Great little Japanese restaurant that was really popular even on a Sunday evening. We ordered a variety of foods which were all fantastic. The staff were also friendly, professional and prompt with their services. Highly recommended!
The seafood used in each sushi was exceptionally "melt in your mouth" fresh, although not very strongly flavoured. I enjoyed using the wasabi and soy sauce to enhance the flavour. The scallops was also very tender and easy to chew with a mild flavour of the sea. . SALMON CARPACCIO. The generous drizzling of sauce gave a new flavour sensation to the salmon, tuna and kingfish.

This has been one of my favourite discoveries in recent months. Ayame is sophisticated, bringing a refined Japanese menu to the leafy suburb of Malvern. We had been discussing the merits of Malvern versus Brighton, and Ayame is certainly weighing the debate in one very clear direction. We began the evening with a very very large Ayame special sushi & sashimi platter accompanied by a paddle of six different varieties of plum wine in shot glasses. Both were execute perfectly - the plum wine was chilled, and the fish was fresh.

Long-standing Ayame has been providing this Glenferrie Road strip with modern Japanese food since 2008. Sushi and sashimi makes up a large portion of Ayame’s menu, and the Ayame Special Platter features a selection of items to simplify the choices for you. Tuna, salmon and scallop sashimi, nigiri, a mini special roll and miso prawn are on the platter tonight. The seafood is fresh, and the sushi possesses a good balance of protein and rice.
Very good food. We had the banquet. The salmon sashimi is possibly the best Ive ever tasted.
Service very good particularly when they aren’t too busy. Id love to see a more Japanese flavour to the decor as its very stark and boring. Perhaps at least put up some Japanese paintings.

Authentic japanese served with impeccable service! There wasn’t a dish we tried that wasn’t bursting with flavour! Top picks were the sushi platter which is a must and the perfect dish to share and the miso eggplant. The restaurant was buzzing and is a certain testament to the high quality food and service
Potential location for a date.
We went in with no expectations, just wanted a quite night out. We found Ayame to be cozy and inviting despite being seemingly short handed.
We started off with a sushi platter and the highlight of that was the sashimi scallops, sweet and juicy, just the way I like it. 😁 Next was was Hourenso Ohitashi (blanched spinach). This is a cold dish and it does make a good appetizer, setting you up for something a little more heavy, the Prawn Tempura.
As the main we got the Pan Fried Barramundi Fillet and the Ayame Eye Fillet. Both meats will melt in your mouth. Soft, tender and tastes amazing, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with steak, simply because it's been seafood all the way before this (just a preference thing).
All in all, great place, great vibes. 🤗
Ayame is a semi fine dining Modern Japanese restaurant situated in the busy Glenferrie Road, Malvern. The location is very convenient and you have the option to use public transport (Tram 16) or your private vehicle where plenty of on street car parks available. We’re glad to be invited by Ayame’s team to taste and experience their specialty.

This is a Japanese restaurant in the Main Street of Malvern and it’s spacious inside with plenty of seating.
Initially we started with the most incredible plum wine which is not on the menu at the moment but it will be soon I’m assured.
I was fortunate enough to try a range of excellent dishes, and I will highlight some of the most outstanding dishes.
I tried a range of sushi and sushimi which was delectable. It was soo yummy. and fresh. And the scallops were some of the freshest I’ve tried.
I also had a green spinach dish and whilst it didn’t look too appetising on the plate (sorry) it was amazing! It was so fresh, light and slightly nutty in flavour and definitely not what I was expecting. This is the first time that I’ve had this dish and I’d definitely order it again.
The chicken karaage was moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It was excellent!
The salmon was perfectly cooked and the accompanying sauce not too sweet. The salmon just flaked away, and it was excellent quality.
The black sesame ice cream was delicious although a bit icy. However the green tea ice cream dessert was fantastic! Really good!
Overall this was an excellent night and and o work like to thank the owner for their very kind invitation to visit their restaurant.

Ayame was a busy restaurant for a Wednesday night which was a great sign of things to come in this Malvern Japanese restaurant of many years. We sat amongst the soft decor we started the evening on one of the most popular dishes, the decadent mixed sashimi & sushi platter. This amazing dish had a variety of seafood from salmon, tuna, prawns and scallops. The salmon was impressive and interestingly gleamed from different parts of the fish, you could feel the difference in texture changing from the side to the belly. There was also here was also seared salmon with a mayo, delightful lightly marinated sashimi scallops and amazing tempura prawns on rice. This well thought out platter has plenty of variety.
We continued the sharing of dishes and tried the new menu item of sweet potato croquets. These sweet super crunchy duel coloured croquets had a delightful soft centre from purple sweet potato, the drizzle of tong Katsu sauce added the wow.
Eggplant miso was soft and smokey and great with white miso accompaniment.
The beautifully plated Teriyaki Chicken skewers was devoured in a nano second, the chicken was super succulent in a mild teriyaki.
For mains we had the salmon, the extremely generous serve was perched on a zucchini noodle salad tossed in a light yuzu dressing, these combination of flavours really complemented each other.
The tenderest eye fillet steak (cut with a spoon tender) was covered with a smokey miso mayonnaise and sat atop a variety of steamed veggies. This genius plating ensured the delicious juices went through all levels and I was able to soak them up with the veggies.
We had to engage our second stomach for dessert and got to try two tonight. We had the lovey vanillery creme brûlée and the traditional gelatinous mochi with an amazing strawberry flavoured bean filling (the nicest one I have ever had) and some punchy green tea ice cream.

