Review Sugo - Malvern

Victor Chua
Great atmosphere with even better service! They really make you feel welcome and are very attentive to your needs. My favourite was the baked bacon gnocchi which came in a massive serving and was piping hot - perfect for a cold winter’s night. The tiramisu was tasty but could’ve had a stronger coffee flavour in my opinion. All in all, a very pleasant experience and I would recommend this restaurant for larger groups (we went with 8 people).

Cosy and charming, great food, with amazing hospitality to boot. Seafood risotto is cooked to perfection and so flavourful. The baked ricotta gnocchi is incredibly rich and hearty, but don't let that dissuade you if you're afraid of it being overwhelming. It's comfort food at its finest, boasts bold and punchy flavours, it's an absolute treat and a must try. Definitely give them a go if you're in the vicinity.

A fabulous, long established favourite place to lunch right opposite Malvern central and DJ's. Air-conditioned seating inside the restaurant however I preferred the Al fresco dining nook to the side for a quiet, quick lunch. A great menu to select from, but for a lunch recommendation the lovely helpful waitress suggested the beetroot risotto. It was absolutely spot on, delicious and full of flavour. Quite a generous setving but too tasty to leave any on the plate. As I was in the mood for a Chardonnay, she also recommended the Martin's Pick up from SA which was spot on. Highly recommended.

I’ve been coming to Sugo for a couple of years and haven’t had a bad experience. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service is polite, attentive, and professional. There’s also a small covered courtyard area for summer evenings. I’ve only had the gnocchi here because it’s incredibly well made. Pillowy soft in rich sauces.

I love this place. The restaurant looks nice, the staff is so friendly and most of all, the food is absolutely amazing!! I've had a range of their pastas and Gnocchi and they all have so much flavour. Tastes so fresh! The steak is nice and they have a nice range of entrees! I'm definitely coming back.

Very friendly atmosphere, nice surrounding, staff are very professional and friendly who serves you with a beautiful smile which made us to go back and now few times for a lovely delicious meals. Our first interaction was with Sophie who looked after us so well with a smile and made us feel really welcome. The next day we met Vin who was also absolutely fabulous and helpful who went out of his way to accommodate our requests. Also Tilda was fantastic as well. We have already made a big booking this week for 15 people for a party. Thank you Sugo and the Team for the delicious food and lovely service.

Nice experience, Manager was extremely friendly and staff was helpful. Scallop really tender and delicious. But the steak sauce is a bit salty. Risotto ball is nice crunchy with creamy. We definitely will go back, first is customer service, second is dishes :D

Fantastic service and amazing flavours. Highly recommend this place

Spaghetti bolognese is the best from here! Always on point. Only 4 stars because I have had other options here for lunch (focaccia) which have been disappointing. I love this place & best spaghetti bolognese in Malvern/Armadale area.

My brother and I dropped in last night for dinner. Service was quite poor. Decor was cute. We ordered some entrees, 2 mains and a dessert to share.
The calamari looked like massive deep fried doughnuts and did not taste like anything but oil- quite dissapointed.
My chargrilled sea food was cooked to perfection however the pasta itself was bland. Better Italian restaurants in Malvern.
Sarah
5/5 for the Italian meatballs. Hadn't been here for years & didn't remember the food to be as good as the meatball pasta was. Maybe just a lucky order.

What a wonderful Experience at Sugo tonight !
The main waiter there knows his stuff ! Great wine recommendations From our waiter. Service was Superb and he really helped create a nice homely vibe in the restaurant. Would recommend the flourless chocolate cake with Ice cream yum yum. Thankyou for creating a nice evening for New Year’s Eve.

Dined here the other night with my family, there was great atmosphere inside, very cosy.
The wait staff were all super friendly and went above and beyond to accomodate for my dietary requirements. Our meals came promptly and the food was delicious!
Id definitely recommend trying sugo if you’re in the area

I came here for dinner with my friends on my birthday. Service was good but the food was really salty. There are certainly better Italian places in Malvern.

Absolutely delicious Italian food in Malvern ❤️❤️ It’s amazing knowing that you really don’t have to travel far to find that best food. Thanks Sugo for always providing the best meals one could ask for 💕

Love this place! My first visit and already look forward for my next one. Everything I had was so delicious, couldn’t find a flaw. Service was excellent, came on weekdays and didn’t have to wait for table. My favorite was the risotto with duck meat. Best one I’ve ever had. Everyone in my family loves the char grilled seafood pasta so much that we ordered our second one after finishing our first. Forget the pizza name but it was so good, something with napoli sauce. Chicken parmigiana was good as well, tender and juicy. Will be back for sure!

A very disappointing dining experience, could not have been further from "authentic" Italian cuisine! Our Fried Calamari Rings entree to share resembled fried donuts more than calamari and tasted accordingly. Further disappointment followed with our mains - My partner's Italian Meatballs with Fresh Tagliatelle, etc. While the Tagliatelle and the accompanying Rich Napoli Sauce were reasonable, the oversized meatballs looked, smelt and tasted as though made from 'Spam' - basically inedible and returned for a refund. My Blue-Swimmer Crab with Tagliatelle etc. was only a slight improvement with no obvious presence of Blue-Swimmer Crab. Service was attentive enough, no criticism, albeit lacking in experience and professionalism. Whatever this long standing "authentic Italian cuisine" restaurant was, it no longer is under current non-European ownership and management - never again!!

Food is enjoyable, staff are just very overbearing. Can’t even go 2 minutes without someone trying to get our orders and it continued in this manner the whole night. Even worse it was multiple staff so we never go the chance to enjoy ourselves. One staff member even admitted her manger was pushing her to serve us. All they wanted was for us to scurry our meals down and leave. No chance to enjoy our night. Disappointed with the experience. Thankfully the food somewhat made up for it.

Thé staff were friendly and came to our table to check how the meal was . The Spaghetti and meatballs I had was very nice . My one criticism is that I asked them not to put cheese in the pasta and they forgot .

My husband and I love this place! The food is always delicious and full of flavour, the service is wonderful, and it has a really great atmosphere.

We came here for a bloggers night and had the chance to try an assortment of dishes.
We started the meal with calamari, arancini, chips and olives.

The calamari was extremely tender and paired well with the beer battered chips. The arancini was firm and was subtle in flavour, I enjoyed the sauce that accompanied it

For mains we shared two pastas ( tiger prawn black spaghetti and home made pasta with beef ragu ) , prosciutto pizza and a barramundi dish. The pastas were extremely fresh and you could tell they were hand made - perfectly cooked with great sauces .The pizza was also a favorite amongst the table, a good portion of prosciutto on the pizza with a crunchy base .The fish was also cooked to perfection, I loved the potato underneath the dish and the creamy sauce really made the dish really luxxe

For dessert we shared a creme caramel and a chocolate cake, both were divine but just wish I could have had more

Thanks for having us !

Enjoyed an amazing dinner spread at Sugo recently! Some of my faves were their gnocchi (seriously so delicious guys) and desserts (how can you say no to apple pie?). The arancini balls were fried to perfection as well!

Still need to try their other pasta dishes which look amazing too!
Hello. Imnikki
There is an unpretentious vibe about Sugo that draws you in. The homely yet intimate setting welcome diners in with open arms, and once you're there, you're in for a treat.

Being lucky enough to attend a blogger event at Sugo, I had the opportunity to sample a variety of delicious dishes, but also made new acquaintances. Suffice to say, it was a wonderful night.

Starting off with entrees, we were presented with a delicious arrays of bites such as arancini balls, saganaki, chips, hummus dip and Sugo bruschetta. The beautiful golden crumbed arancini balls were deliciously moreish, and the smooth and creamy hummus went hand in hand with the soft yet crisped bread.

We were also spoilt with the mains and it was hard to keep up with all the dishes! The beef ragu pasta was the crowd favourite, and not surprisingly so as the sauce was simply divine. The salmon fillet was also very memorable, with its crisp skin and succulent flesh.

Desserts were a chocolate flourless cake and Tiramisu, and these two classic desserts did not disappoint. Each lay on different end of the spectrum - the former being luxuriously rich, while the latter was light yet decadent.

Thank you for having me!

I was so lucky to be invited to Sugo for a blogger event night and was treated to a wonderful array of authentic Italian dishes from their menu. The venue itself is warm and welcoming, with comfortable seating and ample table space.

The banquet consisted of a selection of entrees, mains and desserts. For entree, I really enjoyed the arancini balls - I mean, you can’t really go wrong! The Sugo bruschetta was also pretty refreshing. The Italian meatball tartalle was a standout main and seemed to be the most popular dish on our table. To end with a sweet note, the flourless chocolate cake was delightful and paired nicely with the ice cream. I wish there was more of it!

Overall, I had a really lovely night at Sugo. It was so nice to meet and get to know other bloggers too!

Just off Glenferrie Road on Wattletree is Sugo, an Italian cafe slash restaurant. I was invited her on a blogger night. I love how homely and cosy this venue is, it's a nice change from a regular cafe/bistro. It's more like you're entering someone's home.

We tried an array of dishes - it was quite overwhelming and I was trying to take everything in. The standouts for me where the marinara pasta and the meatball pasta. I would definitely come back for the meatball pasta. Special mention to the anancini balls - I've had my fair share of balls in my life and these ones were particularly good. What is common about all the dishes was they felt traditional, hearty and tasty.

