Review Ayam Goreng 99 - Kingsford

Fee-fi-fo-fum
The best barbecue chicken around! We love the Paha Bakar (charcoal grilled marinated chicken thigh) which is $7.50 a piece. Ayam Goreng 99 is open for take away from 12-8pm Wednesday to Sunday. Staff are friendly and the food is usually ready within 10 minutes.

Fun fact: Kensington is a suburb of choice for Indonesian students and expats living in Sydney. You can find many Indo restaurants here and this place is one of the most popular. It's most famous dish is a marinated Chicken (Ayam). I'm not local but made the trip to check it out, and I can confirm it was totally worth it! Tasted amazing and quite unique.

Super delicious Indonesian grilled chicken (ayam bakar) with the chilli sauce (sambel). We also bought the fried beef (empal), fried liver and gizzard (ati & ampla). The soto betawi is also fantastic. Take away only but we happily ate in our car.

Great place, very good takeaway portions and the dishes are quite tasty. Would recommend their half chicken fried, the sticky sauce it comes with is delicious!

Looks like family run restaurant. The atmosphere is like canteen in real Indonesia, there are plain tables and chair, and self service water and dishes. I ordered curry soup and coconut milk rice, that was awesome. The foods were served very quickly. The tripes in the soup were well cooked, very juicy and tender. But the price is quite reasonable.

This is the very 1st time I ate soto ayam from this restaurant. Its weird. I ordered it as a take away order and as soon as i got home, found out the soto ayam was served without any noodle and egg inside. The soto ayam is just a soup with some chicken pieces. I'm surprised with that.... šŸ‘Ž

Used to be better. Only takeaways, no more dine in with friendly waiters and waitresses. Spent $65ish on takeaway to realise that only getting a tablespoon of chilli for few meatless grilled chickens; noodleless and eggless soto.

A must try if you're craving casual unpretentious and reasonably priced Indonesian food! Dinner service is always busy, people even come before it opens and the queue becomes long in no time and there's always a waiting list. I love the food they cook here, tasted just like back home. I love its fried vermicelli noodles (bihun) & Soto. They only accept cash, so come prepared.

Ayam Goreng 99, Iā€™m told, is perhaps the top Indonesian restaurant in all of Sydney. It also happens to be within a 15 minute drive of where I live, and so I felt obliged to try it. On the advice of Zomato denizens I tried the Paha Goreng Kalasan (deep fried chicken maryland, $7) and the Kweatiau Goreng (stir-fried thick egg noodles, $13).

Finally tried this legendary Ayam Goreng which already well known among Indonesians in Sydney. This what we had:
- ayam bakar (grilled chicken), chicken taste nice, it well marinated. Seems like they braised the chicken with spices first before grill it with kecap manis. The Sambal itself not really spicy to my liking
- kwetiau goreng, it's hubby's order. He said it taste nice just like the way I cook at home lol
- soto ayam, taste more like soto Ambengan for me. But it's good and generous topping

Best Indo restaurant in Sydney, get the combination of nasi uduk (coconut rice), ayam bakar (marinated chicken), and kangkung balacan or sayur asam. Eat everything with their signature sambal and it will satify your craving for Indo food. I hope the ayam goreng to be more savory though, but other than that it's a pleasant experience & food.

Actual rating 3.5/5. The chicken thigh is a must order! It was very yummy. The satay chicken, however, had a bit too much ā€œgrilledā€- ness for my liking. The curry was also very enjoyable and not spicy at all.

Without fail, grilled chicken thigh (ayam bakar) and kangkung, each and everytime. Never disappoints.

This place used to be our favour Indonesian restaurant in town but disappointed that the staff and service let down, food quality is slowly degraded. Following experiences happened every time from our last 3 visits, so itā€™s not one off case.

Taste and portion are inconsistent, seems depending how busy they are.

They ignored their queue practices (registering name and a number of people) and always let Indonesian speaking customers go first (for same table of 4) 2 or 3 groups came after us are allowed to get in first, we couldnā€™t stand with this in our last visits so we questioned them but they told liar and said they had already called our name, the fact was we waited right next to the door and had never been called, we looked at each other every time she called customer name.

Every visit they mess up our order, either lost or wrong food. We are fine with the wrong order as we have chance to try something new, but missing order kept us waiting for nothing.

Few cockroaches found on wall and floor, told the waitress but she wasnā€™t interested/surprised, simply said they are from the toilet not the kitchen. (Not a smart response IMO)

The one i have ordered is ā€œayam goreng mentegaā€ which is a plate of fried chicken, i didnt expect it turns out to be a plate of bone without much chicken on. Paying for 16 dollar for bones is crazy. The chicken tastes dry and tbh it is the worst i have ever tried. Hope they can focus on the food quality instead of driving down the cost crazily
Moo Foodie
The Nasi Goreng was amazing, along with their signature chilli sauce. The desserts werenā€™t that amazing in comparison to Vietnamese desserts. Overall, the staff were on point with getting the food to us on time despite the busy environment. Waiting lists were in place and worked well to get most customers in line with minimal waiting time. Would definitely visit again.

Had been a regular until the last I came for lunch, I got a piece that didn't taste fresh and was hard to eat. Similar to an overnight chicken. I send it back. They said they will not serve me another as they are confident all the chickens are fresh and from the same batch. I guess trying to hold a reputation and their pride. Sometimes it could be a few bad ones they bought, they wouldn't know. However my rating is because they don't even try for their customer and so I lost interest in going back now.

I know this place is an institution, but I have never been before tonight. My husband tells me he used to go here during uni days (which was a long long time ago). Itā€™s a good thing we came just before 6pm as there was already a long queue and we just made the first seating.

We came with friends who are Indonesian and regulars, so we let them do the ordering. As usual, they always over order so our table was heaving with food. Their grilled chicken was tasty and I liked their rice vermicelli noodles with chicken. My son liked the fried rice that was ordered. There was soups and grilled tofu wrapped in leaves and mushrooms wrapped in leaves. The ran out of coconut rice so we ordered their white rice with rendang beef which was tough. Maybe as the prices were big but the sauce itself was very tasty. The Indonesian chilli is very spicy, so be careful when trying it the first time.

