Review Millstone - Malvern

Let’s Eat Food!
This cafe has some great service and energy to it, not too overbearing where you feel the need to make conversation but attentive and welcoming. The coffee was tasty and they have a nice collection of sweets and salads to pair. The food has enough character to stand out from other cafe’s around as well. When we went the cafe was quite busy and we still received our meals quickly.

You can't go wrong. Great place. Have been coming to Millstone for few years now. Fresh and delicious. Oh... you have to try their pastries.

I’m so glad a friend recommended this place for us to catch up at on a rainy Friday. We scored a table for two inside, checked in and found it hard to hard as everything looked delicious. My friend had the black porridge which was in the menu. It was delicious, soul warming and a great portion. I ordered a chicken baguette what was behind the counter. It was a great size and so good with my two coffees. We couldn’t resist one of the cakes that we couldn’t stop staring at during lunch. We shared the lemon drizzle cake. It was so good. I took home a slice of the blueberry cheesecake for my kids they loved it!

The best place to go for your dessert treat if you are around Malvern area. Highly recommended for anyone who has a sweet tooth. Hot chocolate is absolutely amazing. Had a few cake slices and a cinnamon bun, all of them are beautiful. Would definitely come back for a brunch or dinner next time. Highly recommended their orange almond cake (the first picture). Side notes: there might be a queue during peak time.Estimated waiting time for more than 3 people - 15~20 minutes.

Fresh cakes and pastries, good quality coffee and consistent service. Love this place and one of the best places next to the train station.

Cute little cafe, the cakes are nice and the fritters are highly recommended!

I ordered the Lemon Tart after trying this at a work function. It was divine! The presentation was amazing. The lovely team at Millstone also made an effort to have this ready for me by 8am too. I also tried the carrot cake and it was delicious. Millstone is amazing!

Millstone provided catering for an event I helped organise (hens) and it was so delicious and looked very presentable! Can’t wait to use Millstone for catering again in the future. We have also been there for brunch which was great, good vibes, food and coffee is great. 10/10 recommend.

Finally made the trip in to experience Millstone today, beautiful staff! Great food and desert to die for!!! Definitely worth the over an hour trip to get there and battling the M1

Intersting experience. I ordered a beautiful cake for a 50th birthday surprise. Ordered online and called on the day of collection to be treated by busy staff who kept cutting me off and passing me from one person to another. Kind of stressful at this stage worrying I won't have a birthday cake after all. At no stage was I able to finish my sentence. Instead of collection at 3.00 was advised the store would close at 11.00. It was not appreciated that I was surprised that no one informed me of the change of collection time. I do wonder what would have happened if I had turned up at 3.00? I arrived stressed to collect the cake and asked to have a look at it and was told to "calm down" and don't treat us "like dogs". Wow, nice customer experience after spending $160.00 in their establishment. I then had to listen to their side of the story - with a guest visit from the baker who popped outside to say to me that she hoped I would never come back :) - no courtesy to their customer to hear my side first - to then be able to explain why I found being cut off, brushed off and uninformed stressful when I am trying to organise a 50th birthday - to finally to be told fair enough - we understand your point of view. I am sure the cake will be wonderful... the problem is in Melbourne we have so much choice that I would not recommend the company at this stage for online orders that are important to you that you really don't want to take a risk on. Pop by for a cake and coffee is OK if it's disappointing but better than messing up on an order for a 50th birthday cake. I hope with maturity and more experience this local shop can find a way to really step up and professionally handle their customers in future.

We had a wonderful experience at Millstone undertaking the introduction to pastry cooking class. Alice led an interactive, engaging, hands on class supported by her lovely colleagues. To say we learnt a lot is an understatement! Thank you all for a great night!
Mel Oliver
Sensational food, wonderful staff, very accommodating. Pastries are works of art and I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel of the breakfast salad. The only reason not to recommend this place is so it doesn't become even more popular and make it even more difficult to get a table!!!! Love it, thankyou

This place is divine!! I have brunch here regularly and it never disappoints!! Yesterday I had the Vanilla Hotcakes. They were just delightful!!! Service is always excellent too!! 💜
Kate Phillips
We ordered two takeaway salads, which ended up being very small, tasteless and they charged me $25!! My first time visiting this cafe, very disappointed as I had heard good things. I didn’t dine in, use your water, cutlery, waiter service I only ordered two salads to eat elsewhere.

What a treat! Friendly, helpful service, delicious food & drink, it made going to work during the holidays so more pleasurable.
Chris Feil
Great coffee shop serving excellent coffee and food. It's also close to Cabrini and in a quieter area near Malvern station which suits people like me perfectly.
Sonia Madafferi
Didn't even get to eat as they seemed more concerned with trying to cram every person that walked past in & forgot about us! We left after 50mins of waiting for our food. Way too long a wait for some breakfast ☹️
Andrew Paterson
I go there every morning, nice people great coffee cakes and pastries. Breakfast on a weekend is excellent but get in early as its a very popular place. Its biggest challenge is space. Highly recommend.
Daniel Bertucci
This place was so #lit. Like the coffee was #lit and the cake cabinet looked so #lit.
Nick Capper
Great place. Great Food. Great coffee. Was that someone from Masterchef I saw preparing the food ????

Friendly staffs and tasty food, one of my favorite weekend places now ☺️ The cakes are amazing

Super busy even during COVID-19. We just ordered coffees and left. The cakes were flying out the door. Heard the croissants are very good here.

Had a mixed experience here.<br/>Good place if you’re craving something sweet. <br/>The cakes here (I tried the carrot cake and orange almond cake) are very delicious. Cream and icing on both cakes were not overly sweet. The cakes itself was not too dense, especially the carrot cake which was my personal favorite among the two. The cakes were light and cake to cream/icing ratio was perfect.<br/>Coffee here is good, made and served promptly.<br/>Service here was what disappointed me. First, I was ignored and left standing at the door for 10 mins. Then I was left on the table with no table water or menu for another 5 mins before I had to make eye contact with the waitress to serve me. <br/>The waitress (short haired) looked annoyed and uninterested to serve me. It made me very uncomfortable.<br/>Thankfully the experience was saved by good cakes and a much friendlier waitress (curly hazel haired) who recommended me to try the carrot cake and was much more enthusiastic than the previous waitress.<br/>Do pay them a visit if you have a sweet tooth but be wary of the service.

Bustling little cafe off the main drag. Really busy the day I went. But you can reserve ahead if you wish. Would recommend for groups of 4 or more. Delicious menu & super friendly and helpful staff make for a great experience. If only o had enough room for the sweet pastries. Happy grazing.
Billy Lee
The food was really good, we ordered the burger, the charcoal croissant benedict and the smashed avocado. They all taste really good. I love the brioche and the shop made patty was really delicious and juicy. They also have a range of pastries and cakes to offer. However, the wait time was a bit too long but they managed the feedback well enough.
Dekaffeinated
Great place. Great selection of pastries and cakes! Tried the Tiramisu and Apple tart, both are delicious! Cozy small little corner cafe, highly recommended!
Jess J
Tragic attempt at gourmet food. Tasteless and pricey. All 4 companions agreed. This cafe is not on par with the reviews we relied on when basing our decision to attend.
JeannetN
Walked into a crowded little shop. Was a bit afraid we wouldn't get a seat for a while, but the polite and friendly staff came up and service was quick and efficient. We were fit into a bar stool spot first and then were transferred to a table when one freed up. Coffees are delicious, food fresh, well cooked and unique. Chocolatine crossaint was lovely, crispy on the outside and layered deliciousness inside with a rich chocolate. Couldn't stop ourselves from ordering treats to go. We will definitely be back.
Christopher Sanchez
Pretty bad service. Went across the road to get coffee. At least I didn't have to wait 15 minutes only to be ignored for a simple order of coffee.
Jen Reynolds
Food is average. Waited in line for over 30minutes to be seated and then a further wait  for some plastic textured funny salmon with tastless greens carelessly placed. Our coffee orders were mixed up and noticed them being collected from another table. Waited in line again to pay. Wont be back.

Great, friendly service in a little corner of Malvern. Waited at least 30 mins on a busy Sat, but once a table was available staff were very prompt in their attentiveness. Ordered the potato hash waffles. Lovely presentation. Loved the addition of watercress on the dish. Wonderful. I did honestly find the waffle too oily which was disappointing and brought their score down. The wait to pay was also too time consuming granted they did seem to have eftpos issues on this particular day.
Munchin
Lovely friendly service in a convenient location. There was adequate seating inside and out. I had the potato hash waffle which was nice. Unfortunately the salmon tasted like it came out of a packet from the cold section in the supermarket.

What a fantastic little hideaway. With several others more visible, this needs to be sought out, however it’s worth the journey. Lots of variety on the menu and many added sweet extras on display when you walk in. Staff are eager to help and discuss a variety of dining options when with a larger group. Coffee is great. Food is fresh and the party I was with all left very satisfied.