With a menu like this, you will struggle to find something you won't like. I would take a group of people here who have varied tastes, but everyone will leave satisfied. Bellisimo.
Good Food Good Mood
I was invited to a blogger event at Sugo tonight for some seriously impressive pasta. We kicked off with some yummy bruschetta before moving into an array of tasty dishes including the visually stunning black spaghetti with tiger prawns.

Equally delicious was the beef tarragon ragu and I can’t forget the Italian meatballs in that rich tomato sauce. All very flavourful and perfectly cooked. There were other dishes at the table but I saved my room for dessert.

The creme caramel was a bit flat looking but what it lacked in looks of certainly made up for in taste. My favourite dish however was the flourless chocolate which was rich and decadent. Such a handy location right on the tram stop and not to mention directly opposite Malvern central, it makes for the perfect post shop carb loading authentic Italian meal
Connie
Sugo was such a cute Italian restaurant. We started off with some delicious entrees (The toasted saganaki was delicious 👌🏼) and then we had some delicious pasta. I would definitely recommend the meatball taleteller 🙌🏼 the desserts were quite nice however I think the mains were definitely better.

4.5
Came to a bloggers night at Sugo in Malvern and enjoyed a wonderful meal showcasing many of the new dishes on their menu. This venue has a well styled interior and home made pasta and gnocchi was clearly a specialty considering that the pasta dishes seemed to have the widest appeal.

I loved the prawns with squid ink spaghetti, which was nicely flavoured, while the slow cooked ragu pasta was bold, rich and delicious.

Standout entrees for me was the spicy calamari and I find it hard to go past a good arancini ball or two.

For dessert everyone enjoyed the flourless chocolate cake but the creme caramel with biscotti was also well received.

A really great selection and a really enjoyable evening that I appreciated being invited.
Zoe Garkinis
Garlic bread was nice and crunchy but a small serve. Not convinced the ‘baked gnocchi’ was actually baked, was a bit bland. The lasagne was ok, it came in a pool of sauce so would have been good if it came with some bread to mop it up. The sauce was a bit artificial tasting. Nice venue but overall wouldn’t rush back.

Monday nights are not normally buisy restaurant nights and this was true at Sugo.
We had a family dinner arranged and surprise birthday for my father in law. We were all warmly greeted by the staff and especially by our wonderful waitress Stephanie.
Drinks were promptly delivered by the Italian waiter and all food served at the same time.
A selection of pastas were ordered including vegetarian spaghetti, swimmer crab pasta, chicken pesto pasta. my fave was fried calamari as a starter and main was a tasty Parma.
Stephanie looked after our table of 9 very well and we topped the night with a byo cake.
Well done Sugo.

Comfortable spot for a kid-free double date night. Sophisticated space without being pretentious. Food is hearty and generous. Booking recommended.

SERVICE: 3.5/5
We were there for a 7pm Saturday dinner service. Upon arrival it was not too busy but by 8pm it was pretty much a full house, then emptied out just after 9:30pm. During peak hour the service remained attentive. They did all the right things by offering drinks, topping up water, checked when we were ready for mains, minimal wait times for meals, checked in mid-service if all was okay, etc however I think what would've made it more memorable would be to infuse some personality into the service. Still great service but that would take it from the 3 to 5 rating.

FOOD: 3.5/5
The char-grilled seafood linguine came highly recommended but I usually get disappointed by this dish when eating out. Plus, I was swayed by a nearby table when walking in...all eye-popping baked dishes hitting their table. Baked ricotta gnocchi it was! I would've gone all out and got a creamy cheesy one but that wasn't available in the baked version. The presentation, portion and flavour was good. It was just not amazing enough to remember or come back for. Quite a home-style version which is fine but I wasn't expecting to eat home-style coming here.

I enjoyed the entree selection more. We opted for the 5 starters for $35 plus the dips and bread. I actually would've been happy to have this tasting plate as a main! The arancini and char-grilled chicken that came with the relish were the faves.

I also stole some of hubby's lamb shank which was rich and delicious. It was perfectly falling off the bone and the gravy was just glistening...yum!

Desserts of apple crumble and meringue were average.

Our meal for 4 came to $270 which included 5 drinks...I suppose that's reasonable for 3 courses (although entree & desserts were shared).

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 3.5/5

KID FRIENDLY: Possibly in the daytime however night time is more suited for an adult only dinner.

Came here for lunch on Saturday before Mother’s day, had a great time, friendly staff, great food and ambiance.
It was our 2nd time here for lunch and both times it has been great.
Meals were big Italian portions.
Highly recommend.

Extremely disappointing dinner - could make much better Italian at home. Frozen pizza bases, poor quality bolognese sauce and over priced. Service was good.

Me and my friend visited Sugo restaurant and the food was amazing! We had the Char Grilled Calamari salad and the Pumpkin & Basil gnocchi and they were both delicious! The staff were really friendly and it’s a very nice and chilled atmosphere. Would definitely recommend, best Italian food I have had! I will be returning, thank you😊

Love the warm feeling and friendly service! Have dined here twice and was happy with both my meals! Parking can be an issue at times though!

Sugo is a very beautiful, simple and classy restaurant located on a busy street in Armadale.

Order- pasta, pizza, garlic bread and some drinks. The pasta was super delicious, pizza- not so much.

I found the place a bit overpriced for the food that was served.

My biggest issue was the service tho. The staff were quite absent and inattentive. No smiles, no greets and too absent. We got served the wrong food a couple of times and then had to ask for some chilli oil about 3 times before it was served.

Overall, very average food and below average service. Not likely to be a regular.

This is my one of favourite place for dine-out for dinner. Sugo has an amazing dishes that blown away all my colleagues and even my family really love for the flavour and also the ambiance. I recommend to try their seafood risotto. My Italian friends mentioned that the taste of foods really authentic and original especially their pizzas and pastas dishes. Beside dinner, they also serving a delicious breakfast especially the omelette portion is really satisfied me. A place that I cannot resist to visit!!!

Great food, excellent service, such friendly staff and amazing coffee. One of my favourite restaurants! The pizza was so tasty and fresh! Such a great experience every time we come here.

Sugo is one of my favorite restaurant in Melbourne

We have been coming here for last 10 Years
It like institute in this area. The food is always the same taste and consistency. And they offer chef special every a few weeks
I notice the menu changes a few time a year. But majority dishes are still the same. Like my favorite dish have been in their menu for long time.

The owner changed a few years ago, and they have run the business quite well after they took over. I feel like this business is getting better than before and most time they are busy when I come to eat.

I love the atmosphere in sugo as well. It’s very cosy and relax. The service is always good.

I would recommend everyone come to have a good dinner or lunch experience here

Great restaurant
We love the food here, the seafood linguini and barramundi are delicious!

We will definitely come back for more.

It's the one of the best restaurants around my home!

Went here for my mums birthday and it was disappointing. The service was fantastic, really friendly and welcoming, however the food and drinks were a let down. I got the gnocchi which was pretty boring as it just had a tomato sauce over the top with no effort or flavours, anyone can put a plain sauce over some pasta. The carbonara was quite boring as well and lacked a lot of flavour. I got a a mocktail which had way too much syrup in there and ultimately I was unable to drink it without pouring water into the drink to dilute it. Quite over priced for the quality and taste of the food.
I wouldn't return.
Missvu05
It was all right -nothing spectacular, standard italian food - average Vittoria coffee , good service - nice atmosphere. We had smoke salmon panini and bacon avocado - little meat , too much onion little smoke salmon , in my opinion i dont like it . Maybe try something else next time

Margarita Pizza was tiny and bland. No tomato base or anything. Pasta was extremely oily and bland. For these prices I expected a lot, lot better.
Steph Giles
Went for a friend's birthday dinner with a group of 15 on a weeknight - service was good and we got some reasonably priced quality wine. For meals - I got the gnocchi which was nice but nothing outstanding (it was better when I went a few years ago), my sister got the chicken pizza which was tasty but crust was a bit dry and crunchy, and boyfriend got the Italian meatball pasta which was quite good - the spaghetti in particular was good quality.
Flaming Goose70
Bad dining experience!! Came here a few years ago and the pizzas were very good so we decided to order them again and we were very disappointed. Hard bases and the pizza was very oily. The chicken parmigiana was not any better. Very hard & dry. Salmon was fairly ordinary but the best of the night.
Won't be coming back..
Angie Simmons
The place felt run down and the food too didn't please! The pizza's were way to greasy and the pasta's were overcooked with too much sauce / oil! The location is convenient but hopefully they improve

Nice!!!

It's a gem in toorak area

Great traditional Italian taste

Good service with beautiful wine
I would love to take my family here for dinner every week

We live the classic design. Make people feel calm.

They have Cheap price as well
Save our time and money by eating here

It's a quite enjoyable place

Opposite Malvern Central is Sugo Italian, with 'Sugo' meaning the basic tomato sauce in pasta. Lured by a Liven deal we found ourselves here for an early pre-show dinner on a Tuesday Night. Spoiler - The pizza was much better than the movie!. With seats on the veranda (smoking), side and lovely air con inside! For it was a summer's day we secured a seat for one by the door I had a great view of the lantern lit part of the restaurant towards the back. Skylights added glossiness to the tables.