We tried to eat as quickly as possible as we got the table right next to the door so we could see the people looking in wanting a table.

Fastest service ever. Never fails to deliver the best quality dishes. Paha goreng kalasan with plain white rice, an absolutely amazing combination. Never disappoints.

Yesterday, #literallyondiet hunts dinner at ayam goreng 99 Kingsford and I can only tell you one thing, THE BEST INDO RESTAURANT IN SYDNEY! Thatā€™s why everyday they always have long queues and people are willing to wait 30 mins to an hour for a mealšŸ˜ we tried their kangkung, it is overcook but so tasty!!!! But their ayam bakar is the best(especially if you love spicy, dip it with their homemade sambal)
Since I love their sambal so much I bought 1 home for cooking for $5
Kristy
Best Indonesian food in Sydney, yang paling menyerupai makanan di Indo. Sambel nya juga enak bangeeeet! Udah pernah nyobain semua menu nya, enak semua.
Abdul Soulisa

So good I tucked in before I remembered to take pictures.

We had:
Ayam bakar thigh
Deep fried Javanese style thigh
Cah kang kung (stir fry water spinach)
Nasi goreng
Koeyteuw goreng

All top notch!!!

I wonder how they get the chicken so tender?
Aimee.
What can I say... absolutely unreal and authentic, delicious Indonesian food. Portions are decent- I recommend the half chicken with sweet sauce. However, the chargrilled chicken was $7 for one piece (not big) which was overpriced.
Jane Tan
To be honest the food here is the everyday dishes in Indonesia however the dishes here have been perfected the food here is basic as I usually eat the ayam Bakar, rice, chilli and tempe . The food here is good as there is no competition to beat Ayam Goreng 99. however this place will always have a special place in my heart. The other good thing about Ayam Goreng 99 is the sambel as you take the amount you want however if you take away the food it is not as good as you eat it there

Interesting place! When you order, they give you a piece of paper and write down your own order, which I actually like because then there is no confusion about what you're ordering. We got 2x pieces of charcoal grilled marinated chicken (thigh) which was the star dish $13. Bakmie Goreng (stir-fried egg noodle) $12 ā€“ noodles had a chewy and firm texture! Also had a classic Nasi Goreng $13. The place is BYO too! Go-reng your friends and set up a dinner! Definitely the kind of place you would bring your mates for a casual feed. Probably wouldn't take a date here unless you're both really chill!

I love the food here, service is prompt and i could always rely on good indonesian food. Charcoal grilled chicken is so tender along with chicken satay skewers. I even love their nasi goreng and stir fried vegetables. Its great that they also offer fried tofu and tempeh.

Hands down the best ayam bakar in sydney or in australia. We have it numerous times dine in and take away, its really that gooddddd!!!!
Always have it with sayur asem, perfect combo!! Even im salivating, writing this review šŸ˜‹

I donā€™t get what the hype is all about. I had the curry and it was oily and looked like it was mixed with a lot of other oils and fats. It was small for the price. I didnā€™t enjoy eating here at all.
Pam
Slightly overpriced. Like $6.5 p/piece of chicken šŸ˜µ

But the flavour is there. Every single dish is authentic and tasty. Place was packed on a Sunday night with a line outside. The ambience inside, is old and tacky.

If youā€™re looking for real indo food, itā€™s recommended.
Ra
Absolutely love this place. Cheap, quality home style Indonesian food. When I first came I would have the satay chicken regularly. However the standouts are clearly their grilled/fried chicken. Personal favourite is the paha bakar (grilled thigh) which is incredibly succulent and tasty. Accompany this with a coconut rice and throw in a can of A&W root beer and you have the perfect meal for under $15. Their noodles are also top notch (good to split with someone coz the serving size is quite large). Kweatiau goreng is my go to. Have also tried their Nasi goreng, cah kangkun and ayam goreng metenga which arenā€™t bad but the others described above are definitely the stand outs.
Prida
One of the best Indonesian restaurants in Sydney! The grilled chicken (thigh) is a must try! You might need to queue to get in but worth the wait.
Dominic Svensson
A mediocre taste of Indonesia.Ā At least the $6.50 serves of chicken are big, so you could build a cheap meal easily, but I wanted a big brunch (and the restaurant was already busy 15 minutes after opening) so I ordered fried chicken and grilled chicken. Both had somewhat tough meat, the fried chicken had thin tasteless batter and the sauce on the grilled chicken was surprisingly bland. Their sambal has quite a kick but not much flavour. Even the tempe was tough and tasteless and the watermelon juice was very watery. I was hoping that this would take me back to my travels in Indonesia and Timor but it would surely be considered a low-end warung over there.

Saturday evening well spent! Arrived at this place around 8pm and saw around 8ppl queueing outside the place. You gotta walk in and put your name down so they can call you in when they find a table for you. The wait was around 15mins for me and my buddy.

We ordered its well known Ayam Goreng-Fried Chicken (as the place suggests) and Ayam Bakar (charcoal grilled chicken). They also serve my favorite dish, fried tripe! We also got some rice to go along with it. For drinks, we ordered Es Teler.
The order didn't take long to arrive. Both chicken were well marinated however it was a little too dry. I have been eating these type of meals in Indonesia, its origin, and the chicken shouldn't be that dry. It tasted pretty authentic though in terms of spices.
Tripe was tender and not so oily.
We had some tempeh and tahu to go with it too. Oh! We ordered sayur asam (sour soup) to moisten our digestion. It was sleek.

The SAMBAL is important. It is GOOD. Spicy level 4/5.

Es teler was average. A bit too sweet but for 5bucks, what do you wanna complain about. LOL.

The menu looks a bit old, can do a bit of design updates and photos but man, i think they dont really need to since people are still queueing to eat there!

