Review Chinese Jin Dumpling House - Kew

adam woodhouse
I’ve been coming here for years and may be biased but this is one of the best places I’ve been for a meal the dumplings have extra taste and menu is extensive and unique I’ve had their lunch menu noodle soup dumplings and was blown when mixing it with the special chilli paste the dinner menu black pepper sizzling chicken always gave my palate a kick to satisfaction. Service always lovely even has a ringer at each table in case you need anything else

Underwhelming dishes. Whilst the restaurant has very nice table settings, the dishes were disappointing. The fried rice I would give a 3/5 but the other dishes tasted very similar and wasn’t flavorful. The chicken had a very odd texture and the sauce was overpowered by tomatoes 1/5. The pork was decent but the portion was mostly vegetables 3/5. The eggplant was not spicy at all and was a little oily 1/5. With a medium sized menu I would expect that the dishes on there were ones they were good at. The staff are friendly and very helpful. However this was a very disappointing visit in terms of the food and we will probably not return.

Great vego dumplings! Usually so bland... Two types we tried which were vegan. Really yummy - mushroom +++, tofu +++. Chinese broccoli was very fresh and crunchy, the eggplant was not the usual Chinese style, had a thick sauce which wasn't my favourite but still ok. Friendly attentive lady to serve us despite a few tables and only one waitress. Recommend! Licensed plus byo wine.

I hope this place reopens, lovely atmosphere and hard to find dumplings that are the best I’ve had
Andrew
If you want to over pay for dumplings that are average at best then this is the place to go. It's empty a lot of the time

Service was absolutely lovely and very accomodating, food was some of the best dumplings I’ve ever had. The vibes were a bit weird because the restaurant was empty but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the experience. Would definitely come again.

The staff are happy to leave you to your conversations. The range of dishes includes old favourites and more traditional combinations. The curry dumplings are unlike anything I’ve had anywhere else, I really like them. The prices are fair for the generous serves. A quality restaurant for family dinners and casual catch ups.

The staff are super friendly and customer service is great. As an English only speaker there is some difficulty in communicating but this is more than made up by there fantastic attitude. This place is our go to place for dumplings in Kew and have been there many times in the past. This time we did take away. They don't have their own web site (that I could find) however the menu log version of their menu worked fine and the order worked fine. Parking out the back. Heaps of space.

Come here on a fortnightly basis - service and food always amazing!! Love this place!! Dumplings4eva

Most Westernised Asian food this Asian has ever eaten...

Ordered takeaway of some dumplings, fried rice and “honey chicken”.

First off, when we received the order: we had no idea what the box of white cubes floating in a tub of clear yellowish brown sauce was! IT WAS THE HONEY CHICKEN. No batter on the chicken, *definitely* not crispy in anyway what so ever and literally swimming in sugar water but somehow still dry inside?!

Dumplings were overcooked, i’ll give them the benefit of doubt though and blame that on delivery time. The pork and cabbage fillings were just meat, couldn’t see any cabbage; same for the pork and eggplant.

Taste of the dumplings were alright, albeit very peppery. Fried rice was quite tasty and the serving was generous with lots of seafood.

Overall, it’s clearly catering to the demographic of Kew. Was very disappointed though as the rating inspired the expectation of a certain level of standard.

Quite a good range of dumpling choices - both traditional and not-so-traditional e.g. I'm curious about trying their pork, prawn, egg dumpling next time.
Ample seating, and no minimum on EFTPOS.
Nice friendly local place. Xiao long bao looked home made and was ok. Szechuan beef was good! Chinese broccoli in garlic was crunchy and fresh.

Really nice!!! best dumpling i have even eaten! Eat a lot time here! Have already recommended lots my friends to go! Services are really nice there and good atmosphere! A really good Chinese restaurant. If you are looking for dumpling house, that’s best choice!!

