Review Japan City - Macquarie Park

Craig Spencer
Japan City is absolutely beautiful in every aspect; their venue is lovely and I feel like I'm stepping into a slice of Japan every time, the staff here are all wonderful - always smiling and have the most amazing, friendly attitude, and of course, the food is incredible. Great prices, even greater food. I genuinely cannot recommend Japan City enough to anyone, and as someone that works in Macquarie Centre, you bet this is my go-to break spot. ありがとうございました! 💕

Me Looking for a place for lunch prior to shopping. Went to this shop as the menu looks irresistleble but end up with a huge dissappointments. Here is why: Ordered chicken karaage bento. Pros: 1) design of shop feels like Japan Cons: 1) took a long time for our orders to come. Needed to ask several times. Other customers who came later get before us (No first in first out system?) 2) karaage chicken is cold. Felt like is prefried 3) pricy. Huge dissapointment. High expectation with that price range. Should had went to food courts instead. 4) customer service ❌ 5) self service water is not refilled. (Had 5-6 jugs that are emptied) Here is a photo of rice (those dry rice that stick to bottom of the rice cooker) is even crisper than the karaage chicken BTW. Overall experience ❌

A very fresh and delicious meal! It is a nice restaurant with even a shop of Japanese decoration and cutlery, and a Japanese theme interior with displays. The sashimi is high quality and the presentation is great. There was a bit of a wait, and the staff was very friendly. Prices are reasonable too and tastes yummy. Ordered a business set, salmon aburi king roll and seafood salad. I would definitely visit again. Follow my Instagram @jaelyneats 😊

Something has changed for the worse here lately based on recent reviews and the lunch I just had. The food has gone massively downhill, the beef udon is now mostly full of fat rather than meat and the noodles were barely cooked, it wasn’t busy either. The bowl it was served in looked ragged with paint chipping off it too. I’ve been coming here for years but I won’t continue to anymore. There are far better options now in the Centre than what I experienced today.

Customer services was terrible!! I went to get a tea set for a gift on Friday. I picked the set from the display and would like to ask one of the staff to help. There was no staff intentionally wanted to help at all. I have to ask one of the female staff. However the staff acknowledged my request but still keep talking to another staff. After 10 mins and asking for three times if she can come to help me to get the set from the stock, she still annoyed me and talking to her staff??? Totally unacceptable services!

Japan City restaurant is ran by actual Japanese. Food is tasty but their miso soup was so blend. Perhaps too much water! Service is also okay. I would love to be able to takeaway their seafood aburi don. Not sure why it's not available for takeaway?!

Worst service ever. Waited outside for 15min to be seated, and the waiter didn’t even look at us. It’s clearly they are so understaffed. At the time there were no people behind us, and plenty of table uncleared. We tried walk to a table because the kid was tiered, but then we were advised to go back to the queue again. Then they didn’t want give us the nearest table because it’s for 4 and we are just me and my kid, but 2 seconds later, they gave the same table to another couple (2 people) while other tables for 2 were available?! By the time we sat down, there are literarily empty tables everywhere. Everyone who works there seemed clueless. The food is getting smaller and smaller and lower quality as well. Won’t come back ever again.

Good decent Japanese restaurant, fresh sashimi.

Have been to Japan City at Macquarie Centre since it’s opening. Revisit it again post our recent visit to Japan, it is almost, if not just as good as you get. Highly recommended to friends and family.

Delicious authentic Japanese food. Service was super quick! (We went for early dinner). Ordered the salmon and eel don as well as tempura bento and both were great.

I went for the first time with my friend and the food is very delicious. They are quick at giving out your order and have great customer service.

Fish is not fresh. Service is standard. Bit pricey for the taste. Fish may be a bit frozen. Sashimi is lukewarm

The food is typically of a reasonable quality. Although the prices are quite steep for the amount of food provided, the ingredients tend to be fresh and served up at the appropriate temperatures, e.g warm fresh rice. Our typical go-to dishes include: the Hokkaido Aburi Don (combination seafood rice lightly torched), Unagyu Ju Don (combination wagyu beef and eel on rice) and Wagyumon Don (combination wagyu beef and salmon on rice). These dishes are typically very good and fresh.

On occasion, we also order nigiri. These are quite pricey but generally also very fresh with nice garnishes.

On this visit though, we found a huge bone in the kingfish aburi. As you can see from the size relative to a full spoon, it was massive and thick. It was lucky that we ate carefully, otherwise it would have most definitely caused a real problem.

Disappointingly, when we approached not one, but two staff members about this, they simply said: "oh okay" and just walked away. We just wanted them to inform the chef to be careful. However, they dismissed our courteous warning without so much of a glance. It was very rude and arrogant of them - whether this is because they don't think it's important or poor staff training, it remains to be seen.

Based on the attitudes of the staff, it is difficult for us to return for future visits.