Hidden in a small quiet street, this place is always busy. Coffee is fantastic, service is very friendly and prompt. Cakes are amazing. I got strawberry pavlova. The cream inside was divine. So indulging and perfect sweetness!
Miriam Faine
Can’t thank the staff enough - I finally got both over 90 year olds out of the house by 3.30 and when we got to the cafe the staff were already packing up. They very kindly gave us table service and let us sit and enjoy our coffee and cake. Much appreciated.
Thought For Food
My husband and I had brunch here last week. Friendly staff and a nice set out. Unfortunately I found it rather pricey considering the size of the portions and the food took over half an hour to come out (it wasn't busy). Also, the falafel dish I had was rather bland and needed more seasoning. Might give it another shot with a different dish next time.

I wanted to give more because I know this place can do better. <br/><br/>I do love that Millstone is out of the way off the hectic Glenferrie Rd traffic. Easy parking right outside. Just next door to Malvern station. <br/><br/>The waffles photo drew me in and my partner ordered the broccoli & Parmesan fritters. Both looked great but there wasn’t the wow that came with how it looked. I was sort of let down. My waffles came with banana, blueberries, butterscotch sauce and ricotta. Anyway it looked great but a very small serving of sauce meant it wasn’t moist enough, even though the waffles were lovely and soft and not dry. Did ask for another lot of sauce which helped. Grabbed some bacon from my partners plate and that complimented nicely. <br/><br/>Her food was ok but again nothing mouthwateringly wanting for more. Servings are large, which is great for the eye but we can never finish everything even if it was wow. We often share one meal but as I felt like sweet and she savory we went separate. <br/><br/>Coffees were also so so. Lovely cups but again no excitement. <br/><br/>Staff, all French or French speaking, we’re lovely. It could be excused it’s the silly season and therefore things were a little lackluster but at $52 we were a little disappointed.
Debby Palti
Lovely cafe with a very French take on breakfast and brunch. Their cake selection is wow especially their take on a wagon wheel. They do cater for vegetarians and vegans but the range is not much however what they do have is really tasty. Service is great and the ambience is friendly and welcoming. Be aware that they do get very busy. Well worth it though.
@lukebMelb
Stopped by today for a quick lunch and absolutely loved it. I ordered the broccoli and parmesan corn fritters which were very nice. The coffee is very good and the service is friendly and attentive. Look forward to returning!

I’m a 2 year regular and will continue to be one! The coffee is consistently good, the food menu always changes with great options and the cakes are always always amazing! You can just tell the amount of care and love the owners and waiters have for this place.
Sweetoothbrunches
This place is the perfect spot to grab a quick meal on the way to malvern station. However, due to it's small interior it can be quite busy. I chose to have a coffe and their famous cake from the counter.
WhenFoodMeetsFiona
Ordered:<br/>- Classic corn fritters <br/>- Jamon and leek croquettes <br/><br/>Despite the waiter forgetting our meal, my cousin and I had an amazing meal. I had the corn fritters and I could not say a single bad thing about the dish. Everything tasted delish when combined; the bacon was soooo crispy but not too oily which was great!<br/>I tried my cousins croquette with the prosciutto and it blew my mind away!!! <br/>Would recommend and come back :)))
Linda
Sooo good! A collection of great classic homemade baked goods and a tandalizing selection of more creative options too. Good menu and coffee. Seating is very limited so be prepared to wait or sit outside. Great and friendly service<br/>to top it all off. Will be back!<br/>
Small And Tall Eats
Millstone is a great patisserie and cafe in Malvern. <br/>The food is tasty but you really come for the cakes, slices and decadent desserts. We came for breakfast on a Saturday morning and only waited 10 minutes for a table. We opted for 3 very different breakfast dishes but each was delicious in its own right. <br/><br/>The highlight of this place however was the glass cabinet full of sweet treats inside. One of my favourites is the lemon cake toped with delicious lemon curd.
Fatcat
We came here for Sunday lunch and told there was a 45min wait, but were given a table after 25mins. I think the food is well worth the wait, but plan ahead if you’re thinking of going on a weekend. We got there half an hour early because I had a suspicion this would happen.<br/><br/>I had the “all the veg”: corn fritters with broccolini which was delicious. We also ordered the lemon syrup cake (unbelievably rich in lemon flavour), the “egg” (a white chocolate coated “egg” of coconut and passion fruit) and a cream brûlée lemon tart. The cakes are really as good as they look - if you are a dessert/cake enthusiast you can’t miss this one.

I live locally, thus tried out most places around the area, but I find that everytime I go here, I end up leaving and going to Cafe Claremont instead. A 15 min wait for a coffee? Really? And no one has bothered to take my order within that time frame. I mean the staff are really nice (when they’re around). But with heaps of options around and if you’re a busy person like I am, just get takeaway coz this place isn’t probably for you.
Sarah
I loved everything about this cafe! Cute setup, great food and French staff; so you know it’s authentic. Even the coffee was great! I had All the Veg dish and enjoyed how different it was to similar brekky dishes. I’ll be back!

On a busy Sunday morning nothing beats being able to book a table for brunch! Not many cafes do but the lovely Millstone allows you to via : Zomato app 👏😍<br/>Walking straight in we observed quiet a number of hungry patrons waiting outside, lucky us! <br/>Being greeted by friendly, smiling French waitstaff was the next bonus for choosing Millstone. The menu is not too complicated but covers all bases from light eater to something quiet filling eg burger 🍔 w fries. <br/>All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our choices and our coeliac Lovely appreciated the effort that was made to not cross contaminate. A great choice and would recommend highly. There are also amazing pastries/cakes , salads etc on display to purchase 😍👏.

Came here for Sunday lunch. The cauliflower and corn fritters were nice! Crunchy on the outside but the cauliflower made it soft on the inside. Coffee was great too.
Tifany_la_gourmande
What a cute café! I really enjoyed my visit to millstone. It has a wide selection of foods, from healthy salads to gourmet burgers. We had the fritters and the green omelette! Staff is very friendly and the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend it! 👌🏻

Very polite and friendly waitress. <br/>Coffee was really good <br/>Food was delicious <br/>The cabinet of sweet treats looked amazing. <br/>Nice little spot for breakfast <br/>

I had an issue with the hygiene standards kept at the cafe. Management eventually acknowledged the issue which was appreciated.<br/><br/>Hoping to return there soon to see the issue rectified and to edit my review and rating with a delicious breakfast.

Had brunch with family. The food was well presented and tasted good. The drinks were good. One family member required assistance due to a medical condition, unrelated to the food, and staff were very attentive, caring and helpful. <br/>

Finally tried Millstone for brunch/lunch and I was really looking forward to it. It was this past Friday, so maybe not as busy as they'd be on a weekend, but even though they weren't completely full, service was exceptionally slow from the get go. We walked in and were semi greeted by staff rushing by to either deliver food to tables, or to do nothing. Though some staff were just overseeing things, they left us waiting inside the door for almost two minutes. Eventually when we could catch someone's eye, they seated us and handed us the menu. In my opinion, I found a lot of the service to be a bit pretentious and they favour looking after their regular customers and didn't treat us with quite the same "love."<br/><br/>I ordered the eggs on toast with salmon and avocado and it was nice. It wasn't spectacular, but then again to me, it was the most appealing item on the menu. I found their menu is almost the same as any other cafe in Melbourne, and it gets boring after a while. The food itself was nice - though the toast was very dry - and the presentation was good, but not too exciting.<br/><br/>What I was really wanting to try, was one of their incredible looking delicacies; beautifully presented desserts that are just mouth watering. However ... the service was SO slow, that it was almost 20 minutes since we'd finished eating our lunch, until they cleared our plates away. By now, we were going to be pushing it to get to our next stop on time, so we had to ask for the cheque. <br/><br/>For ME, I find that doesn't matter how nice the food is; if your service lets you down, I probably won't visit again for a long time. I DO want to try one of their desserts, so I might make the effort to return at another time hopefully soon, but for a place with a menu that replicates anything you'd find anywhere else, and that has incredibly difficult parking, I wouldn't otherwise rush back here again.
Havva
Great place for brunch, coffee or something sweet. Staff are great, food even better and the pastries are irresistible! Definitely coming back to try more on the menu!
Mysy
Always love a breakfast place that has items on the menu that would take me ages to make at home... creativity is so important to awaken our senses especially in the morning! #hiddengem #malvernneighbourhood <br/>

Looking at the pantry with full of desserts is already mouth watering. Friendly French staff and very good coffee. The only downside is the outside seating is kind of on the slope, not quite comfortable.
Jillian
Millstone patisserie is nestled within the peaceful side of Malvern even though it is not far from the Main Street. There is plenty of on street parking around the area which is lovely to walk around. <br/>I have been here twice and both experience were lovely. <br/>The menu is not extensive but they do it well. I ordered the pumpkin salad with lamb shoulder the other day and even my husband who doesn’t like salad enjoyed it. Forgive me, but it is so good that I am going to attempt to make a similar dish at home. My husband ordered the benedict which was delicious too. <br/>The best part definitely was their sweets. I personally think that the blood orange cheese cake was worth killing for but my husband found it too sour for his liking. We ordered the apple, olive oil and maple syrup too which is moist and homely. <br/>Definitely coming back for more!
Who Loves Good Food
Millstone has a very green menu, not really for the carnivores. Despite this, we enjoyed the Nutella French Toast, Cauliflower & Corn Fritters, and the Green Eggs & Ham Benedict. Immaculate food (and drinks) presentation. Great flavors.

