordinary and limited in terms of selection, but on a steak-centric basis this place is truly the bomb.
Out & About
Still one of melbournes top 5 steak restaurants. I fricken love this place. So much better than Vlados & with a much better quality of beef. mmmmmmm... beef.
Come here get a dozen oysters followed by a big 900gm steak with chips & salad. smashing. So good, steak is well seasoned & perfectly cooked everytime. Just needs musterds. nom nom nom

Best steak I've had in Melbourne. Love the Chevapchichi and Duck sausages they are delicious ! Great selection of wines and staff are always friendly, definetly recommend this place !!
Marcus Pau
The duck sausage is my favorite. The steak cook perfectly. Staff are wonderful. Cost is moderate if you value quality. Highly recommend place to go.

A little disappointed with my experience. No doubt the quality of the steak was great but a lot of the fats on my scotch fillet wasn't rendered and were stringy and inedible. Service was great and attentive but for the price I could get better steaks at Rare or Steer.

Realy Great 2/3 times. Been there 3 times now, Fast service steak was juicy and cooked very well, service was good.
They try to upsell a little too much. Felt I needed to say "no" a few too many times.

On the 3 visit we went during peak hour(about 7pm) service was slow which is understandable but our steaks were cooked very unevenly
Mine was overcooked on 1 side, perfect on the other. My partners was really under cooked on 1 side and perfect on he other side....
Seems like they really crammed a few too many at a time?

I would go again but i suggest you go when its not so busy (After 8pm). They open till 10pm

Never going back again if there's a choice. $48 for a piece of so called medium rare steak that is overly charred and cause the meat to be near to well done state. There's clear inconsistency as my some of my friends got it right, slightly under and cooked. Too long of a wait for food ended up feeling the pangs in tummy. You would think that the long wait was because of some pretty presentation on your plate...oh no it's just a piece of meat on a white plate. It's my first time there and probably will break a friendship if i am ever to be asked to go there again. I am willing to pay $75 steak at Rockpool than to be served steak that is worse than the ones i cook from my own Barbi.

Rip Off and Plus GST. This place is a ripoff , charges minimum $48
for a 300 gm steak which comes with 1 cos lettuce leaf per person and a tiny serve of grated cabbage.
The steak is ok admittedly , the wine list is extensive but way over the top for price.

And they even have a little surprise for their customers at the end, one final slug, they add GST to the bill one last wack before you depart.
Can't remember a restaurant having meals that do not include gst.
Never mind they get away with it.

Over rated, over priced, suburban quality but@ city price, $38 for 4 small pieces of pork chops, rips off!! $14 for 3 pieces zucchini, one mushroom cut in quarter,2 slices of capsicum. All the dish wear are older than foodcourt .come on ,can't only make $$$ and not spent $$$ for the shop. Go thur the kitchen to the toilet.. Definitely not going back . The wrost dining experience in my life. With this amount of money, I am pretty sure I would have lots of other choices but far better!!nearly cry after went home.

Having written up a huge list before the bestie arrived, the following ten days were spent ticking places off. Here’s a little teaser of where we went… We went gone straight from the airport to brunch at Dead Man Espresso, followed by a big night of steak and wine at the ever reliable Charcoal Grill. Always a constant craving, Charcoal Grill on the Hill consistently delivers for blue/rare steak and a fantastic wine list, not to mention those crunchy fluffy chips. Can never have enough brunch, so we brought ctan to her new local, Touchwood, for mork salted caramel hot chocolate and after our mains, a shared dish of whole meal waffles. As the last of our group to try vue de monde, the anticipation was high and cocktails at Lui Bar was the perfect starter. Proper post to follow! Our love of Sichuan hotpot from uni days was not forgotten as we made a trip down memory lane at Dainty Sichuan. A daytrip to Red Hill included a lunch stopover at Red Hill Epicurean for wood fired pizzas, zucchini flowers and seafood pasta before a sunny afternoon of wine tasting. Can proudly say she managed to tick more items off the list, such as N2 Gelato, Hawthorn Common, Cumulus Inc, Mr Hendricks, Mabrown and City Wine Shop (not pictured). A fair effort for a short 10 days. Many more posts to follow of our lunches and dinners together during a crazy whirlwind trip!