We are regulars. The dumplings are very good, and in no way defrosted supermarked offerings - you can see that clearly just by looking at them. We love the range of vegetable dishes and the fact that there is a good variety of mixed meat/ vege dishes - so you dont have to get all one or the other. Service always prompt and plenty of tables. People who order sweet and sour and are then disappointed are not yet ready for Chinese food. They should stick to KFC until their palate grows up.
I encountered this venue while looking for a quick bite before heading to an event. It resides in a fairly nondescript shopfront, and the interior is in need of a re-paint and spruce up. The decor comprises off white walls with faux brickwork, and bright red doors and door frames. Some appropriate Chinese motifs such as scrolls with Chinese characters adorn the walls. There are two main dining spaces, and the table settings are quite decorative with red table cloths. The menu features standard fare such as dumplings (of course), soups and rice dishes, and they are relatively inexpensive meals. I opted for some fried vegetarian dumplings which were quite good and filling. The service was cheerful, courteous and attentive. Not bad for a quick and simple meal without frills.

Have had a great experience just about every time we have visited. Food is always out fast and delicious. Have a massive range of dumplings and a fantastic range of vegan options to choose from.

The customer service was great, but that's about it. My friend is vegetarian and we ate all vegetarian meals, the dumplings tasted strange and the vegetarian meals were over priced.

I'm so sorry that I had to do this review but all this restaurant deserves is 1.5. We were recommended it by a few people and I tried it and it wasn't even lukewarm, it was just genuinely bad. There were a few dumplings that were hard on one side and soggy on the other. I don't like doing bad reviews but this was just ewww.
Geoff
My rating of 1.5 pretty much says it all. I visited as the guest of two young Chinese friends who had heard it was a really good family run restaurant. It has high Zomato scores also, so I figured it should be OK.
We quickly gathered it had changed hands. We first caught onto this when looking at the picture menu, many dishes crossed out. The service was weird. It was a two room restaurant, so they had a call button on the walls, beside each table. This did not improve slow, somewhat awkward service. Food not much better. Full of MSG, dumpling shells dry and heavy, prawns and calamari looked good but was not palatable, did not seem fresh. I think that’s enough to explain my 1.5. These new owners seem totally unaware of the most basic service skills. We entered the restaurant very early and saw 3, maybe 4 people behind the counter. They scuttled away, and we only saw the one waiter for the entire visit. One could reasonably have expected hospitality “walk thrus” from the owner who could have helped the pleasant but very inexperienced and nervous waiter. And made us feel wanted.
Wine and BYO prices quiet low, food quiet high. I suspect they have used Jade just across the road, and arguably one of Melbourne’s best service and food Chinese restaurants, as a guide. But Jade they are not.
Geoff Birtles.

Disappointing since change of ownership - from the grubby teapot to the paper table covers which kept catching on my sleeve to the greasy plastic coated menus with crossed out photos of dishes not available to the peeling wallpaper & weird call buttons on the wall this place has changed. The cost of 12 teeny tiny dumplings for entree followed by soggy veg beef black bean served on alfoil covered sizzle plate & old green beans in super chilli pork mince & Chinese tea = $70 for 2 - no alcohol no dessert. There are plenty of other Chinese restaurants to choose from - this isn't what it used to be.

Had a great lunch here with my friends. We ordered pan fried vegetarian dumplings and we enjoyed. Wasn't much busy but happy with food and service.
I love all the steam buns and dumplings in Chinese Jin Dumpling House! Especially Prawn steamed dumpling and pork prawn dumplings❣ The honey prawns is awesome. Nice service here.

Stick with their Dumplings ........

There are 42 types of Dumpling there, so it should satisfy all cravings.
They are well made and cooked, on a thicker skin but good.

While the rest of the main meals at lunch time were ordinary, oily and not desirable.
Aki T
They have great dumplings. People who called them 'frozen supermarket dumplings' are a joke. Have you had supermarket dumplings? They're nowhere near the dumplings from this restaurant. Real meat and ingredients here! Very crispy (I only get pan fried since I love them) and lots of variety to try.