"Brunch bowl"<br/>Lovely fresh ingredients that tasted amazing. Felt a bit disjointed would have been nice for it to be mixed together. Also some ingredients were sparse. The service was very poor with it taking nearly 30 minutes just to get served. There was a nice atmosphere.

Such a cute cafe, everything in this cafe works; from the moment you walk in to the time you leave. I went twice in one weekend because I liked this cafe so much. Leave some space for one of their delicious cakes, which is well above your average cafe.
Melbcafegirl
Omg I loved this place. Stumbled across this cafe unintentionally but loved the look of it so I had to come in! Coffee was hot and delicious! I had the dr Marty's crumpets which was so tasty. Most of all I loved the decor! Will definitely be back!

Fantastic hot chocolate and delicious marshmallows. Great food and lively vibe with friendly service. Always worth the wait to get a table..

Amazing breakfast menu not to mention pasterries, wow! So happy to have discovered this little gem. Service was great along with presentation of food. A must go to! Yum!
Jake Reeve
Amazing food and coffee. A little expensive but delicious. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Always full of people! Nice selection of sweets.

The pork belly is a must! YUM!! Cute little cafe. Really friendly attentive staff. The desserts we ordered tasted as good as they looked. Will be back to taste their other treats!
Joanna Shaddai
Tried their spiced cauliflower salad and dayum, I was mind blown! Best salad I've ever tried! All the spices were on point! <br/><br/>Will definitely come back soon!

Great food and friendly service. I took some cakes home and they were amazing. Highly recommend this place for breakfast. I will definitely be back.
Olivia Oh
Spectacular looking cakes. Was impressed with the decoration and level of detail. Gives the wow factor. They're snickers little cake is great too

Absolutely gorgeous little cafe with cakes that are to die for! Tried the "golden gaytime" which was just divine. The staff were lovely and very friendly. The salads looked incredibly fresh and there was so many to choose from! Will definitely be returning to try the breakfast and lunch menus!

Good location to have lunch. Food was nice and cakes were good... but i think it's too pricy for the quality ... $84 for a brunch and two cakes for 2... had a good time anyway and the staff was nice

Charming French cafe in Malvern! Super close to malvern train station. Delicious food! Lovely, attentive staff and the place just looks really nice.<br/>I had the breakfast roll, yummo! Also the mille feille dessert. So nice :)<br/>Great place if i wanna go somewhere for a nice brunch!

We ventured down to Malvern on a public holiday where just the front window was open for pastries and coffee. We came home to enjoy our selection of bacon and egg muffins, custard cronuts and nectarine danishes and it was all beautiful. Nothing too sweet or salty and everything well made. The coffee was pretty good too. Friendly service with a smile was icing on the top! We will be returning!

I think I may have found my local cafe hang out. <br/>Coffee is Niccolo. Nice roast smooth texture.<br/>Has a pastry section, with amazingly good looking selection of sweets. Didn't try it but damn if I don't next time.<br/>Greeted at the door by a wonderful member of staff. <br/>Ordered the special of the day Fritters. Passable. <br/><br/>Will be back. Check them out if you're in the area.

Thanks to a Le Cordon Bleu student aka my sister, we are introduced to the very best of French pastry in Melbourne. We sampled the gingerbread, lsaphan(lychee) and everyones' favorite Valentine Day. Each dessert cost about $10-13, but it's well worth the price based on the amount of detail and work that goes into them. Coffee was nothing to write home to but the tarts were delightful, it's pastry prepared with the highest precision and passion.

(Saturday 12/2/2017 & Monday 20/2/2017)<br/><br/>Came here for a try because my partner wanted to try their pastry.<br/><br/>Ordered a Soft Shell Crab Burger from the days special. It was alright.<br/>The sauce overpowers the taste of the crab meat and was a bit dry.<br/>Chips were better and super crispy (double fry, perhaps?)<br/> <br/>Didn’t really enjoy the coffee. Temperature was warm, not hot. It had a weak acidity. Matcha Latte was blend and the texture was a bit off.<br/> <br/>Despite that, the desserts were the highlight of our visit. We even came twice for the other desserts with friends. We ordered most of the entremets and really really really enjoyed it. My favourite was the gingerbread flabour. All were soft, smooth and light.<br/> <br/>P.s: be sure to be there early, they go out very fast.
Sam
Tried this little cafe yesterday after looking at the delicious cakes and pastries but sadly was very disappointed. There was only one waiter running around trying to serve everyone he was clearly needing help. I ordered a scone with jam and cream and 2 coffees, the scone came out promptly but we waited a further 20min for the coffees. Had to repeatedly ask when they were coming and finally had to ask they come in take away cups as we had to go. Barista assured me she put the required sugars in when I asked but got to the car and no sugar and coffee bitter and not a nice taste. Overall not a good experience and will go for the quieter one behind this cafe opposite the station which looked really cool too.

The WORST coffee ever. Totally undrinkable. I drink coffee at AXIL everyday before work and their coffee is unbelievable- the BEST. Snobbery never pays!
Love It Or Like It
Delicious breakfast , a great scrambled egg , crispy bacon- perfect .Had brandy snap with grapefruit curd and strawberries- OMG to die for ! It was very busy there with a lovely energy .Service great , felt like a visit to France ! Great work Millstone . Can't wait to brunch again .

吃的喝的都很普通很普通,服务好不错,就是那种住在附近就随便去吃点东西晒晒太阳,不住在附近也没必要专程前往的店。<br/>

This quaint little French inspired cafe/patisserie is a local favourite in the area. Not only do they boast a delicious breakfast and lunch menu, the coffee is done well and the pastries are second to none. A majority of the staff are French or French speaking and all pastries are made fresh daily in house. The aesthetic here is incredibly simple French and reminds me of my time in republíc in Paris. The service staff are friendly and attentive and know their menu well. I brought mum here for lunch and she was in love with the delicious cakes and pastries to compliment her coffee. This place is an absolute must if you are in the area. Highly recommend!

In response to previous reviewers, although it closes at 3:30, staff don't mind you staying til 4 so long as you're still finishing off your meal. Staff were friendly, conversed in French with each other. Chai was bland despite being prana Chai and milk slightly burnt. Limited amount of pastries on display looked good but didn't manage to try this time.
TheBearReview
I struggled with this little cafe. It is in an enviable position, chic distressed interior, inviting cakes and pastries on display, matcha and tumeric lattes as well as the standard coffees, clever innovative menu including soft shell crab squid ink burgers, even friendly waiters with cute French accents, it should be getting a solid 4.<br/>But the place is drafty, in fact down right cold. This was slightly uncomfortable but I just kept my coat on, no big deal.<br/>After spending a bit of time drooling at the cakes and pastries, I then saw the fly. It was snuggling into the creme patisserie perhaps to get warm? It really wasn't the fly's fault as these gorgeous looking cakes were completely left in the open! So I thought, oh well, I will get that soft shell crab. Oh, sorry, it is 2:30 and the kitchen is closed. Seriously?<br/>However the deal breaker was the service. Although friendly it was absolutely pathetic. It was either her first day or she just didn't have the English language skill required to be a waitress. She could not take my order for a latte. Imagine if I was trying to order the soft shell crab. At least I know her accent is real. <br/>Then at 3:29, we would told 'we are closing in 1 minute'. Wow. 1 minute. Never been told that before. And really? Who closes at 3:30? Doesn't everyone close at 4?<br/>So it was really quite disappointing all up. Such a shame.

Had lunch on a weekday. Ordered the Crab Benedict and Cappuccino.<br/><br/>I enjoyed the Benedict and the side which is Cauliflower salad. For me, the brioche was too thick. I would enjoyed more if it is sliced thinner and toasted until crisp. But other than that, the dish was good.<br/><br/>Cappuccino was perfect. It was strong and aromatic.<br/><br/>The service was very personal and friendly. Especially the Asian guy who served us was the best. I will definitely come back soon.

Millstone Patisserie is a consistently good spot. A bright and cosy cafe with nice coffee and delicious food. There is always a stunning array of sweet goodies at the counter but I usually go for breakfast which is always excellent. <br/><br/>The menu is interesting and varied and changes from time to time so there's new things to try. Set in a quiet street it's a very pleasant (and tasty) breaky or lunch spot.

New favorite brunch place! What I like most about this place is how genial and terribly efficient the staff are. They talk to you like an actual person. As in, you really get the impression they want to listen to what you have to say, and not just waiting for you to finish your question so they can answer and run off to their next task. It also helps that the food is very aesthetically pretty and yum. They have a wide selection of cakes with quality that rivals Laurent or Brunetti. Their restroom is also notably well presented (these things matter to me). Recommended items:<br/>Wild mushrooms with poached egg and sweet potato crisps<br/>Thyme infused cheesy toast

Millstone is a lovely place for coffee & brunch.<br/><br/>The eggs benedict is usually very good and their lunch salad and protein options are very versatile and generous<br/><br/>Service can sometimes jump from fantastic to horrible depending on who serves you but normally very inviting.<br/><br/>As an example the waitress responded with "and......?" When I showed that my poached eggs were over done

I have to say it was the dessert photos that attracted me to try out this place 😊 but the exceptional customer service had made my visit even better!!!<br/><br/>We had a pram and it was a busy Saturday afternoon, luckily we didn't have to wait long. The staff was very attentive and found us a corner to place the pram. One of the kitchen staffs even came to take our orders after finding the floor staffs totally flat out.<br/><br/>Finally, I highly recommend the black sesame latte 😉

Wow... what a great café.<br/>I went with my Mother for a special birthday and we will definitely be returning soon.<br/>I had the Chef’s recommendation of a Soft Shell Crab burger and boy was it full of flavour.  <br/>I loved every bite of it.  As did my Mother love her Macaroni and Cheese.<br/>There were so many yummy choices that I can’t wait to go back and try different dishes.<br/>The smells wafting through the café were simply amazing, as was the presentation of every dish coming out of the kitchen.<br/>The staff were all so helpful and friendly.<br/>Can’t wait to go back to Millstone.  Can’t recommend it highly enough.  A definite winner !