Saturday 06/05/2017
Dinner with my partner, two daughters and partners parents should have been an enjoyable experience.

Sadly spoilt by the undercooked chicken ribs served to the children.
These were not only undercooked but were raw and pink in the middle.

This is both dangerous and a health hazard!

The other dishes ordered by the adults were ok but not exceptional.

If it wasn't for the excellent service by the staff this would have been a very disappointing evening.

We have dined at this restaurant before and have enjoyed it in the past, hence the return visit.

I my opinion, even though fresh ribs were served up to replace the raw ones, I would not expect to be charged for any of them by any restaurant with credibility!

Please Get your act together........!

Brilliant breakfast

Fantastic service, nice ambient atmosphere.

Great coffee too.

Highly recommend if you in the area and want a good breakfast
Christina
Loved the food and the atmosphere! The service was impeccable and the ambience in the restaurant definitely worth going back to. Maybe the drinks menu was a bit on the pricey end. But other than that it was a perfect night!
Wintice
Had the seafood risotto. The taste wasn't very nice. Calamari was huge and wasnt cut into appropriate size. So was the chicken in another dish -large chunks. The worst part about it is the mussel shell shards all broken up and mixed with the rice. I would take a bite of rice, and something would make a loud , hard, crunch noise as my teeth sinks into it. Careful of damaging your teeth
Melbourne Food Freak
I have been there for brekkie and lunch only. Had a big breakfast, def have filled the spot. Lunch by memory was pretty good too. Its more like a nice spot for locals to hangout. They have big portions which I like...their coffee has never disappointed me either:)

Their vegetarian pizza is to die for! Since I discovered it, I now get it every time! It has so many veggies and is a very substantial size! The carbonara is also excellent. The service was great, we had a lovely waiter serve us and the atmosphere was good. Will always be my go to pizza place!

Been here for last 15 years. It is in a one of the most well established Melbourne Suburbs. It's open for lunch and dinner. Great place for lunch and dinners. I prefer lunch, for meetings. I love the all the food on the menu. The portions are the decent size. Recommend anyone around the area to try this restaurant. Clean and hygienic.
Peter Giorgis
This place is supposedly Italian cuisine but I have never seen a lasagne swimming in a soup. The service was interesting as we were meeting friends who had booked and when we arrived they sat us at a table and it was only when our friends texted us that we looked around to see them sitting at another table. The $10 per bottle for BYO is excessive, and the food is just edible. I probably would only stop in for coffee but there are so many other places around the area that are much better.
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
It has been there for a long long time .... must be more than 15 years now.

A different owner, location A+, much too like about the set up and interior, although coffee and Menu is rather ordinary/boring.

Great friendly service and the venue sets this place apart.

Our family always come here for birthday parties.
Last time was my brother 21st
We did my mum's 50th birthday here a few month ago as well

This time is my birthday party.
Same as always. We got great experience in sugo again
All of my family are very happy with the food. Taste amazing. Great chef they have.

Service is on the point. We don't need to call them. The waitress are always around.

The price is very reasonable and they serve big portion. Some of the dish are quite cheap .like the baramuddi and the salmon fillet.

We always love sugo. They have good reputation in this area.

Strongly recommended

Sarah
First time back in a while as we were not living in the area. We arrived and it was quite busy and super noisy! Mostly because of one table that was so loud it was actually unbearable and I couldn't sit near them. We asked the waiter to move outside because anything would have been better than having to sit next to them (they hadn't even started drinking yet!) He moved us outside but noted there were smokers and also noted that I was pregnant. Rather than just leaving us out there he opened up the side area for us only to sit. It was lovely and quite. My husband and I were able to sit down, talk to one another and enjoy the food (which was lovely). Such great service backed up with great food!

Went to Sugo last night- must say it was a pleasant experience. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. The calamari salad and the panini sandwich was yummy. I wish though that the desserts- trifle and the tiramisu stuck to the more original versions where there are distinct layers to the flavours and texture. But overall a good experience and will be back to try other dishes in the menu.
Tardar Sauce
Sugo is an old favourite of ours - love coming here for a chilled date night. Highly recommend the seafood linguine. Don't be alarmed if you have to sit outside as inside if full, they have outdoor heaters. Definitely worth checking out! A solid 4 from happy cats Pokey & Tardar Sauce :)

I've been coming to Sugo for years usually sticking to the pasta and pasta. Went for something different the other night and ordered the American pork rib. Not sure if ti was good as the pasta but it was pretty close.

I don't usually write a bad review but WOW what a waste of a night and money. The male waiter (who's last night was tonight apparently) couldn't take a order to save himself. You should never be asked to repeat your order over 3 times and then have to chase up where your food is. I have some advice for you. The kids don't pay the bill, the adults do. So if you want to impress us, put our order through correctly the first time. You are in the wrong industry, you would be better suited as a kids performer. Maybe that's where you went when you walked out tonight.

Not only did the food come out slow due to the male waiter it was also cold. So kitchen staff, we trust you that our food will be cooked through and fresh.. Not cold and tasteless. Menu has changed but that's no excuse for what came out of the kitchen tonight. Cold tapas and warm pasta.

It wasn't even a busy night, we got there at 6pm and when we left at 9pm it wasn't busy like it has been in the past.

I should have known it was going to be a bad night when he forgot to add ham to the kids pizza. How did this happen, when you wrote everything on your pad?!?!
Tapas all came out at different times, pastas were cold and wrong dishes were made. What a disaster!!

We were not the only table to suffer such bad service from this male waiter and food not arriving or up to the usual standard.

If you think by adjusting bill makes it all better.. It doesn't.
We all left hungry.

Bring back the old Sugos. Get the old owners, chefs & waitstaff back.
Such a disappointment.
Sad really, we loved that place and we will never be back.

Beautiful place. Quite traditional Italian food taste

We can smell the garlic and tomato frying from the kitchen. Same in our dish.we found the smoky style food. Really attractive.

Service is good. Quite attended.
We like the salon dish here. Well done.

I recon the seafood pasta and salmon salad here

Have not tried much other dishes. Would like to come back for the rest of the menu.

Good coffee and wine here. I think they are using premium vittoria coffee bean. It's strong and nice taste.
Their wine are medium class range. Quite nice and good price. Lots of them you can choose by glass.

The breakfast is very nice. Well cooked and presented. I been here for breakfast before. I think it's better than before now.

Really comfortable place. Lovely staff. It's a enjoyable experience for us.

We will definitely come back soon.

Went on a monday lunchtime. Used to be a regular but haven't been in ages. Tiny wine list of mediocre quality. Can't even get a glass of local sparkling by the glass (only bottles!) Surely a piccolo would be possible? Asked the waitress about the calamari and she said she'd recommend the pieces not the rings "if she was honest". When asked why she said "they buy the rings in". Seriously? You'd think a place of trying to be of this calibre could do it's own calamari. What we did order was barely basic "pub" quality...arancini, chicken skewers, meatballs, calamari and dip. THE DIP didn't even come with bread! You had to order that SEPARATELY!!! Oh seriously!!!
We won't be back

Nice and cosy place. I am meeting my clients in sugo for a meeting and lunch here

Food is fast and good. Service is great. It our high school reunion. 12 of us are all enjoyed with sugo restaurant.

The food was great
I had the American pork rib which is quite good and quite cheap comparing to other place.
My friend had the risotto here. The seafood one is really tasty.

We love the dessert here well.
End up with a few of us were drunk as we did have a good enjoyable dinner here in sugo. Service was good as well. Nice waitress.

Definitely would be back for more

Very comfortable setting

Relax and sunny in the afternoon

Good for big function like 20-30people

Love the atmosphere there. The wooden theme

Food is quite traditional Italian cuisine. It's tasty and the coffee is nice

Sugo, this is your first warning. We have long been a fan of your trifle from many years back. Despite the generous servings of the main meals you produce, I always leave room to finish off with a trifle. I am not sure what happened, but the trifle from last week was a total let down. The ice cream quality has gone, the fresh crunchy crumbs were non detectable and it just looked different. I hope it was just a temporary lapse because if it's a permanent change, I doubt we would be coming back.

Went for a family dinner. Love the pasta here.

Good atmosphere. We love it.
The food has good taste and portion. It's a good place for family.

Love the ribs

Nice place
Traditional Italian taste. Fresh made and unique smell
Good atmosphere and excellent customer service
We would love to come back

Poor service. Overpriced. Bland taste would not come again . Settings and decor is fine. Serving is big. Very disappointed could not understand the high review. The door is always bangiinng loudly

When you visit Italy for the first time,
The food is one of the most amazing things that the experience encompasses.
Sugo is so far from this experience that i am amazed that people pay for the slop that is served.
When i visit places like this that assume they can serve bland italian to the masses,
I am sad to be italian, and dissapointed that this is allowed to happen with out being properly marshalled.
Don't waste your time.

The best lamb shank I ever had in Melbourne.
It's very tasty, fresh and juicy.

The tapas are very nice as well

We would recommend this venue.

The lamb shank, You should try. Remember my word. Haha

A nice experience but I do think the meals look better than they taste. The gnocchi was nice and fresh but the flavour was a bit lacklustre. Nice staff, warm atmosphere although it can get very noisy.

