Review Funkey Monkey Cafe - Lakes Entrance

Wow, what a flavour sensation, chili scrambled eggs with beetroot brioche was off the chart. Highly recommend! Kids had waffles which were demolished in minutes too! Had to go tell the chef it was excellent.

Loved this place! The food was amazing, tried the Berry & Mango French Toast. Not only did it look beautiful, it tasted so fresh, delicious and well balanced flavour (not overly sweet, just right). Paired it with an apple, carrot & ginger juice which was freshly made and so refreshing. Would definitely recommend for breakfast. Although gets busy, the service is fast & efficient.

Nice little place just off the main street. Polite and friendly staff. I had a smash avo with poached egg. I think the egg was slightly over cooked but still very nice. Great presentation of the food. Well done

Yum burgers and they look special. We ordered one beef and one vegetarian burger. Both tasted nice. Chips are nice and crispy. Worth trying!

Unconditional recommend. The sweets are a tour de force. Milkshake was made as per the best. In the aluminium cup. Took some sweets to eat at home as very filling. Proper cup of also (T2). Hard working staff. Very polite in a tough environment for small business for staff. Well done.

Quite disorganised. Vego burger looked good when it arrived, but the patty lost its structure the moment I bit into it and went everywhere. The burger was intensely dry, to the point that it was a bit of a chore to eat. It doesn't need hummus and it could benefit from more fresh salad or a cheese that had flavour. Overall, a miss.

Super tasty, super seating area, super presentation, awesome price range, super portion, and that all adds up to a super experience. Loved itđŸ˜˜đŸ„°

They say that you eat with your eyes. But mine nearly bulged out of my head when his smashed avo and my berry mango french toast arrived at our street side bench. Even a passerby ogled at the artistry on our plates. And each dish offered a taste sensation. Funkey Monkey is an essential stopover for every visitor to Lakes Entrance.

With excellent, friendly service and great food and coffee, this is the place to go if you are in the area. It's a shame they aren't in Melbourne! I enjoyed the eggs Benny (which included an apple gel). My partner had the smashed avo. We both enjoyed our meals immensely. The also have a very nice wet chai which I imagine is hard to find in these parts. Will definitely be back next time I am in Gippsland.

I order a smash avo that is totally dark avocado. And I told their staff, they just told me that is the only one they have, they didn’t apologize just give me the unreasonable excuse. Too terrible service attitude, no food safety awareness.

Tucked right off the Esplanade on Meyer St, Lakes Entrance is a very popular Cafe. Opens at 8am and gets pretty busy right after. We were there at 8:10am and was lucky to find the last table, while seeing others been told to come back later.

Food is pretty good and fairly priced. My initial impression from the name of the Cafe was to expect some innovative and funky menu, however that isn't the case and menu is standard run of the mill. Coffee was pretty good and so was the hot cake with maple, kids loved it.

Surely worth a try when you are in this beautiful part of Victoria.

Undeniably the best coffee shop in lakes entrance. In such a small cute town knowing that there’s a reliable coffee shop where both locals and tourists stop by is a must in my book!

Ordered:
regular mocha $4.5
Apple custard

Review:
Delicious mocha which a nice balance of coffee and chocolate. This was my first time drinking mocha as I’m always a cappuccino or latte type of person but it’s honestly soooo good. The apple custard was flavourful with fresh tart apples cooked down and folded in with the moist pastry. Inside was a rich custard, although I would’ve liked the custard to be a bit more smooth.
Best coffee in town. And it seems to be a fairly popular place with the locals and tourists alike, judging by the crowds every day of the week!

Easter Sunday, very busy day at the cafe. We had to wait for a table, was told that might need to wait 30 minutes but it wasn’t that long of a wait. The cafe vibe was great, food is good we had big breakfast and egg Benedict. coffee is fine.

Perfect breakfast at Funky Monkeys. Service as well as the food was spot on and the fresh juices were awesome! Delicious start to the day. Highly recommend!

Unique combination in the potato rosti gave this dish a different kick. Love the taste of the potato being a bit savoury with combination of nuts and poached egg.
Fried chicken waffle is also their recommendation. The waffle is very nice and they add a dash of hoisin sauce if not mistaken. The chicken is juicy and tender, piled on a very well presented salad. Lovely!