This was more than a pleasant surprise!  I'll usually order something akin to a Big Brekky, but when the Chef recommended the Smoked Mushrooms with some Ham Hock, I said why not give it a go.  Not only did I find it unique, but DELICIOUS as well.Great service and amazing meals.  I will be definitely returning.  Really cool find.

wow what a cafe! Best in Malvern for sure. Source: Legrand & Co. <br/>Let's have a quickie on the Millstone :D<br/>>> Ambience = tick<br/>>> Friendliness of staff = tick. This is despite the hordes of people visiting the place during the weekends. It was fully full last Saturday. The guys really must be stressed, but they are lovely, all of them, there is a general vibe of joy, they want to please you, they want to feed you, and they want you to know that they care about this place and this is one of  the  best "patis" in Melbourne, even though many of them are foreigners.  <br/>>>  Service = tick<br/>>> Time for the food to come out = tick<br/>>> Food menu = tick, both pre-prepared food (which looked fab and was constantly refreshed on the counter), interesting menu with a great flavoursome dishes, and even specials of the day.<br/>>> Food flavour = tick<br/>>> Food presentation = tick<br/>>> Cakes flavour = tick. The right amount of sugar always makes wonders for any sweet. <br/>>> Sweets presentation = tick<br/>>> Food freshness = tick. The sweets are baked in the premises every day and disappear in front of your eyes. <br/>>> Coffee preparation = tick.<br/>>> Coffee flavour = OK, a bit weak for my taste, still decent coffee. I had an espresso without sugar and it wasn't strong either. But I liked their espresso more, very silky and flavoursome, and perfect for those people who want to try an espresso and don't know if they like it. Start here.  <br/>>> Pricing = OK.<br/>>>>> Level of satisfaction tick tick tick! <br/><br/>Two downsides<br/>> The pastry base of some of their tartlets is great in flavour but way too hard and I had difficulties cutting mine with the fork.<br/>> Depending on the days, the place can be really noisy and crowded. <br/><br/>Great food, great attitude, great ambience, and tantalising cakes.
Lilush
Great food and service. I've ordered the mix salads, which were very generous and fresh and my friends had two pastries, that were very tasty.
Edibleflower1000
Well this place is a little gem! Our friends recommended it to us and we were pleasantly surprised with how high the quality of service, food and overall atmosphere was. It was that good we went there twice, now that says something! I personally recommend the cornbread smashed avo with poached egg, it was delicious and a combination that you don't usually see which was intriguing! Another visit I decided to mis it up and tried the savoury French toast! Now if you want to be spoilt with flavour this is a winner! <br/><br/>Friends had a mixture of menu items and loved all their dishes: smashed avo with goats fetta, baked beans and eggs, and the pork benedict! They all could not find a problem with anything. Service is fabulous and it is a very organised pleasant French cafe. Beautiful !

I really like everything about this cafe! The food is so consistent and delicious! I love the breakfast salad! The food is fresh and its so yum! My friends had 2 different egg style dishes which looked amazing and they both loved it! The cakes are to die for!
Luis Burgos-Jankovic
I went there for lunch and ordered a variety of salads, beef ribs and chips. The salads were disappointing in that the ingredients that were meant to be there were not there. I needed a detector to find the goats cheese in the goats cheese salad, The Waldorf salad was depressing, the wild rice salad was cooked to the consistency of bullets. The ribs were cooked for millennia and the sauce they were lathered in was a white persons interpretation on something that could be Asian. The Aoli with the chips was nice however.

This cafe had been around for sometime but visiting on a dreary Sunday it became a warm and delicious oasis. Busy and bustling but the kitchen turns out delicious and fresh dishes that were fantastic. Leave room for the very enticing pastries and cakes. Practise your French with the lovely staff! Magnifique!

Took me some time to get here, after reading some of the negative reviews. Gotta happily say that this is, truly, a lovely place; and my only regret is that I didn't visit sooner. Had a gorgeous banana bread with mocha mascarpone and a coffee delivered by a talented barista. I looked lovingly at the last couple of bites which I no longer has room for in my craving belly, and promised myself to be back soon.
Borderline Sunshine
I've eaten plenty of smashed avo and been to plenty of breakfast cafes in my small little life so i feel like now i can be quite critical.<br/><br/>The smashed avo was bland. All flare and fancy for show but it lacked something. Maybe some lemon juice could have made it better for me. <br/><br/>Staff looked so unhappy. I understand its Saturday and its winter and you'd rather be elsewhere but maybe try to look happy when i walk in the door? Also the 'uniforms' or lack thereof are really unprofessional. I didn't know who was a customer and who wasn't. <br/><br/>Fill up your pepper shakers. Good grief. It shouldn't be that difficult. <br/><br/>And take the radish off the smashed avo. <br/><br/>+1 tasty bread<br/>+1 fresh chai tea and not from a teabag<br/>+.5 free water. <br/><br/>Sorry but i won't be back.
Flaming Goose70
My husband works in the area so I meet him here often for lunch. Beautiful ambience and coffee and cakes to die for. We have come for a lazy Sunday breakfast and that too was terrific. Nestled away in a quiet street but always busy.. So that should speak volumes about this cafe.
MrNomNom
Charming service, great food, great coffee.  Beautiful pastry and cakes.  I was at Millstone for breakfast today and I saw Ashleigh Bareham, an ex Masterchef 2015 constestant.  No wonder the cakes are so beautiful.
Bon Bon
Been here twice for breakfast before work and had one amazing cake take away. The staffs here are friendly and helpful. They were able to accommodate my request ( quick serving as I was rushing ) and still put up the breakfast that I enjoyed. I must say the cake is certainly expensive. Ordered the Brioche bun served with egg and bacon. That Brioche bun was certainly one of best Brioche I ever had. Will recommend this if you are rushing but still hoping for a satisfying breakfast. Had the peas and smashed avo. Well,I m not a big fan of peas but this dish was yummy. Will definitely be back after I try out all the nice cafe in this area.
Steven Greenwood
Lovely cakes and coffee, but I couldn't believe it, I ordered the breakfast roll and it was absolutely horrible. The egg was hard like rubber (had to take it out), and the bacon was undercooked everything about it was dry. It turns out they are pre-made in the morning so by the early afternoon the brioche bun is going stale. Really pie form. The only compensation was they comped me my small coffee... This all on Mother's Day no less.