Ayame is an elegant and beautiful restaurant serving up some delicious Japanese cuisine. They have an extensive menu from sushi and sashimi to larger main course dishes. Lots of different sake to try too! Would definitely recommend!. Ayame Special Platter. The seafood was all so fresh! The salmon was my favourite and just melted in my mouth. Scallops were delicious too! Would recommend! ★★★★
Came here with the Hungry Tum and WhiskeyGuru and had a very good dinner. This is a tried and tested fine Japanese establishment. The excellent value of the tapas was satisfying for the Hungry Tum and I shared the other dishes with my other friend. Feeling full and happy and the food was good. A must try if in Malvern.
This place is quite exquisite and pricey. The best menu I’ve ever come across, with fewer options than most places I’ve tried out before, which makes it all the more easier to decide. When trying out a new cuisine or a bit pricey place, always order something from the chef’s special, as it is extraordinarily disparate and desirable to taste in that restaurant. I’ve ordered the salmon bowl. It comes with soy sauce on rice, radish and broccoli on the side. with half poached eggs on the top. The salmon is sprinkled with different herbs which compliments the texture.
Tempura was fresh, hot and well presented. Service was polite and very efficient. Pleasant atmosphere and a local within walking distance or a tram ride.
Ayame has great Japanese food prepared fresh. I especially like their Special Rolls and California rolls because they are full of fresh ingredients and only have a thin layer of rice on the outside. Their chicken gyozas are very good and their sashimi is fresh and sliced perfectly. Would have been a 4.5 but I think their prices are a bit high.

As a returned customer, I spent another great night again at Ayame with my lovely friends from interstate. Delightful! All my friends were amazed by the food and its presentation. The ingredients are so fresh. I pre ordered the Scampi. Scampi Sashimi and Baked scampi head was to die for! It was so fresh and I can taste the sweetness. A group of us ordered Deluxe platter, Scampi Sashimi, Baked scampi head, Hokigai cocktail, black cod, eggplant, beef tataki, Japanese salad, eye fillet, roasted duck legs and udon noddles (sorry I can not remember all the Japanese names). The photos can tell everything. We were satisfied with the food. Oh the Japanese beer, sparkling sake and plum wine were the great combination with food. I tried for the first time, love it.
Service was attentive and professional. I appreciated the staff helped me order patiently (I know they were busy, a lot of takeaways). We had 3 noisy toddlers and a pram. kids constantly dropped chopsticks, forks and one of them spilled apple juice on the floor :( the staff just so friendly and attended to our needs all the time throughout the night.
The place was full and its always busy. A little bit noisy but I enjoyed the atmosphere. People know what is good and I guess this is why this place is always busy. Definitely worth to try!

Up the Malvern end of Glenferrie you will find this nit so hidden gem. Only a small place, so book if you plan on coming during typical busy periods. The sushi here is super tasty and a bit different to everywhere else I have been, in a good way. The service is always friendly and efficient, while I have been reading had a bad meal here. I recommend the special roll and spicy tuna roll, but everything here is delicious.
The food and service here are very good. The staff know the large menu very well. It is a bit on the pricey side so we don't eat here often, but when we do, we always enjoy it. I can recommend it here.

Ayame claim to have many vegetarian dishes on their menu, but, as my friend pointed out in a concerned tone, they are mainly entrees and salads. The teriyaki and tempura can also be created as vegetarian upon request. In the end, there was plenty of food.
Very strong and salty flavours (gyuu tataki had sooooooo much sesame & soy dressing on it which was plainly unnecessary for anyone's tastebuds!) but decent value & mostly fresh ingredients. Ayame Deluxe didn't turn out to be very filling but the gyuu tataki was really awesome value at $19, albeit the sauce overkill. The dishes ordered by people on other tables looked pretty big in size as well. Would come back to try out more entrees.

Possibly the best value for money Japanese food in Melbourne. Rates very well in all aspects, especially the sushi/sashimi menu. You mush taste the Deluxe Chef's Special Sushi/Sashimi. I have visited the restaurant many times and it consistently rewards!
Nice but $$$. We have been here many times and the food is amazing but it is very expensive... I would prefer to go to Koko @ Crown for $$$$ Japanese food, but this is one of the better ones when staying local.
Two thumbs up!. I just went to this restaurant last night and I'm still thinking about how tasty the food was! I ordered the salmon confit and yakatori chicken and it was superb! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the veggies were beautiful and crunchy! The sauce it was cooked was to die for! We also ordered the green tea, you could really taste the flavors from the tea leaves. This place was not cheap but definitely not overpriced, the food we received was definitely worth what we paid.
Standout Sushi. There’s no shortage of Japanese restaurants throughout Melbourne, however finding an establishment that ticks all the boxes can be a challenge. Thankfully, Ayame appears to cover all the bases with its modern dining room, attentive staff and superb food.
The sushi and sashimi dishes selected were all admirable and amongst the best I’d encountered for quite some time. The Kingfish tataki and cooked black cod dishes were both splendid and even Ayame’s gyozas were brilliant. The only disappointment the entire evening was that eye fillet (served with miso mayonnaise) was on the tough side.
Whilst Ayame isn’t cheap, it represents pretty good value when you consider what you’re likely to pay for comparable quality elsewhere. With corkage at just $6 a bottle, I think I may have found my new ‘local’ Japanese.
Superb. We went there on a Saturday night, the restaurant was full. Everything we had, from the Special Roll to the blueberry duck was just amazing, fresh and tasty. Service was extremely courteous (they had ran out of steamed rice and offered us fried rice at no cost). Highly recommended. The only negative is the noise level.
Outstanding Japanese food. When we cannot get a table - take away is ok too. Not cheap! But family friendly and love the black cod , as well as other typical Japanese dishes

Great food at a good price. Generally costs for us are $140 with wine. It is also byo so take advantage of that. Start with the tataki an gyoza and just move ahead from there. Sushi and sashimi are lovely and the steak I great as well. High quality without the costs of Nobu