Overall, yes worth a try. Definitely would come back and try other things.
Excellent casual Indonesian restaurant in Kingsford. Friendly, lightning-fast service & prices are very reasonable. Always busy - expect to queue for a table unless you arrive bang-on opening time. The ayam bakar marinade is so delicious, you'll be tempted to order more pieces. Choose nasi uduk (coconut rice) over regular steamed rice & go easy on the sambal unless you can handle the heat! The pepes teri (spiced anchovies in banana leaf) is another favourite. I wasn't a fan of the beef rendang; the meat was tough, sauce too sweet and it was served cold. Overall a great eating experience. I will be back to try other dishes for sure.
Bryan Lee
Excellent food, especially love the sambal here!
Their chicken has always been consistent and is one of the best I've tasted around the area - queue gets really long at peak hours, so advisable to arrive before they open.
Lily
Super love the ayam bakar and kangkung! The special fried rice and meehoon are pretty delicious as well. This place gets very crowded, especially at peak hours, be prepared to wait for a table. Will definitely come back for that yummy chicken!
Violetta
The chicken is definitely their best dish on the menu. I tried their rendang and bakso (meatball) however was disappointed, they didnā€™t taste as how it should.
Gideon Setyawan
The always busy restaurant in Kingsford. Had lunch here on Sunday afternoon, queue for about 20 minutes. Ordered the charcoal grilled chicken with Kangkung. Chicken šŸ“ is always the same tasty. Together with the chilli and sweet soy sauce, what a bomb. Kangkung was okay nothing really outstanding. Service was good, recommended for a cheap yet tasty lunch or dinner.
Lee
Satay like no other. I canā€™t replicate this at all at home which is frustrating because Iā€™m not close enough to have it cooked for me on the regular. Always a wait here which is understandable as itā€™s cheap and incredibly tasty food. Havenā€™t had a bad dish yet.
Yohana Chang
Chicken thigh was much smaller than usual. It used to be OK but now the inconsistency is becoming more frequent. They should compensate with two small chicken thighs if the normal size cannot be provided fairly, as it has bothered us and made other restaurants more preferable.

After being let off from work early for the day, my Indonesian coworkers and I were trying to decide what to do/eat. One of them piped up and suggested Ayam Goreng 99. Always one to try a nativeā€™s suggestion, I jumped on the chance despite the trek. Arriving there just half an hour after they opened, there was already a line waiting to get a table. After a half hour wait, we finally sat down at this otherwise unassuming hole-in-the-wall restaurant.

A friend of mine took me to this little restaurant in Kingsford. The establishment offers authentic Indonesian cuisine for a great value. Food is great, although I strongly recommend to order "shared" dishes instead of single portions (shared portions are larger in size and have more flavor). Expect to wait 10-20 minutes outside the restaurant for a seat. The staff in the restaurant only serves you the food and tap water, you have to fill in the order yourself.
Dongmanqing
I ordered fried chicken, pork belly, fried beef, coconut rice and a roll today.
First I donā€™t like the smell of the restaurant, and the attitude of the waitress is bad.
As for the food, for the fried chicken, Iā€™d better chose the KFC or Chicken wings from pizza hut
. The fried beef is tasty. But the roll is quite weird taste and makes me feel very bad.
I canā€™t see why this restaurant has a so high score.
Kk007
Chicken is the must have dish- char grilled flavour very nice.

My other favourite is stir fried egg noodles, it's very tasty - just a bit too sweet tho
Aeonfrost
Wow, amazing quality authentic Indonesian food in a simple home environment. The place has an array of style of dishes, which is far superior than the other south Asian style restaurants namely Mamak and Pappa Rich. A good hidden gem.

One of Indonesian restaurant in Kingsford area that serving decent Indonesian food.
We ordered :
sate Ayam ( chicken satay ) which was good, however not outstanding. Meats are so tiny, and accompanied with peanut sauce and fried onion with kecap manis ( sweet soy ) drizzled on top.
Flavour wise, it was good and tasty.
Came with what they called, rice cake. ( like rice steamed inside banana leaves.)
Cah kangkung was nice too, my only complain was a little to oily for the dish.
Ayam Bakar. ( Grilled Chicken )
I think this was the highlight from what we ordered.
Chicken was marinate before hand, and during the cooking prices, what we think is basted with sweet sky mixture. You can see the chicken was nicely basted and caramelized on the skin.
Flavour was deep penetrated to the meat, leaving good sweetness from marination combained with charred from the fire during grilling process.
Definitely worth to visit if you are on the area.

The best 'Ayam goreng' (fried chicken) and 'Ayam bakar' (grilled chicken) in Sydney! This authentic Indonesian Restaurant is not only popular for their amazing chicken dishes but also for their other menus. Highly recommend!

The food and staff were amazing and this is the most authentic Indonesian restaurant in Sydney which I can find. Definitely will recommend this place to everyone. Well done ayam goreng 99!

In this restaurant at least once a week!

Great foods, fair prices, big portions, and friendly staffs!

PS: you'll need to come to the restaurant earlier as some of their foods likely sold out 2-3 hours prior the closing hours.

Authentic, cheap and very tasty. The chicken and the coconut rice were definitely highlights for me. Had a very hard time holding myself from ordering everything on the menu.
Emmau1998
GREAT FOOD! So authentic, very cheap, friendly staff. Had to wait before we got seated but even then it wasn't long at all. Definitely will come back!
Hendra.wong
This is the only place to go if you are looking for authentic Indonesian style ayam goreng (fried chicken) the taste is just so good. reminds me of traditional restaurant in Jakarta serving fried chicken with nasi uduk coconut rice with fried tofu, tempe and sambal belacan. I prefer their ayam bakar (grilled chicken) though because they are marinated and more spicy to my liking
Syara.ann
Taste not bad, the chicken was too less and too much vermicelli. The broth was fine, sambal quite good. Long queue at night. Not too pricey. Service was fine.