Steak Me Out
One of the most well rounded steaks I’ve ever had; it was perfectly cooked, beefy, creamy, tender and just perfectly balanced flavour.

The wine list, which is among the best listed in Australia, will have enough on it to see you pick out a different bottle on each visit through the remainder of your lifetime. The food, a focused yet extensive list of cuts ranging from porterhouse to eye from standard (Brilliant) to waygu (Sublime). Co-owner and Master Sommelier Dejan Derbogosijan is quick to point out that the Wagyu on offer is the real deal, 300 day aged meats cured on site, not like many of the imitations on offer around town. Even the starters, such as the famed Chevap’s are from Wagyu trimmings and are salty, decadent slabs of beef that could be the sole

The prices are fairly high for food that is decidedly un-fancy. The steaks were worth every cent; however the rest of the offering was a bit lacking. I get the whole no-sauce-for-good-steak thing but it would be nice to have a few proper sides other than chips and lettuce. I will definitely come back but next time I won’t bother with entrees or desserts. Now I have to go to Rockpool and see how it stacks up…

Charcoal Grill on the Hill has long been a favourite of mine. I have fond memories of visiting this restaurant in my adolescence and eagerly devouring their 900 gram scotch fillets. What amazes me to this day is the mastery with which the steak is cooked.

Woweee that steak, one of the best I've had

Quality food. If you're into steak then this is the place. Wine list is pretty extensive. Cheese platter was nice. Not many options if you are not steak eater.

Still the best Chargrilled Steak in Melbourne. I would estimate that I have been here over 10 times in the last few years. The steak is consistently good, so consistent it gets my top vote for a chargrilled steak and I use this as my benchmark. Its not perfect as a restaurant, the steak is hand cut so yes they may vary if you compare yours to your mate, the sides are limited, I assume to make the steak the star and quality of service varies massively. The place is often packed, loud and cramped. The wine list is huge, thats not necessarily a bad thing but it does mean you need to know a little about wine, that said, if the owner is there he will give you his honest opinion on a good wine, often cheaper than you were prepared to pay. Its not fine dining by far, but it doesn't pretend to be. If you love steak and red wine and are prepared to pay above the average for the quality then treat yourself. If you are a vegetarian, can take or leave steak and red wine and want a fine dining experience there are other places that you will enjoy more.

Good steak, there is no doubt but the place is too packed and too noisy. Wine list is out of control and the waitress push you to buy expensive wine and have no wine knowledge.

Watch Out!. In all honesty, good steaks.. BUT

Major fail with the sizes of the steaks. Couple of weeks back, a large group of us went for dinner. And just because there was more than 8 people, we were forced to order an entree and a main.

Majority of us ordered the same 300g eye/scotch fillets. The sizes are significantly different on most of the steaks!

If you have been buying steaks from the market week in week out, you can estimate the sizes of how big a 300g steak is. It is blatantly obvious that some of the steaks served here were around 200 or under!

Yes, there are many steakhouses in Melbourne these days. And with just a steak with small sides at places like Steer or Rare or Squires Loft, you will be full. However, at Charcoal Grill, it leaves you still hungry and cheated. It makes you wonder if you ordered the >AUD80 wagyu is a genuine wagyu or not.

Oh, not to mention the ridiculous one lettuce per person and really tiny entrees as most have mentioned as well as the over priced wine list.

Clever but fraudulent service.. Overall, an extremely negative experience. 300 gm Scotch Fillet MR was good, above average for sure, where I like mine slightly charcoal and had to have the 'beef' taste consistent from a clearly heavily salted crust to centre (Squire's Loft in the city recently was incredible only at the edge, and just tasted bland towards the centre of a bone-in rib-eye, not sure how that was possible but miracles do happen it seems). The 200 gm Eye Fillet my friend had was without doubt the most flavorless piece of meat one could even call meat.