Come here occasionally during work for lunch. The pizzas are great especially the gluten free base it doesn't fall apart and tastes great. The coffee is okay, but I wouldn't come here just for a coffee
Gracie Casanova
We are regular customers here for years. We watched Sugo up and downs.
We guess they have a new good management team now. The food is better and the service is excellent

We always love the risotto here.specially the seafood ones

We would recommend my friends to come to try
You would not regret the new life of Sugo
I come to sugo quite often. They got very good quality food here. I like the atmosphere as well. Relax. Cosy. Wi fi.
Love to be here. Recommended to everyone

I came here with my family for the dinner here. The food is quite traditional italian. I love the smell and taste. It has the kind of old fashion style of italian cuisine. We enjoyed the experience here. Definitely would come back for more meals. Its the one of the best restaurants in malvern area.

I love the set-up it feels like your having pasta in Nonna's house. I wouldn't say the food is outstanding but the pasta is quite good. Pizza servings are a bit small though. A good restaurant to bring the family as the menu has something for everyone.
Allen Rao
We come here for years.
It's a beautiful venue and they got the very tasty pastas here. I love the seafood pasta. My kids love the antipasto here a lot.

Sugo is our family restaurant. The service is good and food is nice.

I would recommend the seafood here.
And they have special and main course as well. Should come and try

I've been going to Sugo for years and always had fairly good experience, however my most recently venture was far from great and for this reason my family will not likely return.

Started with garlic bread which was great but unfortunately all down hill from here. Hungry, we all ordered different pasta dishes but we're disappointed when they arrived and we all had our first taste. They were all steaming hot, microwaved or blasted on the stove I'm not sure, and the sauces for all dishes were underwhelming and very bland.

The portions were large so if your hungry and keen for a quick bit this is your place, however I wouldn't call this an authentic Italian restaurant!

If the presentation was anything to go by I was in for delicious meal! Unfortunately the meals at Suga looked a lot better then they tasted! I order the spaghetti with seafood with an oil base. I'm hesitant to use the word bland, but thats honestly how I felt about the food. The only positive was the small amounts if crab in there which were super tasty. The other two in my party felt the same way about their dishes-fettuccini with char grilled calamari and linguine. We also ordered 3 large coffees-which were too bitter-I wonder if it was a case of losing it's quality bc of the size?!?
On a positive the cafe itself was large with lots of seating and the service was friendly.
Genevieve Graham
Top quality pastas! So much choice and great service. I have never had a less than perfect meal from here. Did I mention of fresh the produce is? It's perfect for dates and meals "with the family" alike. Great local haunt!

Beautiful place.
Love to come back with family

They got big space and easy for kids and toddlers

We love the food
It's very tasty Italian pasta

We love to be back soon

Pictured:

- Pumpkin and basil gnocchi with tomato, basil, garlic and olive oil (Main size, bottom right)

- Spaghetti with char grilled seafood, garlic, lemon, fresh parsley & chilli (tomato based, bottom left)

- Bucatini with atlantic salmon, roast fennel, baby spinach, extra virgin olive oil, white wine & fresh dill
(top)

Not pictured (but someone else ordered) was the traditional meat lasagne with Napoli sauce & melted mozzarella. This was massive. Consider sharing this with someone if you intend on ordering this.

Portions in general was quite substantial, most of the people at our table did not finish what they ordered.

Overall good service and food came out at a reasonable time, but a little expensive for a weekday work lunch compared to the other restaurants nearby.

One of my favorite restaurant in melbourne.
Very traditional taste of italian food.
They have big space for big groups. Its quite comfortable and cosy when you sit there.
I would recommend it to everyone. The pasta is quite specialised here. You cant easily find a gourmet pasta restaurant like this in melbourne.

Good dinner experience here

its a beautiful place. it has its style. Recently a friend and I paid a long overdue visit to our favourite local Italian restaurant in Malvern, Sugo. As usual the service and staff were fantastic, nothing was too much of an ask and all service was quite prompt. The meals were, as I have come to expect, delicious, superbly presented and of a very generous size.My friends and I would recommend Sugo to anyone who is looking for Italian cuisine and all round good service. p.s They also do great breakfast and always have amazing coffee :)

Always a good option. A little pricey but food is good. Service and facilities are top notch. A good place for families and couples. Corkage was a little expensive at 5 per head.
Hungry_Hungry_Haydec
Great little find! My wife and I had to venture to Malvern on the weekend and happened to stumble across Sugo for lunch. The warm atmosphere, friendly staff and tasty, large portions of Italian food make for the perfect little stop at any time of the day!
Salono
The food here is consistently tasty and well prepared and the service always friendly and efficient. Great for both lunch or dinner and the portions sizes are commensurate with the price. I will continue to eat here on a semi regular basis.

went to Sugo last week when my family was down for a visit. had a table of 6, entrees mains and desserts.
very friendly service, attention to the details, suggestions of specials. they made us feel welcome. our food was delicious as always. definitely would recommend the pasta with veal, antipasto selections and fresh salads. for a busy Saturday night our food arrived fast.
there is also a nice selection of wines and cocktails - they even made me a espresso martini upon a request.
and when we were paying the bill we got a voucher for next visit - $50 !

Sugo is a nice local restaurant, with friendly atmosphere, great service and delicious food. I've been visiting it for many years now and would definitely recommend it.

This place was very good 12 months ago but now it has become below average. My calamari was over cooked and tasted like rubber. I was also really turned off seeing the chef continuously licking his fingers. Disgusting!!
Sharon
Disappointing service today. Entrees took 40minutes to arrive for lunch & the calamari tasted like rubber. The mains then quickly followed. We received a pseudo apology saying it was busy but 1/3 of restaurant was full... I usually enjoy the gnocchi but today it tasted like dough! (Not the good kind) and the amatriciana sauce had no kick to it. Wine was good! I've given this restaurant numerous tries over the last 10 years (wow that's a long time) and I've got to say it's hit and miss!

Meal - Wide selection of Italian dishes, have tried the spaghetti with prawns and the saffron risotto on different occasions. Nothing spectacular but worthwhile going back to.
Price - Reasonable.
Portion size - OK.
Service - Usually busy but always friendly.
Ambience - Neat looking restaurant in a good spot for a casual lunch.

This place is one of the best pizza places I have ever been to. It has the best margarita and chips that are to die for. The desserts are the most delicious things I have ever tasted. I would give anything for the apple pie. The apple pie is humongous but if you have seen my other reviews you'll know that i love big servings.
-Matthews son
P.S. We know other people have had issues with ownership but seriously. You have to admit the food is good. Get over it

Change of owners.... Wow what a shame!!!
We used to love Sugo, so close to home and a very relaxing place to visit where you always knew you would get amazing food and great service.
After visiting tonight we were feeling very confused. Service was terrible - several waiters serving the same table, not listening to the customer, no sharing plates provided when we explicitly said we were sharing, pushing to sell drinks and entrees. Most shocking was upon paying, I was forcefully 'tapped' by who I believe was the manger and told to move as food was coming through... Incredibly rude!!
Everything felt rushed and out of control.
Food was still pretty much the same so if you used to love this place I would suggest ordering take away.
So disappointed!
Delicious local Italian. The meatballs and the chicken lasagne are always delicious.
Fairly expensive (not somewhere we go weekly!) and sometimes quite a wait on the food but we always have a lovely evening and visit a few times a year.

not that cheap but comes with big portion. I reckon a main dish can fill an empty stomach pretty well. Food comes with strong taste! a very nice local Italian restaurant.

We recently went to Sugo Restaurant with a family group of 14 people for dinner to celebrate a special occasion (my 60th Birthday). We have been to Sugo numerous times over several years, in groups of various sizes. Always previously we have thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service has been excellent.

Unfortunately, this was certainly not the case this time. When I organised the booking I spent some time discussing the seating requirements and was assured that we would be seated in a secluded, comfortable area.

On arrival we were directed towards a large table in the window which had bench seats all around it with no backs on them. I explained that on booking I had specifically requested that we not sit on these benches due to several medical conditions.

This caused some consternation and various staff were consulted before finally arriving at a compromise which was a large table in the centre of the restaurant. While the seating was adequate, unfortunately one end of the table was beside the noisy bar and the other in the very cold breeze coming from the outside sitting area. It was also extremely dark and we finally had to ask if the lights could be turned up above the table so that everyone could read their menus.

The service at the beginning was good, both with regards to drink and food orders but unfortunately it deteriorated after this. No-one asked if we wanted any subsequent drink orders and we had to ask each time for the water bottles to be refilled.

The food, when it finally arrived, was served in a very staggered manner, with the last of the main courses and desserts arriving when the first ones had almost been finished. Also, the quality or taste of the food did not seem to be anywhere near the same as when we had been previously.

Overall, it was a very disappointing night, especially for me as it was a very special occasion.

I rang the restaurant the next day and spoke to the gentleman in charge to say that I had been quite unhappy with the night. I explained that I would prefer not to write a negative review after we had been so happy with the restaurant over so many years and explained that I had written a letter to the restaurant and he gave me an email address and postal address to send it to.

I sent this the next day and have now waited for 6 weeks for any reply but unfortunately have not received one.

There are a lot better Italian restaurants to go to.