(4.5/5) Nice brunch spot in this area. We celebrated a friend's birthday here. We were able to keep our birthday cake in their fridge. Good service! There is a big table for large groups, which was great for us. Most of the dishes were actually very tasty. The only downside was probably the quality of the coffee, but I love their artistic coffe cups. Overall, we had a great experience there.

A shining beacon of light in the seemingly turbid waters that are Lake Entrance. We found the food and coffee (breakfast) at this cafe to be amazing - very tasty, well executed and top notch presentation.

Best cafe in Lakes Entrance. I love the potato rosti dish. The orange cake is lovely & the coffee is the best.
Does get very busy of a morning but quiter in the afternoon
Master
Pies and Sausage rolls delicious. The service even during busy times is exceptional and personalised. A lovely experience during our visit to Lakes Entrance.

Stopped by the Funkey Monkey on a roadtrip. Ordered their poached eggs and potato hash. A very cute place but the vegetable offerings in the dish are on the meagre side.

We came on a Sunday morning, and it's a bit busy in the cafe. The services were very inconsistent between different stuff. We had our desert 'throw' on our table... coffee was good, recommend muffin.

First time here, walked in. No acknowledgement from staff, then enquired to what tables where free. Took them ages to clear the table, was full of the last persons dishes. Coffee mug, single shot :(. Hollandaise was vinegary. Favourite part of the dish was the mushroom, did have flavour! To give the staff credit there were numerous children running around which wouldn’t have helped. People control your children, some of us like to enjoy a meal out without being poked by miniature space invaders!

Food and service was okay. Coffee was not bad, not very hot though. Lady who took my order was not very friendly at all, didn't smile or ask how I was. Lady who made our coffees was super friendly and such a delight. Food was quite tasty, although nothing impressive - good value for money.

This place is pumping on weekends! I came on Sunday morning but there were no tables available, came the next day (public holiday) and got the last table.
Food is yummy and well plated!
Coffee could be a lot better, but maybe that just my Melbournian snobbiness coming out.
Great cafe, yummy food happy people.
4/5

Nice cafe with excellent foods.

My girlfriend and I came in for brekkie and we were surprised by the deliciousness of the dishes and quick service. Literally after 15 mins of ordering one Big Breakfast and one Egg Benedict with ice latte and vanilla milkshake, the whole things came out. Everything was fresh and cooked well. An absolute must see cafe for brunch lovers while in Lakes Entrance.

Excellent coffee with very pleasant service
Judging by the crowds here it's a popular place frequented by locals as well as tourists.
Worth another visit or two!

We found this cafe via the app on a stopover to Melbourne. We ordered the chicken waffle, waygu beef burger and a cheese toasties for the little one along with hot chocolate and coffee. Service was quick and efficient by the friendly staffs.

The food when it came tarted fantastic. My beef burger was delicious with the patty being moist and juicy. The chicken waffle was full of taste and went well with the Japanese katsu sauce. The little one loved his toastie. The coffee and hot chocolate was well made to finish our lunch. Am definitely glad we found this place for a refuel!

Absolutely love everything in the menu, and the meal sizes aren't way too big to eat, and fairly priced as well. Great atmosphere and really friendly staff - the place just has a really nice feel to it.

Delicious food! My partner and I both had burgers that came with chips and they were both delicious! I had a fresh juice which was the perfect and so was the coffee. The cake displayed looked soooo yum but I was too full to try any. They had a continuous stream of customers and I could tell a lot of them were regulars.
I highly recommend eating here when visiting Lakes entrance ❀

We picked Funkey Monkey because of its Zomato rating and it did not disappoint us. We were waiting to be seated at first but soon realised that we could just choose any table, grab a menu ourselves and order at the counter when ready. The coffee was good and the food came out pretty fast. Four of us ordered 4 different items from the breakfast menu and were all satisfied. The food was so good that we decided to go back for lunch the next day and were again happy with every dish we ordered. The Chia Pudding was something I tried for the first time and it melted in my mouth as soon as I had my first spoon. The Super Salad (V/GF/VEO) was a healthy and tasty option with exotic ingredients.

It is a nice restaurant. My bf and I order a "big breakfast" and some side dishes. I like their bread. It's edge is not very hard. The bread is fried and painted with honey. Also, their mash room is great with a little bit taste of garlic. It is unfair to say the food is amazing and surprised. But I consider it beyonds the middle level and worth to have a try in the Lake Entrance.