Personally I don't think they are expensive. Decent pricing since if I can pay $25 for a salad at an Italian restaurant and $29 at a Thai restaurant for a single portion of curry with two pieces of beef, what makes $11 for a serving of dumplings expensive? How about $6 for 3 Siu Mai at Yum Cha? Don't eat here if you can't afford it.

I'm sure each table has both vinegar and soy sauce bottles, at least all the different tables I've sat at over the years have had both and you can ask for chilli (which I LOVE!). Not sure if some of previous posters had even bothered looking at what was on their table. This place definitely have the best dumplings in Melbourne as I have tried many places (CBD, Box Hill, Doncaster) and nothing else comes close. I'm a regular customer who visits 2-3 times a week & have been frequenting this restaurant for over two years and will continue to go. P.S. the fried beans with mince is also amazing
#alwayshungry
The dumplings were average, thick skin with little flavour. No sauce offered with the dumplings. Very expensive for the quality and service provided.

Has to be one of the worst places to have dumplings , the atmosphere is very drab and the service takes forever . The food is inedible the dumplings are frozen and by no means fresh , the dumplings once they arrived were not served with any dipping sauces furthermor they were the size of dried prunes and the chicken and pork were stale .

These guys are dreaming if they think people are going to pay $12 for frozen supermarket dumplings.

if you want good dumplings then definetly STAY AWAY from this wanna be dumpling house .
Ordered the pork and cabbage, chicken and coriander dumplings. Looked like they were defrosted from a supermarket and were inedible. No dipping sauce other than soy. She didn't even ask us if we wanted anything. She dumped the food on our table and scooted. Must've been ashamed of the food she had just served us. Cant compare it to other places that actually make their dumplings fresh and by hand. Even if you were starving I wouldn't recommend eating here. There's a Maccas 200m up the road that we had to resort to for a quick bite. Never ever coming here again.

The only dumpling places around here for takeaway are this one and Dumpling King in Hawthorn.

Thought we'd give this one a go seeing as it's pretty easy to get to. We ordered pan fried vegetarian dumplings (the one with vermicelli and tofu), pan fried pork dumplings, steamed chicken and leek and home made fried noodles with chicken.

They only provided soy sauce, but luckily I have dark vinegar at home handy for times like these.

Dumplings are actually not too bad with the vegetarian one actually being nicer than I thought. The others are pretty average as well with the noodles being fairly ordinary.

The best and freshest dumplings I'm aware of in Melbourne. A simple restaurant with great, tasty, varied dumplings. My favourites are the coriander chicken and pork with leek.
Alex Tee
Nothing fantastic and just too quiet. Waitresses just stand there behind a counter and stare at you awkwardly. Dumplings are quite average and overpriced.
CSingh
Agree with some of the reviews it's expensive for dumplings. I'm not a tight ar*e (well I don't think so anyway lol) it's more expensive compared to other dumplings restaurants in Melbourne. Maybe it's the rent or target market...not sure.
Apoppamilkov
Idiot who thinks this is expensive!!!!!!!. The person who thinks the dumplings are over-priced must be the biggest moron on this earth....or they are the biggest tight ar3e ever!!!

i go here regularly....its cheap, clean and you get more than what you pay for.

maybe this person is better suited to dining at ikea food hall where they can treat their poor unfortunate family to a 3 course meal for $8.
Kat
Wonton noodle soup only good thing. I've been here a few times now and tried a couple of dumplings and a noodle dish - all were ordinary and nothing to rave about. I then gave the wonton noodle soup a try after recommendations and it really is delicious and by far the best thing on the menu!
Sikrmcal
Overly expensive, average food, and took ages to get to the table.. The dumplings were well over priced considering you can get the same quality elsewhere for a cheaper price, it took ages to come after we had ordered and the noodles we ordered were also incredibly expensive!

My new favourite Chinese Take Away. Inexpensive, great food and oodles of dumplings ..... I have told friends & I will be back !