Very overpriced for the poor quality food. I understand its recently changed hands and they seem to have cut corners and lost the plot. Sad - this was an old favourite of ours.
My wife booked a 40th birthday lunch (12 people) at Sugo. While the staff were friendly and the seating we had outside was good, thats where it ended. All of our meals were very average and service was confused at best. For example, we gave up asking for the correct cutlery and went and found it ourselves! A mojito cocktail came out looking like slimey pond water, and didnt taste much better (the rum was missing too!) - how nobody noticed is beyond me! The bread was hard and cold. Coffee tasted burnt. Fish was poorly cooked (undercooked on one side, burnt on the other). Small broken shell pieces in the seafood linguini. On and on .......
We wont go back.
Toff.
Our family's traditional dinner, late lunch or breakfast.
The food is top notch, the service is always friendly and family-like.
We love you Sugo :)

Should change the name from Sugo to Shito.

Why?

Shit service - lost my meal order.

Shit value - for fairly basic dishes - expect to pay high prices.

Shit Food - most of the pizzas on our table were thick, doughy and undercooked. Except mine - it arrived 20 minutes after everyone was served - I had to enquire - and it was hideously overlooked and covered in some weird sweet tomatoey sauce.

The place was half empty and I realized why - I doubt they'll survive a further six months.

Sugo malvern. Would not visit again. On one visit was served bread covered in mould.Complained but charged full price. Last saturday we were taken there waitress had trouble understanding our menu choices and wegot two correct orders and one incorrect which meant that one of us didnt get his meal until the other two had finished theirs. We were stillcharged full price. ,Would not now recommend this restuarant to any ptospective diner

Sugo pricing. Was very happy with spagetti putanesca but this must be one of the few Italian restaurants that dont give you a couple of pieces of bread to go withthe meal. For $25 i did notexpect an extra $2 for 2 small pieces of bread.
Pity greed is taking over

We have been dining at this venue for a number of years and have had decent experiences. Our last visit, however, was very unprofessional and rude. As we sat down and waited for a few friends to arrive, we were asked to get up and move to a different table as another party of four 'wanted our table'. I would have hoped the staff were able to handle such a bizarre and petty request from such an arrogant party as we were already seated at this table, but perhaps this parties money was worth more than ours. Either way, we won't be dining here again.

I went there with my wife and another couple. We checked before if it was BYO to which they said yes.... But wine only!! I brought a bottle of Mumm to which they said...."wine only"!!! I found this very confusing? They relented once I took them to task that champagne IS a wine....the owner stood back to see the result....very strange. Their champagne list was extremely expencive, which is why they didn't want me to use my own wine. Pizza was to "boutique" for my liking....I am a traditionist...they did not know what a capriciosa was?? (I hope I spelt it correctly) what they did do was no where near what I wanted!
Not going back.....waste of time.

Bad service - have been ordering delivery for over a year and tried to order and they have told me that there is a minimum order $30 and heard the guys talking about me on the phone.. Rude and ignorant. Have been going to Sugo for years and every their regular staff have left they have no idea and don't care about their customers

Wouldn't recommend going here. My husband and I went to Sugo. Ordered our coffees which were cold. Waited for about half an hour and still no food. My husband went and asked the waitress when our food was coming, about 10 mins later the waitress came back over and said "I'm going to have to take your order again". So we walked out, we weren't prepared to wait another half hour. Also a couple of other tables sent their coffees back because they were cold. We wouldn't recommend going there.

Excellent Service. Ordered a few meals for home delivery and they were delivered in great time. There were a few problems with the packaging of the chips (plastic container, no air holes) and the sauce was forgotten, however I rang up and mentioned this and they were replaced promptly with an extremely generous serving, no hassle.

Great customer service and excellent food. Will definitely order from here again soon.

Pancakes. I had the pancakes with bacon for breakfast and it was absolutely amazing!!! It wasnt very busy that morning so the staff were very helpful and quick, would come again

Rude, entitled staff. Rude staff - too busy (could only have been tops 30 people in the restaurant) to do the basics like take drink orders, remove menus or bring water. Never going back and neither will the other 14 people I dined with. Overpriced and attitudes to customers all wrong,.. Food is not worth the amount they charge. Items ordered never came out, they attempted to charge us $10 corkage per 300mL bottle, and the waitress rudely replied that was final and you have to take it up with the manager. When approaching the manager, the same waitress was loudly insulting our table, however the message had been relayed incorrectly as it was to be charged as corkage per person which was absolutely fine and suggested by us, not per glass. Rude waitress who incorrectly informed us and ruined our lunch wth her disrespectful attitude. Drink orders incorrect, table not cleared and pizzas undercooked and tasteless. Table not catering for the amount of guests i booked for, and no kids menu!

We've eaten here on several occasions. While the food is not very special or unique, there is a large variety, it is reasonably priced and generous portions. The deserts are really nice, like the flourless chocolate cake, the chocolate mousse, profiteroles etc. it also has a nice atmosphere.

People at work keep telling me that the food at Sugo is really nice and that I should really try it. I’m surprised that I didn’t take their recommendation to come here sooner because when we went to Sugo for my boss’s 60th birthday dinner celebrations, I was thoroughly impressed with the food they were serving up. Everything looked, smelled and tasted fantastic. And believe me, after that night I was definitely keen on coming back during lunch time to try some of their other food considering they are located just opposite to where I work. Some chips to start the evening. The chips were very crispy and didn’t have that oily feeling. Fresh basil, garlic and mozarella pizza Char grilled vegetables, ricotta cheese, garlic, lemon & basil pizza A slice of the spice roasted pumpkin, spinach & caramelised onion pizza . I was very impressed by Sugo’s pizzas. The crust was nice and thin, crisp and everything about it was deicious. Chicken and beetroot salad (with extra cucumbers) Warm chicken an

So it was Grand Final weekend just gone, which probably is the biggest weekend in Melbourne. I was lucky enough to spend it at the Grand Final, so you can imagine the state I was in on Sunday. I didn't want to leave the house but at the same time didn't want to miss out on eating yummy food and that night I had a craving for my favourite pasta down the road at Sugo in Malvern. Thank god for Menulog, which is an online takeaway service http://www.menulog.com.au/ that is growing and has now got a lot of actually good restaurants to order from like Sugo. You don't even need to speak to anyone, just click on what you want, pay with your credit card and sit back on the couch and wait for your meal. What was great also, is they have first time specials for orders at each restaurant so I received 25% off my meal at Sugo - an extra bonus! I placed my order at 6pm and didn't think it would take too long, but I was wrong. There must have been a lot of other people in the same boat, so it

Caught up with the girls over dinner. We wanted something nearby with easy parking and nowhere near the hectic traffic of the CBD. Sugo popped up on urbanspoon and we arranged to meet there. The menu had experienced a change in recent months to make it leaner and clearer. I'd been eager to try the brodo aka dumplings in broth, but unfortunately it didn't make the cut. But luckily for me, the duck risotto had been kept on. We decided to share everything and ordered a warm pumpkin salad, the seafood tortellini, the duck risotto and some bread to mop up the sauces. Check out the spanking clean dishes! We all loved Sugo and agreed that this was an awesome find.

Great food!. We dropped in for a group dinner and had a great night. The menu is deep and full of all the usual Italian suspects. We ordered a range of pastas that were all presented well and more importantly tasted great. The bucatini with salmon was super as was the parpadelle with osso buco. Lasagne was exactly how it should be!!
BYO wine is also a handy benefit with $10 corkage per bottle.
The dessert menu was tempting with around 10 options, but we resisted.
Big fan of the place and will return soon.

Worst service I've ever experienced. If you want to wait 3 hours for your meal come to sugo!
after pre booking 2 large tables well in advance we arrived at sugo at 6.30, service right from the beginning was terrible, restaurant was empty yet the lovely "manager" still managed to completely ignore us everytime we tried to order. 3 hours later after quite a few complaints made by our group as well as other people dining at the restaurant we finally have food! Safe to say I will never ever return to this restaurant again.
Jonmic31
Terrible Service, long wait times. The most terrible service I have ever experienced.
No personality in any of the staff members.
Ordered our food at 7pm, it's currently 9.30pm and we still haven't received it.
Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Kat
The best coffee in the area!. I've never dined here but it must be said that $3.80 for a large cup of coffee/mocha (delicious!) is an absolute BARGAIN, and the best tasting in the Armadale/Malvern area (have sampled extensively). Staff are always friendly and attentive, and now that I'm a regular, I get a bit of extra belgian chocolate on my mocha. Fabulous!

Sugo - Very enjoyable. Whenever Carole and I are in the mood for some great pasta, etc., we always think of Sugo. Our recent visit did not disappoint. The menu on delicious entrees and pasta is extensive and delightful.

I thoroughly enjoyed their Saganaki followed by an excellent Spaghetti Puttanesca, whilst Carole enjoyed the fish of the day which was Blue Eye.

Both courses were served promptly and very efficiently by Chris, who also looked after our beverage needs with a very pleasant Pinot Gris.

Of course, deserts are not left out by any stretch of the imagination and we can thoroughly recommend diners try the Frangelico Icecream and also Italian Meringue. in particular, the Italian Meringue is great!

A word of caution - their Mocca Cuppuccino is very, very addictive - and very, very delicious.

Beverage list is adequate and the wait service, judging from Chris’ performance is excellent- it’s always good to be able to speak to an articulate and competent young person.