Ordered: chicken thighs, stir fry noodles, watermelon juice

Goods:
- authentic homely food and great tasting
- fast service
- easy ordering system
- great variety of food and drinks
- affordable, ordered 6 large chicken thighs, 2 main meals, 4 drinks, 2sides for $89

Bads
- don't split bill
- parking may be hard to find

Great homely food coming from a Asian background.

Don't bother trying other dishes like Ayam Soto or Nasi Goreng because those are not what AYAM GORENG 99 are known for. There are three different versions of the awesome grilled and fried chicken at Ayam Goreng 99. Although they are not as tasty as those which you can find along the streets in Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, you can still taste the tenderness, juiciness and the flavour of an authentic grilled/fried chicken. Don't ask me which is my favourite because they taste really great. Probably a different version for a different weather and a different day of the week.

What's more? The sambal belacan can make you sweat! Dump them into your tummy if you want a full, whole day at the bathroom šŸ˜†šŸ˜†
Miss Deliziosa
Must be my tastebuds but the food I had here was disappointing. Fried chicken was ok, nothing spectacular. The Nasi goreng - rice was clumpy although the flavour was ok. Not what I have expected as I have had Nasi goreng at other places and they have been totally different and better to this. Kangkung dish was also soso. Satay, different to other satay I have had, subtle and creamy however the chicken had a burnt flavour to it which overpowered everything else. Also ordered the iced cendol drink, I do not know why but it tasted as though there was butter in the drink.....weird.

First week in Sydney, confused what to eat (so many choices around) so I decided to play safe & went to this place (reccomended by many friends).

Taste quite similar to home country, amazing sambal (love the spiciness), the only downside that day was that my ayam goreng kalasan a bit burned (usually because of the marinate) & tasted a bit bitter.

One of my many visits to come when I miss my country food & sambal šŸ‡²šŸ‡Ø
R.henson1511
Kangkung , grilled chicken, nasi goreng , ox tail soup are highly recommendedšŸ˜

We think it's too cheap for the quality of food it is offered šŸ‘

The queue is too long on the weekend. If you come with kids, try to go early
Polly Lala
Quick, tasty n cheap!
Our (and also to many others) favourite place for Indonesian style chicken, Ayam 99 never fails to disappoint except when they're closed šŸ˜›
The grilled chicken is always cooked to perfection; succulent, full of flavour with just enough char.
The coconut rice and fried Tempe is a fine complement to the chicken, and their house made sambal šŸ˜¶ is spicy as but it hits all the right spots.
If you can fit it all in their stir fried rice noodles (bihun) are also a delight with the wok fried aroma -if you can't just doggy bag it.
I would say it's the only place in Sydney for Indonesian grilled chicken, don't bother with the others.

šŸ‘…Taste-wise : reminds you of hometown.

Their charcoal grilled chicken is my favourite along with their satay chicken with that amazing peanut sauce that you can't find anywhere else in Sydney. I also love their egg-yolk satay. Place can get really crowded especially during lunch and dinner time.
Jessenia Jauw
One of my favorite Indonesian restaurant in Sydney. You have to try the charcoal grilled chicken! Their chicken satay is also nice, the peanut sauce was smooth and tasty.
Ps: can be really crowded during lunch and dinner time

The wait staff moved us from one place to the other. I cant believe I came all the way from West for second class treatment. Do not recommend. Poor service!!
Aileen
Tender and sweet Ayam Bakar. The chicken was quite big and I also ordered chicken satay. Tender chicken with thick and smooth peanut sauce!

Our Melbourne friends recommended this place, with the rating above 4 it definitely got our attention. We went for a dinner on Friday around 7pm and the place was full! But the wait wasn't long. All food looked great, we wanted to order everything but we decided to try the ayam goreng, ayam kalasan, pepes teri, ampla and kangkung. We enjoyed the food, almost similar to home. Although the sambal was too spicy for us šŸ˜

A very handy tips from other customer: you can order the food over the phone before you arrive šŸ˜‰
Sarahversuscarbs
Still my favorite Indo restaurant for grilled chicken, tempe goreng, and kangkung. Even though it's called ayam goreng (fried chicken) I don't order the fried chicken here. The sambal is awesome too and you can even buy it in jars.
Melissa Gabriele
Best ayam goreng / Indonesian Fried Chicken in Sydney. Trust me, I'm Indonesian. Their Chili is very spicy, close to the traditional Indonesian Chili. They also have Indonesian Nasi uduk which is perfect to eat with the fried chicken. Eating here reminds me of my hometown.
Arijit Das
I have been frequenting Ayam Goreng ever since I have come to Sydney - way back in 2002! Ayam Goreng is Bahasa for Fried Chicken. Best chicken on the planet! Go for the Dada (Breast). I love the Ayam Bakr - grilled chicken. Fast customer service. The sambal here is out of this world. Best combination is Nasi Uduk (Coconut Rice) with Ayam Bakr. You can BYO - there's no corkage! Halal meat served.
Marsha Sinditia Santoso
As an Indonesian, I can say that the taste is spot on and absolutely reminiscent of home (the only thing missing is some deep-fried cabbage). The chicken is tender and well-seasoned. The place is somewhat small and cramped, but hugely popular so expect a line at the door.
Melisa
I am a proud INDO. the foods in this restaurant are very authentic and so INDONESIA. am glad that they open this store in SYDNEY - which im sure other Indonesian also very grateful. ayam bakar, nasi uduk, ampla, ati, sop jakarta, cah kangkung are my FAV. and of course their SAMBALS. BEST. BEST
Kim Tara
Our regular place since uni. The price has not changed much in 10 years. Food was delicious and good portion. Grilled chicken, ox tail soup, kangkung are always on our table.
Ble Bebe
Order their Fried Chicken with kicap manis, Chargrilled Marinated Chicken, Friend Vermicelli Bee Hoon Goreng, Lamb Satay Kambing. Chicken and their Fried Vermicelli Bee Hoon Goreng are ok, Satay are weird with the sauce.
Staff are unfriendly, not the best Indonesian restaurant, definitely won't come back to visit this restaurant
John Yow
Tasty but it's burnt. It's supposed to be barbecued to a certain degree of char, but this is overdone. Other things are quite mediocre, portions were small as well. Rice extremely oily, but at least it has some taste compared to their neighbours. It's probably only patronised by fans who want the actual taste but there's nothing else around that provides that.
Pierre
I've managed to try all three of the chicken varieties available here and chose the chicken breast. The three options were the charcoal grilled marinated chicken, deep fried marinated chicken and the fried marinated chicken Javanese style.Ā