Waiting. My partner got her food already finished and I'm still waiting for mine to come out and also other people have sat down and they have received food. horrible service tried to talk to them and they walk off, never again!!!!!
Ktads
Average!!! The dumplings were nothing special, the rice was greasy and everything was really expensive! Total shame.

Customer service is not friendly.. They ran out of one of the most popular dishes in a Chinese restaurant..

Would go back. I stopped by sometime around last month and I have to say I loved this place.

The staff were friendly and served me prominently and since I went quite early I was even able to have a little chat with one of their waitresses.

I like how their menu offers me a wide range of choices and there were so many types of dumplings! The main dishes were also nice but I am a bigger fan of their dumpings, I highly recommend getting the pan fried curry beef ones.

Absolutely disaster. The waitress who wears a pair of glasses was so arrogant and rude. We are customers and we are allowed to ask questions about food. She was giving us attitude frm no where. Mamamiya. Food was terrible n not fresh at all. Plz Do not go ! U ll regret !

Great!!. Amazing food, loved the dumplings, definitely going back.

Poor service, lacked atmosphere, dumplings had no flavour and the food took far to long to come out. They need to brush up on customer service and be a little warmer and inviting.

Very dissapointing. I tried this restaurant based on the positive reviews that it receives on this website. I am not sure if I bought the take away during the chef’s bad cook day but we were very disappointed with the quality of the food served in there. The dumplings (pan fried and steamed) were mediocre, and the meat in the cashew chicken does not smell fresh. The beef with sweet sour sauce tasted quite weird (there was no seasoning at all, just very, very sweet), and I think the prices were too expensive for the quality of food that was on offer. We ended up throwing up everything besides the dumplings, so fair to say that we will not be coming back here anytime soon....

The king of dumplings!. We've been a couple of times and were super impressed by the dumplings on both occasions. Sorry, Dumpling King, but you've been out-dumplinged!

While the other items on the menu are pretty good, they're nowhere near as wonderful as the dumplings. And the special fried rice is pretty bland.

The women serving are always friendly, courteous and efficient.

We're looking forward to going back!
After Dark
Very Good. Worth a Try. We stuck with the dumplings, both steamed & fried and were impressed by the high quality of both. Good service & fair prices only added to our enjoyment. We'd go back

Great service, very very well made fresh dumplings. Loved the vegetarian options, full of flavour and quality ingredients. Pan fried and steamed dumplings were some of the best I've ever had. The tomato and egg soup is one of my all time favorite dishes too. Totally recommend it.

Amazing dumplings. I found the dumplings to be one of the best I've had.
Usually im not a big fan of pan fried, but these were delish!
broad range of dumplings to choose and very prompt and quick service.
will be going back.

Awesome. I love this place. the food is always delicious and brought out quickly. the waitress is always charming and hospitable.okay so the decor isnt amazing, an the insense is always a little strong, and some people complain about the price but i will always return. if youre looking to impress someone (first date, business lunch) this isnt the place, but for a flawless quick meal look no further

I found the dumplings to be inconsistent in their inconsistent in quality and taste, but the lemon chicken is the best I've ever had. The flesh is scored and scalded before shallow frying and when served its texture is firm and lightly crispy on the outside, all doused in a subtly sweet lemon sauce that does not overpower the dish. Exceptional taste and texture.