The cost is reasonable and not way over the top as it can be in this day and age. Lots of families were there, so it’s good for children as well, in a cheerful Bistro environment.

In summary, a splendid dinner!

Food takes forever to come out and staff not very well trained at all. It took 4 staff members to confirm with me that the spaghetti bolognese that I had started eating indeed had cheese when I had specifically asked for lactose free. Actually the first 2 kept insisting that there was no cheese but then I told them I was allergic and could get sick, then they took it more seriously and in the end didn't even apologise that much! Still had to pay for it even though I couldn't eat it in the end. Terrible

Tasteless slop. This is possibly the worst food I've had in years. Ordered 2 seafood pasta dishes to share with a girlfriend. Will never go back

Never Had a Bad Experience. My partner and I have dined her a few times now and each time we've been, the service has been spot on, the food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is great! I read through some reviews and am actually shocked at some of the comments because the vary so greatly to the experiences we've had here. I'd recommend this restaurant to friends and family, and am going there tonight again. The service is fast and efficient, they are always helpful and attentive. As soon as you finish your drink they offer another one and remove the empty glass, they check in to see how the meal is going, but not over the top and interrupting you multiple times. The food has impressed us every time we go. The starters are great, the bread and dips are fantastic and the mains are amazing.. Not to mention the desserts - which are also incredible. A+ from me.

Terrible customer staff! Rude staff! We went to Sugo's last night for drinks and dessert. We were a table of three heavily pregnant ladies. We were seated at a very uncomfortable wooden bench, with no support. When we asked to move to one of the many available tables, we were told no, that the tables were for dining patrons only. We advised that we were in fact dining and planned on ordering dessert, to which staff replied "too late, you already said you wanted coffees". She then continued to tell us that we were "lucky" to be given a seat at all, because they don't normally take walk-in drink customers before 8.30. She also advised that there are plenty of other cafés on glenferrie road. And that point, we left and had a fabulous meal (yes, dinner and dessert and drinks!) at Georgios restaurant.

Aggressive owner bad service and crap food. Booked a table for Mother's Day was told we had 90 minutes to have our meal...no problem there. Ordered a starter of beet root salad which consisted of half a dozen beets on a saucer..the bread and dips my partner ordered well...nearly chipped a tooth on the bread and the dip tasted like baby food...speaking of babies...80 minutes later no main ..we had our toddler with us who at this stage was getting very tired and narky ..asked 2 Wait staff when the food might be coming to which was told they didn't know as there was a backlog in the kitchen. Long story short our toddler got very upset as one would expect from a child waiting about for nearly an hour & a half as we were from trying to entertain him. Decided to leave as it was just getting too stressful. When my partner asked if he could just pay for the food & drinks we had etc the owner had a little tantrum of his own and got very aggressive ranting about us being unreasonable wanting to leave and how we could wait and take the pizzas home..eh yeah would rather go to Dominoes mate, a lot of grunt & finger in face action followed by 'just pay and get out' I think the fact he didn't get much reaction other than shock roiled him further...anyho sad behaviour from a grown man let alone a business owner. Normally never give bad reviews but due to the bad behaviour of the owner I feel compelled too. Get some anger management classes mate and while your at it perhaps some cooking classes too for the chef

Terrible I visited this pla.... Terrible
I visited this place three years ago and was so disappointed, then returned again hoping it had changed, but it hadn't! They couldn't even remember to put Chicken on my chicken pizza
Avoid this place!

NOW THIS RESTAURANT HAS TO BE THE BEST ITALIAN FOOD EVER.... Try it... you will love it..... upmarket and great food.....
Deb Margitich
Terrible service. Requests were acknowledged but not acted upon and drinks were even banged down on the table without a single word. Not a single person asked how out meal was and when paying the bill the only communication was the bill total muttered. Good was rather average and overpriced for what it was, but the service was terrible. Many times wait staff were content to stand at the bar with hands clasped rather than actually try to wait on diners.

Four of us went on Saturday night. Two of us ordered the fish and salad which were both pretty ordinary. Could have produced the same at home and when I go out I like to have a much better experience. Two had gnocchi and both loved it. We indulged in desserts which were....indulgent!! Service average.
AvidFoodie
Best Gnocchi!. My partner and I come here for the pasta/gnocchi. My favourite is the gnocchi quattro formaggi and he likes the penne amatriciana. Always cooked to perfection and tasty.
Love going to this restaurant, and the staff are always friendly.

My breakfast haunt. One of my regular breakfast haunts, always good consistent coffee, and great eggs
Sarah789
Worst Dining Experince. Terrible experience - staff were extremely rude (particularly the Manager!! ). They got our order wrong and meal was burnt. Will not be going back or recommending to others.
Farah S
The waitress completely screwed up our order. My friend ordered a soda water with lime and bitters, and I asked for just a glass of water. She ended up getting two soda waters with line and bitters, then when I said that we only ordered two, they agreed to remove one from our bill, to which at the end of the meal they still charged us for it! Also when she was taking down our meal orders, she didn't even clarify whether we wanted to entree or main sizes and just assumed we wanted the mains. Customer service totally off!
Check Please
Went today for lunch with a couple of buds. I ordered calamari salad which was fine and fresh. The seafood risotto looked delish if not a bit yellow, the pizza looked fab. Good coffee, so so service.

Not what it was :(. Such a disappointment!
Food was really terrible, ended up eating some pasta off a fellow diners plate! The pasta was okay (but not really hard to mess up). The baked polenta was dry and the proscuitto with cantaloupe was truly inedible.
I used to dine at Sugo frequently years ago and it was great. Would have to say, save you money, it is absolutely not worth it.

No. 1. My go to Italian Restuarant. Food is fresh, full of flavour and never dissapoints! This place can do no wrong by me. Huge fan
Sinfield89
Tried and tested!. My girlfriend and i have been to sugo a number of times and have never been disappointed! Good staff, food and atmosphere, I tend to go for pizza whereas my girlfriend goes for the pasta and we have been equally pleased with both options. Staff are attentive without being evasive which adds to the relaxing atmosphere.

Sugo may not be fine dining or gourmet but if you at after simple tasty Italian food at a good price Sugo is the place to go!
Pheobe
Went here for breakfast with two other friends. The place was not busy (maybe 6 other tables). Took ages to take our orders, people who sat down 10mins after us had there food way before us!!! When we enquired, parts of our order were forgotten. The staff pretended all was fine (we were ready to leave). Didn't offer us coffee whilst we waited and no apologies for forgotten order. We will never go there again!
Susan Scardamaglia
Worst customer service. Been here once and wont be going back, found the staff to be weird, the manager didn't appear to know what she was doing, and my pasta was undercooked.
Not a happy diner, wont be going back
Dave
We visited Sugo for dinner last night. This was the 3rd time we'd dined here. Sugo is a largeish venue with an Italian based menu. We were pretty disappointed with our meals. I had lasagne which seems to have a sugar based sauce that was sickly sweet and excessively salty and bordering on desert like. My wife's fish (Barramundi) was dry, poorly cooked and the salad comprised a few rocket leaves with pine nuts, - no oil etc. For the mid $20's price range, food has been consistently disappointing on each if our visits. We won't be back which is disappointing given the venue has so much potential.

Recommed. Exceptional restaurant, I honestly recommend this place. The food is cooked to perfection and the atmosphere of the place is great. Very enjoyable.
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Not bad.... Service was strange, the staff seemed disorganised on Saturday night.

I only had two coffees. I was saddened to see they use Vittoria which is a cheap coffee and one of my worst. However, both times the coffee was made excellently, which counteracted the cheap taste, that I often experience with Vittoria.

The layout of the restaurant is beautiful, I love the dimly lit atmosphere, and the restaurant looked very clean.

Now I remember.... I had not been to Sugo in over a year and I now remember why. Food takes ages to come out and I feel the pizza and pasta is a little too pricey. I ordered a pasta and while my friend enjoyed hers, I found mine to be bland. I also found a piece of plastic in it. The waitress was apologetic, and I watched her go and inform the owner/manager. I expected him to come over but he just walked off, and no mention of it when we payed for the bill. Care factor, zero.
I see why people enjoy Sugo, my friends enjoyed their meals and the wait staff were pleasant however I personally won't return.
David Choy
Service isn't the fastest but food is consistently good. Well worth it if you aren't in a big hurry.
Drago Samarasinha
Ordered a rissotto. Two words to describe Sugos Rissotto, Never Again!! it looked as if it was drowned in olive oil. The waitress took ages to take our order and there was so much shouting from the chefs which our table was the closest to the cooking area. the music definately was too loud and couldnt hear ourselves. I hope management takes these remarks in consideration for those whose never been there before, as for us improvement needs to be taken.
Tom D
AMAZING! Awesome service, awesome food! Been for breakfast and for dinner. Both were delicious! And by far THE BEST EGSS BENEDICT I'VE EVER HAD!!!

I really enjoyed the food a Sugo.. slightly strange combination of food. Antipasto, Tapas and Italian but all yummy!
For The Love Of Food
Birthday treat. We went out for a birthday lunch we are great believers of supporting local, it had been some time since we had been to sumo and have dined there on a number of occasions. The food in the past has been very good. What went wrong today. I ordered a pizza and my wife the soup. The best part of the meal was the bread that accompanied the soup.