My gf and I went there on 2nd Oct Sunday around 11 for brunch after looking around the Sunday esplanade market & reading the many good reviews. The time we went the cafe was approx half full but all the empty tables available were not cleared. We stood there near the counter and wasted 10 mins trying to get the attention of the 2 waitresses for some direction if we should sit down at one of the tables or wait. They failed to even acknowledge us and ignored us even walking by us a few times, so we just left since clearly they didn't want our business. I'm used to minimal customer service since I eat out at Asian restaurants a lot but at least bad waiters direct you to a table or acknowledge you when you enter an eatery. This was pretty ridiculous

Friendly service, really good food and really bad burnt tasting coffee. Would go back for the food! Eggs are perfectly cooked and other food was great too
Great service and excellent food!!!! Would highly recommend anyone passing by or locals to have a go at these place it will not disappoint!!!!!!

We were in town for a quick coffee and brekky. Service was prompt and attentive. The coffee was very good. When scrolling through the menu my eyes were set on the Big Breakfast. The meal was tasty but was little let down on the portion size. Also the toilets were not accessible through the cafe, they are located at the back of the cafe (one has to walk through the alley to access them). Would not mind revisiting them again and trying out the other interesting items they have on the menu.

I really liked this place! Only fault is that it was a little slow & salt & pepper shakers were left at service area instead of on the table.
Great tasty breakfast with friendly service. I'd choose this place first over any others & would come back. Nice coffee also.

Great breakfast spot as we stopped in on our stay in lakes entrance. Service was fantastic very welcoming. The menu was great with lots of options to suit everyone and well priced. Coffee was top notch. The granola with warm rhubarb and yogurt was a hit with generous servings of rhubarb and great flavours. Will definitely be the first stop next time in town.

Hoooooly Shit
Hands down best 'Big Breakfast' I've ever had!
So amazing, and was actually a BIG breakfast as opposed the those half arsed things you usually get...
Great quality food and staff very friendly...
And finally... The apple crumble rhubarb donut, I think I just died and went to heaven... AMAZING!

Beautiful food. Wonderful service and the chef was so nice. If you are in lakes do yourself a favour and come visit this cafe. I went here with 7 others and everyone was absolutely stoked with the food and coffee

Delicious breakfast menu and good prices.has a nice city feel if you are missing home. The coffee is nice but the juices are better. Try the pancakes because they don't go short on toppings! Everything is made on site, cakes, pies, donuts...the works!

Yum yum yum!! we ordered the smoked ocean trout, potato rosti, brioche french toast and the smashed avocado.. looked stunning when the dishes came out! all delicious.. though the smashed avocado was a let down.. more like poached eggs on toast! very well priced for the quality of food.

Although we came for breakfast on a very busy day, staff still very friendly and serve quickly.
Food was great and well presented.
Definitely will come back.
Had a lovely breakfast. We had the smoked trout, potato rosti and the pancakes and loved all of it. Coffee was great too. They were busy but still quick to serve us and we had a nice big table near the French doors. Loved it.

Breakfast was delicious here and the iced Mocha was very good in size and taste! Service was great and options were fantastic on the menu.. Highly recommend if you can find a place to sit! Very popular indeed!

Recommend by my daughters, so we drove over from Orbost to try it. A busy Sunday morning, but coffee was good, my son's scramblers and my rosti with poached eggs were very good. My wife reported her Bircher muesli was too sweet and made with toasted muesli. What's that about? Overall very good.

Delicious coffee and yummy food. The service was exceptional and the staff were very friendly and attentive.

I had a chicken & avo focaccia which was yum and my friends' meals also looked great.

We visited on busy holiday and received good service. Lunch and breakfast options are good. Serving beers, ciders and wine is great too. The food came out quite fast despite being staggered. The kids meals were on the small side but not the drinks (kids milkshakes are huge!). Overall good value for money meals. A relaxing meal!!
Big Jim
Food came quickly the smashed avocado was amazing. The teenagers had pancakes and salt and pepper squid and chocolate milkshakes that got rated a 8.5 out of 10. Just awesome😊 guys - 100%

We were in town with the family and had heard good things about Funky Monkey. We had breakfast and coffee and both were ver y good. The service was good and the restaurant was nice and fresh. I can recommend for both a quick coffee and also an enjoyable breakfast
Smelled AMAZING as soon as we walked in. Decor is warm and inviting (we came during winter). Food beautifully presented and delicious. Coffee was quality. Definitely worthy of the strong rating, and even better!