More style than substance. Millstone makes beautiful-looking pastries so friends splashed out and bought a selection as after dinner treats this week - by no means a cheap option, costing circa $50 for six.<br/><br/>Everyone was enchanted by how pretty everything appeared - a fig and honey cake, a lemon tart, a blueberry cheesecake, a mini pavlova, a salted caramel tart and a creme brulee cake. And how interesting they sounded - not your usual offerings. Appetites were whetted, and then swiftly disappointed.<br/><br/>Because everything looked so tempting, we had carved up the cakes to try more of these. The consensus was that the flavours of all of them were at best subtle, but mainly lacking. The texture of most was too uniform, missing the contrast that excites interest. I'm told by the hostess that the chocolate and raspberry brownie is much better, but not tasting it I'm hesitant to agree. <br/><br/>Based on this experience, I'd skip Millstone altogether in future, and go for the more traditional offerings of nearby Fleischer's in Glenferrie Rd.
Coffee Maverick
This place is good, mainly due to the French fellow who served us, he had good knowledge of the menu and provided good suggestions. But, this is where I question. Does it do enough, does it really stand out that much from seven eleven $1 coffee and a nice little bacon and egg mc muffin from maccas? Considering you could get 9 coffees and two bacon and egg mcmuffins for the same price, it's a tough choice. All in all it is good, servings a little too small, would revisit unless I was really hungry, if that was the case id be picking my 9 coffees and 2 egg mc muffins.
NoMeat
The BEST berry tart ever, very delicious and not too sweet. Pretty expensive for its size though as it is certainly not filling. <br/>Great french customer service <br/><br/>Chai latte was average, wouldn't order again but would definetly visit again for the pastry.
Isobellabites
One of my favourite brunch spots. Great ambiance with bright and happy vibes! I ordered the corn bread this time but am never disappointed in whatever I order from Millstone. Great, fast service. And how could you walk past that pastry cabinet and not try something, YOU MUST!!
Bianca Maciel Pizzorno
I have been to Millstone twice this year. Both for coffee and cake. Great service with friendly efficient staff. The first time I had a lovely tart that had a pannacotta top with figs and a beautiful buttery base. The second time a had this layered coconut sponge cake with strawberries and vanilla bean cream topped with roses. The strawberries were frozen which was a little upsetting. The coconut cake was a little hard around the edges but still delicious. My friends and family have had great experiences!
Catherine McIsaac
I so wanted to love this place. Unfortunately it just didnt work out that way. Coffee order came out wrong, extra cakes we hadnt ordered arrived. It was late in the day so the cabinet was pretty sparse and when I (cheekily) asked if there was anything else, they said no....Half way through eating our cakes a whole lot of new cakes got put in the cabinet. The creme patisserie in the strawberry tart showed the effects of freezing. We then got charged for the things we didnt order. Maybe I will try again one day.
Mr Bill
Great service, efficient & friendly. Lovely French baguettes and patisseries.<br/>Coffee was excellent. Top spot for lunch and will visit again.<br/>
Clarissa Nathania
I love this restaurant .. Me and my two friends went to this restaurant and everything we have ordered are superb and filling too.. Definetely will be back
EatMyShortbread
This place has seriously gone downhill. The absolute tiniest, and I'm talking a laughable portion of 4 chicken skewers for $15.50 with NOTHING added (who even does that these days?) Obviously I needed to order more food, so I got an even SMALLER plate with apparently two salads on it. I didn't realise two small pieces of pumpkin is considered a salad, especially seeing as this cost a ridiculous $16.00. Top this off with the new staff - over the top French guys who ignore you until you have to hail them down (and I've been twice this week now to give this place a second chance) when the cafe is half full. What an absolute shame. I loved coming here when it first opened. I'm not sure what has happened over the last few months but I won't be coming back. Au revoir, Millstone.
Michfish
Great cake selection and friendly staff! The lunch was great and definitely recommend pork belly! Also the hazelnut chocolate cake is such an indulgence so smooth and rich, great cold day treat with coffee
Cameron Neubacher
Absolutely loved it there, great food, nice beverages, good service, can't ask for much more. Will definitely be back as we live in the area
Robin Tunbridge
Cannot fault Millstone, every time I come here I have a fantastic experience!<br/>The cakes are yum but I also really love the brunch dishes, drinks, everything.<br/>Sometimes they run out of stuff on the weekends which is disappointing but understandable. I reccomend the fritters with poached eggs.
Choc Pudding
I had a pavlova tart, it was expensive and small, but tastes sooooo gooooood. I am not sure though whether I will come back again or not. All the tarts look amazing.
Sis Cowie
I ordered a birthday cake here. Was extremely disappointed. The service was appalling. I ordered with 60 hours notice online only to be called up a day and a half later being told that I couldn't not get the cake I ordered and PAID for. When I accepted the compromise and picked the cake up today it hardly passes for a cake. Whoever make it had frivolously, and rather disrespectfully stuck together five slices of the individual cake portions. Very disappointed and will definitely not be making a return. Nice work millstone you have lost a loyal customer.
Memory
The food is normal but the dessert is fantastic! If you want to try some popular dessert, you should be there before 12 o'clock. Otherwise nothing left. The salad with carrot is cute and delicious as well. The coffee is not bad but the environment is quite good.
Sandy Pok
The servings are small and it is a bit pricey. However, the cakes look gorgeous and they taste equally delicious. I would recommend coming here for their pastries (for special occasions) but nothing else.
B. Spencer
Good spot for breakfast near Malvern train station. Good coffee. Egg Benedict with ham hock is clever, love the ham hock. Ricotta pancake nice. Will come back to try their salads and cakes!
My French Rituals
Perfection? I think so! Finally made it to Millstone Patisserie in Malvern and took one of their beautiful passionfruit curd meringue tart home with me! Soft clouds of meringue, tangy passionfruit curd on a crumbly pastry base, such a beautiful dessert! I'm in heaven!
Melissa Yeap
Millstone had such amazing desserts! It had a chill cafe vibe to it as they had open windows that were also converted to a benchtop table with high bar stools. Would love to come back to try their breakfast menu as they had a large variety of food to choose from.
Julie Anne
Yum yum!! I had the baked eggs was amazing I'm very picky with eggs and not something I usually order but it sounded amazing and tasted even better, we took home some desserts and pastrys the cruffin was the best Iv ever had amazing
Salono
This cafe has been carefully designed to rip off the good people of malvern. Food servings are small and overpriced for what you get. The menu is very limited and the cakes are a rip off. There are many other cafes in malvern that are much nicer, quieter and better value than millstone.
Avolette
Wowee! This patisseries make beautiful cakes and slices. Packed with amazing sweet flavours. <br/>Coffee is good, and savory brunch options are decent. I tried the polenta squares which were yummy and a nice change from traditional toast or hash browns.
Vee
Lovely little pastry shop. The almond croissant ($5) was yum! The other dessert ($7) was creative but nothing too exciting. I had the Baked Eggs (around $17) and it was yum! There are seats outside as well which i enjoyed on a sunny day. It came to around $60 for 2 people. Would come back!
Keen For Cuisine
This cafe serves up some great cakes and lovely pastries that are so beautifully presented and taste amazing! The food menu has quite a selection but it's nothing outstanding. Definitely give this place a visit if you're up for some coffee and cake.
Lilian Baedeker
Lovely little place that has beautiful cakes and good cafe classics near malvern station. It will make you feel like you are going to a local boulangerie around the corner in a French town. <br/>On my regular visit, i have a takeaway box packed with their yummy cakes and pastries because I can't fit them all while I'm there. <br/>Once I left my fountain pen there and called to see if they had it, and the lady kept it aside for me to pick it up on my next visit.
The Gluttonous Bunny
Millstone is well known for their patisseries. Upon arriving, I noticed that the shop is rather spacious for a patisserie, however it turns out that they serve brunch and coffee here too. They offer outdoor seating too, just incase the place gets extremely busy on weekends. . We arrived just before 11am so glass display was still stocked with delicious cakes. I've heard that this little patisserie does tend to get quite busy during the afternoon and these cakes do run out quickly. So pop in early to avoid the disappointment.
Check Please
Great coffee and smiling staff then all downhill. Toast should not be an unbuttered 2cm sourdough slab with the dimensions of a door mat, pepper grinders should be full and bacon should not be burnt to black. And I so wanted to love this place.
Onara
Deliciously extravagant cakes, the likes of which I've only seen in Sydney at Adriano Zumbo. The savoury offerings are simple but tasty also with innovative salads and great coffee too
Gemma
Delicious cakes and yummy salads. Service can be slow when busy, but not too bad. Great place to order a birthday cake from too, they are beautiful and good value.
Matt Kerr
Visited Millstone this morning for breakfast and was very impressed. Whilst we watched the many different home made pastries - made on site by the very talented owner - be brought out from the kitchen, we shared a serve of baked eggs and a breakfast roll. The baked eggs were a good balance of spice, stew and egg, accompanied by a slice of buttery garlicy sourdough. The breakfast roll was also very tasty, and would be a great option for those limited on time. Will definitely visit again!!
V Gard
Breakfast sandwich was really good. Had bacon, brioche bun, eggs, veggies. I got a mocha but I thought it was too bitter and had too much coffee compared to the chocolate, and the sugar tasted bad.
Emmy Liggett
The corn and zucchini fritters are delicious! They're not too sweet and the beetroot relish and Meredith goats cheese on the side compliment the dish perfectly. I think my poached eggs were a tad overcooked, I prefer the yolk a little runnier, but overall I had a great time and meal here! Their display case at the counter with the cakes, baguette's and salad's is incredible, and the staff didn't mind when we took about 5 minutes trying to decide which cake(s) to get to take home with us.
Reneeee
They have some beautiful coffee and dessert but not food. I will not suggest their food. As it is just not worth trying.pork belly was as salty as if u were eating salt. I can make better cracking less salty pork belly myself.
Ai Thuy Tran
Having seen pictures of their pastries all over instagram, my friend and I knew we had to check millstone out for ourselves, and boy are we glad we did. We ordered two cakes to share and both were amazing. The hazelnut one was not too sweet and the mousse was very light. Highly recommended.
Shimona
I think the main selling point for this quaint little cafe is their pastries. Lots of items sell out by 1pm, so if you come for lunch, be prepared to be disappointed. Food wise, nothing to complain or to shout about. Cauliflower broccoli bake was delish, scrambled eggs good portion size, sweet potato zucchini balanced flavours but a little on the oily side. Overpriced in general. Coffee was pretty average.<br/>Oh, also, they seemed strangely happy to leave spilled food on the floor between our table and the next - was there were we got there, and still not cleaned up when we left. Seeing how they didn't seem particularly busy, I don't see why someone didn't just clean it quickly.<br/><br/>30/8: Went back with some girlfriends for some cakes. Cakes were amazing. Service sure wasn't. We had a small child with us, and even after walking right in and being unsure if we could get a seat, no one attended to us. We finally found a seat, and I found a baby chair hidden in the stairwell.<br/>These guys really need more staff.