The pizza I had ordered was the prosciutto and artichoke which had a soggy base loaded with spring onion and cubed tomato which had been marinated in balsamic vinegar it was unfortunately a miss on the taste scale. The soup was tinned and if not, was a dopillganger for Heinz minestrone
Jessica
Nom nom nom..... I recently dined at Sugo and was pleasantly surprised. We ate far too much, but all was delicious, especially the linguini with blue swimmer crab! We finished with italian meringue for dessert - perfect! We couldn't fault the food or service. will return for sure.
Frances
I love this place, especially for brunch. The coffee is great and the menu is very extensive. They are even byo now
Christina Panettieri
WTF. I was recently invited to join a group of friends to celebrate a girlfriends pregnancy. My girlfriend suggested Sugo and i checked them out on Urbanspoon. I told my friend there were a number of criticism on Urbanspoon however she said that others had recommended it highly. 8 of us attended, and had a great time. The food was great, service excellent and staff were attentive. The prices were pleasantly comparable or less than most of the restaurants in Collingwood and Carlton where i dine regularly.
This is not the first time that i have read a poor review on Urbanspoon were my personal experience and that of my friends would completely disagree. Which begs the question.... Are restaurants now using Urbanspoon to spruke themselves, and more sadly, are competitive restaurants now using Urbanspoon to undermine there competitors by creating negative reports? We had a great time at Sugo and would happily return if we were to plan another dinner on that side of town.
Claire Bella
Unimpressed. Went here on Valentine's Day this year after a recommendation from a friend.
Was seriously disappointing.
Overpriced, bland food.
My "Atlantic Salmon linguine" was literally a bowl of plain noodles with a few pieces of unseasoned fish on top. No sauce, no spices, nothing.
When the owner took our plates and commented on my full bowl, I was embarrassed, but remarked that it was "actually a bit bland"... to which he had no response.
Just picked it up and walked away.
Not impressed!
Di
Worst food we've had in a long time. Left a bad taste in our mouths. It was as if it had been prepared a week ago and RE-heated.

Ten years ago the food here was amazing which is definitely not the case today. Duck pasta was dry. Risotto balls dry. Salmon salad not fresh. And service very ordinary.

Won't be coming back.
Laura
Bad food. Went to Sugo for Dinner last night. Was recommended by a friend. Really bad food. My husband ordered the Gnocchi with porcini mushrooms.....no porcini mushrooms. We could only see normal mushrooms and the gnocchi were hard like if they were supermarket quality. I was dreaming about eating a good italian pizza.....Disappointed. I choose the quattro stagioni. WHAT A MISTAKE. The sauce tasted as if it went off. The anchovies were so salty...they needed to be washed before using....the rest of the pizza was bad. I advised the staff at the end of my meal. I paid my bill and will never return there again. Need to lift your game.
Jill Coomber
Lunch. First time her with my daughter here ordered two flat breads. My daughter ordered one with ricotta cheese .When it arrived she took one bite and there wads no ricotta in there. After about ten minutes we managed to get the attention of one of the three ( soul not in the job) waitresses. We told her there was no ricotta in there and she took it back to the kitchen. She came back a few minutes later and said the chef had run out of ricotta.!!!!!! Could they put some goats cheese in the flat bread .The flst bread came back ( yes the same one ) the chef had just opened and put in the goats cheese inside .So he had taken a flat bread into the kitchen that had just been eaten. Not very hygenic. When the bill came I thought I had put the right money on the saucer actually it was 30 cents dhort , which the waitress came an asked me for !!!!! Unbelievable
Rebecca R
Come here all the time. Today there was a small bug in my salad didnt realize til the end. Manager was nice about it but now weary to come back
Michelle
Menu looks great, food aint so!. The tapas menu looks awesome on paper and also looks great in front of you however they really failed on the most important part - the taste. We got arancini balls which were very bland, saganaki which was so overcooked I couldn't even cut it with my knife, chicken skewers which were way too dry, undercooked salmon skewers....The char grilled calamari was good and so were the marinated mushrooms. I suggested to my friend we dine there and to be honest I was embarrassed as it was so disappointing. Will not return.
YumYum
Yum. I was impressed with this one, good food and a lack of pretentiousness. Staff were friendly, they were even happy to shuffle us around to a different table, due to a pram that we forgot to tell them about upon booking. The food was really good, there was not a complaint among our table of 10. I would recommend this one and I will go back when I am in the mood for some proper italian.
Hot Mess
Out of this world!. Had the best pumpkin gnocchi! Love the texture - melts in your mouth. My girlfriend had the salmon salad, she was very impressed with the serving and all she said was...YUMMM. Can't wait to go back and try their home-made ricotta gnocchi next!
Food Junkie
The linguini with blue swimmer crab was awesome! My partner had the meat lasagna and he loved it. There was so much sauce he got some bread to go with it! Good wholesome meal. We'll be back for more!
Brett H
No different from Giorgios up the road, ordinary menu, ordinary food, all much more expensive than it is worth. On the plus side the waitresses were attentive and efficient.
SweetCheeks
Oh, what a shame! I dined here with my husband lastnight, as we have been there a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The pumpkin and spinach cannelloni was without the "Parmesan crust" as it was described on the menu - in fact, it was the sloppiest meal we had seen in a long time, in a bowl of watery, tasteless sauce. When our waitress asked how we enjoyed our meals, my husband gave his honest feedback (we are not usually the complaining types!) and she advised she would pass it on to the chef... whether she did or not we have no idea, as it was the last we heard of it. My salmon bucatini was quite nice though. We then ordered dessert. My $15 Frangelico and nut sundae was nice but could easily have been generic supermarket ice cream. My husband ordered the apple crumble... a crumble generally has a slight crunch to it, does it not? Well, not when it's microwaved. The topping of the dessert resembled cooked porridge. The base was as soft as the apple within. We suspect there is a less experienced chef who works the kitchen mid week. Overall, a very disappointing dinner and it is unlikely we will return anytime soon.

Nice Pasta. I've been going to Sugo off and on for years, unfortunately more off of late. The pasta is lovely (try the Linguine al Sugo or pumpkin cannelloni) and the ciabatta break with oil and vinegar tasty. It's not as good as it used to be (this may sound strange, but there used to be a level of 'love' for the place from the wait and kitchen staff), now it's a bit more business like, but then again, the space they used has doubled and it's always busy so that's not surprising. They can take a bit of time here, however if you let them know when you sit down that you need to be out within the hour, they have always been able to accommodate this.

The wine list is good and fairly priced. Definitely something different to your usual pizza/pasta place which is a good thing. Recommended!

Middling fare at Malvern prices. Reasonable Italian fare, augmented by tapas and other offerings, service that I find a little patchy and unremarkable, but fully marked up to price levels - for both food and wine - that leave a sour taste. Yes it is Malvern, but within a short drive there are many alternatives (in even leafier suburbs) that offer better value for money.
ARAS ENNA REZARF
Service is bad. I had a meeting here today with someone. Being early i ordered a coffee. the staff made me feel really uncomfortable while ordering and the seed quite sour. That was until the person i as meeting came in, suddenly they were nice to us did i mention that the person i met had an account with them?

They really need to be friendlier to new customers. The coffee was ok.
Julie
Soup nazi culture. I used to be a regular at sugo but their biggest fault is their poor attituide. First of all booking a table is a real negotiation - set ttimes, unbending. Second, getting a table that suits or just what appears suitable for the occasion. We have been asked to move tables even after receiving our order and you must fit into their time slots to even get a booking. And they are not that busy. I think the person at the top is a control freak but more likely just collects the $ and does not care for his customers or that customers become ex-customers because of the soup nazi attituide of staff. Love the tapas concept but won't go back because of the bossy attiruide.
Dino
I was disappointed. Food was very average for the price charged. Service was not the best.
Jason Smith
GREAT. Love the food, great service, nice atmosphere definitely going back love the spaghetti prawns

This place has gone down hill used to be really good !!!

Absolute Rip Off. This place is food hall quality food but with 5 star prices!! $120 for 2 glasses of wine, green salad with olives, bruschetta, risotto and very basic penne with chopped tomato (i could have made that at home)and way too much chilli, tap water, and one tiramasu(that was to take home).

The young waitress was particularly rude. No sooner had we got our bruschetta to share, but our mains arrived. I ordered my 2nd glass of wine and that finally arrived well after my main and when we were ready to leave.

On the table next to us, there were 3 people. 2 of them received their main meal, whilst the 3rd person waited for 15 mins, only to be told his meal will still be 25 mins away because the restaurant was "fully booked". Our sittings were at 6.30pm and they were hardly full.

Never again! Over priced, ordinary and rude.