Wow INCREDIBLE DUMPLINGS. I'll start by saying that this beautiful, tranquil dumpling house has by far the best dumprings going around (that ive had!(and i try quite a few!)) I was gob smacked, they were so good i could not talk, nor did i want to. I went in for lunch with a long time friend of mine to reminisce over great memories, but it was truly hard to take my mind off how delicious my dumplings were. We ordered a plate of 12 steamed pork and cabbage dumplings and also a plate of 12 fried pork and coriander. Both were phenomenally well balanced, with enough meat and juiciness to motivate you for more, and NO THE OUTSIDE LAYER WASNT TOO THICK LIKE SOME OTHER PLACES IVE BEEN TOO *cough cough*..Dumpling house near southern cross station *cough cough*. Either i was that hungry or the dumplings were a bit on the light side , it didnt matter, we went back for a 3rd dish, a plate of 16 pork and cabbage again, couldnt go past them. Yes these dumplings are a bit greasy, but thats what you want, they slip down you're throat like a nice scoop of ice cream yet carry that warmth that reminds one of a family sitting by their communal fire in rural Shanghai whilst the cold wind blows outside. I think the people at Chinese Jin Dumpling House should be extremely proud of what they are producing, one could say they are jiniuses, i would agree with those people, all up the lunch cost 35 dollars (including the $1 pots of chinese tea i truly suggest, they complement the meal phenomenally) I WILL CERTAINLY BE COMING BACK FOR MORE! ALAS GOOD LUCK TO YOU JIN HOUSE! LIVE LONG AND PROSPER! YAH! YAH!

Went here last night for dinner.
we got the pork with spicy sweet sour sauce dumplings (steamed) and the steamed prawn dumplings.
both were VERY good!
reasonable pricing with fast service, will definitely return here next time I want some great dumplings!

Not great. My expectations were a bit let down after my meal at Chinese Jin Dumping House. Food was overpriced, and service was rather slow. I ordered the vegetarian tofu which I found had too much sauce and was quite rich with little vegetables. My boyfriend ordered the dumplings which were nice however overpriced compared to other dumpling restaurants I have attended. Was not pleased after my visit here, as it was quite dissapointing.
Julia Eats Melbourne
Better than CBD dumplings.. I must say I was impressed with the selection of dumplings (e.g., chicken and coriander, prawn and tofu etc). The fried ones weren't greasy like they can be at some dumpling venues but the steamed ones were my favourite. Of the ones I tried the most flavoursome were the pork, prawn, egg and leek dumplings. The vegetarian ones with smoked tofu had a unique flavour (not sure I'd try them again) but I thought I should be adventurous and try something different. As you'd expect from a cheap chinese restaurant the ambience is average but the dumplings are well priced and are much better quality than you will find in many CBD dumpling restaurants.

We went to Jin last night based on a review in the age. The night started well, orders taken and dumplings arriving in due course, all very nice. However...after another table complained about a flat beer an argument started between the waitresses with them yelling at each other in Chinese in front of the entire restaurant...this continued for a few uncomfortable minutes followed by slamming dishes and sulking. Good food let down by a bad service incident
Toasty
Food was acceptable but not great - and overpriced.

4 of us decided to give Jin Dumpling House a go on a quiet sat night. GREAT service and staff. Delicious dumplings, and nothing was too salty like other older reviews. Great variety and the prices are very reasonable. 4 of us stuffed ourselves for $65 and we BYOd 2 bottles of wine. Great night out.
Brigitte
We were looking forward to some good dumplings! Very disappointed everything was ridden with salt. Something must have happened in thus kitchen as it was ridiculously salty. We ate our meal however we will not return
Hungry Ronin
Very average. I am not a dumpling expert, but compared to some of the dumpings i've had in Melbourne and throughout Asia it would just be OK. I would say that the skin of the dumplings have a good bite to them, and the various contents, whilst modest, was flavorsome. We had the lamb and coriander along with the prawns and chicken mix, one steamed one pan fried. Both are good, but I felt that it may be a tad salty and oily, with a big residue of oil in my chilli and soy sauce bowl. Delicous, but definetly couldn't have this everyday unless I want a stroke in the next year!

Kew is quickly becoming a bit of a Foodie hub, with St Katherine's and Mister Bianco opening in the last few months old regulars like Chinese Jin Dumpling House are in just the right spot to attract Dumpling Lovers as they potter past! Firstly - there is a catalogue of dumplings!!
Libby Margo
It’s a nice enough dumpling restaurant, with a great selection of dumplings and I can certainly see myself coming here to work my way down the menu if I lived in the area. Unfortunately, Kew is a bit of a hike if you’re relying on public transport (hopefully this will change very soon