Really unhappy with a recent experience at Millstone on the weekend. The coffee was appalling for a hotspot cafe of melbourne. So bad I wanted to send it back however it had taken 30 minutes to get it initially so I honestly couldn't be bothered waiting for a replacement. Our breaky was actually really yummy so it's disappointing the coffee was so bad. Unfortunately I don't believe it was because the barista was having a bad day as I've had a bad coffee on more than one occasion. Lastly the straw that broke the camels back was the bill slapped on the table as I was chewing my last mouthful of my breakfast and an exclaim from one of the waitresses that they had a big line of people waiting. I understand cafes have to seat as many people as they can but not only had I had a second to finish my meal, I hadn't been offered another drink and as far as I'm concerned I was still a paying customer!
Sair29
Excellent food - the zucchini fritters were fresh, vibrant and flavourful with a delicious beetroot relish. The porridge was creamy and smooth and the crumble on top was a delightful addition. Great chai and not to mention the cakes are a work of art - beautiful presentation, great combination of flavours and fresh. Looking forward to returning, and the staff were fantastic too.

This little gem is tucked away in the side streets of Malvern and it is well worth hunting it out. The decor is cute, bright and cosy. The breakfast menu has delicious options but my favourite is the fritters 👌🏼 I've had their burger which was also delicious. Their array of fresh cakes and pastries is to die for, I would say better than zumbo any day. So do yourself a favour and try this place! But not too often because it's small and I want a table 😀
Evoo
Nice place, food was a little over priced for quite a small meal that wasn't that great, coffee was average, didn't try their cakes or pastries which are suppose to be good. Great customer service though!

Just a throw stone’s away from the train station, this cafe is a hidden secret among the locals around Claremont Avenue. After a good half day of work on a Sunday morning, my colleague and I wanted to explore some of the cafes along the backstreets of Malvern. We decided to walk down the little avenue strip near the train station where there appeared to be a number of little shops lined on both sides until end of the block. And this my friends, is where we discovered Millstone Malvern.
Gregngibson1
Fantastic coffee, superb food & great informative service. First visit, will certainly go back
Dave
Visited Millstone for lunch today. Our party of 4 had baked eggs, French toast, crumpets and eggs on toast, along with coffees and teas. We were all really impressed with our meals, they looked terrific and tasted great. Service is attentive and the venue itself is nicely laid out with good footpath seating that faces the sun. We'll be back again.
Tom
Benedict w Ham Hock BEST EVER. Gotta say after two visits about a month apart, the Slow Cooked Ham Hock Jerked with Eggs Benedict and Harissa spiced Hollandaise is the best breakfast/brunch dish I've ever had.<br/><br/>Five stars!<br/><br/>Good coffee and great pastries too!
MiseEnPlace
Emerging boutique institution. Strong contender for one of the best breakfast cafes in Melbourne. excellent food, ridiculous patisserie, nice fit out and friendly staff. the baked eggs are a winner and there is respect for good, local produce (e.g. woodfrog bread, drurie lane muffins and dr marty's crumpets). the smashed avo is a generous crowd-pleaser as well. the cafe is extremely popular and seems to be fast becoming a little institution in the south for the real stars of this place - the patisserie (absurdly good). a unique and inspiring cafe and a lovely place to start the day.
Irving79
Great staff, incredible food. Went today after reading much about millstone - was blown away by the quality of the cakes, the breakfast and the staff. While they were flat chat, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Will be back.
Angel343
Poor service and basic quality.. We visited Millstone for brunch and found the menu very "minimalistic". The glasses of water and the bottle had grime on them. The coffee glasses had old food embedded as if the dishwasher was never cleaned. The food finally showed up, and showing up is all it did. Nothing special at all. All I got out of it was a stomachache.
Bea
Lovely looking cafe that serves average food and comes with 0/10 customer service. Agree with JH's review below... came here on a sat, there were no more seats outside as it was a sunny day so we went inside. we sat down, no staff seem to notice we walked in (it wasn't that busy, it was only half full inside). waited... waited and waited... a kitchen staff walked pass & we asked for the menu, she informed one of the service staff to give us menu. the other staff replied "yea yea yea" in a very dismissive tone. should have just walked out but my partner & I were too hungry. after a few minutes we finally got the menu and water, she doesn't seem to be happy serving us at all. food was good but not great for the price. i love the deco though, lovely looking place. verdict: not coming back as there are better cafes out there.
KAMNCR
Quite place, friendly staff. I went there with my little boy, we sat outside and would like to order the pumpkins salad, but it's sold out, so I had another pasta salad thats not my favour but it was good! I also ordered fries for my little boy, big portion and delicous!
Sam Difference
The cakes are the attraction for me with this place, but at $9 a pop you expect something pretty special. They were okay, but not out of this world with the taste or value for money. Maybe I just chose the wrong cakes?
JH
Good food, small portions, expensive price, terrible service.. I've been here a few times and each time I try to reserve judgement as I want to like it, but it's the same story every time.<br/><br/>The food itself is good. Not amazing, on the smaller side for the price, but it's fine. The thing that bugs me every time is how terrible the service is. You enter the cafe and nobody notices you until you go and inform them of your presence. They sit you in awkward seating arrangements if they are short on space and once again, service seems to be an afterthought once you are seated. Twice I've been almost overcharged until I asked how it could have possibly cost that much (they charged me for a different table on both accounts). All in all, service is what lets this place down.<br/><br/>If you absolutely must try Millstone, my suggestion is to have a main at one of the other great options in the area and just go for the desserts... as a take away.
Chefosaurus
Such a beautiful location. So quaint and reminiscent of a beautiful French village. Millstone is not out of place here at all. My issue is the prices... A cappuccino that is really the size of a thimble. A croissant for $5. I love pastries like the next person but are we really in an environment that we are ok with paying this amount for s croissant. Yes it was tasty, but not worth the money. Having said that the atmosphere, location and staff were all amazing!
Michelle Li
Beautiful pastries and friendly staff. Stopped by this morning for a takeaway coffee and almond croissant. The assortment of pastries on display is incredible and the quality is top-notch. Smiles all round from the staff. They ran out of almond milk but the barista was lovely and asked about soy instead – like it was no hindrance at all during the 10am rush. Would recommend to anyone in the area!

What great place

How about a glimpse of sweetness for today's blog post? As some of you may have noted, I am a sugarholic and I seek all things sweet be it in patisseries or viennoiseries. To me, there are certainly endless of options in Melbourne, almost as though the list goes on an infinite loop. Not that I am whinging of course (well, maybe health conscious me might). But anyhooo, I have been wanting to tick Millstone patisserie off my list for the longest time and was finally able to last weekend. Yay for sweet treats!:) This was a takeaway run so in no method possible would it sum the entire patisserie well. I will only be sampling the baked good in this blogpost;) Custard tart ~ I have a weakness for pretty looking desserts and this was one of them. The raspberry added hints of acidity and freshness to the tart whilst the crumbly tart shell was a lovely contrast to the silky smooth custard layer. And now, we move on to the yeast infused dough pieces aka the croissant and cruffin. Unfortunately, I only had this at 1.30pm on the same day which would mean that these pastries may have already lost a bit of their aroma. Both of them were still flaky and buttery to my liking. Thumbs up for the chocolate cream in the cruffin; not overly sweet nor bitter! Pavlova and chocolate tart ~ First of all, the pavlova is a must have. I am not a big fan of pavlovas but I found this one incredibly well balanced in terms of sweetness and sourness. The pavlova was not overly sweet and what a lovely surprise it was to find a tart tart (haha geddit?) underneath it. Not entirely sure if it's creme patisserie or not but doesn't matter..twas delicious. If you are a dark chocoholic, the chocolate tart is a must try. It tasted like it was made with 85% dark chocolate. Very moreish it was for such a tiny piece.

Good stuff. This place is value

Beautiful Brekky... Fritters & Brekky Roll spot on... Milkshake a little small & no smoothies...

Mixed Berry Patisserie. We tried for the first time Millstone today. The patisserie's are 11/10, just out of this world. Clearly the chef has been well trained, extraordinary attention to detail in her beautiful food presentation. The varieties of patisseries are plentiful, I only suggest to get there early because I have also learnt they do sell out, and has apparently establish a cult following. <br/><br/>Well done to all at Millstone - you have my vote!
Viv DLR
Mister T and I had Saturday brunch here. Very busy so may be difficult to score a spot. Staff was friendly but food took awhile to arrive. I had the Welch Rarebit which was yummy but a little too cheesy for me (I like cheese but cheese plus creme fraiche was a bit too much). Mister T had the beetroot and potato rosti which was superb and I would highly recommend. Chai latte was decent. Loves the buzz and decor of the place. Overall pleasant experience.
Lovealatte
We came in for coffee & cake and the cakes were amazing!! Especially the pavlova - I even got one take away. Will return. My only disappointment was the cakes they have on their Instagram they didn't have when I was there. I really wanted the caramel dome and banana cheesecake
Mark
Love it!. Great coffee, great brekky roll, great cakes!
Sally.norton
Terrible service - order taken, then barista's friends rock up and are allowed to push in the queue. This place has crap service. I ordered a coffee and paid and waited. The barista sees her friends (who arrived after I had ordered) and engages in a conversation with them for ages, ignoring myself and another customer left waiting, whilst she paid more attention to her conversation than the boiling milk. Barista then proceeded to serve her friends coffee and turned around to look at the both of us left waiting as if this was the first time she had seen us. When I asked for my coffee, she didn't even realise that she had made mine and left it standing on the counter whilst she attended to her conversation and her friends. POOR EFFORT!! Don't go there unless you are friends with the staff - plus coffee is awful and way overpriced!!
Chiara Veritas
Lovely and very reactive staff.. I love the atmosphere and the buzz of this cafe. The staff are friendly and whilst packed to the rafters, everyone is calm and content.<br/>Food is lovely and the coffee is perfect for me, (everyone has different tastes).<br/>Unfortunately on this very busy morning my fruit toast was slightly burnt...A minor matter as I don't mind slightly burnt toast, but toast can be difficult, and on this occasion the toast actually cut my mouth and tongue...blood everywhere.<br/>The crust was so sharp that without realizing, my mouth was torn apart.<br/>I mention this because it was such a shock. When I mentioned the incident to the staff member, after I paid, the girl was lovely and immediately reactive taking the matter direct to the manager. Both were genuinely concerned. It's rare to find this level of care and I thank the young girl at the counter for her attention despite the manic morning before her. I feel confident that no further instances of this kind will happen again. Thank you.