The most trying experience of the night however was that the waiter pointedly telling us we could not order steaks to share. I had to ask twice to be sure of what I heard. Now, make no mistake, I'm out to eat and to eat well and well aware (and supportive actually) of paying premium price for premium fare. So no, it wasn't about trying to freeload a dish if that's what you might suspect and call it (though my Squire's Loft experience was during a promo half price bill ... hahaha!).

But you know what? To give you some context, at the risk of sounding like a know-it-all (which I would hate), I, being a steaklover, have had the fortunate experience of dining at some of the world's finest and most expensive steakhouses (In New York alone my go to's include Luger's, Wolfgangs, Del Frisco and Smith & Wollensky, all the way to Chicago and Texas, and all the way to Asia, where Singapore's Cuts, Hong Kong's Bistecca, Steakhouse , Mortons and Blue Butcher rule). Mostly personal expense too (some footed by work, no complaints). And other than serving up great great slabs of meat prepared with passion, it is there for all to share, as much or as little as one would like. And if that wasn't enough to make one's night, then wait for the inevitable tug of war for the rib-eye bone left in the middle of the serving plate.

So where does this no steak sharing policy come from? Other than absolutely murdering the mate-steak night experience, what if one's dining mate for whatever reason really does have capacity issues? The mind boggles... Oh, but wait. I just noticed the bottom of the menu ..."A MAIN COURSE MINIMUM CHARGE OF $28 PER PERSON APPLIES". Interesting. Now I get it.

Let's see: 300 gm (standard starting size) steaks on average seem to be around $47. So this clever little 'Melbourne Institution' has got it worked out .... it wasn't enough that one had to spend at least $28 on anything, but according to the waiter(*) you couldn't share a steak. So say for a table for two, one couldn't just get to the $28 per head average with sharing one 300gm steak ($47), and a $14 entree and a $14 dessert, but ... you cannot share your steak. So, if both parties really wanted a piece of steak, it means forking out for a further $39 for the piece of 200 gm cardboard branded as Eye Fillet (the cheapest steak offering on the menu, I now realise, for good reason). So in the aftermath, one by default, even before considering the wine, entree and dessert, the average cost would have to be well above the $28 per head minimum.

(*) But wait, I can hear other readers saying you tosser, the policy as written on the menu is that each person needed a main meal as a minimum, and not that you cannot share your steak, or that you must only order steaks. Yes, you are right. Now, I can't deny I'm a tosser but I have this to share with you too. Back at the restaurant when ordering, after the waiter reinforced the view that we could not share one steak, he very quickly directed us to that 200 gm cardboard ... err ...eye fillet, as in a favour to us so we satisfy restaurant policy. Which we did, to our regret. Also, not that we would have, and I'm guessing for many people specifically coming to a steakhouse, there was a Chicken Fillet on offer at ... $29, just above the $28 minimum (chaaaa---chiiing!!!!). Cheeky.

Anyway, as it turned out, my bill that included those two bits of meat, a duck sausage (good taste actually - see, I can be objective) and two pinot noirs was a hefty $128, so $64 per head. Chaaa-chiiinng!! The Grill keeps on a-grilling into the modern age. But no way, not again from this household.

Too expensive. Good food & wine & as a local I wish I could keep going but just too expensive. Much better value elsewhere.

Awesome! Ate here last night and everything was great. Will definitely return! Beautifully cooked, delicious steak, superb wine and awesome cheese to finish.

SOLID STEAK. Have been a few times now, never disappoints. Ordered a medium rare Scotch fillet (500gm) this time, came out very quickly despite it being moderately packed. Was cooked a medium rare exactly the same as always. Served like a true steak with no sides and grilled wonderfully. Grilled vegetables were a little dry and probably not the greatest value as you get next to nothing. Chips were decent, but you go for the steak and not the entrees. Would recommend to everybody.