In all three versions, even though the chicken breast didn't look like much from the outside, I found that the chicken was very tasty and cooked to a tender texture and the flavours were quite well infused into the chicken pieces and provided for a hearty meal. The accompanying chilli sambal sauce also added a good kick to the whole meal and I actually finished the steamed rice with only the chilli sauce added to the rice. I tried the Petai Goreng (fried smelly sator beans) once, which seemed a little flat in terms of flavour but were nevertheless a good accompaniment to the main chicken breast meal which had more than enough deep flavours.

The place was quite busy and obviously popular, I just did a take-away order as there weren't any spaces available inside. Service was quite friendly and efficient (with under a ten-minute wait for the meal despite being very busy at the time) but I found the main attraction to be the fried chicken (ayam goreng).

Okie...
So
Fried Rice = not cook properly but i still can eat it

Sate ayam = I like it, but I don't like the sauce, not like 100% Indonesian food hehehe...

Long been a favourite of the family since moving to the east in 1999, this place has maintained its post of one of the best grilled chicken in Sydney. Their pepes are also excellent, along with the Sayur Asem which is also up there with the best (sorry mum). While the water spinach (kangkung belacan) is really good, it's a bit of an eyesore to see it being charged at around $10. I guess coming from an Indonesian family myself, the prices seem steep to us, but are actually quite a steal compared to the average fare. Don't expect the best decor though, it's a bit run down but the flavour more than makes up for this

Ayam Goreng 99 is a bargain gem. The restaurant itself is not much to look at, however it is always busy. The reason for this is the Ayam Goreng(Indonesian fried Chicken) which is combined with ketjap manis(sweet soy sauce) add the restaurants own sambal and you are on to a winner winner chicken dinner. Add the sweet drink es teler and the meal is complete. The restaurant does do other Indonesian meals including rice, noodle, soups and curries. As to be expected these include mie goreng(fried noodles), nasi goreng(fried rice) and beef rendang. But stick to the ayam goreng. Will continue to visit this restaurant and you guessed it: for the ayam goreng. If you are in the area worth a visit.

Excellent food, fast & friendly service. Nasi Goreng (Rice) was perfectly flavoured. Chicken (fried) was delicious, crispy & aromatic. Greens Stir-fry dish & Beef Rendang Curry were outstanding. Prices are very reasonable. It's best to get in early as it can get very busy. Must go!

I grew up eating a lot of authentic Indonesian food and my mum is a professional chef. This restaurant is really good and has good service for a restaurant that is busy. I recommend if you are going to eat there on a Sunday don't come at 6-7 as t is the busiest time
Andy Cheng
Great indo. Chicken is crispy and tender. Nasi goreng is one of the best around. Have to add a lot of that chilli sauce it is highly addictive.

šŸ˜‘ too far from city, sate telur goreng not recomendd šŸ‘ŽšŸ»chilli sauce too hot n no other options
šŸ˜Š cheap, fast service, juicy n tender chicken

This place has got to be the BEST INDONESIAN RESTAURANT in Sydney. Don't expect fancy stuff, just wholesome, lip-smackingly good food. The ambience is sparse and basic, but in reality, once the food comes out, you can barely concentrate on anyting else. Do not miss the grilled chicken.
The Random Foodie
Ayam Goreng 99 was definitely one of those old school restaurants that would have been around for a long time judging from the decor. If the massive crowds waiting outside are anything to go by, the food was certainly worth the wait.
There was 11 of us, so we ordered all three versions of their signature marinated chicken - thigh and breast! My personal favourite was the charcoal grilled version. It may look charred and rustic on the outside but the chicken itself was juicy, flavoursome and tender.

Amazing food Indeeeeddd! Loved the grilled chicken and the chilli of course! šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„ The nasi goreng is pretty good too! And the cah kang kung, maaann! Definitely a homesick cure! Coconut rice always runs out everytime we get there.. :( I think it suits the chicken best! Satay ayam is reasonably tasty.. Yum!

Along the same vein as Vietnamese food the less fancy the decor the better the food. This was my first time trying Indonesian food and I absolutely loved it. The grilled chicken, fried rice and even the veggies were delicious! The star of the show for me was that chilli sauce which I hope you can buy.
Beh Ru Nick
The menu wasn't like an Indonesian menu and the food looked greasy a bit. Also overpriced for a restaurant at that level. Nice try but will Never go again

Words cannot describe the absolute joy I experienced when this charcoal marinated grilled chicken and kangkung hit my taste buds. With a little sambal on the side of course šŸ˜‹šŸ‘Œ Flavour explosion šŸ˜šŸ˜ Yeah I can be a little dramatic šŸ˜† But this was amazing in its simplicity. Can't believe I've only just tried this for the first time now. Can't wait to return and try some more dishes.

Delicious signature Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) and Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) which keeps bringing me back to this simple, yet popular Indonesian restaurant. You'll have to order the rice separately, as well as other sides, but it's all worth it when you taste the chicken.. Oh and don't forget the sambal.. It's spicy and so delicious.. But be warned.. It's hot!

My favourite Indonesian restaurant ever. So cheap however that line is crazy at night.. try the chicken.. or everything... too bad it's quite far away for me..

This is in fact a great place for cheap eat or if you want to try Indonesian food without breaking the bank. In fact the price is probably the only reason the queue is so long. However it will not get our vote for best Indonesian food in town.

