Review Rakuen Sushi - Leichhardt

Kevin Fleming
Really enjoyed my lunch at Rakuen Sushi. The quality of the meals was very high. The speed and attentive service was equally welcome.

A lovely small Japanese eatery with a wide range of menu options and friendly attentive service. Most of the dishes were delicious including the various sushi dishes, ramen noodle soup and bibimbap. The fried items are excellent and worth indulging in - the tempura were cispy and light, wonderful with the ponzu dipping sauce. The karaage chicken was also crispy & perfect with drinks/beer as was the chicken katsu. The gyoza was very tasty, however the yakitori and teriyaki dishes were not as authentic or enjoyable as I'd like. Both types of dishes were way too salty, had way too much sauce & in the salmon don it was drowned in sauce. Also we were charged $1 extra for each dish's standard white rice accompaniment which I only noticed after we had left looking at the bill which I found a little strange & was unexplained. A concise drinks list at reasonable prices. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Ordered last night and have to say that the service both over the phone and face to face, when picking up, was warm and friendly. The Sushi /sashimi was delicious and everything I hoped for. My daughter had two serves of baby rolls and a green salad and was very happy. Thank you!!!

A Great Sushi Spot with cold beer (Asahi) Friendly Service, fast food prep and a nice open atmosphere. Highly Recommended 👍👍👍

Food was tasty, liked the bento combos. Service could be a bit better and prices should be lowered a bit too.

Absolutely disgusting. This used to be such an amazing restaurant but the last few times we have ordered it has been nothing short of disappointing and tonight's 'meal' topped it off. This is what got delivered. It does not even deserve 1 star, it is that bad. You only have to look at the photos to see the poor quality, it was also cold. Very disappointing.

For $24 of set menu, you will get bot an ordinary bento but you will get a main dish, a plate of sashimi and sushi, a bowl of rice, a bowl of salad and a plate of tempura. Fresh ingredients, friendly service, I am definitely going back there.

This place serves good Japanese food. Good lunch deals. The sushi’s are nice but a bit to big a piece. The staff are super friendly and kind. We went for lunch and it sufficed us. Great miso soup

I went in with a group of friends so naturally we ordered a bunch of entrees, mains and sushi. The entrees were decent, the portions were smaller than expected. When ordering the mains, the server stopped us and recommended a more popular option in which we accepted. I really appreciated it as it turned out much better than we had expected.

I'm going through a Japanese faze at the moment and I am still learning Japanese food. For an entree we had the octopus puffs and vegetarian spring rolls. Neither one was outstanding and I have my doubts about the spring rolls being home made. The mains of pork pancake and Chicken Kaarage curry were both tasty with the chook being tender and crunchy. Overall i enjoyed what i had but I am no expert on Japanese food. Service was friendly and prompt. Worth a visit

Mmmm... one of the yummier Japanese places in the area. I’d give them a 3.5 if I could. Portion sizes are extremely small for the prices which is the main downfall. The food was certainly above average. Eel cooked nicely but barely any for $20. Also barely any rice with it. The agedeshi tofu was ok - this was average. The nasu dengaku has a nice level of miso on top and the okonomiyaki was ok as well.

The staff were super friendly but service was pretty slow. Their deluxe sashimi platter was pretty fresh and very nicely presented. Prices are pretty decent too.

It was ok - sushi was made to order, karage chicken had strange taste and mayo was weird - I think it had pickles in it. It was ok - I would go if hungry and wanted something to eat but given so many choices I would go elsewhere. Not my favourite !

Great food, value, and friendly service. As the restaurant is on the smaller side, the draft coming from outside through a very noisy door and air conditioning could really improve the atmosphere. Will be coming back for the set menu and okonomiyaki!

Overall not a bad feed. Quick service and reasonably fresh. The only poor dish was the Miso Soup which was a bit watery and didn’t contain any nori or much else.

Nice very light Udon with nice prawn and veggie tempura mix. Not the best soup base but sure did the job. Eggplant with miso also very tasty. Ordered the chicken teppanaki which was nice but the dipping sauce was a vinegar overload
Service was impeccable. Look forward to returning and trying the sushi.

Maybe I got this wrong, 45 minutes not too long for chicken katsu.

I need at least 140 words to complete this rate, what should I say, I am hungry and tired, just wish enjoy my dinner.

Thank you, for let me watch others people enjoy their meal at all.

You have a lovely day.
AMAZING!! Exceptional service and great food. We ordered the $25 set menu and walked out with very content full bellies. The food came out promptly and was fresh and well presented. Staff were lovely.

Tofu salad was yummy. Ordered the set b menu. My meal was quite good and authentic. My friend ordered some sushi rolls but the rice was falling apart, aside from that the food was yummy and there was a good variety on the menu and service excellent.

As a part of Friday lunch out custom I went there with my colleagues. It was a small restaurant on Norton Street serving authentic Japanese food. They have various lunch box option apart from Ala Carte.
We ordered Ramen, Veg Donburi, Yaki Udon and Sushi.
As I was trying Japanese food for the First time, and It was surprisingly Yummyyyyy :)
Staff there is also very friendly and Cooperative.
Really love this place.

Ive visited rakuen a number of time with different people and not any problems at all. The food is good quality served fast with decent service. Id happily recommend Rakuen any time.