Table service or order at the counter? This place is so confusing... Staff pretty much ignored us and table wasn’t cleared til much later. The food is ok, pretty expensive and mostly very very sweet. Their beef curry is special with slices instead of chunks. Match mochi is quite good but not enough matcha flavor. Xihuahua 🐶 will have one more reason to not like this mall’s food scene...🌚

I had an awful experience here.
Extremely poor service, I waited 25 minutes for someone to clear my table, I had waved & made eye contact, but still... nothing! I couldn't wait any longer for my food let alone someone to clear the table from the last guest, so I changed my order to take away. About 5 minutes after I left the table, a group of people sat down & the table was cleared instantly.

After another 15 minutes, I was given my food. I ordered 2 pieces of salmon nigiri & 2 pieces of teriyaki chicken roll & some karaage chicken.
It took them 40 minutes to serve me 4 pieces of sushi & some chicken.
Both the nigiri & the teriyaki chicken roll were below average, (especially the horrendous teriyaki roll) a complete waste of time & money. The karaage chicken was also the worst I've ever had!
I didn't enjoy the meal or anything about that restaurant, will not be going back.

Nice place and PERFECT food! The sushi is great, very soft and juicy! The environment is very quiet, with nice decoration. Must be the best place in MQ shopping center!

Too expensive. Very rude and arrogant staff members. No guidance for the seats. Their dishes are mostly burnt and oily (especially meat). Do they try to define Japanese food as unhealthy? There are many other excellent and reasonable Japanese restaurants, so I would definitely recommend them.

We have visited this place since it just opened. Their menu definitely have improved more and more flavorful.

We like simple Japanese food with fresh ingredients. I love their miso soup, it is made with fish/seafood stock and veggies (some people might think it has weird taste because other places might just give you the boiling water with plain miso paste).
Photos: soft shell crab rolls, seaweed udon, salmon salmon salmon set, unagi don and beef udon.

Note:The price is definitely not cheap but if you compare to other restaurants in the shopping centre, or in the area, it is actually just normal. We joined their membership option so we can get free hot tea whenever we dine with them :) . Sadly they don't open for dinner except Friday and Saturday (9pm only)
I wish I could give this place a better score but unfortunately it's nowhere near as good as Japan City in Top Ryde. I've been to the Macquarie Park restaurant twice. The miso soup here is different than many I've had but not in a good way, the flavour doesn't sit well with the other menu items.

On my last visit I had the Aburi salmon bowl, which I'd rate 1 star. It was bland with no flavour at all. There was too much rice in comparison to the salmon and it was not a very satisfying dish at all.

While the main dishes I find are disappointing the desserts are quite good. The matcha cheesecake is a favourite of mine, not too sweet, great matcha taste without being too strong and a great way to finish off the meal. The staff are also very attentive so points for that.

Im Japanese. So I know what is real Japanese taste and quality. I had UDON noodles with prawn tempura. It took more than 30 mins to be served and no apologize(also took about 10 mins that the table was cleaned.). The UDON soup was not hot(it was warm) and the noodles were too soft. It looked like been left for a while since it had been cooked. The prawn tempura were same, cold and the batter is soft and flabby (not crispy ). Also I needed to ask 3 times for the desert was served. This is not acceptable quality in Japan. Im sure that Im not coming back!!
High Tea Queen
Ordered curry prawn tempura set, the miso soup was good, the prawn tempura was just ok (2/5), the curry sauce and rice was average to good (3/5). I didn’t eat much of the salad.

Will I go back: yes for work lunch only, it has a big seating area for a large group of people and the decoration and atmosphere is nice.

Food is nice and tasty in Japan City. I like hot sake here. My friends and I sometimes order take away sushi and sashimi. I recommend to try this place.

Located on The Loft level of Macquarie Centre, Japan City has branched out here and ventured into Japanese dining. The menu options are limited and rather pricey for the small portion given (although marks for presentation and taste) so I wasn't quite full afterwards.

As a Japan City member, there are occasional discounts/freebies (e.g. free green tea on the day I visited).

I've been here twice now and enjoyed my meals both times. Cute store (restaurant combined with gift shop), so it's pleasing to the eye. However I wasn't a fan of the order and pay at counter first setup - I feel it didn't quite match the vibe I was getting based on the store design. However I would definitely recommend to anyone that enjoys Japanese cuisine.

Relatively new opening. One would hardly notice it's there. Tucked away near the corner of the top floor in front of the gym & away from the main restaurants strip. Their menu is a little different to the Ryde one. I tried the Hokkaido Dosanko set, which consists of some salmon sashimi, nigiri, scallop doria, and karage chicken. The sashimi & nigiri were fresh. The doria was interesting, the scallop were nicely seared & the rice were flavoursome, not a fan of the big piece of cheese though. The karage were dried. Overall a decent lunch set. Will be back.