We like their Ayam Bakar especially with the accompanying sambal, Empal is also not bad although expect less oily version.

Bottomline : Good food. Good service. Good value.
The Ripest Eggplant
I absolutely love this place if I feel like some authentic Indonesian chicken. Especially their grilled chicken. I highly recommend this place if you want to try authentic homemade Indonesian style chicken with the sweet soy sauce and some sambal on top of it. Starting with the small sides, the sambal at this place is one of the best I've ever had in Australia. It is tasty, spicy, and free! Definitely worth a try if you want to taste authentic Indonesian chilly. With other sides like babat goreng (fried tripe), ati goreng (fried liver), I find that they all depend on personal taste and I personally love them. I do recommend that you try it sometimes as it's only a small side dish.
Before reviewing the chicken, I'll review a soup that I usually have if I don't feel like eating the chicken there. The soup is soto babat (tripe and beef soup). It is one of the tastiest soups I've had in an Indonesian restaurant and I highly recommend you try it out. They also have a variety of drinks which you can enjoy either for desert or during your meal. They include es cendol, avocado smoothy, and soda susu (or it's sometimes called happy soda).
Now the chicken.. I almost always get the ayam bakar as I personally find it the best out of the three (ayam kalasan, fried chicken, and ayam bakar). The ayam kalasan is quite tasty too and has a unique flavour that is not too common in the western areas. I would recommend giving it a try. With the fried chicken, I don't really recommend it as it is nothing special in my opinion and it can be a bit too dry just like when I had it. On the other hand, the ayam bakar is a must have. It is very juicy and the taste is definitely a one of a kind. I've taken a few people to try it out and they're very happy after trying it.
I recommend going to ayam goreng 99 for lunch as it can be very busy at night time. If you do decide to go for dinner, make sure to book a table as the wait can be quite long outside.
The most authentic Indo food I've tasted in sydney that's close to what you get in Indonesia( and I'm not talking bout about generic food from Bali). I had the ayam satay, nasi goreng, tried their 3 types of chicken- fried, spiced and Javanese style. I also had their little banana leaf mushrooms which were delicious. I'm quite happy to dine in at a humble restaurant that provides unreal food experience. Chilli pots are not for the faint hearted hahaha great tasting and perfect for mešŸ˜‹

I ended the glorious meal with their Avocado juice/drink.

Can food be sexy? Hahah
Anna
Best ayam goreng in Sydney! Feels like home. Cheap eats and very tasty. Always busy, food arrived quickly. My favorite place to eat. The oxtail soup here is also awesome.
Pollo_pesce_me
Arrived at the restaurant just before 6PM although the restaurant has just opened it was already full. This is my first visit and was excited to eat there after reading so many great reviews. Suffice to say I was not disappointed.Ā First of all the sambal chill they have on the table is just amazing, they are so spicy and full of flavor also the thick black sauce ( I am unsure the name) is also very good accompaniment. I ordered BBQ chickens, vermicelli noodle goreng, deep fried prawns, green vegetables and mushrooms on banana leaf. The chickens were marinated through the meat and it was very tasty and well cooked. Vermicelli goreng was one of my favorite dishes, I loved texture of the noodle and the flavor was perfect. I didn't love the cooked vegetables or mushrooms on banana leaf but deep fried prawn was excellent, it was crunch and well-seasoned. I bought a large bottle of their Sambal chili and the thick sauce and the total bill was only $69.Ā I think itā€™s really well priced. Service was fast and tentative. By the time when we were done, there were queues outside of the restaurant.
The restaurant does live up to it's hype. Highly recommend to anyone!
Matchachacha
To me very few places are worth queuing at, but this is one of them. I've stopped having chicken satay anywhere else because it just can't compare.Ā

Ayam Goreng chicken satay with rice cake, some marinated tofu, a mushroom pepe & es cendol would be one of my top 10 all time fave meals in Sydney. The stuff of food dreams....

Ayam Goreng 99 is always packed! Whenever I asked about why they liked the restaurant, the answer was almost synchronous: Killer Sambal Sauce! They do have quite a nice grilled chicken and sayur asam. However, the restaurant is not my cup of tea.

THE BEST INDONESIAN PLACE IN SYDNEY!! And this is why the line to get a table her is worth the wait. You definitely will need to have the special fried rice, paha bakar, sate ayam, kang kung and let's not forget that CHILLI!! Be prepared for that ring of fire haha
James Tanner
This is a huge claim but I think this is the best Indonesian place to eat in Kingsford.
It's cheap, chaotic, ugly and delicious, you go there eat, not to make friends.
I recommend you to try the brown mess of a chicken, it's cooked on a charcoal grill so it's delicious.
Casey, S'il Vous PlaƮt
There is a reason why the place is always packed with Indonesian expats and students alike; the chicken is closest to how they do it back in Indonesia. If you like spices then try their free Sambal but warning it is hot. Order coconut rice and the ayam bakar for a nice cheap meal.
Add me or comment if you love or disagree with my tales as I hope to guide you on Sydney's culinary offerings.

The best food in town!!! Love it love it addicted to it. The grilled chicken is heaven! And it's a really cheap place to eat. The only thing bad about them is their restaurant
Is small and old. You can to wait outside to get seats when they are busy. I don't mind to wait every time. Cause is definitely WORTH IT! Try the sambal(chili sauce) if you are a spicy lover!
Onara
Rendang and chicken sate both excellent, as was the coconut drink with avocado, jackfruit & grass jelly. There's a reason this place is always full. Probably the best Indonesian in town
Jim
Great Indonesian food, where the Indonesia/Malaysian people go which is a good sign. Charcoal chicken was great, only thing holding this place back from a 5 is the quality of the dining area that needs a face lift
Michelle
Best ayam bakar ever and wish this was also available in Adelaide where I come from. You have to get in early and start lining up just before 6pm when they open
Paul O
Not my all time favourite - but still genuine enough to get my patronage. The food is simple and very inexpensive.
It is very popular (Th, F, Sa) with a short wait time usually between 6pm - 8pm.
The restaurant takes your name on a list until a spare table becomes available.
Usually you don't wait more than 15 minutes for a table. There are so many Indonesian restaurants in this area, that if waiting is an issue you can usually go to another restaurant if you wish.