Thumbs down for the wheat-intolerant. My friends love Sugo! I can see why, IF you love pizza and pasta, I can eat neither of those things due to my wheat intolerance. The menu is very limited at specific times, and you can only order flat bread or things in the window and once you can order everything pickings are still slim for a non wheat eater, which in 2012 Melbourne is VERY common. The duck risotto is bland, the salmon salad has over cooked salmon with lack luster grilled vegetables, and the tapas also disappoint. So I give up Sugo, I don't like you, I tried but I can't forgive your many indiscretions. It's always full though with people munching away at their pizzas, my friends being some of them, so I must just be bitter I can't eat pizza...or maybe Sugos needs to expand its repertoire.
Hungry
Ciabatta Ciabatta Ciabatta!!!. I have been to Sugo a few times now, always quick to bring the varieties of bread for the table, the staff are a very young, fresh faced bunch! I got the meatballs which was about $24, the portion was substantial, especially after being filled up on warm ciabatta with balsamic and oil! Another great component to Sugo is the interior, the low lit restaurant always has the right temperature. I know this may be a strange thing to comment on, but I find nothing worse than being too hot or cold out to dinner!
Coffe With Friends
Good pasta best to share. Took a while to find my friend who had booked as i must have said the wrong name and they seated me in an awful dark little annexe off the main room. (was suspicious as had read it happened to another reviewer here) The main room was pleasant however. Salmon kebab was tasty, mixed pasta platter was huge carbonara was delicious easily fed 2 and reasonably priced. Individual pastas were too expensive. Desert was well presented and two of us didnt finish it.
Dwayne
Food quality low and serving size was small, this restaurant owner needs to visit Italy.......
Fusspot
Food and coffee ok. I went here recently for lunch and ordered the calamari/squid pasta. From memory it was $26 which is ok, although a tad overpriced- maybe it is consistent with comparable meals in the area. I have to say I was impressed with the quantity of calamari/squid however the pasta serving wasnt big and a bit watery. The coffee was good however your typical cafe fare, nothing to rave on about. It was a really nice sunny day and I prefer more lightfilled places. I would probably recommend this place for dinner maybe.
Foodlover12
Great menu with so much to choose from, tasty, always good food! The tapas is great with raps of variety.
Old Gregg
Well worth the effort. I'm really into sampling a lot of smaller items and the ability to order a number of smaller tapas items for the one plate here is ideal.
Reasonably priced and relaxed. Can be a little noisy.
Definitely will become a regular for lunch.
The Hon. Rev. Pudmeister Esq.
Overall a good place, it's busy they managed to be courteous, efficient priced ok, food good. Consistent digs, no problems recommending. Sugo is a Gogo!!!!!
Charlotte McCann
Nice. Good food, the chicken salads tasty. Be warned though, the lasagnes are always ridiculously hot, my sister has burnt herself on several occasions but never learns.
Jacob Stephen
Had a romantic dinner on a wednesday night. Consumer please ignore the percentage as I'd give the place 90%. We had the linguine el sugo chicken and charcoal chicken pizza which were perfect. We would revisit.
Sarah11
Very disappointed with breakfast at Sugo today. Terrible service- even though we were only the second group, food came out cold (do they microwave the bacon and mushrooms? If they were cooked fresh they must have been Sitting for ten minutes before they were served). I had to ask for my food to be microwaved. Bland food, poached eggs served watery. Hollandaise sauce out of a can. Definitely not kid friendly- they don't have a high chair. I think we intentionally got bad service ....we were ignored, not given water like other patrons and not offered newspapers (others were). A $12.50 pancake (yes, single small pancake) was cold, with a table spoon of cold packet berries on top. Not impressed, terrible service and Terrible meal costing $50.
Martini_love
Although the service was ok, my food wasn't great. I had a pizza with prosciutto, mushrooms, artichokes and rocket. It was not cooked properly and to my disappointment, the ingredients were on either side of the pizza, with one piece of prosciutto on top. Maybe next time they can put the ingredients all over the pizza.
Aaron S
A friendly and warm establishment. Great breakfast menu with plenty of vegetarian options. Breakfast is priced as you'd expect ($10-18) and the servings are more than generous. Lunch and dinner menu gets fairly expensive, we had a $120 bill for two that was only an entree, a plate of antipasto, one pasta, and a few beers. Very nice atmosphere inside, with friendly staff.
Amanda K
The love grows. Pasta dishes arent your typical australian italian choices and thats what i love about this place. Service is always great, the manager is very helpful and considerate also. I've had the goats cheese ravioli and wasnt too impressed with the portion size of around 12 parcels the first time i came here but since ive had no issues with the other dishes. There were a group of loud squeeling teens that ruined the mood on the saturday night since the place is pretty small. Id head here during the week more. Reasonably prices considering the area also.
Luke
Tasty,Consistent,Affordable=Likes it!!! We like to come here when over this way for a nice lunch or tasty dinner which won't break the bank. Can be a bit on the noisy side when busy, and does get alot of families in with the kiddies. Really nice pizzas and pastas. Love a good Meat ball Pizza. Nice wine list too. Been here many times-and always good experience.
Craig Rowley
Should Go Learn Service. The food here is good, with plentiful portions. The rooms get very noisy and that warrants investment in acoustics to achieve a more anechoic situation. However, most urgently needed is extensive training in service for the staff. They're presumptuous and pushy.
Jessica Dickson
Amazing - Saffron risotto was incredible!! However wasnt a huge fan of the Momo wine.
Alex
Breakfast menu. Awesome to see a new breakfast menu at Sugo! Lots of new dishes, updates to the existing favorites and fortunately holding onto a couple of the signatures. Great to see the addition of new sourdough bread and banana and pistachio bread in place if the run if the mill ciabatta. Went for breakfast this morning, and was delighted to get the same great service and fabulous coffee as always.
Tsk Tsk
Thumbs up. Great for a quick lunch or dinner. Very efficient service.

Unsatisfied. Hi I would like to write a honest and constructive review on Sugo. There were 8 of us who came here for fathers Day, we ordered 3 pizza's and pasta dishes. we were very dissapointed of the quality of the food in relation to the pricing to these dishes the seriving sizes were on the small size. Some of us order the seaford pasta dishes which only had 1 prawn and was subsitituated for bay prawns which looked like it was from a can. The quality of the food was not the standard that the website describes the pasta was not fresh it was low quality and most important the pasta dishes which inlcuded ravioli fettucine with there selected sauces had no real taste. Being italian and into my food this was not a place that I would recomend you are better going to Fazios in Hampton cafe Cucina and il Bacaro given that Fazios you will pay about the same but the quality A1 and for a little more the other two resturants.
Neil Schmoll
Best pasta in Malvern. Yes it's noisy (but that's because it is popular). Always enjoy dinner there and you can't go wrong with any of the pastas. The addition of byo would be a nice addition as wine not cheap.
Lea
Booking a table in itself was difficult they wanted us in and out in an hour and a half. Last time I looked it wasn't a fast food restaurant!!!!! Not giving it any more goes I won't go back.
Lisa
Lackluster. Hi there, I've been going to Sugo for over a decade and my most recent experience was extremely disappointing. My friend and I arrived on time but separately and were seated at different tables until I sent her a text 1/2 hr later to find out where she was! The waiter thought that was funny. We received a $12 glass of wine that was off. The waiter tripped over my bag and shoved it in my face as though it was my fault. We tried to get attention to order desert and got the bill instead! Awful, awful, awful! Worst restaurant experience ever. We won't be back!
Mark Greeff
Great food and the Salmon was amazing!

Good local family cafe. Great atmosphere, extensive menu, plenty of space. Some of the service leaves something to be desired.
Nicola Byrne-wiid
This is fantastic, great ambience good service awesome food, will be back 4 sure
Daniel
Had the saffron risotto with meatballs, it was amazing worth every dollar!
Samantha
Coffee is perfect, to bad about the service, dusty shelves and smelly & dirty water glasses!
Ari
Made a late phonecall and got a table for 8pm. Restaurant was full and buzzing. We were seated quickly and drinks served promptly. The char grilled calamari was spectacular and the mains fresh and hot. Overall a plesant expeirience which I highly recommend.
Naify
Used to be a big fan until recently.the same dishes we used to order all last year have done a u-turn and were so dissapointing that we won't be going back. The pizza used to be good as did the atlantic salmon warm salad-it was dry, fishy and a waste of $$$.the restaurant is noisy and not relaxing
SFR
I really like Sugo. It's one of my favourite casual restaurants. The pumpkin soup is out of this world!

Fantastic gnhoccies

Yum! Great variety on the menu...choosing was tough!

Love the food here and the service is superb. Gnocchi with gorgonzola and bacon is to die for!

Downhill slide. Used to go there regularly - once it was sold to the new owner, menu is the same as in the past and the quality has gone downhill each time we have been back with friends.
Some of the service staff are really slack . . we waited for ages (over 30mins) for a coffee and there were only 5 people in the place!
Convenient location and good parking . . . very NOISY

Massive menu, something for everyone. Good place for group lunch.

Worst breakfast ever

Mmmmm..... Flourless chocolate & hazelnut cake with espresso ice cream - to die for.

Great gourmet pizzas and easy parking opposite at malvern central shopping centre make this a convenient weekend lunch stop with the kids

Best Italian I've been to for ages. It wins hands-down compared to Lygon St Italian restaurants I've been to (around 8-10 of them).
I am a repeat customer and you will be too after visiting this place...it's that good, seriously.
David Vickers
Go to Sugo for spaghetti & meatballs or pizza or risotto. The simple things are done really well. It's unpretentious and casual... a good local nosherie.

Some friends of mine just came back from a trip around Europe. During dinner with the group, Mr Sakata* was telling us how much he loved Paris, describing how scrumptious the buttery filled food was and how he has now learnt to appreciate simple staples l