Great little spot on Norton St for some yummy Japanese! Good prices and good food. The bbq beef udon is amazing and the sushi is always good! Just avoid sitting outside at sundown when hundreds of birds in the trees outside make it impossible to hear 😋

in a addition to short rib, we ordered two set meals: a set A meal with Teriyaki wagyu beef and a set B meal with teriyaki beef.

when the dishes were served, surprisingly the teriyaki wagyu looks the same as the teriyaki beef. when inquired about this, the female owner/manager admitted the served "wagyu" is in fact ordinary beef and say "they are the same with different portion ;you know wagyu is expensive". I was utterly shocked because I have ordered wagyu not extra portion teriyaki beef. I insist on getting the wagyu and the manager says" okay, but wagyu is expensive so portion will be small."and suggest change to terriyaki salmon. and I agreed.

well. after a long wait, the dish was served. there are only three tiny pieces of salmon covered with big portion of vegetables. I did not even touch it and obviously the owner/manager dont care how I feel about it.

that is my experience ar Rakuen Sushi as of Jan 4 2016. I will never recommend this place.

I went here with my sister for lunch ! I was craving sashimi and these guys didn't disappoint ! The service was fantastic ! My sister doesn't like to eat noodles and she asked if they could leave that out of her dish and the staff immediately said yes, we really love a place that is flexible and on point and these guys are definitely just that ! I would come back here again ! And just so you know it's BYO ! ^_^

A licenced Japanese on Norton Street offering tasty and reasonably priced food yet it struggles to attract a crowd on a Wednesday evening, as do the neighbouring joints on this fading strip.

I fed a party of six (including two 10 year olds) for $150, including some wine and beer. Everyone was happy with the array of sushi, tempura, udon noodles and sizzling hot plates on the table. Chocolate covered banana was the complementary desert.

Probably the best Japanese on Norton Street, though I have yet to try the sushi train newly opened at the front of Norton Plaza.
Prick With A Fork
Almost as lovely, in fact, as the bill, which without tempting the owners into raising prices, was very affordable indeed. If they were to change anything, the Prick would like to see Higashi get a beer and wine license: the green tea was lovely, but as summer approaches a cool glass of otokoyama would be lovelier. One hopes the authorities responsible don’t knock them back for fear of over-served patrons masu-ing one another.

The host really makes the restaurant. He's happy, lively, constantly fills the air (ear) with Japanese phrases and courtesies. A few mis-heard orders were easily forgiven with such a jovial character in charge. The presentation is beautiful, with really lovely crockery. And the restaurant has nice decor. Disposable chopsticks in paper wrappers unfortunately detract a little from an otherwise classy appearance. The food was good, too. Reliable, with some standout favourites -- sashimi, tofu teriyaki and udon. It's BYO, which keeps the price down a little.

Service is friendly, but food is unfortunately typical of a Korean owned Japanese restaurant. Our ramen noodles were the instant kind.

Little gem in Leichhardt. I just moved into the area and was very pleasantly surprised with the food and service I received at Rakuen. I tried their $10 lunch special - ramen noodles with a plate of 4 pieces of sushi. The food arrived quickly, was delicious and I thought was affordable. Restaurant was clean, ambience was pleasant and staff were very friendly. I would definately recommend this place and come here again.

Oh and the name changed from higashi to RAKUEN; it means 'paradise' in Japanese :)

-----02 Apr, 2014-----

THE ADDRESS LISTED IS INCORRECT !
IT IS 131 NORTON ST LEICHARDT

Really nice food, gyoza soft shell crab and sushi/sashimi combo great and fresh, teriyaki chicken even better sauce rich and sticky! Will be back

Went to Higashi back in November 2013 with a friend and we each ordered a bento box as well as some agedashi tofu. The bento boxes are fantastic and such great value. They come with so much food, which is all high quality. This place is also byo which is awesome.

Absolutely amazing every time. Higashi is by far one of my favourite sushi restaurants. The service is always great, the food is delicious, fresh and always leaves us wanting more. It is reasonably priced, the quality is high and the portions are big. I visit this place once a week and always look forward to it. Amazing!

Poor at best. I don't even know why people even bother to go to this place.
Granted that the price is very reasonable and the ambiance is pretty decent. Service was non-attentive. Kitchen staff saw me asking for service but didn't bother notifying the waitstaff. It took me three times, the third with a frantic waving of hand to be served.
The chicken teppanyaki was something you'd expect from a first year uni student. Undercooked and tasted nothing like the buttery and garlic heavy flavour it is meant to embody. Worst of all, bits of the chicken were left uncooked.
The beef yakiniku was marginally better. Beef could have been a little fresher if you asked me.
Don't know why the others have been raving about it.
I worked as a chef in a Japanese restaurant and I know a bad one when I taste one.

Have never had a less than perfect experience here! The staff are absolutely lovely, the food is is presented beautifully and is always fresh and delicious. Highly recommend! The kind of place you WANT to tip!

Love this place. Only new but service, food and prices are great!! Can't go past the chicken teriaki bento box for $12.50. For a non comlplicated meal, I think this its better than any italian place on norton.
Telanpop
Service is amazing. Food is made to order. Feast for the senses! Nothing negative to comment on at all.