I go to this restaurant for the Javanese Fried Chicken called Ayam Bakar. Ask for the Breast piece (Dada Bakar) $6.50. I always eat this with a serving of Cah Kangkung $10 and a serving of white rice $2.
Mix these flavours together for a true Indonesian dining experience. The chilli sauce provided at your table is very hot, so use sparingly. It can be mixed with sweet brown ketchup manis sauce.

Another dish to try is the Nasi Goreng. It isn't the best fried rice I have eaten, but it is still tasty.

Complimentary free water in a jug is available free of charge.
There are many other different cold drinks available on the menu. My favourite is Jus Alpukat - this is avocado juice with sweetened condensed milk, and streaks of chocolate syrup down the sides of the glass.

This place is worth a visit if you like tasty Indonesian 'Warung' style food.
Miss_Ellie
Perfect every time. Not high on customer service front with some waitresses quite rude but overall the food makes up for this. There's a reason people line up in the freezing cold to eat here!

I have been posting a lot of Indonesian restaurant lately. Been missing home this past weeks hehe.. Ā Ayam goreng 99 is very famous in Kingsford area for it's grilled and fried chicken. They are also known for their HOT chilli which I loveeee! They closed on Monday and Tuesday but the rest of the days, especially dinner, expect queues! They are popular not only among Indonesians but also others :) The interior of the place is pretty similar to restaurant that you'll find if you visit Jakarta.. The question of should I get rice and chicken or should I get the fried vermicelli always comes to mind every time I come here. But this time I'm getting both! The fried vermicelli come not long after we ordered. It's hard to describe the taste, all I can say it's Authentically Indonesian with slices of fish balls, chicken and eggs. The smoky wok aroma is just like an icing on a cake! So highly recommended. Their fried noodle is recommended as well. Fried Vermicelli $11 Bebski ordered the Pepes Te

Look, I used to tell people not to judge a book by its cover (mostly because the cover of my book was a pudgy Chinese kid who wanted played card games by myself) but Ayam Goreng has supplanted my spot as the picture for that saying.

Itā€™s the insides that count and I wanted Ayam Gorengā€™s insides inside me.

Letā€™s get to the food:
PlanMB
Serving up cheap and tasty Indonesian dishes, Ayam Goreng can quickly transport their diners to Jakarta with the range of hawker style dishes. There seems to always be a line to get in, but the turnover is quick. Once in, you write your orders down on a piece of paper, and the dishes often start turning up within minutes.Ā
JB Jose
Excellent Indonesian food. The queue will be long but it turns over quickly, write your order on the notepad on your table and prepare for a feast. It can be as affordable or as indulgent as you wish ā€“ thereā€™s enough variety in the dishes to complement anything you order. Itā€™s a bit dingy but, hey, most comfort food restaurants are.

OMG i missed out on dessert, unfortunately out of all days going to Kingsford the bakery Dru mentioned, happen to be the best was closed ON A THURSDAY NIGHT *sad face* .. maybe next time.

that was a beautiful and very authentic tasting Indonesian meal. I would gladly come back here.

We are lucky to get a table for Sunday lunch at Ayam Goreng 99, the legendary Indonesian hole-in-the wall restaurant on Anzac Parade in Kingsford. We haven't been to Ayam Goreng 99 for a few years, it's great to be back. Today it's packed with the Indonesian Sunday lunch crowd and we are very happy to score the last table in the joint. I first heard of Ayam Goreng 99 ten years ago from an Indonesian bloke whose internet gaming nerd name was 'Ayam Goreng 99' - yes he was a fan. Ordering is unique and efficient - write down your choices withĀ provided pen and notepad and flag down a waiter. We order a couple of dishes and some sides, three dishes arrive on one plate, why not save on washing up eh? Paha Goreng - Deep Fried Marinated Chicken Thigh $6. The restaurant name 'Ayam Goreng' means 'fried chicken', so it is imperative you try this famous fried bird. The chook has a subtle turmeric\curry taste throughout the flesh and does not rely on salt or batter for flavour. Love it. Pepes Jamu

The moaning and groaning coming from the pair of us was of downright gastronomic ecstasy. We were satisfied to the brim, almost.

Ayam Goreng 99 serves up signature Indonesian style grilled and fried chicken and is oddly not located at 99 Anzac Parade. Most of the menu is quite a mouthful to pronounce for the non-Indonesian, but the great thing is that you don't actually need to utter a word at Ayam Goreng 99. Diners jot down their menu choices onto a notebook, which is then handed to the waitstaff - brilliantly simple. You come to Ayam Goreng 99 for the ayam goreng - fried chicken. In this instance, it was the paha goreng kalasan deep fried, marinated Javanese style chicken. Most diners knowingly choose the juicy thi

Love love it. I love its fried chicken with coconut rice... love the sambal too.. I took my partner here once to try its chicken and he loves it :)

The foods was great but the waitress need to smile and more friendly like the real indonesian

Excellent chicken. One of the best fried chicken I've had. Not atmospheric but still great

CHEAP EAT. Cheap and authentic taste. Been to Bali a couple times and everytime I ventured this restaurant, reminding me of Indonesia with its sambal belachan and nasi goreng. Apparently their grilled chicken is their standout dish, must try next time:)

Waited too long, food was meh, and a piece of chicken for $6?! You can get a whole chicken somewhere with that kind of money.
Waffley
Grilled chicken was perfectly charred, yet juicy on the inside. Best part of the meal is definitely the chilli!