Poached eggs were a bit watery but otherwise a great meal.

Very exciting to see the craft of patisserie baking here at millstone with this young lady that owns the shop. Fussy with my coffee but millstones beans hit the spot<br/>The croissant s are just heavenly they melt in your mouth<br/>And I just loved looking at the cakes that this young lady had made and decorated<br/>My half hr at millstone was a joy to be had ......

Not all it's cracked up to be. Very ordinary coffee too. Disappointing.

Good but not Great. Also Soy Drinkers Beware!. Friendly service. Simple small menu but the food was still delicious. Cakes were absolutely exceptional. First coffee was good, not great but good. Second coffee...well... after drinking 1/5 I thought it tasted like milk not soy (But what kind of barista would be so careless, surely I was losing my mind) turns out the barista "accidentally" gave me cows milk not soy. As I am extremely intolerant to lactose I was ill for the entire day and had to call in sick to work. I understand mistakes can be made in cafes and restaurants all the time, but "accidentally" making a coffee with cows milk not soy is a mistake that could and should be 100% avoided! I may come back for takeaway cakes but could never trust your barista again. Really upset, because until that second coffee (also lack of care from staff, not even seeing if I was going to be ok) I was loving this little cafe.
Spoilt For Choice
Expensive and menu has gone downhill.... Have visited this place a few times now and unfortunately it just keeps getting worse with every visit...service has been slow every time, it is expensive and serving sizes are very small and not much to choose from...ordered the blueberry pancakes got two small crappy pancakes and no blueberries to be seen!! Coffee is nothing to brag about either so can't see myself coming back...

Bright. Warm and homely. Friendly staff. Fantastic food. Well done.

Nothing special. Went to Millstone last week for breakfast. I must admit I was a little disappointed. I found the serves quite small, yet expensive for what they were, and the coffee milky and tasteless. Nice ambiance though and tastefully decorated.

Magnificent Meal. Heard a lot of chatter from my foodie obsessed friends about this little place in a quiet suburban Malvern street. I made the pilgrimage and arrived around 1pm and the place was packed with a small queue waiting outside. After around a 10 minute wait the friendly staff sat us grabbed our drink orders on the spot and then produced menus. Coffee was served promptly and our orders dispatched to the kitchen, I must add the coffee was of very good quality. Given the place was full and obviously busy the food was delivered within 12 minutes of ordering. I went for the soft shell crab on brioche and my partner tucked into the avocado smash, my crab was superb nicely spiced with fresh crunchy coleslaw a chill mayo and a buttery soft seeded brioche roll. This was a wonderful interplay between the pastry and savoury kitchen and what I expect from a patisserie cafe. I got a quick taste of the avocado and fetta smash that my partner ordered and the quality of the soft creamy marinated fetta was as good as I have tasted. Another round of coffee and time to contemplate pudding! For me the apple tart "tart tartin" and a wonderful snickers inspired chocolate and nougat dome for her majesty both desserts where well executed and displayed an accomplished deft hand, theses artisan delights were especially pleasing on the pallete as they obviously used the highest quality ingredients but the real skill was the creators subtle touch on the sugar both desserts did not suffer with the sugar overload demonstrated at similar venues.<br/>If I had to score Millstone I would award 8.5/10. Great little place I look forward to returning soon.

Sensational!! Been to Mills.... Sensational!!<br/>Been to Millstone twice - love it!<br/>As others have said, the tarts/pastries/cakes are to die for. The coffee is good and both times the service has been excellent. <br/>Yesterday I had the eggs on corn fritters (sorry - can't remember the proper name) and the balance of flavours was sublime. My wife had the salad of the day and was really impressed with that. <br/>On both visits we have seen Alice, the owner, go around the tables checking how things are with the customers. Amazing!<br/>I have seldom seen such complex pastries produced so regularly and consistently. The 2 we had were multi layered works of art! Yum.....<br/>Highly recommended!!

Good and Bad A couple of we.... Good and Bad<br/>A couple of weeks ago I had a fantastic and delicious chicken, noodle and macadamia dressed salad. I really enjoyed it. <br/>I had been a few times prior and each time had great coffee. <br/>I went back and had breakfast. It was nice, but, not better than I would make at home. I was disappointed with the coffee.

Love Millstone. I live locally and have visited Millstone on a number of occasions.<br/>I have been impressed each time with the food, service and young staff.<br/>The owner, I believe has completed a course in Paris and as such produces the most sublime pastries you will ever taste! Give up your diets!!<br/>She must be working long hours to produce such amazing treats! She greets return customers like old friends and I thoroughly enjoy each visit!<br/>I cannot recommend it more highly.<br/>HY from Glen Iris

Great!. Great place - will be coming back!!!

Disappointing experience. I live locally and have been to millstone a number of times. Everytime I have loved the pastries, desserts and amazing pork belly! <br/>But on my last visit I was less than impressed. I ordered a selection of takeaway salads and cakes. Unfortunately, the savoury food was really, really mediocre. The chicken noodle salad was very dry and tasteless and I had to add a ton of sesame oil/lime/soy sauce when I got home. My boyfriend threw most of his out. The worst part was the sweet potato salad... The serving was laughable. Literally, I laughed when I opened the takeaway box. It consisted of 4 or so finger size pieces of sweet potato. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but the place is not cheap. I don't think it was done this way on purpose, but I was appalled at the laziness of the staff in giving me this rediculous portion. They just seemed like they couldn't be bothered and didn't want to be there.<br/>That said, the cakes were lovely and generous.<br/>Overall, I had high hopes for millstone but will probably give it a miss in future and head to other places in the area, like Cooper and Millas, which has a wider range of salads/sandwiches and although priced high, has much more generous portion sizes.

We didn't have a great experience. We arrived Sunday around 2pm. Unfortunately they were already out of two items of their menu but we managed to find some yum stuff off the specials. Unfortunately the ingredients didn't match up and the salad had no Gorgonzola. Additionally, they were out of bottled organge juice - they were really nice and gave us what they had left free of charge. However, upon paying they double charged for the salad and then the OJ. So overall it wasn't a great experience. Really lovely interior. Will probably try again but perhaps in the morning when the items as ingredients are still available.

A-friggin-Mazing!!. Living in Fitzroy, it's an almost unheard of occasion that I find myself coming back to the East of the river for anything, let alone to dine. But, I have taken a great liking to this one rare beauty, and will travel far and wide every day or the week (if I could) to get my hands on a Millstone coffee and cake. Eating there is absolute bliss and I've nearly been through everything on the menu!<br/><br/>Best of all are the fabulous staff who are genuinely warm, welcoming and just so god damn efficient. I have met the owner and chef-extraordinaire, Alice, a couple of times and she will go totally out of her way to accommodate you, even at the busiest of times.<br/><br/>Beats any cafe I've ever been to before, hands down. I'm moving back to the east-side!

First time for something special!. I've never left a review before, but thought as the service and food was so good at Millstone - it was worth it for this Malvern gem!<br/><br/>I cannot recommend this place highly enough... <br/><br/>I started with a piccolo - was beautiful! A perfect blend of beautiful beans and really nice milk...<br/>I then moved onto breakfast - had the baked eggs - and they were great! <br/>It was hard to restrain myself so I finished it all off with a chocolate croissant and it was one of the best i've ever had! <br/><br/>To top things off - the owner and pastry chef - Alice - came over to our table and talked us through the desert / cakes that were on offer... I didn't indulge in any cakes this time, but would make great gifts for dinner parties or even a girlfriends birthday cake.<br/><br/>I'll be back for sure :)

SUCH A SHAME. I had previously been to Millstone 3 times and really enjoyed & was excited to have a great local place to come to.<br/>Today, however, was the complete opposite and I won't be returning. <br/>My first coffee was great. I ordered a second, it was milky and tasted burnt. <br/>I sent it back explaining what was wrong and mentioned how good the first was. <br/>They did not take this well at all and they were quite rude to me. I was stunned by the reaction.
Mandy
Disappointing after all the hype of this new place. Coffee terrible. Tried twice on the coffees but both equally bad. Food ok but nothing special. Didn't have any of the cakes/ pastries but they look good. Not a place where customer service is a priority. Won't be going back.
I Eat Adelaide
Wow. My inaugural visit to newly opened Millstone and it was fantastic. My only disappointment is I do not live in Melbourne! We went on a Thursday late morning and the place was almost full. Coffee was great, the breakfast brioche was superb and the pastries to die for. My friend had the zucchini and sweet potato fritters with beetroot relish and poached egg - he gave it a massive thumbs up. The staff are super friendly and make you feel at home. I will have to make the trip from Adelaide again soon just to come here to sample the delights of this young talented chef. Be prepared to wait for a table as it has fast become a real Malvern hotspot.