Brilliant. Great entree. Terrific porterhouse for main and fantastic wine list. We'll be back!

Best steak in Melbs... trust me I know. I've been to them all and this is consistently the best steak in Melbourne. Try get the more expensive ones on the menu you won't regret it. Excellent.

My family ate here but i didnt. Giving a review based on family members experience on sat night march 29. 2 brothers, wives and 2 other adults dined.pork fillets not good. steaks way over priced,1 cos lettuce per plate, chips were good.3 oysters natural on plate-nothing as a presentation(ie rock salt or something to stop them moving around whenslid onto table) staff looking glum.huge wine glasses with what looks like a ridiculously small amount of wine inside .could have been a proper measure in a normal sized glass but who is to know?iknow they wont be back and I guess I wont go there, sorry .

Best steaks in Melbourne. Have been eating here weekly and always on the mark. Steaks always cooked to perfection, chips are always cooked in fresh oil and the simple sides are great. For those who want sauce with your steak you are better off going to other steak joints where a backpacker who knows nothing about quality food let alone quality steak will serve you. Wine list extensive and cheese selection is great. Best thing - still family owned and operated where you always feel welcomed. Highly recommended.

EXTREMLY DISSAPPOINTED. Dinner Review
Took my wife and a daughter to a Birthday Dinner. This restaurant spoiled my birthday. The steaks were OK but not exceptional. We were given a small bowl of chips (not enough for 3 persons) plus tasteless coleslaw and a leaf of lettuce. Most other restaurant even pubs who charge 50% less for a steak offer mash potatoes or baked potatoes and a salad or vegetables (beans, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.)
We also ordered a cheese platter. We paid $36 for 3 tiny slices of cheese that did not weigh more that 20-30 grams together. My wife, who works in a Deli believes than the cheese we were provided is not worth more than a dollar. This was the worst rip off I ever experienced in a restaurant.
Value for money - 1 (out of 10)

Overpriced. No sauces were available. Table service was terrible. Took an hour for the steaks to come out.

Over rated, maybe????. I had a wagyu t-bone steak there today with my 2 daughters. While I do not eat steak on a regular basis, I do eat it often enough to know what I like it to taste. I find that the steaks here taste too much chargrill. I realise that's what the place is all about, but are we just eating too much burnt carbon? The steak is perfectly cooked (bravo), but are the ratings over board? Charcoal tastes charcoal...no science to it. Would I pay $89 for another t-bone? Defintely not ! ! !

Great steak! Somewhat bland sides.. There is no doubting that the steak here is great. My wife had the scotch fillet, and I had the porterhouse. The scotch fillet was excellent, with lots of flavour due to the marbling and thinness. Mine, on the other hand, was too rare, particularly because it was a thick cut, and I asked for it to be cooked a little more. That's one heads up for this restaurant - in my opinion, they tend to cook the steak less than what you might expect elsewhere.

The sides were somewhat less spectacular. A bowl of pre-cut fries and a basket of lettuce and shredded cabbage accompanied the steaks separately. The shredded cabbage was the only novelty there. Mustard was available upon request, but no other toppings.

A note must be made about the wine list. Although I don't regularly drink wine, a diverse and interesting selection was available. I accompanied my steak with a bold Shiraz. The size of the glass itself though was massive!

Although I love a good steak, I think sides are somewhat important as well to give balance to the meal. If that's what your'e looking for, then I wouldn't head here. If it's just the meat your after though, and perhaps a good wine, then this gets a solid recommendation.

I finished the meal with a coffee, but it was nothing to write home about. Save yourself the trouble.

Food was fantastic ! Nice mild charcoal bitter flavour on the top of the steak to add on a twist, good selection of cheeses and wine list , dessert is nicely presented as well . The only let down for me is the service , for the price I pay I would expect a bit more friendly and welcoming feeling rather than be left alone in the corner and unattended ...