Fast service, DELICIOUS grilled chicken. Went on a rainy Friday night with 3 friends and was sat immediately around 6:25PM, but the queue started lining up around 7PM. Their grilled chicken is super tasty! I think that was my favorite dish. We also had the rendang (heavy on the coconut flavor), nasi goreng special, chicken sate (very thin peanut sauce, not chunky like most Malaysian restaurants), mushrooms in banana leaf, and veggies. Food came out super fast, which is always appreciated.

I will definitely be back for that grilled chicken!

Must try Ayam Bakar. Awesome authentic traditional Indonesian. So-so decor or service but the food is great. Maybe not for everyone but definitely a great place if you are regular visitor to Indonesia and are looking for something to you back. Ayam Bakar means Grilled chicken, great with rice and chilli....YUMMY

Imma keep this real simple. If your not Indo stick with this meal, trust me:

Plain Rice/Coconut Rice
Grilled Chicken Thigh
Fried Egg (Sunny Side)
Kangkung

Possible Extras
Soto Ayam, Rendang, Different kinds of side parts (liver, heart), Chicken Satay.

Load up on sambal and you will be happy.

For the better versed in Indo cuisine give this a try:
Mie Ayam, and other noodle dishes.

Yuck. Not sure why people rave about this place. Bland food, cold chicken (eventhough supposed to be served hot), greasy floors, small servings....YUCK....never coming back

Good, but not great.... Friday lunch time and the place was packed in this basically appointed restaurant, all the sounds and smells seemed good from the kitchen and dining area, as were the mostly positive reviews here.

Capcay Goreng with mixed seafood as a quick takeaway was nice, nothing outstanding, maybe a 6 / 10... will probably come back and try again to sample a few other dishes as what I saw other diners enjoying looked great compared to what I ate.

Dont bother!. I have eaten in Jakarta ,Sulawesi , Kalimantan and Bali.
Never have i had such a BLAND Nasi Goreng. No small prawns , no egg on top no prawn cracker no chilli . Just gluggy and bland. Also such strange satay sauce. Almost like condense milk and peanut butter mixed. Not at all nice.
The place it self is fine for a basic eatery but the food is not worth getting off the couch for.

Amazing food! The beef and tripe sobot was superb, and we got the mushroom and anchovy pepes both of which were excellent. Ayam goreng kalasan was a little dry but beautiful marinade. Service, decor etc are not a focus for this place, you're here for the food. It's worth coming as close to 6pm as possible as you have to queue after

Burned not hot. Just had lunch. No good. One dish was burned. You could taste the charcoal.
I told the staff but they did not make an attempt to replace or refund.

Don't Believe all that Hype!!!!. I read the recent reviews before I went. Honestly, I expected better quality of food. The chicken was soft, satay is average, the beef balls were soft. The pepes - so shriveled and small. Even the sambal, though hot, was not tasty.

A big disappointment!!!

Finger lickin' good.. This is my must-visit restaurant at Kingsford. In my 8 years living in Australia, I have never found an Indonesian restaurant this good. My favourite is: Ayam goreng kalasan, ampla goreng and pepes jamur. The pepes jamur is awesome (btw pepes jamur is mushrooms wrapped in banana or papaya tree leaves). The pepes jamur I've tried in indo is not that good, maybe because this pepes jamur here use australian button mushrooms. They're more juicy and fragrant. The ayam goreng kalasan is like... finger lickin' good. As in, I still nibble on the bones after I'm done eating. To be honest I'll even lick the plate clean if nobody was around (oops)
I love the fact that they use the Indonesian-style food ordering. Provide a notepad and pen for the customers to write the orders, and the waiter will take them n process your order. There's a reviewer who said he hates it because it seems like the waiters don't want to do anything. Hehe, no dude, that's the Indonesian style! Pick up your pen and start writing!
The food here is pretty cheap too. for 10 dollars I get: a chicken, rice and the ampla goreng. Awesome.
Grapsta
Great indo style sate

Love this!! Always consistently good! Simple indo food. Don't expect much from service though- not ur typical Aussie restaurant. Very indo style where u basically serve urself. If ur looking for a quick tasty no fuss Asian this is ur place!

Closest I've found to Jakartan street food. This is the closest meal I've had back in Australia to Jakartan street food.

Pretty tasty and great value.
Adam
Burnt food everywhere.... Went there before they close for xmas break, my friends always told me to try the grill chicken so we did. The chicken was not grilled, it looks like it was thrown into a flame since the skin of the chicken was black!
The satay sauce also a let down, looks like they are using a pre-made sauce (not home made) and you can taste the un-authenticity.
The "waiter" (if I can call him that) job is only to take and deliver your order, and nothing else. You do everything else yourself, write down your name on the waiting list (no one told me this), get your cup and water jar/tea, etc.
Overall, we didnt like the quality and taste of the food, or the "wait staff" here. The only upside was the price is reasonable, but not that cheap.

Awesome food, good price, absolutely love it!

Best Indonesian place in Sydney so far. It's a casual restaurant, with good value for money food. Cooked fresh, the 'ayam bakar' served with the chilli garnish is to die for!
Pendekar
Good Value. Definitely try the fried chicken! It made us come back for more.

Good food, bad ambience. Don't expect a nicely decorated atmosphere in this place, and there is always a high chance of sharing tables with other customers, but if you come here for the food, then this place offers yummy dishes. My favourite is ayam bakar with rice, and I have it with the chilli sauce on the table and kecap manis.
Sandy Chao
One of my favorite restaurant in sydney !!! Especially when you don't know where to eat after lessons :) !
Ian M.
It's bagus!
Isaac
Ambience is not great but the food makes up for it!! The "ayam goreng" (fried chicken) is the best in Sydney throughout all indo eateries.. "ayam bakar" (BBQ chicken) is a must try too!! Ensure u gobble these down with their traditional "Nasi Uduk" (coconut rice).. Woops and don't forget the kang kong vegies with extra chillie :) YUM!! Service is always prompt and friendly. My only dislike is that there is a high chance of sharing a table with others due to the way the tables are positioned but this will never stop me from going back time after time.