Delicious croissants. Bought 2 chocolate croissants, 2 plain, and 2 swirly cinammon croissants and they were devoured by my kids and I in a flash! My favourite? The cinammon....going back for more...

Amazing coffee. The ricotta & honeycomb hot cakes are amaze balls. Highly recommended.

Went here this morning. Sat at the bench on the right hand side of the resteraunt - really enjoyed the Morning sun that came through. Had a beautiful breakfast and really enjoyed the coffee. The staff were great - really helpful, it was a pleasure to sit here and I highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

Good pastries, but give brekky a miss. I have been here twice for breakfast, both times coffee was very weak and milky. First time had ricotta pancakes which tasted like garlic. Second time I had avo smash, and my partner had scrambled eggs with 'roasted mushrooms', which were actually just sliced up and grilled button mushrooms, and 'roasted tomatoes', which was a floury supermarket tomato, grilled with some thyme on it - very disappointing. Both dishes needed seasoning. Service is friendly but inattentive - we were told to seat ourselves when we arrived, which was fine, but were then ignored for 10 minutes and had to ask for a menu and to order coffee. The place wasn't full and there were four waitstaff/counterstaff, so there's really no excuse for not providing better service. Overheard another customer asking for a knife. A used napkin sat on the benchseat at the table next to us for the entire time we were there, without being noticed or removed by the staff. This place has potential, and the pastries are delicious, but they need to use better produce, deliver what the menu promises (I can get my own button mushrooms and floury tomato and grill them up at home for $2 and little effort, rather than paying $7 for them in a cafe), and train their staff to actually serve rather than hover uncertainly around the counter.

Don't bother trying to 'phone for a reservation!!!!. Tried calling 4 times to make a reservation and left messages as there was a recorded message only - what sort of business is this???? To date I haven't received a return call, tried ringing at different times of the day presuming they were unable to take my call during busy periods. Not impressed!!!

Nice place. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff, we liked the open feel. Coffee was well made, Long Black was rich but not burnt like so many places do.<br/>The zucchini fritters were delicious, really liked the crunchy bits and overall a delicious meal, but there was only 2 small fritters, a little beetroot relish, and 2 poached eggs... for $16.50 I would expect a larger serving.<br/>The build-your-own breakfast of poached eggs, mushroom and avocado was the same. Everything was delicious but the portions were very small for the price.
Amanda
Not too bad, really nice intimate space and good service, pastries look fantastic. But the zucchini and sweet potato fritters for breakfast were dry and over cooked. Will try again.

Millstone is a must. Great coffee & chai latte, lovely food & inviting interior. Terrific service. I'II be back.

Blown away. Came here today after reading about this place on broadsheet. Millstone is stunning. I had the baked eggs which were probably the best I've ever had. The coffee was beautiful - my long macchiato (Proud Mary single origin) was rich and delicate, perfectly made. The pastries, though, are the big draw card of this place. The croissants were nearly gone by the time we arrived (I've heard you need to go early to snap them up), but I managed to try a chocolate croissant which was as good if not better than any I have had in Paris. The various cakes in the beautiful display case looked unbelievable (no idea what my fellow reviewer below is talking about). My girlfriend tried one of the house made donuts (which she refused to share...), which she said was incredible. My only regret was being too full to try a cake of my own. I will be coming back to try everything else (including what looks like an amazing pick and mix lunch menu). Have to say the staff were great too, very friendly and accommodating (including the lovely young owner who makes all of the pastries herself). Best cafe in the area by a long, long way.

Have to be the worst coffee I have ever had. The cakes on display looked like they where dropped and are extremely over priced. <br/>Service WHAT service. ???

I am so excited to have a friendly, vibrant new cafe close to home! I highly recommend this cafe, the staff are fabulous, the coffee is delicious but most of all the food is mouth watering! So what are you waiting for?? Get down and try it out now!!! Look forward to seeing you all again soon :)

Love Millstone!!!. Went to Millstone this morning for what was supposed to be a coffee with girlfriends. However when we walked in and saw all the AMAZING and beautifully presented food we couldn't just have a coffee. The staff at Millstone were very warm and friendly. Nothing was too much of a hassle and our food and coffees came in no time. My friends ordered the egg & bacon rolls and raved about them. I had the fruit toast and it was so yummy. I like my coffee nice and hot and Millstone certainly nailed it. It's great to see so many people supporting what will defiantly be the place to go for beautiful food, great coffee and friendly and accommodating staff. We'll done Millstone, can't wait to come and have one of your amazing sweets.
Sarah
Finally a cafe that ticks all the boxes! The hardest part of my visit was trying to decide what to eat off the menu. Beautiful lunch meats and salads, great coffee and funky vibe. I'll be back to try the breakfast menu!
Sarah
I don't like to give bad reviews but unfortunately was pretty dissapointed with Millstone. I'm guessing it's because they've just opened but we were forgotten about for approx 20 minutes and weren't offered a menu or coffees. We ended up asking for both things at the counter and then were checked on constantly which was nice. I ordered the zucchini and sweet potato fritter.. I was very hungry after this as it was just 1 fritter and some beetroot relish. I must say that the coffee was excellent, I will come back in a few months and I'm sure it will be much better.

I'll be able to give a better review if I get to eat here as this mornings visit meant I had to leave without being served<br/>I recommend only going during quiet periods or when they get more staff or get their stuff together<br/>Had 2 waiters come up to me with food I hadn't ordered as nobody had approached me,I told them I hadn't even seen a menu yet they either didn't hear me or didn't care as I didn't see them return so I could actually order<br/>Oh well for the time I was there,I at least got to read some of the Good Weekend magazine do something came out of my visit

A MUST GO. After hearing about Millstone all week I decided to go along for my first visit today, and WOOOW was I blown away. Initially just went in for a coffee but I couldn't resist and found myself ordering Pork Belly followed by the most amazing Chocolate Tart I have ever eaten. <br/><br/>Alice Wright should be commended on her impeccable pastry skills. These pastries must be seen (and eaten) to be believed, by far the best in Melbourne.<br/><br/>Millstone is a MUST whether you are looking for a delicious piece of Pork Belly, an outstanding chocolate tart or simply a delicious coffee, This is the place to go.

What a gem!. Found next to Malvern train station, Millstone is an easy step 1. <br/><br/>Step 2 ... Order their pea and ham soup. Its incredible. Delicious, mouth watering ham hock that's been shredded to perfection. <br/><br/>Step 3 .. You really, really want to try the pork belly. Its super crispy, but also melt in your mouth. All at the same time!<br/><br/>Step 4 ... Finish off with the cheese cake. Its to die for. Roasted peanut, fragrant florals and a cheese that makes all the people next to you dribble. <br/><br/>The drinks menu is equally as impressive, with a great selection of everything, including cold pressed juices and world class coffee. <br/><br/>Do yourself a favour, visit this wonderful eatery. You wont regret it!

Absolutely delightful. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly and the staff were friendly and helpful. I took one of the passionfruit butter cakes home for later and it certainly didn't disappoint! Will probably need to do an extra gym session this week as a result but I'll definitley be returning to Millstone. Highly recommended!
Run Mum Run
Being a long time local in Claremont Ave I was very excited to see Millstone opening in the street. Who can resist a good Patisserie? Millstone has exceeded my expectations. Whilst still undergoing some initial teething problems whilst everyone finds their feet they are Minor and the quality of the food and delicious sweets more than makes up for this. Such an asset to the area. I wish them all the best.

We were very unimpressed with both the food and service. Will not be returning. What a disappointment.
Edge Of My Plate
I recently heard about the opening of a new cafe in Malvern, it sounded like it would be exactly my kind of place. Settled a bit off the main roads, a place that serves breakfast but also delicious cakes as the owners, Alice Wright, is a trained pâtissière.
DaisyNevertoosweet
Millstone Patisserie is a cafe/bakery, in the more residential area of Malvern on Claremont Avenue. Here they are serving breakfast and lunch dishes but most important Alice’s creations from croissants to amazing 5 layered cakes. Mr Bao and I got to the new cafe at around 11am on a Sunday morning and it was already packed with locals and people coming to buy takeaway coffee and cakes. We had our boss hahaha I meant our puppy Cupcake with us. So we were lucky to get the last table outside. Mr Bao wanted something different today and ordered a Cappuccino. They use Proud Mary coffee here and the house blend never disappoints.
Kedama
....cute cafe with yummy food.

The brioche bun was soft, pillowy and sweet and the chipotle mayo added the needed flavouring to pair of an otherwise ‘boring’-esque breakfast roll.