Amazing food with beautiful presentation will definitely visit again!!

Amazing quality. So impressed with the quality of the food here - the creativity and freshness. much more than a coffee venue, a real treat.

Smoked salmon with asparagus avocado. Fantastic breakfast. - cooked to perfection, simple taste, fresh produce, complimentary ingredients & the best coffee. Well made!! Friendly people & helpful .

Rozanna

Simply the best!. Nothing more needs to be said other than this was by far the best breakfast in Lakes. After several other disappointing breakfasts this was a welcomed meal. Keep up the great work guys.
Annewright127
Sunday morning breakfast. Four of us ate there and all were happy with the food and service. Good portion sizes and coffee not bad.

I had the potato rosti with eggs, avocado & spinach, it was beautiful! Big serving & good coffee.

Amazing breaky and great coffee!. Had a fantastic coffee, and my breakfast cooked perfectly. Returned in the afternoon for their wonderful cakes!

Great breakfast, shame about the coffee.. We had a great Saturday morning brunch here.
My partner enjoyed the big breakfast whilst I chowed down on the eggs benedict. Both great meals, and very satisfied with them!
However, the coffee.... not so great. It is the one area, that a café really cant let slip. Maybe time for a new barista.

Great brekky destination

Great food, still some teething issues front of house. We (family of six) went to Funkey Monkey for Sunday breakfast to give it a try now that it's recently changed hands. The breakfasts were really good - especially worth it if you're willing to go for something more adventurous - and have taken a quantum leap ahead of what they were.

Front of house team were nice and charming but definitely under the pump. The coffee was ok, not bad, not great - which is a shame, because Lakes is crying out for a place that can do a really good coffee.

Nice clean well setup cafe, staff badly need coffee training!! Nicer quality coffee would do wonders... Very friendly and helpful staff n service ;-)

Very nice..... I worked in Lakes Entrance for 1 year and regularly visited. Seafood chowder is a must especially on cold days. I was never stingy with the butter as well :-) I had the Big Breakfast once and it was like any other big breakfast and very filling. So fantastic for hungry guys or lil female piglets like me. They also do some nice pies. Not too much variety but what they had to offer was fantastic. Did I mention the seafood chowder? :-)

Something's funky, but it ain't the vibes.... Not one for posting a bad review based on a single visit, just in case I got them on a bad day, I gave this place a few tries when on holiday recently. On no occasion have they even come close to changing my mind. Bad service, average food and coffee that proves to be passable provided what you actually ordered finally turns up... 3 times my soy flat white was delivered as a chai latte. These 2 drinks are nothing alike, but on each occasion I was told that I must have ordered wrong because they don't make mistakes! I can understand that perhaps in a noisy cafe soy and chai sound similar, but I am always very particular about stressing that I want a coffee, not tea, and the cafe was pretty empty and quiet at the time. And from my time working in cafes, when an error occurs best practice for customer loyalty is to apologise, replace the drink and not argue.

While the cafe is quite, the tables were still left dirty and uncleared from diners who have departed. The table next to us finally got cleared when a rather rude and angry old woman came from out the back and started clearing it while shouting across me at the staff behind the counter for not clearing the tables. I prefer to be able to eat my breakfast without being shouted around really... This same woman on one visit came out from the back to stand at the counter having very colorful and highly inappropriate conversations with the counter staff very loudly, for any patrons in the cafe to hear details personal details and offensive opinions that they really don't need to know. Perhaps this is a country town thing, but it's definitely not something I expect in a cafe.

The food itself was good. Again I have had issues with not getting what I ordered, but this has been sorted out when a young cook (who was friendly, polite and very apologetic) came from out the back and apologised for the error made by counter staff and corrected the problem with no fuss. The pies here are worth trying, and I will probably go back for one of those if I am every passing through again but it will be take away only.

Ummm... No.. Staff a bit sketchy. Not so good. Food average, coffee below average.

Cold day hot seafood chowder hit the spot, coffee also good.
